  4. I am very much of the opinion that as well the Cosmere advances into the space age, investiture banks and changers will very quickly emerge in the CS. We know the spren cities of Roshar have already started this process with transfers into perfect gemstones. It is natural that as as Cosmere technology and ability to manipulate investiture grows, investiture will become a sort of commodity. This is why I believe that people who are technically knowledgeable enough, likely in Silverlight, will begin making business of changing types of investiture around. Especially with Scadrian advances in Feruchemical technology. This makes me believe it is theoretically possible to do things like switching around attributes, or even using unkeyed investitures to make custom metal minds. This will make a demand for the ability to easily transfer between investiture types, which at this point can probably be rented to regular people. Naturally, very smart people who want to be rich will step in to fill this demand. TSM spoilers In summary, I thought this was an interesting little theory and I am interested to hear thoughts. P.S. Alder, please don't slam me with 20 WoB's

  5. A little over 2 years ago I posted a "Roshar Reimagined" HD map that I created in Photoshop and it was really well received. The 17th Shard even went on to use it in their Interactive Map of Roshar project, which was really cool to be a part of even in a small way. I got to looking at the old map a month ago though and I felt like perhaps I could do a bit better... so I gave it a fresh coat of paint using some new graphic design tricks I'd picked up in the past 2 years, and I was really happy with the newest version! So I wanted to share it with the rest of the fanbase, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do. I love to hear feedback as well, so lay it on me

  6. One thought that I'm most likely wrong about but I can't get out of my head and I won't give up until it's confirmed that I'm 100% wrong is that Star is related to Hoid, as soon as it was mentioned that she has white hair and I remembered that Brandon said that hoid has dated a dragon was the first thing that came to my mind

  7. I love the Firefly vibes the last chapter was giving off. I'm a big fan of a misfit crew, especially when they all have different powers/abilities and are different species to boot. Each member of the crew becomes so unique, with rich, lore-filled backgrounds. Starling: A young dragon, niece of Frost, apprentice to Hoid, locked in her human form until she learns...something. Who put the bracers on her? Nazh: RIP Nazrilof. Or not? He's a Shade...but a smart Shade...not a blood-thirsty murder Shade...but maybe he could be if he wanted to? I'm interested to learn the hows and whys surrounding his death and afterlife. Aditil: An Aetherbound (yessss) with a dead aether and a broken bud. Character flaws mean room for sweet character development! Looking forward to learning more about Dhatri, her homeworld...maybe the Aether homeworld? ZeetZi: Something NEW. A Lawnark! Feathered humans...fascinating. I instantly envisioned him as Abed from Community. Chrysalis: Ship's doctor and resident Sleepless horde. Possible war criminal. Part of me is hoping she turns out to be our precious kawaii swarm from Komashi. Captain: Crow? Please? It's Xisis' ship so this is entirely probable. Her disembodied voice seemed kind of intimidating like Crow. The Dynamic: Mustn't forget the last member of the crew...the ship herself! Following in the thruster wakes of bucket-of-bolts before her, such as the Millenium Falcon and Serenity, Dynamic is a hodgepodge of Rosharan, Scadrian, and Dhatrian tech. No Awakened metalminds though...too expensive. I do love a ship with character.

  8. When you very nearly start crying because the video for the new secret project won’t load at school …when you have a teacher who loves Brandon and he sees you almost crying in class and asks what’s up and you wordlessly turn around your phone to show the video that won’t load and he says “go to the doors at the end of this hall, that’s where you get the best service” and he suddenly becomes your favorite teacher.

  9. I was casually reading The Lost Metal when I came across an interesting description of everyone's favorite character: Allomancer Jak. In the above excerpt (emphasis mine) we see a couple of faulty descriptions of Allomancy. Flight obviously refers to Coinshots or Lurchers. Eating rocks is, technically, a very good description of what Allomancers do to fuel their abilities. The talking to birds, though...that's a new one. As best we know, no Allomantic ability is capable of this. Obviously, the story is conflating a few different aspects of Scadrial's magic systems under the broad term "Allomancy" and we can't expect a miner in (what was very likely) the Roughs to get all the details right. So, where did Wayne's mother get the idea of talking to birds? Well, the obvious answer is a kandra. Obvious, so long as you have a modicum of sanity left to you. But I, free from the mortal constraints of such petty things as rationality, had a thought. What if Wayne's mother wasn't conflating Hemalurgy with Allomancy, but Feruchemy? We're all familiar with how F-Duralumin works to a certain extent by now. Tap blank Connection in a foreign land, and you are instantly able to speak and comprehend the local language, albeit with an accent. The implication is that this is among the simplest application of Feruchemical Connection, and that more sophisticated uses likely exist. So, I propose a fairly intuitive extrapolation. What if you somehow manipulated Connection to facilitate communication between animals? Inherently, a Feruchemist tapping Connection could make animals more trusting. So, this isn't a huge step forwards. But, yeah. This was just fun to type out. Thoughts? Longshot97

  12. Just saw that they add this in the project update: All his life, Sixth of the Dusk has been a traditional trapper of Aviar—the supernatural birds his people bond with—on the deadly island of Patji. Then one fateful night he propels his people into a race to modernize before they can be conquered by the Ones Above, invaders from the stars who want to exploit the Aviar. But it’s a race they’re losing, and Dusk fears his people will lose themselves in the effort. When a chance comes to sail into the expanse of the emberdark beyond a mystical portal, Dusk sets off to find his people’s salvation with only a canoe, his birds, and all the grit and canniness of a Patji trapper. Elsewhere in the emberdark is a young dragon chained in human form: Starling of the starship Dynamic. She and her ragtag crew of exiles are deep in debt and on the brink of losing their freedom. So when she finds an ancient map to a hidden portal between the emberdark and the physical realm, she seizes the chance at a lucrative discovery. These unlikely allies might just be the solution to each other’s crisis. In their search for independence, Dusk and Starling face perilous bargains, poisonous politics, and the destructive echo of a dead god. I guess this would explain why Xisis is in such a bad situation.

  14. I agree with @Returned, I'm not sure if it even needs nerfing. The Bands of Mourning exist at all, we saw a hacked Elantrian in TLM, a nuke big enough to wipe out at least a 100 mile radius was deployed against Elendel, and Duralumin allowed Wayne to outrun electrons. Insanely powerful stuff is going on, not just F-Steel. They have specific applications that can make them incredibly useful but a Steelrunner needs to be at the right time, in the right place, with the right information, with the right storages to make a difference. Not only are we assuming sufficient storage for our stunts, but we're assuming a sufficiently disciplined Ferring. Wax and Wayne are in the habit of storing whenever possible because doing so saved their lives, but even Sazed was running into situations when he just hadn't bothered to store enough attribute (I think weight was one he only stored incidentally) and he was really wishing he had been better prepared. Emphasize the hassle and opportunity cost of storing Speed and explore the scenarios where huge bursts of speed aren't the optimal solution and we can go from there. If being able to run at Mach 1 for 5 seconds meant that you could never go out for sports for months, rarely hang out normally with friends and have regular normal conversations, or spending hour after hour moving through life as if a bug through amber? For many, that cost would be too high. Sure, speedsters can be busted, but they aren't the end all solution to everything, otherwise the Justice League wouldn't need anyone other than the Flash. Steelrunners are a severely nerfed version of the Flash anyway, since as Brandon puts it, limitations are more interesting than powers. Steelrunners have plenty of drawbacks, notably access to F-Steel did not save Tyndwyl or Idashwy. That said... we might get more viewpoints like Wax where trying to take down a speedster might be a more interesting challenge than the protagonist being a Steelrunner. Could be false advertising. They print Jak's stuff and ads for talking tools, so I doubt the newspapers fact check all that much. A company claiming Bendalloy or Speed as a cost lets them charge a premium when they could have an alternative business practice or machinery doing the job - like what we see with people speculating how the Vanishers were stealing cargo with Sliders or Steelrunners which Wax shot down pretty readily. This also obscures business secrets with misdirection. We have fast food and speedy message delivery without the Metallic Arts, so maybe we're seeing people par-cook or freeze meals, or maybe the invention of the radio allowing for long-distance communication before it hits the general public. I wouldn't take the broadsheets as too reliable unless specifically confirmed by Brandon as factual.

  16. In the reading, Brandon emphasized when he said that they were 'like bracers' which is how metalminds are described. What if it is storing part of her Identity to prevent her from transforming?

  21. Hello everyone! I had a friend get insanely into Mistborn in high school and he begged me to read it. I read often so I gave it a shot, then set it down after chapter 1 and let it sit on my shelf for 5 years. Earlier this year on January 6th, I bought TWoK without even knowing about the Cosmere, read until chapter 11 when Kaladin decides to run Bridge 4, and LOVED IT. I then looked up Brandon Sanderson and stumbled onto the Cosmere and immediately dropped TWoK to read his published order first (yes I went back to my local bookstore and got Elantris that same day). Since January 6th I have caught up to Sixth of the Dusk and have loved everything. It feels crazy good and monumental to arrive on Sixth of the Dusk THE DAY that he announced his new secret novel is an extension of it. Looking forward to interacting with people and being a part of the community! I'm including my tier list of my read works so far just cause tier lists are fun

  23. As we understand it right now, they'd be able to Store the ability to use each power in a Nicrosilmind, which they could later Tap to increase their power just as with any other attribute. That's a pretty powerful ability, if you ask me.

  24. The Shard itself would not duplicate or create new anything. Those shards are already 1/16 of infinity, and are just giant balls of Investiture. The formerly Mortal Vessel of the Shard can indeed have children and those children would be special, but we dont know any specifics.

  26. I've had this discussion several places, I am posting it here. Specifically, there are two threads in the Backerkit discussion for Sanderson's current campaign. Spammers have discovered that the default settings in Backerkit will send email notifications to users when they get followed. They create bot accounts in Backerkit and follow thousands of accounts, causing those users to receive an email with a suggestive title and a suspicious website. Then, the 'followers' page for that user on Backerkit involuntarily hosts a link to that same website. There is no way to turn off these emails until you get your first follower, after which you can unsubscribe from the email or send the notifications to spam. There is no way to prevent people from following you or boot followers from your profile. The only solution is to email support at backerkit and report the user. If you're pledging secret novel 5 and this concerns you, reach out to Backerkit and let them know. If you're seriously bothered, consider depledging before the campaign completes as you won't be able to delete your account while you have a pledge project unshipped.

  27. Yeah I can see that interpretation, fair enough. I do think her being related to at least one would make sense, but as you pointed out it would be kind of odd if both were (though not impossible, for sure). The other option is that neither were and she was what people take as the sign of misfortune. Fun side note: When Hoid makes an illusion of a dragon to show Kaladin what they look like, it's a pearlescent one

  31. It does not have to be against anybody's will, and the investiture does not have to be unwanted. Shai's "Shaizan" stamp still leaks red smoke, and she does that to herself with her own investiture. It's any change from the normal or any outside adjustment. If, before Tanavast was killed and Honor Splintered, an OdiumSpren asked "I want to be honorable, can you help me?" and he did, it would still be "Red" because it is a change and different, but would not be against Intent to help a Spren become more Honorable. . .

  34. Figured I'd start a thread for furthering input; since there is going to be a Mistborn as an antagonist come era 3, what kinds of tools would help them perform the traditional processes of a Mistborn assassin/sneak/warrior? 1. Cloth-covered coins: we see Vin use this a little in HoA, where having a little cloth covering you coins used for Steeljumping gives you greater stealth. 2. Aluminum daggers: since this is going to be a lot more common come era 3, it would prove quite useful for a Mistborn to have some upgrades to their hand-to-hand weaponry. Maybe their would even be an alloy of aluminum to make it sturdier. You could also coat the blade(s) in a dark substance to keep it from being shiny in the dark. 3. Aluminum vials/pouches: this would keep your metals safe from being Pushed or Pulled on, so no need to worry about losing them in combat. 4. Fingerless aluminum-lined gloves: now, I see a lot of potential for these; you can handle Bendalloy nuggets in your palm to ingest while keeping them safe from Allomancy, you can add aluminum covered steel knuckles for more punching force, when punching a Leecher they won't be able to Leech you, and with the finger tips exposed you have more dexterity and can Leech your own targets. 5. Ball-bearing cannon box; not really something they're going to use to often as it's big and clunky, but imagine a box with 100-300 steel ball-bearings held in place by a thin cloth. Then put the box on its side and attach it to a crossbow handle. Basically, this allows the Mistborn to use a duralumin/pewter/Steelpush to make a massively destructive grapeshot when in battle. 6. Allomantic body piercings; another source of Allomantic reserves that my be more tolerant to being Leeched or may be usable for longer periods of time. Plus, they can just be kept in the body without the need to ingest them if the Mistborn were to be attacked unexpectedly. They could also be used in an emergency as a Pushable weapon or item to break their fall if they lose their coin pouch and have no other metal. What else do you guys think would be a good tool for Mistborn?

  36. He tenses as Swordfish draws closer. He searches his memory for any information on this epic, frantically trying to remember his weakness. He's afraid, and worried that he might have to use his powers. Perhaps he'd have to sacrifice the kid. For the greater good. No! What was he thinking? He should save all the lives that he could. He breathes in deep, then touches the concrete wall of the hideout. He forms a chunk of it into a long, silver sword and a pocket of air behind it so he can take the sword out. He immediatley feels an intense hatred towards the epic. Lavoisier was much more powerful than him. Why should he get to threaten him? He calmed himself down. Save the child. That was his objective. Save the stupid, whiny, ugly little- Sparks. This was going to be hard. Regardless, he jumped out from the shadows and slipped his sword behind Swordfish's blade, blocking him from slitting the childs throat. He pushed the kid aside and fell into s swordfighting stance.

  37. I think I've used this analogy before but it best sums it up: Aviars are Sprens without oaths that grant allomancy. They have an immense number of advantages over other sources of investiture: They are not restricted to a specific inheritance. They do not need to comply with a series of restrictive rules. The amount of powers they can grant seems to be equivalent to the number of bird species existing (in the entire cosmere) It is highly reusable and can be passed on to someone else with very few mishaps. This is hemalurgy, it is the drawbacks of hemalurgy, surgebinding without the drawbacks of surgebinding.

  39. Well, that was the interpretation I gave to the fact that Frost mentions only having known two and what Starling says: "She knew some, unlike her uncle, saw her albinism as a flaw. A sign of misfortune, come from what happened to her parents..." I interpreted that to mean that Star's parents are the other two albino dragons, but now that you mentioned it it is true that it is not confirmed and it could be that I simply misinterpreted it.

  41. Xisis owning the ship also gave people the impression that Crow is the captain. Note that the bracers are "silver against her skin" I don't know but that implies this is either silver or aluminum interacting with dragon magic. My guess is aluminum, and the silver is in there to throw us off. Full aetherbound appears to mean simply be fully bonded to a live aether(as opposed to a dead one). The radiant seems to be a skybreaker to me, since he flew in just his shardplate, and the windrunner glyph looks nothing like a bird. That said some others were suggesting a radiant with transportation, though I find that suspect, given the flight and the radiant asking about laws.

  43. It's because you don't find and get Ryshadium, you are chosen by them. Most won't be that lucky. WoR ch 81: Historically speaking horses weren't really used for fighting on Roshar. They are especially expensive, require special care and aren't well adapted to the Rosharan environment. The first nation to use cavalry as a fighting formation was Shinovar during their numerous invasions of Roshar, which most likely happened after Recreance, thus after the Radiant era. Therefore most Radiant would not use horses like the classical medieval knights. Even now cavalry is still very rare because of how rare and expensive horses are. In WoR ch 67 Dalinar remarks that loosing on a plateau run could easily cost more than what won gemstone would be worth. I'm uncertain how useful Ryshadium would be for most Orders. Two of them can fly, so horses for them would be pointless and other Radiants would be Lashed by them to arrive quickly to their destination - as seen in the Starfalls vision. On a battlefield their horses would be extremely vulnerable and could expose their rider to enemy strikes when killed.. Moreover Surges are a devastating weapon to wield - Jasnah soulcasted air all around her into oil and set it on fire, which would kill her horse. Unless they somehow get a Shardplate for their horses (which should exist after Recreance if that was practiced, the lack of such horse Shardplates implies it wasn't), Radiants should not bring horses to a Surge-fight. Adolin learned this lesson the hard way. So while Ryshadium are called a Third Shard, I wouldn't necessarily assume that they were called that during the Radiant era. For me it seems like a modern development, rather than something carried from ancient times. I think spren fill the role of "a knight's horse" - it's not just about riding on a horse, it's about companionship, that's what spren are to their knights. And Kaladin hates horses. He would rather ride on a Chull than on a horse. Imagine, a graceful knight in a glowing full plate riding on an oversized crab.
