  9. BEGIN LOG If love is so fragile, then why continue to repair it after it cracks? Once it has filled its surface with this many cracks, wouldn’t it be easier to leave it be and let it decay and shatter and fall apart over time? Yes. It would be easier. But that doesn’t mean it’s the correct thing to do. Love is so fragile because it needs to be constantly repaired. It is an essential part of love, that need for constant repair, for maintenance, for reassurance of devotion. Some may wonder why to keep that lamp on, to keep its ornate ceramic looking beautiful, despite the cracks. “Look at your lamp,” They say, “It is cracked and flawed. Shouldn’t you discard it and put a new flawless copy in its place?” And I say to them, “You know nothing of this. This lamp has seen much. Endured much. It’s stories are nestled in the cracks spreading across its ceramic. It’s journey is weaved into the stone it is made of as if a testament of all it has seen and heard. Is this not a sign of flawless and perfect existence? Perfection in imperfection?” This lamp, this love.. It will dim. It will brighten. Sometimes the power will blink out, leaving us in the dark. But the lights will come back on. And we will fight to love. We will choose to love, and to live, and we will nurture the cracks. Let them settle. And when someone asks about them, we will tell that story. I will engrave bluebirds into our lamp. I will stamp ravens to the surface, let crows flutter onto the stone. I will put roses, and chrysanthemums, and moonflowers and sunflowers, and I will sprinkle it in color so that when it is finished, it will be colorful in ways you only could have dreamed of. I have made mistakes. I have cracked our lamp. I will mend the crack. I will transform it into something beautiful. I will build on it, and build into a future with you. This is my vow to you.

  11. Hey guys!! I am a huge fan of epic fantasy and sci-fi. My dad was the first to get me into Sanderson's books. I now have read a lot of his best works, such as the Stormlight Archive and Mistborn. (I think stormlight is better) I just wanted to make myself known and to say hi.

  13. I provide a second opinion. As a current chemistry student, an Oxidation-Reduction reaction is indeed a chemical change, redirecting the formal charge of the constituent particles, affecting which bonds they can form in the future. Color is a property of chemistry; depending on the structure of the measured particles, different forms of light can be absorbed, reflected, and emitted. A chemical change would certainly effect the color of a material. Sorry, @Treamayne. It is my duty to support fact. With simultaneous approval and apologies, the Ultimate Archivist.

  15. Spoilers for all of Mistborn Era 2 I recently reread The Alloy of Law, and I was somewhat stunned by a particular line said by Miles about the tenants of survivorism: To me, this sounds almost word for word what autonomy requires of her followers. Ruthless self determinism and the need to prove yourself through individual survival. These tenants also seem far removed not only from Kelsier's actual beliefs, but from the origins of survivorism in the final empire. This may just be due to the obvious shifts in the religion due to power structures within their society, but it seems so similar to the tenants of autonomy that it stuck out to me.

  16. Yes, it does sound like it may have been influenced by Autonomy. The WoB says (about the Doctrine): So, it seems that early post-catecendre saw significant shifts in the Survivorist doctrine, and those shifts have become the status quo.

  18. You know your not wrong. Maybe Autonomy is using misdirection and playing the long game. Giving Harmony and those allied with him an obvious target, the Set and Trell, all the while slowly corrupting a pre-existing religion that has become the most prevalent to her own ends. Sounds almost poetic, the religion created by Kelsier to give the Skaa hope and the will to rebel against tyranny, becoming slowly corrupted by a tyrant far worse than the Lord Ruler to control the masses. 20. When is brandon going to realize that he can just crowdfund a movie. like he made 41 million dollars from the year of sanderson kickstarter alone, and another 23 million from the WoR leatherbound. 64 million dollars for relatively small products. The LOTR trilogy cost 514 million dollars, adjusted for inflation. That’s not that much more. Okay sure it’s about 10x as much, but the fandom would be WAY more excited about getting a movie than about the Year of Sanderson. Probably around 10x as excited, by my estimation. And then Brandon would have COMPLETE creative control. It’s the perfect solution.

  22. If mutation and forced things like Hemalurgy are on the table, probably, but like growing an extra limb via DNA modification I think making it functional would be a higher (but still attainable) goal. A Shard could just Do It, and the Nightwatcher probably could too. Any Selish Magic that doesnt have some specific limitation (like Forgery's likelihood requirement) could probably do it since they theoretically reprogram reality with complex languages. There's also that one UnMade that essentially transforms you into a giant gemheart. If you can make it fully functional, you'd be able to hold/trap two Spren. But Singer's need the Investiture abundance of the Highstorm to actually affect the Form change, for that purpose it probably wouldnt do more than just keep it trapped and ready like it was stored in an external gem. On the other hand, if one was normal and one was a Voidspren, you might get the ability to attune either set of Rhythms and control the Red glow of your eyes like Venli does (assuming that doesnt require a dominant Radiant Spren).

  28. We have some exciting news to announce. So far in order to obtain some unpublished works of Brandon's, you'd have to email him through his site, and his assistants would distribute them. Well now you won't need to wait for that, because we will be in charge of distributing Aether of Night! All you have to do is post in this topic (you'll need a 17th Shard account, but that's it), and our staff will PM you the document. You do not need to post an email address here; we will send it to you through this website. Once we do this, we'll remove your post here. We'll be using this topic as a to-do list for requests. Ideally since we have lots of staff members, we will get this out to you soon, within a week or two. We hope you're excited about this, so many of you will be able to get this text in a much more obvious way now! You will receive a .docx file, and if you need to convert it into a .pdf or .epub, there are many converters to do that for you. (We are not distributing the old prose version of White Sand; that is distributed in Brandon's newsletters.) Thank you Dragonsteel for letting 17S do this! Edit as of 2024: This is still going! We've gone through over 300 pages of replies distributing. It's just that we remove posts here once we send them out.

  30. Who are you calling different? *I've done this joke so many times.* I think that those Windspren yanked from Shadesmar when he swore each ideal, as the groups of them seem to get bigger and then at 4th there was enough of them to form plate. Just a theory, no actual evidence.

  33. RoW ch 114: In my opinion this suggests that once you swear the 4th Ideal, you've got the same group of Lesser Spren hanging around you, ready to become your Shardplate at your command. But that's only after you swear the 4th Ideal, before you just attract any Windspren close to you, and that is what Kaladin was doing before RoW in my opinion. It even makes a little sense. Kaladin and Syl need to be close together, otherwise Syl will start losing herself and they will lose awareness of each other, as seen in RoW. What if Kaladin was in a place with no wind and no Windspren? He would be unable to summon his Shardplate, if he just summons random spren that are close by, as they should also work by proximity like Syl does. It makes more sense that once you obtain a Shardplate, those spren are staying close to you, so no matter the location you're in, you can summon them.

  36. No problem! Happy to help. Asexual and aromantic are not interchangeable. The easiest way for me to explain this is probably: Picture a book written for younger teens, like KOTLC or Percy Jackson. The romance in these books is very chaste and not very suggestive. The characters are probably experiencing primarily romantic attraction. Aromantic people don’t really fall in love, but can experience sexual attraction. Alloromantic is the opposite of aromantic. Now picture a book written for older teens or adults, like Fourth Wing or Colleen Hoover books (I assume, I haven’t read them). Spicy books. Not a lot of simply romantic, cute, cuddly scenes like in KOTLC. These books are really mislabelled as romance novels, and the “romance” in them is based on sexual stuff. Asexual people can experience the cute cuddly stuff, but don’t really experience sexual attraction. It’s not necessarily people thinking sex is gross - many ace people actually enjoy sex - but there isn’t that… pull??? To have sex with people??? Idk I’m ace through and through. Allosexual is the opposite of asexual. Sorry for the long-winded rambling, hope this helps!

  38. Alright everyone, it's time to post your most far-fetched cosmere theories and try to support them as best you can. I'll go first: The first sentence of The Final Empire, "Ash fell from the sky," is actually referring to Shalash, who found a way to get offworld. The version of her on Roshar is actually a Lightweaving. I've got no WoBs or evidence, but STILL! (Don't take any of these seriously, by the way.)

  39. Hm. Not sure how to fix that, I don't often post images. Can you see this one? "Let me ask you a question. If your Author died, would you continue to exist? Of course not. You would be naught but a memory. Obviously, Nameless' Author did not die, but the principle is similar. Characters like Butt Venture are connected to all Authors as a fundamental part of TLT's being, and so can withstand the death or loss of connection to any Author. For even if all the current Authors perished or were cut off from TLT, Butt Venture would still exist as long as TLT itself continued to exist, merely dormant, waiting to be reawakened. Shaown's thesis completely ignores this fundamental difference, a difference that Shaown, as a character with faint similarities to Butt himself, perhaps does not understand." Nameless' lawyer gestured to a large stack of papers on his desk. "Platypus's transformation, incredible as it may be, does not change the events of history. Additionally, these scientific papers, which I did submit as evidence in this case, show a significant consensus among the scientific community of TLT that the Enullers are more than capable of containing all chaotic-light energy within TLT, even if that energy was fully unbound. Additionally, these papers show conclusively that there is practically no free chaotic-light energy outside of TLT. Yes, the substance of worlds is made from it, but it would take power comparable to that of a full Narrator to access that power. Outside of TLT, the worst Nameless could do, even if was malicious in intent, would be to gather enough energy to slightly manipulate events in unobtrusive ways. He would not be very powerful even by the standards of many outer threads, much less when measured on the scale of Narrators. Also, for that explanation about Thaidakar and Nameless coexisting, I would read Frashier's paper On the Interactions Between Authors: The Theory of Quasi-Canonicity." Nameless lawyer smiled, thinking again of how wonderful his retirement would be. "Now, as for your question of forgery, yes, I am accusing you of that. As you know, the only way I was able to obtain this copy of Nameless' book was through the copies of all submitted evidence that my legal team received, and as such, I have been unable to verify the authenticity of this book. However, I do know that it makes no sense for Nameless to refer to you, a person who is indeed fictional, as a person that his book is supposedly based upon. I would like to posit that you have pursued this lawsuit out of greed and a grudge against Nameless, not because of any damages to your person or image. As I said earlier, this book merely makes mention of you, with a description so brief it could for all we know be entirely coincidental! Nameless never met nor heard of you in his lifetime, and so I think it entirely plausible that his was, as the disclaimer intends, a simple coincidence." And no, I am not nearly done. Nameless' lawyer added in his head. Not when you're falling right into my trap.

  46. I've actually thought about this recently. I think that it is actually going to be Adolin, and that he has trained perfectly for the job. Adolin's calling is literally dueling, meaning that he has trained almost nonstop in a goal-oriented environment. He is also storming good at it. We know that he doesn't really like normal battle, that it isn't really a test of skill for him. In all the books, we hear him talking about Dueling, and we hear how good he is. We even have potential foreshadowing. When Dalinar is attempting to unite the Warcamps in WoR, he appoints Adolin as his champion to duel people for their shards. It would be beautiful if that happened again. Anyways, that's my two bits. Hope you enjoyed it.
