  1. “Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive, today.” —Mat Cuathon, Wheel of Time Find the moments of joy, mkay? In a sky of darkness and despair, find the stars. (If you’re @The Bookwyrm, find the giant balls of burning gas and admire the science behind them) I don’t have time to respond to everyone’s SU’s, but I see so many people who are so alone, and so lost, and sad. I see you. I remember you. I hear you. If you need me, I’m here. Keep laughing, ok? Find reasons to smile. Sometimes, we just have to take advice from the Lord of Scars. If we can laugh, we are winning.

  5. Just saw that they add this in the project update: All his life, Sixth of the Dusk has been a traditional trapper of Aviar—the supernatural birds his people bond with—on the deadly island of Patji. Then one fateful night he propels his people into a race to modernize before they can be conquered by the Ones Above, invaders from the stars who want to exploit the Aviar. But it’s a race they’re losing, and Dusk fears his people will lose themselves in the effort. When a chance comes to sail into the expanse of the emberdark beyond a mystical portal, Dusk sets off to find his people’s salvation with only a canoe, his birds, and all the grit and canniness of a Patji trapper. Elsewhere in the emberdark is a young dragon chained in human form: Starling of the starship Dynamic. She and her ragtag crew of exiles are deep in debt and on the brink of losing their freedom. So when she finds an ancient map to a hidden portal between the emberdark and the physical realm, she seizes the chance at a lucrative discovery. These unlikely allies might just be the solution to each other’s crisis. In their search for independence, Dusk and Starling face perilous bargains, poisonous politics, and the destructive echo of a dead god. I guess this would explain why Xisis is in such a bad situation.

  6. Figured I'd start a thread for furthering input; since there is going to be a Mistborn as an antagonist come era 3, what kinds of tools would help them perform the traditional processes of a Mistborn assassin/sneak/warrior? 1. Cloth-covered coins: we see Vin use this a little in HoA, where having a little cloth covering you coins used for Steeljumping gives you greater stealth. 2. Aluminum daggers: since this is going to be a lot more common come era 3, it would prove quite useful for a Mistborn to have some upgrades to their hand-to-hand weaponry. Maybe their would even be an alloy of aluminum to make it sturdier. You could also coat the blade(s) in a dark substance to keep it from being shiny in the dark. 3. Aluminum vials/pouches: this would keep your metals safe from being Pushed or Pulled on, so no need to worry about losing them in combat. 4. Fingerless aluminum-lined gloves: now, I see a lot of potential for these; you can handle Bendalloy nuggets in your palm to ingest while keeping them safe from Allomancy, you can add aluminum covered steel knuckles for more punching force, when punching a Leecher they won't be able to Leech you, and with the finger tips exposed you have more dexterity and can Leech your own targets. 5. Ball-bearing cannon box; not really something they're going to use to often as it's big and clunky, but imagine a box with 100-300 steel ball-bearings held in place by a thin cloth. Then put the box on its side and attach it to a crossbow handle. Basically, this allows the Mistborn to use a duralumin/pewter/Steelpush to make a massively destructive grapeshot when in battle. 6. Allomantic body piercings; another source of Allomantic reserves that my be more tolerant to being Leeched or may be usable for longer periods of time. Plus, they can just be kept in the body without the need to ingest them if the Mistborn were to be attacked unexpectedly. They could also be used in an emergency as a Pushable weapon or item to break their fall if they lose their coin pouch and have no other metal. What else do you guys think would be a good tool for Mistborn?

  9. I was casually reading The Lost Metal when I came across an interesting description of everyone's favorite character: Allomancer Jak. In the above excerpt (emphasis mine) we see a couple of faulty descriptions of Allomancy. Flight obviously refers to Coinshots or Lurchers. Eating rocks is, technically, a very good description of what Allomancers do to fuel their abilities. The talking to birds, though...that's a new one. As best we know, no Allomantic ability is capable of this. Obviously, the story is conflating a few different aspects of Scadrial's magic systems under the broad term "Allomancy" and we can't expect a miner in (what was very likely) the Roughs to get all the details right. So, where did Wayne's mother get the idea of talking to birds? Well, the obvious answer is a kandra. Obvious, so long as you have a modicum of sanity left to you. But I, free from the mortal constraints of such petty things as rationality, had a thought. What if Wayne's mother wasn't conflating Hemalurgy with Allomancy, but Feruchemy? We're all familiar with how F-Duralumin works to a certain extent by now. Tap blank Connection in a foreign land, and you are instantly able to speak and comprehend the local language, albeit with an accent. The implication is that this is among the simplest application of Feruchemical Connection, and that more sophisticated uses likely exist. So, I propose a fairly intuitive extrapolation. What if you somehow manipulated Connection to facilitate communication between animals? Inherently, a Feruchemist tapping Connection could make animals more trusting. So, this isn't a huge step forwards. But, yeah. This was just fun to type out. Thoughts? Longshot97

All the videos and streams are clearly labeled if that's the topic and if he's going to read something spoilery he gives warning at that point in the video (or speech at the con) so you can bail out then. Not to mention all the readings and wobs do end up transcribed, either via Brandon and staff or the Arcanum. I can get feeling like there are too many streams, though people like me would absolutely prefer more. It certainly could feel overwhelming to people.

  14. This WoB is newer and Brandon directly said many forms are capable of reproducing. This is as straightforward as it can be. And you can also be fertile and asexual. Many reasons. You want to lower your chances of fertilization (but it still happened), you don't like being in the Mateform, you just have an opportunity now as your partner is leaving shortly and you can't wait for a storm to change forms, you didn't become a Mateform unlike your partner (it happened before Listeners started using gemstones to trap spren), or maybe something tragic happened and it wasn't consensual. Does it make sense now? The definition of "several" from Oxford Languages is "more than two but not many." Mateform and Slaveform aren't the only forms that feel sexual attraction, but this is separate from being able to reproduce. Asexuallity doesn't mean infertility, those things are separate.

  18. I think I've used this analogy before but it best sums it up: Aviars are Sprens without oaths that grant allomancy. They have an immense number of advantages over other sources of investiture: They are not restricted to a specific inheritance. They do not need to comply with a series of restrictive rules. The amount of powers they can grant seems to be equivalent to the number of bird species existing (in the entire cosmere) It is highly reusable and can be passed on to someone else with very few mishaps. This is hemalurgy, it is the drawbacks of hemalurgy, surgebinding without the drawbacks of surgebinding.

  19. I've had this discussion several places, I am posting it here. Specifically, there are two threads in the Backerkit discussion for Sanderson's current campaign. Spammers have discovered that the default settings in Backerkit will send email notifications to users when they get followed. They create bot accounts in Backerkit and follow thousands of accounts, causing those users to receive an email with a suggestive title and a suspicious website. Then, the 'followers' page for that user on Backerkit involuntarily hosts a link to that same website. There is no way to turn off these emails until you get your first follower, after which you can unsubscribe from the email or send the notifications to spam. There is no way to prevent people from following you or boot followers from your profile. The only solution is to email support at backerkit and report the user. If you're pledging secret novel 5 and this concerns you, reach out to Backerkit and let them know. If you're seriously bothered, consider depledging before the campaign completes as you won't be able to delete your account while you have a pledge project unshipped.

  21. Allomantic Stick: This would be a very sturdy short metal pole that has some sort of claw mechanism on the end. A Mistborn, or really anyone who can pull/push on metal, would stab this inside of a building and then activate the claw mechanism. It would keep the pole locked in the building and then the Mistborn could have a place to pull themselves to. This could be useful if you were going to fight someone in an area that you know about beforehand. You could put some of these in the area and be better prepared. They would also work in the ground to be similar to the Allomantic highways in era 1.

  22. Hello everyone! I had a friend get insanely into Mistborn in high school and he begged me to read it. I read often so I gave it a shot, then set it down after chapter 1 and let it sit on my shelf for 5 years. Earlier this year on January 6th, I bought TWoK without even knowing about the Cosmere, read until chapter 11 when Kaladin decides to run Bridge 4, and LOVED IT. I then looked up Brandon Sanderson and stumbled onto the Cosmere and immediately dropped TWoK to read his published order first (yes I went back to my local bookstore and got Elantris that same day). Since January 6th I have caught up to Sixth of the Dusk and have loved everything. It feels crazy good and monumental to arrive on Sixth of the Dusk THE DAY that he announced his new secret novel is an extension of it. Looking forward to interacting with people and being a part of the community! I'm including my tier list of my read works so far just cause tier lists are fun

Random school story: So my school had a Christmas Jars assembly sometime last December, right? Well, the Admin thought it would be a good idea to put it at the end of the day, so that everyone was done with classes and could go to the assembly... Let's just say there was about a 10%-15% attendance rate. Literally everyone just left because there was no point in being at school anymore. The end.

  25. Allomancy and Feruchemy grant a strictly limited set of abilities The other powers require an external fuel (Stormlight, purified Dor, Breaths) Aethers bound you to a core aether and are not fully usable without extra fuel on many worlds Spren need Stormlight. Without it a spren gives you only a blade and maybe armour, no powers. But in that case she already would have left Yolen.

  26. Reading through The Sunlit Man and noticed that right before Hoid checks in on Sigzil, that Sigzil is expecting Kaladin to be reaching out to him during a storm “like on Roshar”. Isn’t this something only Dalinar can do as far as we know through RoW? Could this also align with the “son of Tanavast” theories?

  28. You're conflating gender and biological sex. In modern day English, these are two different things. The grammatical and common day usage are now only partially related to biological sex. Besides, gender and sex have nothing to do with your sexual or romantic attraction, pretty much any combo is possible.

  30. Since I learned about the concept of eras in the Cosmere, I have been intrigued by how Brandon plans to implement his magical systems into technology in the future. Perhaps the most revealing WoBs on the subject are the following: So we have that Scadrial and Roshar will have almost parallel technological developments, with Scadrial heading towards Cyberpunk and Roshar towards "Magepunk". If we think about it carefully, the result is that in the future the Scadrians will use technology more aesthetically similar to Startrek/Starwars while the Rosharians will have something more similar to Warhammer 40k (with a lot of distance). The first with ships with more aerodynamic profiles (more similar to those of our world) and the second with more cubic and robust ships (perhaps as a derivation of the 4th Bridge). But I have always had the persistent thought that the way things are set out, it could be the case that these roles are reversed. Note: It's obvious that Brandon won't go in that direction but I still wanted to put this idea down in writing. My approach is simple, Scadrial apparently in Era 2 has a great crutch, the metal arts, the presence of this form of investiture has delayed and redirected its development (High knowledge in metallurgy but still does not have a radio) I have even its technology most advanced coming from an area with few metalborn is entirely based on the mechanization of said arts. What happens if we extrapolate that constant to the future technological development of the planet? Well, we have a society with technology dependent on 17 raw materials for its operation and its realmatic properties (This is far from the technology of our world where current developments are based on the experimentation of compounds and mechanical properties. that arise from different geometric configurations in their atomic structure) This line of thought arose after reading the preview of "Sixth II" years ago. As for Roshar, although at first glance it might seem that its technological development may go in a totally strange and alien direction than one might think, I feel that the opposite is the case. The fabrials are developing in directions very similar to our technology. Additionally, the surge of transformation with a user with sufficient knowledge of the axes could produce large quantities of theoretical compounds (from two-dimensional materials to high entropy alloys) that in the Scadrian technological aspect were discarded due to being allomantically inert. Well, these are my thoughts on the matter, given the information we have so far obviously that will not be the scenario that will play out but it seemed good to write it down. As a fun note due to this I imagine that the Scadrian ships end up looking like the classic flying saucer, it would fit a lot with the tone that was developed in Era 2.

  32. Do remember that the Prologue we've seen is a draft and will likely have some changes when released proper. But as for your questions I might have some ideas. For Anti-Voidlight, your guess is as good as mine I'm afraid, it would require an understanding of Rhythms that I'm not sure how Gavilar could get without the aid of the Listeners. For how Gavilar became the most Cosmere-Aware-without-being-Cosmere-Aware person ever, I imagine it's similar to the creation of the Set on Scadrial, he found out there was power and went looking for it, though I'd say he was marginally more successful since he wasn't just some Shard's puppet. What Gavilar did? Setting the True Desolation in motion, the Voidspren needed a way past the Oathpact since Taln would never break and Gavilar had found that way, moving Voidlight and probably Voidspren from Braize to Roshar was just the beginning. Allowing Ulim the chance to get into Venli's head and eventually summon the Everstorm. As for Axindweth and Gereh, no idea. We'll probably learn more s it becomes clear that Axindweth wanted the True Desolation to happen, she worked with Gavilar and gave Ulim to Venli. Gereh was probably trying to stop her.

  37. We don't know enough about them to say much in the general case, and in some practical senses they may well work as you suggest here. If they can't be tapped, for example, then application of the ironminds on Malwish ships becomes very different and are a depletable resource on voyages. But that doesn't mean that the Malwish can't have dedicated Metalborn who deal with the excess weight in some sort of centralized facility. That the Bands could do it all but guarantees that medallions could also do it (theoretically, assuming that the medallions and Bands work according to the same principles), though there are obviously substantial technical hurdles separating the two already. However, we do have a WoB indicating that medallions grant the ability to store attributes in a metalmind other than the relevant portion of the medallion itself. This seems to suggest that a medallion allowing storage of an attribute would allow storage of that attribute in an appropriate metalmind of another medallion: We also do see people tapping an attribute and also storing it, so in at least some cases the Feruchemical ability must be bidirectional (storable and tappable, both): I really wish we knew, specifically, why the heat medallions at the end of BoM couldn't be refilled. It's a puzzle, especially when compared with some of the Set's similar technology. My current suspicion revolves around Identity of the medallion itself, but suspicion is all it's going to be for a while I did not forget about Straff but I'm not sure this is the argument you are thinking. By "breeding program" I presumed you meant increasing the proportion of Metalborn among the Malwish by selectively combining lines of descent, and that's the part that we haven't seen work despite at least some efforts to do so. I'm not sure what you mean to indicate with a "decent clip" of Allomancer production, given that we don't have much information on how many existed across generations; if the number of Allomancers per X population increased or stayed the same that would be one thing, but if it dipped it would be exactly the opposite. We have zero evidence (that I recall, at least) that two Metalborn are more likely to produce Metalborn children than one Metalborn and one normal parent. We know (anecdotally and without citation, but at least from a character in-text) that Allomancy fades pretty quickly outside of strictly noble lineages. From what we've seen it appears that Allomancy and Feruchemy become less pronounced in populations over time absent specific events to offset that (the Lerasium beads for Rashek's friends, Sazed making Spook Mistborn, etc.). We don't know anything about the natural Mistings, maybe that's a baseline rate among Scadrians that hasn't been (can't be?) breached. But in any case it's not as easy as "get a Metalborn parent in the mix" when skaa Allomancers' powers dwindle so quickly across generations. Maybe the Malwish are just stuck with the baseline rate of natural Allomancers and can't alter it via matchmaking-- we don't even know if natural Allomancy is heritable. The unifying trait of consistently heritable Allomancy on Scadrial is Rashek's altering of people into nobles and skaa, with only the nobles getting "extra" access to Allomancy. Given their dependence on medallions to live it's possible, perhaps likely, that the Malwish probably have about as large a population at any given time as they can support. And if their population is limited by the medallions available then arbitrarily expanding the population generation after generation is a pretty difficult strategy to pursue, especially given that even among the much more Metalborn-rich Northerners Allomancy is pretty rare. If an approach that is "more children lead to more of the useful medallions" doesn't pay off pretty quickly you'd have some problems. Though of course it's possible that the limiting factors on Southern populations are not related to the number of medallions available, in which case that pressure would be far less intense. And all of that leaves aside other issues (practical, cultural, or social) which a breeding plan could introduce.

I wish that I had been able to put more illustrations in it, but there simply wasn't time. I am inordinately fond of my Thaylen eyebrows illustration, though. I feel like it really captures the spirit of the mashup. I'm also quite pleased with the Unkalaki tongue twisters. If only I had figured out a way to stick "Airsick lowlanders!" in somewhere. Anyway, here is the book! (Spoilered for size) I hope you like it! I also had some partial drafts for Stormlight versions of other Seuss books that I didn't make the cut for inclusion. So there may eventually be a sequel or improved draft that includes The Bitter Battle Book (about the war on the shattered plains) and a version of Green Eggs and Ham ("Amaram, Lord Amaram, I do not like the Diagram").
