  1. I was casually reading The Lost Metal when I came across an interesting description of everyone's favorite character: Allomancer Jak. In the above excerpt (emphasis mine) we see a couple of faulty descriptions of Allomancy. Flight obviously refers to Coinshots or Lurchers. Eating rocks is, technically, a very good description of what Allomancers do to fuel their abilities. The talking to birds, though...that's a new one. As best we know, no Allomantic ability is capable of this. Obviously, the story is conflating a few different aspects of Scadrial's magic systems under the broad term "Allomancy" and we can't expect a miner in (what was very likely) the Roughs to get all the details right. So, where did Wayne's mother get the idea of talking to birds? Well, the obvious answer is a kandra. Obvious, so long as you have a modicum of sanity left to you. But I, free from the mortal constraints of such petty things as rationality, had a thought. What if Wayne's mother wasn't conflating Hemalurgy with Allomancy, but Feruchemy? We're all familiar with how F-Duralumin works to a certain extent by now. Tap blank Connection in a foreign land, and you are instantly able to speak and comprehend the local language, albeit with an accent. The implication is that this is among the simplest application of Feruchemical Connection, and that more sophisticated uses likely exist. So, I propose a fairly intuitive extrapolation. What if you somehow manipulated Connection to facilitate communication between animals? Inherently, a Feruchemist tapping Connection could make animals more trusting. So, this isn't a huge step forwards. But, yeah. This was just fun to type out. Thoughts? Longshot97

  3. Just saw that they add this in the project update: All his life, Sixth of the Dusk has been a traditional trapper of Aviar—the supernatural birds his people bond with—on the deadly island of Patji. Then one fateful night he propels his people into a race to modernize before they can be conquered by the Ones Above, invaders from the stars who want to exploit the Aviar. But it’s a race they’re losing, and Dusk fears his people will lose themselves in the effort. When a chance comes to sail into the expanse of the emberdark beyond a mystical portal, Dusk sets off to find his people’s salvation with only a canoe, his birds, and all the grit and canniness of a Patji trapper. Elsewhere in the emberdark is a young dragon chained in human form: Starling of the starship Dynamic. She and her ragtag crew of exiles are deep in debt and on the brink of losing their freedom. So when she finds an ancient map to a hidden portal between the emberdark and the physical realm, she seizes the chance at a lucrative discovery. These unlikely allies might just be the solution to each other’s crisis. In their search for independence, Dusk and Starling face perilous bargains, poisonous politics, and the destructive echo of a dead god. I guess this would explain why Xisis is in such a bad situation.

(If you’re @The Bookwyrm, find the giant balls of burning gas and admire the science behind them) I don’t have time to respond to everyone’s SU’s, but I see so many people who are so alone, and so lost, and sad. I see you. I remember you. I hear you. If you need me, I’m here. Keep laughing, ok? Find reasons to smile. Sometimes, we just have to take advice from the Lord of Scars. If we can laugh, we are winning.

  9. Hello friends WARNING: FULL COSMERE SPOILERS AHEAD Following the reading of the newest secret project, there's one question that (currently) is the most exciting to me personally. There USED to be a perpendicularity on Dhatri. This has so many implications. I'm just going to go through my thought process, please tell me where your opinion differs or alternative theories. The first question here is, does that mean a shard was in residence on Dhatri? I think not. I think this is evidence that a significant aether presence can create a perpendicularity just like any other massive amount of pooled investiture, and that a shard was not in residence here. If we follow that assumption, the next logical assumption is that the aether is dead - especially since we see that Aditil's aether is dead. I think this is implying that the aether was eradicated on Dhatri, and that it happened fairly recently (since it is clear Aditil's aether was not always dead). This is huge to me. In my head, this is definitive proof that the aethers are not anywhere close to as powerful as even one shard. A vessel can be killed, and a shard splintered, but that does not completely negate the magic system as the Dhatri scenario is presenting. A shard could never be fully destroyed like this, and its quite shocking that it can happen to the aether if all of my assumptions are correct. This would indicate that the aethers are mostly physical while shards are mostly spiritual. What I mean by that is shards cannot ever be truly destroyed because they exist in the spiritual realm, where time and space are one. However, for the aether to be destroyed they must persist as a physical thing, rather than a physical manifestation of something spiritual (like god metals). Thoughts?

  11. Figured I'd start a thread for furthering input; since there is going to be a Mistborn as an antagonist come era 3, what kinds of tools would help them perform the traditional processes of a Mistborn assassin/sneak/warrior? 1. Cloth-covered coins: we see Vin use this a little in HoA, where having a little cloth covering you coins used for Steeljumping gives you greater stealth. 2. Aluminum daggers: since this is going to be a lot more common come era 3, it would prove quite useful for a Mistborn to have some upgrades to their hand-to-hand weaponry. Maybe their would even be an alloy of aluminum to make it sturdier. You could also coat the blade(s) in a dark substance to keep it from being shiny in the dark. 3. Aluminum vials/pouches: this would keep your metals safe from being Pushed or Pulled on, so no need to worry about losing them in combat. 4. Fingerless aluminum-lined gloves: now, I see a lot of potential for these; you can handle Bendalloy nuggets in your palm to ingest while keeping them safe from Allomancy, you can add aluminum covered steel knuckles for more punching force, when punching a Leecher they won't be able to Leech you, and with the finger tips exposed you have more dexterity and can Leech your own targets. 5. Ball-bearing cannon box; not really something they're going to use to often as it's big and clunky, but imagine a box with 100-300 steel ball-bearings held in place by a thin cloth. Then put the box on its side and attach it to a crossbow handle. Basically, this allows the Mistborn to use a duralumin/pewter/Steelpush to make a massively destructive grapeshot when in battle. 6. Allomantic body piercings; another source of Allomantic reserves that my be more tolerant to being Leeched or may be usable for longer periods of time. Plus, they can just be kept in the body without the need to ingest them if the Mistborn were to be attacked unexpectedly. They could also be used in an emergency as a Pushable weapon or item to break their fall if they lose their coin pouch and have no other metal. What else do you guys think would be a good tool for Mistborn?

  14. He tenses as Swordfish draws closer. He searches his memory for any information on this epic, frantically trying to remember his weakness. He's afraid, and worried that he might have to use his powers. Perhaps he'd have to sacrifice the kid. For the greater good. No! What was he thinking? He should save all the lives that he could. He breathes in deep, then touches the concrete wall of the hideout. He forms a chunk of it into a long, silver sword and a pocket of air behind it so he can take the sword out. He immediatley feels an intense hatred towards the epic. Lavoisier was much more powerful than him. Why should he get to threaten him? He calmed himself down. Save the child. That was his objective. Save the stupid, whiny, ugly little- Sparks. This was going to be hard. Regardless, he jumped out from the shadows and slipped his sword behind Swordfish's blade, blocking him from slitting the childs throat. He pushed the kid aside and fell into s swordfighting stance.

  16. I feel like he does though. All the videos and streams are clearly labeled if that's the topic and if he's going to read something spoilery he gives warning at that point in the video (or speech at the con) so you can bail out then. Not to mention all the readings and wobs do end up transcribed, either via Brandon and staff or the Arcanum. I can get feeling like there are too many streams, though people like me would absolutely prefer more. It certainly could feel overwhelming to people.

  17. guys my nose is so stuffy I had to stay home from seminary and the first two periods of school today because I felt like I was dying I almost threw up as well my mouth is so dryyyyyy ;-; also on an unrelated note I got called annoying by a freshman today and I immediately responded with "aww, thanks! i'll be sure to put your constructive criticism into use next time!" and three of my friends were with me and they all burst out laughing it was great also my friend came over after school and I gave her some of my old clothes because we wear the same size, I never wear the ones I gave her, and she only has like four full outfits it was fun we called her boyfriend (my boyfriend's twin brother (I know, it's great /gen)) and he kept messing with the filters so I kept putting candy wrapper over the camera and then at one point I made a weird face at hi and he screenshotted it so that'll be a fun talk with @Dead lol love y'all

  18. Finished A Little Hatred. Abercrombie has a tendency to fake me put thinking I won't like it, only to fall in love by the end. Also, to those of you that think like Orso, I'm so sorry, I know that's how some people really think, and my heart goes out to them. Really a great character despite that. And I have a friend that is pretty much spot on for Leo, so everyone interacting with them is very relatable. Almost done with Shadow's Edge, it's better, but still not my favorite. Definitely think I'll read the third one though. I have enough faith in Brent Weeks. Started Dune, it feels like a walking headache, but it's a very interesting book, especially the second time through with more accurate expectations.

  20. Remember that there are three "strains" of Honorspren The first created by Honor until her death. The second created by SF (among them Sylphena) until the betrayal Finally the third (only 10) created by the SF after recovering some of the betrayal trauma. These in turn took responsibility for creating more of them.

  21. Allomantic Stick: This would be a very sturdy short metal pole that has some sort of claw mechanism on the end. A Mistborn, or really anyone who can pull/push on metal, would stab this inside of a building and then activate the claw mechanism. It would keep the pole locked in the building and then the Mistborn could have a place to pull themselves to. This could be useful if you were going to fight someone in an area that you know about beforehand. You could put some of these in the area and be better prepared. They would also work in the ground to be similar to the Allomantic highways in era 1.

  25. This WoB is newer and Brandon directly said many forms are capable of reproducing. This is as straightforward as it can be. And you can also be fertile and asexual. Many reasons. You want to lower your chances of fertilization (but it still happened), you don't like being in the Mateform, you just have an opportunity now as your partner is leaving shortly and you can't wait for a storm to change forms, you didn't become a Mateform unlike your partner (it happened before Listeners started using gemstones to trap spren), or maybe something tragic happened and it wasn't consensual. Does it make sense now? The definition of "several" from Oxford Languages is "more than two but not many." Mateform and Slaveform aren't the only forms that feel sexual attraction, but this is separate from being able to reproduce. Asexuallity doesn't mean infertility, those things are separate.

  28. I think I've used this analogy before but it best sums it up: Aviars are Sprens without oaths that grant allomancy. They have an immense number of advantages over other sources of investiture: They are not restricted to a specific inheritance. They do not need to comply with a series of restrictive rules. The amount of powers they can grant seems to be equivalent to the number of bird species existing (in the entire cosmere) It is highly reusable and can be passed on to someone else with very few mishaps. This is hemalurgy, it is the drawbacks of hemalurgy, surgebinding without the drawbacks of surgebinding.

  29. I've had this discussion several places, I am posting it here. Specifically, there are two threads in the Backerkit discussion for Sanderson's current campaign. Spammers have discovered that the default settings in Backerkit will send email notifications to users when they get followed. They create bot accounts in Backerkit and follow thousands of accounts, causing those users to receive an email with a suggestive title and a suspicious website. Then, the 'followers' page for that user on Backerkit involuntarily hosts a link to that same website. There is no way to turn off these emails until you get your first follower, after which you can unsubscribe from the email or send the notifications to spam. There is no way to prevent people from following you or boot followers from your profile. The only solution is to email support at backerkit and report the user. If you're pledging secret novel 5 and this concerns you, reach out to Backerkit and let them know. If you're seriously bothered, consider depledging before the campaign completes as you won't be able to delete your account while you have a pledge project unshipped.

  30. I honestly know like nothing about you (I think I knew you like frogs based off of a SU of yours I read) haha. But you seemed similar to someone I knew. Pretty young to me is 13-15 range, but I could see you as 16. I might be way off with this estimate, I'm not sure. I figure specifically you're between 5' and 5'5. Short hair is probably like... not quite to the point where it falls to your collarbone? Like you can't put it in a ponytail kind of short. I have an image in my head and I don't know how to explain it. I will admit, I thought you'd have green or blue dyed hair. Pink / pink-orange is cool! You also do seem like a Discord kid I feel like you'd be the type to never check your pings as well, and have 1k+ pings waiting for you.

  32. I agree it is doubtful they will be reproducing in forms outside of slave and mate form, but it is a stretch to assume it is also impossible. Asexual but potentially fertile achieves virtually the same effect, but leaves the door open if Brandon wants to get creative later.

  34. Oooohhh, okay now this is a fun one. I would expect that any change in how one is perceived by, and connected to, flora and fauna as a result of tapping/storing Connection would very seriously depend on their personal Identity. What I mean is, if one were a butcher, or sociopath who kills squirrels in their spare time, or just a really nasty mean-spirited person, tapping Connection would probably drive any animals around them into a rage or cause them to flee because of the natural aversion to such a metaphysically horrible person connecting themselves into their lives. It would be like if a known serial killer walked up to you on the street and offered you a small gift and a free lunch while soaked in the blood of a new victim; you would likely not instantly become their new best good friend or have your pants charmed off. You would probably feel very powerfully connected to them in the absolute worst possible way short of having their knife in your own stomach. On the flipside though, pacifists, veterinarians, and animal trainers might probably enjoy the exact opposite benefits of such an augmentation of Connection. Would it amount to the level of being able to talk to them and be understood? No. Tapping Connection does not increase the size and complexity of the speech center of the brains of sapients around oneself, so I can't possibly imagine it would do so for sentients. Might it allow one to approach strange wild animals without their being startled or gesture to them and have them approach out of curiosity or natural affection/affinity? Totally yeah! (Think Snow White vibes) I think we're going to find that tapping Connection is far more bi-directional than has been implied on screen thus far.

  41. I don't think that WoB completely discounts this. While others may not be so diametrically opposed they are still somewhat opposed and, for grouping purposes, I still think it is a good way to start. The more I have thought about it though I would make one change to my previous groups and I have thought about some possible Commands for the remaining Dawnshards. Change would still be Ruin, Cultivation, Invention and Dominion. The opposite of that would presumably be something the lines of Preserve. Preservation, Autonomy and Virtuousity all make sense for that Command. Endowment does not seem to fit as well, but they way Biochromatic Breaths preserve one's innate investiture, allowing it to be passed on to someone else does fit. Looking at the final two groups and trying to come up with two more opposite Commands I have come up with Think and Feel. This is also where I want to make a change to the quartets. For Think, I have Honour, Valour, Wisdom/Prudence and Ambition. And for Feel this leaves Odium, Whimsy, Mercy and Devotion. The Feel group particularly captures the more emotionally based Shards.
