  3. I swore for years that I’d never be a Brandon Sanderson fan, despite having never read anything other than Steelheart, and yet… here I am. Started reading Way of Kings in a line at Disney World in summer of 2021, and now I’m hopelessly obsessed. Almost finished with Mistborn Era 3, finished Tress of the Emerald Sea, currently have one of BYU’s copies of Dragonsteel, halfway through Oathbringer, and have White Sand (Prose), Way of Kings Prime, Warbreaker, Aether of Night, and Mistborn Era 2 on deck. I also started reading Wheel of Time, just so I can read the last three. Although the first one is excellent— Robert Jordan is a great author. Unfortunately, none of my friends or family have read the books, so… I’ve got no one to discuss them with!

  7. Now, if we exclude f-Steel to prevent the thread becoming entirely about the probably long established "it takes a ton of speed to be close to automatic victory, fairly small speed factors aren't that decisive compared to other cosmere powers" vs "even small speed advantages are overwhelming" sides... Is this Era 2, so the Fullborn has guns? Shardplate is pretty good protection against bullets generally, and presumably against regular Era 1 Mistborn coins -- and a Reverse Lashing could draw them away from the Radiant. But if they have planned specifically to fight Radiants (or others with healing like Bloodmakers) they might have something with aluminum bullets to get around the Reverse Lashing. But aluminum is terrible at piercing armor. A Windrunner could try Lashing small rocks or other random objects, but f-Iron reducing weight dramatically would give a Steelpush/Ironpull an impressive amount of acceleration. They wouldn't hit often enough to burn through much f-Gold healing. In general ... unless the Fullborn has some extra-huge gun to shoot big aluminum projectiles, which seems unlikely/an unfair assumption ... I'd expect the ranged fight to be inconclusive. If both sides want to take the fight to a finish, they'll need to close to use their deadlier attacks. The Windrunner will obviously use Shardblade. Unless the Fullborn has advance warning and time to Compound up a really Invested metal weapon, they'll probably have to fight with Pewter punches (or Leeching touch) since a Shardblade would chop up other weapons*. That gives the Blade a major reach advantage so they will probably get in more hits than the Fullborn (since a live Blade can morph at will, so it won't have the clumsiness disadvantage of a RL large weapon or a dead Shardblade). So the Fullborn will probably burn through healing faster. So I'd expect a straight fight to give some advantage to the Windrunner, but it's close enough that skill etc would decide. *An aluminum sword might be an option with time to prepare, but even alloyed, it's probably not strong enough to really stand up to f-Pewter strength at high levels. Even normal weapons would have trouble. However, the Fullborn may have some tricks. - Many Radiants would likely be vulnerable to being stunned or even incapacitated by a duralumin fueled emotional Allomancy blast. Using duralumin is dangerous, since it'll turn off a-pewter until the Fullborn drinks another vial, but this could be effective depending on who the Radiant is. Tapping a ton of F-Duralumin for Connection might make this even more extreme.. it's unclear if those powers would synergize or not. - We have no idea what, if anything, F-Chromium would do in a fight. Is it atium-like, or is it more Hoid's "I know where I need to be" trick - i.e. non-combat time scale? - A-Electrum could make a huge difference, but I don't think it's fair to expect a Fullborn to be trained well enough, given that Vin's exceptional Allomantic intuition didn't let her do it. Bendalloy in combat is more for isolating a duel from a larger fight, so it probably won't help here since it's already a duel.

  9. Relatively speaking it is. People's reaction times are only fractions of a second better. Considering how much only fractions of a second make a difference, imagine how having whole relative seconds better reaction speeds would give an advantage. Running speed doesn't matter too much in a fight, it's all the other speed boosts F-Steel give that makes it so dominating That's because cheetahs are only fast sprinters, and they have terrible stamina and aren'tany faster than other big cats in any other way. Back to running speed not being the thing that makes F-Steel so broken. Watch a video of someone swinging a sword at 1/5th speed. You would have to let yourself get hit by the sword if they are swinging that slow. That's what makes F-Steel so broken as you perceive the world moving slowly as well. You're the only person moving at normal speed in a world of slow motion

  12. alr i have recently stumbled apon this and have decided that it is now the best way to rate any superpower or magic system. it goes like this: Can the power/magic system allow me to win a fight from a random guy with a shotgun? if not it fails. bad power not useful for combat. if yes, how many random guys would it be able to let me take on? post your assesments :b Edit: sorry, i wasn't aware that the word I was using was a slur spoiler for context here

  13. If the hollow point is aluminum, healing cannot push it out (non aluminum could be possibly pushed out). Frankly we don't know, but that is how it works per Brandon, as the WoB @Frustration quoted shows. Passively your weight is greater/lesser when tapping, so you break through floors, and are more difficult to move forcibly. But your punches hit no more harder or weaker. It is not strictly false, that is pretty much what the WoB says. Just quoting the relevant part. Simply put, no tapping F-Iron won't make your punches land any harder, because that is how Brandon decided the magic works. Edit: Ahh, apologies for double posting, corrected now.

  14. I could conceivably see a skilled martial hitting someone moving 2x speed. I could even believe a skilled Radiant with Stormlight reflexes and Shardplate having chances (bad chances but chances nonetheless) to hit someone going 4x speed, but a hitting Steel Feruchemist going even faster is down right unlikely. Add F-Zinc for high speed thought and A-Pewter for inhuman grace and dexterity and a Radiant would have to be ridiculously lucky to hit a Fullborn.

  15. You keep trying to dismiss how utterly broken speed is. Few if anyone agrees with you for pretty obvious reasons. I suggest you watch a sword fight video, then watch it at half speed, then at quarter speed, then at eighth speed. Eighth speed is only compressing speed three times and those sword duelists will be moving sluggishly

  20. We saw exactly only Kaladin and Dalinar catch a Shardblade. And both of them are among the greatest non-immortal fighters in Cosmere, and both are Invstested by that point. And even then, per Zahel it basically only works if the swing is directly overhead, and relatively slow. Also Dalinar at that point has budding connection to Stormfather already, so he is of 1st Oath effectively, and Kaladin was on 2nd Oath by then, so neither were a regular person. So no, regular uninvested people can't catch a Shardblade. Dodge it maybe, but even that is a stretch, regular people can't dodge regular sword strikes, much less one's far faster. Empty chromium piercing could be an option, however that leaves something Windrunner can Reverse Lash (they can affect living beings, pierced metal won't be a problem). So Windrunner would quickly rip them off. Also that requires Fullborn to have awareness of having to leech a lot for some reason, which would not be how they typically behave. Up to a point, see WoB . I would consider tapping enough brass to start melting things to be beyond that point (not to mention they would melt their own metalminds first, and lose access to their stores). Gold melts at only ~1000 Celsius, so Fullborn can never become much warmer than that. By that point Syl was already nearby though, and he was supernaturally skilled. I mean it is basically unheard of for regular person to kill Shardbearer (i.e. Kaladin is the first and last person we know has done it ever). Deadplate wearers have somewhat improved speed, probably twice as much, and improved reflexes. And yeah, Fullborn with F-steel even when just tapping at 10x rate would have enough of advantage to kill Windrunner when combined with other powers, I thought we reached that conclusion like ~5-6 pages back? Sidenote: On effects of holding Stormlight, in light of RoW: In chapter 5, Kaladin hits ground while lashed few times, and comments he hit hard enough to break bones were it not for Stormlight. Then either Stormlight improvement is not just 'perfecting' but clearly beyond human (similar to pewter), or Stormlight can heal about on par with Compounded Gold as Miles shows it. And that is still on 3rd Oath only.

  22. This is demonstratably wrong. In boxing as previously mentioned and martial arts matches, unless there is a decently large difference in weight and strength (something Compounding can more than make up for) the faster person almost always has the advantage. And that's two people who would only have a relatively small difference in speed. Even 2x faster would be well above even the difference between the fastest real life combatant and slowest.

  26. I think the speed just depends on where it starts and when it is used. There is a difference between tapping a bunch to close the gap and tapping a bunch for the melee combat. I think moving 2x faster than the radiant in close is going to be more than enough to dance around the shardblade and land your shots. You only need to play at supersonic speeds if you are trying to close a large gap quickly. Just imagine a boxing match where one guy was able to move twice as fast as his opponent... and think at normal speed for how fast he is moving... and now he can ramp up zinc as well as tap other feruchemical powers. Steel isn't just good for blitzing your opponent. It is bullet time at your fingertips. When you tap you don't just move super fast... everything else starts moving super slow. Steel is great for closing gaps. Its even better for just not getting hit. You want to nullify the shardblade advantage? Slow down your enemy and the whole world around you so much that you are Tobey Maguire fighting flash. Step under and around the radiant. Tap a ton of strength / weight / heat and flare all of your pewter (heck at this rate just duralumin burn your pewter) and plunge your hand into their shardplate and burn their soul away cooking them inside of their plate while squeezing down on their heart / spine all while flaring and burning as much chromium as you possibly can after grabbing them. You really wouldn't have to go that much quicker than 200-300% faster than normal to duck under them. Kaladin took on a shardbearer before he even knew about Syl. Shardplate and stormlight are awesome but they won't hold a candle to a pewter enhanced human with even 200% normal speed via steel.

  27. When I was very small, my family lived in a two-story duplex. Our neighbors upstairs were our best friends, and we had the BEST yard. It wasn't huge or well kept, but flowers would spring out of random places, and we had both a cherry and apple tree. I distinctly remember finding a dandelion that went up to my chest (which wasn't that tall but still) and being so happy when I blew the seeds everywhere.

  33. The Bondsmith spren are different. Stormfather was enraged by the idea of bonding with Dalinar. He didn't want to risk getting killed by broken Oaths. Whatever they had, it wasn't a effects giving Radiant bond. But blades are also larger so they are further apart. For now, I'm to lazy right now to search for more: Then invest those piercings and make them into chromiumminds. Because intent is very important, he can still burn them as regular metals (Inquisitors weren't able to figure out compounding). I doubt it would work like this, because then gold healing would replace muscle gained from tapping pewter into normal sized. And even if tapping brass would just heat up that tissue to correct temperature immediately so no burns. It just doesn't make sense for gold to replace your hot tissue with cold. There is nothing wrong with you. Oh wow. Good thing I wasn't on the Shard back then, I would add like 10 pages more

  34. That's not quite clear, for several reasons... - Elantris's place in the timeline may not be fixed until the sequels are written, it might be moved up closer to "current" time. - Sel is probably quite time dilated since there is so much Investiture (two Shards' worth) stuck in its Cognitive. So hundreds of years might pass elsewhere but only 20 on Sel. - We don't know how people like Khriss and the Seventeenth Shard (Demoux, Baon etc) prolong their lives. Is it slowed aging from Investiture (like what Breath does), or is it something more external like spending time in highly time dilated areas or having their age reset through Connection manipulation (in which case the individuals themselves might not be especially Invested)? -- Rosharan Ghostbloods might be their own thing, almost semi-rogue. Their hiring criteria might not be the same as Kelsier's; probably aren't, IMO.

  36. Dalinar is not. He didn't swear any Ideal. He only had visions from Stormfather, which aren't part of hum being a Bondsmith (SF sent them to few other people before sending them to Dalinar). Wrong. It's a known move in fight agains a Shardbearer, it has a name, it means it was used as well in history. And Dalinar was not invested. I can provide you with gifs from HEMA, like I did once before to prove my point, but dodging a sword is very possible. Dodging a Shardblade by non invested people was presented on pages, I'm sure of it. Distance is a factor. They pierce the body, they can resist it like with allomancy to some degree. It would be possible, but they won't rip it from 100 meters away. That's what I meant by ridiculous temperatures. Ignoring the killing part, he was able to dodge the blade. But text gives me the impression that he might be invested with Stormlight. Sometimes I don't know what we're talking about here so I'm just going with the flow No. Why? Their body has the same temperature, no burns would be made as there is no temperature difference.

  38. Overall: Using the "Misting" ability word is probably a mistake (more below) Also, the ability word is not standardized across all examples I'm guessing you aren't wanting SPAG feedback, so I'll skip that other than to say that your templates, capitalization and formatting need some cleaning up. Query: Are these final cardnames or placeholders? If they are final cardnames, I would recommend changing that. Pigeon-holing the various misting abilities to a single color seems off on flavor and set-deisgn. Better would be something like "House Tekiel Lurcher" (to show this is how that House trains its Lurchers - then you could riff on the ability for a different house's Lurcher in a different color - showing different aspects of each misting that way) Did you consider a "Metal Vial" version of the Blood token? You could then use that to power the abilities and that would also naturally limit how often some abilities can be used per combat/phase/turn/cycle. Lurcher: How does a Lurcher remove abilities? This should either prevent activating abilities and/or possibly be limited to non-creature artifacts. Repeatable theft (even if limited to once/turn) is a recipe for disaster (e.g. Memnarch) this should be an EoT ability - or possibly only one thing at a time (losing control of previously taken items when a new one is taken) and should probably also be non-creature. Maybe its not specific enough - something like "Gain control of target equipment until EoT. Attach that equipment to Lurcher" might be a better representation of "taking your weapon and beating you with it." Coinshot: Direct damage in White should be toward an attacking or blocking creature (even if it is very overcosted) This could easily be "XW: Deal X damage to target creature blocking or blocked by Coinshot. X can't be greater than Coinshot's power." Tineye: These abilities are underwhelming - especially for the cost. Unblockable (evading detection by "sensing blockers") might fit as well - or at higher rarities making a creature "blocked" would allow the Tineye to "sense" an attacker so that it becomes blocked ven when it would normally be unblockable (e.g. Dazzling Beauty and Choking Vines) Pewterarm: The Giant Growth seems fine, but I would probably reduce the second ability to +2/+2 for adding a keyword. Also, giving trample is traditionally green - maybe Doublestrike would fit better (also implies the speed increase - matches red's color pie better and increases the effect for the cost). Rioter: Goad is interesting here. Very nice. Haste is more "utility-meh" but not really out-of-flavor. A rare version could probably riot fear for a Maze of Ith type effect or other interesting flavor adaptations. Soother: I'm not sure about the connection between Vigilance and Soothing, but the tapping seems in-flavor. Consider Phyrexian Splicer - soothing might be a good place to "Target creature loses haste" (or trample, first strike, whatever). Smoker: Seems like Hexproof would be more on-point. Splitting the Mistings by house (or some other demarcation) would let you use both and show different uses of Smoking. Template should follow Ouphe Vandals (activated ability from a <type> source). Also, why have "opponent controls?" Is there a case where the owner wants to counter their own activated ability? Seeker: You can't reveal only one card type from an opponent's hand - you have to reveal the hand, then do something to/about a card type that was revealed. Revealing cards from an opponent's hand forcibly is not in the G Color Pie. The only examples where G can reveal card in another player's hand is a "voluntary cost" (e. g. Kahmal's Summons) Auger: This is way too powerful for a common. Also, you cannot manipulate items in a hidden zone when any card characteristics must match (compare Demonic Tutor and Enlightened tutor) - you must either reveal the cards or exile them, manipulate them, then return them to the library (e.g. Cascade, Kinship, etc.). At common, this should probably only "swap" one specific card type - but since it is a repeatable Regrowth effect (even with the Random clause) it should probably cost more (otherwise expect many infinite E-Wit loops). Did you try my links above? Those are the articles retained for the site downgrade (purge of broken promises). You can also find most old links through Way Back Machine. No, but you can find other limitations. Consider "once per Main Phase," "once per combat," "before combat," etc. as different timing restrictions, then apply them only to the abilities that need them. More to the point - not all abilities deserve this limitation, or you are sacrificing more than half of the flavor of Allomancy as a dynamic art. By placing the restriction on an Ability word you have hamstrung design from any future innovation. An Era 1 Misting =/= and Era 2 Misting. If you use "Misting" in this sense for that type of restriction you've ensured it can't be used in any other way at any future time for what is, essentially, a flavor fail. Why the Atium Symbol? Especially with as contentious as Era 1 Atium as become. Wouldn't something like the Scadrian System Iconography be more appropriate? Art is far down the list of tasks - just an artless card mock-up is necessary for planning. I'll look at the list if you want, but I was more concerned with making sure you had already considered this and have a plan. There are two primary ways to handle reprints (and usually should use both) - whether they are strict, function or SB/SW: Consider what "holes" can be filled by a reprint of some type before workin on the rest (so you know you don't, for example, necessarily need to find a W targeted removal for Limited and set balance if it was already in the reprint list - or - you do need to make one because it was not covered in the reprint list). Get to an 80% solution on the Card Skeleton, identify the missing parts, then search for any reprints that can fill the holes. Generally speaking you would want to do the first for strict reprints find things that are already on-theme/flavor for the set (such as Blazing Torch in Innistrad - which fit so well some designers were surprised to realize MaRo added it to the card file as a reprint*). Then once at 80% on the card skeleton you do another pass for possible cards to fill hoes as a functional reprint - where the card works well with the desin to that point, but the flavor can be "fixed" to better fit the set. I'm sure I missed some feedback, but I am too tired right now to finish. I'll look again later though. I'm also on Nexus, if you need to contact me there (mostly in the Commander forums - same user name). Also, I cannot find any thread for your set on Nexus, in either the Custom Card, nor Custom Set section.

  39. Turns out Time Dilation is a wildly exponential function After several failed attempts at creating a backwards compatibility equation for it, I eventually brute-forced some numbers to determine that in order to watch The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions in a moving vessel in the same amount of time as a stationary person watches The Lord of the Rings: Theatrical Editions, you would have to be moving 99.999999666% the speed of light. That is 299792457.99929 m/s. That, my friends, is nigh impossible. Adding it to my bucket list anyways.

  40. For all of y’all’s consideration: Any of the Cosmere books, but an anime. Pro 1: The characters would translate well to the anime art styles; like there would be a different art style for each series, like Mistborn would have a style similar to “Bungou Stray Dogs” while Stormlight would have a style similar to.. I dunno, “Demon Slayer” or something. Pro 2: Fight scenes would look heccn’ cool! Think of Mistborn; it’s already basically anime if you think about it: Big swords, logic-defying jumps, captivating storyline, many characters, and metal. Lots of metal. Sadly, I cannot animate and I can’t think of any anime fight scenes off the top of my head that would fit, but I have a feeling that “Attack on Titan” fight scenes give off that vibe; I’ve yet to see the anime because I am very much lazy, so maybe ask someone else. Pro 3: Our favorite characters would have hot anime art to go with it. If I could word this better, I would; but I think y’all would get the main idea. Pro 4: Sanderson wouldn’t be constrained to find live-action actors that look like the Cosmere cast as it would just be drawn and animated. Like seriously: How can authors pass up animation for that? Seems like too much of a headache to even attempt. Pro 5: The humor in the books would be funny in anime format loll. Imagine Kaladin becoming more chibi when Shallan does the boots thing; imagine the expressions and the memes that could come out of that. I not realize that this is a long shot, but eh; worth a shot anyways. Pro 6: Wouldn’t have to condense a 600+ page book into an hour an a half or more movie. I know that Sanderson plans on having a live-action show, but ya know. Pro 7 though i think this is personal taste: Everything sounds cooler in Japanese. Seriously. Go to your settings on a movie or show and switch it to Japanese; the audio won’t be synced up with the lips, but it would sounds way cooler. And the cons: Con 1: Sanderson has already said that he plans on having a live-action show for at least Stormlight Archive and probably Mistborn. I think that explains itself. Con 2: Anime does take a whole hecc of a lot of work to put into. I dunno if y’all hear what kind of labor goes on at anime studios when they are making an anime, but it certainly is a trip, and less favorable with certain studios. Animation takes a lot, and it would most likely had to be hand-drawn on a computer or something along those lines. Con 3: Anime takes a lot of money too. Though some (maybe most, idk) anime studios do not pay their animators well and focus it to other things that can depend on the studio, that’s a lot of cash going into this thing that people might not even like, which brings me to… Con 4: Not everyone likes anime. I know some people who can’t get into anime because of the art style or other assorted reasons, and the same might apply to the Sanderfans if Sanderson decides to scrap the live-action idea and do anime; might not be a worthy thing to invest in. I’m sure that there are more cons, but I can’t think of any right now. I was thinking about this because I finally have been sitting down and reading Elantris for the first time. Anyways, ima go back to that and might just disappear again lolll.

  41. Kaladin killed Shallan's brother. I think this is the biggest unresolved plot thread in the series. These are the two characters with more pages devoted to them than any other characters in the Stormlight Archive. Shallan briefly finds out about it in Oathbringer and then it immediately gets swept under the rug. Knowing Brandon, this will surely have a massive effect on the story. Shallan killed her mom in self defense and her dad was a murderous lunatic who she eventually also killed. Her other brothers had serious issues and brushed her off. But Heleran was kind to her. Heleran was the most stable and loving presence in Shallan's childhood. And Kaladin killed him. Shallan is very good at suppressing things... until she suddenly doesn't. My question is, how do you guys predict this will play out?

It's been a while since I re-read Mistborn, but I recall Kelsier's prejudices abating considerably during his months with Vin... and I don't see him as being any more hateful than Kaladin (with his "storming lighteyes") or more violent than Dalinar. I'm aware of the Thaidakar connection, and while I agree it doesn't look good, we don't really know what his goals are at this point. Nobody is the villain of their own story, right? In any case, they can BOTH deserve a punch. YES. Kelsier vs Hoid, The Rematch. I'm so in. And if you are dealing with all that stuff... well, dang. I'm in your corner. 44. As much as I like Kelsier in Mistborn, secret histories really explains that he is supremely hateful and prejudiced in all of his murders, which he takes pleasure in and calls "the fun part". He's also Thaidakar, founder of an organization of murderers who do a bunch of messed up stuff in the pursuit of self interest. And didn't Kelsier try to punch Wit first? And Wit was surprised that he was able to punch Kelsier since that's the only being he's been able to harm since the Shattering. I'm not saying Wit doesn't deserve it, he's certainly obnoxious in the pursuit of humor, but you also can't say Kelsier didn't deserve that punch and much worse
