  1. Twas closing night for our musical. We finished nicely with a heartwarming ceremony for the seniors, but right now I'm kinda just feeling sad. I spent almost 18 hours today with my friends doing musical stuff. I really don't know what I'm going to do without them. I go to a small school (about 70 kids per grade) and one nice thing about that is everybody knows each other super well―the cheering is quite spectacular. I'm going to miss it all. The music, the memories, the magic...everything. Also, my orchestra conductor is my hero. I'm really going to miss him too. I've seen him almost every day for the past 7 years and I tear up thinking about not having that. He's been there for me so much and it makes me sad to think about leaving. My core friend group is all in orchestra with me and we have one more concert. Just ONE more. I can't bear thinking about it. We've been playing together literally since first grade! It's going to be a really tearful parting. And 2 months till I leave high school behind and go on internships. THIS IS INSANE Can someone explain why growing up is so sad?? Also it's currently 1:22 AM and I'm running on about 5 hours of sleep from last night so apologies if this SU just doesn't make sense

  2. Seriously is it my third status update of the day? You guys are heroes for keeping up with the notifications Soooo Ive been, albeit very slowly, listening to the magnus archives because szeth facepalm reccomended it and their recommendations are always top tier (Tho i got terrified of it and left it for a bit in the middle there) They also happened to reccomend welcome to nightvale which honestly sounds like my kind of bizzare I just started listening to the first episode And you know what Imagine this I live on the 11th (top) floor of my building and theres a terrace here. Its currently 8pm and the only lights are the lights from the cityscape around me. there is no one else on the terrace. its completely silent. And im just leisurely taking a walk while listening to this and it starts off by talking about how nightvale is a place where they all pretend to sleep and about this weird as heck dog park thats neither for dogs nor for humans is this a good idea We'll see What im going to do is try to listen to one episode of the magnus archives and welcome to nightvale each day and that should be something. Hopefully it will be enough to help me get a bit over my horror fear as fear is no reason to not do something which genuinely interests you

  5. why do you read they ask isnt it becoming something of an obsession? they say They dont understand, can never understand, will never understand will never understand that when sometimes you dont want to be yourself. Sometimes you wanna be swept up away, you just want to forget. they dont understand when nobody ever cared, characters were there. That when nobody was there to read you bedtime stories, you learned to read them to yourself. that when nobody was there to hold you, you allowed language to put its soothing arms around you, and tangle up in your heart. oh words weren't always good, especially when they came from the mouth of others freak weirdo strange but you eventually learned to ignore those harsh words, learned to find refuge in books, learned that those same syllables that made those words so cruel, could make others so beautiful (perhaps you could be beautiful too) You ask me why i read you ask me why dont i do something more productive i say, i read to know one thing and one thing only- that i am not alone. i say, you will never understand; can understand. I say, when love's been given to you on a sliver spoon, you never have to learn what it is like to starve for it. and so you remain ignorant but that's okay

  8. Here is #44 Strains Reformed Waters carrying a blessing most divine rush upon feet of crystal through valleys and hills carved by hands long gone. The primordials that mortals once worshipped and relied upon to raise from the dust cities and empower them to wage war against their enemies have themselves gone to faraway realms of sleep. Where they are none can say, but the beauty of the rising and setting sun or the passing of the seasons is dulled so that they are very nearly void despite the icy magic that is keeping the land from crumbling into the most horrific sort of hellscape. Dregs from the very soul of this world are what remain. Tears are drenching the whole of the cosmos drowning the flora and chasing away even the mightiest of titans that would once have uprooted mountains at a whim. Haunting dirges weave a tapestry over the slowly dying world sealing a realm so lost that even the smallest spark of hope is long since snuffed out by the rising rivers expended by those who mourn. Up above despite the utter devastation a stirring of light dances in the shadows and begins to chase away the deep despair that is a shroud nay a second skin grafted into the very being of this dimension. It counters sorrowful screams with tunes first soft and comforting and then ever stronger and more invigorating than ever before. Each note lifts away agony and desolation instilling might in cowed kingdoms that now rebuild so much that has been forgotten. In the streets where rubble and whimpering existed now are the sweetest of songs that inspire and produce images of magnificence that seem too surreal to have ever been imagined by human minds. Radiant palaces, gardens, and every other manner of royal amenity become the stuff that ascends from the ruins of the old world. Aria that is above and below your musician is hidden yet their magnificence shall reign forevermore.

  9. CURSE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME Why can’t we just have fall back every year and watch as the night turns to day? It’s be cool and we’d get an extra hour of sleep one night per year. And instead of leap year every 24 years we can skip a day to account for us going back 24 hrs. Thank you for listening to my sleep deprived Ted talk.

  11. SA2½ chapter 6: My guess is that Lift will end up using her powers to heal that boy who stares into space whom she saw dropped off at the orphanage. By the way, I want to keep you updated on all my cosmere reading. I've mentioned before that I'd gotten 70% through TFE. Turns out I was wrong and it was only 50%. Either way, I'll have to reread that at some point. I'm currently 80% through Tress, reading along with @Trutharchivist's SP reading group (you all should join too!).

  12. It's been Spoiler City up on this Patreon, and that's not changing anytime soon (can you believe Secret Project #2 is less than a month away??). We are all mostly hunkered down here in 17S HQ, cooking up things both secret and not, and honestly, recovering from all the content Brandon is blasting our way with some face masks and spas. But you are not here for our morning routines, you are here to see pretty art, and this month you are in for a treat! Our patrons have known this for about a month now, but we got the exceptional Marie Seeberger, aka Lamaery, aka lamaery_in_the_cosmere to work on this piece, and we probably should've expected that we'd get way more than we asked for. Not only was her primary illustration of the Crow's Song surviving the Crimson Sea beyond amazing... ... she also threw in a bunch of variations of of it: A version without the storm clouds: A version without the Crow's Song, just the Crimson Sea after rain: A version with no Crow's Song or rain - just the Crimson Moon over a calm sea of red spores: And a version resized for desktop wallpaper use, because obviously we are all going to want that: So after all this we are absolutely going to try to get her to do something for us again in the future. But until then let's all enjoy this gorgeous painting that could've absolutely been one of the full color spreads in the book itself!

  13. I am curious to see who everybody believes is the most evil villain. Try to keep in mind that some like Marsh were forced to do evil when you make your rankings. Some of my top are: Moash That Honorspren who tries to deny Maya and convict Adolin. Hoid (It depends on the day if he is villainous Nale (Edgedancer make me question this though) Lezian Bluefingers Denth and his group Treledees to an extent Straff is despicable Aesudan, although Yelig-Nar's involvement may cloud this. Same for Amaram Anybody who denies Lift food Anyone who denies Stick whatever it's godly form desires. This is super controversial, but I have no issue with Taravangian.

  14. I've only read Mistborn Era 1, but I am heavily invested into the concept of Scadrial's gods. The Nowhere King's song from Centaurworld (which I am currently watching) inspired me to make renditions that center around AU interpretations of Ruin and Preservation. The AU uses these concepts: Ruin and Preservation being two main figures of the Steel Ministry religion. I imagine the Lord Ruler's role would be similar to Jesus, Islamic prophets, or Hindu avatars. I also imagine the gods' manipulations would be even greater. Ruin could breed serial killers and more rebellions, or Preservation could implant more explicit preparations. Mistborn's plot is more akin to epic fantasy, with the war between the gods encompassing more of Scadrial's history and cultures. There are a few more alterations. For these Lullabies, imagine Ruin as the power of entropy, inevitable decay/death, and change. He still wants to ensure the inevitable death of the Universe's things, but also wants to push people to constantly embrace uncertainty and change. The AU interpretation is just as intelligent as canon Ruin, if not more, but he "understands" emotions such as love. Preservation is more or less the same as canon. I imagine these Lullabies would be sung by people who worship them, or have been touched by their influence or magic. Ruin's Lullaby could be sung by Inquisitors like Marsh, the koloss, and kandra that AU Ruin would subtly turn insane. Preservation's Lullaby is sung by Rashek and loyal kandra. Lullaby of the Changing Tides Hush now Rest all you little ones Walk now Into the middle of glory Singing and laughter will shine Changing stars Follow the Decaying King When his bargain comes Our time is nigh Quiet. Crawl to the in-between. Silent, secretive feeling of Fearsome hatred of a soul wasting its time You will bring joy to the Decaying King When he sees the light leaving your eyes Lullaby of the Perfect Note Hush now Hold all you little ones Stand now Into the middle of beauty Despair and aging will die Painless sleep Follows the Calming King When his stasis comes Our time is abroad Quiet. Stay from the in-between. Silent, smothering feeling of Loving kindness that reaches the stars You will bring joy to the Calming King When he sees the light stay in your eyes

  15. Which easy road are you referring to? The references seem minor and if anything make the book more intriguing. I ditched TFE because the middle was dragging a little and bored me, but I intend to pick it up again after I finish SA4 (or 5 if it's out by then). Unless my life magically becomes too busy all of a sudden, I'm totally planning on doing that. SA2½ chapter 7: Ah, we finally find out what this novella is going to be about. Before this chapter it was all just seemingly random scenes of Lift running around. I hope she can defeat Darkness once and for all. It seems like perhaps Darkness is starting to catch on to the fact that Lift doesn't need Stomrlight to surgebind. I'm looking forward to Lift finding out that she can use Stormlight. (More options are always good, right?)

  18. *cracks knuckles* A'ight people. Australian stereotypes. We definitely do not all have that awful accent that people adore for some reason. There are some people with strong aussie accents, but they tend to go to the footy and stay away from us sane people. Next, yes many of us love footy, but the bulk of us just wanna chill. I personally am not a fan of footy (I watch Supercars and F1 instead lol) and do not enjoy seeing people getting concussions and losing brain cells in general. Not pleasant. Now: Bogans. I don't place myself in that category personally - a bogan is a person who walks around in thongs, always wears shorts, swears every breath, drinks beer, has barbeques for no reason, treats footy like a scudding religion and drives a ute everywhere. Most Aussies don't particularly fit the stereotype, including yours truly. And finally: Swearing. I think... this is the one idea that kind of fits most Australians. You'll walk out and a bloke with shuffle behind you and swear, or a group of guys will swear every sentence, or a few girls will swear spontaneously. It honestly depends on the person - and I'm certain it is the same in other places in the world. Personally, I don't swear. I use Sanderson cusses instead And even when I don't use those, I use other expletives like "Goodness!" "Wow!" or "heck!" I'm PG rated, peoples. *uncracks knuckles* Thanks for coming to my TED talk! 22. I'm going to be blunt, I'm very pleased that you value my opinion enough to actually ask me directly, but I don't think that it's possible to try and calculate Feruchemical potential when we don't even know the rate of loss for Feruchemy, how much Investiture can go into Metalminds of different sizes, and when we don't know the difference in the Investiture between an Allomancer burning a Metal and a Feruchemist storing (for Compounding purposes). Any conclusion involving specific numbers we come up with at the moment will almost certainly be wrong since we don't know how to properly solve the problems at this time. However, we might be able to get a general idea of Feruchemical steel's limits by looking at actual examples in the books, so starting there would be our best bet.

  24. Welcome to QF65! This game is a rerun of @Herowannabe's QF33 Deception: Murder in the Cosmere, and like that game, is very different from other SE games, so make sure to read the rules carefully. Somewhere in the Cosmere, a murder has taken place, and it's up to (most of) you to solve it before the murderer gets away. An abundance of suspicious objects have been located at the scene of the crime, and the players must identify both the "Method of Murder" as well as the "Key Evidence". Complicating things is that the Assassin and possibly some of their Co-conspirators have infiltrated your numbers, and will try their best to foil your efforts to solve the mystery. However, two things may come to your aid. The first is the Oracle, a powerful being that knows all the details of the crime, but is limited in it's ability to communicate. Additionally, one of the Investigators may also be a Witness to the killing, able to identify all of the conspirators so long as you can keep their identity hidden. The complete rules can be found in doc form here, or in the spoilers below: And here is a schedule of events (the listed day is when that cycle starts): Signups will close at 5:00PM EST on Thursday the 16th, and the game will start shortly afterwards. In addition, since this game runs rather quickly, if there is interest I will run it a second time shortly after the first round ends. If you don't think you have the bandwidth to play as the Witness/Assassin/Co-conspirator, let me know in a PM or through Discord and I'll take that into consideration when building the distribution (no promises though). @Devotary of Spontaneity will be the IM for this game. Here is a link to the spreadsheet I will be using to run the game. Player List: Quick Links: Pinch Hitters:

  25. This is a thread to discuss your happy memories! Recalling the good things that happened to you can not only help you feel better, but maybe help you lift someone else's spirits on a rough day. Here's mine: I remember that my dad and I used to play a game of chess with our Star Wars chess set every Sunday. He won all the time for a while, but then I started winning almost every game. Looking back, he was definitely letting me win on purpose, but it was wonderful to spend time playing games with my dad, and winning a game of chess every week helped me to feel more confident about myself. We also had a game of little football figures we'd play football with sometimes, and then occasionally we'd play Uno as a family. I'm not sure why we stopped. Maybe I got too old or we just got out of the habit. Anyway, that's a happy memory of mine. So, what are some of the happy memories that you humans have? Whether they be small things or large experiences, this is your place to share them.

I was actually going to be little Cosette in 2020 but then we couldn’t perform or rehearse because 2020. How can you even hear how he’s pronouncing it?????!?!?? Yup the songs are the same. The movie was based on the musical, which was based on the book. Although that’s not always guarantee.

  36. Welcome to the Shard. Nicrosilmind stores the ability to use invested arts, like Allomancy, not investiture on its own. So you can store Allomancy there and as a Mistborn drawing power from Preservation become a savant in normal amount of time, but just tapping metalmind isn't likely to make you a savant. Tapping metalminds makes you a Feruchemical savant, which is unlikely to happen for regular Feruchemist because they draw the power from themself, not external source. You can become Feruchemical savant by being a compounder or using lots of unkeyed metalminds. WoB:

  40. I have a couple of tips First of all, just so you know, it really is possible to ace the SAT (or get pretty close) if you fully commit yourself to putting the work in. Second, practice is key. Taking as many practice tests as you can (there are 10 or so on Khan Academy) really helps get you used to the kinds of questions the test asks. Pattern recognition is especially important for the reading and writing sections because the SAT uses logic there that is sometimes unfamiliar, and once you get used to it you'll understand the test better. Practicing your weaker sections (and your weaker topics) is really important because focusing there is where you can see the biggest improvement in your test score. Third, when grading your tests, LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. This is probably the most important. Say you take five practice tests, and on each of them you learn from only half of the questions you get wrong, you're going to see a huge improvement in your score already. Make the mistake on the practice test so you don't make it on the actual test. Also, sometimes you gotta remember that it's just a test, so don't let yourself get too stressed about it. You got this!

We got the cat when we ignored the DM's pointed sign to go transport cargo, and instead went and saved a random cat. This scene happened when I requested one of the rogues, Tim (we have three rogues in a group of eight people) to go scout out the cave ahead. He rolled a nat-20, and beat my passive perception of 16. So, I thought I was talking to him, but it ended up being a cat sitting on a rock. I still don't know how that happened, but it did. I may upload a sketch of my D&D character soon, but we'll see!

  44. Suppose you have two production lines for sturdy boxes. One line makes reasonably large boxes, the other line makes tiny boxes. You have a tiny box but you want a large box. So you make a Forgery to the effect that orders were mixed up and you got a large box. Should be rather simple. Your cute family pet "Fluffy", who fits snugly into the larger box climbs into it. You destroy the soulstamp. What happens now? Does it involve pet juice, remorse, traumatized children and a divorce?

  49. You can edit the title, but the BoM tag is mainly there as a courtesy to people in case they see the topic in the related threads, and for when this forum is merged back into general Mistborn but there are still stragglers who haven't read BoM. As for how tapping Investiture lets you use Metallic Arts, think about what storing Investiture must effectively do- it makes you not an Allomancer or Feruchemist temporarily, or greatly weakens your powers. Investiture is, effectively, your own capacity for magic. On top of this, the relevant Ferring would somehow also need to be storing in an Aluminiumind to make sure there's no identity locking their Nicrosilmind from others tapping it. So they have an unlocked Nicrosilmind which also stores the ability to tap the other unlocked metalmind in middle of the medallions. Boom, Feruchemy anyone can use. (The tricky thing is what's going on that anyone can tap the Nicrosilmind without being the right kind of ferring- it's possibly that's a property of Nicrosilminds in general, or that something really funky is going on there)
