  4. Hello players! Go read the rules. Copy/pasting from your GM PM, any docs you can access, and any other PM is explicitly forbidden in the rules of SE. It is even more important in a blackout format to not share the exact wording of your role. You can summarize (or even lie). But you are not allowed to use direct wording.

  7. So it was shown in TLM that allomancers can use identity-less investiture to hyperfuel their powers. Looking at it that way, a lot of the comments Brandon has made about Scadrial being low investiture start to make sense and I think I've figured it out. Allomancers, Sand Masters, and Aetherbound use physical materials to open small gateways to the spiritual realm in order to access their powers, whereas individuals like Radiants, Awakeners, Forgers, and Elantrains use investiture directly, allowing them to access it in a greater form. This puts using Stormlight and the Mists on the same level, which is why Brandon compared them so often Now I don't think that mistings getting identity free stormlight would be blasting apart buildings like Vin with Kredik Shaw, as that would require massive amounts of it, but they could definately use it to push on trace metals. This is why the ghostbloods are so intent on getting it, and why Selish, Nalthian and Rosharan magics seem so powerful compared to others. Pure investiture can elevate magic from powerful to insane.

  8. Hey y’all! I almost never post outside the SE subforum, but I came across something interesting while reading one of my Greek texts for a class. It’s from Lucian’s True Stories, or Άληθη Διηγήματα Α’. Here’s the relevant passage and my (admittedly novice) translation: The parts of interest here are Lucian’s name for these soldiers (Ἀνεμοδρόμοι), which is literally a fusion of the Greek words for Wind (άνεμος) and Runner (δρομέας, here given the nominative plural ending), as well as his description of them as light infantrymen who fly without wings. Obviously the mechanics look a bit different with Brandon, but has anyone ever asked him if he got the concept of the name for this Order from Lucian? In the absence of a WoB, could someone bring this up to him who has the chance? I find this to be a startling coincidence

  10. Okay, yeah, no. Today turned out to be a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. It’s bad because I always have a great time at school and everything, but as soon as I get home, everything falls apart. And I don’t know why. Also I have a rant about how people don’t ever listen to me, but I’m on my iPad so no point in typing that out here. *sighhhhh* ANYWAY I hope y’alls are having great dayses of your ownses :)

  11. So I found a few WoBs And together they tell a story. Sazed has been intentionally preventing full feruchemists and Mistborn from being born. Now the question becomes why, and I have two possible theories. 1. He's scared of another Lord Ruler. With both powers occuring it was incredibly unlikely, but given enough time a statistical certainty that another Fullborn would be born, and Sazed knows the problems that caused and wants to avoid them. 2. Sazed wants people to develop medallion technology, and believes that without limiting their powers they never would. Now I believe that number 1 is the much likelier option, but I felt like I'd list both.

And because I'm so stupid I feel the need to tell this to random people on the internet. Am I not amazingly intelligent? In other news, has anyone read Howl's Moving Castle, the book? As opposed to watching the movie?

  17. I think that this would be really nice to watch, and that it would help progress Adolin's character. I also think that having characters without mighty magical powers is nice to see, since we have so many Radiant characters in SA now. I was actually kind of sad when Navani got a Spren Bond to be honest, as I really liked seeing her use her intellectual abilities to overcome obsticals rather than just using Stormlight to fix the situation. Don't get me wrong, the magic powers are awesome, but having some variety is nice. With that all said though, I would make an exception for Maya and Adolin, as I would love to watch them grow into something greater together, and becoming a Radiant with a healed Spren would be well worth the trade.

  24. Have you considered an alternate version of option 2? Call it 2a (or option 3): 2a. Sazed, while remaking the world, realized through glimpses of Future-sight (like Preservation used to Batman Gambit Ati) that Metallic Art driven Fabrials would be essential to developing Scadrial. Without details (such as Medallions) he adjusted things like Snapping adn sDNA inheritnace to help start the progression to Era 4. I think the key here is that the changes likely had to be made while during the Catacendre and the large influx of power from taking up the Shards and before any internal conflict arose on using them*. So he may not have known/understood the details of MA Fabrials or the form(s) they would take - he just set into motion an environment that would eventaully lead that direction. HoA Ch 82

  25. 1. I find this extremely unlikely, as compounding fuels whatever power you are using with Preservation's Investiture, not whatever Investiture happened to be used for the power previously. So, if you compounded an absolute ton of the metal, maybe you would become more willing to not destroy stuff, similar to how... Warbreaker spoilers. 2. No. Even if compounding used Ruin's Investiture and not Preservation's, you would need to have no Vessel currently holding the Shard and you would need so much Investiture that it would be comparable to the Well of Ascension. Even then, it still likely wouldn't work, as channeling Investiture to do work doesn't seem to necessarily create a Connection between you and the Shard in question. 3. If it is possible, the Lord Ruler likely knew of it, since he gained an intimate knowledge of Allomancy and Feruchemy when he Ascended. However, I think that Returned is right. Future sight seems to be more a property of oneself being closer to the Spiritual Realm than having a "sense" that is directed in that way. I think that if you could Feruchemically store Allomantic Atium's Investiture, it would more likely be done with Nicrosil, though it seems to store the ability to use Invested powers and Innate Investiture (such as Biochromatic Breaths) more than Kinetic Investiture, which means that it probably isn't even possible to store Atium's foresight in a Metalmind.

  29. I was reading through Elantris' Ars Arcanum and reading through the list of Aons and noticed some of their meanings that had very direct correlations with specific shards. So, I decided to see if I could find corresponding aons with each shard. I failed. But, I did find some interesting connections that I figured I'd share so I don't feel I wasted half an hour. To be clear, I don't think this actually means anything, it's just something I found interesting. Devotion: There aren't any Aons that specifically mean "devotion", but there is Aon Seo which means Loyalty / Service, which is close. Dominion: There aren't any Aons that mean "dominion" or any synonyms. But, some Aons that are correlated with dominion are: Dao (stability, security), Eda (superior, lofty), and Ope (nation). Preservation: The closest Aon to preservation would probably be Aon Edo, which means Protection / Safety. Ruin: The closest Aon to ruin that I could find is Aon Sheo, which means Death and is a rather tentative connection. I also want to mention the obligatory Aon Ati namesake connection. Odium: There aren't any Aons along the lines of Odium / Hatred. There are Aons such as Teo (royal, majestic), Rii (wealth, affluence), and Eda (superior, lofty), that sort of correlate to personality traits of Odium, but they more represent aspects of Rayse's personality than the shard Odium. Cultivation: Much like Odium, there aren't any Aons meaning cultivation. But, there are many Aons representing something to do with life, such as: Dii (wood), Eto (body, flesh, muscle), Kaa (plants), Opa (flower), and Tii (green). Also, yes, I am aware that Cultivation doesn't equal life, but these were the closest connections I could find. Honour: This was actually the one that inspired this whole post as there is a perfect correlation with Aon Mai, which means Honour. Endowment: Just like Honour, Endowment has a perfect correlation. This time with Aon Eshe, which means Gift / Endowment. Autonomy: There aren't any Aons along the lines of autonomy / independence / mastery. But there are the Aons: Soi (order, organised) and Are (unity, cohesion), that are similar to traits we see Autonomy resemble. Ambition: Ambition was very difficult to find any connection for. The closest was Aon Ati (hope), but that is tentative at best. Invention: Invention was difficult because we don't really know what its Intent is, and there aren't any Aons meaning invention. The closest ones were: Sao (intelligence, learning), Shao (transform, change), and Ene (wit, cleverness) (in modern usage, Ene is used much the same as Sao). Mercy: Mercy is another one with a perfect correlation. That being Aon Ido (mercy, forgiveness). Valour: Aon Aeo means Bravery, which is close enough to valour. Whimsy: I couldn't find anything for whimsy, feel free to leave anything you find in the replies. The Survival / Wisdom / Prudence, etc... Shard: We know virtually nothing of this shard but Aon Ien (wisdom) could be a good fit. Secret Project 3 spoiler below:

  30. I don't think it was ever explicitly explained why Kaladin remained awake through the suppression. Only he, Lift and Venli do of the Radiants in the tower. Lift and Venli have Lifelight/Voidlight weirdness to explain things, but what's up with Kaladin. Ideas: Radiants are particularly attuned to one or other of their Surges, and Kaladin is to Adhesion (which isn't suppressed) Problem: Kaladin hasn't exactly been a prodigy with Adhesion, at least not obviously more so than Gravitation, or compared to other Radiants. Kaladin is especially close to the Fourth Oath, while none of the others are, and this lets him break the suppression I don't love this because there are others with Shardblades (third oath) at the tower I think, and this seems like a very fuzzy boundary. Conscious/not unconscious should be a fairly big separator Kaladin has some special Honor connection stuff going on that we can only speculate about (perhaps via Syl, as one of the original honorspren) Nothing seems particularly satisfying to me so far. Thoughts?

  31. So I was digging around in the arcanum, looking for ways to manipulate time using surgebinding because it's mentioned in WoK prime's double eye chart. You know, as you do. When I stumbled on something completely unexpected. Given what we now know about that scene some interesting things come into play. We know that Shallan had some powers left over from her original bond, and that summoning shardblades brings them back slightly. So when Radiants break their oaths their spren become something closer to Honorblades that work exclusively for them, and have to be summoned in order to grant most of their powers. This has interesting implications if Roshar figures out a way to remove Identity from the deadeyes, or potentially from themselves, as it would mean there are a lot more Honorblade type weapons out in the world.

  32. So with the reveal in the SA 5 sample chapters that Urithiru not only suppresses fused abilities, and has a ton of useful day to day functions, but makes using stormlight unbelievably efficient, or possibly replenishes it as it's used. It got me thinking. The Stormfather has the Highstorm, which provides endless Stormlight, creates crem, and is able to sustain itself forever. The Sibling has Urithiru, which makes active stormlight last forever, provides heat, water, light and pressure, and suppresses Fused abilities. And then there's the Nightwatcher, who has to fit into this somehow. And the only location I can think of, is the Valley. So, the question remains: What does the Valley do? And how is Surgebinding different inside of it. Unfortunately we lack the ability to draw any conclusions, but there is some room for speculation. If the Stormfather provides infinate stormlight, and the Sibling allows it to be used forever, it stands to reason that The Nightwatcher would make it more powerful. But anyway what affect on Surgebinding do you think that the Valley would have?

  33. I just got to that part of RoW for the second time, and I’m given to idle fancy. Adolin has a bond with Maya, both as a Shardblade and as a person. He is remembering someone who has been forgotten, as the Radiant Spren of old were forsaken by their Radiants and their identities lost to time, treated as unthinking beings, while Adolin treats Maya like a beloved companion, a sister in arms. I can envision a future where Adolin leads the rehabilitation of deadeyes. He’s the Grand Master Duelist or some other some such after RoW. Shardbearers may be wondering where they stand in a world of Radiants. Adolin can teach them how to truly bond with their blades, how to get to know the Spren behind them. Duel unworthy shardbearers and rescue the Spren. and maybe….. just maybe….. if Adolin says the Words it might heal Maya. I think he’d be overjoyed at that, moreso than if it involved him getting powers. Part of me thinks it’s good to have compelling characters who don’t have power, and Adolin fills that role well. But something like this would be beautiful.

  34. Hey folks and fellow Cosmerians! Ive started the Cosmere books within the last year, so I’m still pretty new when it comes to Sandersons stuff. However, it’s amazing how quickly someone can become your favourite author! I study English literature at University and I aim to become a high school teacher within the next year. So, whenever I get the chance to read in my spare time outside of my syllabus I pick up something from the Cosmere. My first Sanderson title was Final Empire, and damn when I put down that book I was in complete awe. I had to buy the trilogy! Since then I’ve read: First Gen- Mistborn TWoK Warbreaker (Just finished) Words of Radiance- 300 pages in. As I’ve mentioned, I’m still very early into my Cosmere adventure, but I’m loving every minute of it. It wasn’t until my later years that I started to appreciate epic high fantasy. I’ve read all of Tolkiens books and everything ASOIAF. Damn, what a lucky time to be alive. I also love the Cosmere fanbase, everyone seems so friendly, enthusiastic and passionate about the worlds that Brandon creates. I’m happy to be here!

  36. Valeria, the Grand Hotel, the Bindpoint The rest of her trial shift was uneventful, for which Valeria grateful. Arge had quickly dismissed her suspicion of Valeria's involvement after the young pair had left abruptly, and indeed, had complimented Valeria for her dedication. "Your drink serving could be steadier, but I didn't think I'd be getting any one to volunteer for vomit cleaning duties." Arge quipped. They sat together on adjacent bar stools after the establishment had shooed its last patron out, and the lights dimmed for closing. Valeria smiled nostalgically. "My life took me elsewhere, but once upon a time I did it professionally." She leaned in conspiratorially to the woman with the stained apron across her lap. "The secret is baking soda," she stage whispered with a wink. Arge laughed. "Alright Valeria, you're on. We can't pay much but the perks are nice." Arge smiled and reached behind the counter to an open bottle of Elarial estate, and deftly plucked two clean glasses with her spare hand. She poured for herself and began to fill a glass for Valeria. "Stuff costs a pretty penny, and for good reason, but it tastes like rust after being opened for more than a day, and none of the fancy fop's would be caught dead ordering from a used bottle." It was indeed like no other wine Valeria had ever tasted, and she sighed in contentment. When the night was done she was given her wage, and she wandered then to the address given to her and turned the Golden key over in her hands. The district was grand, and the building itself modern and plush. Quite a change from the splintering wooden bench she had made her recent rest stop. Something about the unexpected generosity pulled at a nagging anxiety within herself. But the nights were cold, and she needed to look her best if... When, she mentally corrected herself. When I find her. A brief exchange with the concierge gave way to well lit hallways and soft carpeted doorways. The red headed woman, Lita, had said that the suite was spare, and that in itself told Valeria much about the other woman's wealth. But not much about how she had come about possessing it. "I am very grateful to miss Lita," she began to the bellhop. His blue uniform crisp, and freshly pressed, he nodded non-committedly. "It's right this way ma'am." Valeria smiled at the fresh faced young man and thanked him for his assistance. So, she thought with a creeping nervousness, the staff are trained in disgression. Terrifying. Once the bellhop, Kevin, had been dismissed (and given a chryst for his trouble), Valeria took in her surroundings. The sound of the closing door gave way to complete and eery silence. She hugged her arms to her chest and rubbed her biceps as she wandered to open a window over the bustling street below. A hawker cried out in the distance. Much better. she thought. The days passed quickly from then. Her days were spent inquiring at various schools and orphanages, and even several guilds. More than one seedy place actually tried to convince her some poor urchin was her Squishy. As though she would not know that it was some strangers child instead. She learned of Him too, The Stranger, and of The Lonely God. Voidus was apparently known by a different name here at times, and was known for other feats too. None sounded as evil as the destruction she knew he was capable of. She spent her time traveling between establishments pondering his existence here. Finding no success, she spent her evenings working at the bar, and would wander back to the suite on weary feet, to collapse on the voluminous bed a few hours before the next dawn. It pained her, but she chose to remain at the suite for a couple of days. She had earned enough money to buy a new outfit, and food to get by, but could not waste the day with idleness. And so it was that despite her aching soles, she spent her week's end in the kitchen of the suite, baking her love's chocolate chip cookies. Trying desperately to avoid spilling too many of her mournful tears into the mixture. It was a cathartic process, sperate bowl of Vanilla frosting included, but it was the first time she had allowed herself to feel the fullness of his loss. An abrupt knock at her door brought her out of her reverie, and she took the plate of fresh baked cookies through to the coffee table on her way to answer the door. "oh!" She exclaimed cheerfully, as she wiped away a tear. "I was wondering when you would come!" @Voidus @ZincAboutIt

  38. The Valley definitely has something going on, since there was a visible fog of green Lifelight there. WOB says a Shard can have multiple Shardpools/perpendicularities, with a lot of speculation that the Purelake is a secondary one of Cultivation. The Valley could be another such place that is overly Invested. As far as practical effects, it could go a few ways: Symmetry: The Nightwatcher & Valley provide a font of Lifelight, a stationary equivalent to the storm. Spiritual: Realms are thin, things become more mutable, Soulcasting and other such realmic powers will be enhanced, and it lets the Nightwatcher more easily examine and modify Spiritwebs. 3rd Step: If the Storm brings it to the physical realm, and the Tower maintains it, perhaps the Valley will improve the Surge effect somehow. Maybe it will make Surges blend more easily (rather than needing a Bondsmith's Spiritual Adhesion), or allow for a less offensive means than traps for getting Spren in fabrials, or perhaps be a source of special/advanced Spren the way Aimia is.

  41. I'll come back to this post and edit things in as I get time to actually comprehensively lay my thoughts on these. Edit complete. We've known for a while that Brandon tends to look for linguistic inspirations in the real world. The most obvious of these is the names of the Unmade tying to various mesopotamian deities, but Roshar is rife with this. "Narak," the Listener name for the central plateau of the Shattered Plains (which is their home) literally translates to "hell" in Sanskrit/Hindi, which is very apt in a series that deals with themes of damnation and such. It's also kind of thematic, in various ways, one of which is - just as an example - that creatures that look like demons (once the listeners take up the regal stormform) and follow a god of hatred come from Narak (a.k.a hell) in Words of Radiance. Another very easy one is Amaram, where "Amar" in Sanskrit/Hindi literally translates to "undying" (in the "immortal" sense). Kaladin's whole "born unto eternity" thing could also be another one of these influences because "Kal" can mean time/tomorrowness/era depending on how you look at it, in Sanskrit/Hindi. All of this is to say that when we got the very obviously Indian-subcontinent inspired look at Aethers, in the form of Twinsoul... well. There's lots of linguistic inspiration happening too. I'll go find sources later, I gotta get up early tomorrow, but here's some thought vomit regardless. Twinsoul, codename for "Shri Sanvith Prasanva Mahik va Sila," refers to three of the twelve Primal Aethers by name. These are, Silajana (the core aether Prasanva is directly bonded to), Suna, and Vishwadhar. That's... a lot of words. I'm going to be looking at this from a Sanskrit/Hindi perspective, as those are the languages I'm personally most familiar with, though there's a million and one different dialects and languages in the general family of languages in the Indian Subcontinent. Let's start with the easiest, "Vishwadhar." "Vishwa" basically means "the world," as in, the world which we live in. "-dhar" as a suffix translates to "holder/bearer." Thus, "Vishwadhar," as a word, translates to "worldbearer," perhaps "one who bears the world" or "one who bears worlds." An alternative reading here would be to read it as Viswhadhaar, in which case you could potentially get "worldblade," but in such a way that the world is a quality of the blade itself. Another potential bastardization, "Vishwadhaara," gets us something more akin to "worldstream" or "worldchannel," in the sense of rivers and mountain streams. I personally think the first one is the most likely, even if the actual canon reading turns out to be something slightly different. "Silajana" gave me a lot of trouble, but according to @Jofwu over on the discord, Kalyani confirmed this as "origin of the stone." If so, then they break down as "Sila" (stone) and "Jana" (birth? one who births?). I had other ideas for this, but since Kalyani confirmed this, there's really no point in digging deeper. "Suna" can go so many different ways, I don't know where to start. I'll come back to this later when I have more time to think about how to write this down. I have now come back, and... yeah, this one is so vague and weird, I need more time, because it really goes many places. Then there's Twinsoul's name itself. "Shri" is an honorific, generally used when recognizing someone as being respectable in their own right "Sanvith" is weird. Acc. to Jofwu, Kalyani says this means "Son of the Mountain," but I cannot find where this is pulled from. "Prasanva" is weird. As others have pointed out down below, one of the most straightforward ways to approach this is to take the "pra" as a prefix, and then deal with the rest of the word, "sanva" as one thing. This doesn't quite work, because while there's lots of similar words I can use for inspiration, nothing fits things completely. That, unfortunately, is also the problem if you don't go the whole "pra+sanva" route, so... yeah. There's... a possibility, that the break down is somehow "Pra + san/sam + va," with elements coming together such that you get "forward mountain and" but... I dislike that immensely, because we don't have "maahikva" after, we have "maahik va". So... these are closest to what I can find: What I'm pulling from aren't exactly "Prasanva," but instead "Prasham" and "Prasaha," where the words are similar enough that I can kind of see a form of them being Prasanva. "Maahik" is generally referring to earthly qualities. Acc. to Kalyani, this means "earth," too, so I'm happy. "va," is generally used as a conjunctive "and also" sound, so you might say, "something something something v something" which ends up being meant as "something something something and something." Think of it as adding a delimiter between two items of a list, though it's more combining those two items into being taken as one group, almost. "Sila" probably refers to "stone," though "Sila" also tends to be used to refer to (virtuous) quality, with words like "sushil" translating to "having good virtue." "Raj of the Coriander Court" most likely means Twinsoul is the king, or atleast someone in the royal Coriander Court. Putting everything together, there's a possibility that Twinsoul's full name translates to "Lord Mountain-son, Conqueror of Earth and Stone, King of the Coriander Court." I'm technically on vacation right now, and I'm away from my regular workspace from where I could get you direct sources for some of this, but I will eventually edit this post and get it more organized.

  42. There is definitely something going on (I think that much is clear even without the WoBs included above), but I don't think that Sazed intentionally weakening the Metallic Arts is necessary to explain what we've seen. We don't know enough about how Feruchemy works or where it came from/how people came to possess it to draw strong conclusions yet. The dilution to Ferrings in era 2 has driven a sort of parallel to (modern) Allomancy in terms of inheritance but I don't think that that is very sound. Frustration's observation that Feruchemists didn't appear to dilute to Ferrings until era 2 is an important one; Allomancy appears to degrade through inheritance much more quickly than Feruchemy (one thousand years from ten lerasium Mistborn to assorted Mistings being the most common type of Allomancer by far). But Feruchemy bred true for full Feruchemists, even during the Lord Ruler's suppression campaign and breeding program until the Catascendre, after which we see only Ferrings in the course of just 300 years. It's true that Sazed was the last surviving full Feruchemist, which is surely a factor, but the Keepers also made a strong effort to include Tindwyl in the breeding program to propagate Feruchemy. At the time that would have meant the potential for full Feruchemists, not just Ferrings. Terris people reproducing at all must have been a difficult undertaking if all Terris boys were castrated, but full Feruchemy was still a common enough outcome to fully stock the Synod with it. And yet by era 2 Ferrings are as powerful as Feruchemists get, ever, despite a distinct Terris population that has grown fairly large. It's a discontinuity that can't be ignored. As for the dangers of Feruchemists mixing with the broader population, that statement strikes me as too broad to be worth a whole lot. Dangerous for whom, and to what degree, and in what ways? My current best guess is that we're talking about the (still undefined) dangers of compounding, largely based around the fact that Hemalurgy apparently no longer allows for it for unknown reasons. But I've also started to think that limiting the availability of Feruchemical powers also makes it harder to find and practice with the Cosmere-shaking powers (alone and together) we've seen hinted at: manipulating Investiture, Identity, and especially Fortune. Those are powers that can mess with Shardic plans pretty directly, particularly Fortune. And if they're rare, and knowledge of Hemalurgy is getting out, I think that increases the incentive to steal and hoard them. We know that that approach really does fundamentally weaken the powers, no divine intervention required.

  47. I feel this is definitely a decent part as to why they want Stormlight. But there is more to it than that. They don't just want to have unlimited amounts of Pure Investiture for themselves to use, they also want to monopolize it. Control it's off-world flow. Use it to gain influence over other worldhopping groups. The mass production and distribution of Pure Investiture will change the Cosmere forever and whoever figures it out first will have the ability to influence that change to their liking.

  49. Kaladin isn't well-practiced at Adhesion as a Physical Surge, but his natural abilities as a leader certainly suggest an affinity for Spiritual Adhesion/Connection. Definitely not like a Bondsmith, but it certainly seems that he's somewhat unique in that regard. - the Heavenly Ones, for instance, are completely fascinated with his accomplishments. And, given the praise directed toward Kaladin and Navani, I don't get the impression that the Fused have particularly high opinion of most mortals. And we know he's been close to the 4th Ideal for awhile (all the swirling Windspren and whatnot). I don't think the Sibling means that anyone at the 3rd Ideal can resist the Tower's suppression. They mean that someone really near saying the 4th Ideal could. And that may be unique to Windrunners because only one of their Surges is suppressed (which is why the Windrunners, in general, were less sedated than the other Orders).
