  1. December Song Recommendations: It's December! I'm gonna post some songs I feel fit the month. Context: I feel like December is a month to be spent with friends and loved ones, regardless of what certain holidays go on in the month. While there are many, they all culminate, I feel, in a general sense of togetherness that emanates from the month. As such, most of these songs deal with some form of togetherness, be it platonic, romantic, or other. So, here's some song recommendations: Format: Title - Artist Will You Grow Old With Me - Built By Titan Astronomy - Conan Gray Mr. Rose - Spence Hood (This song is absolutely beautiful) Hypothetically - John Michael Howell I like where this is headed - Scrawny is your bedroom ceiling bored? (feat. Cavetown) - Sody, Cavetown Falling Up - A Million In Vermillion putting a spin on adore you - Egg Milestone - Matt Walden Yellow Rose - Matt Walden I Want To Be With You - chloe moriondo Mostly - Vian Izak doing ok. - Pablo David Laucerica Hope you enjoy all the songs, and Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Happy December!

  3. So I don't know if this is even a theory, as it doesn't really have consequences that might be proven right or wrong, but rather an interpretation that I really like of the Diagram storyline as presented. Matter of fact, I was wondering how many people defaulted to this interpetation, and I was just slow not getting it right away, or if there's anything in the text that counters it. We are told the Diagram is difficult to interpet because Taravangian was so smart on that faithful day that he had to trascend "linear note taking" and instead had to bunch information together in what became the Diagram. What I think makes more sense, is instead that Taravangian's plan was to become Odium since that day, the diagram had to be so complex to hide his endgame from both other people and dumb Taravangian himself. He needed to create the cult related to the Diagram to reach his goal, but its full understading was unattainable for them by design, if super smart Taravangian had wanted the Diagram to be understandable, he would have made it so, but hiding the endgame is vital for the plan itself to work.

  5. Here’s what I think happens: Sazed morphs from Harmony into Discord. This allows him to be destructive sometimes and preserving other times. He is holding out on this change until he absolutely has to for the upcoming cosmere-wide war. He will then be able to ruin/destroy odium and autonomy’s forces, while preserving the Scadrians. He will be Discord and they will love him for it. Meanwhile, Kelsier will plan ahead and get hold of a trellium spike to help protect/separate himself from Sazed’s power and influence in the future. After they defeat odium/autonomy, Sazed will continue to be discord and will swing back and forth between destroying and preserving… not the best thing to have outside of a period of war. Kelsier and friends are going to have to fight against Sazed in order to protect the Scadrial and the cosmere at large. Kelsier will also get some lerasium and gain allomantic abilities. I’d bet money that he eventually gets his hands on a dawnshard and that’s how he ultimately stops Sazed. Thoughts?

  7. But wouldn't that mean that his Ruin and Preservation sides are working together in harmony towards the same ultimate goal? I like the idea of fitting the Terris prophecy with the war against Odium and Autonomy. I don't think one spike wouldn't give Harmony that much influence over Kelsier and getting a trellium spike would probably be even worse, because that would open him up to the influence of Autonomy who is the enemy they are fighting against. My theory is that after the war Sazed will pick up either Odium or Autonomy(probably Autonomy, because that would fit better with his intent) and that would balance out Ruin and Preservation solving the problem of Discord.

  8. Marie, the Bindpoint The kandra shed the act like water, despite what they said. Still polite, as they had been before, but they dropped the scraping. At least she knew where she stood now; oddly, that made her relax just a bit. She knew how to talk to a kandra. They knew what she was. Even if they were truly surprised to encounter her here, they would understand how she worked in a fight, would likely be in contact with Harmony themself. In knowing her, they became less of an unknown. She shifted her stance to entirely face the other, approaching kandra. The first one, 'Valiert', was still in her view, and she did not let go of the coin. She burned another short burst of bronze; definitely those Blessing spikes kandra had from the one, but she couldn't tell which power. Surprisingly, the other seemed...not to have a Blessing? She could see the spikes easily, though. Well. Marie set it aside for later. "And you, do you claim not to have come for me too?" she asked them sharply. "I made a deal. You can ask yourself, I'm sure, to confirm. Or why else are you here?" Her head still turned to the other kandra, she spoke to Valiert. "If you like." They were drawing more attention now. Probably should avoid that whenever possible, with her new goals. She didn't have to consider where to go. "I don't know anywhere; lead the way." If there was an ambush, there would be an ambush regardless. If they wanted to stop her badly enough, it wouldn't matter where she went in this city. Better to watch where they thought to go. Marie thought, for a heartbeat, of asking Harmony herself what was going on and seeing if he had sent them after all. But...not yet. She just - wouldn't, yet. @Voidus @Ookla the Nerdy

  9. Hamartano heard a faint buzzing in his earpiece. It was the first signal he had from it for days, after the attack on the comms device. He turned the knob, hearing the whining noise of static—then, through the haze of noise, a voice calling clearly. He paused. A frequency he wasn’t used to, yet unmistakably transmitting something. “Hamartano, over.” There was a second’s pause. “It’s time. Over.” Elation sprang up in Hamartano’s chest. “Copy!” he yelled, his exhilaration carrying his voice over the loud revving of his bike’s engine. He tore the earpiece out and shoved it in his jacket. The bike tore away out of the desert sands, the bolts of the now-armed gizka falling harmlessly past him. Hamartano was brooking no delay. The bike rattled as he pushed the accelerator as far down as it could go, and only when the engine started cutting and choking did he reduce its speed. He was still tearing up ground, though, and jumped off his still-speeding bike as it came in front of the now-familiar bar. Sahje looked aghast at the unmanned vehicle; at least, he did until its retreating form trampled a row of ten gizka as it screeched to a standing halt, gleaming in the sun. The gizka stood up, disoriented and disarmed but very much not dead. Humtumb the gizka man ran forward to grab them up, and Hamartano shook his head slightly. Well, he could occupy himself with what he pleased. More important matters were ahead. He strode in. Glares greeted his arrival. Apparently, doing in the shifty local ecologist hadn’t done wonders for his reputation. He briefly considered whether the homicide could also be classified as a breach of the Codes, then swept the errant thought aside as he mounted the tallest stool and pulled out his blaster, pointing it squarely at Smarts, the technician. Hands scrambled for weapons elsewhere in the seats, but Hamartano was ahead of them. He flipped the catch above the trigger, and the length of the blaster shrank, contracting into itself. The trigger folded in, becoming a simple button lever, which the swoop gangster pulled with a flick of his thumb, sending out a blinding blue rod of light. The two shots which had been fired at him were deflected into the roof and the ground below him. Hamartano was not interested in further casualties. Yet. Lightsaber in hand, he addressed the group. “I am on the Jedi Council,” he proclaimed. “And we have decided it is time to show ourselves to you once more.” He pointed at Nees Bac, who he acknowledged with a smile, the first Hamartano had cracked in ages. It was good to drop the false animosity. “The Jawa man has been my helper here. A little short, but the Council thought he’d do alright. And he has. Saved that one—” he now jabbed his finger at Turtle—“from some Sith a couple days ago. He’s been the one actively fighting them, you know. Had the nerve to put me on reconnaissance, saying the Force would guide him to his needed targets. I guess it has. Me, I just rely on Old Faithful here.” He patted his lightsaber hilt. “That said, the both of us have been doing some watching and messing around with the Force, and we’ve got news. “GIZKA MAN!” he hollered, and Humtumb stumbled in. A thumb flew in his direction. “Gizka man is not one of those Desaan types we’re supposed to be hunting. Neither is the midget”— he pointed directly at Moff—“or the quieter guy there”—his finger alighted on Kalabel. “And unless the Sith have gone even more Force-mad, it ain’t Turtle either. Doesn’t stop ‘em from being in league with the unsavoury types, but it does leave us with only a few people to check.” He retracted his blade and jumped down. “Jev. Smarts. Lib. KD. One of ’em wants me and Nees dead. Reckon it’s Smarts, from my sense of the guy, but it’s never too soon to be exploring other people too. I ain’t never felt good about Lib, and KD has been tailing Smarts too much for my liking anyway. One of ‘em wants to try me, they can come at me. I’ll be ready with this guy.” He flourished the lightsaber and ignited it once more, twirling outside and sending four blasts deflected into the hearts of the gizka jumping up and down near the entrance. “But till then y’all gotta make some choices.” In case my RP was not clear: @Alvron and I are the Jedi. I, like Anakin before me, am not particularly good at this Alv has been better, and submitted the Force Sense that saved Turtle C2. (I’ll let you guess how he chose a target ) We both agreed on Hael C3 and managed to get a Sith even though I’ve been doing much more terribly in-thread with my analysis. And sorry about that show we put on yesterday. It was kinda necessary to make sure we were both under enough lynch pressure to not get hit till our Force Senses recharged. We will be protecting each other this cycle, so Elims don’t even try to hit us (or do ), and we also have a “cleared” list. These are people who for whatever reason could not be Desaan Reborn. Note: they can still be cultists!! These are mechanical clears based on our action results. This group is @DrakeMarshall, @Madagascar, @Ashbringer. Turtle is also clear by virtue of his being attacked C2. This leaves Matrim, Fadran, Wizard, and JNV as options for the last Desaan Reborn, with weaker suspicion on JNV than the other three due to activity patterns and tone. Please make something of all this information, because I have not been able to and also stop trying to kill me >>

  10. K imma just annoy y'all for a li'l bit 'cause I'm in Bio and I'm meant to be doing work but we're almost at the holidays and I can't be bothered - Wow. That is one of the least coherent sentences I have ever written. Anyhow, I borrowed the entirety of the Stormlight Archives from the library. It feels so good. I've finished re-reading The Way of Kings and storms... I forgot how much of a masterpiece that book is. I'm practically done re-reading Words of Radiance pt 1. Not as good as TWOK, but I mean... who can beat it? Super excited, because I've been waiting for my library to get part 2 WoR in for... a month? Two months? Anyway, it finally came in, and now I've got a nice fresh book SO EXCITED!!! I bought the Tor Fantasy printing of SA 1-3, but I wanted to read them all in the Gollancz version... because consistency. So now I have a beautiful, gorgeous stack of books (WoR, Oathbringer, RoW) on my bedside table, just waiting to be read over two months of summer holidays. I never go outside in summer... so perfect! (NGL summer in Australia is instant death. 40 degree days [Celsius, in case you were wondering] murder me instantly. I am literally a ghost that plays the flute) Have I ever mentioned that I want to learn how to play sea chanties on my piccolo? Yes, yes. Imagine this teenage girl striding down the street, playing a tiny black piccolo and having the time of her life. Yes. That would be me some day. My elder brother is thinking of getting a busking license so he can go play guitar in the city. He plays fingerstyle, and man he's good! Raoden (imma call him Raoden for now, 'cause he's got sarcastic Raoden vibes) can play both electric and acoustic and is masterful on both of them. I would attach a file of his song Glimmer, but I do not have one (sorry!). Oh! I just noticed! 300th post, and I'm just over a month old on the Shard. Do I have problems? *confused Telrao noises* Thanks for listening to my TED talk! - Ookla the Floofy (Telrao!)

  11. Met one of my former students by chance last week, on my birthday. She thanked me for getting her to an A- and said I was one of the best TAs she had, probably because I really focused on trying to get my undergrads to do well in the exams. My teaching philosophy...isn't really the best, but I generally aim to help as many students pass as I can, because the module I teach, students largely don't take it out of passion, they take it to fulfill requirements so I don't see my job as being the 'cool' or 'fun' guy even though we do have fun/funny classes. I spend a lot of time drilling them in concepts and clearing up areas where students usually get confused, so they'll get good grades on the final exams. I think she underestimates how much work she put to get that A-, but I'm glad she remembers me, and that she has a positive memory of the class I did my job well. Peace

  12. At the end of Warbreaker, there is a moment when the God King starts awakening objects, using the ability granted to him by the 6th heightening to instinctively awaken objects. The whole palace turns white and the Pahn Kahl people think it is an earthquake. Bluefingers goes back to killing Siri, looking away, when the cloths burst into the room. The God King says, "You will stop!" and the text says Bluefingers looks up, seeming dumbfounded. How possible is it that this is some sort of command that the God king is instinctively using to stop Bluefingers?

  13. So we have seen that burning lerasium connects the user to preservation and provides mistborn abilities. A spike of trellium allowed Wax to communicate directly with Autonomy's current avatar on Scadrial presumably through a form of connection. (side note: this sort of thing might be used for long range communication at some point) My theory is that burning a god metal will provide a permanent connection to the relevant shard although how this manifests will likely vary. Atium so far seems not to follow this rule however I believe it has been confirmed that era 1 atium is not pure ruin investiture but an alloy which could be why this does not occur.

  18. Byron gave a slight jump at the door slamming in the distance, but something told him that wouldn't be the biggest danger in the house. Then someone mentioned cadmium. "Uh..." was all he got out before the other person - Malsam? - answered. That she was used Allomantic cadmium too. Byron wasn't sure if he'd ever met another Pulser. It made sense, seeing how he'd lived for so long on Roshar. But it was still... odd. Might as well share. "I'm a Pulser too. I've used cadmium for... a long time. I can carry the bubble with me and slow down time and do a few other things. Other than that... I can think pretty fast, and I'm good with knives." He didn't mention he was a decent pickpocket - it seemed like it was the main idea, and the guardsman seemed to not like the idea of sticky fingers. Felt a bit strange, seeing as they were desperate to leave the house and everything else inside, but maybe there were multiple teams for multiple items.. That wasn't the most outlandish idea. "If you need someone to scout ahead, I'd be alright at that. It just won't be very fast." Byron paused for a second. "Also, if we have a deadline or are counting on the house changing at a consistent time... I might mess with that. Or your watches. Or anything made of aluminum at all."

  20. I think that the idea that Harmony is balance is an unfounded assumption. Sazed, post-ascension, holds two Shards which are balanced against each other due to their opposed natures-- it's holding Ruin and Preservation at once that forces balance. I don't think that that will change as long as those two Shards are held together without any other. Harmony is Sazed's Intent for those balanced forces: he wants them to to exist in tranquility. So Discord should also be constrained by balance because it has the same components which inherently require it, but the Intent won't be tranquil coexistence. What I think will be different about Discord is that instead of balance enforced largely by restraint or inaction (even when Sazed wants a specific outcome), the balance will be enforced by more activity which cancels itself out but which also heightens instability. I don't think that Sazed will have quite the same scope to prefer an outcome and position agents to pursue it but will instead maneuver people (who might, in the past, have been agents of Preservation, Ruin, or Harmony) with goals into positions where they will be forced to contend against each other. He'll end up promoting instability for its own sake, and the outcome will be determined by whoever is able to deal with that. Direct action will still be balanced, not by restraint and inaction, but by Preserving some groups and Ruining others so that there is always maximum friction between people and groups of consequence. I think that we're already seeing a lot of this, and that it's related. Harmony hasn't suddenly become Discord but has been sliding that way for a long time. We've gone from an idyllic people too content to progress (the Elendel Basin) to multiple political groups constantly at each others' throats and essentially refusing to work together (Elendel vs. the Roughs, all vs. Southern Scadrial), for example. I think we'll also see changes from certain "sides" getting help (Harmony sends Wax to save everyone, and sends nothing to the Set) to sending help to all sides (Wax is dispatched for side A and not-Wax is deployed for side B, both sent by Discord). The defining characteristic won't be capability, as Autonomy favors, or arbitrary conflict, as Odium favors, but will instead be fractiousness and disinterest (or inability) in working with others. Under Discord we'll see more factions bitterly opposed to other factions, more coups, more defectors and double-agents, and more of anything that opposes stability, cooperation, or peace.

  22. That's true, I guess it would depend on how much Sazed has control over what is preserved and what is ruined. But giving them different goals would make sense... maybe his preservation half is trying to save lives and stop change/conflict, while the ruin side is trying to destroy the whole Cosmere? Sazed could guide the Ruin side towards fighting against the main enemy forces since they are in the way, but then it would be a serious issue after he wins. Fair, and it wouldn't make sense for him to get more hemelurgic spikes as we learn that hemelurgy has been largely ineffective for Kelsier so far. I guess his only hope is to get a dawnshard haha Oooh I like this... I feel like those are mergeable. Does Sazed then slowly but ultimately gain all of the other shards at the end of the Cosmere story line? and become Adonalsium / the true hero of ages??? Or maybe he gives it up to Hoid at the end? I don't know, totally spitballing. Crazy talk.

  24. They are actually comparable. Terminal velocity is approximately 176 ft/s. The carriage ride between cities took an hour and a carriage usually averaged out at 20 mi/hr. The spikeway reduced that time to 10 minutes. 20 miles x 5280 ft = 105600 ft. 105600 ÷ 10 = 10560 ft/min. 10560 ÷ 60 = 176 ft/s

  27. So I am a huge Wayne fan. I know he comes across as comedic relief similar to Lift and Lopen which may be annoying to some but I have always liked him. He is the "Sad Clown". I thought his arc in this was masterfully done. I cannot say I was completely surprised by his sacrifice but just the way it was all handled was amazing. His conversation with Wayne before storming the tower actually brought tears to my eyes. I liked the arcs for all of the rest of the main characters as well. Hoping we get to see some of the future implications in Era 3 of these characters growth and contributions especially Marasi. Although I think I would have liked to see it in a different book like maybe MB Secret History 2 because it did feel a little wedged in I really liked all the Ghostbloood stuff. It completely changed my opinion of Kelsier. I loved seeing Shai again and the advancements in Forgery. It was awesome to see Aethers on screen and I really Liked TwinSoul as a character.

  28. We just heard in a new WOB that the man named “16” who was in Lasting Integrity was from Scadrial. So now people are thinking 16 might be Spook. I think this is also connected to the wob that Brandon thought he had confirmed a sliver character in RoW. So to me, I think Spook became a Sliver and is hiding in Lasting Integrity.

  29. I sort of assumed from that that the battle wouldn't be a literal duel, but instead a fight for the, "hearts of men". Where Dalinar and Rayse (now Taravangian) try to convince each other and also each other's forces to switch sides. After all, both options of the deal lock Odium to Roshar, but allow the Fused and Radiants to do as they please. I think that under this format, Dalinar would be the best choice because of his ability to summon visions. <spoilers for WoT> If you want loopholes: the contract doesn't have provisions for what to do during the contest of champions, meaning that if Taravodium can find some way of prolonging it (perhaps indefinitely) he might gain more agency. There's also the fact that Cultivation things that Taravodium may be on her side -- perhaps allowing him to act directly against Dalinar (who would stand no chance against the full might of a shard). So he just elects himself as champion and wins.

  33. So Kelsier name-dropped a new place (planet?) in the Lost Metal in his epilogue: Mythos. It's pure speculation at this point as we don't have much but wanted to make a space for theories here. So what we can establish about Mythos from this very short exchange: 1. Not Moonlight’s world (we know this anyway because we know Moonlight’s world so this just confirms Mythos is not some other nickname for it) 2. Not aether planet 3. Implied it may be reached by Shadesmar (Sazed's reply is about using Shadesmar to reach out) 4. Potential allies there, presumably with some sort of power/Investiture. But Kelsier seemed to suggest it off hand as if it would be more of a stretch than Moonlight’s world or aether land. Unclear if this is due to it being a harder place to reach or that inhabitants might be more hostile or less willing allies. So what do you think/want it to be? My current take: simply because of the name, I would love this to be Valor's planet. Mythos just sounds like a place full of badass Spartan warriors or something like 300. Or combo of Spartans and Vikings. A land of mythical warriors could definitely be powerful allies and I also could see that if "Valor" is what is revered there they may only ally themselves with you under certain circumstances or could be risky (don't tick them off and make them your enemy).

  35. Mistborn: Secret History definitely has spoilers for Era 2 and the author recommends waiting until after Bands of Mourning to read it. Another factor is how much (if any) other Cosmere books/series has the individual read? If Mistborn is their first (or nearly first) work by Sanderson or in the Cosmere, then the ton of Cosmere references and information (Shadesmar, Ire, Connection, etc.) will not make much sense and will have far less impact than it should. For all of my friends that I have recommended Sanderson (and Cosmere) I have never recommended they read MSH after HoA. I just warn them that they could do so, but it is not recommend as it spoils things down the road and will make less sense unless they have read, at least, Warbreaker and Elantris after HoA and before Alloy of Law. I usually only recommend reading it with Era 1 during a re-read of the whole Era 1. Integrated Timeline: I also created a reading order for integrating the chapters/scenes of MSH with Era 1 (advised only for re-reads of all 5 works) and I also edited my epub so I have an integrated ebook for Era 1.

  37. Pretty sure in Kelsier's POV he was dreaming about being able to be able to steelpush and fly through the mists again and have the powers that he used to but no longer can. And it gave the impression (to me at least) that it had been like that ever since he died. Also, he talks to Sazed about trying to get Lerasium and is told that it won't work for him (which I think is a lie). I'll give you that it does more than just pin his body - it also gives him some steelsight. But he clearly can't actually push on it. Check out the spoiler stream in the link below - this question is answered at 1:22:00 And in Kelsier's discussion with Sazed, we get the following from his POV after he says that he wants to democratize the powers, take it from the few and give it to the many. (I pulled it from the audiobook so not sure what page its on)

  39. Laurelai, Mistkeep Laurelai gave a pleased smile to the praise before following Lita's line of sight. The inviting sound of music called from within the church, enough for Laurelai to already begin relaxing. She had hoped that the entire day could have been sent recovering from the stress of a week in Records, and yet here she was just as tense as she had been yesterday. Giving a rueful shake of the head she looked the building over, gaze lingering on the stained glass windows, illuminated from within. "Mmm, looks quite lovely." She commented, not having been herself but quickly drawn to the ambiance. "And I'm never opposed to a little blasphemy. Especially not when it's attached to lovely conversation and something fine to drink." Following Lita's lead, Laurelai breathed a sigh of relief as they were enveloped by a wall of warmth and sound. The streets outside had not been kind to her decision regarding boldness today, almost enough to make her regret her choice. The number of stares she received upon entering into the building however, immediately satisfied her that she had chosen well. Giving a practiced and pleased smile around the room, she turned back to Lita just quickly enough to avoid prompting anyone's approach. "Drinks first or dancing do you think?" She asked, voice raised a little to be heard over the music. "Or would you prefer to avoid that given your recent... piercing." Mmm, yes those lingering glances were most satisfying. It was always a nice feeling to have chosen the right outfit for the occasion, especially when pairing it with the right smile for maximum effect. Laurelai, Alleycity 18 years ago There were only two options, but Laurelai agonized between the white and the blue dresses. They were the only two she owned that could really be called nice, one, a simple Scadrian white was supplied by the orphanage to wear when they were taken out, the other had been a gift for her from the Lamirir's when they'd... "Al-ethi" She said, shaking her head to dismiss the upsetting thought and repeating the words they'd used to describe it. She always seemed to have more trouble than other children with pronounciation but two years of practice had mostly helped. She could be understood now at least. "Ha-vah" She wondered which would be the best to choose, a pit of nervous worry was already forming in her stomach at the thought of the meeting that was to take place this afternoon. She could make no mistakes, she was already so lucky that someone was even meeting with her to consider taking her in. "Blue." She decided eventually, practicing the word and pulling the dress from her small cot. "Hello. My name is Laurlai. Laurelai. Laurelai Esserethel. I am wearing a blue havah." Practicing further as she changed, she wondered what these new people, the Vennit's would think. What would they look for in a child? They would want her to smile, she had learned that quickly enough. People were unnerved by children who just silently stared or cried in a corner. The Lamirir's had told her she had a wonderful smile when they first met her. She practiced, wishing that she had a mirror to see in. Quickly enough however she had to give up on smiling practice to focus on her buttons. They were so difficult, and she still wasn't sure why it was so important for her to button over one hand but not the other. It was much easier to put this dress on when someone could help her. Sometimes one of the adults would do that if they had time. Once the children had helped her, though they avoided her now. VeeVee would help me. She thought, recalling her friend from before the Lamirir's. She always helped me with buttons and words. She smiled in fond recollection, before remembering what had happened to her first and only friend with a sudden shiver. Her smile was lost instantly, tears springing to her eyes and only just managing to be held back. "No no no." She whispered to herself. "Happy happy. Smiling. Hello, my name is Laurelai. I am wearing blue. Hello Mister Vennit, hello Misses Vennit. It is nice to meet you." The smile was gone, with no way to retrieve it. She hadn't practiced enough, hadn't worked hard enough. Why had she thought about VeeVee like that? It was only going to upset her after all, best not to think about things like that. Not VeeVee, not the smell of rose-scented soaps, not fires and not the Lamirir's. But then what was there? What could she think about without getting upset? A soft, warm sensation spread across her scalp. A feeling of loving fingers tracing something into her hairline. She smiled at the feeling, her tears quickly drying and the tension and worry that had begun to consume her mind disappearing as it washed through her. It felt comforting, and caring, and affectionate. It felt like everything that Laurelai wanted. It felt like love. "Hello Mister Vennit, hello Missus Vennit." Laurelai said sometime later, smiling happily at the couple. "My name is Laurelai." "Oh isn't she darling?" Said missus Vennit, returning the smile as she crouched next to Laurelai. "What a lovely dress Laurelai, very fitting for such a lovely girl." "It is my blue havah." Laurelai said proudly, turning to better display the fabric and smiling even wider. She hoped that she'd chosen the right dress, the right smile.

  41. I had this topic a while back: "Battle of champions. (I spent way too much time thinking about this topic, and here is the result)" This pretty much sums up my thoughts about a loophole: The weird thing about the setup of this battle is how relatively low the stakes are. No matter the outcome, Dalinar has already won. (Even Wit said that to Odium). The stakes basically are Alethkar, Herdas, and Dalinar’s soul. For us, the audience, the stakes are whether one of the heroes that we care about can die. When Taravangian took the shard, the stakes for Odium became even lower. His goal was always to save Roshar and now he basically has the power to end this war. For him, the outcome of this fight is even more meaningless than for Raise. The second weird thing is Taravangian-Odium thought about Raise being maneuvered into this deal: “The way to win was to make sure that, no matter the outcome, you were satisfied. Odium should never have entered a deal he could not absolutely control”. And literally the next sentence: “It can still be done”. And something about subtle possibilities. Both outcomes of the fight are unsatisfying for him. I think Taravangian really wants the same thing the Raise did: to be free of Honors restrictions. This is the outcome that he is looking for. Chapter Terms has this interesting bit: “What happens, Odium, if you break your word.” “Then the contract is void, and I am in your power. Same, but reversed, if you break the contract. You would be in my power, and the restrictions Honor placed upon me—chaining me to the Rosharan system and preventing me from using my powers on most individuals—would be void. But that is not going to happen, and I am not going to break my word. Because if I did, it would create a hole in my soul—which would let Cultivation kill me. I think this is the loophole that Odium will try to exploit. I see three possibilities here: 1) Dalinar refuses to become Fused (a very boring possibility) 2) Dalinar refuses to kill his opponent (child, Gavilar, etc). Terms are strict about the killing part. 3) Dalinar is not a champion but intervenes in the fight. The third option is the one I want to speculate on the most. Who will be Dalinar’s champion if not himself? I am leaning toward Adolin and Kaladin. Kaladin is Kaladin. He doesn’t need explanations. As for Adolin. Well, he is the best duelist. And from the narrative perspective, Adolin being chosen by Dalinar as his champion will be a very satisfying conclusion to their conflict: Adolin sees himself as not able to meet his father’s high standards. Dalinar choosing Adolin for the most important battle of this generation will be a powerful signal from his father that he sees him as a kinda cool son. But my bet will be on the fight between Adolin and Kaladin. Kaladin is Dalinar’s champion, and Adolin is Odium’s champion. That will explain why Dalinar is not fighting (not wanting to fight his own son). And this pair will allow for the same result: Dalinar will intervene if Kaladin will be on the verge of killing Adolin and vice versa. Why the hell Adolin will fight for Odium? It would have been a tough pill to swallow If Odium was Raise. Raise was the bad guy with bad intentions. But Taravangian can persuade Adolin that his father is the wrong party to support. And he can exploit the current shaky relationship between Adolin and Dalinar. The Evi part is painful and easy to use.

  42. Right now we don't really have a definite name for that language, because there were almost no other languages(with the exception of terris) actively spoken in the original trilogy. We could call it after the people who lived there, the skaa and nobles, but since it was spoken by both, it would be wrong to call it after either race. I think for now we should just call it Scadrian until we get an appropriate WoB for this question. If the scadrian Ghostbloods would have called Kelsier by some title we haven't heard that would have clued us in, but they seemed to be close enough with him that they just called him Kell. The title "Thaidakar", might just be what the rosharan Ghostbloods call him and the scadrians just see him so frequently that they just do not see the need to call him by some title.

  43. Smarts snorted. “I could help with that.” He considered the comms unit. Though it wasn’t a droid, which was Smarts’ area of expertise, he could understand how it worked and what it would take to fix it. The mechanism was actually much simpler than many of the droids Smarts had worked on in the past. “Though unless you want to turn our comms unit somewhat murderous, I’m not sure it would help much.” A comms unit with an extermination protocol would be funny, though.

  45. So i'm re-reading Stormlight an stumbled across this beautiful scene: This joke flew right over my head the first time. Last week I was reading that scene during my break at work and that one got me off guard. I literally start laughing and then had to explain to my coworkers what was so funny in my book. I just didn't remember that Pattern is the centre of such good jokes. On the other hand, it has been a while since i last read these books. Just wanted to share this memorable moment with you. That said, i hope you all have a nice day

  46. Stormlight for me. It resonated with me and got me over some awful things in my life. The twist to Mistborn #2, and the ending to #3 was the most beautiful thing I've read in my life. I hope the conclusion to Stormlight 5 can match that.

  47. Okay I could potentially understand Ham and Breeze (never mind that Ham is married and everything), but Clubs and Breeze never gave off that feeling to me. There was a bit of mutual appreciation, but it didn't seem to be romantic appreciation, just a thing of "this person can't be Soothed so I don't have to actively try not to Soothe him to keep him comfortable" from Breeze and from Clubs it was more of "this guy has good wine taste." At least to me. Vibes are...subjective at best.
