  2. Wow. It's... it's been a while. My schedule has been kinda insane lately, so I haven't had much time to be on the Shard. That said, I could have gotten on, but I just... didn't? Idk. Anyway, here's a peek at my crazy life in a nutshell: - Leaders of the Pack (show choir) premiere is in four weeks, and we're not even close to being ready. - First competition is in five weeks, also not ready for that. - I can't even do show choir or dance because I sprained my ankle twelve weeks ago during choreography, I was in a boot for two weeks, and now it's getting worse, and I think it might be a stress fracture. - Speaking of, my sister has a stress fracture in her leg, right below her knee. - My sister's birthday is in three days. - Wolfgang (a cappella) is performing three different Christmas songs in like two weeks, we're not ready for that either. - On that note, MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY! - Thanksgiving was fun but kind of insane. Long story. - I have too much homework. - I'm totally stressed out for no reason and it's making me feel stuck and kind of trapped. - I feel guilty because one of my young women's leaders at church who's super, super nice and kind and the best keeps asking me to babysit for her kids, but the last time I babysat was my first time babysitting ever, and she has five kids who are great but they're kids so ya know, and the oldest hit one of the other kids and I feel like I handled it really badly, and the oldest is like two years younger than I am so it's kind of awkward, so I feel really guilty for saying no all the time even though my schedule doesn't allow it but I'm also just feeling super overwhelmed about it. *phew.* That is one long run-on sentence with bad grammar. - Speaking of being overwhelmed, I'm trying to write a novel, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I'm so caught up on getting my main character's backstory perfect so I can move onto the plot that I feel like I'm getting nowhere. It's stressing. Me. Out. - I think I need a getaway... I wish I could pause time to get everything done and then just RELAX. I could really use that right now. - Grammarly is also stressing me out. - Also boy drama. Yeah. - Roleplaying is fun, but it's also stressful because it reminds me of how I need to get cracking on my book and things. - OH ALSO I'M SO FRUSTRATED AT THIS GIRL AT MY SCHOOL BECAUSE SHE'S THE PRINCIPAL'S DAUGHTER RIGHT, AND WE HAVE TO HAVE REALLY TIGHT CURLS FOR SHOW CHOIR AND SHE WAS LIKE "I DON'T WANNA WEAR THE CURLERS TO SCHOOL" SO THE PRINCIPAL BANNED THEM AND SO NOW WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO KEEP THE CURLS IN DURING THE DAY AND IT'S A HUGE HASSLE AND AGHHHHHHHHHHH - Anyway. Thanks for letting me vent. I'm just overwhelmed. And stressed. Maybe I should go meditate. Thanks. -Kajsa

  3. One of the Honorblades had gone missing, the bearer slain. Kvaseth-son-Wysan rested his head against the cold clay of the wall and thought furiously. The Tukari were clearly in Earthern Truth, hunting. Last night, he had dispatched a message-hawk to Esaan, informing her of the Council's decision. One that no doubt bore the marks of Vartan on it. Only Vartan could have urged a plan of such blinding arrogance. Shut down Earthern Truth. Lure the Tukari out, as the Tukari stalked the Honorblades. You did not stake it all on the treasures of the Heralds. Nin-son-God had charged the Shin with guarding them. It was dereliction of duty to bait the Tukari with them, no matter how tempting. And how many would be killed, before the end? Lives that mattered. Lives that the High Council could save, if Vartan had bothered to listen. But no one did. But Vartan had sneered, "Know your place, warrior." "I represent Esaan in this matter," Kvaseth had said. But it didn't matter, he knew. He had taken up the sword; he had gone from caring for the land, from tending to the grapes in his care and making fine wine to killing, and the moment you first took up the sword, you were lost in the eyes of his people. One who subtracts. He tugged the hood of his brown cloak deeper over his face. No one seemed interested in stopping the killings. He bit back the anger, the reflexive despair. It did not matter. He waited for the message-hawk to return from Esaan, grabbed the hilt of his sword and rotated it slightly, ready for the draw. He remembered the first time he had killed, before they had made him take the stone. Before they had sent him to the monastery to learn the art of the blade properly. Perhaps it didn't matter, even if Esaan agreed with them. He did not think she would. Many more would die, before the Tukari were stopped. People who didn't deserve to die. Helpless people. Good people. Kvaseth wasn't going to let that happen.

  5. Welcome, welcome, to the 74th annual--- Hi! Kajsa (KAY-sa) here. This is where I'm gonna put ALL my many creative works to show off. Feel free to leave comments or suggestions, but please refrain from unsolicited critiques. Thank you! Let's start with a portrait I did of my OC Mira Dethridge, the antagonist in my fantasy novel Harlow. She is sometimes referred to as "Snake Eyes," due to her burning yellow-orange eyes and her devilish manner. Yes, she is a pyrokinetic, and she's very fun to draw! I wish the fire was brighter and her outfit was more dynamic, or maybe I should have incorporated green or blue into the background because color theory. This took me about four hours overall to complete, and I did it on my iPad using Procreate. For aspiring digital artists out there, I recommend watching Sam Yang's YouTube Channel (Samdoesarts) or following him on social media, etc. Watching him work gives you a good idea of how to do it yourself. He has a ton of good videos, and also he's mostly family-friendly! I actually did a study of one of his pieces, incorporating @Ookla the BlowUpperOfStuff's OC Haly into it. That's the one with the marshmallow. Anyway, have a wonderful day! -Kajsa

A fun little thing about this nib is that it takes on the color of whatever ink you're using, so--while it doesn't come through in the photo very well--the whole thing has a slight reddish cast to it!

  10. I'll take the liberty of only responding to this part, as I feel that is the actually crucial part of the discussion. And thank you for taking the time to elaborate on your thinking and position on this. You are correct, I do equate those two things (nature and reality). My position would be that if Investiture (and associated realms) have been created by the same big bang (or deity of choice) then they are equally natural. I would further argue that if it is not originating from the same 'origin' (be it big bang or deity), but an event further in past can be traced as the driving agent of both Investiture creation and e.g. big bang, then Investiture is again natural. I do recognize it is only a perspective, and am willing to continue this discussion/debate while doing my best to acknowledge this difference in perspective. I freely admit that the position you are stating is quite alien to my thinking, however that alone does not make it invalid and so I should not be dismissing it. Here I would argue that while some (e.g. Wax) do share your perspective, others (e.g. Khriss) are more closely aligned to mine (as she spends pretty much her entire life categorizing Investiture and treating it as "just" another natural aspect of reality, albeit complicated). So I would suggest we could try and answer the original question of this thread (religious impacts of the TLM events) from both of these differing positions that can be taken, acknowledging that parts of those differing reactions would be driven by this philosophical (? I guess) difference.

  12. Apparently so :/ Wax is not a scientist, and he specifically means the 'seeming' laws of physical realm, i.e. coinshot can generate force 'out of nowhere', F-gold can create cells, etc. But that is only because he does not include Investiture in his considerations, if someone in our world did not know about electricity and photoelectric effect then toy car powered by a solar cell would look like it is breaking natural laws. Where is it stated that Investiture predates natural world? As far as we know Investiture has always been part of the star cluster that is the Cosmere. Ruin and Preservation created a planet called Scadrial using it yes, but predating a planet is not the same as predating the natural world. Spiritual realm is just another realm of existence, one without space and time dimensions. I could call it 'dimensionless parallel universe with high potential of Investiture field' that contains excitation paralleling excitation of other two universes (physical and cognitive). Name does not define what a thing is. It can be looked into, it can be manipulated (hemalurgy, bondsmithing), so it is going to be subject to experimentation and description, just as any other part of reality. How does that work? If it was not created, and it exists in nature, how is it not part of nature? I think this position is the source of the disagreement here, as we probably have wildly different positions on this. Edit: To answer the original question of the thread, I think that some will question Harmony, and some might move to Survivorism (which would kind of strength Autonomy, as one of the cores of it is independence). Others might move beyond gods to Atheism (in the sense of not considering Shards or Slivers divine, only potential powerful) and the rest might adopt the doctrine of 'trust Harmony for they work in mysterious ways'. Trell will continue to play role in Era 3 (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/377/#e12227), but I think it will be in position of someone who hijacks Survivorism, as 1. Autonomy is a fan of Kelsier and 2. The tenants are already pretty close to what Autonomy fosters (arguably even more independent even). So to sum up, in my opinion the results will be diminishing of Pathism, strengthening of Survivorism and its further shift to valuing being self-reliant and independent, minor appearance of atheism. The second point will then set the stage for Trell to take over Survivorism for her own ends. Regarding Southern Scadrial, I have no clue.

If she had asked what was wrong, he would have hurled a perfectly sassy reply right back at her. If she had told him to cheer up, he would have grouched something about how cheery he'd be if he had played with puppies all day. If she had tried to be silly to cheer him up, he would have barked that he was sorry he wasn't in the mood for games. But "Is there anything I can do?" poured cool water on his fire. It told him that she cared. It told him that she saw he needed something, even if she didn't know what. It told him that she hurt with him.” -The Monster in the Hollows

  18. When Lux came out, I seem to remember hearing that there were plans for two more books in the Reckoners world co-authored by Brandon. But I'm not finding anything about that now, and I'm pretty sure I haven't heard anything about that in Brandon's recent publication schedule announcements. Will there be more coming out? If so, are they going to be sequels to Lux, or other stories in the same universe?

I love him so much, and I’m really happy he’s rereading the books. However, I’m not entirely sure I can take much more of this. If I start acting strange, know that I’ve embraced the madness and am now discussing Pathians and talking butts forever. (By the way, @Ookla the Floofy, I swear I didn’t steal your username. This may get very confusing very quickly, though. Especially since I like to read and post on your Creator’s Corner threads…)

  21. Absorb every detail. Memorize the first paragraph of every book: ”The wheel of time turns and ages come and pass, leaving memory that becomes legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes again. In one age, called the 3rd age by some, an age yet to come, an age long past, a wind rose…the wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the wheel of time. But it was a beginning.”

  22. In The Lost Metal, we learn that Autonomy can create a perpendicularly by gathering these things together: 1. having a large number of metalborn in one place 2. a large amount of investiture in one place. This investiture might need to be unkeyed/purified but that is unclear. 3. Some sort of timing element 4. Other unknown details (potentially fixed false beliefs about Harmony being dead already, but we just don't know) We see in Stormlight that the Skybreakers were led to believe that too many surgebinders returning to Roshar could cause a desolation to begin. Now, I think most people feel Ishar was either lying, lied to, or insane, but if too many metalborn in one area can open up a planet to Autonomy's attack, then could too many Surgebinders do something similar? Was Ishar possibly not 100% wrong about this? Could allowing Surgebinders to amass in one area make the planet more susceptible to attack from other shards? I mean potentially, maybe it would have made it easier for the Everstorm to cross over if there were a lot of Surgebinders about?

  23. The problem is, in Cosmere Investiture is another state of matter and energy: In Cosmere Investiture is inseparable part of natural world, described by laws and set of rules. That however does not mean everyone in Cosmere knows and discovered all those laws. Wax tried to describe mechanisms of Investiture using laws and understanding he possessed at that time - which might not be correct ones. And here I use a real life example - search for planet Vulcan. Scientists using Newton's law of gravity were calculating and predicting orbits of planets, they observed that the real orbit of Mercury was different than predicted one, and they speculated wrongly that there must be another planet in between Sun and Mercury, that disturbes Mercury's orbit (similar to how they discovered Neptun). They'd been searching for that planet until Einstein's theory of general relativity explain why Mercury's orbit departs from previously predicted one. They were wrong, because Newtonian physics is not precise enough. Understanding of nature on Scadrial right now is simply not advanced enough to link Investiture with matter and energy and described it as a natural phenomena. The same goes for Cognitive and Spiritual Realms - they are both integral part of Cosmere governed by sets of specifics rules. People like Wax just don't understand that yet. And to get back on tracks - I think that the events of TLM will even increase the numbers of Pathism's followers as people could clearly witness god's divine intervention (even if very restricted) and Kandra presence that saved them, and religion doctrine might simply add Authonomy as a rival to Harmony wanting to destroy Scadrial. People just got the proof that Harmony is a real, powerful god, caring for Scadrial, and they just might ignore implications of existence of other gods - if that information will be shared to public (unlikely, I must say), as for now only selected few (mostly Kandra and Ghostbloods) knows what really was happening and why. For most people it was "just" culmination of the plot against Elendel resolved again by Wax and Wayne and few others - not divine battle over Scadrial existence. So nothing will really change.

It gets sort of eclipsed by Halloween and Christmas, but lately it tends to sneak up on me, even though we’re shopping and cooking and stuff. It’s funny how often that seems to happen to me lately. I guess it’s an effect of getting older. Anyway, I wanted to thank you all for being awesome people and all those amazing things. And once more, happy thanksgiving! —Haly

  35. Once upon a time, there was a girl who liked to write. She had been telling stories for a very long time, and she had always had an active imagination, even if she was very quiet around most people. When she was twelve, she actually started writing and even completing some of her stories. It was exciting; and it was fun. And then a lot of things happened. The world. School. Her own mind. For years, she didn't manage to complete anything she started writing, and she was barely writing at all. The fun was gone, replaced by worry that one misstep could ruin everything, and make people hate her. The excitement was gone, too. It's been a long time since I cracked ten thousand words on anything. I finished a short story a few months ago, the first thing I had finished in years. That didn't even break five thousand. I had lost it. I'm still not sure what 'it' was, but it was gone. Writing had lost it's light for me, and no surprise. I was going through some pretty bad years, and honestly, they probably aren't over, because that's life. But I think it's getting better. I didn't just hit ten thousand words. I've hit fifteen. And I'm nowhere near done. I don't know what changed. Strike that. I know one thing that's changed. I stopped caring what other people were going to think of how I put together this silly language we call English. But why did that change? I have no idea. I've been trying and praying for years, and I think maybe I was starting to think that I was never going to love writing again. Turns out, that's not true. This is going to sound cheesy as all getout, but here goes anyway. Life gets better. The trick is, it's really hard to make that happen on your own. You need help. And that can be hard too. But it's so worth it. I'm writing again. And that's a small thing, but it's also a pretty big thing, because I'm writing again. And it feels really good.

  36. I think that the era of individual worldhoppers as we know it is coming to an end. Too many worlds have too much of a mass media, too unified a government and too ovious an alien influence to ignore the rest of the Cosmere as a topic for at least the general political elite. As soon as your queen's lover is a space alien from the dawn of time or aliens detonate a nuclear weapon in your extended harbor, it is time for some Lewis & Clarke style expeditions and diplomatic missions.

I am with you about everything else, but I really want new Era 3 characters to be from more normal backgrounds, i.e. not rich descendants of the Era 1 and 2 characters and not orphaned street urchins. Middle class, working class, etc. I'd dearly like to see how awakening of Metallic talents affect lives of such people, given their potential to be life-changing. And to finally learn how new snapping happens and whether it is required for ferrings too! Now that I think about it, adolescence must be even more stressful on Scadrial, with everyone desperately hoping to manifest a cool power, only to become more and more disappointed as years pass...

Ooooh, this really frustrates me; I had independently developed a somewhat similar theory, except I felt that the four Dawnshards were enough by themselves to get us to 16 Shards – Adonalsium divided into four, and then each piece divided into four again, as shown in the mural under Aimia. My original scheme was this: With a nice neat theory that the Shards forming the central diagonal (Ruin, Odium, Preservation, and Dominion) tended toward villainy because, to paraphrase what Frost said in his letter to Hoid, they lacked the context of Adonalsium's virtues. Odium was Passion without Honor, Mercy, or Devotion; Ruin wanted change for its own sake rather than caring about the result like Cultivation or Invention, and Preservation was content to let Rashek reign in tyranny for at least a thousand years because he found the predictability of it soothing. However, those WoBs linked in the OP have convinced me, begrudgingly, that Ruin must be in some way related to Passion, even though it spoils the symmetry I thought I had discovered. So my current chart is this:

Words of Radiance is probably my favorite novel of all time. Just peak story-telling, character-writing, world-building. The Lord of the Rings (J. R. R. Tolkien): Also no introduction necessary. The Metamorphosis (Franz Kafka): A novella, but a very powerful one. It encapsulates the feeling of depression very well I feel, and it's written with very precise prose. In general, I love Kafka's way of writing. It's very "German", in a way that I can't really explain. Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoevsky): Already mentioned in this thread, it's huge, it's psychological, it's philosophical, and it's also just a really enjoyable (albeit at times heavy) read because of what a brilliant writer Dostoevsky was. The City of Dreaming Books (Walter Moers): This is more on the comedic side of things, but also with a lot of references to literature in genereal. I just love the tone of the narrative voice so much. Stunning how many ideas he put into one book, and this wasn't even the only one where he did it (with Rumo being my second favorite, maybe even tied with this one). Moominland Midwinter (Tove Jansson): Perhaps the most thoroughly melancholic children/YA book I've ever read. Very "Scandinavian" (I mean, it's Finnish), but besides the general winter atmosphere, it also has a lot of heart-warming stuff, as usual with the Moomins. I've probably missed a few, but these are those that came to mind right now.

And yes childhood trauma is very tough to overcome but she's had the world handed to her on a silver platter the least she could do is not get her salty ass tears on the plate. Like I said, Kaladin too. Being broken is only a reason to not find a purpose. If one is thrust upon you like these two have had put your petty problems and quarrels aside and sad times and do your duty. Stop making it harder on everyon else. Also the character discovery and self journey are important, yes. I just feel like the points that are emphasized are very irksome points and stuff that anyone else that has gone through similar problems as Kaladin and Shallan wouldn't falter where they do, instead finding more purpose than problems in the current events.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that it was the first one I finished but still, it's pure magic even to this day. Plus, it has my favorite boss battles, maybe not too hard, but all of them absolutely epic. Skyward Sword would be a close second but that might change as I keep playing more games, I've been a fan for years but still relatively new when it comes to finished games.

  46. I loved Twilight Princess when it came out, but it has aged rather badly in places and it's also hard to deny that it's rough around the edges. It has left its impact on me though, there's a fair share of nostalgia involved in it for me, and the Twilight World sequences (especially the sound effects and music) have largely shaped how I imagine Shadesmar's vibe in the Cosmere. The Wind Waker has aged much better though, it's still just stunning and just a well-rounded game all around. I respect Breath of the Wild immensely, but I never really got into it, mostly because I loathe the shrines. They never feel like anything, and I never really feel like I accomplished much when I finished one. I hope they don't do that again. My personal "underdog favorite" is Minish Cap. It's short, but the mechanics are great and it's probably the most gorgeous GBA game I played. I love the look. Much better than the "trying to look 3 dimensional" look of the DS entries. The Link's Awakening remake deserves a shout-out at this place because of how absolutely beautiful the designs are. (Although the dungeons are admittedly very weak. It has a lovely setting though!) So yeah, I'll round it off here to keep the comment on the short side. It's probably my favorite game series along with Metroid and Smash Bros!
