  3. Terrible decided that the only way he could change his name was if he could fix his breath first. He'd heard that Evenlyn liked to keep spices on hand, so he decided that she'd be a good target for the nightly murder. Unfortunately, Evenlyn had decided that Terrible was a not terrible choice for her own nightly execution, so Terrible died to a coin in the chest, his breath still unfixed. He had, however, managed to slit Evenlyn's throat before dying, for what that was worth. Cinnamon (Evenlyn Royale) was a Village Coinshot! Dannnnnnex (Terrible Breath Dispensation) was a Spiked Mistborn! Day 6 has begun, and will end at 5PM EST on Tuesday the 8th. 4. Temeria - Hall of Legends Temeria found herself grinning when Ember studied the insides of the rock carefully. It felt good to see him that way, all excited and aflame. He loved to do things, to really do something that was more than their usual daily life. At her question he seemed to brighten even more, matching her excitement instantly. "Mmm... with your hands?" He suggested, "Some things go back together easy and some don't. And some you need to change more. Rocks? Rocks rocks rocks..." He frowned and she smiled at him. He was cute when he frowned and concentrated like that. She loved how he concentrated fully on a single thing, how he was able to shut everything else out and just be. Pensively she placed the two halves together with her hands. They nearly fitted together, the small section in the middle she had turned to dust missing. "Heat." Ember said and flared with joy. "Lots and lots of heat. Heat changes things." He was right. Just like a sword had to be changed by heat, she had heard theories that stone was able to melt, too. Temeria pocketed the two halves and extended a hand for Ember to sit upon. "I have to admit, that I doubt that we can change this city by heat alone." But maybe, a thought came to her mind and she brightened, glad to finally have an idea that might actually work. "You're a genius." She grinned at Ember happily, "we can't burn the whole city down, but maybe we can, no maybe we should, find out whether there are structures we need to get rid off. Remnants of the past that don't work well anymore. Things like that." Spoken aloud it sounded nearly as daring as the original idea. But it was more, it was way more to the point. "We need help." She decided and pressed her lips slightly together. "This will be awkward and uncomfortable and I wish, I wish-" She trailed off. She wished Mac had never left so that she could have helped him. Not that she could change it. "We need help." she repeated. "And so we'll try to find someone with the right knowledge." Even if it meant facing her sister again. They hadn't parted on bad terms, but she wasn't entirely sure what to make of her. "Let's go." She decided, forcing herself to stop thinking about it. "Let's start to do something." And they would start by asking questions in the one place she knew where she would get an answer. The Scholar's guild. Temeria gritt her teeth and then forced herself to relax to try and share Ember's joy at doing something. Then she started down the street, passed people who spent the Vigil in a thousand different ways, towards the headquarters. "Give me a sign when I start acting like an idiot." she asked Ember, "she's got that effect on me." After a pause she added. "Or when I'm mean. Or too shy, or -" Temeria drew her face in a grimace. "Just stop me from doing something completely stupid." she finished vaguely. It had been one thing to ask her sister to show her around, but to need her help, it grated her, more than she was willing to admit. Temeria took another deep breath and then another last turn. There it was, down the street. The Scholar's Guild. She tapped her fingers against the handle of the sword and then forced herself to let her hand fall. She was here to ask for help, not to accidently threaten someone. "You're with me." She asked Ember, knowing the answer. "Thank you." Gently she touched his form. "Let's try to make good on a promise." Temeria lifted her hand and knocked on the door. @Voidus @mathiau @NerdyAarakocra

  5. Ember- Hall of Legends Flittering through the air Ember alighted on the pile of dust that had once been a stone. Not it could be all sorts of things, even if it was currently deciding to be a remarkably uninteresting pile of dust. His face was split by a wide grin as a small puff of air picked some of the dust up to be carried elsewhere. Mixed with other things. Become something new and different. The second stone was even better, Temeria has split it precisely into two pieces, the cut so clean and fine that Ember could perfectly examine each striation and grove to its surface. Being broken in this way was very interesting, it almost looked the same but a little bit different. Humans did that didn't they? Split into two humans? One of them a little different than the other. "Now, how do I put them together again?" Temeria asked excitedly. Ember matched the excitement in an instant, so very happy to be doing things. And especially this sort of thing, it was so much more exciting than eating and sleeping and all the other things humans did. "Mmm... with your hands?" He suggested exuberantly. "Some things go back together easy and some don't. And some you need to change more. Rocks? Rocks rocks rocks..." He frowned with a depth of thought rarely experienced. Ember could remember rocks, he'd seen plenty. But a long time ago, there had been rocks that were different perhaps? Or so he had heard. He remembered seeing some of them, broken. How had they been put back together? How did rocks work? "Heat." He said, flaring with joy at the recollection. "Lots and lots of heat. Heat changes things." ~~Derit - Alleycity University~~ Derit Sylvette was only able to lay a few sprigs of lavender, tied together with ribbon, at the University's central square. She placed it delicately amongst the other arrangements of flowers, pictures, letters and candles that had been left for those who had been lost as a result of the Forgery. Either dead from the chaos when it was broken, or vanished from the world entirely with their lives tied to the magic the Dark Alley had laid over the city. Derit tried to think of all those who had been lost, to focus on each tragedy. All of these people had been important to someone. Were important themselves. All of them had deserved to live. But her mind drifted back to a Professor she had not seen in a week now. He was known for long absences and not leaving his office for days at a time, but only that morning Derit had seen a new Professor moving into the space, placing their own name card at the door. She wiped away the tears that she had begun to shed, not ashamed to be seen crying, but she knew what he would have wanted. Rather than sit here mourning what had happened, she should help make sure the city never again had to go through such a travesty. She stood, brushing some dust from her dark navy-blue trousers, and with one final look at the gathered sorrow, she left to gather her friends. This university, it was said, had been where the magic of the Forgery had been shattered. A number of people had begun to use it as a memorial site in the early days and today a vigil had been arranged, huge numbers of people from all districts of the city had arrived to pay respects. Derit hoped that while they were here she might be able to use this tragedy to finally incite some genuine good in this city.

  8. Rampant speculation about the science bits of TLM previews guided a bit by how the Navani parts of RoW went. I think Wax's experiment is "polarizing" the ettmetal, and the explosion is caused by this changing ettmetal's intent creating Discordium which is even more explosive than Harmonium. It's possible that leaves behind a bit of atium, which is the "lost metal", because Sazed is unbalanced from having some Preservation invested in the people from Scadrial, Bits that started the speculation, mostly that it seems the cosmere science behind how Harmonium works is inspired by magnets. VenDell reinforcing that Harmonium can't be split because Sazed holds both shards, like how if you take a bar magnet that has two poles and if you split it in half is still a magnet - Wax saying Trellium's interactions with ettmetal and spikes reminds him of magnetism. I'm including this because it's thematically related if not strictly related, but could be important for Intent. The description of the polarization of ettmetal, it is becoming something else. This is likely just referring to the atium and lerasium appearance, but I think the fact that you can visibly distinguish the atium and lerasium bits is key to why it's changing to Discordium, the powers aren't working together. When the ettmetal is being separated by the Trellium, the separation is more than physical. It's like Navani and creating antilight, where intent matters. It isn't creating atium and lerasium though because Sazed holds both shards, but the intent is that they stop existing together, working together. Therefore it becomes Discordium, the powers are fighting. Inherently unstable, immediate explosion and the metals vaporize. From HoA when Sazed takes up both shards Words of Brandon about Discord, which is also referenced in HoA prophecy. I also think it's interesting that the powers fighting destroys, which Ruin wants to do anyways. It's a weird parallel to the imbalance of Preservation/Ruin to the Scadrial and Sazed. "His name shall be Discord, yet they shall love him for it.” They'd love him for it if it could be used to make great weapons that can stand up against the anti-investiture nukes in era 4. One additional note: The red ring around the planet, typically associated with corruption of intent, could be Autonomy/Trell's actions on Harmony, which has been speculated by many others, and which could be paralleled when the Trellium spike is used to force apart Harmonium. And then unhinged cremposting: The main conflict is two societies from the northern hemisphere of the planet, and the other is literally from the south pole (MAGNETS!) Also the well of ascension used to be at the geographic and magnetic North Pole, and Rashek moved the well and the magnetic north pole to Luthadel.

  9. So, I just discovered the sonata in G minor for cello by Henry Eccles, and I think I'm in love. The largo is gorgeous! I've been listening to it over and over for probably 10-20 minutes. I can't put it into words, as is customary with myself. Please, for listen to it yourselves. It makes me think of sadness, loneliness, fleeting happiness, and hope, somehow. I'm just a little bit in awe right now, sorry if I raise anyone's expectations too high.

  11. I enjoyed these chapters a lot. I liked the pacing and the emotions and didn't really have many suggestions. As I read: "The longer it takes to get to Rayson the better" I like the resistance! "There’s a grating noise and the metal box starts to move" I love the descriptions of things we take for granted but this mc has never seen. "...around the pupil, opens the door" You already said the door was open. "I have the urge to punch[CSA1] him again." I would want to punch him too “You’re dismissed, enjoy your stay here Miss " Well holy crap that was intense. Overall I think that was a pretty good chapter. "I don’t think I am, my family is everything." That's a comma splice. "Not perfect like we though in the cities, but normal good.” Think? Thought? "Triported he proposed Then "Missing period I loved the thinking of chocolate as a fruit "I’ll be fine as long as I’m careful. “Let’s go.” Good note to end the chapter on!

  13. This is a complaint against spellcheck, which seems to think I need to pick a side on British and American English. I'll use 'grey' and 'demeanour' followed immediately by 'honor' and 'labor' all I want, thanks. I don't even know when I started mixing them, though. That's something I'll wonder about for a while.

  16. Ahhh sorry for the double post but I drew a cat please don't kill me This is from a D&D campaign I'm doing in my youth group. We got the cat when we ignored the DM's pointed sign to go transport cargo, and instead went and saved a random cat. This scene happened when I requested one of the rogues, Tim (we have three rogues in a group of eight people) to go scout out the cave ahead. He rolled a nat-20, and beat my passive perception of 16. So, I thought I was talking to him, but it ended up being a cat sitting on a rock. I still don't know how that happened, but it did. I may upload a sketch of my D&D character soon, but we'll see!

  17. Temeria - Hall of Legends Break things so that you can fix them. The words were so simple and yet they offered a whole new perspective. "We can do that?" She asked Ember out of surprise, not even considering that the answer might be a no. When he said so, they could. "Let's try." She said with an excited grin and rushed over to the side of the square where a few small bushes and flowers were growing. She picked up a stone and turned it around in her fingers. It was a stone. Rough surface, covered by dirt, more or less grey. Pressing her fingers together she wasn't able to do more than brush off some of the dirt. Perfect. So it wasn't already broken. Temeria closed her eyes and concentrated on what she had learned so far. Which, she realized, wasn't a lot. Studying wasn't exactly high on her list of things like to do. When she opened her eyes again she eyed the stone warily. Hesitating for another moment she then focused and inhaled. Her fingers started to glow gently and she grinned when she felt the energy, the wild, raw power inside, suddenly not understanding why she hadn't practiced more. It felt so good to finally do something more than to walk around and watch people. Ember was right. Breaking things was the perfect start. And it couldn't be that complicated. Things broke so easily. She pictured her light covering the stone, filling it and then break it apart. The stone crumbled in her hand, fine dust falling to the ground between her fingers. With a disappointed sigh she opened her hand and let go of the remaining dust. "Sorry" she muttered towards Ember and brushed of the dirt. "Nothing left to look at." She grinned apologetically and picked up another one. When she inhaled again she lifted the stone and tried to picture more clearly what she was trying to achieve. Two halves, so that there was something for Ember to look at. So maybe - she didn't cover the whole stone but instead drew only a thin line across its surface. "Break." She told the stone without realizing that she had spoken aloud. "Come on." Nothing happened and she cursed under her breath. How could she break something and not break it. In the end it would be easier if she used a saw to cut off a thin branch to use, instead of this stupid stone. Cut off a branch. Her face brightened at the thought. Not breaking, but cutting. She tapped the stone with her finger, picturing the line of light on its surface. And then she sliced through it, the stone falling open, two halves lying on her palm. Proudly she lifted them for Ember to take a close look. "Now, how do I put them together again?" She asked excitedly. @Voidus

  19. Mac, the Rooftop Garden. "Well then, do not let me detain you further. And for what it's worth, Mac, it is good to see you again." He smiles briefly at the compliment. "Thank you," he replied, taking one last view of the city before looking down at Lita again, "It's good to be back, and I'm glad you're still hanging around here. I wasn't joking earlier when I said that you were the most qualified person to run the department." With that, he picked up his overcoat, draped it over his arm, and walked to the doorway, disappearing suddenly as he stepped over the threshold.

  20. Oh boy oh boy! Another sketch! So... I took the Knights Radiant test and found out I was an Edgedancer! Exciting! In celebration, at 10 last night, I did a sketch of me (in Roshar) with my Cultivation Spren and Shardblade. Enjoy! I designed the Spren off of drawings I'd seen of Wyndle. The leaves kinda ended up looking like a cactus, so she's a Catcus now. Her name is Myndle (y'know like meow and Wyndle) The Shardblade is so stormin' large because I'm a relatively small person, and shardblades are like 6ft long or something. I took inspiration from Adolin's shardblade (I used a sketch of a sketch for reference) I just kinda scribbled markings that I thought looked cool on there - they don't mean anything, though. I like how the clothing turned out - I'm wearing a tunic-dress tied at the waist, over nice baggy pants and tight boots, with a long-sleeve shirt. Again, apologies for the low quality image and shadows. Have a wonderful day, Humans!

  21. The wind began to whip up around them, a faintly ominous keen in the distance the only sound it gave. The storm overhead began to open up and thin droplets began to soak the ground in the distance, encroaching the distance slowly, almost respectful of the conversation that was being had as it closed in a circle around them. The lightning flashed both overhead and underfoot. Storm and Forgery both flickering with barely suppressed power. And Voidus listened. He listened to the words of the man he had called a friend. The one who had, in all the many worlds, known Voidus the longest. The one who had helped him with so much, who had staved off the boredom for longer than anyone else. "So after all this." Voidus replied quietly. "You still don't understand at all." Another flash of illumination lit them from underfoot, throwing ghastly shadows over the Stranger's already horrific form. And it illuminated a man who now stood next to him, or the shadow of a man at least. Looking remarkably like Voidus but for the bearing and the eyes. Sudiov stared impassively back, simply allowing the conversation to unfold as it may. But it was clear that he had chosen a side. "What would I have you do?" Voidus said, his eyes glancing between the two. "If you had cared about what I actually wanted then I think he could have given you perfectly enough information to realize that, you are exceedingly clever after all. What I would have had you do is what I always wanted you to do. It is what I became friends with you for and the purpose I had always hoped you would fulfil only to be bitterly disappointed. I wanted you to kill me." The rain finally reached them, cool droplets that felt like they should sizzle as they touched his skin. The furnace that rested just beneath his skin was not quenched by the rains, only fueled further from it. And finally he let the anger enter his voice. "I was a monster. One nearly equal to the one that once took everything from me. I would have sacrificed this world or any other to simply... end. But I didn't. I prepared the contingencies, I tried to find somebody who could actually do the deed. But you were unwilling. And then when my chance finally came, my own desire for destruction manifesting into a shadow, I resisted it. And I was never quite sure why, until this world of yours. Until I met someone, one who didn't fit into your perfect world. And one who eventually broke the whole thing apart. With a copper paperclip. So thank you, my friend, for showing me a light by which to live once again even if it is not the one you expected. Thank you." The void tore from him as he fed his anger into it, without sound or light or sensation it destroyed all around him. All but the small area where those who had arrived with him now stood. The full force of the void began to devour the cognitive realm and the Forgery. An even deeper darkness settling into his hands to form an extended haft with one end turning into a curved and wicked blade. "And goodbye." Voidus said, with a note of finality.

  22. Thinking about a song I sang for an honors choir in 5th grade. There's a reason these lyrics have stayed with me all of eight years. The water is wide, I cannot cross o'er Neither have I The wings to fly Build me a boat That can carry two And both shall row My true love and I A ship there is And she sails the seas She's laiden deep As deep can be But not so deep As the love I'm in And I know not if I sink or swim I leaned by back Against a young oak Thinking it were A trusty tree But first it bended And then it broke Thus did my love Prove false to me Oh love is splendid And love is kind Bright as a jewel When first it's new But love grows old And waxes cold And fades away Like the morning dew

  23. My brain went through the same things. Here's where I'm at currently: Book 1 prologue is Lessie's death, and Chapter 1 is Wax re-entering society and hating it / being forced to find a wife. The last scene ends with him finding a new balance (Lord w/ a license) & choosing Steris. The theme of the book: Accepting new beginnings? Book 2: Prologue is meeting Lessie, Chapter 1 is Paalm killing people. Chapter 2 is Wax and Steris and their sort of too clinical relationship. Book ending is Wax killing his wife again, and her choosing to kill herself. Then Steris and he finally beginning to bond. The theme: ? Book 3: Prologue is Wax's first firm decision on who he is (lawman). Chapter 1 is him heading to his wedding but with reservations still. Ending is Wax choosing to marry Steris because he loves her, and giving up the lawman thing for a new him-- the full-time Lord of his house version of him (who still hunts the Set, but doesn't crave the small time stuff anymore). Theme: Moving on. Book 4:??? Not really sure Cool catch on the beginnings of the Set, it's certainly possible. I always got the vibe Telsin was recruited rather than is the top-top dog i.e. founder though.

  24. I agree that Miles was a special case of "always healing" and so was healing almost as quickly as the damage was done to him; but burning a goldmind would give him a burst of healing power, not "continual" healing. He stored the "excess" healing into one of his several goldminds, that were also spiked into his body (or even completely internal). He was "always healing" by dint of always tapping gold, similar to how Rashek was continually tapping a Compounding-filled atiummind to stay alive for hundreds of years beyond his natural span. A bullet to the head would not "have time" to settle in to disrupt the mental process of Miles' tapping a metalmind because he was already tapping it, but a normal Bloodmaker, if killed "instantly" or rendered immediately unconscious, would be unable to tap gold quickly enough as a reaction, and thus would die.

  25. Vinnie considered himself an expert on Shades. He did, after all, have a silvery knife in his hand and steel in his gaze. The night air was cold, blowing against his exposed biceps, and he lamented how out of fashion full coats were. It would keep him warm, but he was an explorer of dangerous forests and a denier of shades, and he had to look the part. He put the knife away as he emerged from the forest into the village, though there wasn't a reason to. Shades were just as likely to attack there as anywhere else, assuming the Simple Rules were violated. He trusted, though, that a township like this survived because it could keep them. Vinnie had been tasked with leading a group, a crew, across the forest. Their mission was of no importance to him, but their survival was. The crew he needed was in this town, somewhere... he just had to find out who was on board. Then, they'd be off, and with any luck at all would make it through. Following the Simple Rules was easy when you knew what they were. In theory. Welcome to Quick Fix 63: Simple Rules! I'll be the GM, and @Devotary of Spontaneity will be the IM. 26. Marie - the Bindpoint Marie had never been to another world before, so maybe lots of them were like this, but - the Alleyverse was weird. Some of it was familiar. There were clothing styles and architecture similar to, sometimes even perfectly matching, that of Scadrial today, over 300 years past the Catacendre. And even, to her surprise, some from before, designs and fashions she thought she remembered from the Final Empire. Harmony had mentioned, when suggesting this place, that it was something unique; containing many different cultures from many different worlds and time periods. But she'd been more focused on the idea of it being not here, of it being described as apparently chaotic enough on its own that she, while out of place, might actually be able to live a normal life for a while - whatever that looked like. That had been true; it was chaotic. Marie wasn't sure what the benefit was to building structures that looked smashed together or half in the ground - she even spotted one building up a few stories high on a pillar of stone with no apparent means of ascending outside of a Steelpush. Some businesses combined two or more different practices or wares that she really wouldn't have normally put together: was that one over there selling both pastries ("Cookies so good you'll think about them for days!") and weaponry ("Get an aluminum knife, save yourself the strife!")? A man and a woman stood outside it, arguing with each other. She caught a snippet as she went past. "I owned this establishment before any of this Forgery nonsense." "Well I'm the one whose name is on the lease now!" "The city needs a way to defend itself more than it does another bakery! I don't know if you remember the real wars that really happened, considerably worse than they did in the -" She continued out of hearing. Could have burned tin, but she was trying to save her metals; she didn't know where to get more yet. Nor did she have any money to buy them with, but she'd Push over that river when she got to it. Something big had happened here recently, sounded like. It was in the people, too; many were visibly still shaken, fearful, paranoid. Some looked like they didn't quite trust the ground not to fall out from underneath them - or like they didn't trust themselves not to fall on their own. Marie understood that; she was happy to have become an Inquisitor, of course, but it had taken her time to get used to how different it felt, the new weight, the pain. And that wasn't even bringing in the Allomancy she'd had to learn. And the Catacendre...burning all around as the ground cracked and Scadrial was remade...she wondered if something similar had happened here at some point, to cause the craters and buildings in odd places. Marie had been getting some attention as she walked through the crowds. A little less than she'd expected, actually, coming from Scadrial where she was definitely one of the strangest things around. Here, a lot of people saw her and were spooked to varying degrees, but they didn't all scream and run, and some hardly reacted at all. Yet others seemed more awed than anything. Did they not recognize an Inquisitor, hailing from worlds without them? Or...were some of these people used to Hemalurgy? She also passed a few other beings who weren't human. Some who were koloss-blooded, but many more who she couldn't identify: gray-skinned people following behind groups, marbled creatures with carapace like scorpions, a couple beings encased in bulky metal armor that surely couldn't be safe with Coinshots and Lurchers around. There were people from all over here, even other nonhumans. If she was going to relearn normalcy and bond or whatever anywhere, here was probably a good start.

  27. Heyo folks! I am writing a Marie post atm, she'll have just arrived into the city on the day of the vigil. I imagine an Inquisitor walking the streets could cause some interesting reactions, if people want. Gonna tag @Voidus @Mrs. Voidus and @NerdyAarakocra - I believe all of you have new characters wandering the city in SeKaan, Valeria, and KanDraa? I know Marie would at least have some feelings about meeting some kandra, and I figure Kan might not be pleased to meet an Inquisitor (she's not DA, but very well might look it). @Lord Meeker, I know you've also got a character wandering, but I don't know how to engage with the plot you've got going on - it seems like a personal thing, with you writing all the characters involved on both sides. Is this a plot thread you actually want others to play with, or is this something you intend to control entirely yourself? I am hesitant to interact with something if I don't know anything about it or how it will interplay with other characters, rather than being one person's self-contained backstory. We're really trying to encourage collaboration this era - is this a plot you want to pitch to everyone, or is this something you're going to do on your own?

  28. Spoilers for Bands* How do the introductions of the WW books relate to their books as a whole? Unlike stormlight, where the purpose of their intros is pretty straightforward. I've been marveling as I re-read in anticipation of TLM how much more subtle the purposes seem to be, esp. now that we have TLM's intro. Re-reading Bands rn, and knowing now what will happen later in the book, Im fascinated imagining that maybe we're seeing the founding of The Set in real time? Telsin could be founding a splinter group that rejects the V's teachings Is the village somehow connected to the Set? The Village might not be aligned w/ Trell but maybe they're aligned w/ The Set? Ive always felt a sort of background suspiciousness whenever we're there, there seems to be a lot going on underneath the surface thats hinted at but never made definitive... Maybe the Set is trying to create Fullborn and needs the cooperation of Village. What do ya think? These Sample chapters have really been making my brain go in interesting places....

  32. Double-posting to thank you! I rechecked, and tried a new converter. Still leaked. Long story short, realised it was a very thin crack in the housing (it's transparent), so the loupe wasn't enough, but I uncovered it via a flashlight. No more leaking, thank goodness. But I'll need to pick up more spare parts...

  33. Well, fingers crossed that I don't lose my love for Szeth as I find out more about him. SA2, ch18: That was a fun chapter; I like seeing Kaladin fight. The part where the Stormlight failed him was a bit disturbing though. Does Stormlight not support certain attitudes? I hope there's a better explanation.

  34. Public school is slow, boring, and doesn't teach you certain important things. Homeschool is great because you get to do all those things, learn the WHY, especially in math, and they aren't just stuffing information into your brain, so it stays for a week or so and then falls out again, you actually want to remember the information. (Example: I remember very little from my one year in public school, but I remember a little song about kingdom, phylum, class from kindergarten.) Plus, you get to do things more based on your interests. You don't just have to go along with the curriculum with no say in it at all. You can choose something that fits for you.

  36. ~Laurelai; Lita's Apartment, the Alleys~ Laurelai gave a faux frown at Lita's skepticism, a small hint of actual hurt pride. True the memories were false, but then Laurelai was a Forger, she had plenty of memories and experience that were not precisely real as far as the rest of the world was concerned. It didn't mean they were somehow less trustworthy. Forged memories were clean, neat, exactly what they needed to be. "Would you like a juice afterwards?" She said, smiling slyly. "We used to give them to people at the hospital afterwards. Well, if they were well behaved anyway." Drawing the spike smoothly from its box, Laurelai looked to Lita's hip, cheeks faintly pink as she lined the spike up. Lita had, blessedly, not revealed anything more than necessary, and the situation was more clinical than anything else, enough that Laurelai could focus only at the point she needed to. She was moments from placing pressure onto the spike when she hesitated, eyes flickering uncertainly for an instant. Best to be certain. The lines shifted again, an instants focus to a well remembered pattern. The Researcher had never switched from Records to the DOCI, instead she had eventually moved to R&D. She was well experienced in most matters of scientific inquiry and research but especially Hemalurgy. Other Denizens might jam a spike into a bindpoint, but the Researcher performed art with metal and flesh. "L-712" She muttered to herself, repositioning the spike very slightly. "Minimal side effects. No interference with existing spikes. Appropriate for concealment and placement should not affect any nerves or sensation." She looked up to Lita's eyes, giving a reassuring but somewhat cold smile and only in the instant that Lita looked back and drew her focus did Laurelai lean onto the spike, using her body weight to expertly drive it through skin and flesh. A single motion, smooth entry with no deviation. Perfect placement, as always. The work drew a more genuine smile of satisfaction from her as she examined it. ~SeKaan; Mistkeep~ Lord Syril Valiert strode purposefully through the streets, his back straightened and chin raised with the pride of House Valiert. He had no time to listen to the common folks around him, even if the average passer by was significantly more affluent than they were in other parts of the city. He paused with a weighty sigh, leaning more heavily on his cane as he contemplated the state of affairs that had led him here. Walking the streets rather than riding in a carriage. He lit a cigar for himself, holding it between a set of too-white teeth that widened into a grin as he saw a pair of rather attractive Elendel nobleladies passing close by. He swept a genteel bow in their direction but unfortunately did not have the time to linger and chit chat, only making sure to slip the name of his hotel into the conversation in case either of them should ever wish to visit and socialize further when he had the time. Realizing he was running late he ducked through a small side street, glancing behind him for a moment and then sheltering in a small alcove between buildings as his flesh bubbled and warped. He pulled a nearby bag over and started pulling a number of items from within it, arranging them neatly even as his limbs contorted. A few moments later a small jewelry boxed seemed to surface from inside his chest and he pulled a number of items from it before pushing it back in. "By the Survivor." Miss Thyron said, wafting a hand in front of her nose. "Must these nobles always leave a trail of cigar smoke behind them? Horrid stuff." She was about to step onto Brass street on the opposite end of the sidestreet but paused a moment before coming into full visibility. Tapping a lacquered nail to her painted red lips before looking down at herself and frowning. Her eyelashes fluttered in thought before suddenly snapping wide. The suit. SeKaan remembered. They get all strange about women wearing suits. Ducking back into the alcove they pulled a simple grey dress from their chest cavity and switched clothing at lightning speeds. Lord Valiert had let them listen in to a number of people who assumed the Lord was both too distant to overhear and too preoccupied to care. But Miss Thyron would be able to mingle a little more easily. Syril was charming, certainly, but in a particularly standoffish fashion. Miss Thyron would be much more amicable. Approachable. @ZincAboutIt

  37. To be honest I'm not quite sure what Zinc's refering to. I threw the idea of some antagonists into the pot when we brainstormed, as the central idea of rebuilding might be a bit hard to grasp for newer players, although I'm not even sure whether we have some new people around? If you've got an idea for a side plot I'd be happy to talk it over, see if it is something Temeria might be interested or not. ======== Would any of you be interested/ have a character available to meet mine at the Scholar’s Guild? @Rushu42 @mathiau @18th Shard @NerdyAarakocra

  38. As I understand it, Avatars are basically like the inverse of whatever harmony is. Harmony is multiple shards combined into one Intent (with arguable effectiveness), and avatars are when one shard splits into multiple intents. So if Ruin, Preservation, and Harmony can all have distinct godmetals, I think it stands to reason that different avatars of the same shard may as well.

  40. ~Lita; Rooftop Garden, the Dominion~ A wry smile twisted Lita's lips when Mac mentioned getting into spying "for the lifestyle." Most of her life spent spying was hardly as glamorous as it was these days - and even these days there was a fair bit of grit in the glitter, so to speak. She let the smile turn more genuine as Mac mentioned his yachts. Mac was generally known for his self-control and restraint these days, but yachts and fine suits seemed to be glaring weak points. Lita could empathize. Both were quite lovely. "I'm glad you have new ambitions already," Lita said, watching Mac's expression change at the mention of the 'previous department.' She'd have to go back through records on the old Alleymatics division, then. Definitely something worth knowing. "Any department would be lucky to have you at the helm. And I'm glad you managed to take advantage of dramatic overbudgeting for your own gain. If one can get away with such things, one rather ought to, I should think." That wasn't entirely true in Lita's opinion, but it was close enough. Not everyone was able to acquire things in the way she could, after all. You used the gifts you were given. "Would you prefer your old office returned to you, then? I'm certain I can get another made to specifications." @MacThorstenson

  41. Mac, Rooftop Garden "Well, yes, I do want it." Mac watched as her eyebrows raised, hinting at the surprise that must lay beneath. "Are you seeking to go in another direction? R&D does need a new Head, I suppose..." Mac shook his head, "No, the R&D department head will likely have a certain disrepute in the coming years. I don't want to tie my reputation for that. Frankly, I just don't like spying. I was into it for the lifestyle, not the work. Voidus was throwing ridiculous amounts of money at the department and I took advantage of it. Now that I've squirrelled away enough chrysts in various off world accounts, however, I can take the pay cut moving somewhere else." "But yes, I'm trying to find something else to do with my time besides lounge on yachts. I'm thinking about forming, or rather reforming a Department of Alleymatics." A brief frown crossed his face as he considered what had happened to the last one, but he brushed it aside and continued. "The previous department is almost certainly gone and dusted, so I figured I could step in." @ZincAboutIt

  43. The red Investiture of Trell implies some level of co-opted Investiture. But "Shardbabies" seem to be a far better combination, where the Investiture isn't corrupted but fused together into a single Tone. But Trell is red, which, as I said, meas corruption. It is, however, possible that it is an Avatar of Autonomy corrupted by Odium.

  45. I think the main hypothesis is Harmony is still creating Atium, or has some somewhere. I'd imagine he wouldn't let Marsh die once the atium he took in Era 1 runs out. That does lead to the question of what happens when atium is burned, something I'm still a bit confused on. Where does that power go? There's also the theory on the Ghostblood emblem being based on the Marewill flower (and we have canon art for it now which seems to support that - at least in this thread showing the swag pack, not sure where that's actually located).

  47. I just reread Dawnshard, and the and it reminded me the manner in which Lopen's Words are accepted bothers me, a lot. Whenever you see someone swear an ideal other than the first, it's a high stress situation where the power boost is needed. Twice, we see Lopen in a tight spot, say the words, and they not be accepted.... yet a short time later, talking about how they aren't accepted, they are, almost mocking him.

  48. I've wondered about this - obviously the Five Scholars explored very high levels of Heightening, and the priests of the Court of Gods probably know a fair amount they keep secret about Breaths, Heightenings, and Commands. For example, they possessed the technique for "wordless Command" as well as the proper Command and visualization for a Returned to pass along "stacked" Breath without giving away the underlying "Divine" Breath, which Susebron would have to know to be able to use the "temp space" method of partial Breath transfer (store all but 2,000 Breath into something, use the standard "My Breath become yours" Command to give that to Siri without dying, and then to reclaim the Treasure back to himself). Even without learning some more advanced "partial transfer" Command, which he also doesn't know. But, most or all of the senior priests were killed in Bluefingers' plot, and there are just two left of the original Five Scholars. So while Susebron might well WANT to raise Siri to the Fifth Heightening, he may not be ABLE to do so until they learn more somehow about Commands. ("A Command to give Breath but not the Divine one" is not the sort of thing you're likely to experiment with as a Returned, as you can never get it wrong and try again a second time...) If it's going to happen, it's most likely going to happen in the sequel to Warbreaker and we'll see either Vasher or a version of Vivenna who's gained "higher education" on Breath instructing Susebron on how to do it.

  49. Hope I don't lose you all as I read the book at a snail pace. I was gonna read a chapter yesterday, but instead ended up writing all day. I wrote 5k words in one day, pretty sure that's my record. Anyway, chapter 6 Kaladin becomes a bridgeman. I'm really waiting to see what happens with that spren, now we know her name, Syl. I'm curious to see what happens next with the bridgemen, although this book seems to jump between different situations every chapter instead of some kind of plot developing within a certain situation. I can only assume this is because things are still ramping up? Still waiting to find out why the Parshendi killed that king in the first place. Not sure how Kaladin got so lucky in this chapter. Everyone around him, in his row, got killed by the arrows, and he didn't even get a wound. Maybe Syl was diverting the arrows?
