  3. Preview season is upon us! Tor has released the first three chapters of the seventh Mistborn book (and the fourth and final book of the Wax and Wayne subseries), The Lost Metal, and will continue releasing new chapters every Monday at 12PM Eastern Time until the book comes out November 15th. The samples will be posted on Tor's website, and will be posted in both text and audio form, beginning with the prologue and chapters 1 and 2 earlier today. While Brandon has previously done readings of early drafts of these chapters, these are the (near) final versions of what will appear in the book, and chapter 2 is a bit longer, so it may be worth checking out even if you've already watched those. In case you haven't seen it already, here's the back cover blurb: And the cover: When it comes to our site, please limit discussion to the Spoiler Zone forums, where we have both Mistborn-only and full-Cosmere subforums. On our Discord, we similarly have made #tlm-mistborn-only and #tlm-cosmere channels under the new Recent Release Spoilers category, and have moved our #cosmere-mechanics channel there under the new name #tlm-cosmere-mechanics.

  5. I like this idea... that the seeds of their individual madnesses came from their rationale for ditching the Oathpact at Aharietiam Certainly could be seen in Nale's case, I agree. Kalak too could be similar (RoW spoilers): Not sure for the others though, and I too am tired

  6. Okay, so I had this idea after reading RoW. It's a little out there, but I was thinking it might be a way for invested people on Roshar to travel off world. Thanks to Navani's experiments, we know that stormlight and voidlight are connected to the tones of Honor and Odium, respectfully. Almost certainly the same of lifelight and Cultivation. I wonder if it's possible to transmit that in some way long distance, like a radio. Now, I don't that radios don't actually transmit the sound itself. The sound is encoded into radio waves that can be received and translated back into sound on the other side. Maybe if two gemstones were conjoined like span reeds, then a constant source of stormlight could be transmitted. Or maybe gemstones cut in a certain way could receive the tone sent out by a large gemstone transmitter or something, like car radios receiving a signal from a radio tower. Such a thing would need to be limited, only so much stormlight could flow through at a time, but a constant stream of stormlight could maybe act as an anchor to Roshar. Kind of an out there theory, like I said, but it could be a way to get stormlight, and possibly radiants, off of Roshar.

  7. ***disclamer*** I am basing this off what we see of him in the books. Kelsier to me seemed like someone who “would rather trust and be betrayed then never trust and never have friends at all”. He loves and cares for his team and has to be talked out of pushing himself too far to try and save people on several occasions. For example, when (forget his name) takes the army they were building and attacks, Kelsier was going to try and save them but gets told “you can’t save everyone kel” and he really takes that hard. He has no love for evil people and does not hesitate to eliminate them one way or another, but who thinks evil should not be eliminated? He is very ruthless in his methods at times, but he is living in a ruthless world. I think that is more of a commentary on just how bad things are on Scadrial and less on how bad Kelsier is. I guess I don’t really understand where all this “Kelsier is evil” or “Kelsier is a bad guy” comes from. The reputation he seems to have on this site is vastly different than what seems to be presented in the books. To me he seems like a man in a hard, rough world making hard, rough decisions. But despite all the hard things he has had to do, all the terrible things he has seen and had happen to him, he still choses to smile, to trust, and to love.

  8. LG89 Day 2: Kandra's Blood Kandra don't really bleed. They can, if they're usually doing it for show. Kandra can survive all kinds of mutilations, you see. ArVaal, though... the Thirds had used acid. It could melt through their skin in a way that wouldn't regenerate. When the group had found him there wasn't much left. Just bones, two spikes, and the fragments that made up the real kandra's blood. You couldn't accidentally kill a kandra that way. It just didn't happen. This was war. Araris Valerian was killed! They were a member of the Second Generation with a Blessing of Presence! The turn will end at 8:00 PM PDT (or 10:00 PM CDT) on Thursday, September 22nd. Player List:

  9. Hello all! Been a longtime lurker on the site, and have gotten much entertainment from watching all of you discuss theories. Finally decided to join the Shard! Became a Sanderson fan in Covid right before RoW, and have since read the stormlight archive 3 times. Looking forward to actually participating here now!

  10. 1. The Set were active even before Taravngian`s ascention (unless era 2 is more in the future than we thought). So if this theory is correct either they were founded with Rayse`s intervention or Odium came after the founding. 2. Red can be any corrupted investiture in the cosmere so a lot of invested creatures will probably have those eyes. 3. Odium is not the best shard for seeing the future. He is better than Honor but Cultivation is better. With Preservation`s plan in era 1 maybe Preservation (and Harmony) is also better than Odium. In conclusion I think that it is a valid theory but Trell=Autonomy is more likely (and maybe Odium is also involved).

  13. Disclaimer: I originally posted this theory as a response to another topic, I worked on it some more, but some of this post will be verbatum from that I was looking through everything Lift-related to try and make up my mind on what could explain... well Lift. While there's clearly something important weird about Lift's origin before her visit to the Nightwatcher, I don't think we have enough data to theorize about that, but I do have an idea what happened with the Nightwatcher, and, yeah, you read the title To show you I got there, I'll copy here the evidence that I found most relevant (I took notes notes Jasnah style) and then just summarize "my findings" and explain how I connected the dots. I'll be using Spoiler tags for spacing, and I bolded the snippets that I found most interesting, all the relevant info in the quotes is repeated in my final thoughts 1) WOBs on what Lift is\her origin 1) WOBs on the mechanics of Lifts powers 3) General info on Nightwathcer, Bondsmiths and multiple Naheel bond: So to summarize what's in the info I looked through and just some known facts: Lift is something very special only possible through an act of Cultivation, result of meddling with her spirit web. What she is and how she is however fits within a certain mechanic and is not a one-off thing, but Cultivation's experiment on her is a first on Roshar. Wyndle guesses she has a stronger connection to the spiritual realm, which makes sense in how for instance she can see Szeth's afterimage, and touch spren. This connection to the spiritual realm is probably related to how she is slightly different from other radiants (at least in how she would react to a dead shardblade). Still Wyndle bonded her as he would have a normal radiant, though the decision was made because she had been touched by Cultivation. She can only burn foods (not metals) and transforms the resulting energy as lifelight, with mechanics much like those of getting energy from digesting sugar. She does generate the investiture from the food, not quite like metals (allomancy) work though there's a similarity there. Finally, we know that she asked the Nightwatcher: I put this together with the fact that Bondsmiths can generate their respective lights for personal use, with not clear mechanics, and with the fact that the Nightwatcher is different from other spren, in how she's disconnected from human perception and thus more unchanging. So back my thesis: Lift has been bonded to the Nightwatcher since she was ten, and is already the third Bondsmith This explains how she can self-generate Lifelight, which as far as we know is only possible for the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith. We know that it is possible to bond multiple sprens, and we know that Cultivation is very capable of meddling with one's memories, so it's easily explainable how she could be bonded to both her and Wyndle without knowing it. With what we know about surges, it makes sense she can't do Bondsmith things beside istinctive Light generation until she's aware of what she can do. There's a lot of wiggle room on the details on how her Connection to the spiritual realm and not-aging, as we know Cultivation ultimatly gives boons and curses as she pleases, so anything is fair game. From a thematic perspective, the Nightwatcher's "untied to human perception" nature works well with Lift's boon request to be unchanging when everything else does. Tt would also make sense that the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith would have a stronger focus on the Cognitive realm and spren, as she is less connected to the Physical, this expelaining Lift's Connection with the Congitive realm. This could make a nice simmetry with the 3 bondsmiths being "more focused" on the three planes, Spiritual for Stormfather, Physical for Sibling, Cognitive for Nightwatcher. Of course this clashes with the simmetry between Shards and Lights, so it's just a thematic idea not a mechanic of their powers. In terms of mechanics we have to go with some wild theory, as she's supposed to be an "experiment that's never been tried before", so here it goes: Her bond is unique because it's a somewhat backwards Nahel Bond, so rather than the bond making the spren more tied to the Phyisical realm, it's Lift who grows more Connected and aware of the Spiritual. This would explain her special connection with the Spiritual realm and all that comes with it, and could be worked in the explanation of her 'not aging' Of course there's a number of reasons that could explain her not aging if you accept she's a Bondsmith plus Cultivation shenanigans. Bondsmiths' mechanics are not really clear, and supposed to be very Bondsmith-specific. I mean she burns Lifelight for breakfast for the Almighty's sake But that's it from me, what do you guys think? does this make any sense?

  14. I've seen some other questions about this, so I'm interested in community thoughts. In a few months, many of us will begin receiving swag boxes; nobody knows yet exactly what they will contain. I expect to get some things I don't especially want... but those things may be very valuable to another SanderFan. How is this situation best addressed? It looks as if Chaos and the mods will soon be announcing a ban on the use of this site to buy/sell merch, which is fine. Believe me, the last thing I want is for swag sales to cause any trouble here... and I can certainly envision the possibility of trouble. But the problem remains. How do we solve it? Are there other ways people here have regularly used to buy/sell/trade items? What options exist? Please discuss.

  15. Hi first post: I am playing with a theory that 8 of the shards are simple “actions” (for lack of a better word), and each share an emotionally tinted counterpart. I’m not sure how this related to a theory I view as essentially guaranteed, that the 16 shards are split into 4 groups along the intents of the dawnshards. Ruin: Odium Invention: Whimsy Valor: Ambition Honor: Devotion Preservation: Survival (not confirmed) Cultivation: Dominion Autonomy: ??? Endowment: Mercy One note on endowment/mercy… I think this may be a case of a shard(s) having a slightly “broader” Intent than the specific name would imply. I believe this is supported by the mechanics of Returned being brought back to life for specific purposes…. Perhaps something more along the lines of Legacy etc. additionally if you really wanted to stretch it, Mercy is holistically something along the lines of Blessing, Grace, or Compassion, which I think tracks with emotionally charged components of Endowment. Of course, could just be a mercy-killing pyscho… we will see. Let me know what y’all think. One edit note: this also might support why Roshar Spren are so similar to Sel Seon/Skaze. The Roshar Shards & Sel Shards are in some ways mirrors of each other, and that might be reflected in the magic manifestation.

  24. No worries. That yellow arrow on the lower right of a post is how you say Thank You. Also, when you read Warbreaker, I would recommend that you leave the annotations until after you finish the book (or for the first re-read of the novel). On Sanderson's website, the Warbreaker annotations have spoilers hidden when he's discussing things later in the book - but the eBook does not. Also, it can be a pain to back after finishing to uncover those spoilers, so it's just easier to save all of the annotations for the end (then it's almost like a review with extra goodies). Both the book and the annotations are available free on his website (linked above).

  27. I feel confident that I'm cleared off the xino vote? I don't know what the votecount was when Xino made his vote. I think his vote on Mat was when he was at 3 votes (shining/conq/Araris). I think, that while one of those might also be an Elim, I also think bussing the coinshot isn't the first choice for anyone. Definitely opens up more possibility for bookworm to be an Elim, but also there is the fact that the train on xino didn't really actually gain traction until almost EoD. ABOUT THE XINO VOTES Xino's first vote on him was from Shining, as a initial poke vote you have to assume, so that's pretty NAI. my first thought was that it was most likely not an Elim because of Xino's being a coinshot, but as the cycle went on, the vote never changed. Not only that, but when Shining popped in later, at a time when Xino had been tied with Mat and Stick, they didn't take their vote off, even though it was a poke vote and would have been normal to change. The second vote didn't happen until 4 hours before EoD, and was Matrim. this moved the votecount from being Araris (3): Stick, Illwei, Wiz Wiz (2): Mat, Xino to Araris (3): Stick, Illwei, Wiz xino (2): Shining, Mat Think it's interesting that Wiz was most likely on Araris for pure preservation, and had little to say otherwise. After Mat took his vote off of Wiz and moved it on to xino, Wiz came back to thread, took his vote off of Araris, and then left again. Before the next moves onto Xino, Both me and Wiz take our votes off of Araris, and the main wagons shift again. xino (2): Shining, Mat Stick (2): Araris, JNV Matrim (2): Illwei, Kasimir I find this interesting, because I previously expected to find that the Araris movement onto Xino was for self preservation, but that's not the case, obviously, because at the time when Araris voted on Xino, Araris himself only had one vote. @Araris Valerian is there a reason you moved onto xino? My impression was it was to stop a tie, but for all your commentary about explaining things earlier, you didn't explain your vote on a flipped Elim. When conq makes his vote the votecount went from xino (3): Mat, Shining, Araris Mat (1): Kas Stick (1): JNV Araris (1): Stick Kasimir (1): xino TUN (1): Conq to xino (4): Mat, Shining, Araris, Conq Mat (1): Kas Stick (1): JNV Araris (1): Stick Kasimir (1): xino Which was the least influential vote, ignoring both my an matrim's votes made later (when i was unaware of the votecount, and I assume he was too, at a level). Summary? Mat, Me, and Araris are the most likely villagers on the Xino train. Conq is the most likely Elim, and Shining is a second choice if there has to be an Elim on the train. ABOUT XINO'S POSTS that Xino's last post of the cycle was originally exactly: Which is what prompted me and mat to move back onto Xino, and then explains mat's post after that Reminder to players that if you make an edit always make an edit note, not just rewrite over an old message. The last minute change to Kas does make me think that Kas is more likely to be an Elim. I'm getting distracted while working on a third thing so I'm just gonna post this now and come back later

  31. You might be able to delete a post if it has had no replies, or you can click on "report post" and in the description as a Mod to delete the post for you. Did you have any specific questions? Also, another technique (besides the Coppermind) is to go to the Arcanum to look at Words of Brandon (Compilations of essays, blogs, annotations, and answered questions/RAFOs) about a specific topic. For example, if you wanted to look up information on Dakhor you would search the Dakhor Tag. You can organize by oldest, newest or relevance (though that is more for keywords than Tags - more below) - and what I did when I was worried about spoilers was start at the bottom and scroll toward the top because the bottom of each post in Arcanum lists the tags that apply at the bottom. In this way, if a post had a tag I was avoiding spoilers for, I would not read it and continue to the next one up. If it is a tag with a lot of posts, like AonDor (62 posts) you can then further refine by adding a keyword (such as Chasm Line) to get the posts that deal specifically with that intersection of topics (2 posts with AonDor tags reference the Chasm Line)

  33. Broadly the Lore (at it's surface level) can be found at the Coppermind Wiki (link at the top of the page). The Depths are the Arcanum collection of the Word of Brandon (the rest of the Lore from Q&A's and interviews and whatnot). Both will contain significant spoilers to the other Cosmere works, so proceed with extreme caution until you read the rest of the works. In particular Id recommend avoiding anything about Scadrial/Mistborn or Stormlight Archive, as it is pretty easy for them to spoil a few pretty awesome twists and surprise reveals and whatnot. For Elantris and Emeror's Soul, the planet in question is Sel: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Sel

  38. I think he had to have met him on Braize. In RoW epigraph 80 Kalak says the Fused and Heralds have been fighting for 7,000 years. We know from OB CH. 38 that Honor and Cultivation bound Odium to Braize and then the Heralds bound the Fused to Braize kind of emulating what H&C had done. Odium's been on Braize for at least 7,000 years, well over 1,000. If Hoid was referring to an event 9,000 years ago he wouldn't have thought "over 1,000". Brandon was asked a while ago if Hoid had been to Braize and he RAFO's but in doing so implies the answer to that is extremely important. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/221/#e6196 It's a non-answer, but given Hoid's thought about meeting Rayse over 1,000 years prior it seems the answer is yes. One thing I don't understand is why Hoid is so afraid of Rayse finding him in the present timeline if he went to Braize where Odium is at his most powerful not that long ago. "I came to your land to chase an old acquaintence, but I end up spending most of my time hiding from him instead." - WoK ch. 57. I assume that's referencing Rayse. They knew each other pre-Shattering and were friends. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/136/#e2101 Wit is also dodging the 17th Shard, but Frost is the old friend running that group and he never leaves Yolen per Brandon. Wit wouldn't come to Roshar looking for him. Maybe Wit made a deal with Rayse 1,000+ years ago and then went back on it which is why he's worried now. My understanding is Wit only seeks out Odium after the contract is agreed to because he wrote protections for himself in the contract (he includes his name in it according to the RoW epilogue).

  39. I just finished rereading Emperor's Soul this weekend and I think it is among Brandon's finest works. In a short story, Brandon is able to deeply develop three or four different characters (Shai, Gaotona, Ashravan, and Frava). He weaves in this interesting magic system, and explains it well in the context of the story. He does a lot of philosophizing on the nature of art and artistry. And all throughout it's a story with some real stakes and tensions as well. It doesn't hit the same emotional notes for me that Stormlight or Mistborn do, but in terms of just sheer quality it might be his finest work for how much it is able to pack into such a small package.

I decided yesterday that I wanted to make a board game. Some buddies of mine (namely @Knight of Iron and @Butt Ad Venture) decided that they were interested, so we started conceptualizing and came up with some ideas. Here's what we got so far: We want it to be a fantasty RPBG, with lots of realms and magic and monsters and all that good stuff You'll have a character with which you'll go on quests to find treasure, items, and unlock new abilities Elephants Here's the doc I'm really bad at explaining things so here's the discord for more information.

  41. I think it's Brandon's best work that's not Stormlight or Mistborn Era 1. The way it tackles its themes (like the nature of art) is very thought-provoking, and it also makes them matter - because these themes (and the disagreements about them) mean a lot to the characters and their relationships (Gaotona and Shai, in particular). Shai is also one of Brandon's most nuanced characters. She feels very human to me. It's also just a well-rounded story and shows that great fantasy with outstanding world-building and interesting magic doesn't have to be huge and epic - you can accomplish all of that with just one room, if you're really good at it. Also, while I adore Brandon's twists, I really enjoyed reading a story of his that's suspenseful while not relying on reveals as much as most of his other work. It was kind of refreshing.
