  1. Well, I'm officially running for student government president! The speeches are virtual this year, but me and my campaign manager (my friend that reads Machiavelli in his free time) are playing that to our advantage. There are some jewels in my speech. At one point, I say "I'll fight for sports", and then I shoot a three-pointer basketball shot backwards. Then I say "I'll fight for music!" while holding my cello. Then, "I'll fight for the clubs" and move a chess piece. "Checkmate!" I'm also going to "drive" this school to success (said while I drive off). The whole speech is said with me in my suit, by the way. Walking around town in the whole attire Though it's going to be a tough race, I think. I'm running against three other people and two of them have more connections in the lower grades than I do. But I'm hoping that my speech is strong enough to get enough of the underclassmen to vote for me. Anyone have any experience/advice to share?

  2. see I realised that recently I've been focusing on entirely the wrong things. And it's degraded my mental state quite a bit and made me feel vulnerable. So to make myself prioritise and ignore all the negative and bad things I'm gonna challenge myself to read a book a day. So that means tonight I will finish the last 100 pages I have left of the first witcher book and by next Friday I should have finished the entire series. Oh wish me luck

  3. I was considering how seriously Hallendren takes its art, to the point that they've even got things like the synchronized gardening orchestra, and a realization struck me. The fifth heightening makes you completely immune to most toxins, and in real life we have an example of food that's fancy by virtue of narrowly avoiding being deadly poisonous in the form of fugu. So what if Hallendren has chefs specially trained in preparing delicious food using poisonous ingredients that can't be safely eaten by people with too little Breath. Poison ivy salads and deadly nightshade berry sorbets and so on. Actually, expanding upon that now that I'm thinking about it, people of the fifth heightening are immune to diseases too. So while you almost certainly wouldn't want to consume rotten meat, because it's going to taste bad and I'd be willing to bet Breath affects your ability to taste just like your other senses, there's really no risk to you if you want to try eating raw meats or dairy or so on. At any rate, I doubt there's enough potential customers of the fifth heightening or above to sustain a chef even if they charge extravagant prices of every poisonous meal, so it's probably something that certain master chefs learn above and beyond their other culinary expertise.

  4. So our city was already under lockdown, but a couple days ago our entire neighbourhood became a high-risk area. Nobody is allowed out of their apartments, and there's mandatory testing every day. Food has to be delivered. It's irritating, but not a huge inconvenience to me, since I don't go out much anyway. It does feel a little dystopian sometimes though - there was a knock on the door today, and it was a bag of vegetables from the government. dystopian. hah. that's not dystopian. Being woken up at twelve in the night to do COVID testing is dystopian. China's Zero-Covid Approach Explained as Chengdu Lockdown Is Extended - The New York Times

And along with bendalloy and cadmium for time manipulation. And, I'm a ballroom dancer so I would absolutely LOVE to have pewter to enhance my grace while dancing. Considering all this I think I would go full mistborn.

  20. *Hugs* I know it doesn't really help, but some people are just annoying. You have to learn to live with them, even if they really, really get on your nerves. Also, sometimes people act like that because they are really stressed about something, or are having a rough time. Regardless, *Hugs again* you'll do fine, you will persevere. I believe you will.

  22. In word counts, Wheel of Time is actually still roughly double the length of Dresden Files - 4.4 million versus 2.3 million. Stormlight will presumably reach 2.3 million as well with book 5. Some book lengths differ widely, and even page count often isn't reliable because of formating (like Stormlight books having 400 words per page, 250-300 being normal). I actually believe it's hard to find a series longer than Wheel of Time (although Malazan easily surpasses it if you count all spin-offs, sequels, etc.). Stormlight might come close when it ends, but only if he keeps up the length of those

  23. Tried to think of a way to pretend we won but there isn’t a way to do that, oh well Gonna save most of my comments and things for the Aftermath but I will mention that Shining had a jewel, so if you hadn’t used yours this would have been a 50/50. Good instincts. — I made multiple silly assumptions this game which lessened our chances towards winning but I’ll again leave the specifics for the official aftermath. But I really enjoyed this game. An early kudos to Shining for being an awesome teammate :D.

  24. Coooool, that was so fun to spectate! loved the cats invading mandos. ill post the tragedy of Darth Mat the Wise here sometime soon. edited to add: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Mat the melkor? No? I thought not. It’s not a story the village would tell you. It’s an elim legend. Darth Mat was an elim so powerful and so wise, he could use his powers to influence the gm to create… another elim. He had such a knowledge of the Elims, he could even convert those he knew were also powerful… into elims. He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power… which, eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. This apprentice did a lot, but alas, the village killed him in his sleep, for he was nocturnal. Ironic. he could save others from the town… but not himself. ^^^thanks mat for correcting some stuff : p

  25. The thing about Fugu is that you have to get a small amount of the poison. The whole point is the get the tingle and numbing sensation - just in small enough quantities that the adverse effects are minimized. Kinda like spicy food: Capsaicin, the chemical responsible for the spicy heat of chilis is, technically, a poison. It's just that the small quantity found naturally in chili peppers is survivable (the tingles, sweating and heat is your body's response to the poison). If somebody was already Immune to poison, then they would not get any of these reactions. So, then, what would be the culinary benefit to eating them? Extreme snobbiness (I eat this because I can and you can't)?

  37. "Now in his heart Melkor most hated the Eldar, both because they were fair and joyful and because in them he saw the reason for the arising of the Valar, and his own downfall. Therefore all the more did he feign love for them and seek their friendship, and he offered them the service of his lore and labour in any great deed that they would do. The Vanyar indeed held him in suspicion, for they dwelt in the light of the Trees and were content; and to the Teleri he gave small heed, thinking them of little worth, tools too weak for his designs. But the Noldor took delight in the hidden knowledge that he could reveal to them; and some hearkened to words that it would have been better for them never to have heard. Melkor indeed declared afterwards that Fëanor had learned much art from him in secret, and had been instructed by him in the greatest of all his works; but he lied in his lust and his envy, for none of the Eldalië ever hated Melkor more than Fëanor son of Finwë, who first named him Morgoth; and snared though he was in the webs of Melkor’s malice against the Valar he held no converse with him and took no counsel from him. For Fëanor was driven by the fire of his own heart only, working ever swiftly and alone; and he asked the aid and sought the counsel of none that dwelt in Aman, great or small, save only and for a little while of Nerdanel the wise, his wife." - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, "Of Feanor and the Unchaining of Melkor" Melkor has been freed! QF62 has officially begun! Get your votes and actions in! Also note some important changes to the rules; namely, Melkor has lost C1 exe immunity and has 1 conversion; he now permanently possesses Craft and Cunning; and the Sons of Feanor will now share an anonymous doc rather than a group PM if they chance upon a Silmaril. There is an exe today. PMs are open. Remember that these are one-on-one, and must include both myself and @Elbereth, the Queen of the Stars herself, who has graciously agreed to IM. You may also go to her with any concerns about the game. I am sorry for the 100% Tolkien writeup, as well as the lack of characters for those of you who requested them. I will seek to remedy that tomorrow, as I should have some time with the holiday. Spectators should be receiving a PM shortly. I blame my disorganisation on a hectic evening. Good luck! 41. 1. I wish Rlain is the one who bonded the Sibling. 2. I...don't feel much about the Jasnah+Wit relationship, I wasn't even aware of it being a romantic relationship until the scene they share. And I still don't think it's going to get anywhere. 3. I feel like we spent too much time with Shallan&Adolin in part 2. I wasn't really that interested in her secret, I was more like "Oh, she had another secret, whatever" I just want her to remember it and get it over with. I was more than frustrated with the time she spent searching for the spy, it just doesn't add much to the story. When they finally got into Lasting Integrity, I thought things are finally starting to speed up, and then... we got switched to another POV. 4. I don't care about Navani. Imo she's just a lighteyes who happened to be kind of interested in fabrial, and because she's married to important people, she gets to study them. Yeah, that's okay, I guess. But it's not okay when she gets a bunch of screen time to rant about how this and that works, I don't really care, and I skipped most of them. And she's so...ignorant. You would think someone this old would know that Raboniel is planning to make anti-stormlight, she didn't. And claims to know about politics plus wishes to be a scholar. When I was reading that, I thought after she make anti-voidlight, she would make anti-stormlight. I thought she thinks there's some great use for the two anti-light. 5. This might be a plot hole, but it might not be. I think they found the third node way too quickly. When reading it, it felt like they found the node the second Sibling told Navani about the spot. Unless they have some way to instantly communicate, and Raboniel's soldier just so happen to pass the spot, there's no way they could have done that so fast.
