  3. What if Voidbinding is a magic system defined by a way to gain powers, rather than by a set of powers? In that case, Renarin and anyone hosting Yelig-nar would be both a Voidbinder and a Surgebinder - they would gain Surgebinding through Voidbinding, in the same way that (Mistborn Hero of Ages spoilers) Voidbinding is historically known, there are legends about it, yet Sja-anat never corrupted/Enlightened Radiant spren before. So past Voidbinders couldn't have worked like Renarin, by bonding with a corrupted/Enlightened Radiant spren. Perhaps they bonded with the Unmade directly, Yelig-nar style? Maybe Death Rattles are a form of Voidbinding? Ten "levels" of Voidbinding might not mean ten specific powers -- Perhaps the nine Unmade plus the tenth level being based on lesser voidspren or Enlightened spren?

  5. I am still, even now, in awe of the books that are Dune. Frank Herbert is by far one of the most amazing writers and imaginers of all time. the world he creates, the plots he weaves, just MMMM. the politics, the ecology, the religions, it just blends so wonderfully. im trying children of dune for the third time as I couldn't read it the first two because it fell apart for me. im finding it much better than before. yet somehow I still love Dune Messiah the most of all of them. Dune Messiah is fundamentally the opposite of its predecessor, Dune. Dune Messiah shows the falling of the moon that is Paul Atriedes that was so well built up in Dune. it shows his fall from the high pedestal that he built for himself. in the words of Frank Herbert himself, paraphrased "there could be no greater peril for the fremen than to fall into the hands of a hero" but I digress, Dune is the pinnacle of sci fi.

  6. As you wish For the whole discussion I'm only going to go by what the Jedi do in the movies. Simply put here jedi can't win, Radiants can take hits where Jedi can't, and they can activly heal from all such attacks, before we even factor surges into account. Shardplate is heavy enough that using the force on it would take too much effort and distract the jedi from the fight long enough for the Radiant to kill them. I don't see a big difference between sith and jedi for this comparison, Shardplate blocks lightning, and none of the other abilities realy come into play. Now here we have an intresting one, assuming that the jedi know that breaking the center crystal will kill the host, and assuming that they are strong enough in the force to do some while maintaining distance between them they should win. Otherwise I say a toss up with a slight edge to Yelig-nar. That includes Nale, so he wins. Radiant, given that Shardplate absorbes lightning I'm going to say that blaster bolts will have a minimal impact on them, and the radiant can cut them down as they will. If we assume that plate treats blasters like bullets then they still win because droids have the inteligence of week old bread. Without shardplate's ability to heal, stormlight and surges the shardbearer is much more manageable for the padawan than a radiant, however they still can't be hit but have to hit their opponent multiple times, so I'd say Shardbearer, but much closer than any of the other ones.

  11. I think this is a misinterpretation of the original WoB: The question is biased and assumes a mechanical means, that BS at first doesn't address, then RAFOs. (see below) City Age: Building Elantris So this shows that AonDor was used to build the city; which means the people that would become the modern Aonic peoples had to experience the Shaod to gain the magic. Timing We know that the Shaod is linked to the city, but correlation =/= causation. So, if AonDor existed first, then the Shaod had to exist first. But if the city may have been built before the Splintering of Devotion, then I think it's likely that the Shaod was used by Aona to select people that exemplified Devotion (and therefore had a connection to her**). I think that after the city was linked to the post Shaod state to provide the amplified power; so when the land changed (and therefore the magic changed) the amplification from the city became a reduction instead because the Connection was broken. However, I don't think the city actually had anything to do with continuing the Shaod selection that started with Aona. I do think it was possible that after the splintering the city was modified to ensure a continued Connection to the Dor that suddenly shifted to the Cognitive Realm. **Note: Examples we see in Elantris:

It's definitely because the acronym spells Aon, and I'm more familiar with Aonic magic than Aetheric.(I've read Elantris but not AoN.Anyone else have/had this problem?

  14. Demaren Technotic braced himself carefully on a ladder to put the finishing touches on the sign outside his shop. He started to maneuver down the ladder with a sense of satisfaction at finishing it so quickly, despite his mostly missing leg. The sign was simple, just the name Technotic above the image of a mechanical hand. He was lucky he had found a building in good enough condition to be a simple renovation job, especially with some hired help. His face curved in a wry smile as he got his one foot off the ladder and used it to stay balanced while he grabbed his cane. Even in this strange new place, gold was a standard, though not as valuable as it had been to the Epics. His smile changed to a grimace at the thought. There were Epics here, too, and people with powers they claimed were entirely different. Those ones at least tended to be a bit less arrogant, he had even hired some who could make themselves impossibly strong to help with the renovation. They had wanted payment in pewter, of all things. He wouldn’t need them after today, the renovation was finished, finally. Once they had taken the ladder, they were free to go, and he would be glad to have them gone. They made him nervous. At least the soulcaster device had made it easy to pay them. He had been careful to keep it hidden, once he learned how valuable they were. Understandable, really. They were quite useful. He made his way in the front door and into the front shop. The front room was clean, with a few chairs and a large semicircular desk built so that he could sit at it and reach everything. Behind the desk was a door leading into his laboratory and workshop, which took up the rest of the first floor. In the very back, hidden behind a door, was a set of stairs leading to the top floor. The building he had chosen was two stories high, dwarfed by the other buildings on the street. The top floor, to his mind, was a spacious flat. Having a bedroom, a bathroom, and a kitchenette, it was much bigger than anything he had had when working for the Epics. He sat down at the desk in a chair he had built to brace him properly with a missing leg, and saw through the front window his hired help take the ladder and leave. Demaren picked up a pair of thin gloves with small interwoven circuits and wires from the desk and put them on. He tapped on the arm of his glasses, pulling up virtual schematics projected on the lenses, which with the gloves he could manipulate as he wished. A faint smile lit up his face, and he got to work while waiting for a customer. *** OOC: so this is Technotic's shop, he makes bespoke equipment and various technology items you may find useful. I am willing to just post here myself, I want to show and develop Demaren's character. Pricing will depend on what you want, factoring in how complicated it is, and what items are needed. He will do some Fabrial tech, but that will take longer and may have uncertain results. He will also make bulk metal for a decent fee.

These are all so far rough drafts of songs you are hearing, recorded directly by my phone from my electric piano, so their quality isn't the greatest and I have a few errors here and there. Hopefully, you will all enjoy it otherwise. (And hopefully, I can successfully upload them.) The song recorded on video, called the "Mistborn Suite", is meant to be a collection of themes for the first Mistborn trilogy overall. Next is a song I made, titled "First Waltz", is based on Vin and Elend dancing together for the first and only time of their lives in Hero of Ages. After that is a song made by request to take place during the scene in Final Empire when Kelsier fights Bendal the Inquisitor in the Square, tentatively titled "Fight Scene". And then a song to take place during what happens directly after it, with "The Lord Ruler's Arrival". Directly followed by a "Lament for Kelsier". There is a lot more where these came from, but I haven't recorded or saved them yet. But more is to come! I hope you enjoy! mistborn suite.MOV Vin and Elend Second Draft.m4a Kelsier vs Inquisitor.m4a The Lord Ruler's Arrival.m4a Lament For Kelsier.m4a

  16. Mistborn vs jedi Fun idea, 4 pages of constant arguing much fun. now let’s bring it over here 1) each order of radiant 1v1 a Jedi (use averages not kaladin, or anakin) 2) each order 1v1 a sith 3) a person swallows Yelig-nar and must fight a Jedi with no practice 4) a person is practiced with yelig-nar but the Jedi is aware of the abilities (to make it fair) 5) the best of the best from both sides face off who wins 6) radiants vs droid army who wins, why? bonus round! Regular shardbearer vs padawan ground rules: 1a) lightsabers and shardblades bounce off each other, as per a WoB that I’m sure @Frustration can provide. 1b) sense shardblades and plate are made of nearly the same stuff, plate will react as being hit with a blade when struct with a lightsaber. 2) no fighting in one universe or the other, 3rd party world for our entrainment. (This doesn’t include how the force might work within the cosmer discussions) 3) give reason why/why not one side would win. ex: limited stormlight, higher durability, better healing

  31. Two bits of news for you today! Firstly, Brandon will be doing a spoiler stream tomorrow at 6pm Mountain Time on his YouTube channel. We weren't sure if there would even be one this month--he has tried to do spoiler streams in June and December--but here it is! You can post and vote for questions in this Reddit thread. In other news, Dynamite has announced on its Indiegogo campaign for the White Sand omnibus today a delay on the printing for the omnibus. Instead of the original June/July timeframe they had initially announced, it appears that the printer has pushed them back for getting things like the deluxe slipcase ready. This has resulted in the physical books pushed back to shipping to October. The books are finished, with their designs all approved, fortunately. Despite the book's complete state, digital editions for the omnibus will go out in August. It is somewhat amusing how late the English version of the omnibus is, considering the Spanish edition of the White Sand omnibus came out in print and digitally in May, but hey, not much Dynamite can do about it at this stage. Dynamite also discussed how to purchase the omnibus if you missed the Indiegogo campaign. Preorders are starting on Dynamite's site, but the first edition print run will focus on the Indiegogo backers, with few additional copies. However, eventually the omnibus will be available in normal retail channels, but those will happen sometime in 2023.

  33. This is what I meant by "2-D". I guess "projection" would be a better term. I was kind of mixing up terminology. Physical is a series of spheres separated by space, Cognitive is a series of projections of spheres stitched together, and Spiritual is a point. Don't know how to describe Spiritual dimensionally, as it's not clear how time works there. Foresight suggests that time is not the same there but it is not clear if the Realm itself is outside time.

  34. Agree on the inconsistency. In principle Jedi council member who went to direct combat shouldn't have been that easy to kill. I would point out that on Mistborn side, people bring up Fullborn as literally unstoppable killing machines based on their theoretical powers, yet the only one we have actually seen went out quite easily. So for the purpose of my argument I took just the powers as is. They regularly use those powers in lightsaber duels? So yes they do use it in combat? And regarding emotions, Sith use lightsaber form Dun Moch, which utilizes taunts and mental attacks to throw opponent off-guard (in Legends at least) so Jedi could be used to such attack. I'd also argue that Jedi telekinesis requires much less effort than what Mistborn can achieve with metals. And even regular people can resist rioting or soothing, i.e. strong willed individuals are not that much affected see Vin for example. Duralumin enhanced would break even such people though. Also if the person with force was a Jedi, soothing would most likely help them focus, not hinder them, as they are meant to be and stay serene. Vice versa for a Sith, who would be 'supercharged' by rioting. Well, it is relatively new. Technically both Revan and Exile used it quite often, and on multiple targets at once. So did Kylo Ren, and I think Vader as well in recent comics. The main issue on that is certain lack of consistency, in that powers are being added over time, and sometimes they retroactively create plot-holes in scenes (i.e. if Force user can catch a ship, why did Obi-Wan not hold down Jango's ship in AOTC? ) From that perspective, this entire discussion is potentially meaningless, unless bounds are agreed upon. My stance is that I take powers that are demonstrably learnable (e.g. not psychometry) and assuming Jedi knows them, as most Jedi demonstrate multiple abilites. If those powers were demonstrated by a padawan, all the better. Then I can assume Jedi/Sith are strong willed, and rioting and soothing has less of an actual effect through self-control which is possible, as Vin demonstrates in TFA. Ok, Jedi simply holds the lightsaber in hand through force, or guides it through air using Force and slices Mistborn in half. Not to mention lightsaber does not have to be made out of metal at all. Actually, control over emotions is not necessary to use force, Jedi do that to insulate themselves from the Dark Side. Disrupting their focus would make it more difficult, unless you pushed them too far and they tapped Dark Side, where those same emotions are actually helping them (see e.g. Luke in ROTJ, Rey in TROS). If that force user is Sith, it would go even worse for Mistborn.

  38. Having read through the thread, I have to be on the side of the Jedi, barring exceptional circumstances average Jedi beats average Mistborn ~9/10 . The reason is, that nearly anything Mistborn can do, Jedi can and sometimes better + Jedi have powers Mistborn don't (most notably they effectively have F-steel + ability to slow people down at distance, and yes both of these powers were demonstrated by Padawans as young as 12, so no experts). Caveat is that I assume that that Force precognition cancels out with Atium, as Atium shows you what opponent will do, so you can react. However Force precognition gives you information on danger couple of seconds into future, and allows you to adjust to avoid it (see Chiss navigators using it to safely move through hyperspace). So since Force precognition allows you to adjust your actions thanks to knowledge of future, it should lead to splitting of future shadows. (Alternative and much more funny possibility is that the Atium shadow does not split, but simply changes whenever Mistborn changes his mind about future course of action. That would be quite confusing.) Now with the biggest elephant out of the room, steel+iron are discount telekinesis, so Jedi have advantage there. Admittedly, Jedi typically don't fly around (though there are some that can) but that is (in my mind) more than compensated by the fact they have freedom of moving objects how they wish + don't need to be heavier then the object. I think basic restrictions (i.e. you cannot push on metals inside someones body) would still apply, so no pulling on metal filings in teeth or piercing, much less trace metals in body (which is out of scope of every Mistborn we have seen, exception being only Vin+Mists). Powerful soothing or rioting could throw Jedi out of balance, but Jedi have a mind trick, which is more versatile tool of a more direct application. Copper and Bronze would be irrelevant, as they function strictly on Investiture pulses, so Jedi would register as either a un-living object or as regular being. Cadmium is irrelevant, but Bendalloy could be useful for quick repositioning at a distance or for cancelling some of Jedi abilities. Pewter is the one metal where Jedi has no direct competitor, however Jedi does not have to be human and a lot of species are stronger or faster then humans, so for simplicity assuming human, Mistborn have advantage of strength. Duralumin is a wild card, but if Mistborn uses it and does not win, they are left without metals for couple of second which would allow Jedi victory. On the other hand, Jedi could use Force Stasis to freeze Mistborn in place for couple of second, close the distance in less then a second with Force Speed and win. Or they could you the mind trick to tell Mistborn to throw away all vials with metals. Or they could directly grab them with telekinesis and choke them out (if we allow Jedi = force user). I think the only way Mistborn could win is if they hit Jedi with a powerful soothing or rioting (duralumin empowered) from a distance which is greater than what Jedi can act on, and then quickly strike a killing blow. If Mistborn cannot do that, or the soothing/rioting fails to have desired effect, they won't win, since shot coins are countered either by lightsaber, or telekinesis, or force stasis or force speed, taking away the one long range option of Mistborn.

  40. The fact of the matter is that Jedi simply outclass Mistborn in every way. Jedi can push on objects that aren't metal, don't get pushed back if they push on objects bigger than themselves, can move objects in more directions than just away from or towards their center of mass. Atium won't work against them because Jedi have precognitive abilities, and their abilities still work even against other people who can see the future. Emotional allomancy won't work they are trained to control their emotions. Lightsabers have greater reach than daggers, and are bright and loud weapons so tin and pewter are useless. Duralumin might be intresting but a steelpush can simply be deflected away from the jedi and the Mistborn just wasted their metal. On the other hand Mistborn have to fight an opponent who has all of their advantages but none of their weaknesses. So Jedi win no questions asked.

  41. I put what I did, but I actually think this would depend on the Jedi's and the Mistborn's skill level. If you had Yoda against a newly snapped Mistborn who barely had any training, Yoda would win. But if you had Vin from Hero of Ages against some random Jedi who just passed the trials, then Vin would win. If you have two equally skilled individuals duking it out, it comes down to luck, random advantages, and the terrain and surroundings. Now, what would happen if you had two force sensitive lightsaber-wielding Mistborn pitted against each other...

  45. Division will almost certainly burn organics. In our world, breaking atomic bonds requires an input of energy (activation energy) followed by a release of some amount of energy. If Division is using Investiture to replace the activation energy, now all the energy can be released into the system. This energy is given off as heat. This is why we sweat and how mammals can be warm-blooded. If all these bonds were released at once a tremendous amount of heat would be produced. This would flash-boil water out of the body and allow the remaining dried tissue to ignite quickly.

  46. Yup I agree to all of this.. Shallan and her mental space is much more messed up than I had realised earlier.. Personally, I think instead of getting better, to me it feels like she is degrading with each book. To the point, that I have serious concerns if she really will be able to pull through all of her problems and if she really can combine all of her personas.. It greatly disturbs me that she suppresses so many things not only from her childhood but recent events.. She never processed what she learnt about helaran, her brother and how he died at the hands of Kaladin, she never confronted her failures as veil in Kholinar and she seems to have suppressed the whole member of the ghostbloods thing too using veil which is extremely dangerous and stupid on her part. I think soon she will realise like she had in twok, that she should have gone to Jasnah about the ghostbloods. Jasnah probably hates them after all they tried to kill her but she is too smart to understand the importance of a spy in their ranks that she might actually be a great help to shallan in this regard. Shallan and her whole arc has been very difficult to read for me in OB because she really regresses in OB once Jasnah comes back. In Wor, she had taken up the mantle of leadership and had such great achievements.. I, for one, would have never thought she would reveal to Dalinar about being a radiant. That was real character growth for her. But in OB, she is just trying to avoid her responsibilities, instead trying to be a spy, learning to drink.. So, while Kaladin and shallan shared a moment, a real powerful and intimate moment, I never saw it heading anyway especially since we saw that shallan was determined to suppress it all. Other than that, Kaladin might find her method for coping interesting but I think he would have soon realised that it is not his cup of tea. He can not and will not run away from his responsibilities. They are incompatible at a very basic level. I also have sincere concerns regarding her relationship with Adolin too but for his sake, I hope it works out.
