  1. I just realized I told Discord but I didn't tell the Shard yet - I GOT A JOB! My first! It's at a bookstore/gifts place, and so far I really like it. It's still work, but the other employees are cool and the store itself is really awesome, exactly my kind of place. My newly earned income is going to hate me, though, because I want to buy so much there

  2. Day Four I am definitely looking forward to coming back to this writeup. Steeldancer has been killed! They were a Confederation Loyalist! Drake Marshall was attacked, but survived! Haelbarde has died! They were a Confederation Loyalist! _Stick has been killed! They were a Confederation Loyalist! There will be an Interrogation during this Day turn. There is no vote minimum (though no one is removed if no one votes), and tied votes result in a random tied player getting Interrogated. As a reminder, you can grab one item from the Stockpile during the Day. Though this will be announced in the writeup for the next Night. PMs are coming as soon as we can get them out to y'all. @Szeth_Pancakes If you do not post this turn, you will either be replaced by a pinch hitter or removed by the inactivity filter Stockpile Player List This turn will end at 8 pm CST on Sunday, February 27th. As a heads up, N4 will need to be longer than normal due to some fun stuff going on with my schedule.

  3. Hi guys, sorry about my recent mean-spirited SU (the one about when cosmere movies/tv shows come out). I won't make any excuses, it was thoughtless and not very nice. I don't ever want to exclude anyone or cultivate an exclusionary environment. Thanks to the mods for calling me out and keeping the shard awesome :)

  4. So. I’ve had a super bad week for a number of reasons, one of which being that despite going to sleep around 6-7:30, I simply couldn’t feel rested. I was exhausted 24/7. So we went to the doctor and did some blood work and…. Well. A healthy person’s vitamin D should be at 30. Mine was at 13.

  5. So, I took a shower at around 12 to 12:30am last night because I knew I needed one and I didn’t want to wake up earlier than normal just to take one. I got out at around 1am, and my brain is hopping all over the place just wanting to do something, and I knew that I wouldn’t get some sleep unless I fulfilled some creative urges for a few minutes. A few minutes turned into an hour, and I made the pfp I have rn. Thing is: Even though I got about two hours of sleep, I feel fine––great, even––and am still filling those creative urges which is why Guard’s pfp is similar to mine, cos.. yeah, that was me. It’s not like I have any schoolwork due today, nor do I have to go anywhere, so I could literally just go to sleep… but I haven’t, and I know I should, but I can’t lol.

  6. There are a few theories I've seen that propose Roshar will be destroyed at the end of either book 5 or book 10 of the Stormlight Archive. While that certainly would be a twist, and I agree there are hints that this may happen, I disagree - I think Roshar is much more likely to survive, and will continue to be important throughout the Cosmere. (Please note that I am still learning Hebrew, so take the following as being from someone who is still learning on this topic) Roshar has a strong Hebraic influence, with many names referencing Hebrew words, such as the various types of Fused (such as the Shanay-im, the Fused who can fly, referencing the Hebrew word for Heaven and the sky, Shamayim - שָׁמַיִם), Moash being similar to the original Hebrew name for Moses, and several countries having allusions to Hebrew letters, such as Alethkar (Aleph - א), Aimia (Ayin - ע), the Reshi Isles (Resh - ר), Shinovar (Shin - שׁ), etc. Under this rule, consider that the Hebrew word for head is Rosh (רֹאשׁ), and has connotations of leadership or beginnings, such as in Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the year. This implies Roshar has a significant place in the entirety of the Cosmere. Combine that with its unique placement as a seeming centre of trade and travel, with at least four worlds accessible from Shadsmar, and it implies a key role in future trade and Cognitive Realm travel. Roshar is one of the few worlds known to overflow naturally with Investiture, and more safely than others such as Sel, which would make it a vital location in future stories where mass use of Investiture becomes common, at the very least allowing for a rivalry to form with any other world that tries to export its power. A three or four way rivalry between Roshar and Sel (along with Scadrial and one or more other planets such as whatever worlds the Aethers use as a base) would present a much more interesting Cosmere future than one where Roshar's source of power - which can only be gathered in bulk in the Physical Realm - is no-longer accessible. Combined with the above point on its nature as a crossroads and it implies an important economic role in the future of the Cosmere, even if the Ghostbloods are defeated - that may itself begin the conflict between the worlds. Roshar is one of the most bizarre Cosmere world designed and presented thus far, with a beautiful and intricate ecosystem in both the Physical and Cognitive realm and involving a great deal of interplay between the two. As such its destruction, unlike that of Scadrial, Threnody, etc., would diminish the beauty of the Cosmere, especially as this world was specifically stated to have been designed by the Power before it was split, meaning any future attempts by a Shard to replicate it would be implicitly inferior. It also would mean that any future RPG made wouldn't let one play as Space Age Cosmere on Roshar, which while admittedly a somewhat fan-focused view is still one I think should be relevant. If Roshar is destroyed, it may eliminate Surgebinding entirely, as magic is based heavily on the world it comes from, and the Spren are a mixture of Honour and Cultivation, thus the destruction of Roshar could change or eliminate entire Orders - it certainly would spell the end of the Bondsmiths, as the three Shardspren are rooted in Roshar itself. Following from the previous point, Roshar is implied to be important to Era 4, and so we have the two points of both how cool it would be to see the future of Roshar in Era 4, as well as how Era 4 will somehow feature it in some important capacity. While not definite, this quote reinforces point 5 above. Note that this is listing the important planets. While it is possible for a planet to be destroyed and still be relevant, such as the inhabitants culture and magic being shaped by the world they came from even if that world is gone, it does imply Roshar itself is important in the future of the Cosmere. While each point in and of itself could be countered, I think together they make a strong argument as for why Roshar will not be destroyed. Though what are your thoughts? Would you prefer Roshar persists or be destroyed? Could it continue as a central crossroad even with the planet gone, and could the Orders survive its destruction? Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a great day!

  7. You know that time you do a math question and you weren’t paying attention at that moment when you were learning it so you have no idea what you are doing. Yep. That happened to me. I didn’t know what to put so I guessed and put in the reciprocal of the fraction that was in the problem. I got it right and just looked at the computer screen in pure befuddlement for several minutes.

  8. That wouldn’t be a bad assumption except for the fact that I explicitly stated that wasn’t what happened . There are Reasons(TM) that Hal, the player scanned N1, didn’t want to reveal themselves to the thread. Hal/Investigator had a decent read of me so figured me revealing would lower the risk. I am definitely unscanned, which means in theory I could be voted out. So the elims most certainly don’t need to eliminate me.

  11. Tonight I had a Young Women youth activity that was a sort of get-to-know-you game night. Everyone brought an object they felt represented them and then we played games. As the dedicated Sanderson fan I am, I brought Skyward. And Starsight. And Cytonic. And my Doomslug plushie. And my M-bot pin. And all my Cytonic stickers. *[Related tangent in spoiler box below]* And a Cytonic bookmark. And a "Merry Christmas from Detritus" drawing I made as a Secret Santa gift for Ookla the Theoretical. I think I got the point across that I like books. After everyone shared their items, I played a game called "Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza" with two other girls and two leaders. 'Twas fun. *Tangent: :)

  17. /shrug I promised Hal to keep silent until the scans were revealed. This meant making sure Bort didn't know he'd been scanned and that a Great Train would eventually materialise when Hal found whoever - which now seems to have been Araris. I also promised Bort not to out him, freely and without inducement, because to do otherwise was dishonourable and unfair. This included aggressively pushing him, so I didn't do that. It was a bit of an insane needle to thread, I admit, trying to keep both letter and spirit of my word to both parties. This led to a lot of GM PM yelling but this is more or less the sum of it. Edited to add: @|TJ| Ah no I'm tripping - this cannot be like D2 as the delta is declared. D2 delta came out of a Night Turn so delta masking occurs there, but not here.

  18. The Mortal Instruments, by Cassandra Clare. It was my favourite series for a while. Now I have a few issues with it, but they're very minor and just my personal pet peeves. It has excellent characters - as you get further in the series, each character develops their own motivation, relationships, character arcs, and even more personality. And don't be fooled by the first book's bad cover. (Seriously, that book's cover is awful. I remember having this extremely awkward with my mother about why I was reading a book with a half-naked tattooed guy featured prominently on the cover. The book isn't even that explicit!) Sorry, got sidetracked there Anyway, digression aside, its companion trilogy, the Infernal Devices, is also very good. I really think you'd enjoy this series! (And I didn't mean to write an entire essay about it, I promise...) The Thief series, by Megan Whalen Turner is honestly one of the most perfect fantasy series I have ever read. The first book was already awesome, but the entire thing's character development! And the plots! And the characters themselves! Just... I don't have the words to describe it, it's that amazing. (I'm not sure you'd like this one as much though, as at the beginning it doesn't really fit with the books on your list.)

  19. When, after your framed Bridge Four poster falls on you, you're more upset that your TWOK leatherbounds were slightly damaged than you are that you got cut slightly. (In my defense, it was small and cuts heal while books don't. On the other hand, I think I was in shock for a while. Very shaky and breaths came quick.) On a lighter note: when the realization that, now that you have income, you can buy Shardblades, keeps hitting you and making you happy all over again.

  20. I didn't say anything about this situation a few days ago because... the situation distracted me. Last Monday I almost passed out at gymnastics because of an intense pain where my spleen is. I waited a few days to see if it got better, and it barely did so I went to the doctor. They weren't sure what, but they could tell something was definitely up. An x-ray and some blood work later and they concluded... nothing. Nothing was conclusive. The best guess anyone has is internal bleeding, because there was a small something in the area of the pain and my blood pressure was slightly low.

  21. Taraganvian uses his control of Odium to save Kharbranth. He then fulfills his lifelong dream of opening a chouta stand. Odium's horrible intent forces him to make hatefullly bad chouta. Kaladin frequents the chouta stand, because his overdeveloped sense of protectiveness won't allow his to stand by while Taravangian's heart is broken for lack of customers. He ropes the other Windrunners into buying nasty chouta too, and they are all really mad and go find Rock to replace him as their leader and make them Horneater stew. Rock then ascends to Honor and the battle between Honor and Odium becomes a competition between two restaurants. Everyone moves on with their lives, except for the two eternal cooks, locked in their perpetual struggle, until Kaladin dies of old age and Odium instantly goes out of business. That is how Honor defeats Odium forever.

  22. I have been thinking about the back five books, and thinking who some of the big players may be. I could see Gavinor Kholin being a main character POV, especially with the time passing between the first 5 and back 5 making Gavinor 18ish?. If so, what would you theorize his role could be? Here is a fun one: After the death of his Dad and Grandfather and then Dalinar (what is Dalinar to him? Second Grandfather?), Gavinor learns to fight under Adolin and is a very promising duelist. But does not attract a Spren (maybe due to the anger and hatred in his heart). But with an early book 6 death of his grandmother (Navani) it becomes too much for Gavinor and he ends up leaving Urithiru turning his back on everything he previously knew. A blind Moash finds him in the wilderness and they end up helping each other! Poisoning his mind and forming Gavinor into a misguided teenager, growing the hatred and leading Gavinor to be a villain figure. (posible redemption arc for Gavinor in the end books, with the betrayal of and death of Moash) lol. Obviously this is extremely farfetched... but hey! that's the fun in it! and It's fun to think about haha. What are some of your fun theories for Gavinor?

  32. Throne of Glass is pretty good. I have the same issues with it that I do with Moral Instruments, just a warning. (I've been considering just not finishing it for a while but I'm so close to the end of the last book) I keep skipping parts. The plot is really good... Scythe is very good. I don't know if that's the same thing as Arc of a Scythe tho.

  33. Hey All, My name is Chip and I am a nurse who works long hours and needs long Epic Fantasy to keep my mind busy through much of the shift. I found Brandon in The Wheel of Time and the read Mistborn. I was hooked then. Sazed is my favorite Sanderson character. I deeply love Stormlight as well. I read both Mistborn and Stormlight at least once a year (did I mention the long hours). The scientific magic of the Cosmere is lovely to me. I am hooked. Now that my kids are getting to their teens, I am planning to read Mistborn and then Stormlight to them. Maybe I can get them hooked too. I am looking forward to needing out with all of you. Chip

  34. Ooouh yeah! Killing the man who killed his father, would be interesting. But it's also something common that we have seen in Moash already (revenge for his parents). And I do agree, I don't think Gavinor will be a villain either, but its a fun theory haha. But honestly I think that I will be surprised if Kaladin makes it past the next book. Or If he does, I think it would be in a vary different role (like not fighting anymore).

  35. Sorry, I don't mean to sound attacking. I was just explaining the reasoning. Actually I suggest you do a search and read the WoB for the simple fact it's kind of funny. You have questioners coming up with all these elaborate uses for hemalurgy and you can really read Brandon's uncomfortableness about it. Like once someone asked about doing something with spikes and Brandon was like "it would be very bad". The person replied "but would it be possible". And Brandon went something to the effect of "ummm yeeeeaaaahhh but you know there is the whole horribleness to it and all......" Northern scadrialians definitely believe in an immortal soul as of the original trilogy and the latest trilogy. Just read Kelsier's perspective and Wax's perspective when they die. They may not personally believe it, but they certainly entered it with general notions. No problem at all. Just to be clear because of language nuances, I hope you take my responses as open and genuine as intended. I hope it does not come off as harsh. So as my intention was not to say Kelsier is purely selfish, I assume this is in response to other posts so shall not respond. I think it's a bit conflating to say he did it only for love. He has a heart to heart with himself during Secret History where he admits to himself it was equally about the revenge. He then defended himself that both revenge and saving people as goals can align. So first there is a difference between manipulating someone to get you wine, and killing someone to make someone take the action you want. 1. Kelsier abandons the villagers. They can either join the rebellion, or if they stay, they will be executed as an example. This can be justified as kelsier stopping the rape and murder of an innocent girl, and freeing a village from a tyrannical leader. But Kelsier still forced people into a situation they didn't ask for, and to make a decision they don't really have a choice in. It is basically do what I want you to do or die. 2. Bilg and Demoux. I already explained how this was justified but the short of it is can't risk the rebellion falling apart. The means to do it is setting up an innocent man to die at the hands of another innocent man. The only reason Bilg was alive after that was because Demoux actively fought against Kelsier's allomantic push. 3. As I said already Preservation, Vin, and Elend. Justified for trying to save the world. Manipulated Vin by killing the love of her life Elend. Manipulated Preservation because only Preservation could interact with them, so forced Preservation to kill, something Preservation is very much against doing. 4. Manipulated Spook into using hemalurgy. We have Spook's notes where he is uncertain and trying to rationalize its use. Spook had real concerns and was worried. I could go on but for the sake of brevity, in those examples a whole lot of people could have, or in fact did, die. For the purpose of accomplishing a goal. So my point is, from Bilg's perspective, if he knew what kelsier really did, could he see kelsier as a villian? Could the villagers? And if so, then couldn't we say that kelsier could take an action in the future that would be received like a villain? The action could be perfectly justified to kelsier, but the person it was done to feel differently? Further we see Hoid say he would let Roshar burn if it meant protecting the rest of the cosmere from Rayse. Is that really different than what we have seen Kelsier do?

  36. I have to challenge that factually. He has changed and learned from his mistakes. But in the manner he saw them, not as some readers based on cultural assumptions think that he should. And he is entirely rational and bases his analysis of his shortcomings on facts. He almost doomed his home planet. How? By acting without knowing all the facts. And he absolutely has fixed that. And a being of divine power told him to be less manipulative. Has he heeded the call and kept his promise? Again: yes. Look at his agent. Mraize is arguably a murder, a blackmailer, a kidnapper and many other things. But he does not lie to you about certain things. Harmony used Lessie. Kelsier wouldn't. Harmony would not have you knifed in a dark alley. Kelsier would. That is the key difference.

  43. That first WoB was my buddy's question. We are thinking along the same lines as you are, for sure. In Oathbringer, the letter from Endowment is very cocky, even suggesting that Endowment is confident that she can "deal with" Odium if he becomes a problem. With Nightblood on Roshar able to permanently kill the Voidbringers, I think it's definitely likely that Nightblood is part of her schemes in dealing with Odium, but I can't say with any certainty that he is her "end game".
