  1. I wrote a thing. Opinions? His hair is white as stainless pages plain, It flows ‘round glorious visage, fettered not By earthly pull nor leather thong profane, And glows, requiring he be ne’er forgot. His eyes, more wondrous blue than sky so high, Or robins’ egg, or ocean deep below Their depths surpassing any mundane sigh And as they gaze, their pull seems but to grow. This wand’rer fair has travelled near and far To bring to pass his visions dear of old In times long past when evil did not mar And good had champions many, brave, and bold. But soon his journey ends, his task complete, And finished then, his happy end to meet.

  2. I just took the Meyers-Briggs (or a free internet equivalent, anyways) and found that I am an INFP-T, or a "Mediator." I'm also reading through the description and boy is this thing accurate. Just the first two paragraphs summarizes me up near perfectly: And then this: And then this: Heck, they even had a quote; and it was Tolkien!

  3. Hello there! I was coerced into doing Inktober along with all the folks who can actually do art, so I guess you'll get to better appreciate their works by juxtaposition. I'm already eleven days late, and likely will find myself falling behind a few times, but that's okay! I'm also planning on writing on a bit of lore for each drawing. Maybe they'll be in the same universe or something; idk yet. Anyways, thanks for putting up with my scud! Enjoy!

While this may be a good Vorin practice it does leave lots of interesting spellings. It may also leave them susceptible to influence from the shard of Invention. Some are close, others are not. 6. Just for clarity for the few people who read the status updates I post or even notice me when I get on because all the threads I regularly visit are dying, things are hectic in my house. We're trying to get everything out so a contractor we hired out can do some renovations, and as such my access to the Shard will effectively be limited to my phone. Because of this, I'll be less active for usual in a general sense. Although I would absolutely love to see some of the threads that I'm invested in have a come back. ---- As another incredibly large note, I'll be flying out to see @Zephrun's Imperium this Friday, and I'll stay over there for a few days. To say that I'm excited and insanely nervous at the same time would be an understatement. I've met her in person before, but that was technically before we were a thing and decided to date, so yeah. It's so very exciting, as she has it all planned out, and I can't wait to see it all and to just be with her. ---- On a much smaller note, I having computer problems. I have been attempting to build a computer over the last several months or so, and it has been unsuccessful so far due to (probably) software issues. If anyone knows their way around computers and is patient enough to deal with my inability to explain issues in great detail through words instead of demonstrations, then I'm all ears. Let's see . . . House renovations, visiting my girlfriend, computer issues . . . I think that's everythi- Oh! I do wish I knew most of the people on the Shard better than I currently do, but I'm not sure where to go in order to do that. So I'm at a loss there. Anyhow, have an enjoyable harvest season, happy Halloween, and superb pandemic.

  12. Actions might speak louder than words, but words often speak clearer than actions. In other words, words speak to the mind and actions speak to the heart. If you're still confused, have an example: In a relationship, it's important to both say "I love you" and show that you love them. If you have... Just words (they tell you "I love you" but don't do anything to show it): your brain thinks "well I've been told so it must be true" but your heart doesn't really feel anything. Just actions: your heart can tell that they love you, but if they don't ever tell you, your brain refuses to believe it. Both: your heart and mind are satisfied, sync together, and fill up and melt with happiness.

This guild is for those of us who will pledge our allegiance to the cause of... well... being awkward. Our best friends are fictional characters. We stay up late at night, watching the comforting blue glow of our various devices as we look up obscure things on The Coppermind. We read and reread books for traces of Hoid and various awesomeness. 18. I'm dropping into this thread a bit late, and I'll just say that while I appreciate Jasnah I do feel like she's destined to become a more divisive character in the future -- in part because so many fans worship her in her (relatively) static portrayal during the first half, and when she receives new character arcs in the back half I think many of us will have difficulty adjusting (unlike Shallan and Kaladin, who've been more variable since the start). My wife appreciates Jasnah as the female power fantasy character she was in TWoK, but has liked her a bit less with each subsequent portrayal. I have a feeling that she will take it very hard if Jasnah has a mind-shattering moment like the traumatic end of Shallan's stint as Robin Hood in Alethkar. Personally, I'm aching to see Jasnah have that moment -- that sounds a bit creepy now that I type it out, but what I mean is I'd love to see Jasnah succeed at implementing a rational policy which results in catastrophic failure and immense suffering and she is eventually forced to recognize that she is a failure by her own utilitarian metrics. To the TC's point, I actually agree that Jasnah is specifically tailored to many readers' modern views and I can see why some would find that distracting.

  19. Hmm, this generally tracks. I do disagree here, it could just be a magical binding agent that's more durable than the things bound. Think about separating two things glued together, depending on the materials and glue, a glued thing might break before the glue gives. Not that I think that'll be the mechanic after perusing the thread, but it doesn't stick out to me. I'm inclined to think of it more as similar to Dalinar's Duolingo power, though that is a roundabout agreement after some consideration. The way it seems to me is that each of these (Full Lashing, Duolingo, Ishar's... thing) are all based on the same underlying principle, just applied to different things. Full Lashings tell two physical objects "you are one," while sneaking the cosmere a bribe to agree, thus the objects behave as one. Dalinar's Duolingo and Ishar's shenanigans simply seem to apply the same concept to some more abstract non-Physical things, presumably Connection and Identity respectively, if I were to guess. Connection is known to enable language and Identity seems probable for making one thing behave as an extention of another. Makes sense. Now, this raises an interesting question to me. Ishar's Blade is seen enabling him to do stuff at a comparable level to Dalinar. I don't think Tanavast would have played favourites with the Heralds, so would they all have access to the "broad spectrum" of their Surges? Could Jezrien's Blade have enabled the opening of a Perpendicularity? I think these definitions are still useful tools for discussion, though it hadn't dawned on me that people were apparently treating "Physical" and "Spiritual" as separate things rather than separate aspects of one thing. The way I see it any power can theoretically manifest along the lines of the three Realms. So Physical, Cognitive and Spiritual [power]. In the case of Adhesion, it is helpful to be able to talk about "narrow spectrum" Adhesion and "broad spectrum" Adhesion, as we don't see any hints that Windrunners can actively use any manifestation of Adhesion that doesn't directly affect the Physical. The only time Windrunners seem to be able to tap into something like the "broad spectrum" is during their level ups. Ishar says that things get closer to the Spiritual when a Radiant swears an oath and that it is especially prominent with Bondsmiths, but that still means that something happens with "normal" Radiants. And during the moment of achieving a new oath Windrunners do like Bondsmiths and pull Light out of nowhere. My conjecture is then that all orders get a brief period of access to a "broad spectrum" of their powers with each oath, possibly due to the influx of investiture into the spiritweb upon attaining it. Most Orders however don't manifest this particularly visibly, as only orders with access to Adhesion seem able to pull Light out of nowhere. Huh, that might have gotten away from me... Anyway, I do feel like the labels are useful for discussion as they can help us differentiate between different applications/manifestations of the same power. This makes sense, especially as Dalinar sticks Kadash to the floor that one time. I'd say that the terminology is fine, if unrefined and unstandardised. Physical Adhesion should, IMO, indicate Adhesion acting in/upon the Physical, Spiritual Adhesion the same upon the Spiritual. The former covers sticking things together, the latter messing with the cosmere components of the soul. Though the more I think as I write the less adequate these sound. Dalinar and Ishar's Perpendicularity trick probably needs its own category as "Hybrid" Adhesion or something and there are presumably Cognitive manifestations as well, presumably the thing that Syl thinks Dalinar should be able to do to make her feel what Kaladin feels would be that kind. Then there's Dalinar's repair powers, which Brandon has classified as Bondsmith stuff, which almost seems like reverse Soulcasting in a way. Mind, Urithiru has a bubble of increased air pressure around it. I also don't think that Adhesion can be separated into a purely Physical version and a full version any more than allomantic steel is a different ability than the Bands-enabled "my god, it's full of stars." The difference is purely one of power, not nature. And as I said above, I do think the Honorblades would all be at the same level of power, which seems to be similar to Bondsmith level, at least in the hands of a Herald. Another tidbit that might point to the level of investiture of the Honorblades is that Ishar mistakes Nightblood for one that's been corrupted. I don't think that pressure manipulation can purely be a Windrunner Radiant thing, either it's a hybrid manifestation, something that comes easier to Windrunners than Bondsmiths, Dalinar being bad at his powers or something similar to when the Stormfather says that Dalinar's Surges won't serve him well if he seeks to use them for mere battle. ¤_¤

She is darkeyed, but she also doesn't live within the Vorin caste system and almost immediately after she's introduced she starts living a life of luxury since she's friends with the newly elevated Prime of Azir. Not to mention, as a Shardbearer she's a de facto lighteyes now. That being said, her story does seem to deal with how the lower class is treated due to her own background as a street urchin and her duties as an Edgedancer. It's very possible that her story will deal with these issues in more depth once we get to her book.

  24. The Ryshadium can bond spren so I don't know that lacking a gemheart is even the hard rule that we might suppose for bonding lesser spren. What might be harder is that the hemalurgy seems to repel spren, and given how the mists shied away from hemalurgists in the time of the Lord Ruler, then it could prove to be a barrier for the Kandra to attract the spren.

Skyward established itself as a space battle flight school book, on a relatively small scale when compared to the cosmere, and the nosedive into the entire rest of the galaxy was a bit of a shock for me. The worldbuilding is good, just... not that much of it. Veil's reintegration was my favorite scene in the book and I will die on that hill as a Shallan-lover

  29. Weekly Roundup time! Some fun things this week: there are two giveaways associated with Cytonic preorders! Also, we finally got that movie review Brandon mentioned a couple months back. But first, we've got the obligatory Defiant (Skyward 4) update: prewriting is at 33%. Not much else to say there. Also, in case you missed it, the US cover for ReDawn was revealed on Tuesday! Moving on to the main event, though: if you're looking to preorder Cytonic, there are two giveaways going on, depending on where you preorder it from. The first is a giveaway for anyone who lives in the US and preorders from ANY US retailer (be it Amazon, the Mini-Con, or a local bookstore; as long as they give you a receipt, it qualifies): If you enter the retailer and receipt number (as proof of purchase) into the form on Get Underlined's website, they'll send you an enameled pin (Brandon says Doomslug in the video, but the poster shows the M-Drone hugging a mushroom), and a link to virtually watch the Cytonic release party at the Dragonsteel Mini-Con on November 23rd from 7PM-9PM MDT. The second is a sweepstakes open to anyone who preorders from Barnes & Noble's website or applies via email (see below). One winner will receive: A leatherbound journal A signed copy of Cytonic A collection of some of Brandon's favorite books, including: Going Postal An Ember in the Ashes The Black Prism Uprooted The Promise of Blood The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms The Star Touched Queen Project Hail Mary A Darker Shade of Magic In addition, thanks to legal requirements in the United States, an alternative method of entry is available for those who don't want to purchase from Barnes & Noble: you can instead send an email to [email protected] titled "Entry Form Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson Sweepstakes", with your name, email address, and physical address. (Only one entry per person is allowed, and duplicates will be disqualified.) On the other hand, if you preordered from Barnes & Noble but want to opt-out, you can send an email to sweepstakesoptout@bn with the subject "Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson Sweepstakes Opt Out". These events are not mutually exclusive: if you preorder from B&N, that order does qualify for both their sweepstakes and the Get Underlined giveaway, and emailing to enter B&N's contest does not prevent you from getting the pin and release event access. If you live outside the US, Team Dragonsteel is currently in talks with the UK publisher about other promotions, but we'll just have to wait and find out whether or not that comes to fruition and in what way. In other news, Brandon did a mostly spoiler-free review of Jungle Cruise. An aside: he actually mentioned he had made a film review (although had not revealed which movie) back in August, covered in our very first Weekly Update article—how time flies... And lastly, he announced that the Halloween livestream has been moved to October 30th, at 3PM MDT. Adam did actually put a note about this on the last Weekly Update video, so our previous Weekly Roundup article did mention the correct date, but if you were listening to the video without paying too much attention to the screen, you may have gotten the old schedule instead. As a reminder, the Halloween livestream will be Brandon and Emily opening fanmail all dressed up in-costume, to try and work through a lot of what has built up since the normal streams stopped having fanmail segments. No questions will be taken, except those sent in with said mail. Should you wish to watch Brandon's update video, it is of course on YouTube, and embedded below. Ordinarily, a transcript is eventually uploaded to Brandon's website by Brandon's assistant Adam, but his posts haven't been made for this one or last week's yet, so can't link to it here.

  30. I think the simplest way answer to why the Ghostbloods would be trying to get Stormlight offworld is that it's the easiest accessible universal power source available. Medallions at the end of the day are limited to the specific powers that they provide, but from what we've seen it looks like Stormlight can be used to power just about anything.

  31. I think it's awesome that the main characters in the Cosmere learn that the circumstances of their lives (being skaa, darkeyed, etc.) have infinitely less affect on their happiness than the focus of their lives (helping others, swearing oaths, bringing down the Lord Ruler, becoming a better individual, etc.). Initially a lot of them are angry at their circumstances, but most (if not all) of the good characters move past that and focus on bettering themselves, and that's a really good message for today's world.

  32. Poem #18 Raging Maelstrom Mountains tremble as a voice calls out from regions unspoiled by the destroying eyes of demons wreathed in chains that drip boiling poison. The whole of the earth is split and cleaved in two. Armies freeze as their weapons become dust and ash in their hands. Beasts of prey tumble through the air as they leap and fall short as through a barrier holds them back. Vast oceans caught in storm rage as no more than ineffectual petulant children. Whirlwinds transport legions into forests older than mortal memories. In the dark razors painted with scarlet flecks seek to strip back flesh and tear the living spirit from both the living and the dead. Arrows of lightning fall from archers hands and ignite an inferno that illuminates the world from one edge of the mortal plane to the other. Agony rushes through city streets with the wild abandon beasts stricken with the crazed touch of Bacchus. Nemesis and her legions descend upon this damned place calling upon the weavers of Pluto's realm to employ their unfeeling shears. Jove's eagles fly across the heavens reaching their talons to rip away the tributes that the fearful try to secret away. Deep chasms offer no place to hide from the eyes of the furies as they glare into the void of living souls. All that exists is stripped bare and ravaged by immortals whose foolish whims drive the ground to fracture. Minerva and her shield stand aside in silence allowing carnage to roll across the land as though Neptune's hand was guiding the absolute destruction. Even the Avenger is left without words or thoughts. Every power in the cosmos acts at the same time with the precision that only primordial beings are capable. Kings cower in crumbled palaces surrounded by rains of dust which is their gilt and treasure. An epoch that consumes has grabbed hold of this pitiful realm. No end is near for any, but the single one who slips away with their cloaked back to the storm.

  33. I really appreciate the discussion about class struggle, there's so much I could say. I do still have hope that Brandon can deal with these issues through Lift's perspective as a major character in the back five books! She is someone who also comes from the lower class, has had to deal with a lot of hardship and trauma that come with being a dark-eyed orphan, and in her own special way she has a real sensitivity to the struggles and voices of ordinary people. Edgedancer ideals are really themed around recognising oppression and listening to marginalised people so hopefully we will see an in depth exploration of these important issues there!

  34. Something somewhat related to this, I'm in a music theory class and the professor commented that a person without perfect pitch can only recognize about 7-9 pitches if they hear them (like a usual major or minor 8 note scale), but people with perfect pitch can recognize 12 or more (this was somewhat unclear because we were talking about the 12 note scale and not actually about people with perfect pitch), which I found interesting and immediately thought about the gods of Hallendren, naturally. Of course my original thought was wondering if they would listen to music with the 12 tones and if it would just sound like so much noise to people below the 3rd(?) Heightening rather than if the gods of Hallendren would find a piano's tuning Not Good.

  35. In advance: My English still isn't very good (even given all the English -- mostly Brandon's -- books I've read since I stumbled over BS :)) also I've never been good in physics. :) When I read this I recalled this scene from Words of Radiance: What those spren do, I don't have an idea. :) Anyways sticking objects together is something windspren -- and Syl -- can do themselves, without "human" intervention. That was my impression also -- with the added effect that the ground drained them of Stormlight what might be caused by Ishar having combined the "Physical Adhesion" with "Spiritual Adhesion" by "making their powers see the stones as part of their body". IMHO Spiritual Adhesion is creating a "spiritual" (or/and cognitive?) bond, as it was with Dalinar in Azir. Unfortunately Rock wasn't there to tell us whether there also were spren involved. I don't think that Kaladin even thought about such a possibility. Would he know about Connection? So for reasons of simplification Spiritual Adhesion is creation something that doesn't bind "things" together while Physical Adhesion it is when physical things get bound.

  36. Mostly, yeah. Mainly just pushing back against the idea that Bondsmiths are like, accessing an entire different version of the Surge like the way Renarin's futuresight is or something. It's just accessing a narrower part vs a broader part that includes said broader part, imo. Imo, yes. If the bond is a similar level of depth (and I think it'd be odd if it wasn't, though this is just gut feeling on my part), then it will probably involve significantly more Investiture simply because the spren has significantly more Investiture. Plus, Bondsmiths can do crazy things like create Light, and Dalinar can open a whole Perpendicularity. Combine that with the in general far more expansive access to the powers (which, as we see with the Bands, is something higher levels of Investiture can cause in at least some cases), and I think it's reasonable. Maybe? Wish we'd seen Tension literally ever to be able to say I don't think that's an unreasonable idea, but it does make more sense to me for the absolutely staggeringly absurd level of power a Bondsmith is capable of achieving to be due to the wayyyyy larger spren than due just to the combo of Surges, because otherwise you'd expect orders with similar levels of craziness from the combinations and we just don't really seem to see that (and also it adds a much stronger limit: much harder to make a new "godspren" than a bunch of normal-sized spren of Adhesion and Tension, if on a meta level you want to keep things from getting too out of hand).

  37. So you are saying that Physical Adhesion is just the visible result of Spiritual Adhesion? If so, that makes sense Realmatically. Are you suggesting that Bondsmiths are more Invested, per Oath level, than Windrunners? That I'm not so sure of. I wonder if the Bondsmith's ability to manipulate Spiritual Connection on a deeper level is due to the resonance between Adhesion and Tension. The need to work on very fine scales to manipulate axi with Tension might allow the intricate and subtle work with Adhesion as well.

They might not even claim in the execution phase if they're a candidate if the keymaster is about to die, since the sage loses either way if either they or the keymaster dies. We could agree to be nicer to sage claims to make sure they can stop us from killing the keymaster without inevitably losing for their trouble. @Sart, does the sacrifice still lose their extra vote at low remaining player count?

  43. Yeah Lord of the Flies was a very insightful story and the premise that men are inclined to devolve into savagery is often true. That is actually one of the Themes in Terry Goodkind's Jack Raines series. He is not the protagonist, but is in most of the books. The Protagonists are Kate Bishop in Nest, and Angelina Constantine in Girl in the Moon and the others. If I were to list my favorite book of all time it would be the Book of Mormon. I read it at least six times before I left grade school and couldn't tell you how many times I have read it in the decades since. It is full of politics, intrigue, war, philosophy, adventure, magic, inspiration, theology and could very well be historically accurate. Could it be read as a fantasy book? Absolutely. It could also be read as a historical or alternate historical drama set mostly in pre-Columbian America. It is the most complex book I have ever read with thousands of layers and intricate if strait forward prose. I don't want to push you or anyone into reading it, but this book must be experienced personally and cannot be properly appreciated on the recommendation or discouragement of anyone else even others who have read it. Once again thanks for participating this is becoming my favorite stream.

  44. Rick Riordan (Heroes of Olympus) writes the stormlight archives. Well, the first five books would be goofy and funny with just enough action and characterization to make you care. Then the second five would go like this: First off, all of the mythology the series uses as a back story would be used up, and it would be replaced with bad drama. They would gather up a team of 7 teenage radiants based solely on their diversity of racial, regional, and ideological backgrounds. The characters would then rebuild the Wandersail, giving it the ability to fly and automatic cannons that shoot a near-infinite supply of giant exploding shardblades, but the ship would always break down for various reasons at just the right times for them not to be able to use it. The characters would have 30 days to travel from Shinovar to New Natanatan. It would take them half a book to fly as far as the shattered plains, then the other 4 and a half would be spent with them traveling along at snail's pace and figuring out how all of the love triangles worked. Whenever the characters needed to fight something outside the ship, they would send one or two guys to do it while the rest stood around looking anxious. Characters would randomly develop irrational hatreds for each other which would be solved after a few half-hearted comments. The entire series would talk about how infallible Odium was, then at the end of the series when he comes back they'd arbitrarily shoot an exploding shardblade at him which kills him somehow and solves all of their problems ... Anything I missed?
