  2. Brandon has officially revealed the US cover for ReDawn, the second of the Skyward Flight parallel novellas! As with the rest of the Skyward series, the cover is by Charlie Bowater. (UK covers will happen eventually, but no word on when. Apparently the novellas moved pretty quickly and Gollancz, his UK publisher, got involved too late to have the covers out yet… which is about the most Brandon way this could have gone ) Without further ado, here it is: As a reminder, or in case you've missed it, Brandon has brought in his friend and former student, Janci Patterson, to write a sequence of three novellas that take place alongside Starsight and Cytonic so that we can keep up with characters from Detritus while Spensa is off on her own. ReDawn is the second of these, following the UrDail cytonic Alanik of the planet ReDawn. ReDawn is due to release on October 26th in both audio and eBook formats (a print collection of all three novellas is expected sometime next year), and can be preordered from links on Penguin Random House's page. The publisher's synopsis is as follows: (There's no sample out as of yet, but when one's released it should be available from the same links as above.)

  7. Nicolae Kimby had an appointment he was loathe to attend. A carriage waited to take him to the Praetorium estate where Fischer and his masters would have dinner with him. He had no idea what he'd done to garner an invitation to dinner with the Raveness and he honestly wasn't sure if he wanted to know the answer at all. Who knew what her Raven-ness and the general wanted with him. But of course she'd been fired, if rumors were to be believed, so she couldn't harm him. Plus, if Fischer was willing to be her bodyguard, then perhaps she wasn't as terrifying as her reputation implied. Fischer. Stars, that name made him dizzy. Part of him was still angry with the man for being so rude to Wendy, but then, he hadn't been much better to her this morning. The other part was glad that his friend had made him realize the truth that he didn't need Wendy or anyone. And a third part... a third part longed for the simplicity of years passed. When Fischer had dubbed him the Prince of Daisies, when they'd pooled their earnings to purchase special snacks to share. When kisses hadn't evoked such a sickening feeling in his stomach and he'd been as innocent as dawn. Could he have that again, now that Fischer was back?

  10. It depends! The Metallic Arts and Awakening can both work anywhere in the Cosmere, and if you can get the Aviar off of their native world or the sand from Taldain then things can become viable there. But most of the magic on Roshar is more or less restricted at present as neither Stormlight or spren can be taken off planet right now. The magic from Elantris is also restricted to location, but it seems like the Ire have their own work around to this issue, and seons can get off world even though spren cannot.

  11. I think people are overestimating how powerful the Ghostbloods are. Thaidakar is very capable, has access to a lot of magic, and puts on a good show, but at the end of the day, he’s just a guy. His crew are just people. The Set, on the other hand, work for Trell, a force which Harmony struggles to deal with. The Ghostbloods are cool, but the Set is out of their league. (Also, I have no doubt that the Ghostbloods would oppose the Set if they could. The Set works for a tyrannical god. That goes against everything Thaidakar stands for.)

  12. We know that pre-Evil Threnody used certain rites to make Cognitive Shadows they used for some purposes among them warfare and travel in the Cognitive Realm. Now, as rites are apparently necessary, we have to ask what happens if you mess them up. The answer may very well be: you make shades. If that happens, you have a problem on your hands. They are quite dangerous and nothing you could tolerate around you if you want to sustain an industrialized (or even bronze age) way of life. Outright killing them with silver would be murder. So I would propose that they put them on ships and let them sail without a crew. Or, if you are nicer, you have a priesthood or secret society whose task is to transfer them to that useless continent they are keeping secret. Until those repugnant fanatic Forescouts messed everything up.

  13. Mack was a Craftsman. He built weapons, gadgets, armor, and clothing then enchanted them with whatever magics he knew. His focus was on the Aon Dor, and it had served him well. A quick survey of the wall's of his workshop would reveal that. There were wands with pre-designed Aon spells carved into them, designed to do everything from watering the plants to shooting fireballs. There was a metal bunny statue, with a red button surrounded by Aons. There were cloaks of disguise or invisibility, and there was a suit of armor packed full of enough Aon tech that it could nearly stand up to a shard bearer. He was proud of his work, it had served him well. At least until he came up against Mac, Voidus, and the rest of the DA. He shuddered as he remembered them. They were god's. Demonic beings who held power to rival the shards of Adonalsium in the palm of their hand. There was nothing that anyone could do against them. They had held this city under their firm control for millennia, and no one could do anything about it until they intentionally left the playing field. Voidus had gone and disappeared, so had the Stranger and Mac. Out of the three of them, Mac was the most likely to return, but that was unlikely. Furthermore, as he left the Stranger transformed the Universe into a different place. One without the DA's overarching presence. They had been weakened. Besides the 7 Day War, this was the only time in the history of the world that the DA had appeared even slightly stifled. That was a time of hero's. When the world had banded together and stood against the terrors of the DA. The very best and most powerful hero's had fought with all their power. But they were gone. It had been several decades, and unfortunately the hero job doesn't come with a long life expectancy. Mack looked up at the wall again, this time going higher, past his own creations and on to those of demigods. He saw his iceblade, signifying his allegiance to Queen Elsa Steelheart and her Icy courts. He saw an awakened blade, given to Mac for being an early member of the Ghostblood council. Unusable by him, but nonetheless powerful and impressive. He saw a rod of metal, glowing with the power of shardpools, and a scroll that contained knowledge and mysteries untold. These things weren't within his power to create or even replicate. He just didn't know enough about their construction and forging to replicate them, if had more samples he might be able to figure it out, but nothing had emerged from the 7 day war, or earlier. That is, until this evening. Turning around he looked at his desk, where he had found a slip of paper stashed in the Hall of Legends. On it there was this riddle: 17 myths around the verse 4 blades, in the hands of those trusted 2 rings, lying on 2 lovers, forever separated 1 deck of cards, used by the one you look at now 5 stones, buried in 5 guilds 3 sets of armor, hidden between three sets of spirits 1 band, hidden in luck And a long forgotten metal, held by one who cannot be found, but instead one who everyone sees The Rings, decks of cards, and sets of armor, had been found, or the trail confirmed dead. As well as one of the 5 stones. Yet the blades, band, metal, and 4 stones were still out there. Waiting to be found. Maybe he could find some of these, and maybe he could deconstruct them to make more so that eventually, when the guilds got heady, he would be ready to fight.

  14. How much of this universe actually matters to you? Try putting a number on it: twenty percent? Thirty percent? Ninety percent? Do you care about what you know, or do you think about all that we don’t? We haven’t explored the vast majority of our own oceans, let alone everything beneath the crust, or any sizeable portion of another planet, or any meaningful fragment of the universe. Statistically speaking you’re going to be stuck on this one bead of lava and sediment for your entire life, and even then you can’t possibly see all of it. So if you only care about the stuff that you can observe, then you’re limiting yourself. Go beyond. I have a friend whose mindset is very similar to my own in terms of knowledge. With so much stuff out there, isn’t it a little mean that we only get a few decades to look at it? He’s of a firm belief that if something exists, then it can be experienced; and he wants to experience it all. I’m of the same mind, learning all I can about whatever I can. I’m not quite as good at it as he is, but overall I think I do pretty well. That’s why I decided that this thing should exist: so I can just talk about the stuff and why it matters. With so many things out there in their infinite complexity, there’s so much that we can miss. And to be completely honest, I don’t want to miss any of it. I plan to talk about scientific discoveries, laws, and theories. I plan to talk about the arts and why they matter. Broad-scale anthropology, styles of society, types of cultures; The implications of everyday things on the level of generations; Growth, change, learning, knowledge itself; Philosophical ideologies and processes; literally anything that I can think of that seems to matter—which is everything. So welcome to Unnecessarily Overcomplicated!

  18. Brandon's treatment of the pillars of plot: Promise, progress, payoff. He's good at establishing information, working with it in a way that feels like the plot moves somewhere, and then using the information in unexpected ways to solve the conflicts of the story, often with a special twist. He's become so elegant at that, I've found it's hard to read anyone else attempt the same thing, he's just mastered it.

  28. I think something that Sanderson has done over the years, with a marked increase in the last few years, is increase his level of diversity in his works and change the tone of his books to be more explicitly "pro-diversity" and socially liberal. Inclusion is a very worthy goal and I'm glad that there are now more people who can envision themselves in the worlds of the Cosmere. And understanding the views of the SFF fandom at large I am sure that a large part of his fanbase is cheering loudly for this and more are saying he hasn't gone far enough yet and should go farther. Respectfully and carefully and with the best of possible intentions, I want to say that I believe there's a risk in this approach too. I think this tone shift is what has made his work feel more "mellow" and lacking in conflict. I think over time, Sanderson's work has started to shift to include fewer possible views and ways that someone on the "good team" could think and act. Mr. T being really the only recent exception as someone who has good side goals but evil side methods. But think back to Mistborn - you had Vin being the classic "I want to sacrifice myself to save everybody!" hero. Kelsier was selfish and wanted to save people for his own glory and defeat the Lord Ruler for his own personal ends. Breeze had questionable ethics in his use of emotional allomancy. Even the Lord Ruler is revealed to be not exactly what he seems morally. Mistborn felt like a group of people with diverse viewpoints and moral values coming together to solve a world ending problem. Stormlight lately feels like a group of people who all have the same views and moral values teaming up to save the world and anyone who might have good goals but different views in how to achieve them is cast as a villain. Just as an example, I think it would have been more interesting to see "Team Radiant" forced to accept someone like Sadeas or Amaram as part of the alliance to face down Odium and that they hadn't gone full mustache twirling evil. Instead, they could have been cast more like a Kelsier who used questionable ethics and had selfish motivations but ultimately wanted to do something that would end up being good for everyone. And now Team Radiant is basically just a group of people who all highly value and promote acceptance and inclusion as the solution to defeating Odium, they just do it in different degrees and slightly different flavors. Those are, again, noble goals and very good things. But I believe it would be more interesting if some of the "good guys" had different and conflicting views. I fully admit this is my own viewpoint and may not be accurate.

  29. Well, the Set had no idea where the Bands of Mourning were, and there's no good reason why Kelsier wouldn't tell them where his most powerful weapon is if he's on their side. We also have a WOB that Kell and Sazed still understand each other and to some degree see each other as friends (despite disapproving of each other's methods). So it's at least extremely unlikely. Regarding the main question of this thread, the Ghostbloods probably tried, but they are active in the whole Cosmere while the Set - as far as we know - is specific to Scadrial, so their efforts might not be as focused? I don't know. I guess there's a good chance that we'll find out in W&W4.

  34. The Kandra is the mistwraith, they are not separate beings. Mistwraiths are physically altered humans that TLR designed with something specific missing that prevents them from being sapient without spikes. The spikes contains whatever allows them to become people, it doesn't create a new one. So when they die and show up in the Cognitive realm, they'll show up however they see themselves just like any other person. The Koloss didn't see themselves as Koloss, they saw themselves as people. Similarly, Kandra spend so much time imitating people that most in Era 2 would show up as whatever form they identify with the most. I'd say if Tensoon died, he'd show up looking like a dog. The Era 1 Kandra that never left the homeland would likely appear as the translucent forms with whatever material they preferred for a skeleton.

  35. The Lord Ruler made as many spikes as they requested. He did not tell them that they are hemalurgic constructs. He was careful. He learned from moving the sun. To Rashek being careful meant not doing irreversable things and always having a plan B. He even kept a bead of lerasium around, just in case. He has a certain need for feruchemy. Without feruchemy he cannot fully equip his new Steel Inquisitors. He needs to keep the breeding populations apart, but totally eradicating feruchemy would create other problems. Yes. No more Skaa corpses just dumped somewhere. And Sazed has recreated the verdant ecology with its own scavangers. All bad news for other scavangers. Marasi noted in Bands of Mourning that no Mistwraith has been seen in a long time. Granted, Scadrians are not avid explorers, but Mistwraiths are at least rare.

  40. I was diagnosed as an adult recently (earlier this year). For me it started reading stuff and being like "Hmm I relate to that" (definitely had stuff I didn't relate to). Then, I was talking to a counsellor about it, and he (having ADHD himself) suggested I talk to my doctor, so I got assessed by filling out some questionnaires. After the assessment questionnaires indicated ADHD was likely (and ruled out some stuff that can seem like ADHD, including certain types of anxiety and depression) my doctor said usually the medication either works well or it definitely doesn't, so we did a one month trial and it made a huge difference for me. After, on the advice of my doctor, I looked back at some of my old report cards and stuff - very interesting reading some of the teacher's comments in a new light. There's definitely a combination of common experiences that a lot of people have, and some things that are different, so it can be tough to tell just reading stuff online.
