  1. Happy Spooky Month! It's time to get Spooky Scary Skeletons stuck in your head and start planning your costume - I'm sure you're all going as Sanderson characters. Right? Right? I'm hoping to do Inktober, but a) none will be impressive, and b ) I will get behind, especially on posting. So you may get an occasional update? If I make one that I feel is impressive. And yeah, I feel suicidal occasionally, especially with divorce things. If I need help, can I come to you guys? Love y'all, Connie

  2. Hello, I have been rereading ROW and trying to focus on some of the Radiants with less screen time. We see that Gaz, like all of the other members of Shallan's Deserters has joined the Unseen Court and presumably bonded a Cryptic. I remembered that Brandon said that if Elokhar had been allowed to progress with his oaths he would have had to eventually admit to being a bad king. We know more about Gaz than any of the other new Lightweavers, so I tried to guess some of his Truths. I imagine his first truth (besides the oath) would be about his gambling. Admitting that an addiction is real and out of control is the first step after all. Gaz reads as a pessimist because he is always complaining and expects the worst from people, but he is one of several people to become inspired after seeing Shallan's drawing of them. I imagine another early oath might be admitting that he actually can become a better person, like in the drawing. However I think that a later oath (4th or 5th) would have to be him admitting his culpability in the deaths and mistreatment of the bridgemen. We see in WOK that he is bothered by what he is doing and in WOR when he explains it he is quick to pass the blame onto Sadeas and his superiors. This oath is the one I would be most interested in seeing on screen, either the actual swearing or a scene where he apologizes to the bridgemen and its made clear that this is part of him admitting truth. He may also have to admit to his cowardice Tib

  3. If all of you will permit me I must rant again! I'm being jerked around like some kind of marionette by two people who clearly don't care what happens to me one way or the other. They both wear false smiles and make claims of trying to go the distance so that all problems that require resolutions will be resolved. Neither of them could be bothered to check whether their words match the reality, Let me let you in on a secret. Their words become less convincing by the day. If either of them truly wanted to maker sure that things were not simply allowed to get worse then the first thing they would do is consider that I am caught between them. Forget fairness for a minute. How about you don't trap me in a hopeless situation where I will be the one who truly suffers. Frustrating is not the word. It cannot begin to describe how I'm feeling. I'm rage personified right now. That can't even do it justice. A cycle of of unending fire and icy loathing mix within me. I always rant and you are always the greatest. Thank you for listening when others don't.

  5. Hey there, hello there. If you don’t know what Inktober is at this point… uh, look it up, ‘cause I ain’t explaining it to you lol. All of these are most likely going to be from the official Inktober prompts, maybe with some other prompts. Who knows at this point? I ain’t the best at pens, so these might be a little bit sloppy/crappy lol. Anyways, here’s what I got so far, and I’ll update with a new drawing hopefully every day. Depends on if I’m busy or not. Day 1: Crystal Day 2: Suit Day 3: Vessel

  8. The man currently known as Drol started the thread in this same section of the forums. Eventually it became a part of the alleyverse RP, and got moved to the Alleyverse sub-forum where it continued for several years under different leaders. I think the forgetful archivist was the final leader of the organization before it was hit with the plague of inactivity, or succumbed to the power of the Dark Alley depending on how you looked at it.

  9. A few things: Anyone want more RightingWrites? I can make a whole bunch more (currently thinking about Soft Worldbuilding and Static Characters), but if nobody's interested then I prolly won't. Would anyone be interested in a Fadran Inktober thread? My powers of arting have grown, and now the stuff I draw isn't actually super cringy or disgusting! It certainly isn't good, but it isn't terrible either. How many of y'all would want pics of Fadran dressed up as Roy Mustang? I'd just be DMing it to the people I know. And please please please please please consider me to talk to if you need to talk to somebody. All my Shardbuddies seem to be very sad and I don't like it when my friends are sad. If something's happened or you're just concerned, then I'm on the Shard way too often and should be available most of the time.

  10. Just stream-of-consciousness here but... I was also thinking Jah Keved nan. And fabrication sounds like lightweaving? But... um is it Helaran's spren, like his Skybreaker Shardblade? But that doesn't fit all the clues. I'm so stumped, it has been a while since I've read Brando Sando though so maybe I'm just rusty on my Cosmere knowledge.

  11. There is a noncosmere character thread of this same game around here somewhere, if you want to revive it! I feel like this could also be referring to the Jah Keved title Nan...but I can't think of any fabricated friends of Balat, Heleran, or that one highprince guy...

  12. Prompt 12: Stuck, featuring Nicolae Kimby, the queerest child from Masquerade. I friggin' love my Nicolae. He has pretty severe depression, the poor thing. I think he really does feel stuck in life. He tries his darndest to be the best person he can be, but nothing in his life goes right for him. And yet, we love him in all his positivity and sweetness. We should all be a little more like Nico. Positive and light in a sad, dark world.

  13. Prompt 11: Sour, featuring Pearl Blaze, Star's youngest child from CBST. Pearl is an adventurous young Narrator, more inclined to create her own worlds than stay at home with her over-protective mother. Star keeps her dressed in lavish gowns like the one I've drawn, much to Pearl's chagrin; short shorts and crop tops are much more her style. You could say she's rather sour about it. Anyway, I'm sorry these last two drawings have looked so similar; tomorrows will be very different, I promise.

  14. Okay, we're back!!! I'm skipping prompt 9 because I tried it and it turned out so bad, but we're just going to ignore that. Prompt 10: Pick, featuring Nyx Thadel, Riva's mother from Masquerade. Despite the horrors she's committed, Nyx is honestly one of my favorite characters I have ever conceived. As the picture implies, she has a lot of blood on her hands. Maybe not as much blood as her daughter (eventually) but enough to make her one of the most heinous women I can think of. Of course it should be mention that a good amount of that blood was her own. Before her eventual death at her daughter's hands, Nyx had a nasty habit of self-punishment, spesifically in the form of picking at her arms; raking her long fingernails across her skin.

  15. Mack was a Craftsman. He built weapons, gadgets, armor, and clothing then enchanted them with whatever magics he knew. His focus was on the Aon Dor, and it had served him well. A quick survey of the wall's of his workshop would reveal that. There were wands with pre-designed Aon spells carved into them, designed to do everything from watering the plants to shooting fireballs. There was a metal bunny statue, with a red button surrounded by Aons. There were cloaks of disguise or invisibility, and there was a suit of armor packed full of enough Aon tech that it could nearly stand up to a shard bearer. He was proud of his work, it had served him well. At least until he came up against Mac, Voidus, and the rest of the DA. He shuddered as he remembered them. They were god's. Demonic beings who held power to rival the shards of Adonalsium in the palm of their hand. There was nothing that anyone could do against them. They had held this city under their firm control for millennia, and no one could do anything about it until they intentionally left the playing field. Voidus had gone and disappeared, so had the Stranger and Mac. Out of the three of them, Mac was the most likely to return, but that was unlikely. Furthermore, as he left the Stranger transformed the Universe into a different place. One without the DA's overarching presence. They had been weakened. Besides the 7 Day War, this was the only time in the history of the world that the DA had appeared even slightly stifled. That was a time of hero's. When the world had banded together and stood against the terrors of the DA. The very best and most powerful hero's had fought with all their power. But they were gone. It had been several decades, and unfortunately the hero job doesn't come with a long life expectancy. Mack looked up at the wall again, this time going higher, past his own creations and on to those of demigods. He saw his iceblade, signifying his allegiance to Queen Elsa Steelheart and her Icy courts. He saw an awakened blade, given to Mac for being an early member of the Ghostblood council. Unusable by him, but nonetheless powerful and impressive. He saw a rod of metal, glowing with the power of shardpools, and a scroll that contained knowledge and mysteries untold. These things weren't within his power to create or even replicate. He just didn't know enough about their construction and forging to replicate them, if had more samples he might be able to figure it out, but nothing had emerged from the 7 day war, or earlier. That is, until this evening. Turning around he looked at his desk, where he had found a slip of paper stashed in the Hall of Legends. On it there was this riddle: 17 myths around the verse 4 blades, in the hands of those trusted 2 rings, lying on 2 lovers, forever separated 1 deck of cards, used by the one you look at now 5 stones, buried in 5 guilds 3 sets of armor, hidden between three sets of spirits 1 band, hidden in luck And a long forgotten metal, held by one who cannot be found, but instead one who everyone sees The Rings, decks of cards, and sets of armor, had been found, or the trail confirmed dead. As well as one of the 5 stones. Yet the blades, band, metal, and 4 stones were still out there. Waiting to be found. Maybe he could find some of these, and maybe he could deconstruct them to make more so that eventually, when the guilds got heady, he would be ready to fight.

  16. Hello I am a middle school/high school science teacher and I am piloting a “classroom game.” Basically, I turned my classroom into an RPG. Students create avatars and level them up via experience points earned through completing assignments (I call them quests). The kids were intrigued at first, but now they are invested (ba dum dum). I have only had two assignments not turned in so far, and the kids stayed after school so they could complete the quest for partial exp. But this is a pilot program and the classes that I created are pretty generic and bland. I worry that the students will grow tired of them. I was hoping the 17th shard could help me come up with some new cosmere inspired classes and abilities. I also wondered if someone can tell me how to ask Brandon Sanderson if this is ok? I am not selling this idea or anything, but I don’t want to just take his stories and ideas. Important note: I do want the kids to be able to exploit this system. They already can, but they have not figured it out yet. Classes: Warrior: - block: can block incoming damage 10 times per marking period. (Can be upgrade three times) -Moralizing shout: can scream self encouragement to gain bonus “HP.” - Ultimate block (upgrades block): can block damage to yourself and one ally (upgradable). Can only block identical damage (same question). Healer: - Heal: can heal 1 entire attack (question: single points or multipoint) 5 times a marking period (upgradable). - Resurrect: can raise any assignment from the dead and reattempt it for full credit. New grade replaces the old grade once a marking period (upgradable). - ultimate heal (upgrades heal): can heal 1 entire attack for yourself and an ally (upgradable). Assassin: - backstab: can assassinate a question, removing it from the assignment. Can be used to remove multipoint questions, but it messes with the scaling of the grading and exp is lost by killing the question. Can be done 8 times a marking period (upgradable) - stealth: can use stealth ability to hide from unexpected dangers (questions in class) 5 times a marking period (upgradable) - ultimate stealth: upgrades stealth to allow students to sneak in late assignments for no penalty at all (stupid teacher meme). One assignment per marking period (upgradable).

  18. *fanfare plays* It's that time of year again. Artists! To your paper! Grab your ink pens! On your marks, get set, DRAW! Okay, so it's not technically October yet... BUT holy Shards am I busy this year. So I have decided that instead of drawing every day, I will draw every other day. And I'll start today! Which means that y'all will get your first piece tomorrow! Seriously, you guys have no idea how excited I've been about this. I bought new markers and paper for it months ago and on September 1st, I just kept refreshing the site, desperate for the moment the list came out. Since then, I've worked VERY hard every day to plan for each drawing and get references for it. The line up of drawings I have planned is gonna be wild and I think y'all will love it. I know I'll certainly be having fun! I'm so excited to go on this journey again with all of you! Now, I know that a lot of you like the drawings to be surprises, BUT I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a discord server where I post my process in depth. I'd post time lapses and gestures and progress photos there. If you're interested, you can join HERE. Here's to a great Inktober!!! - Star/Zi

  19. Personally, I think you should keep the interactions with Al, and find some way to make the logistics clearer. Seeing a character’s trauma is different from just hearing about it after the event, and given that this is fairly important to what makes Al the way he is, I think it’s important for him to actually make an appearance in this prologue.

  20. Think of Kandra as the software that runs on the mistwraith hardware. Koloss are human software but the hardware has been heavily modified(to the point where most of the original programing does not work). Mistrwaiths don't normally support Kandra software and must be modified with hemalurgy to run propperly. If you destroy the hardware of a physical being the software goes to the beyond. It is possible to tamper with or remove the software in either case and leave the hardware behind but in the cases you are talking about the hardware is destroyed both times. Once freed from incompatible hardware the koloss revert to their original specs.

  21. I've had similar thoughts about him, since I thought he might be able to sense Syl in WoK. He kept mentioning his eye patch around Kaladin, and I thought it might be related to Syl. I figured he had potential as a radiant, and I would be very surprised if acknowledging his part in how the bridgemen were treated will not be one of his ideals. True, he couldn't have changed how the army used bridgemen, but he didn't really do anything to protect them either.

Nearly everything with Lightsong. His conclusion is fantastic. The Denth twist is one of the bests twists I have ever read. I still don’t completely trust any character Brandon writes to this day. Stormlight: The Dog and the Dragon. Kaladin and Bridge 4 deciding to save Dalinar at the tower. Navani painting the Justice glyph in Sadeas’s camp. Maya speaking at the trial. Dalinar’s Oathbringer arc… but a small moment from it that I find particularly funny is his conversation with Lift about going into battle armed with books. Just to name a few…

  30. Brick Walls Everyone gains powers that grow with the size of the brick wall that they personally build with their bare hands, using bricks that they make themselves. The quality of the bricks, style of the wall, and the quality of the architecture all play a factor in the amount and type of power that is granted. There are a few alternate ways to gain power. The first of these methods is dueling. Magic users can challenge each other to duels in order to win the opponents wall, and the powers that come with it. These duels must be mutually agreed to by all parties involved, and are usually to the death, but can have other win conditions, so long as all parties involved agree to them. Duels are usually between two individuals, but they can contain any number of contestants. The next way to gain power is to steal the first brick placed in someone else's wall, also known as the FirstBrick, and add it to your own wall. This allows the thief to channel the magical powers of the person whose FirstBrick was stolen, as long as the FirstBrick remains in their wall. The FirstBrick can also be used to influence the mind of the person whose wall it was stolen from and, if added to a large enough wall, could be used to drive them insane or even completely mind control them. Someone under the influence of that control can be used to build the mind controller's wall, the only known way to have others build your wall. The final known way to gain power is through Succession. If the maker of a wall freely gives away their FirstBrick to another, the one who is given the FirstBrick gains all the power from the wall. They can also add to the wall, so long as the original owner is still alive. The difference between freely giving the FirstBrick and having it stolen or taken by force is hard to define, and greatly depends on the perception of the original owner of the FirstBrick. It is also possible to set up a way for others to claim the FirstBrick without the original owner's direct consent, or after their death. This is commonly known as a Compact, and is a set of rules or conditions that can be imbued upon the FirstBrick. These rules can be literal, (For example: My direct male descendants may claim my FirstBrick, so long as they are the reigning king of England as recognized by the Pope.) metaphorical, (Example: Only one who is pure of heart may claim my FirstBrick) or even contain a quest (Example: He who slays the dragon shall claim my FirstBrick.). If conditions are applied, the FirstBrick may pass through multiple hands. The single most prominent example of brick wall building, also known as Formature, is the Great Wall of China. This wall was begun by a samurai who labored for 10 years to build a wall, then began challenging others to gain more walls. After his wall (And his reputation) had grown, he began forcing his prisoners of war to create a FirstBrick and give it to him, then used these new slaves to make his wall even larger, until it eventually reached what it is today. On the day the wall was completed, he set forth the conditions under which his FirstBrick can be claimed, and placed it in a room that was specially formed to protect it from all who would try to steal it, and then departed into the unknown. The conditions he set are not commonly known, but the FirstBrick has been used three times in recorded history, and although many have attempted to steal it, only one person has ever come close to succeeding. 32. Are singers actually weaker than human in the past? Before BAM was captured, I assume singers can always kept their rhythms and forms (at least non-powered ones) between Desolations. Which means they have warform, nimbleform and many other form, there will not be that much disadvantage unless they are significantly out-numbered. I don't think human is capable to complete wipe them out, and obviously some orders of Radiants will not agree on genocide.

  33. Welp, I'm late again with posting... I'll be honest, these last two weeks have been incredibly hard for me, and I've been arting like crazy during it all. Working on the Creator Games, my Praetorium Poster, AND Inktober as well. So I think I'll shove all Inktober stuff back a day. I highly doubt I can spit out a piece of art for tomorrow. Not to say I won't try, but, well, you know how things are. So, without further ado, here's Prompt 8: Watch, featuring Pearl Blaze and Topaz Celeste. Topaz is an Ignitis made of stone and was created to serve Star as her daughter's nurse. He usually stays about 3'8'', but can unfold his rock body to be about 8 feet at most. Ya know, just in case he needs to clean the top shelf. I really don't RP with Topaz nearly enough. He's a fun character, although he would agree a poor replacement for Ember, his sister.

Rose is probably my most broken character and I just love her so much. She has severe anxiety which I relate to. Plus her power set of future sight and telekinesis is just epic. This particular drawing is a scene from the RP Oakenwey that was actually never written, but it's still definitely CBST canon.

You’d never find them all, especially if you’re short on manpower. Later, when the Knights Radiant were established, the Radiants would be held to ethical standards that prevent them from going after the Parsh.

Sorry I'm posting this one a little late; now that I'm back in school from being sick, I don't have as much time to draw and I overestimated how much time I had to do it. I'm still super proud of it, even though Sierra's hair isn't as awesome as I wanted it to be. Knot, as you might guess, is for the braids in her hair, which Sierra is rather famous for. Usually she wears it all in a braid, but I decided to change things up this time around. See ya Sunday!

  38. Prompt 3; Vessel, featuring Tamika Satrebil transforming into my name sake. Zephrun's Imperium. For those who are unaware, an Imperium is the condensed power of a planet into a human being. They are essentially generic shards. Shards have vessels and so do Imperiums, so, hey, the prompt works. I'm going to spoiler this drawing, 'cause it's a little racy, I guess, but I'm ridiculously proud of it. We were off to a rocky start with Crystal (heh, pun), but if the following two drawings are any indication, this is gonna be an epic Inktober line up.

He has not appeared in any RPs here on the Shard, but he's close to my heart. Silver's weakness is that he's incurably lazy, so it's significant he's wearing a suit; Star practically had to force him into it. Because, "If you're going to date my daughter, you had better look up to it." I had a ton of fun drawing this one and I think it turned out infinitely better than my last one. Be back on Wednesday with prompt 3! (PS: This is my 8,000'th post!)

  40. @KingofHerdaz I don't boycott artists based on political views, though I find overly political rightwing works (Terry Goodkind) unreadable. I suppose there are different schools of literary criticism, but let me make my point by contrasting Sanderson's Skyward and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. (mild spoilers for both) Both books feature a young protagonist with violent impulses saving their desperate world from an alien invasion. They have grumpy sergeants, an opaque military bureaucracy, a difficult peer group, and underlying mysteries. They both have peace loving characters to provide contrast. They are very similar books. I happen to know, however, that Orson Scott Card is rather religious and conservative. The books feel entirely different to me. Card is not criticizing the military or even presenting a debate they are our saviors, taking our collective sins upon themselves. Sanderson feels like he's offering us a picture of broken child and broken world on their way to being healed. This difference ultimately located in the authors political differences about war changes the whole book. Ender's game is dark and tortured; clinical, vicious and preachy. Skyward is punchy even silly, but richer more hopeful. If I thought Sanderson shared Card's politics Skyward would come off as bloodthirsty and shallow and characters like Kimmalyn, Cobb, and Jorgen would feel very different.

She was already on Doc's red list. Or at least she thought she was. They hadn't really talked, ever since that day in the kitchen. Somehow that also meant, that it was fine. If it wasn't, then he would most likely have told her to go away. Which he hadn't. And so she decided, that everything was fine, until he would talk to her again. Looking up, she smiled when she saw the stars and stopped, stood there and simply watched these little bright lights for a moment. "That's why we're here." She pointed at the orion. "Belt and sword, you can even barely see his legs." "At least I tell myself, that this is the reason I am here. If everything was covered in violet, dark light, controlled by them, what would happen to the stars?" Laughing at herself she looked back at Ben and James. "And you guys. I'd do everything to make sure you're safe." For a moment she looked at him again, then laughed some more. "I'm sorry, let's just blame the painkillers for all this emotional stuff."

Still she smiled slightly apologetically at him, unsure if he was uncomfortable with her right now. Loosening her grip she stepped back from him and left her hand on her arm. "Let's go home?"
