  1. This theory started as yet another attempt to match the Unmade and KR Orders (using new information from RoW, the KR Quiz etc.), but after revising my last attempt I realized that I actually completely agree with the classification created by @Bzhydack in this post: This has lead me to some interesting theories about Chemoarish and Yelig-Nar (which I believe match Stonewards and Skybreakers, respectively). In this post I'll focus just on Chemoarish. We don't really have much information on her: she's apparently often conflated with the Nightwatcher (probably implying some connection to Cultivation) and she's called a Dustmother. The latter might be a link to Dustbringers, but Nergaoul seems to match them quite well (direct inversion of their Ideal, captured in a ruby etc.). I believe, however, that Chemoarish makes sense if we treat her as an Unmade of Stone, which, as we know from Venli's chapters in RoW, also seems to be connected to Cultivation somehow. This leads me to this fragment we find in Dalinar's last vision in TWoK (chapter 75): I think what is described here might actually be Chemoarish

  2. Despite the unfortunate name, Also Nameless was one of the most vocal skaa of those that responded to Arenta's claims of Ministry spies. He immediately began accusing several notable skaa workers of having potential ties with the obligators. Others, however, thought this was an Ill Way to proceed. The small mob of skaa seemed unable to decide what to do, until Ven thrust a rusty knife between Also's ribs. Some of the skaa began to mutter about the killing, before noticing that the mists were beginning to form around them. That was enough to end the gathering and send everyone scurrying back to their homes. Azmine was a Skaa Informant living in (just kidding, you don't get to know this). Night 1 has begun, and will end at 6:00 PM EDT. Additionally, I want to clarify things since a bunch of people seem a little confused about the rules. Say Aralis is a Coinshot and he targets Fade while guessing location X. If Fade is in location X, Fade will die (without considering other possible players' actions) and Aralis will still have 2 charges of his Coinshot ability. If Fade is not in location X, the kill won't succeed (and Fade won't even know he was attacked). Aralis will have only a single charge of his ability left. Some other things: All location abilities happen after all Allomantic abilities Location abilities are once per game, barring an Elder using their ability Location scans go before location moves, so they cannot be guaranteed to accurate by the end of the Night Vote Tally: Player List

  3. A loud bang shook the town square were the Skaa were raucously debating. An unassuming windowless house with a tall brick chimney on the north end of the square shook like it was experiencing a localized earthquake. Putrid green smoke shot upwards out of the chimney, like water out of a geyser, before slowly dispersing into the smoky air. The south wall of the house creaked and groaned as it fell outwards in a single slab. A small figure stumbles out, coughing desperately for air. Shocks of patchy white hair sit atop a long nosed pallid face. A single thick eyebrow twitches nervously above his left eye as Avanchel makes his entrance. "Did I" *cough* "miss something," rasped Avanchel, looking around at the tense scene. "I heard some younglings calling my name." Avanchel listened impatiently as someone tried to explain what had happened. Avanchel quickly became uninterested in their accusations and stalked off, pondering the claims about the Ministry. He clambered over the fallen wall, subconsciously estimating the cost of rebuilding and reinforcing it for the fifth time. Experiment #82 had been rather destructive, but at least it could be chalked up as partial success. Avanchel unlocked the door to his study and sat down at the desk. Every inch of space on the desk was filled with loose paper: theorems, notes, and half baked ideas. He sighed and swept them into an empty draw. They would have to wait. Avanchel found the false back he was looking for and removed a small red bound leather notebook. He smiled. This was an opportunity he could not pass up. Avanchel grabbed a clean sheet of paper and started writing.

  4. I have been in the process of adding The abilities of a mistborn, full feruchemist, and the stormlight powers to mario 64 using the sm64 decomp repo. I am almost done adding feruchemy, almost halfway done with allomancy, and just started adding stormlight. 5. The gist for those who don’t want to read a massive post: Shallan is a Byronic hero. Female Byronic characters are rare and tend to be received more poorly than their male counterparts. Do you think this may have affected how some readers responded to her? Long version: I recently watched a great PBS video about Byronic heroes and it got me thinking about a certain Veden redhead. If any of you aren’t familiar, a Byronic hero is a character modeled after the characters of Lord Byron (and indeed Lord Byron himself). They are a contrast to traditional heroes in that they are more morally ambiguous. These are deeply flawed and self destructive characters who lie somewhere between hero and villain, but we are meant to root for them anyways. There was a section of the video in which they discussed the recent trend of occasionally seeing female Byronic characters. Traditionally, pretty much all Byronic characters have been male, and the vast majority still are. They noted that Byronic heroines often haven’t been well received. Which is interesting because male Byronic heroes have been hugely popular over the centuries. So, Shallan. I find the reactions Shallan draws to be fascinating. I know there are a lot of people who love, like, or are ambivalent towards her. But the large subgroup who hate her really, really hate her. Which is fine. It’s just interesting. I’ve seen calls for her to be killed, to have her head chopped off, to have a stroke. Commonly listed reasons being: Bad puns (Which, while bad, can’t possibly account for this reaction. Combined it’s like a paragraph's worth of puns in a 4,000+ page series). Some find her mental pathology off putting. But by far the most common is to give no reason at all. People just plain hate her. Can’t stand her. Annoying, loathsome, intolerable, cringe. Shallan happens to be the most Byronic character in the Stormlight Archive. (Most Byronic in the entire cosmere goes to Kelsier). Classic Byronic characteristics that I feel fit Shallan are: tortured by a dark secret from her past, morally questionable, self-destructive, traumatized, highly intelligent, sardonic, arrogant, manipulative, self-serving, enigmatic, reckless, self-indulgent, prone to substance abuse, an air of dominance while deep down she’s extremely vulnerable, an obsession with getting what she wants regardless of the cost to others, and a persistent inability to face her demons. This might be entirely unrelated to these strong reactions, but I can’t help but wonder if there is a connection. Shallan is a deeply flawed and messy character in ways that might have been more forgivable, or even appealing, if she were male. The more typical and expected male Byronic hero. Then again, it might have nothing to do with her gender. But I wish she were at least recognized and accepted for her Byronic nature instead of being treated like a traditional hero but a really crappy one. If you try to read Shallan like a traditional hero, she fails as a character. Shallan constantly makes bad choices and is very slow to learn from her mistakes. The narrative doesn’t necessarily punish her for bad behavior, and she doesn’t punish herself. Because she’s Byronic. I know people respond to characters for many different reasons, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  6. On the contrary Shards have rhythms independent of the planet Odium's Tone wasn't a part of Roshar until the Recreance, but he always had one, is just one example

  7. I love reading Shallan as a character in a story, but I think I'd hate her if she was a real person that I had to actually interact with. She's racist, classist, her whole personality pivots on a moment-to-moment basis, she keeps important secrets from everyone in her life, she's able to straight up murder people and then make herself forget she had anything to do with it. This is all of course thematically appropriate, because Stormlight Archive is about mental illness and trauma, and sometimes the effects of those things can result in a person who's really hard to love and be patient with. I have had to remove people from my life because of the way their mental illness caused them to behave towards me. It's not their fault they are the way they are, but that doesn't change what you have to deal with by having them around.

  8. Oh my Shards. So, I'm listening to RoW and it said, "Kaladin picked up his sacks," but since I'm in band, I heard, "Kaladin picked up his sax(ophone)."

  9. Real life DID is caused by early childhood trauma, but Shallan is in a bit of a different situation because of the magic system. I think it’s notable that Shallan’s alters only started to appear when she started using Lightweaving to appear to be other people. It’s still possible that she was traumatised in early childhood, of course, I just don’t think it’s necessary that she was.

  10. It doesn't. The Spiritual is not the Beyond. There's shouldn't be a separate Spiritual Kelsier to meet. With Hoid? That'd be a sight. His Spiritual aspect should already be joined to his Cognitive aspect, when he holds Preservation he just lacks a Connection to the physical. Question is based on false premises. As far as we know, nope. The post-mortem being is pulled Beyond, but no Investiture leaves the cosmere. A Cognitive Shadow is not simply that being, but the Cognitive and Spiritual aspects being Invested to persist (or make an "impression" that thinks it's the person those aspects belonged to.) Kelsier, for instance isn't a Cognitive Shadow until he reaches the Well. Body stays, awareness gets pulled beyond, the Investiture returns to the cosmere. The soul, or Spiritweb, is your Identity, Connection, Investiture and possibly other things. We can see that CS Kelsier must have a Spiritweb still, as he can't leave Scadrial. That's an interesting question, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to, technically, though I have no idea by what means. Ehhhhh? I don't see what the Identity connection is, especially to Harmony. I'd assume that unless the Kelsier identity was wiped he'd still act like Kelsier, which he doesn't really. There's also a couple WoBs: And I think that both "born" and "a Roshar native" might preclude him being a Scadrian Cognitive Shadow 2.0. I've already touched on this, but there should not be a possibility of the Spiritweb being separate from the Cognitive Shadow. Whether or not a Cognitive Shadow is even fake isn't something that's inteneded to be known, but I'd say it could work one of two ways, the actual person, the self if you will, is pulled Beyond, the Investiture making up their Cognitive and Spiritual disperses but new Investiture is pushed in and takes the "shape" of the person's mind and soul, leaving an autonomous entity that is made in the image of the person, thinks and acts like the person, etc., but isnt the person. Or it could work like this; the person starts being pulled Beyond and the Cognitive and Spiritual start to diffuse, but an infusion of Investiture stabilises and anchors them to the cosmere, preventing them from being pulled Beyond automatically, leaving the original self, just with their native Investiture replaced by Investiture from a different source. We don't actually know he'll manage, do we? Though if he does I'd bet on Connection shenanigans. ¤_¤

  11. I have been a member of the Shard for 3 years (and 16 days). This place has been so fun, it seems like just yesterday that I joined, but it also feels like I’ve been here forever. Without further ado: appreciations! Mods, though none of you will read this (except Ene, who is listed separately), I would like to thank you for keeping this community one of the most inclusive, friendly, and wholesome ones I’ve seen. @AonEne, you were one of the first (if not *the* first) Shardbuddies I had. I’m soooo glad I got to meet you this summer. I can’t really words about how much your friendship means to me. I have yet to drink from the bottle of dubious soda. @Tesh, you’re too interesting and funny for your own good. No matter how tired I am, I will stay up to talk to you. Meeting you was awesome and it WILL happen again. Sneezing isn’t normal. @Butt Ad Venture, I would also stay up talking to you if it weren’t for the fact that both of us would just be yelling at each other to sleep :P. @xinoehp512, I love tLTing with you, looking at your pixel art, and just talking with you, though I don’t have much of an opportunity to do so. @Zephrun's Imperium, your art is SOO GOOD! I still need to find a place to put the piece you gave me on my wall, and I hope I can see you in person again, you’re just so nice to talk to. @Hen (Nna), [insert comment about our marriage here], but seriously, talking to you is so fun (and watching you freak out about aART, as well). The possibility of my meeting you is fluctuating, but you are one of the people who are at the top of my list to meet. DFTBA! @Mist, you are awesome. You always know the best thing to say. (Unlike me, as I have run out of things to say) Shortie (@Condensation), meeting you was fun, I could finally figure out how short you actually are. @Vapor, I love talking to you, and I can’t wait to see you in person again. @Emi, I haven’t been able to talk to you much, and I really miss it. I hope I can meet you this summer. @DramaQueen, your play was AWESOME!!!!!! (As are you). I want more geck pics. @Channelknight Fadran: your world building is really cool! (even though I still haven’t read anything of yours) @King of The Oreo: Your art is awesome and I wish I could join more of your drawing streams. I have run out of words, so I will give messages to people, then list those left on the list after my brain stoped languaging @Scarletfox: WE WILL PLAY SOON @Flying: YOU ARE SO CLOSE I WILL MEET YOU SOMEDAY @Lecky Twig: Borsalino > Zoro Fritz, Truthie, KoI, Spock, Jessie, BoP, Salad, Frustie, Exp, Dark, Enter, Flaffle, Rev, and anyone I may have forgotten, I wish I had words to express how much your friendship means to me. I love y'all. (sorry for the double ping, formatting was atrocious on that one)

  12. *fanfare plays* It's that time of year again. Artists! To your paper! Grab your ink pens! On your marks, get set, DRAW! Okay, so it's not technically October yet... BUT holy Shards am I busy this year. So I have decided that instead of drawing every day, I will draw every other day. And I'll start today! Which means that y'all will get your first piece tomorrow! Seriously, you guys have no idea how excited I've been about this. I bought new markers and paper for it months ago and on September 1st, I just kept refreshing the site, desperate for the moment the list came out. Since then, I've worked VERY hard every day to plan for each drawing and get references for it. The line up of drawings I have planned is gonna be wild and I think y'all will love it. I know I'll certainly be having fun! I'm so excited to go on this journey again with all of you! Now, I know that a lot of you like the drawings to be surprises, BUT I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a discord server where I post my process in depth. I'd post time lapses and gestures and progress photos there. If you're interested, you can join HERE. Here's to a great Inktober!!! - Star/Zi

Short answer: I needed a break and saw that y’all would be fine with that if I disappeared for a few days almost a week with the one glance into the chaos. Anyways, what do I have to share with you today? Well, a week or so ago, I was browsing some old writing I had on my phone, and I came across this piece that’s been there for well over a year. There really isn’t any point to it and I ain’t gonna share it with ya cos it was just something I wrote from a prompt I found, but this one part made me step back and wonder if I was the one that wrote that, cos… well, I dunno. It was different. K,loveyabai.

  15. I hadn't thought of it that way, but I definitely see what you're getting at. I agree that she's deeply flawed and that some male characters have done similar things and are still beloved by fans. According to the tvtropes page for Byronic Heroes, such a character tends to have 'a distaste for social institutions and norms and is disrespectful of rank and privilege, though he often has said rank and privilege himself.' I think one of the reasons people dislike Shallan is her classism, and in the first three books she defnitely holds onto her nobility, works very hard to get married to another noble and is dismissive of darkeyes and in some cases just walks all over them and insults them. From memory in ROW she has exactly one scene where she isn't with either high ranking lighteyes or other Radiants (who pretty much skipped the queue in the caste system), so we can't really say whether she's gotten over her prejudice. I definitely don't like Shallan, but I understand why she'd do the things I dislike about her. I've been thinking about why I dislike her so much, and I think that a lack of consequences for her actions might be one of them. Steal a priceless magical item from Jasnah, at worst the third most powerful woman in Alethkar, while pretending to be her ward? Stays as her ward, and when she confesses the theft to Jasnah's family the response is 'well that was dumb lol'. Force Kaladin, a darkeyed soldier to give up his boots, making him walk barefoot on the rocky ground that tore her feet up? Gets told off once, and then it becomes a joke at her wedding which Kaladin totally forgives her for. Victim blame slave soldiers for their own slavery and trauma, three of whom are currently protecting her and flying her across countries? BF will swoop in and tell the mean former slave not to tell her off about it. Major ROW spoilers: To be fair, there are several characters who have gotten off way more lightly than they arguably should have. Dalinar and Adolin come to mind. I do agree that Shallan's Byronic traits as a woman might be a factor in why she is disliked, but they're definitely not the only ones.

  16. Okay, I've finally read the rules and caught up and.... I've got bits - Mint's first post feels like two-legs-in-two-boats kinda thing. Like giving a risky thread-reveal option and then mitigating it with what would be commonly accepted option. Unsure about the read. Kinda agree with this, kinda feel the same. I vaguely remembering either suspecting a player or catching an elim by using this irrational read in some previous game :P. Interactions between Esooa and Illwei hmm - feel like one of them in an elim, but not both and rn leaning towards Illwei, which is kinda funny because - you can use the same principle but build a village trust circle. you see, alignment scanners need to have the location of the players to get scans right? and the earliest they get the scans the better it is for us. so I was thinking to reveal my location so that the Tineye can scan me, Lurcher protects me and one of the location roles [or me if I have a location role heh ] change my location so i cannot be killed the next cycle. It would work in theory and I would have already claimed but for the presence of elim alignment scanners in some Kas-esque kinda distribution :P. Though I do think that 4-member elim teams would not have a wasted role like alignment scanner. Lemme know if there is something I've missed, or else I'll let y'all know where I live ;). [and illwei if you're elim, thanks for giving us this idea :P] Chantara feels village-ish. And agree with someone about Mat-Archer, they do feel v-v. Hey, v-v could be like a new emoji which conveys....relief? satisfaction? :P. v-v also sounds like a French person rapidly agreeing with something/someone :P. Hmmmm, people find things similar when the situations are similar hmmm. And also just rushing through thoughts here, something about what Mat said. We should get kinda an idea about the elim team house composition because if they get a successful kill off this cycle, then we know that there is at least one in their team belong to the same house as the N1 victim [this is assuming no one has claimed their houses to elims in PMs and they would then know the names of the house they're missing, if there are any]. So, it'd make sense for the Night Crew to target the N1 victim so we'd know the location of at least one of the elim members. Elim reads down to Mint and Illwei. Rollover is at like 3:30 am for me and just had my second covid dose and arms heavy, knees weak, though there's no vomit on sweater just yet :P. imma head to sleep bai. Also, have I mentioned this? Arenta sounds like an Italian pronouncing the word rent :P.

  17. We actually have a basic Akinah map, courtesy of Kabsal: There's some basic similarities but overall I don't think I'd say it indicates anything more than coincidence, personally. But that's not the first place Aons have been theorized on Roshar, so who knows, might be something weird going on.

  18. Prompt 1; Crystal, featuring Pheonix Blaze from CBST with a dream crystal. Okay, so I gotta say right off the bat, I'm not ridiculously proud of this one. I do think there are some things I did super well, like Pheo's hand and the crystal. But that said, I really think the pencil drawing turned out better than the final product. That happens sometimes. A big reason for that is his fire hair; fire hair is hard, y'all. So, I tried a few new things with this one. One of them was the shine on the crystal and holy crap was that an experiment that worked. The other one is something I'm still working at. Pheonix is Asian (which is a more recent change) and I'm really not used to drawing that. I'm definitely getting better, but I have a lot of work to do. Anyway, I hope you like this first installment. I will be back again not tomorrow, but Monday with more art.

  20. My brother and I want to create Roshar in Minecraft, but we need a little help in the following areas: 1. Topographical Map: M will be using a world editor to do the heavy lifting, so we won't be building the landscape block by block. In order to do this, he needs a topographical map of Roshar. I don't really have the skills to make this myself, so help would be much appreciated. 2. Structures: Once the world is painted, we will need a sizable team of Minecraft players to actually build the structures found throughout Roshar. These will include the warcamps, cities like Kholinar, Urithiru, and Kharbranth, and even ships in port. Some of the building work will just be designing generic houses to copy with World Painter, and some will just be massive building projects. To do this ourselves would take years, so help would be MUCH appreciated. The world download will be made available to all volunteers when completed, and probably to others, though not through this site.

  21. Intro to the Cosmere So, you've read some of Brandon Sanderson's books, and you liked them enough that you want to talk about it with other fans online. But then it doesn't take you long to realize that you have no idea what everyone's talking about. Shards of Adonalsium? Realmatic theory? Worldhoppers? "I don't remember any of this in the books I read!" Fear not! This page is for you! What is the Cosmere? The Cosmere is the fictional universe in which many of Brandon Sanderson's novels take place. Stories set in the Cosmere share an underlying theorem of magic, a creation myth, a cosmology, and a few other key concepts. Characters and cultures can (and do) cross over between worlds. While early connections merely consist of a few scattered Easter eggs, they become more obvious and meaningful with time. Seeing and understanding it can greatly enhance your experience with his books -- there's a reason we can't stop talking about it! We've designed this page to point out all of the main things you may have missed, or that Brandon has said in interviews with fans, so that you can discover the secret world hidden in Brandon's books and be ready to participate in the discussion as quickly and as effortlessly as possible. For a more in-depth answer to this question, keep scrolling. For Brandon's own short answer to this question, see the FAQ on his website. For the complete list of works set in the Cosmere, see here. A note on spoilers: This post may contain minor spoilers for some Cosmere books--particularly Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. Links to the Coppermind wiki often contain many spoilers. If you haven't read all the books, we would encourage you not to read beyond the reading order recommendations! Does it matter? Knowledge of the Cosmere is generally non-essential to understand and enjoy Sanderson's work as each story/series stands on its own. That said, understanding the Cosmere can enhance your experience and give you something extra to chew on if you'd like to dive deeper into Sanderson's universe. So if you start looking into the Cosmere and find all of this to be overwhelming or uninteresting, that's totally okay. Take your time, or just don't even worry about it! Sanderson ultimately has plans for some books that will involve the overarching story of the Cosmere more directly. At this time, experiencing the Cosmere primarily involves connecting the universe's basic concepts and identifying characters who show up in unexpected places and seem to know more than they let on. Reading Order There is no “right order” to read the Cosmere in. Publication order is a common suggestion, which allows you to experience the books as if reading them from the start, but you should read the Cosmere in whichever order you most enjoy. If you want to try something new, branch off to a different world or series. If you really like the series/world you've been reading, then keep going down that road. Most reading orders will point out a few books that can be considered “starter” books. From these you can dive deeper into a particular series or branch off to something new. Some commonly recommended starting points include: Elantris -- If you like the idea of reading in publication order, this is where you should begin. This is the first book Brandon published. Mistborn: The Final Empire -- The original Mistborn trilogy (Era 1) is the most frequently recommended place to start. Warbreaker -- This is a standalone book that's available for free on Brandon's website. The Emperor's Soul -- This Hugo Award-winning novella is a great way to experience Sanderson's strengths with very minimal commitment. The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive) -- This epic is far from complete and requires the reader to place a lot of trust in Sanderson--it opens with a lot of worldbuilding and a slow start. But if truly epic fantasy is your thing and incomplete series don't give you pause, this is perhaps Brandon's finest work. For an interactive reading guide, see this page. Brandon's own recommendations can be found on his website. Two final notes on reading order: We highly encourage reading Warbreaker sometime before Words of Radiance. We highly encourage reading Mistborn: Secret History after The Bands of Mourning. Adonalsium, Shards, and Investiture Adonalsium and the Cosmere A long time ago, there existed an entity called Adonalsium. Very little is known about who or what Adonalsium truly was. Adonalsium's touch suffused the Cosmere, and many worlds, such as Roshar, were grown by it and bear its design. It was the source of all of the Cosmere's magic and was said to control the powers of creation. One day, Adonalsium broke into sixteen fragments in an event that became known as the Shattering of Adonalsium. Why or how Adonalsium was shattered remains a mystery. The Shards of Adonalsium Sixteen of those who were present at the Shattering took up these fragments, or Shards, and became godlike themselves. They went their separate ways, (well, some did) creating worlds and seeding the Cosmere with more life. The magic of the Cosmere continues to stem from these Shards. Each Shard has an "intent" that it strives to fulfill, which gradually molds and warps the holder of the Shard, the Vessel, until they are absolutely incapable of acting against it. This nature is so dominating that both the Shards and the Vessels are usually referred to simply by the Shard's intent. Note, however, that the intent of a Shard cannot be precisely conveyed in a single word, and there is some room for interpretation as to what each Shard's intent incorporates. Some Shards include Ambition, Autonomy, Honor, Ruin, and Devotion. Though these demigods may appear godlike to mortals, they are neither all-powerful nor all-knowing. Shards may be Splintered--a process which leaves the Vessel dead and the power of the Shard dispersed. Shards are also able to subdivide themselves into avatars, each with a distinct identity, though the exact nature of these entities and how they relate to the Shard and its Vessel is unclear. Investiture, Splinters, and Slivers Investiture is the catch-all term for magical energy in the Cosmere. Investiture, which comes from the Shards, is the power source for all of the Cosmere's magic systems. Most humans in the Cosmere have some innate Investiture, which makes up their soul. Humans generally obtain magical powers when their spirit (sometimes called a spirit web) becomes suffused with Investiture. A Splinter is a portion of a Shard's Investiture that has been severed from it, either willingly or unwillingly. Sometimes, these Splinters will develop sentience and sapience, and they can become highly intelligent beings. (Note that non-Splintered Shards can still have Splinters.) A Sliver, on the other hand, is a person who once held a significant portion of a Shard's power. Holding that much power stretched and expanded their soul. The Worlds There was an original world named Yolen. Yolen was home to three intelligent races (human, dragon, and Sho Del), and is the planet that the original sixteen Vessels came from. All human life in the Cosmere either came from Yolen or was modeled after it. After the Shattering, the Shards spread and settled down on many different worlds throughout the Cosmere. Planets where one or more of the Shards settled down are sometimes known as "major Shardworlds." Other planets, where there is still life and some magic, but no Shards, are "minor Shardworlds." Major and minor Shardworlds include the following: World Stories First of the Sun Sixth of the Dusk Nalthis Warbreaker Roshar The Stormlight Archive Scadrial Mistborn Sel Elantris, The Emperor's Soul Taldain White Sand Threnody Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Worldhoppers and Notable Characters A small number of enterprising individuals in the Cosmere have learned how to travel between these worlds. These worldhoppers have a huge variety of backgrounds and motivations. Some worldhoppers are acting individually while others are part of an organization, like the Seventeenth Shard. Hoid Among the Cosmere's worldhoppers, there is none so prominent as the ever-mysterious Hoid, originally of Yolen. Hoid, which isn't even his real name, is thousands of years old, having been present at the Shattering of Adonalsium. Whatever happened to Hoid in his past, he's no longer exactly human, at least in the traditional sense. He has a way of knowing where he needs to be at the right time, and he uses this to subtly influence events behind the scenes. Hoid's true motives and goals are as hidden as his real name. Hoid has appeared in every Cosmere novel so far, though he is often in disguise and will occasionally use pseudonyms, such as Dust, Topaz, Cephandrius, and Wit. Trying to spot him in every book is part of the fun of the Cosmere. He seems to prefer disguising himself as a beggar, an informant, a storyteller, or a jester, so look for him to be playing one of these roles. He is also often, though not always, described as having white hair and an angular, hawklike or arrowlike face. Among many other things, Hoid has the ability to Lightweave (create illusions), he can heal from extreme injuries, he doesn't age, and he has a way to dilate time so that he doesn't have to wait as long for important moments. The planned series Dragonsteel will tell the story of Hoid's origin and the Shattering of Adonalsium, and Hoid is planned to be a main character in the final Mistborn trilogy. Khriss and Nazh Khriss, from Taldain, is the worldhopper who writes the Ars Arcanum at the end of each book, and she's the most knowledgeable of anyone—including Hoid—about the Cosmere as a whole. Khriss has been described as dark-skinned, with her hair woven into tight braids. Nazh is her assistant, a worldhopper from Threnody, tasked with collecting various maps and drawings from throughout the Cosmere. They are often included in the books with his personal notes to Khriss in his distinctive handwriting. One of his most identifying characteristics is his tendency to use Threnodite swears, such as "shadows". He has also been described as lanky, with a narrow face and sand-colored hair. The Three Realms Almost everything in the Cosmere has a body, a mind, and a soul, and each exists in one of three Realms. The Physical Realm is world of the body, where physical objects exist. This Realm is the only one that normal human beings consciously perceive. The Cognitive Realm, also known as Shadesmar, is the world of the mind. The Cognitive Realm is strange and alien: Water is solid, land is fluid, and shadows point backwards. Thoughts and ideas take on real form in this Realm. After a person dies, a leftover impression of their mind, their Cognitive Shadow, will linger shortly in the Cognitive Realm before passing on. The Cognitive Shadow can sometimes persist for longer periods of time, however, by various magical means. Worldhoppers have learned to use junctions between the Physical Realm and the Cognitive Realm called perpendicularities to cross between them. Often, these perpendicularities can be found where the power of a Shard is concentrated into a pool of liquid that fans call "Shardpools." The Cognitive Realm is of particular interest to worldhoppers because distances are compressed there in places where there is little or no mental activity (such as outer space), meaning worldhoppers can use the Cognitive Realm to actually walk from one planet to another. Depending on the Shardworld, the Cognitive Realm can be an extremely dangerous place. The Spiritual Realm is the world of the soul. Once you reach the Spiritual Realm, there's no such thing as space or distance anymore, just Connection between people and places. Those who peer into the Spiritual Realm can see all the branching possibilities of the future. The power of the Shards resides mostly (usually) in the Spiritual Realm. Chronology While in most cases we don't know how many years take place between books in different series, we do know the chronological order of most of them. In order, they are: White Sand Elantris The Emperor's Soul Mistborn Era 1 Warbreaker Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Stormlight 1-5 Mistborn Era 2 Stormlight 6-10 Mistborn Era 3 Sixth of Dusk Mistborn Era 4 For more information, see this post. More Resources The best way to dive into the Cosmere is to find a fan community to interact with. While you may see a lot of confusing conversations going on, just ask questions and you'll be caught up before you know it. The 17th Shard offers both forums and a Discord chat server to this end. The other two important resources to be aware of are the Coppermind wiki and Arcanum, both operated by the 17th Shard. But beware that BOTH of these resources include heavy spoilers for all of Brandon's books! The Coppermind is a wiki covering all of Brandon Sanderson's works, with an emphasis on the Cosmere. Just dive right in by searching for pages that interest you, or by browsing through the page categories. Arcanum is an archive of everything Brandon has said publicly about his stories, drawing from interviews, social media, book signings, and more. There's a LOT to learn about the Cosmere just by hearing directly from the man himself! Search for specific terms or browse entries by tags. We could always use help adding more information to the Coppermind or transcribing audio on Arcanum, and you don't need to be an expert to help. Stop by the #coppermind and #arcanum channels in our Discord server to help out. There's no better way to learn more about the Cosmere than by helping improve these resources! Note: This is an update to the original Cosmere 101 topic by @Zas678. Feel free to recommend additional content, but please avoid major spoilers!

  22. What's something weirdly specific that you like? For me, it seems that I'll just throw my money at game developers who let me run around a somewhat abandoned city with guns and superpowers and discover what happened to it through letters or recordings. I've loved the Bioshock and Dishonored series, as well as the 2017 Prey and Control (if you count a space station or eldritch building as a city). It occurred to me that this is how a Mistborn game would probably end up, and I'm here for it. I also realised that I like scifi/fantasy because I can experience things I'll never see in real life (magic, aliens/prehistoric animals, superhuman abilities) but I'm also really interested in seeing how these fantastic elements affect how people do boring things like get to work in the morning or go through the daily grind of studying at school. I don't know why, but the idea of something like working a desk job when the filing cabinet might walk off when you need to get something out of it is really cool.

  23. The Bronze Pulses are likely Rhythms derived from Preservation, especially the pulsing of the Well of Ascension itself being the Rhythm of Preservation. So, it is a cosmere wide phenomena, you just need to be given "ears" for it. Either innately, like a Listener, or as a power, like a Seeker.

  25. I'm not sure I'm willing to ascribe actual importance to the Seventh Land. By what mechanism? Why would they leave? Why would they think they could leave? It feels implausible to me that they'd just up and leave to go to some other planet when we've gotten no hints that they're hoarding provisions, finishing up their business and such, as you'd presumably do if you were gonna leave. It might be similar to Veden people having Unkalaki ancestry. The metallic makes me think dragon, so possibly (partial) descendants of stable human-dragon crossbreeds. Human just like the Unkalaki and Herdazians, but not 100% human genetic stock. I'm inclined to think Adonalsium, but someone already brought up a WoB that makes it clear that it's not a direct basis. I'm curious how they could be Splinters, mechanically, unless they functionally have Breaths. I'm assuming that other Fused have seen El incarnate on multiple occasions, if Lezian says that he rips out his carapace and replaces it, I'm inclined to believe him. I read El's whole deal as a compulsive behaviour, unhealthy fascination/obsession with humans (mirroring the Plate that traditionally only humans had) or both. Or something like that. I find that very hard to believe, at least as the basis for the Long Trail and the One in universe. ¤_¤

  27. Ah, this is old but I feel like I should help clarify... Kar didn't really mean that you're splitting hairs, he meant that classifications are fundamentally at least somewhat arbitrary. Cosmere magics aren't distinct things, they're just natural phenomena, "magic systems" are just how parts of these phenomena that interact with humanity are termed in-book by the author and by the readers. So one could make an argument both for whether or not fabrial science is mechanical Surgebinding or a separate magic system. One could also give separate classifications to other spren bonds (like between megafauna like the Tai Na and the spren that allow them to break the square cube law) than the Nahel Bonds of Surgebinders / Knights Radiant.

  33. I missed a big chunk in the middle of this story, so I can't really speak to continuity or plot. I hope it's alright if I just note a few things that stood out to me: A few lines came off as a little awkward to read: "He smiled at me..." "I assumed that you were justified..." "Because it's not like I made a few silly..." Not wrong gramaticially (as far as I can tell) but a little sticky. "I almost succeeded" Nice line! "I can tell you're not attracted to her..." Ouch! I don't know if that was intentional, but that sounds harsh for N. In context it makes perfect sense, but the phrasing sounds like a barb directed at W since the reveal about E's sexuality doesn't come until later. I agree with @C_Vallion that the switch in conversation between W and N from pretty heavy relationship stuff to "what do you want to do now?" Seems fast. I'm missing a break of some sort between these modes. Terminal illness is a heavy topic to cover. It seems like you're handling it with care and depth, well done! Thanks for sharing!

  34. No Nameable reason would be a better way to phrase that, and I do believe I have one. The Way of Kings, WoK really give Shallan two big disadvantages We are introduced to Kaladin first and the narrative is mainly focused on him. Which causes Shallan's chapters to feel like distractions rather than anything meaningful It takes Shallan 100 pages to even reveal a plan, and then takes another 564 pages before she even does it, which feels realy stale. There's a nice video looking at the negative community reactions I think you would like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ6Ymy2ZbDQ

  44. i dont know if Ruin put it there. It was probably Vasher and Shashara Walin Does Nightblood contain any of Ruin's Investiture? Like, not atium, but... Brandon Sanderson Yes, technically; and I'm not wiggling around that, because technically, location in the Cosmere and who belongs to what gets really weird, right? Because Ruin's Investiture is everywhere--but I'm not talking that way. I'm talking the way you actually mean it. Legion Release Party (Sept. 19, 2018)
