  1. So at the end of Rhythm of War, we see a bunch of Fused collectively turn away from Odium and "go listener". Earlier, in Ch. 111, after Leshwi and her band of followers fought to keep Lezian's followers from slaughtering the human civilians and unconscious Radiants, she tries to convince the survivors to surrender to her so she could find a way to "explain to Raboniel" (to talk her way out of her betrayal)... And then Rlain "channels Teft" to set everybody straight how a line had been crossed that could not be un-crossed, which she soon realizes is the case: Leswhi goes unconscious when the Sibling re-erects Urithiru's Odiumshield against voidish powers, but revives when they transfer her and the others to Narak via Oathgate, where she "hovers over" to talk to Kaladin before going off with Venli. So Leshwi didn't lose her ability to fly via Voidlight, nor even her access to Voidlight, due to her betrayal, yet Odium had sent Fused and Regals to execute them? Well we can assume that once she dies, as a Fused like Lezian she'd be returned to Braize, there to stay until either a listener/singer host in the Everstorm is open to her, or if Odium directly summons her back to him on Roshar (as was done "the way before the storms", as El called it, to pull Lezian back after only a day on Braize). She thinks Odium can block access to her coming back via the Everstorm, senttencing her to eternal torture as the Heralds were (and without the release of breaking sending her back to Roshar)... ...but Odium (Rayse) claims he could not do that while talking to Dalinar in setting the terms of the contest in Ch. 112! Unless Odium was lying, that suggests that he has no way of keeping a Fused on Braize against their will if a willing host in the Everstorm were available. (Not that Leswhi would know this.) At the same time, at Thaylen Fields in Oathbringer, when a Fused named Turash sasses him about having to follow Dalilnar as Odium's chosen champion, he calmly threatens him into submission with "you will follow me, Turash, or I will reclaim that which gives you persistent life." So maybe Odium can't block the Fused from cyclically returning via Everstorm (assuming a willing host), but he can "de-Fuse" a Fused? If so, why weren't Leswhi and her followers "unplugged" on the spot? Did he intend to torture them for a few days and then unplug them before the Everstorm? I mean, all these penalties are in their heads, controlling or cowing them with fear. I'm starting to get the feeling Raysodium wasn't the most forthright about what he could and couldn't do, LOL, and why would he have been!

  2. Fade glanced furtively around before ducking into an alleyway. I’m already late to the… *Crash* His arms flailed as the street suddenly fell from under his feet. After a short drop, he hit the muddy ground and lay for a moment, stunned. What in the Lord Ruler? Fade got dazedly to his feet and tried to get his bearings. He was at the bottom of some sort of hole, dug into the bottom the alleyway. “You’re trespassing! That’ll be five meal tokens.” An elderly skaa woman was glaring down at Fade from the edge of the pit, leaning heavily on a knobbly walking stick. For a moment, Fade was unable to find any words. “Meal tokens? You old fool! You’ll regret keeping me from my…” *Thunk* Arenta let a rope down into the pit and clambered down to where Fade had dropped onto the floor, muttering to herself, “I said five meal tokens, not to insult me. Kids these days…” As she felt through the man’s coat for anything of value, Arenta noticed that Fade’s eyes had gone glassy, and his chest didn’t move. Guess I hit you a bit too hard. That’ll teach you to talk like that to your elders. Or it would, anyway. Surprisingly, Fade’s corpse had a few boxings on it, a rarity among skaa. Perhaps more surprising, since few skaa could read, a folded parchment had been stuffed in on of the inner coat pockets. Reading the note, a rare smile grew on Arenta’s face. Guess you deserved that whack to the head, and a harder one would have suited you even more. She bent over and wiped some of the ash smudges from around the body’s eyes. Sure enough, intricate tattoo’s adorned Fade’s face, a sure mark of an obligator, albeit a relatively minor one. In addition to her many other talents, Arenta knew the skaa rumor mill like the back of her hand, and word of the disguised ministry agent spread quickly to the inhabitants of the tenement buildings near her territory. Most of the skaa were too beaten down to care, but a few were worried enough to start pointing fingers at other potential spies. Fade was a Ministry Agent! 3. Anyone have any objections to me doing an inktober drawing every OTHER day? And starting, oh... *checks watch* Now?

  4. *fanfare plays* It's that time of year again. Artists! To your paper! Grab your ink pens! On your marks, get set, DRAW! Okay, so it's not technically October yet... BUT holy Shards am I busy this year. So I have decided that instead of drawing every day, I will draw every other day. And I'll start today! Which means that y'all will get your first piece tomorrow! Seriously, you guys have no idea how excited I've been about this. I bought new markers and paper for it months ago and on September 1st, I just kept refreshing the site, desperate for the moment the list came out. Since then, I've worked VERY hard every day to plan for each drawing and get references for it. The line up of drawings I have planned is gonna be wild and I think y'all will love it. I know I'll certainly be having fun! I'm so excited to go on this journey again with all of you! Now, I know that a lot of you like the drawings to be surprises, BUT I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a discord server where I post my process in depth. I'd post time lapses and gestures and progress photos there. If you're interested, you can join HERE. Here's to a great Inktober!!! - Star/Zi

  12. Well, the next time we see a Venli POV in I-7, she reflects that "Odium's grand purpose for her meant turning her into a showpiece", telling the "version of her story" that "Odium had instructed her to tell". Whether or not that was a direct instruction via Odiumvision or indirectly through a Fused, that should suggest that Odium was not surprised by her having Envoyform, and had a specific reason for her being in it. Besides, I suspect that unlike bonding a "normal" Rosharan spren to take on another form, the "forms of power" that require a voidspren have those voidspren specifically sent by an act of Odium. They don't seem to occur naturally on Roshar, and is one of the reasons the Radiants of the False Desolation were so shocked to find that somehow, despite there being no "real" Desolation with the Fused and the return of Odium, that Ba-Ado-Mishram was able "to grant the parsh forms of power and Voidlight" in his absence.

  13. 100% this. He'd already messed everything up, by awakening Kaladin from his depressive catatonia. All he had to do was keep it in his pants for a few more minutes - instead he undid Vyre's effective work. He was worse than the totally-nuts Fused, because he's running around actively kicking over sandcastles.

  15. Saw this earlier, I'm definitely going to be watching it, but this trailer... The Good: The environments look pretty sweet. The village, totally looks like Randland. Rand is a great bit of casting (but let's see if he can act). Perrin looks like great casting too. Moraine looks great, wish she was shorter, but I will take perfect except for height on this one. The Meh: Some of the effects look like they would be great for a free phone game, where it's dazzle and no substance (and really you can do all that, but no color shifting cloak? Really?). Matt, one of my all-time favorite characters, looks like they cast for cool not so much for mischievous. This is based on the Dagger scene, but the jury is still out on this one, they could get him right (even Brandon struggled with Matt afterall) Lan, seems a bit like the Aragorn problem from the LOTR movies, went for the look but from the admittedly small bit of information, seems to be lacking the gravitas. Vigo Mortenson is a great Aragorn, but his voice is garbage in those movies (he actually squeaks a couple of times). The Bad: Maybe I am just an old crank, but everything seems like it's set to 11. Not every moment needs to be emoted at 100%, one of the things that I like about WoT is that it has so much time for small moments. The jury is still out on this one as well, but hopefully they steer clear of the every moment is fraught with tension brand of storytelling that the trailer seems like it's set to deliver. Nyneave pushing Egwene off a cliff? What? This is just bizarre, but you know, the jury is still out on this one too because it's a different thing right? You have to make some changes to the story to fit the medium, ok, let's see if this works. The What???? So can anyone tell me what the heck this is? I don't remember a dual axe wielder (who do you think this is??), and what is this scene supposed to be? I am totally baffled here: I do have to say, the Myrdraal look pretty sick, but looking closer, it does beg the question:

  16. Laonin walked through the Alleycity. Since becoming both literally homeless and one of the Homeless, he had been looking for a suitable place to claim for his own. He had come across many people in this strange place, from the DA to TUBA to any other number of other Homeless. He tried to mind his own business for the most part, as getting involved only seemed to end in death and despair. He hadn't been here long but for the time that he had, he had heard rumors of a great war which had happened in the past that threatened this entire place. A war which it still seemed to be recovering from. He passed ruined buildings, people huddled in corners, and others who rushed from place to place, either needing to be somewhere or needing to be away from somewhere else. There were of course many powerful people in this city. They went about their business, doing important things in important places with important people. Running around waving magic circles in the air, or shining bright with some inner light, or getting into fights with other people. Of course when fights between powerful people happened, those around without power seemed to suffer even more. Most of the people in this place seemed more concerned with trying to spike unsuspecting travelers with sweet delights, or trying to stop the people doing that, or creating strife between guilds. That isn't to say there weren't people out there trying to serve the greater good. There was at least one hospital set up that he had seen, but the care that had been given to most residents of the Alleycity was lacking in his opinion. Buildings had been left in rubble, people without homes. Countless dead caused by power hungry people with no care for the common folk. As far as Laonin could tell there was no central government to this city, and that meant there was no one keeping chaos in check, or rebuilding what had been lost here. He walked up to a ruined building he had been studying for several weeks. It seemed as though during the 7 day war it had been destroyed by flying rubble from an explosion in the distance. He had explored as much of it as he could get to, and had asked the few remaining denizens of this area for as much detail as they could remember. He pulled out his toolkit and set to work once again, carving into soulstone. He would restore this building, and hopefully with it at his disposal he could continue to restore the ruined parts of this city to their former glory. He took the soulstamp he had been working on for weeks, now finally finished, and pressed it to the cornerstone. The seal sunk into the stone, and he could almost feel the building trying to determine if his work was good enough for it to allow the change to happen. Suddenly the ruined building before him was replaced with a sturdy, well kept forge. "Well, that took long enough," Laonin muttered, "I should have just tried telling the darned thing the explosion missed it in the first place. Of course it still wanted to be in working order!" Wiping his hand on his pants, Laonin walked through the now intact doorway, surveying what he saw before him. The building seemed well built of course, one of the reasons he had chosen it in the first place. Something that had been created well was all the more likely to want to return to the vision its maker had had for it in the first place. He walked over to the anvil, and was pleased to see that the rust which had previously been coating its surface was now gone. It seemed it had considered itself a part of this place, and when the roof had repaired itself, came to the conclusion that the rains wouldn't have been able to reach it. It was a decently sized room, with lots of hooks and shelves on the walls for tools and equipment. Most of those were missing, either destroyed or looted by people trying to scrounge for valuables. That suited him just fine, he preferred to use his own tools anyway. Now to get himself situated. ----- A sharp ringing sound echoed out the front door, almost like the beating of a heart, a sign that this place had come back to life, and once again its blood was pumping. Laonin stood over the anvil, beating a hunk of metal with his hammer, forcing the impurities out of it. He did this for the time it took for the metal to start cooling and then shoved it back in the forge to heat up again, piling more charcoal on it. While it heated he perused the room, taking in the changes he had made to it the last few weeks. He had moved all of his belongings in, meager as they were, and the place had an almost homey feel to it. He had of course been concerned that the building would relapse into rubble, but after the first night passed without incident came to the conclusion that he had been correct in his assessment that the building wanted to return to its intended purpose. He had since been refitting his tools, as they had been through some tough wear and tear since his last chance to repair them. He had also been making good use of one of his soulcasters, converting some nearby rubble into iron with which to forge. Some would argue he could have simply soulcast it into steel directly, and cut out the purifying process, but he never really trusted a fabrial to do what he could do on his own. He trusted his own hands. Thankfully there was still a supply of charcoal in the back room, as it had been blocked off previously from looters by the rubble. He didn't quite have the skill with a soulcaster to create coal. Plus he had heard that excessive use of soulcasters could have ill effect on the nerves, so he tried to avoid it as much as he could. Which meant he would need to find a way to keep his metal supplies stocked. Something for a different day, he concluded, as he retrieved the now glowing metal from the forge and continued to hammer it into steel. After several hours of hard labor, Laonin cleaned and hung his tools on the wall, and put the forge to rest, to be reawakened tomorrow. He then ate some dinner in the sparse living quarters on the second floor, and set out, toolbox in hand. He had found his next renovation project, a tall building which seemed to have been crushed by something large, given the enormous footprint left nearby. While most of the building was destroyed, the first floor was relatively intact, and housed several families of people who had nowhere else to go. He spent the remainder of his day inspecting the building for damage, taking note of anything and everything that could affect structural integrity once it was repaired. Thankfully there seemed to be some records of what this building had looked like before its destruction, which made his task a whole lot easier. As he was working a rugged looking woman approached him. "What are you doing?" she asked, looking at Laonin making measurements and writing down notes on a sketch pad. "I'm trying to determine how easy this mess will be to clean up. This building used to be able to house a dozen families comfortably, near as I can tell. Now there's a handful lying about in the dirt, and with the holes in the walls it can't be much warmer in here that out there anyway." Laonin replied. The woman looked surprised for a moment. "You mean you're going to rebuild this. Where will we stay when you tear it down? Do you know how few buildings there are with even this much room? Why not build somewhere else that won't disrupt those few living here, and let us be." she said turning away. "I don't intend to tear it down, I'm simply going to fix it where it stands. And seeing as how there doesn't seem to be anyone barging in with deeds of ownership, you'll be first in line to claim housing once it's done." The woman stopped and turned back toward Laonin, a flicker of hope in her eyes. "Really? You're really going to fix it? Why would you do that?" she said, a hint of suspicion in her voice. Despite the hope she felt, her life had been hard enough to know no one would do something like this without a reason. "In my opinion, this place has seen enough power hungry men to last an eternity. I figured someone needed to step up and fix the damage they've caused. I know one man can't fix everything. But even if I only help one person, then that's good enough for me. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to continue with my work." he said, turning back to the wall. The woman looked at him for another moment, the flicker in her eyes warming to an ember in her chest. She turned and went to talk with a group huddled nearby. Some didn't react but the rest watched this dwarf of a man continue to work. Not knowing what to do, they continued doing what they had been, surviving. After doing a preliminary assessment of the building, Laonin headed home. Strange, he thought, only a short time here and I already think of it as home. Have I really been so desperate for some stability? Arriving back at the forge he let himself in, and locked the door. He climbed the stairs to his small bedroom, and after changing, lay down in bed. He let out a deep sigh. Tonight he would sleep well. He finally had a goal, and the means to see it through. Turning onto his side, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. --------

  17. Hi All, I had a quick look but couldn't see a post on this topic so wanted to make one. Since my re-read of the Mistborn books, including Secret History, I started getting a sneaky suspicion that the Hero of Ages prophecy doesn't necessarily solely have to apply to Sazed - I then recently came across a post where someone had laid out all the Hero of Ages prophecy quotes and I think this is worth a discussion. We all know that Brandon loves pulling a fast one on us, hiding hints very early for much later pay-off. My theory essentially suggests that multiple people can fulfil the Hero of Ages prophecy - and that the next person to do so will be Kelsier in Era 3 or 4. Now I don't know whether this will mean he will take up the shards, as that isn't necessarily a pre-requisite of being the Hero of Ages as per the quotes, but that he is in someway destined to save the world. I have laid out the quotes below, and left some comments underneath some of them. As you can see, since the release of Secret History, there are a lot of these prophecies that match Kelsier very nicely. Let me know what you all think of this - I can't help but think that many of these prophecies can be linked with Kelsier too nicely given what we know since Secret History and Mistborn Era 2. As always, rip it to pieces.

I haven't done a line by line look at the rules yet, but my initial assumption is a stronger than usual elim team. Since 16/4 splits so nicely, I'm feeling a 4 man team with good roles, but I'd believe 5. What do y'all think? Esooa-Illwei not e-e, or Esooa is playing us for fools. Both are possible. 22. When it comes to Marvel movies, I've developed a critical eye for them because most of them follow a standard formula. Most of them have a weak villain. And they don't have anything of significance to say about the world around us. So when I say Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of the best Marvel movies in years, I don't say that lightly. I think Shang-Chi succeeds where Black Panther falters. It's not bogged down by its existence in the MCU, its themes and message are clearly developed and shown and all of the characters have some sort of importance to the story. I wasn't sure how I felt about this movie leading up to its release. I think I was afraid it would be another misstep like the aforementioned Black Panther or Captain Marvel, movies that Marvel insisted were going to be culturally significant but were held back by the Marvel formula. Shang-Chi proves that Marvel needs to give more creative freedom to its creators like Destin Daniel Cretton, who was obviously given a lot of freedom to tell the story he wanted. This film feels more like a Chinese martial arts film that is given a Marvel twist rather than a Marvel film given an Asian twist. The fights are extremely well-choreographed and well shot, making them look great to watch. The visuals are also very good, and there are some shots that look amazing. You can tell a lot of care went into this production and a lot of care went into the story as well. Every major character in this movie has something to do and a great character arc to match it. Every one of them is relatable. Simu Liu puts a lot of energy into his performance, which is also helped immensely by the fact that he did most of his own stunts and fights. Tony Leung is great as Wenwu (or the Mandarin, but even the characters in the movie don't call him that) and I would hesitate to even call him the antagonist because he is much more complex. Meng'er Zhang also is great as Xialing, Shang-Chi's sister. I think I enjoyed her arc the most in the movie. The biggest risk in this movie is Awkwafina. She's a great comedian but she's given a lot of the overbearing Marvel humor, which makes her character seem less interesting. But being an Asian-American myself, I related a lot to her position and her struggle in life. I think her arc is a great message for Asian-Americans but the film should have put more emphasis on it rather than the humor. She does have some funny lines, but they could have toned it down. The only other issue I have is the amount of exposition in the film. Because Shang-Chi is introducing a new world and part of this universe, there's a lot of explaining that it has to do. Fortunately, a lot of information is presented in a good way, but there are just a couple of scenes that could have used some work. If you like movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, chances are you'll like this film. It has a lot to appreciate and a lot that Hollywood can learn from. It is a wonderful representation of Asian culture (a good 30-40 minutes in total is completely spoken in Mandarin) and has many things that can entertain international audiences. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gets a 9/10 from me and you should go watch it in a theater, on the biggest screen you can.

I'm afraid I'll never catch up if I try to catch up on critiques from nearly 7 months of absence so I'm just going to pick up with the current week. I hope that's alright. I can't comment on the pacing in relation to recent events in the story, but this felt like a good recovery/recap chapter that covered relationships and the ongoing issues for this MC. (Good timing for me to return) A few places felt a little wordy and ponderous but not bad. I feel like part of that is the old world tone and texture. I enjoyed the sparing parts the best, but very much needed the later conversation to know what was happening and to put it in context. Nothing felt unnecessary. Three line by lines caught my eye: The paragraph starting: "She nodded and then lunged in..." "series of motions that was (were) almost indistinct..." "But she was still lagging when the paused..., both breathing heavily." The last part of this sentence reads awkwardly for me. "Yeah, I didn't either." This felt out of place with the rest of the dialogue between these two characters who both speak fairly formally. Maybe just more modern than the rest? I am enjoying getting back to your story, thanks for sharing!

How does he know for example that the fisherman will take him to where someone else would take him to Vasher? In light of the WoB above, it might be possible that Nightblood is not pure steel but a steel/atium hybrid. This would explain the Ruin aspect, as well as why the smoke is black.

We know that this basically identical to Earth due to some other calculations. Thus Gravity = 11.7684 m/s2 Radius = 9567.15 km Thus the Mass should come out to 1.61422 * 10^25 Kilograms. Density of 4.398419618528610187 g/cm^3 We do not know the year or day length as well as we do for Roshar, so cannot calculate the Orbital Period or Angular Velocity or any of that. At least not as of yet.

  32. Sorry to double post, but this is pretty cool stuff. So I was looking more into scale factors, and the more I thought about this the better I liked it. For one, it creates a unifying principal between the disparate pieces, and it also makes it more immersive. If you are battling a small 4 ft. tall kobold, it should look like it's kind of unimpressive, but if you are battling a 45 ft tall frost giant, it should look like it's gargantuan. Also, having a unified scale factor for the figures and a separate scale factor for the terrain tiles, makes sense because it's pretty intuitive to switch between 2 scale factors, your avatar being slightly larger (or much larger) than the scale of the world, makes sense to me. I think that for the purposes of prototyping we should pick either 1/192 (1 inch = 16') or 1/144 (i inch = 12'). Both would work, but I would argue for the smaller figure scale factor (1/192), it makes it so more creatures/characters would fit on a single tile and it's pretty cool to have things minuature. A 6 foot tall knight would be 3/8" tall, pretty sweet. Here's a graphic that shows the different figurine scale factors: The tiles, from peak to peak are 1" wide, and distance from peg hole to peg hole is 1/8". I tried out 3 different terrain scale factors, 1/480 (1 inch = 40 feet, from peg to peg is 5 feet), 1/960 (1 inch = 80 feet, from peg to peg is 10 feet), and finally 1/1440 (1 inch = 120', from peg to peg is 15 feet). I also whipped up a quick little tavern model that I rendered in the same axonometric projection that I've been doing the other diagrams in, and you can see what they look like in the following graphic: The kind of cool thing about using a terrain scale of 1/1,440 and a figurine scale of 1/144 would be that the figures are proportional 10 times larger than the buildings/terrain. After looking at all of this I kind of think that I like 1/192 scale for the figurines and 1/1,440 for the terrain a small village could be a single terrain tile, and a large city could be designed that's a full 8x8 tiled board (and that would an area of 1,440 ft wide by 1080 tall). Here's a quick picture of the Tavern and 1/192 figurine, scaled up a bit: Let me know what you think!

  34. Hallandrian dyes provide better color fuel for awakening, specifically, which turns it into a technological and military resource. And whether they talk about it much or not, Hallandrian's economy is probably being propped up by their open trade of Breaths themselves as much as anything. By the sound of things not all nations are as accepting of the Soul Trade. The Idrians threat as a nation was their control of a major trade route to Hallandrian, which itself was as much as trade-based economy as a craft-based one. As a ruling family their threat was more in the Royal Locks giving them an undeniable and very strong claim to the historic unified throne. But their puritanical rejection of strong colors was said to be more of a reaction to their overly color-obsessed rivals. I dont think it would be able to take root enough to fully suppress the need for color pigments (be they textile, paints, etc) unless something happened to REALLY demonize awakening as a whole...Something like a phantom army of nightmare rising from the forgotten past to wipe out the most puritanical of nations and martyr them... But what are the odds? True, though silk did and does have a lot of superior mechanical properties which probably influenced it's demand, at least until we started developing comparable synthetics.

  35. Gf and no chocolate? Challenge accepted. Peanut Butter No-bakes Oats are gluten free but they might be contaminated with gluten because of the facility they are packaged in so make sure to get gluten-free oats. These suckers are delicious. I would suggest only using sugar-free peanut butter unless you have a truly strong sweettooth. I actually like these better than normal no-bakes.

  36. Honor being dead had an effect on Dalanars bondsmithness, does that bring him closer to an old-time Ahsynite bondsmith? Is that a reason he can push the stormfather around?

Supposedly it Connects you to the Spiritual Realm a little bit, and that's why Duralumin-boosting it a la Elend at the end of HoA gives you a total vision of future-sight, because you break through and actually "see" the SR in a way that you can comprehend because of the mental boost of Atium also being enhanced by Duralumin.
