  3. Hallandrian dyes provide better color fuel for awakening, specifically, which turns it into a technological and military resource. And whether they talk about it much or not, Hallandrian's economy is probably being propped up by their open trade of Breaths themselves as much as anything. By the sound of things not all nations are as accepting of the Soul Trade. The Idrians threat as a nation was their control of a major trade route to Hallandrian, which itself was as much as trade-based economy as a craft-based one. As a ruling family their threat was more in the Royal Locks giving them an undeniable and very strong claim to the historic unified throne. But their puritanical rejection of strong colors was said to be more of a reaction to their overly color-obsessed rivals. I dont think it would be able to take root enough to fully suppress the need for color pigments (be they textile, paints, etc) unless something happened to REALLY demonize awakening as a whole...Something like a phantom army of nightmare rising from the forgotten past to wipe out the most puritanical of nations and martyr them... But what are the odds? True, though silk did and does have a lot of superior mechanical properties which probably influenced it's demand, at least until we started developing comparable synthetics.

  4. The real answer is that the physics break down, much like the age-old question of Why dont bugs kill the (non-bulletproof) Flash. The current explanation is that the Weight manipulation is some sort of Higgs field manipulation, not literal mass. For me it helps to think of it as a skin-level field effect that changes how the Feruchemist interacts with their surrounding reality without actually modifying anything inside that field. The line between Internal Effects and External ones is pretty fundamental to a lot of cosmere effects.

  7. We know that something called an Excisor is required to make unsealed metalminds and we don't know how many there were originally or whether the southerners have been able to make more. Consequently it's hard to know how quickly new unsealed metalminds can be made since we don't know the specifics of the process or how many can be made at a time. Identity is actually involved in creating unkeyed metalminds (anyone who already has the right power can access its storage) rather than unsealed ones (grants the relevant power(s)) and it's not really hard at all since it's built right into feruchemy via F-Aluminum. As mentioned, we don't really know exactly how the latter are made aside from 'it needs an Excisor, nicrosil and at least one other metal'. Brandon has said that if he doesn't describe the process in The Lost Metal, we have permission to bug him about it until he explains it.

  8. I'm still reasonably new to the writing world when it comes to doing it myself using my own imagination. Sorry if this doesn't fit here its taken me a while to post something like this due to my anxiety but I want to be able to write so much. This is a small snippet of what I'm writing at the moment, I'm wondering if this is any good or if I'm just a shite writer like my anxiety makes me think. sorry if I misunderstood this part of the forum. The girl gets tossed over to the mother who whispers to the daughter “it's all going to be okay just stay quiet and let us adults talk this over”, the girl grasps her mother tightly ,afraid. The four people stand at the other side of the room muttering to each other out of earshot of the daughter and mother, the four turn around staring at the two. One of the women begins chuckling and says “ The girl is coming with us I'm afraid, since you have nothing worth the amount you owe us we will be taking your daughter as new inventory”. The mother, outraged, tries to escape her restraints but realizes she was tied down too well and just embraces her daughter for what might be the last time she can. One of the men yanks the daughter away from her mother with little difficulty, putting her over his shoulder as she kicks and screams, demanding to be put down. The group grab the sacks they came in with and leave together leaving the mother crying defeated in the corner still tied down to the chair. The group leave the house, closing the door behind them as if nothing happened. Although everyone nearby heard the commotion no-one came to help in any way, the inhabitants of Lumicon Rong watch as the group walk away with the young girl and possessions of the home they left. The young girl watches as no one helps or even speaks a word of displeasure to the abductors, she thinks to herself realizing “no one cares... do they?”. People hardly glance in their direction, no matter how loudly she shouts. They pass an assortment of buildings on their way to a location the young girl had never seen before, what looks like a small castle wall with a few tall buildings behind it in the corner of the mountain range Lumicon Rong resides in. Within the twenty or so minutes it took the party to get there, not one person spoke out or even crossed the path of the abductors. It was as if no one could see or hear them, or maybe they feared what might come out of any conflict created. As the group approaches the closed gate one of the women shouts loudly “oi swain, wake up”. The sound of a bottle being knocked over followed by a grunt comes from above the gate as an older gentleman's head appears. He acknowledges her with a nod and opens the gate, swiftly disappearing afterwards back behind the battlements of the wall. The young girl at this point has accepted what has happened to her and is awaiting whatever will come next, hoping for the best, expecting the worst.

  12. Surgebinding because A) magic (baseline abilities from inhaling Stormlight) B ) magic (Surge A) C) magic (Surge B ) D) comes with a friend! I'm not entirely sure about that last part, the spren could be not nice. Privacy would be a factor. Hmm... but the Nahel Bond isn't as bad as some other fantasy magic via bonds to magical creatures. I guess it might depend on my hypothetical potential Bondmate. Sandmastery is so limited. Do not want to be a Dakhor Monk or a Bloodsealer, way too morbid. ChayShan seems pretty limited too. Forgery is nice, but honestly, Surgebinding just has a wow factor to it! Awakening comes with the Heightenings, of course, and that's nice but I'll still prefer the Surges, giving up parts of my Breaths to animate something sounds like it'll feel terrible, don't like the idea of collecting Breaths at all either if that's a consideration in this hypothetical scenario. The Metallic Arts are cool too but again, I would prefer Surgebinding, maybe being Fullborn might tempt me. I'd pick AonDor when someone cracks using it off of Sel perhaps, but before then, it's definitely Surgebinding! 1st choice: Surgebinding (depending on how I get along with my spren) 2nd choice: AonDor 3rd choice: Feruchemy 4th choice: Allomancy 5th choice: use Hemalurgy to get all of the above four! Mwahahahahaha!

  16. Ok, guys, I am so sorry. I had an exam today so I just didn't check the Shard. And I dont think there really are "rounds" per se. I was wrong when I said that before. You just keep playing till people keep getting eliminated and only one winnet is left. Now I will accept only these new people right now, because I like all of them. And then no more new people. The final players are @Szeth's Facepalm @Hoiditthroughthegrapevine @Experience @Nameless @Malim @Mage @The Unknown Order and @The One Ring Now I am the first one, so Malim will send a word to Mage now intead of me and so on and so forth. And The One Ring will send a word to me. Whenever you can't think of a word just say ATLAS to the next person, and also say it here. That next person will choose a word and start it again and you will be out the game. We keep doing that till only one person is left who is the champion! Just wanted to make that clear though you all probably knew it anyway. Also, please no google-searching. And yeah. That's it. P.S. I will be more punctual from now.

  17. I find Feruchemy, being the most versatile, is the one that is most useful in daily life. Except for healing, which will make you suffer to store, the rest aren't all that bad. I am currently moving back and forth between a place that is too hot and too cold, so storing heat in one to use in the other will be a godsend, and being able to cool yourself in warm places is always useful to have. Controlling when I sleep by storing wakefulness will be really helpful for my storming sleep schedule. I feel you can always store strength throughout the day, just tad, to end up building up for a large store in the occasional moments you need to carry something too heavy or difficult for you to lift. Making yourself light whenever can be very useful (Just float down the stairs, practically zero gravity for the WIN) and I'm sure you can find a way to mess around with being heavier. Again, I don't think you always need to be as fast as you can go. Store some speed while walking, lying down, reading, basically whenever you don't need to move quickly, and have speed stored for when you're in a hurry. Speed of thought might be difficult to fit in your daily life, as you always need to think, but speed does take care of if that. The removal of senses is something many of us wish we could do at one point of another. Food burned in your house? Off sense of smell. Hurt yourself? Off any sense of feeling and block out the pain. Want to eat crappy tasting food for nutrition? Off sense of taste (I NEED this). Loud noise annoying you when reading? Off your sense of hearing. And all these senses you can increase at any time for any reason. (Not sure how to fit sight in daily life, in terms of storing without consequence.) Storing Memories. Need I go further? Storing breath wouldn't exactly be that hard. Just inhale really deeply, and boom. There are many times I wish I stored determination at a point I didn't need it so I could tap it later. Not sure how energy works. Store connection and become effectively multilingual. No cost. For someone who hates learning languages, yes, please. And rest of them are more cosmere magic related. (And the fact it's 4 - 1 is my point exactly!)

  20. Yes, that one was hard! I might not have found the time but my 2yr old is sick and just wants to cuddle, sleep and drink. So I basicly just sit in bed with her, having not much to do but reading. (Might be the reason for my first guess, but she's doing much better this morning ) Anyway, great one! It was nice to really get into these clues! Here's an easier one for everybody to join in and not only us nutjobs. 1. This character is married.

  25. Sort of odd since it is actually a positive for the heroes but "You cannot have my pain" really hit me hard. The realization that all of the mistakes of the past and the pain that comes with it being an integral part of who we are and that the bad can't/shouldn't be separated from the good without changing who we are. It was almost a triumphant sadness if that makes any sense.

  26. Welcome to the third annual official Cosmere Inktober, which begins October 1st. If you are unfamiliar with Inktober, it is a month-long drawing challenge that focuses on ink-based mediums, traditional and digital alike. Every day of October, people from around the world draw their interpretations of that day's prompt. This year we have a Cosmere-themed prompt list available a month early, to give those of you who would like to participate a chance to plan out your daily drawings. The official rules from the Inktober website are: Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want) Post it Hashtag it (we are using the hashtags #cosmereinktober, #cosmereinktober21, and #cosmereinktober2021) Repeat These rules are not set in stone, so if you want to use any art medium, go for it! If you don’t want to post your artwork, that is ok! You can do as few or as many of the prompts as your heart desires. The challenge is to be consistent and form good habits with your artwork. Make something beautiful! If you would like to browse some of last year’s Cosmere Inktober, here is a link to a collection on Instagram, though Tumblr and Twitter saw a decent number of submissions last year too.

  29. The gist for those who don’t want to read a massive post: Shallan is a Byronic hero. Female Byronic characters are rare and tend to be received more poorly than their male counterparts. Do you think this may have affected how some readers responded to her? Long version: I recently watched a great PBS video about Byronic heroes and it got me thinking about a certain Veden redhead. If any of you aren’t familiar, a Byronic hero is a character modeled after the characters of Lord Byron (and indeed Lord Byron himself). They are a contrast to traditional heroes in that they are more morally ambiguous. These are deeply flawed and self destructive characters who lie somewhere between hero and villain, but we are meant to root for them anyways. There was a section of the video in which they discussed the recent trend of occasionally seeing female Byronic characters. Traditionally, pretty much all Byronic characters have been male, and the vast majority still are. They noted that Byronic heroines often haven’t been well received. Which is interesting because male Byronic heroes have been hugely popular over the centuries. So, Shallan. I find the reactions Shallan draws to be fascinating. I know there are a lot of people who love, like, or are ambivalent towards her. But the large subgroup who hate her really, really hate her. Which is fine. It’s just interesting. I’ve seen calls for her to be killed, to have her head chopped off, to have a stroke. Commonly listed reasons being: Bad puns (Which, while bad, can’t possibly account for this reaction. Combined it’s like a paragraph's worth of puns in a 4,000+ page series). Some find her mental pathology off putting. But by far the most common is to give no reason at all. People just plain hate her. Can’t stand her. Annoying, loathsome, intolerable, cringe. Shallan happens to be the most Byronic character in the Stormlight Archive. (Most Byronic in the entire cosmere goes to Kelsier). Classic Byronic characteristics that I feel fit Shallan are: tortured by a dark secret from her past, morally questionable, self-destructive, traumatized, highly intelligent, sardonic, arrogant, manipulative, self-serving, enigmatic, reckless, self-indulgent, prone to substance abuse, an air of dominance while deep down she’s extremely vulnerable, an obsession with getting what she wants regardless of the cost to others, and a persistent inability to face her demons. This might be entirely unrelated to these strong reactions, but I can’t help but wonder if there is a connection. Shallan is a deeply flawed and messy character in ways that might have been more forgivable, or even appealing, if she were male. The more typical and expected male Byronic hero. Then again, it might have nothing to do with her gender. But I wish she were at least recognized and accepted for her Byronic nature instead of being treated like a traditional hero but a really crappy one. If you try to read Shallan like a traditional hero, she fails as a character. Shallan constantly makes bad choices and is very slow to learn from her mistakes. The narrative doesn’t necessarily punish her for bad behavior, and she doesn’t punish herself. Because she’s Byronic. I know people respond to characters for many different reasons, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  30. F Iron is described as giving users the strength to function. Weight is shown to be used to directly effect the world around the user. How does the strength to function not turn into strength to effect the world around you as well? If someone that weighs the same as a car were to fall to the ground and catch themselves then do a couple clapping push-ups wouldn't that same person be able to stand in front of a car moving towards them and catch it? Someone who weighs in excess of 2000 lbs can do a normal squat but they still only have the extra strength to left over to add the same few hundred lbs to the bar on top of that squat? How does the strength your muscles are able to produce increase proportionally for everything you do while it's effect outside of supporting yourself stays exactly the same but the world can crumble around you because your new weight is impacting everything you have done? I would suggest it is the same backwards. Someone who is storing weight shouldn't be able to lift nearly as much as they would have before hand. If you weigh 2000 lbs for a baseball throw how does that not effect the way that baseball travels or even feels in your hand? I know F Iron seems to break the most rules and has the most "because magic" feel to it but I am curious if there are some smart folks in the forums who can explain to me how someone who does 3 times their body weight in a squat normally can suddenly weight 10x their normal weight and suddenly their strength is only allowing them to squat 30% of their entire weight but they can squat to support themselves just fine.

  38. Spook tearing off his blindfold and seeing what he's done in HoA has always got to me a little bit, as much as anything else in any book has. The abrupt shift of perspective, the realization that he's been manipulated from a force for good into a force of Ruin and then accepting that he would probably have to die to undo what he'd done. It hits as hard as anything for me.

Let me tell you a story. =o=o=o=o=o The party, camera panning around the revellers. We see spren floating around, we see Jasnah looking disapproving and Dalinar dead drunk, but only briefly. We see a flash of White as the Assassin stalks down a corridor. Two guards notice him and charge. The Assassin bursts into light. Cut to Szeth by the dead body of the King, kneeling.
