  2. The idea for this post started as me just noticing and trying to catalog the various times when spren are described as appearing to ripple or flutter in an unseen/unfelt wind. I'd initially chalked this up to spren weirdness, but as I dug more into it, I started to cobble together a theory about something deeper going on here. Specifically, the TLDR is that I think when we see those unseen/unfelt winds, we are actually seeing waves or tides of power from the spiritual realm. And I think that Kaladin has shown how a human with honor in their heart can become attuned to that power and access it. More on the theory below, but first here's a rundown of the times when we see the rippling phenomenon, sorted by category. HONORSPREN Syl - Physical Realm The windspren stood in the air just beside his head, white dress rippling in a wind Kaladin couldn’t feel. (WoK 2) She walked with her hands clasped behind her back, her tiny, knee-length skirt fluttering in an intangible wind. (WoK 49) She slid down onto his shoulder, moving like a stiff breeze had blown her. She crossed her legs, sitting ladylike, skirt rippling as he walked. (WoR 41) She looked after Beard, her girlish dress rippling in wind that Kaladin couldn’t feel. (OB 73) Syl - Cognitive Realm Adolin jumped to his feet, scrambling back. He almost collided with a young woman with blue-white skin, pale as snow, wearing a filmy dress that rippled in the wind. (OB 87) Kaladin’s spren was different. She always seemed to be moving, slipping this way or that, girlish dress rippling as she walked, her hair swaying. (OB 93) She closed her eyes as she walked, chin up, as if basking in a wind he could not feel. (OB 95) Out through the room’s window, Kaladin could see Syl standing on the coast, watching out over the sea of beads. Her hair doesn’t ripple here, he thought. In the Physical Realm it often waved as if being brushed by an unseen breeze. Here, it acted like the hair of a human. (OB 97) Phendorana (Physical Realm) - Phendorana manifested as an older human woman, with mature features and non-nonsense Thaylen-style clothes, a skirt and a blouse. Her hair blew free as if in a phantom wind. (RoW 91) Yunfah (Physical Realm) - Yunfah stood on his cloud, his long beard whipping in the wind – though he had no real substance. (RoW 10) STORMFATHER - Cognitive Realm He searched the sky and discovered a ripple in the air, like heat rising from distant stone. A shimmer the size of a building. (OB 1) Dalinar backed up, letting Fen rejoin the people and experience the end of the vision. As he folded his arms to watch, he noted a shimmering in the air beside him. (OB 34) Dalinar turned to the side, to where he glimpsed the air shimmering. The Stormfather. (OB 38) OTHER SPREN - Physical Realm Anticipationspren Anticipationspren – like red streamers growing from the ground and whipping in the wind – clustered around them. (OB 3) Around the perimeter of the square, people hissed and whispered, anticipationspren flapping in an unseen wind. (OB 10) Translucent red streamers rose from the stone, whipping as if in the wind, one end connected to the ground. Anticipationspren. Lunamor gave them the sign of respect, hand to his shoulder, then his forehead. These were lesser gods, but still holy. He could see their true shapes beyond the streamers, a faint shadow of a larger creature at the bottom. (OB 37) The captain drew anticipationspren as he waited – ribbons that waved in the wind – and Kaza could see the beasts beyond, the creatures that accompanied the spren. (OB Interlude 4) Gloomspren - Kaladin looked up and noted an unusual spren whipping about. Long, grey, like a tattered streamer of cloth in the wind. It wound around him, fluttering. He’d seen it’s like only once or twice before. (OB 5) Creationspren - Around her, creationspren slowly vanished, most having taken the shapes of things about the camp. Swords that sheathed and unsheathed repeatedly, tiny tents that untied and blew in unseen wind. (WoR 78) OTHER SPREN - Cognitive Realm Oathgate Spren - Hovering in the air were two enormous spren – they looked like stretched-out versions of people, and stood some thirty feet tall, like sentinels. Once was pitch-black in coloring, the other red. He thought them statues at first, but their clothing rippled in the air, and they shifted, one turning eyes down to look at him. (OB 87) Notum's Steed - Notum’s grand white steed was almost a horse, though it was more graceful and supple, with long legs and a neck that bent in a way no physical spine could manage. It had large eyes but seemingly no mouth, and its hair waved in a phantom wind, like long glowing ribbons. (RoW 34) ODIUM'S FORCES Ulim - Physical Realm Ulim settled on a patch of broken branches, arms folded, his long hair rippling in an unseen wind. (OB INterlude 3) Indeed, it materialized into the shape of a small human – not a singer, but a human, with odd eyes and hair that waved in an unseen wind. (RoW 42) Aesudn/Yelig-nar (Physical Realm) - Aesudan stopped in the doorway to the king’s chambers. “I have outgrown you, Elhokar. I have taken the gemstone into me, and have harnessed Yelig-nar’s power.” Something started to twist around her, a black smoke, blown as if from an unseen wind. (OB 84) Sja-anat (Cognitive Realm) - She flowed up the steps in one realm, but barely moved in the other. Space was not entirely equal between the realms – it wasn’t that she had a foot in each realm; more, she was like two entities that shared a mind. In Shadesmar, she floated above the ocean of beads, her essence rippling. In the Physical Realm, she passed among singers who worked in the palace. (RoW Interlude 2) Odium (original flavor) - all realms at once presumably? Dalinar jumped, scrambling backward. The man was old, with a wide, furrowed face and bone-white hair that swept back from his head as if blown by wind. (OB 56) Odium held his hands to the sides, yellow-gold power streaming behind his figure like a wind made visible. (OB 115) OTHER Nale (Phyiscal Realm) - Darkness seemed to flow like smoke down the stairs, footsteps growing softer, uniform rippling in an unseen wind. (ED 19) Girl Who Looked Up (Lightweaving in Physical Realm, all from OB 25) A vibrant red scarf grew around the girl’s neck, twin tails extending far behind her and flapping in a phantom wind. “The girl traveled far,” Shallan said, looking back toward the stage. “No predators hunted her, and no storms assaulted her. The only wind was the pleasant one that played with her scarf, and the only creatures she saw were the cremlings that clicked at her as she walked.” Next to Shallan, the girl stood triumphantly on the wall’s top, her scarves and white hair streaming out behind her in a sudden wind. Unseen Tides/Currents Carefully, Kaladin entered the rows. The cloths billowed outward in the wind, but then fluttered down, reminiscent of the plants he’d often passed in the chasms. Living things that moved and flowed with the unseen tides of the blowing wind. (RoW 15) “There are currents to this world, Ishnah,” Shallan said. “They move unseen. They can tow you under suddenly, abruptly, when you thought you were swimming along perfectly safe.” (RoW 26) Honor's Perpendicularity (all three Realms, but in this scene viewed by Kaladin in the Cognitive during the climax of OB) - Sample of Particular Note - Shadesmar exploded with light. Fused screamed as a wind blasted them away, though Kaladin felt nothing. Beads clattered and roared. (OB 119) *** ON TO THEORIZING So that's pretty much all of them that I could find. You can see that in each of these examples, the thing doing the rippling/fluttering is something with a deep connection to the spiritual realm: spren, a Herald, the vessel of a Shard, a perpendiculity. But it's the very last instance - when Dalinar opens the perpendicularity - that really sparked the idea in my mind that what characters are seeing when they see this unseen/phantom wind is ripples of power from the spiritual realm. We know that in that scene, Dalinar has opened a direct conduit to the Spiritual Realm. And when he does so a powerful wind blasts away several Fused who are about to attack Kaladin in Shadesmar. But Kaladin doesn't feel the winds. Why? Well, I think it's because in that moment, struggling as he is with what happened in Kholinar and his inability to swear the fourth Ideal, Kaladin is not properly attuned to Honor's power. To explain what I mean, this is where I first have to back up and bring in one of my favorite quotes around which to theorize. This is from WoR chapter 82, part of the first conversation between Dalinar and the Stormfather. Dalinar asks who he's speaking to, and the SF responds: But what happens when the honor of men is all but dead? At the start of present-day events in the SA, Alethi culture in particular has more or less inverted the words of the first ideal. Lives are not valued but carelessly thrown away. Strength is treated as something that makes the powerful worthy to rule, rather than worthy to serve. And the destination is all that matters - the ends always seem to justify the means with all the scheming of the highprinces. As a result, they can't feel "the winds that men must feel." Enter Kaladin Stormblessed. This is where I have to bring in another quote. This is something Tanavast says in one of Dalinar's visions. After the tragedy of Tien's death, our boy Kal begins seeking out and protecting other youngsters like Tien. He starts acting with honor. And even before he's started to really bond with Syl and/or take in and use Stormlight, the winds begin to aid him. From WoK 1 Same battle, but from Kal's POV in WoK 47 Here's a description of the kata in the chasms in WoK 27: Here's the other members of Bridge Four watching and remarking on Kal fighting at the Battle of the Tower: There are plenty of other examples later where, above and beyond what Kaladin can do intentionally with Surgebinding, it seems that the winds themselves come to his aid and seem to grant him an almost atium-like ability to know what is going to happen. For example, during Adolin's duel in WoR: What's going on here? Well, if we're talking about someting infinite, beyond the touch of men, that starts to sound a whole lot like a refernce to the spiritual realm. Conversely, look at what happens to Kaladin's interaction with the winds when he's broken his oaths. Here he is as at the sparring grounds in WoR 81: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER So what's happening here? Well, I think that in these moments when Kal is moving with inhuman speed and reflexes, anticipating what's going to happen, and being aided by the wind, he's actually accesing the Spiritual Realm in small bursts. Consider a few more quotes and then I'm gonna try to tie it all together. First, here's one of the earliest mentions of the winds on Roshar, in WoK 4: Next, from WoR 5, Syl continues to behave like a windspren even after remembering what she is: Next, here's Syl talking to Kaladin in OB 6 about how the winds are of honor: Speaking of Honor, we all know, of course that "Honor is not dead so long as he lives in the hearts of men!" Thanks Captain Notum. And here's Hoid talking to Jasnah in the WoR Epilogue about where to look for salvation: Here's Teft with an intriguing line just after seeing Kal suck in Stormlight in WoK 38: Lastly, consider that when he's not being likened to a storm or the winds, Kaladin is also compared to a banner flapping in the wind, a symbol for others to follow: He clung there, like a pennant flapping in the wind... (WoK 35) He was a symbol. A living banner to destroy. (WoK 65) "Or maybe they simply need something to keep them going, surgeon. A symbol they can trust when they can't trust their own hearts." (RoW 74) We know that although Tanavast is dead, Honor's power remains. It's still there, just not really accessible most of the time. I take all the lines about unseen wind as evidence of spiritual winds emanating from the spiritual realm - "the winds that men must feel." And Kal starts to look like someone who, by acting honorably, attunes his heart to Honor's power (much like how a listener might attune a particular rhythm). In so doing, he more or less functions as a focus for pulling some of Honor's power through from the Spiritual Realm in the form of winds, much as the metals on Scadrial or the symbols on Sel become a conduit for power. And by doing so, Kal becomes a banner, flapping in those winds, a symbol to others that Honor's power remains and can still be accessed. Someone to show them the way and increase the number of hearts in which Honor still lives. One thing I like about this theory is that it can explain the "Child of Tanavast" thing without requiring Kal to be some special chosen one. Anyone could have been the one to start acting honorably and, in so doing, call on Honor's power. It just so happens that, because of his upbringing and experiences, he ends up being the one to do so first. Thanks for reading. As always, would love to hear what others think.

  3. I've commissioned an artist to paint me a female Lord Ruler, and here's the outcome! Considering that the artist hadn't read Mistborn, I think she did a great job presenting the spear scene according to my description

  5. Venli's co-conspirators in escaping the Fused are named Shumin, Mazish, and Dul, as far as I can tell from just a very quick check. This would be from RoW Chapter 11. Thude is the one who escaped (or was allowed to escape by Eshonai) with the other listeners who refused stormform. Raboniel gets a report of nomads in the hills, which Venli reads and understands as evidence of the survivors of her culture, led by Thude. She has a conversation with Rlain about it in RoW Chapter 96. Venli meets up with Thude against for the first time in a while in RoW Chapter 115, where she notes that he's never seen her wear this form before. I hope that helps track Thude a little better throughout the book!

  8. LG79/AN10 Night 5: 'Tis Only a Flesh Wound No one had ever really liked Chashen. They found him abrasive and annoying. So it was no surprised that after the death of another senseless mateform, they started coming after him. "You never liked Mateforms anyway, so it was probably you murdering them all along," accused Pavli. Chashen was offended by this statement. "It's not like just because I dislike mateforms that I want them all dead," he explained to the rhythm of annoyance. But they didnt listen, and they strung him up. But of course, he didn't die. His armor protected him from that. They injured him, but didn't actually kill him. Lame. This was why the traitors, if they were among them, would crush them. They had to be willing to entirely stomp them out. Once the group had lost interest in him again, he returned to his previous activity- carving a piece of wood. There was a child he wanted to give a toy to. The kids would be the ones to suffer the most from all this death and confusion. --- Abaram smiled quietly. They were very close. They would strike when they reached the Frostlands, was the current plan. End these pathetic rebel's dreams and bring some of them home as examples of what happened when you defied Odium. She hummed to the Rhythm of Exultation. Quietly, of course. She didn't need anyone realizing what she was doing. --- Heron (7): Mouse, Vulture, Scorpion, Beagle, Rhino, Dragonfly, Lion Vulture (2): Falcon, Heron Weasel (2): Flamingo Flamingo (1): Tuatara Mint Heron was exed, but survived! 9. Honestly I'd forgotten as well until someone semi-recently pointed out that it's suspiciously similar to how Nightblood "inverts" the normal Breath aura. I think it'll probably have some use (for example, I think Brandon's mostly been RAFOing the Allomantic and Feruchemical properties of godmetal alloys because they're relevant to Era 3), but I do agree that the direct military use of atium will be a lot less important than in, say, TFE times. Disagree, in some cases they're more thematic than direct, but they're very relevant (WoR less so, because it was shoehorned in after the publisher no-no'd his original name for it, but in that case there's the pretty obvious connection of the Radiants). Alloy of Law: what the purpose of law actually is is a re-occurring theme throughout the books, and Miles exists as someone who challenges Wax's view of it. Shadows of Self: Paalm could probably be described as a shadow of her former self, and I'd argue it applies to Sazed as Harmony as well. Warbreaker: Both a character and a description of the plot of the book, stopping the war Vivenna had been helping start. Honestly, I know Brandon's said Renarin blocking Odium is like atium interfering with atium, but that explanation makes no sense to me. I'm not gonna dig into it much, because I've had several multi-hour arguments on the Discord lol, but I feel it really just does not match it at all. Atium interference: Only when both are burning A two-way street by necessity Only "blocks" that person, but doesn't even block fully, just gives too many possibilities for a mortal mind Renarin's interference: Active all the time One-way street (he sees Odium just fine, repeatedly) Blocks him and everyone and everything in his vicinity completely Honorblades are less efficient. This doesn't necessarily mean weaker, though that's what it translates to in most everyday usage. But what's relevant here isn't necessarily efficiency, it's Connection to Honor and/or raw power/Investiture/something, which Honorblades could plausibly beat out most spren on.

  10. Yes, this is indesputable. Why? It's suppression of Honor's Light. I'll grant that this should be true for the suppressor under normal circumstances, when suppressing Voidlight and when it is used with Odiums Truest Whatever. But I don't think any Connection to Odium would let you bypass the suppression of Honor's power, any more than a strong Connection to Honor would let you use Voidlight under the suppressor working normally. Yeah, that's fair. I could see it going either way, really. I mean era 2 =/= era 4 and we have no idea if Harmony is making more of it. And I mean, Shadows of Self, Alloy of Law, Warbreaker and Words of Radiance are all titles with very little relevance to what happens in them, so I don't think that's super solid. Also, in era 4 there should be barely any use for atium, barring hemalurgy. It's honestly odd that just having it won't protect you, though I know that to be the case. Or it's odd that Renarin is protected all the time, as he's presumably not surrounded by halucinations of stained glass 24/7 (or 20/5 as the case may be.) Didn't say they did. I meant it as each of them could potentially make a Bondsmith if bonded. Let me pull up my new favourite WoB: Bolding mine. I've believed for a long time that (generally) if it goes in a fabrial it goes in a gemheart it goes in a bond, with certain spren obviously being too large to go in most gemhearts. My belief is that as long as it has a valid output in one of these systems, it has a theoretical valid output in all of them, Radiant bond, fabrial, singer form. Though good luck swearing anything to the charge in a spike. If this is true, and I have very little reason to doubt it, I don't find the idea of the Unmade, either in part or in whole, being valid Bondsmith spren, or at least as valid as Renarin being a Truthwatcher. Mishram? I believe that the ancient Radiants made a bit of a deal of how she was supplying Voidlight. It would also irk me something fierce if there aren't eventually spren for each Light, personally guessing Mishram for Void, Sja-anat for "Thorn," maybe Yelig-nar for War, don't know for the tripartite Light, possibly a spren that doesn't yet exist. Because his seizures didn't make spheres go dun before? ¤_¤

  11. I think this is a good observation, but I am very skeptical for a lot of reasons. One of them being that Moash has fallen so deep in Rhythm of War, it's literally impossible to redeem him over a few days (which will apparently be book five's story's duration). Another one being his aforementioned refusal to deal with it. He explicitly states that he is not sorry for killing Teft, he just isn't, even outside Odium's influence. That's not a foundation for a redemption arc, in any way. But other reasons (that I haven't seen cited as often) why I think a thorough, complete redemption arc is basically impossible to pull off tastefully are this: 1) Elhokar was in the middle of a sort of a redemption arc himself, from egoistic and incompetent king to someone who actually tried to do better. And then the possiblity of him completing that arc was destroyed as Moash murdered him. If Moash got the very thing that he violently took from Elhokar, that would feel very cynical, very inappropriate, and ill-advised, I guess. 2) This regards Moash's other murder of a main character, and it's a quote from Chapter 104, Teft's very last words: "You can kill me, but you can't have what I have. You can never have it. Because I die knowing I'm loved." (Italics are transcribed from the book) And it would be strange if Moash got that very thing, when Teft's big moment, his big last stand to Moash consisted of telling him that he wouldn't have it. I think it's hard to pull off a Moash redemption arc without making these two (very emotional) moments feel awkward and wrong. It might be possible in some way, but hell, I believe that's more work than a single pre-time skip Stormlight book can offer a non-major character.

  13. I love this! It's such an elegant interpretation, one that illuminates a lot of the more miraculous things Kaladin does. I'd like to add something that I've seen that I feel supports this theory, specifically that there is a strong element of choice/agreement in surges that are more closely aligned with Honor. The best I can phrase this is that Honor is often called a god of laws, and that those laws are subject to agreement by the governed. So I think there is precedent for this idea that Honor's laws (and Honor's powers?) can be guided by widespread agreement. It totally makes sense to me that the more people there are who agree that Kaladin is this hero, this symbol, the more empowered he is by the slivers of Honor that "still live in the hearts of men" and the better a conduit he is. And when he accesses the Spiritual Realm, he's tapping into his ideal self, isn't he? It certainly seems to square the idea that Kaladin is at his most powerful when he's protecting someone, and also being "extra-aligned" to Honor's Intent to a somewhat unhealthy degree. I, too, really like the idea of Kaladin being a subversion of the chosen one trope by being the first to choose to behave this way. (Novelty really is the thing people value the most!) I find it also adds some extra dimension to RoW 80, where Kaladin perceives the wind as hating him ... what is that in this context, Kaladin feeling the winds of Odium's storm as opposed to Honor's?

  15. In this specific rp and select others, bold your rp entries, but in other ones, you would use normal text like this. Also, for future note, when you are in one of those rps where the normal text is the rp responses, put your meta talk or normal talk like this in a quote box. But, hello there! Welcome to the chaos Shard! I haven't been here since the beginning of this rp, I kinda jumped in at page 10 without context, then seriously rped here since page 18 saying that aloud makes me realize how long I've rped here :v Basically, take what I say with a grain of salt, but I'll do my best at recaping. Either Fadran, Condensation, or Xino will come in and correct me. Maybe that cleared some things up, no promises.

  16. Do note, Brandon not doing side projects will not actually get Stormlight done any quicker. He has said on many occasions that he uses those other books to recharge and rejuvenate himself so he's ready to write a killer cosmere book. This has always been how he has worked. If he didn't write Skyward or noncosmere, honestly, I don't think you'd get a cosmere book any faster. Brandon says that the giant books are exhausting. By doing this, he makes sure people get something in between the breaks in Stormlight releases. Brandon is very conscious of time and has recently spoken in great detail that he wants to make sure he finishes the cosmere, so he has to get Stormlights done every three years. But ultimately I'd probably prefer Brandon to be excited to get to the big cosmere books and not burn out and hate writing them. That's what the noncosmere ones allow him to do. He's fairly consistently put out Stormlights every three years. It is a fact with this author that he will work on side projects in between the big ones, and still get the big books out more frequently than some other fantasy authors That said, Lost Metal has taken a while, for sure.

So this is my theory in the dragon steel chapters brandon has made available, yolen is most of the time referred to as “the continent of yolen” now we go on to mistborn secret history , ati, before he dies utters the word vax, now presumably, the last place ati was before taking up the shard of ruin was yolen, or should I say vax (I will explain this later) in warbreaker, hoid refers to his homeland as a “place we’re to lands meet and gods have died” furthermore, there is a saying on yolen that goes “may two worlds become one to you” and Brandon has SPECIFICALLY stated that this is NOT in reference to any realms so my theory is that vax isn’t a planet, but another landmass or continent on yolen

  18. So, I know that not every minor character has to be someone mysterious. But I was looking through WoK recently and one small detail about Roshone’s steward, Natir jumped out at me: For anyone who’s read MB Era 2, you can probably tell which word jumps out at me here. It’s the cravat, which is a fairly common fashion accessory in Era 2 Scadrial. But this is the only time we ever hear of someone wearing one on Roshar. And we actually hear quite a lot about Rosharan fashion in the SA books, so it just seems weird. On the other hand, the scene is from Kal’s POV, and he presumably knows the word. So maybe it’s nothing. The only other things we learn about Natir are that he’s got slender hands and is married to a stern-looking woman named Alaxia. Not a super Alethi-sounding name that. We don’t ever see either of them again after WoK, so who knows if they’re still kicking around. Anyway, probably scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but just throwing it out there since we’ve got a tall steward wearing an article of clothing we’ve only ever seen on Scadrial.

  19. Like the title says. Despite what you may think about the coolness of each magic system, Ferring names are way cooler than Misting names. I mean Skimmer, Sentry, Bloodmaker, Trueself. I could name a dozen more Compare that to Allomancy. Coin shot, Lurcher, Soother, Rioter? Those are objectively more lame. Change my mind. (I could make this a meme)

  23. 1. Nope. Though if we have too much more errand-running before they actually make their attempt to leave, I'll probably end up getting a little restless before too long (says the person who leaves one of her MCs bedridden for several thousand words...oops) 2. I like C and T here a good deal. V...well...meh. 3. Unfortunately, V's actions here don't really land for me. I do think some of that is probably WRS. It's been a while since the early chapters when he was more clearly trying to be a helpful friend to C. For his actions here to come across as 1. something he's actually conflicted about and 2. something that hurts C as deeply as it seems like its supposed to. After all, she abandoned S to be lost with the town. And while S seems like a pretty horrible person, C has recognized her as her mother up until a few days before. Why should V's decision to stay be that much more significant other than the fact that now they have to figure out what to do with A. I think to make his crisis of character in the recent chapters work, we need clearer evidence of the before, during, and after of that change. More loyalty/friendship/helpfulness at the start. Some point of change that makes him realize that it's all for naught. This was vaguely mentioned, in that while he was flying around, he tried to leave. But we didn't really get any indication of the why of it except that he said he was feeling like he didn't belong. I think if that needs to hit like it's supposed to, we need to get some indication that despite his loyalty to and friendship with C, he's still feeling left out or like the task is too big for him, from the beginning. Otherwise, it feels really out of the blue. And even if we're more sympathetic with his wanting to give up on the job, I think we need more reason for him to be willing to actively abandon everyone else to their fates when he knows what they're facing. Feeling inadequate to save them on his own is one thing, and would argue for the attempt to flee the town. But taking that helplessness and then taking the one ticket to guaranteed safety just seems like a really horrible thing for him to do if we are supposed to think of him in any sort of positive light... I don't know if that's helpful. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like any additional thoughts on that front. Pg 1: I want a car autopilot screen… Pg 3: This is sort of a jerk move from V. Was he just waiting for C to get there to rub it in her face when they’re trying to look for help? What if she and T hadn’t decided to put A in the AH (AHHHH! Sorry. Can’t help it.)? “the only one who I can really trust.” Is he, though? I think T and E have been more trustworthy in recent chapters. Even if they’re also trying to work through their own problems. V’s sort of been out doing his own thing for a while now. “supposed to help me” Again, is he, though? Why’s that supposed to fall on him? And what help is he supposed to be providing? Pg 4: “There’s nothing I’m supposed to do.” I’m with V on this one. Even if he seems to be about to throw C and company under a bus. “I’m just a green raven boy who tumbled into a vegetable patch.” Which is all that different from C tumbling into existence after S (I assume) fed things into the wood stove, how? “I hope you win” but I’m going to do the one thing within my power at the moment to make all your lives more difficult. I am having a lot of issues with V here… I feel like it’s supposed to come across as a betrayal of sorts, which works to some extent, but I don’t know that I had enough of a sense of him actually trying to help C for this to come across as him being conflicted about betraying a friend. Mostly it just seems like he has been taking advantage of C’s kindness and friendship and is now grabbing the last seat in the lifeboat himself… It’s possible that there’s some WRS involved. I know it’s been….months? (in reading time) since V first appeared, and that he’s been absent for the past number of chapters. So I’m sure there is probably more friendship and loyalty shown in the early chapters than I’m remembering from recent reading…but I’m not feeling it enough to be all that offended by his betrayal here except to have a general “Wow. What a selfish jerk.” feeling about it Pg 5: I like C’s fighting to get the door back open. It’s good to see her determination and desperation kicking in. “How can she hope…can’t even save V?” I mean. Both E and G-M have a much longer history with her and seem to have far more motivation to not just give it all up and lock themselves in a magic house…V doesn’t really have any attachments to the town (as he’s said), but E and GM both have reasons to fight for it and reasons to want it to be saved. So I’d think V would be the far more difficult one to save anyway. Pg 6: “If T can do that, C can keep trying.” I like this line. I’m glad to see T’s looking after her grandfather recognized for exactly the reason C acknowledges here—that it’s something that is likely to go unacknowledged otherwise. “going to have to take A with us.” Hooray! Road trip! Pg 7: I also want a magic fan that rearranges available information into a usable format. Man, I really like the magical items. Pg 8: I don’t remember if we knew much about G before. If it wasn’t mentioned that he was a mechanic (but now isn’t), that would be a good tidbit to include to keep that continuity of who has sacrificed what, so that it feels more like a natural reveal instead of an “of course someone has a magical toolbox when it’s exactly what we need…” deus ex machina issue. You may have done this and I’m forgetting. As a thought that you can feel free to discard: you could even bring it up when they’re looking at the vehicles for one that works so that it’s fresher in our minds. Having one of the kids mention that they could see if MG learned anything from her dad about cars or if they might be able to get G to fix something without making him suspicious and have it shut down because he doesn’t do that anymore (and now all of the things he tries to fix go horribly wrong?) As mentioned, I love the odd magical items, but do think that they are at risk of becoming a …well… magical solution to any problem we might find ourselves running into. Good setup ahead of time will help with that a lot, though. Are they stealing it? Or are they just using it quickly and returning it? There’s a pretty big difference between those options.

  24. But, judging from Venli's example, not the ability to use Stormlight. Before the tower is restored the only people who can use Stormlight are people with the Windrunner powerset, one way or another, so Rlain's vision, in that moment, can not have been powered by Stormlight, at least from my understanding. Yeah, we only know that a mistborn serial killer is planned to appear, and it might well be everyone's favourite stab-happy ghost. I can still see why you'd want to avoid re-stating hours of arguments here. Heh, my recent post history will show that this is 100% not true for me as well. Yeah, I mostly wanted to make the point that atium is not guaranteed to actually be central to the plot of Lost Metal and that we can't conclude that atium and lerasium will be seen again in a significant way just because of the title of an upcoming book. ¤_¤

If there was just one metal from one system I would probably have to take Allomantic pewter though. The image of Vin and that devastating headbutt just plays over and over. As for the RPG. I would so be down depending on other folks availability.

  33. Agreed. Moash's thoughts that chapter were basically "I'm not sorry, I just hurt immensely at realizing what I've done and hate myself for it and feel incredibly guilty and ashamed and horrified by my actions". He's refusing to accept that at the moment and fled back to Odium, but it's very much there if he chooses to own up to it in the future.

  35. So I haven’t done a reread of RoW yet and I need some help figuring out exactly what we found out about Odium’s plans for the Cosmere war he mentions. Am I remembering correctly that Odium views Roshar as a training ground for the troops he will use in his war in the Cosmere? The Alethi mythology of the afterlife holds that those who are worthy are chosen to fight alongside the Heralds to reclaim the Tranquiline Halls, right? Does that mean that the battle to reclaim the Tranquiline Halls is actually this Cosmere war? And does this mythology therefore stem from Odium’s influence? Are those who are worthy being selected by Odium to remain as soldiers in this war? Or is this a future plan of Odium’s (not yet in motion)? If this is what is happening, and is already in motion, does this mean that Odium has been stopping those he considers worthy from passing into the beyond when they die? If so, where are all these souls? Would this have anything to do with the screams people like Szeth and Dalinar hear? If anyone remembers more clearly, I’d love to know what info there is about the Cosmere war Odium speaks of in RoW, and if this is connected in the book to the mythology of the Tranquiline Halls.

  37. Also, this is real. Thank you for putting this into words, Kyn, because you're absolutely right for many types of depression (my own included). It's painful, watching yourself doing things from a distance. And you're right, Kaladin exemplifies this perfectly.

  38. I feel for everyone in this thread, both those with love for Kaladin and frustration. But personally, I do love Kal's storyline. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD (although not from anything nearly as extreme as most people). Kaladin saved me. When Oathbringer came out, I had just experienced the things that gave me most of my PTSD. I was feeling broken, as Teft put it. Reading the end of OB, where Kaladin was unable to swear the fourth ideal but was never belittled for it, really gave me so much hope. It helped me realize for the first time that I didn't have to be perfect, and that it was okay to ask for help. When RoW was released, I'd been put on anxiety/depression medication and had consistent therapy sessions, so I was doing a lot better (still am). But his chapters were still so visceral and made me think of myself. Even though I understand why some people think the constant depression chapters were a slog and too much to get through, for me, it was constant validation that it was okay to feel like that for an extended period of time. It helped me realize that sometimes, things don't get better immediately. As long as you keep trying, keep pushing, there is always hope. That's what Kaladin taught me. And of course, the Dog and the Dragon and the Tien chapters made me sob (I still sob through each reread haha). For me, Kaladin really is an inspiration, and is definitely my comfort character, if that makes sense.

So why do these Shards still have Futuresight although Renarin blocks Odium's? What is going on there? Do we misunderstand this? Is Odium blinded by Renarin because Renarin is connected to Honor/Cultivation? Or does Harmony have a blind spot in his Futuresight for every electrum Misting? And Odium simply just cares about Renarin due to his position and ignores all those Regals causing gaps?

Lirin and Hesina get it because of Kaladin and because he's a doctor & they'll use it as a clinic. Laral, meanwhile, gets the same deal simply because she's a Lighteyes. So the distinction explicitly still exists in RoW.
