  3. It's that time of year.... I can still hardly believe it's been an entire storming year since I joined the shard There are so many people I need to thank and I can't believe I have had the honor of knowing over the past year, it amazes me, however my parents are making me go to bed now, so I won't be able to tell y'all just how amazing you are until tomorrow, but in short, just know that my experience here has been amazing with every single person I've met. You are all fabulous and lovely, truly, thank you.

  5. I agree with this. I've been on the elim team a lot recently, and often the village has had a hard time figuring things out, so I advocate for total avoidance of bussing in the hopes of denying the village any footholds. This mechanic is intended to force the issue in the other direction, one way or another. On an unrelated note, I'm on the search for 2 new mechanics. One is a way for villagers and/or eliminators to be able to kill inactive players without hindering themselves. Sort of like a player enforced activity filter that would replace what we currently use. Something simple would be a kill role that can only target a player that hasn't voted. But more nuance would likely be better here. Maybe once per game a player could ask to be granted immunity against this kill during the current or next cycle. The second is a way to reward villagers (mechanically or otherwise) for finding elims through analysis. The game already does this by default, but I think we as a community can step up our game here, and a good mechanic might help with that. A rough idea would be that during each night turn, players have to submit a guess at the elim team (whose size would be revealed at the game start). Then over the course of the game, the players who have the most accurate guesses get something at the end. So something similar to what I proposed for the locations in my LG ruleset.

I will call it donut 2: electric boogaloo." Noam: "Idk I think of making out as just romantic cuddling with face contact" Fadran: "the watermelon people stole my darned paddleboard!" Fadran: "She gets paid in children" Vennie: "love is like putting green beans in the microwave, and a then a stick of butter in the green beans" Me: "Please don't sacrifice your children to Ms. Frizzle." 8. So I was talking to my friend a while ago, and he was trying to guess what biochromatic breath was actually called from a description I gave deliberately horribly: 'you use breath to make things move' He gave me a bunch of random names like oxyglurgy, aerokinesis, etc etc Got me thinking. What are some other names everyone is else can come up with for cosmere magic systems? They cannot be correct, they have to be horribly put together. Be funny!

  9. Adhesion is Honor’s Surge. Progression is Cultivation’s Surge. Odium does not have a Surge. No other shard has a Surge. Here is the circle of the surges, with the surges of Honor and Cultivation bolded: Adhesion Tension Gravitation Cohesion Division Transportation Abrasion Transformation Progression Illumination However, if you force Adhesion and Progression to be on opposite sides of the circle, you end up with this: Adhesion Tension Gravitation Cohesion Transportation Division Transformation Abrasion Illumination Progression If you then imagine Cultivation on the bottom and honor at the top, you can see a clear gradient from surges more of honor to surges more of Cultivation. Transportation and Division are the only ones at the same point in that gradient, because they’re in the middle. This also gives a clear gradient (This time with no ties) of Radiant orders. Bondsmiths, Windrunners, Stonewards, Skybreakers, Willshapers, Elsecallers, etc. All the way down to Truthwatchers. Note that the order second closest to Honor bonds Honorspren, and the order second closest to Cultivation bonds Cultivationspren. Of all surges, why are Cohesion and Division the first pair that Brandon mentions? If the circle of surges was not originally a circle in Brandon’s mind, but a line from Adhesion to Progression, Division and Cohesion end up right next to each other. Windrunners get a burst of power whenever they swear an oath. Brandon has said that it’s because of their proximity to Bondsmiths. I always assumed that meant that Stonewards also got the power, but now they might not necessarily; Windrunners are closer to Honor than Stonewards.

  10. As you may or may not be aware, Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for lost revenue. Basically from what I understand, her contract said she got a cut of theatrical revenue for Black Widow (which I haven't seen yet, FYI), and the decision to release it on Disney+ cut into the cinema takings, not to mention their taking from this supposedly comes to US$60m. Obviously, it seems a little callous for a millionaire to be complaining about not making money due to something that is based on public health advice. But Disney do have a history of not respecting payment obligations; they apparently decided that they 'inherited the rights but not the obligations' of the contracts Lucasfilm had made with Star Wars Legends authors, so they didn't pay royalties to those authors. While I understand the reservations, if they don't have to pay one of the most bankable film stars of the current era, what reason do they have to pay the far less financially stable writers or other creators they work with, who have far less power to contest this? I feel like they could at least compromise by donating a certain amount to some sort of charity for creatives who have lost income due to Covid. Both parties have bad press from this lawsuit, and this could mitigate multiple issues going ahead.

  11. Hi! I don't really know how forum mafia works, but I'd love to find out. I really like playing werewolf with friends, so maybe I'll like this! So you need a character? Uh... I guess I'll go with Jack Oliver Travis, which is definitely not a reference to the word jot, Jack of all Trades, or golf. I do have some questions though. Does the Honest role apply to the semantics of a lie or the spirit of a lie? For example, if I was a wolf and I said "I am a villager" because I live in a village IRL, would that be a lie for the purposes of the role? Or if I said "I'm village" because village is a valid nickname for me Stuff like that. Or "I trust xyz" because as a wolf, I know xyz is also a wolf. Or "I would suspect zyx" using "would" to imply that I don't because as a wolf, I know zyx is not a wolf. Are the cards that work on other people of your choice or random/narrator decided? I think it would be of your choice, but the rules just say "another player" or "a different person" Does the word "can" in some card descriptions mean success is random or the player has the ability to use it without choosing to have the effect?

  22. LG79/AN10 Day 5: Death by the Seashore The ocean. Thane had never seen it before. They had gone south quite a bit in their route, trying to avoid any human settlements. They didn't need the Knights Radiant coming after them. In so doing, they had made their way to the sea. The waves crashed on the sandy beach, and the kids had already taken off to go and play in the water. A femalen went after them to make sure they didn't drown. The camp settled down to wait for the night. Part of the reason for this spot was the caves by the beach, where they would be able to wait out the next highstorm. From here, they would soon enter into the Frostlands of Natanatan. There, they would be able to find safety. But that was still a while away, and there will still deceivers among them. Not that they had been able to identify any of them. Thane decided he wanted to go feel the sand. The sand was warm and soft. The sound of the ocean was soothing, with the kids shrieking in joy in the background as they splashed each other. The mateforms, were, of course, frolicking with each other on the sand. Not that that was anything new. And so Thane took a nap. --- He awoke to the sound of screaming. A mateform was standing over her mate. "Another one," thought Thane groggily. "Did you see who killed him?" he asked the panicked femalen. "No," she sobbed, "we were both asleep on the sand. She sang loudly to the Rhythm of Despair. Thane didn't know how to help her. But it was too late for her mate, so he tried hugging her to help. She cried in his arms. --- She eventually fell asleep, and Thane and some others took care of the body. When he came back, however, he found a strange pattern drawn in the sand. Once again, it was a confusing one. What could it possibly mean? --- Charcoal Hyena has been killed! They were a Mateform Rebel! Village Stash Player List The turn will end in about 50 hours, at 12:00 EDT 8/2/21.

  30. I feel for everyone in this thread, both those with love for Kaladin and frustration. But personally, I do love Kal's storyline. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD (although not from anything nearly as extreme as most people). Kaladin saved me. When Oathbringer came out, I had just experienced the things that gave me most of my PTSD. I was feeling broken, as Teft put it. Reading the end of OB, where Kaladin was unable to swear the fourth ideal but was never belittled for it, really gave me so much hope. It helped me realize for the first time that I didn't have to be perfect, and that it was okay to ask for help. When RoW was released, I'd been put on anxiety/depression medication and had consistent therapy sessions, so I was doing a lot better (still am). But his chapters were still so visceral and made me think of myself. Even though I understand why some people think the constant depression chapters were a slog and too much to get through, for me, it was constant validation that it was okay to feel like that for an extended period of time. It helped me realize that sometimes, things don't get better immediately. As long as you keep trying, keep pushing, there is always hope. That's what Kaladin taught me. And of course, the Dog and the Dragon and the Tien chapters made me sob (I still sob through each reread haha). For me, Kaladin really is an inspiration, and is definitely my comfort character, if that makes sense.

  32. If this happens, I believe they'll need to replace most of the Heralds, not only Jezrien. Let's be real, alive or not, they're not up to this job anymore. It ties to the WoB that the back 5 is supposed to be focused on the Heralds instead of Radiants. I can't imagine we'll swap the whole cast, especially with Renarin, Jasnah, and Lift as flashback characters. Also, I think it'd be only a temporary measure to survive the years between the series halves. So nobody will consider this an ideal solution, but it'll be the only patch they'll have at hand after some massive defeat in book 5. And then in the back five, they'll come up with something more permanent.

  33. I'm almost done with my, uh, *cough* seventh *cough* reread of Oathbringer, and I really don't know why Brandon says his prose isn't very good. It's wonderful. I storming love it. It's gorgeous, especially in scenes with heightened emotions of any kind. Even in Mistborn and stuff, it's great prose. Maybe it's not super intricate or anything, but that lets the focus be on the characters and the story and stuff instead of on the writing itself. Anyways, that's my random thought for tonight. Also. I want more of Jasnah and Renarin's relationship please that'd be awesome, thanks. Hopefully, if we don't get that in the next book, we'll get it in the second arc. Ahhhh only six more Stormlight books! Only one left of the first arc! Mmmm I love the Cosmere.

  34. That makes a lot of sense. I had similar thoughts, but couldn't flesh them out as much. It's been awhile since I read the original trilogy. I actually trimmed that post down a lot, because there are so many questions that Lifeforce and Deathrise give rise to. It feels like there's an explanation in there somewhere, and when it's revealed it will make a lot more sense. That was just the biggest piece of my question. Another big piece is that usually, when an epic gifts their powers, it helps to diminish their own darkness, which also doesn't seem to be the case for Lifeforce. Which could be because he lets himself get injured so frequently, or just be the way he let his own psyche change, or be from Deathrise. So many questions and possibilities...it makes me happy, and also confused. I also wondered if Deathrise came about from so many epic powers, and so much of the darkness, mingling together. Like, maybe they played off of each other and exacerbated the darkness into something stronger than the original, that couldn't be removed just by the departure of Calamity.

  38. Hey folks! Just wanted to brag a bit here and show you what can happen with a dedicated writing critique group: @kais, @Robinski, @shatteredsmooth, @Silk, and I have been working on an anthology since the middle of last year and today is the cover release! The book will be going through my imprint, so I guess I'm officially a publisher now... This book is a labor of love by the five of us, and would never have been possible if we didn't have this group to put us all together and make all our drafts bleed. So without further ado, here is Distant Gardens, an anthology of lesbian-centric, inclusive stories about spaceships, fairies, fungus, tentacles, and strange plants! Available here for preorder. Official release is August 3rd: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097F5FHKK Thanks to everyone on here, past and present. It wouldn't have been possible without you!

  40. Brandon's new reading had some amazing easter-eggs. Most notably, a violet-glowing radiant in full plate summoning a shard-rifle. He had a roughly bird-shaped glyph on his armor and asked about local laws. So I'm assuming a far-future Skybreaker. Also very interesting was a ship taking off from a steel landing platform with no sound. It seems that both Scadrial and Roshar, or some factions with their powers are vying for control of the Aviar.
