  1. MR51: Come On Down To Irontown (aka Assassin's Creed: Elendel but Avalon.) Scadrial is transforming. Railways are being built to connect the civilised octants of Elendel with the far-flung cities and towns in the Roughs. In Elendel itself, factories are springing up all over, employing unprecedented numbers of workers. Harmony willing, Elendel will see a new era of prosperity and technological advancement. But all of this comes at a cost. Hundreds of workers find themselves increasingly crammed into small dormitories meant to take less than half their numbers. Soot and smoke from the factories linger most heavily in the industrial district, Irontown, like the legends of ash in the old days before the Final Ascension. Hours are long and the work is hard and the employers brutal. The nobles and factory owners glut themselves on boxings, and you count every last clip in the hopes of making it somewhere. Maybe it was the time Starrick’s thugs broke the legs of the last workers to demand better pay. Or maybe it was the time molten iron splashed on Tomas’s face. You still see him begging on the street on the way to your shift. They threw him out like slag. In recent days, a small group of factory workers meeting at the local establishment, The Bent Boxing, finally decide to take matters into their own hands. Come on down to Irontown, Comrade, where desperate dreams choke beneath an iron-grey sky and ash and soot are thick like the tar. Where the blood flows in the gutters and lines the pockets of the wealthy. Where the bones of the poor are buried beneath the towers that thrust into the sky, belching smog into the air and leeching poison into the waters. Come on down to Irontown, and light the flames of revolution. Oppression has to end. General Rules: Win Conditions: Roles: General Housekeeping: Quick Links: Sign-ups are open now and will close on Friday, 25th June 2021, at 2300hrs SGT (GMT +8). Rollovers will take place at the same time.

  3. So, feel free to debunk me by any means necessary, but I'm relistening to RoW, and a thought occurred to me as to what's happening to adolin and maya. We know that a nahel bond grants special abilities to radiants. What if it can work the other way as well... Is it possible that adolin is becoming, for lack of a better term, Mayas... "spren?" What if adolin isn't destined to become a radiant, because Maya is destined to become... Something new?

  4. Hi all, just a reminder RoW stuff should only be in the RoW boards during the spoiler period. In addition, maybe you'd like me to move this topic to a forum that allows discussion of spoilers? We like to keep Introductions spoiler-free. Let me know if you'd like that and I'll do that!

  5. Most likely it's because their sprens are bigger. If you gave investiture to a gloryspren until it became sapient you'd most likely get a Radiant with physical Adhesion and physical Tension and not both the spiritual and physical version as Boundsmiths do. The "speak for honour" part is unique to the Stormfather and comes from the fact that he's a Sliver of Honour (and even bigger than the Sibling or the Unmades)

  6. Aluminium doesn't exactly nullify magic (except Allomantically), it's inert, it blocks them. So an aluminum sheath could stop Nightblood's effects and a thick enough piece of aluminium could block a Shardblade. Covering something magical in aluminium is a good way to contain them but it doesn't transform them in any way. Eg: Nightblood, his sheath is made of aluminium. He does not turn non magical when he's sheathed, he's just contained.

  7. Thing is, we all have perfect color pitch (color-blinds just see less colors). We all know if a yellow is yellow effortlessly, without comparing it to red or blue, just like someone with perfect pitch recognizes a G4 when they hear it. BUT, a grid is needed to express the frequency heard. If that someone comes from a culture with f.e. a 4 note equitempered scale (the first being C) and all their melodies use only those, when they hear a G they will immediately know it's between their 2nd and 3rd notes, closer to the latter than the former, but they'll have no means to pinpoint it exactly. The same happens with colors: a painter may easily tell garnet from ruby, but for me it's just red. That's because I have a low-res grid and my brain cannot store those different shades separately, but not bc I don't have perfect pitch, I still can picture the shade of color in my head without reference like the aforementioned person can sing the note. This video isn't exactly about this but segments 3 and 5 could be useful. The interesting thing is we don't have relative color pitch, which is what everyone has with sound. That's because light doesn't interact in our cones/receptor system like sound does in our cochlea. We can tell if a sound interval is dissonant or sounds "harmoniously" without training, but no one can tell which shade of green the color-equivalent fifth of garnet's frequency is. And I think this is what Brandon was going for: Relative Color Pitch. He's always said that color and sound, tones, have a special place in his worldbuilding and the Cosmere. He's very interested in how these are shaped by perception. However, with this magic he aims for the opposite. He wants to show there's something underlying that perception, something objective that follows only the laws of nature. There's only one problem with all this: we only see the equivalent to an octave. What does this imply? The harmonics of a base frequency that could be grouped into the same color (like different shades of red), would be too far in the harmonic extension, meaning they would be so close that would be dissonant. So the palaces' rooms in Warbreaker would actually be even more hideous to those of 3rd+ Hightening than they are to us. Comparison to sound Harmonics of C1: C1 C2 G2 C3 E3 G3 Bb3 C4 D4 Fifths and thirds would be too far off (blue-greens and yellows for a red, respectively), only those within a 2nd would still count as red. Sound-wise, they might add a bit of color (pun intended) to a full chord, but only the tonic and second it's just plain dissonant. It's a very interesting theme and I love it, but I just think he was a bit too hasty when he introduced it in Warbreaker and it won't work as I would've liked it to. Of course, I respect the fact that Brandon can't go so deep in every aspect of the Cosmere, and some things will need some magical mumbo-jumbo to make them work in a roundabout way and that's fine. I'm just a wee bit disappointed because it seems color and sound will have huge implications in the future and I don't see this part working perfectly. If someone disagrees or thinks I'm on the wrong path I'd love to discuss!

  8. I hope the title is so generic that it should be no spoiler. Anyway, the reference should be clear in its murderous application. But why did it actually work? The Sand stores Investiture, which has to come from somewhere. It means that Spren bleed a bit of Investiture. Them being made of Investiture that may not be so much of a surprise. However, it raises an important question. Why don't Spren vanish over time? Cognitive Shadows do so, unless special measures are taken. So Spren must have at least a small source of Investiture. Considering this, it seems to me that the ability of te Stormfather and The Sibling to generate Investiture is not peculiar to them, it is just many orders of magnitude larger. How is this testable? It would be difficult, but in principle a talented Seeker should sense Spren, just as Vin sensed the Mist Spirit.

  10. So happy that this thread is thriving! 2021 has been crazy-busy for me at work, which is great for our small business but bad for me keeping up here on the Shard! My latest pen purchase was a Kaweko Frosted Sport - I got the Mandarine color because it looks just like orange sherbert (yum!). It's a nice pen, but the one I bought as a gift for a friend writes smoother than mine does, with the same size nib. So it seems like the nibs do vary a bit, but it's a $30 pen not $300, so no complaints. I have decided on an ink that's "my color" (at least for the time being) - it's Jacques Herbin Bleu Austral which is similar to their Emerald of Chivor but without the glitter and sheening. (Wish I could use sparkling inks, but my fine lefty-nibs get clogged too quickly. Oh well, you can't have everything.) I don't really have a grail pen, and as a fairly new homeowner I need to save for things like a new garage door or a sofa, but I am sorely tempted to splurge on one of the Sailor Pro Gear Slim FPs from the upcoming The Sound of Rain series - they are all so pretty! Particularly the Summer Rain one ... but, garage door ...

  11. Of course the bond works both ways. The spren becomes more Physical and more human through their bond with a Radiant. The most obvious case is with Stormfather. He has changed significantly since bonding Dalinar. Adolin isn't an entity made of pure Investiture, so changing his form into a sword wouldn't be possible, nor would he give Maya any magical abilities since he has no Connection to the fundamental surges of Roshar like a spren does. However, Adolin can share his humanity and Cognitive abilities with Maya, which is probably why she's awakening a bit. Because the reason for ending the bond has changed and the consequences for ending the bond aren't what she thought they would be?

  15. So as quoted above, at one passage Lightsong reflects on the fact that consuming enough food and drink would eventually require him to "visit the privy" as with anybody else, but he hadn't reached that threshold to need to go just yet (in terms of the time he'd spent waiting for the Allmother). But do they need to eat food to survive? No - at least that's what Lightsong thinks on p. 45, shortly before getting his weekly Breath from the child. He thinks he "doesn't really need to eat" mundane food, but really, how would he know? As someone who Returned not only in T'telir, where he would be revered as a god, he did so in the presence of someone who was already a priest at the Court of Gods! Short of actually Returning in the Court itself, one can hardly imagine a quicker path to divine pampering, LOL. So, despite what he thinks, he's never had to go without food for long enough to know what would happen to him without it. But he does know, and can feel, that he's near to death from running out of Investiture, since the Hallandren priests keep the Returned rationed to the minimum one Breath per week.

  17. There are sentences that you never want to hear your parents say. One of them is 'we need to have a talk.' We have to take our dog back to the shelter. She's got aggressive tendencies, and we've done everything we can, everything, and nothing has worked. So for safety, she has to go. There are people who can help with this, but not while she's in a big family. I feel like I'm half an inch behind myself, and a little up and to the left.

  18. Reading Warbreaker and the amount of breath for each heightening, I noticed that the amount of breath followed some kind of exponential function. So I tried to find the math law that they follow I started by plotting the amount of breath versus the level (Figure 1) taking into account an error of 1% for each level. This is because it is written that the amount for each level is not exact, so I assume a value that increases as the level does. ↑Figure 1: BioChromatic Breath for each Heightening Then I tried different basic functions, but I found that it doesn’t follow those. Eventually I divided every amount by 50 (Figure 2) and by the level squared (Figure 3). ↑Figure 2: Figure 1 divided by 50 ↑Figure 3: Figure 2 divided by Level Squared With this i started to try again with this formula () and found values for A, B and C that approximated the curve. then i expanded the formula so the results approximated Figure 1, i got Eq. (1) Using OriginLab I plotted Figure 1, and fitted using Eq. (1). And i got Figure 4: ↑Figure 4: Figure 1 fitted using Eq. (1) The values for this formula are: Replacing the level we got this values: This aren’t very accurate, but they are very near, and may be the real values that are approximated in the books. Be aware that there is an unknown error to this values, they could be less or more Conclusion The most probable thing is that Brandon picked random values for each level, but it still was fun to try and find out this law. Replacing for an 11th heightening we get around 120000 breaths for it. If in the future there are more levels, and they follow this formula i would be very happy. Keep in mind they will most probably not follow this.

  19. This theory came to my mind after I read some of death rattles that still have no meaning Turns out there are some sentence that foreshadow a great body of water that fall from a very long storms. That storms can possibly be everstorm/highstorm or perhaps combination of both A man stood on a cliffside and watched his homeland fall into dust. The waters surged beneath, so far beneath. And he heard a child crying. They were his own tears —Collected on Tanatesev 1171, 30 seconds pre-death, by the Silent Gatherers. Subject was a cobbler of some renown. I believe this rattle refers to szeth’s feeling. Sinovar, Szeth’s home, have many mountain that surround it. Will sinovar crumble then got flooded? I'm cold. Mother, I'm cold. Mother? Why can I still hear the rain? Will it stop? —Collected on Vevishes 1172, 32 seconds pre-death, by the Silent Gatherers. Subject was a lighteyed female child, approximately six years old. This one refers to a rosharan people feeling amidst this very long storm. Light grows so distant. The storm never stops. I am broken, and all around me have died. I weep for the end of all things. He has won. Oh, he has beaten us. —Collected on Palahakev 1173, 16 seconds pre-death, by the Silent Gatherers. Subject was a Thaylen sailor. This might implied that it will be cause by odium (Now Todium). Very long storm will cause the sun to be blocked so sky will turn into night. You might also can find ‘long night’ foreshadowing from this : So the night will reign, for the choice of honor is life... —Observed circa Ishi 1173 by Taravangian. Subject was King Valam of Jah Keved. The day was ours, but they took it. Stormfather! You cannot have it. The day is ours. They come, rasping, and the lights fail. Oh, Stormfather! —Collected circa Tanat 1173 by Taravangian. Subject was a young boy. The darkness becomes a palace. Let it rule! Let it rule! —Collected on Kakevah 1173, 22 seconds pre-death, by the Silent Gatherers. Subject was a darkeyed Selay man of unknown profession. I believe this will happened in book 5. Brandon need a bitter ending for book 5 so stormlight archive can continue through book 6 to 10. I believe Todium will somehow create eternal global storm on roshar. This will cause catastrophic apocalyptic event that make living people of roshar migrate to shadesmar. Remember that shadesmar have reverse ecology to the real world? Land in shadesmar is sea in real world while sea in real world is land. So this flood will make shadesmar more occupiable with more land than before. But I believe not all of roshar will be flooded. Mountain will still stand tall above waters so urithru and horneater peak most likely still be safe. This will become a great strategic tool to make dalinar lose. If dalinar lose, Todium will have him to become his general to conquer the rest of cosmere. With this, Todium will be not afraid to lose. If dalinar win, he will still need to have conquer another cosmere’s world or at least will have to find any new world to occupy. They can’t live in Shadesmar forever. After all, if they can, why did people of ashyn (Human in Roshar ancestors) conquer roshar in the first place?

  20. So, this is something that has been bugging me for a while. In the epigraphs of the Way of Kings (possibly WoR, I haven’t checked ‘cause I’m lazy) it says that Odium is the most dangerous of the 16 Shards. So, if Odium is the antagonist of the Stormlight Archive, then who will be the antagonist of the greater Cosmere plot? The answer: Odium himself. Let me explain. It has been established that Odium is raising an army to fight in a “greater war.” Whether Taravangian is continuing this plot is a matter of debate, but for the purpose of this theory, I’ll assume he is. It seems like Taravangian would want to rule the cosmere so that he could “save” it. So, I believe either KoW or SA 10 will end with Odium being freed from Roshar and going to go raise his army somewhere else during the time between SA and Era 4 Mistborn. It would be a nice ending for the SA characters, but it would leave loose ends for Era 4 to tie up. Let me know if I missed anything obvious. Or, if you have any thoughts that might help me expand on this.

  22. Alright, this was a kind of dumb idea I had not long ago, but I personally found it rather amusing to select theme songs for various cosmere characters, and I think some of y'all will find it amusing to assign them songs that match them (seriously or otherwise, mine are mostly otherwise) as well. Here are some that I came up with yesterday (OB and Mistborn spoilers, you've been warned): Dalinar Kolin: Turisas - End of an Empire Ati (Ruin): Dope - Die MF Die Kelsier: 2WEI - Surivivor Kaladin: Nightwish - 10th Man Down Evi: Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire Waxillium Ladrian: Orden Ogan - Gunman/Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down Veil: Korpiklaani - Vodka Paalm: Banners - Start aa Riot Gaz: Manuel - Gas, Gas, Gas, Tyn: The Offspring - You're Gonna Go Far, Kid Wayne: Alestorm - Drink Vin + Elend (WoA): OMAM - King & Lionheart Lord Ruler: Coldplay - Viva la Vida (or alternately Brandon Sanderfans W/ Ben & Sam - Old Lord Ruler) Meridas Amaram: Nightwish - Amaranth (okay, okay, I just couldn't help myself). These are just a few lovely possibilities. Fire away, mates!

He's talking about the way humanity has progressed on Scadrial since his Ascension. “You don’t explore, Harmony continued, ignoring Wax’s confusion. Why would you? You have everything you want here. You’ve barely progressed technologically from what I gave you in the books. Yet others, who were nearly destroyed …” Could the "others, who were nearly destroyed" be a reference to mankind on Roshar? People that were nearly destroyed by Desolations, and then built up technology and civilization for thousands of years afterwards? Even if this is the case, it's really not much at all, but I thought it was an interesting idea.

  34. I do agree with many of you that Sazed needs Wax as his sword as he mentions in the letters, however, I always thought of that as in Harmony needs an agent that he doesn't need to direct as much as he does the Kandra. Someone who can carry his will across places he can't go. When it comes to Shard vs Shard fight, like we're talking Splintering level, I'd like to think Sazed taps into his warrior side and learns to use Ruin to attack and Preservation to defend. It might even come as a revelation to him mid-fight that this is what he needs to maintain Harmony, and therefore finally snap in tune with his Shard's intent. I think the source of his struggle is he tries to repress the Ruin side and that binds him by automatically repressing his Preservation instincts, thereby crippling him from doing anything. When put in a difficult situation I think he'll manage to use both properly. When he was human he was able to fight when necessary, and even kill to protect, I just think he needs a threat dire enough to activate that instinct in this mode, and the Shard's Intent shouldn't interfere, because by acting he'll be preserving Harmony.

  35. FUN! Tension: Reinforces Spiritual Bonds, possibly makes temporary effects permanent Alternates: Transportation: Mass/Area Transport (ie Oathgate-style) Transformation/Cohesion: Large-scale Fractal Construction (ie WIndblades) Progression: Mass Crop Growth Given that the interactive map is specific to the sky perspective of the Storm, it's reasonable to think the other two will be distinct. Division (Nightwatcher): the Opposite of Spiritual Adhesion Illumination (Sibling): Illumination (Nightwatcher): some sort of life sense map, based on those vine-tentacles and too many re-runs of Avatar. The more I write the more I think this is a rabbit hole. Each Bondsmith could theoretically have different effects with each of the different Surges AND combined with each (or Both) of theirs. So, max each Bondsmith could have three unique interactions per Surge (Adhesion, Tension, Both), with effects as distinct as their Godspren.

Imo a radiant ending up in the champ battle would not be a problem. Though bondsmiths, heralds and unmade seem to outclass the regular radiants it seems like choosing something unkillable would be the easy choice. Of course, the possibility of Dalinar simply bringing 20 spheres loaded with antivoidlight to the duel might deter anything too spren-like. Imo, weaseling out of the battle is the only viable option for odium. Especially if the goal is to not fully destroy Dalinar.

  37. I apologize for the lack of a greeting. This message, for lack of a better word, has far too many possible recipients to use a general introduction. Faleast felt... odd. It was good to be back, to his home... but he wasn't really back, was he. It had been twenty-five years, but the events of the coup were well set into everyone's mind, and they remembered. They remembered the incursions from the Loyalists - strange, how the People's Republic's most devoted members called themselves by the same name as those who had formerly tried to take them down after the shift in power. They remembered how quickly they fell in the anti-coup, how they'd made the core of those they'd trusted - Darson, TJ, Reginald, Pyria, and Faleast. Faleast had things hidden from him, but he was still in the group. And then he'd killed both Pyria and Darson. Pyria had been one of the Loyalists, deep in hiding, for which the People's Republic of Elendel had been greatful... but Darson had been a true leader of the group, and his death had been a heavy blow to the others. The result was intriguing. Enough was known about the shapeshifters that the living PRE founders believed Faleast had nothing to do with AraRaash's actions, which... wasn't entirely true, but at that point in time it was true enough. However, they also knew the Faleast they knew and confided in was just a façade made by the kandra trying to bring down both sides, and they barely knew anything of Faleast before his... incident, including which cause he had originally supported. So Faleast was a wild card in the PRE's history: not revered like the survivors, not vilified like the Loyalists, not remembered like the fallen PRE members... just, noted. Noted that his actions were not his fault, but the dark stain of blood could not be shaken. AraRaash, of course, was Public Enemy Number One. Yes, he'd killed many more of the anti-PRE Loyalists than true souls, but that tended to be brushed under the rug. Originally he was hunted for being the killer of Darson, but over time as the People's Republic settled itself the higher-ups realized he was a convenient figure. Impossible to find - more impossible then they knew, in fact - and the only survivor of that final incursion known to oppose the PRE, he became a figurehead for the leader of anyone who opposed their regime. Whether the People's Republic leaders actually believed that or not, Faleast didn't know, but he knew the concept of giving someone to hate. AraRaash was very proud. So, Faleast was currently going by Fal, and looked about 23. He'd gotten some odd looks, as people realized he was named after a rather controversial figure, but it was better than going by Reg, like a good quarter of the teenagers did. Scadrian coat, and a few metal vials of several different varieties around his waist. Good to keep multiple covers. But he couldn't wear his old face, his old name, his old duster. Still... it was good to be back. (Hello! I forget the rules on doing >200 analysis and >200 RP in one post, so I'll do that in a bit. But I think you can guess which one is my priority at the moment.)

But it's no biggie; I'll just put light grey lines on it and go from there. And thank you for the warm welcome.

  46. I just recently received my first fountain pens. A set of four from Jinhao. Ink I had to order separately, and is supposed to start arriving tomorrow. Actually today, since I'm writing this after midnight. I, too, am a lefty, and in all the reading I've done on the subject of FPs, I ordered pens with Fine nibs. I'm too poor to buy any of those fancy notebooks right now, so I am going to try some HP Premium32 paper. I've read good things about it, as far as fountain pens are concerned. I somehow came across an article about writers doing their first drafts by hand. I can't even remember what it was I was looking for when I started reading about writers actually writing. As a writer myself, I decided to try it. I like it. The book I'm working on now is being written with a twelve-cent ballpoint, but I'll be switching to one of my FPs for another after that. One of the ink orders I made from Goulet is their "Surprise Me" eight-pack sampler. I'll find out what colors they are when they get here. The pens and some other inks I got from Amazon. A bottle of Noodler's bulletproof EEL Black, and a package of International Standard cartridges in seven different colors. My wife might end up hiding my pens just to get me to stop writing with them and being anti-social. So we'll see how everything goes once my ink gets here. Sorry for such a long maiden voyage post.

  47. Regarding Shallan's big secret, the massive, horrible secret that she won't even allow herself to think about and is somehow worse than killing both of her parents- here are some ridiculous theories I thought of that are definitely incorrect. Shallan is the true heir of Jah Keved Shallan is the Survival Shard in deep cover Shallan formed a nahel bond with another spren before Pattern, but she broke that bond and killed the spren in the process Shallan is actually a complicated automaton powered by fabrials Shallan was taken by her parents to see the Nightwatcher, and wished for something horrible Shallan is actually a man Shallan is a worldhopper from Ashyn Shallan is Hoid's daughter Shallan is the Sibling in disguise Shallan is Adolin's half-sister Shallan is Trell (Stormlight comes before Mistborn Era 2, remember) Shallan isn't actually Vorin Shallan used a hemalurgic spike to steal Pattern's bond from the person who he was actually meant to bond Shallan is a Sleepless (Dysian Aimian) Shallan is a Returned feeding subconsciously on Stormlight
