  3. Harmony can't find Invention again after initial contact, implying they are not on a planet. Perhaps on a spaceship flotilla or one giant spaceship. A society with no planet would necessitate a lot of invention and creative use of resources, satisfying the Shard intent. Everyday living under Invention's influence is like this:

  4. Duncan rose, and picked up his coat. Putting it on was tiring. It felt like a lifetime of scars. How many tours had it been, since that first on Nebrask? The Forgotten used you. Wyrmed their way into your head. They got you to kill, to do their dirty work for them. To suspect the others in your squad and platoon, until they'd turned on each other, until they'd died, and Duncan had run, and run, and tried to forget, even as the medals glinted on the others' chests as they were honoured for surviving Nebrask and Duncan court-martialed for desertion and sent back. Darkness in Wyatt's eyes as he smiled. He killed them. Kessen and Tory both, but his courage failed him when Wyatt awoke, and whispered, "They'll never believe you, you know." Duncan knew. And now he was back on Nebrask, and it was happening, all over again, and it was breaking his heart, but— "Do your duty, soldier," Wyatt had said, at the very beginning, when Duncan still thought they were on the same side. He had done his duty. And now, he was going to do his duty all over again. "Frederick," Duncan whispered. "I'm coming for you, little brother." The war never ended. Some wars came home with you. But Duncan Kerr had been lost for a very long time, now. And broken. With grief in his heart and duty in his spine, Duncan Kerr went to war again.

  5. Someone upvoted this recently, which reminded me of it (had completely forgot this thread). And, after RoW, I am kind of proud that I randomly guessed this one year ahead. Taravangian = Odium? - Stormlight Archive - 17th Shard, the Official Brandon Sanderson Fansite

  6. TJ was searching for the promised land. With his map, he was trying to locate a defensible location with plenty of items. Following the trail inscribed on it, he found an ancient temple, that predated all the Rithmatists. Along with a host of items, there, in the center of the room was a vigilant Shadowblaze, keeping watch over his home. He uttered a prayer of thanks to the Master. Unfortunately, in his reverence, he did not notice the Forgotten creeping behind him with a knife. TJ had reached the promised land, and would go no further. A Respected Madman was searching for the promised land. He didn't believe in this war anymore. Forgotten, Rithmatist, what did it matter? He just wanted a warm bed and a warm meal. It didn't matter to him who was in charge. And so, he was gathering supplies. In the midst of this all out war, he would need as many Bribes as he could muster. He took one last look at the Camp, and counting his supplies, he decided he had enough. He sneaked away under the cover of darkness that night. He had reached the promised land, and would go no further. The Forgotten were searching for the promised land. They wanted a world free from Nebrask, free from the Rithmatists, free from the shackles that had confined them for so long. They had already suffered two casualties on this mission, but they would do whatever it took. They had finally started their coup, and no band of Rithmatists would stand in their way. They had reached the promised land, and they would go further. TJ Shade has died. He was a Rithmatist. STINK has completed his win condition, and has left the Camp. He was the Thief. Camp Supply: Player List: This Day will end at 8 PM CST on February 11th.

  7. Kaladin figuring out things, then dealing with them in like not a violent way is way more interesting character than Kaladin-the killing machine. Him deciding to find the lost guy, bossing ardents around and setting upo therapy courses was way more fun and interesting to read about than him killing Parshendi #204353. I looked back at previous books and confirmed that - Kaladin making the life of Bridge 4 better in TWoK, Kaladin organizing Kholin's guard in WoR and Kaladin finding out who Azure is while befriending Kholinar's soldiers in OB were the most interesting parts about Kaladin's PoV. Id prefer Brandon to shift Kaladin's focus from active battles to mental health clinic set up and ambassadory things.

  9. ...is in space. I was over in the RoW meme thread and I saw a post from @Child of Hodor which gave me this idea. I believe me know that at least one of the shards is not invested on a planet. What if it's Invention? And here's the twist, what if this is where Silverlight is located? We don't have any information so it's all just speculation. But there must be some reason Silverlight is located where it is. And i like the idea that the home to a Cognitive Realm University is located where Invention has manifest. Edit: I forgot about the survival shard. It likely Wisdom or something along those lines. This definitely fits.

  10. Duncan tried to sleep but felt he was walking in a nightmare. Rithmatists moved, patrolled. Everyone tried to keep their spirits up. After all, they'd found two Forgotten among them already. Two down, Duncan thought, darkly. Three more to go, if they were unlucky. He hoped they were not. Master grant they were not. "I told you, you know," Matt said, casually, and Duncan jerked upright on his bedroll. Matt smiled, though his eyes were hard. Matt had always had a commanding presence, a way of getting the squad to stop and listen, when he spoke, "I told you. There was something strange about Wyatt. I told you..." Except he hadn't, Duncan thought numbly. Except he was dead and they'd found him, broken upon the earth, and it had been the first sign the platoon had been compromised, and Master help him, because Duncan had tried, and Duncan had failed and their medic couldn't save him and they'd pronounced him dead a few minutes later. "Keep watch," Wyatt had said, and Duncan had believed him, because Wyatt had been calm and assured, and knew what to do, and there was a casual air about Wyatt, the air of a senior soldier, one who'd seen it all and knew what to do, and who was still entrusting you with what needed to be done, and he made you want to trust him, and so it was Duncan's hand that drew the lines, and Duncan who stood watch. "This is wrong," Duncan whispered, as Tory beat Dig over the head with his shovel, until the man lay crumbled in the hole he was beginning to dig up. He swallowed, and tried hard to look away. He specialised in defense, not in lines that choked Dig's dying screams, if there had been any at all. He'd liked Dig. Wyatt gripped his shoulders. "Stay with me, soldier," he said, unbothered, and Duncan wanted to scream and run, but Wyatt had him. "Remember. If Dig was taken by one of the Forgotten, then he's not one of us anymore. He's not a brother." "Was he?" Duncan managed. "Oh, yes," Wyatt said. "Orders straight from the CO herself. Kingswright thinks he's Forgotten. You did too, didn't you?" Not like this, he wanted to say, but— "You going to fall apart on me now, soldier?" Wyatt asked. "No," Duncan managed. "I'm fine." "Good man," Wyatt said, approvingly. "Enough like you in this squad, and we'll hold the line without a single breach until our tour ends." Duncan lay unseeing on his bedroll, and wept.

  11. I really want the Chana theory to be true because that makes Shallan’s inability to admit the truth so much more plausible and relatable (at least to my own psychology) Sure, someone might repress killing both of their parents in self defence. I get that. But I also get knowing deep down that what you did was the right thing. Shallan knows what she did with her parents was the right thing. It doesn’t seem that killing her parents is as truly awful as killing Testament. And even then, did Shallan even know she was killing Testament and just not being friends anymore? Maybe depending on what Testament told Shallan. But even then, it sort of makes sense with what a kid might need to do in that situation (especially if it is "just a spren" that is "immortal"). I am not convinced Shallan really knew what she had done until she learned what Deadeyes are and how they are made. But killing a herald and ending the world? And knowing your mother/herald was 100% for sure being mercilessly tortured by voidbringers? Because of you? That's concrete. That is something a kid understands. That’s something that would leave a person “unable to laugh”. Who wouldn’t be insensate at that? Imagine being told over and over by relations that your mother was in a better place now, but you KNEW that wasn’t the case. And not only that, but you aren't even being punished. Your father is taking the blame for what you did, and you can see how much everyone you love despises him for it, and they dont even know the extent of the atrocity! And then realizing your mother was a god and realizing a god HATED you and tried to kill you for the good of the world. Each time someone praises the heralds, Shallan has to repress the knowledge that a herald despised Shallan and wanted her dead for being “one of them”. How do you deal with that? Devote yourself more to the church? Does that ever go well for “abominations?” Can she take comfort in her father? Her father is devolving into an evil man, and that evil man loves ONLY her. He is driven to such rage - to such horrors - to protect her. Her? She is vile and one of the most evil people in the world. Her father's psychotic devotion is just further proof of how wretched she is. Growing up any moment of joy would be ruined by a rogue thought of her mother being scalded, skewered, or worse. Any comfort at “a better place” would be a punch to the gut. How could you ever truly enjoy your life when you knew your life had cost the world, a god, and your mother so much? This is why Shallan says over and over that she does not deserve joy or happiness. She’s evil. She was told so by a herald and by her mother, and because of Shallan each day her mother is burned alive. One day her mother will break, and the world will end, and everyone will know it was Shallan’s fault How could she not repress that? I would. I get that lie and likely would support repressing it myself.

  12. Something happened that made me start to think that Dominoes Pizza is really a cult. (But not really, the cult part is a joke. But the rest of the story is true.) One day, our family ordered some pizza- one regular-sized pizza with cheese, and two small cheese-free pizzas for us weirdos who can't have milk. We opened the larger pizza box, and on the inside of the lid, there were four dots of some red substance. It was too deep a red to be pizza sauce, so our conclusion was it's either some red ink (It looked to be about the same hue as the red on the pizza box) or blood. Just to be safe, my dad called the pizza place and asked for a replacement pizza, just in case it was blood. It probably wasn't, but still. We got the new pizza and my dad showed the employees some pictures of the red splatters(To prove he wasn't crazy or just scamming to get a free pizza), after we found two more red spots. (Cue the pictures) Still, it probably wasn't blood. But, to make sure, we wanted to do a test to see how similar the splotches look to blood, so we sterilized a sewing needle, and my dad said whoever was willing to prick themselves got five bucks. My older brother, @Enter a username, immediately said he would. I mean, it was for science, so why not? He tried pricking himself, but it didn't work, so my dad tried it himself, but still couldn't. Then I suggested something. I have these weird bumps on my arms that I sometimes pick at, so I had a few teeny scabs that I said I was willing to break open to get some blood out. I was able to get out some and smeer it onto a piece of cardboard we ripped off of another pizza box. Once the blood dried, it looked exactly the same. Same hue, same sheen, same way it dried, everything. It was uncanny. But, we wanted another sample that was dripped instead of smeared, so I picked off another scab and laid on my back with my feet up to try to get enough blood to drip the same way as the pizza box to compare the to. Want to see the results? Same. Exact. Storming. Stuff. My dad called Dominoes and told them what we found out, and that brings me to my hypothesis: Dominoes is a cult. I think that the way Dominoes gets the red ink for their pizza boxes is from the blood of their enemies (A.K.A. the people who leave bad reviews about their pizza), and the pizza store is a front, and the way they get their money. That's my conspiracy theory. (I don't actually think Dominoes pizza is a cult. That was a joke. But the bloody pizza box was real.) And that, my friends, is how I became a blood donor, for science. (Even though I didn't get that five bucks.)

  14. SPOILERS AND ADDED INFORMATION: I had posted other bits of this else where in 2020 before the "Taln never broke" WOB, but consolidated all the ideas here in this post This theory and post came out before Rhythm of War, but updates have been made to include information from ROW SA5 Prologue: This is not discussed to avoid spoilers, but SA5 Prologue has some interesting information --- Weird Questions: 1) TALN BREAKING SEEMS ODD What broke Taln? He is crazy and insensate for 4000 years and then one day he says "No thank you". What could have broke Taln? And, in terms of timelines, Taln returned before the Everstorm crossed into the physical realm, so it can't be that the Everstorm freed Taln. Yes the Everstorm was in the Cognitive, but all the doom and gloom seemed to be about the Everstorm being pulled in the Physical Realm by Eshoni and her team. Since Taln returns at the end of The Way of Kings, then Taln must return in a way that is not related to Eshoni. And as I mentioned before, I don't think it makes sense that Odium suddenly found a way to break Taln after 4000 years of trying. Edit: we later got a WOB that Taln did not break 2) DAVAR FAMILY CONNECTIONS Why was the Davar family so connected to secret societies despite being a Vaden house of little note? They have connections to the Ghostbloods and the Ghostbloods have handed them a confirmed soulcaster AND possibly a Seon box. Why? And it seems Skybreakers may have been visiting as well for "reasons". As well, the Skybreakers are breaking paterns when it comes to the Davars. As far as we know, Shallan's older brother is the only Skybreaker to be using a dead blade. Is this special treatment for a member of the Davar family? And finally, Mraize seems to know the Davar family well enough to recognize the name immediately. The Davars would need to be pretty active for that name recognition to be so apparent. 3) CHILD SHALLAN AND HER IMPORTANCE Why did the cryptic go to Shallan as a child? Lift was chosen due to her strange connection to Cultivation, but why Shallan? And why twice? And what were Shallan's parents fighting about? Shallan remembers her parents having huge fights over Shallan's future starting from a very young age. What was that about? Connected to that, why is an dark influence attacking the Davar family? Why is Heleran given a shardblade and brought into the skybreakers? No other Skybreaker acolyte was given a dead-blade and sent to war (that we know of), so why is Helaran so non-standard? Shallan's parents also fight A LOT about Shallan's future. This seems to be a hint that Chanarach had a major plan for Shallan. 4) MAMA DAVAR IN THE KNOW Why was Shallan's mother so quick to try and kill "one of them". How does she know "them" so clearly? Why would she have such a quick and radical reaction? 5) MORE SECRETS What is Shallan's last secret. There is still something horrible in Shallan's past, and this has something to do with a Seon box and whatever Radiant was created to protect Shallan from. What is worse than killing testament? We also have strange internal thoughts from Shallan from WOR in Chapter 10: "The world ended; and Shallan was to blame". This thought has never been explained. What did Shallan do to end the world? "The world ended, and Shallan was to blame.- Words of Radiance, Chapter 10. Mentioned by @honorblades Another strange but overlooked instance occurs in TWoK when Shallan almost summons her Shardblade: If this is indeed Patters/Testement, then why would that Spren ask "What are you?" Testament should full-well know "what" Shallan is in terms of her being a human or a semi-radiant or anything like that. If this voice is Testament, then asking "What are you?" is very odd in my opinion. Shallan answers "I am terrified", but to me that always seemed ... not what the voice was asking Shallan. I always felt there was more to this that simply speaking truths. 6) THE FAMILY'S SAFE AND THE GLOWING LIGHTS ARE IMPORTANT (main data point for me creating this theory) People are very quick to discount Shallan's recollection of Lin Davar placing a glowing soul into a safe. I have always been very confused as to why Shallan is taken as "lying" to herself in this scene. Shallan has no reason to lie about the item being her mother's soul instead of a Shardblade. Lin Davar acted extremely quickly in that situation and made sure to place the item in that safe before dealing with any other issues. That to me is extremely telling. Why would Lin think the Shadblade wouldn't disappear eventually whenever Shallan dismissed it? Why would Lin think the Shardblade would stay in a safe if he managed to place it there quickly? Why would Lin so quickly run to place the item in the safe in the first place? Why is there an unused safe in that room? And then why do Shallan and Lin seem to continually see light coming from that safe for years and years? None of that vibes with "it is just a blade and Shallan is lying to herself" in any way. I just don't get it. Shallan having a Shardblade is not in anyway covered up by this lie, nor is the lie that Shallan killed her spren hidden by this lie either? There is no mental cover-up being done by Shallan making up a lie here. It seems everyone else dismisses Shallan, including Pattern, in favour of "Lynn put a sword in there". 7) EDIT FOR ROW: Then in ROW we get the timeline, and this does not hold up to scrutiny either. Shallan says her father put the item into the safe. WoR Shallan thinks that was a soul, but Pattern convinces her she is misremembering and that the item was a dead spren-blade. But that can't be a dead spren blade because Shallan has not unbonded Testament yet. Shallan does not think that a spren is trapped in that safe and we know this because Shallan then leaves to go speak with her spren in the garden AFTER the item is placed in the safe. Shallan acts immediately as a child in a way that doesn't even consider that her "blade" is in that safe. It just doesn't make sense to think a blade was placed into that safe based on the reactions of the two witnesses involved (which we learn Pattern is not one of) We take it from Pattern that Shallan is wrong here in her memory. However, In ROW we learn that Pattern is NOT an eyewitness to what went down in that room. Pattern sure has a lot of opinions about what Shallan saw, but Pattern was not actually there in the room and cannot actually know what Shallan saw go into the safe. Pattern assumed Shallan is lying to herself as Pattern sees many other lies around that event. But Pattern has no knowledge about who Mother-Davar was, what the safe was for, or why Skybreaker/Ghostbloods may have been in the home. Pattern is not a credible source of information on the events of that day. Shallan is the only living witness, and the actions of her father are consistent with the understanding Shallan had as a child. Shallan too noticed her father staring at the direction of the safe and the light. Only later in life is Shallan told again and again that her memory of those events are wrong by people who were not there. Both Lin and Shallan believe something is in the safe, and a sword does not match the other data points we have. There is "light" in that safe, and it is leaking out over time. And where di the blood come from? A Shardblade should not have done that. The blood has to be some other injury? The box is something. The light was something. Pattern is making assumptions and is wrong about this history with the safe. And why does Shallan see a glowing light coming from the box? Is it a soul like she believes? We learn in RoW that no herald soul can be trapped completely, and that the light of a herald will slowly leak out (is that what Shallan was seeing her whole childhood come out of the safe?). Is it her mother's soul escaping slowly to Braize? Or maybe could it be a perfect gem with Mishram inside? Who knows? But it is something. We have seen other glowing lights (Dawnshard and Dalinar hearing TwoK), so is she just mad, or did she really see something? Whatever it is, it does not make sense that Shallan thinks Testament is trapped in the safe if Shallan went and yelled at Testament after her mother was killed. Something was put into that safe, and to me the most likely answer is "her mother's soul". And firhermore, there is no reason to believe that Lin Davar would think a safe would ever prevent a Shardblade from reappearing in Shallan's hands. 8) HOID and MIDDLEFEST Hoid is downright shocked to see child-Shallan at the Middlefest celebration. Hoid sees something, but that something is unclear. When we originally read WOR, we assume HOpid is shocked to see a Radiant Child or perhaps a bonded spren. However, Shallan does not have a regular active sprenbond at the time of Middlefest, so Hoid did not see Testament or an active radiant bond There are a few things Hoid may have seen: a. Hoid saw Odium's touch on her family b. a dead-blade living-radiant connection line was still active c. the Cryptic team that watched Shallan. d. Shallan is so obviously a part of Chanarach that Hoid was gobsmacked by the resemblance. e. Shallan is noticeably different than other Rosharans due to her strange parentage. But whatever Hoid saw, it was not an active Spren Bond since we know Testament is a deadeye at that point in the story. ---- It All Put Together - A Timeline 1) JAH KAVED Chararach settled in the Davar estate in rural Jah Kaved. Chanarach is involved in several of the secret societies of Roshar just like most of the other heralds we have seen. Chanarach learns of the theory that a return of surgebinders will bring about a desolation. Chararach is completely terrified of returning to Braize and supports the culling of nascent surgebinding. Chanarach is involved in research and is a part of the search to create a method that prevents a herald from returning to Braize upon death. Kalak is also involved. 2) COMMUNICATION NETWORKS Chanarach commands a fair bit of influence and even has a Seon to communicate off world. It is unclear who knows who Chanarach is, but as she did settle in a rural area it is likely Chana's identity is not common knowledge even within secret societies (similar to Restares and Amaram). Chana exerts some form of influence and stays in-the-know with investiture theory and is able to contact others on Roshar or off-world. 3) CREATING THE SAFE Chana tries to devise a way to never return to Braize. She creates a special kind of safe that her soul could be placed in to. She thinks it will entirely prevent a return or will greatly delay her return to Braize. Chana has no way to test this as there are no herald-souls or returned-souls to experiment with. Possibly, the safe is akin to the Seon box in design or the safe may even actually be the Seon Box Shallan remembers playing with as a child? At some point, Chana tells Lin Davar what to do in case she is ever killed (place her soul into the box). In ROW we learn Kelek has some knowledge on this herald soul-leakage issue, so perhaps he was also involved in the Soul Box experiments in some way. 4) SHALLAN IS BORN Chanarach eventually has a daughter and names that daughter after her friend Shalash (Shallan says she was named after Shalash). Shallan may not be a "typical" offspring. She seems to be different from her brothers in some meaningful way. Perhaps Shallanis a cutting of Chararach or maybe Shallan conceived through some form or parthenogenetic process. Perhaps Shallan was created using breaths, as Tyn notes that Shallan seems to see colours better than most other people. EDIT: In a later WOB we learned that that non-returned Cognitive Shadows have had children Edit: In a later WOB we learned that Heralds can have children but it is complicated and effortful to do. Chana has special plans for Shallan. We know from WoR that Shallan's parents fought A LOT about Shallan's future. This implies to me that Shallan is somehow more intentionally convieved than her male siblings, and that Chana had something planned for Shallan that Lynn Davar had moral misgivings about. We are not sure what this is, but I think a lot of us will assume it has something to do with the Oathapact and/or returning to Braize. 5) SHALLAN IS DETECTED BY SPREN The Cryptics find out that one of the heralds has children or they discover a weird child who stands-out and is similar to the child of a Returned. The Cryptics send a delegation to investigate (WOB confirms heralds can have children though maybe it is difficult). At the same time, an unmade is drawn to the family. Testament begins to bond Shallan similar to what happened with Lift. Shallan eventually discovers what her mother is by playing with a Seon box at the Davar estate. The unmade's influence increases in an attempt to get the Herald to go insane and potentially get herself killed by Lin Devar or Shallan. 6) SHALLAN IS DETECTED BY SKYBREAKERS Shallan is discovered to be a surge binder by her mother. Her mother, fearing a return to Braize, refers to Shallan as "one of them". Note that Chanarach does not seem surprised that surgebinders are real. Chanarach has an absolute PTSD breakdown and attacks her daughter. Lin, who likely knew, steps in and Shallan is able to kill her mother in self defence. Lin Devar takes something and locks it away in the safe. We are told this is the Shardblade and Shallan's mother's soul. Shallan goes to the garden to scream at Testament and break her bond AFTER Testament is supposedly locked away in the safe. This timeline does not make sense even if we believe Testament could escape the safe. Why does Shallan believe her spren was trapped but also then in the garden? And how is Testament-blade = her mother's soul? There isn't a connection there logically. 7) SHALLAN KILLS A HERALD AND THEN TALKS TO TESTAMENT IN THE GARDEN After Shallan kills her mother, Shallan goes to Testament and breaks her bond. It is possible Testament told her more here as well. Shallan then begins to repress everything since Shallan has, in her mind, done the most evil act in history. "The world ended, and Shallan was to blame.- Words of Radiance, Chapter 10. Mentioned by @honorblades 8) CORRUPTION SETS IN Lin Devar begins to be corrupted even more. Lin also has mental guilt and wrestles with killing his herald-wife to save his daughter. He beings to protect Shallan at all costs for reasons that may be more than just guilt. Then Davar family hell ensues. The ghostbloods continue to cultivate the family. The Ghostbloods may not believe a herald could be killed by Lin or may not know she was a Herald. The Cryptics stay with Shallan as they don't blame her for what happened. They are still curious about what Shallan is and are researching what happens to a bonded-deadeye to its original radiant. The dark influence in the house may be more than an unmade as well. One of Chana's divine attributes is "obedient". I think this is significant. Lin is driven to rage every time one of his children will not obey him, and the word obey is emphasized many times. It may be possible the Lin's rage was a dark consequence of something Chana was doing, the safe's magical effects, or something else. It is also possible that Lin thought his children would inherit the divine attribute, and the fact they dont obey him drives him to rage. 9) BRAIZE AND SOUL LEAKAGE Chanarach returns to Braize. It may have taken some time for her to get to Braize. It seems the soul is leaking out of the safe over time (ROW: as we see with Jezrian in the gem). Or maybe it takes 5 years to find Chana on Braize since arrival was unexpected and because in earlier returns the heralds were able to "hide" for some time. Either way, the other heralds do not know that that has happened as they cannot detect the pain-bond while on Roshar. Edit: Ishar created the oathpact so he may be able to sense changes in it. 10) HOID SEES SHALLAN Shallan, with no bond, goes to Middlefest. Wit's magic or memory allow him to detect that there is something very strange about Shallan. Wit somehow knows what Shallan fights "is not truly natural" and encourages her to make a path for the light. It is unclear what Wit saw, but he knew more than the fact she was a surgebinder (even though she's actually a deadeye-binder at the time). 11) CHANA IS CAPTURED ON BRAIZE Chanarach is eventually found on Braize. For some reason, Chana either breaks to the pain or gives in to some deal Odium offers. It may have taken a while or been immediate. What is strange is that Chana has not been seen returning to Roshar, either Chana took some deal meaning she did not have to return or perhaps she intentionally landed somewhere remote. 12) TALN RETURNS WITHOUT BREAKING THE OATH Taln returns to Roshar completely insane and without breaking. What happens to Chanarach is unknown. All assume Taln broke. 13) SHALLAN BEGINS TO REMEMBER THAT HER MOTHER WAS A HERALD Radiant is created from memories of Shallan's mother. Or potentially, Radiant is somehow part of Chanarach. Radiant dresses in the same blue and red warrior outfit as the Herald Chanarach in artworks. Radiant is Shallan's repressed memories of who her mother was. It is also possible that Radiant is in someway Shallan's mother (connection mumbo jumbo and cognitive shadow stuff along with cultivation weirdness possibilities) Here is a description of Radiant: “She [Radiant] had chosen to wear her vakama; the traditional Vaden’s warrior clothing. It was similar to the Alethi takama but the skirt was pleeted instead of straight. She wore a loose matching coat with a tight vest and shirt beneath. The bright clothing features vibrant blues embroidered over reds with gold woven between and it had trim on the skirt” Here is Chanarach: 14) TESTEMENT MEMORIES Shallan is forced to confront what happened with Testament, and Radiant begins to see that she must help Shallan deal with her final truth. [Option 1] Shallan knows she killed a herald and that she sent her mother to damnation - possibly ending the world and starting the final desolation. [Option 2] Shallan does not know her mother was a herald, but will put that together in regards to the "hole" in her memory"

  19. I feel like Hoid put the memory of Toad attacking him into one of his coins as it was happening and then - "He tucked the coin into his belt with a quick gesture, keeping up the flourishes of his other hand as a distraction. Then he heard a pling as something slipped free of his belt. He stopped and found one of his fake coins on the ground, the ones that could be stuck together to appear as one. But just one half? That should have been safely tucked away in the little pocket hidden in his shirt." It wasn't where it should've been because he tucked the memory away in there - "What game do you play here? “A game of sense.” … What? “Sense, Odium. The only kind I have is nonsense. Well, and some cents …” He glanced down at the coin he still held in his hand, then cocked his head.." That's when Hoid started to remember

  20. I know that Kelsier fits a couple of symptoms of psychopathy, but there are other symptoms that define psychopathy like an inability to love, a lack of empathy, and no guilt for your actions. I recently finished my rereading of Mistborn Era 1, Eleventh Metal, and Secret History. I looked at the things I said in the main post, like love for his mother Marsh, her crew and especially Mare. If Kelsier were a psychopath, he would never have loved any of them, he would not have hated the nobility for taking his mother from him, he would not have suffered Mare's death, he would not have felt guilt for his actions, he would not have empathized with the Skaa or the Southerners, he would not have hurt the deaths of his friends or avenged himself on the nobles and the Lord Ruler. People use Kelsier's hatred towards the nobles as an argument to say that he is a psychopath, but nobody remembers that this hatred is thanks to the death of his mother and years later Mare, it is exactly the same as Kaladin's hatred towards the lighteyes for the deaths of Tien and the others whom he could not protect, only that Kelsier constantly took revenge. What I'm going to is that in Cosmere, there are other characters who are closer to being psychopaths than Kelsier, for example Dalinar until his visit to the valley (those were not just "war crimes" as you say, it was a constant genocide by decades, with which Dalinar ALWAYS enjoyed the bloodbath and never felt remorse for it all until he killed Evi. Dalinar carries more murders on his back than any other main character in Cosmere, and by far), Moash after switching to side of Odium; Nale, and probably Sadeas and Straff Venture. Really, I think Kelsier is not a good person but he is trying to be, he is probably a narcissist but NOT a psychopath, based on the fact that Kelsier can love, feels pain and sadness, loves his friends, took revenge on the nobles and the Lord Ruler For taking away his mother and Mare (whom he really loved, and also his mother), he feels guilty for his actions and has empathy with people.

  23. Thanks for the summon! Just to note: “like the psychopathy-adjacent ability to detach from others’ pain enough to perform surgery” Not “like.” Many law-abiding psychopaths are excellent, high risk surgeons for EXACTLY that reason. In fact, it’s one of the more likely places to find a neurological psychopath. A neurological psychopath is not the same thing as a criminal one. Kelsier actually does pass the American PCL-R, meaning he would not be diagnosed as a psychopath. (The European cut off is lower and he’s right on the verge there.) Nor does he have ASPD. I would diagnose him as a clinical Narcissist though, although he’s not nearly as severe as some. He just happens to fit all the diagnostic criteria, lol! I love Kell. He’s a great person and a fascinating person. But he’s not a good one, not naturally. He wants to be though and I think he is - slowly - working on becoming one. Claiming he’s evil because he’s a psychopath is like claiming Steris is a ‘cold fish’ because she has Aspergers. Kelsier was born the way he is. Brandon has stated that it’s a difference in neurology, not a sociological development. He literally cannot change what he is - nor should he. Nothing stops a psychopath from being a decent person except their own choices. And they can always choose. There’s an ancient Jewish philosophical teaching that, interestingly, talks about exactly this. It discusses how nearly every attribute (with the exception of pride) can be utilized for good. The Rabbis describe a man who is born with a desire for blood shed. Such a man, they say, can become one of three things: a murderer, and animal slaughterer, or a Sandek. A murderer takes the desire for blood and turns it into a means of harming others. An animal slaughterer turns it into a career and a means of providing an important service to his community. A Sandek elevates the same desire for blood into the spiritual by performing circumcision and bringing the next generation into the community. (Please don’t debate the ethics of circumcision; the point is the Rabbis saw this as an important spiritual act.) So here we have something we instinctively see as bad: the desire to kill. And yet that desire can be turned into something beautiful and holy. And this is reflected in the real world. Some psychopaths becoming cruel criminals, genuinely evil men. Some become soldiers or cut throat business men, turning that same trait into a career. And some become surgeons, saving countless lives. Psychopathy is just a trait and can be used for good or ill. It’s up to the individual to channel it for good. And Kelsier, per Brandon, does try to channel himself at what he perceives as good causes. He doesn’t always succeed, but the fact that he’s trying is what’s important. It’s not how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up. He wants to be good and - as this is Kelsier - he’s not about to stop just because it’s hard. Rusts, that’s probably half the reason he’s trying! Here’s a sketch of our favorite Fullborn psychopath to finish this post. First card of the Minor Arcana, let’s give it up for our Mistborn of Spears!

"This was a beautiful piece of (art, writing, etc.)" "You made me feel [this emotion]" "Thank you!" "You put a lot of effort into this." "I'm bored and decided to give rep to random people." "I feel obligated to upvote this." "This has a lot of upvotes, so I might as well do it too." "You have very few upvotes and so I'm giving you sympathy rep." "Somebody told me to rep you."

  25. Welcome to Shardhunt! If you like puzzles, crosswords, escape rooms, mysteries, consider yourself a Sanderson Scholar, are good at either logical or lateral thinking, or just want to have some fun with a team of people, consider signing up! So, what is a puzzlehunt? In a typical puzzle, you receive some information and have to extract an answer out of it, which is almost always an English word or phrase. Puzzles can come in many different forms; the only real commonality is that you usually receive no direct instructions, so it’s up to you to figure out how to make sense of the information you’re given. For example, information can be hidden in crosswords, images, videos, or logic puzzles. To cap off the hunt, the final puzzle will be a *metapuzzle*, meaning it will also use the answers from the previous puzzles. If you remember the Sanderson Puzzlehunt from times long past, this is the spiritual successor of that (only with more writers!) Format/Rules - Hunt submissions will be open from Saturday, 20 February 2021 at 13:00 EST until midnight Saturday, 27 February 23:59 EST. - The hunt consists of 1 round of 12 puzzles (including a metapuzzle). - Teams can have up to 6 members. - The hunt will be held on our Discord server, where every team will have a channel for coordination and answer checking. - Teams are ranked first based on metapuzzle solve time, second by number of puzzles solved. - Each puzzle is worth 1 point. - The answer checker will automatically uppercase submissions and strip all characters except A-Z before checking for correctness. - There is no limit on guesses, but please don't dictionary attack the hunt bot. - Teams can use any source of information to solve puzzles, including the internet and other people, so long as they are not otherwise involved in the hunt. - All spoilery hunt communication (puzzle clarification, answers, hints, errata) should be communicated in the teams discord channel. - If you feel stuck on a puzzle or just aren’t having fun with it, feel free to ask for a hint! Our organisation team will be around during most hours of the day to nudge you in the right direction. - Puzzles will be unlocked in batches every few hours on the first day. Signups - To sign up a team, reply to this thread with your team name, names of your team members, and a Discord contact. - Alternatively, send us a pm on the forums or our Discord contact with the same info [Moonrise#3554][ExaltedDM#5212][Terminal#7208] - If you don’t have a team yet, don’t worry! Just let us know, and we will try to match you into a team that’s looking for members. FAQ Q: I've never solved puzzles like these! What should I expect? A: Some good puzzlehunt examples are Colby’s Curious Cookoff, DP Hunt, and Puzzle Potluck 3, about in order of difficulty. Q: How available do I need to be? A: The primary goal here is to have fun, so you can participate as much or as little as you want! Q: How difficult are the puzzles? A: The hunt is very much intended to be on the beginner side with a focus on the 17th Shard community. Q: Are the puzzles Cosmere themed? How much Cosmere knowledge do I need to have? A: Some puzzles have references to Sanderson's books. Being familiar with them will be helpful, but not strictly necessary. No puzzle includes spoilers for the most recent Cosmere books (Rhythm of War, Dawnshard). Q: Are there any prizes? A: Only the joy of solving puzzles and bragging rights. Q: I have another question that is not here! A: Ask away in the thread! However any spoilery puzzle related concerns should be raised in your team’s Discord channel. Q: Who made this amazing thing? A: This hunt is written by @MetaTerminal, @Exalted Dungeon Master, @Moonrise, @Rushu42, and @MiToRo94, and playtested by all of the above plus @Babilarian Darkeyes and @Mistcloaked Mountains. The format of this hunt was inspired by Smogon Puzzle Hunt but with a significantly smaller scope and difficulty. Our goal is to introduce puzzlehunts to the Shard community and get some writing practice ourselves. If you’re interested in participating, join the Discord server here! https://discord.gg/rHsr9JxhbY

  26. All right, so I just finished RoW and I'm still sort of digesting everything, but something I wanted to express right away was how good the characters are in this book. Sanderson is often good with characters, and he himself has said that it should practically always be the most important element of a story, so it wasn't really a big surprise. But I just found myself so supremely pleased with the character arcs in RoW, especially in comparison to OB (in which Dalinar was the only real highlight for me) that I had to say something about the following people: Navani/Raboniel - I did not expect so much of Navani in this book (I'm sure I'm not alone there), by my goodness, did I love her chapters and her characterization. And the character of Raboniel was just so excellent, so utterly fascinating - I'm not sure I've ever seen an antagonist like her before, and the fact that she made such an impression on me despite only appearing in this book is quite something. The scenes with Navani and Raboniel were some of the most transfixing character work I've ever seen from Sanderson - their tense cooperation, their subterfuge, Navani's feverish scientific discoveries, their singing of the tones of Roshar, the murder of Raboniel's daughter - it was all just so good, probably the best part of the entire book for me. And when Navani bonds the Sibling and sends Moash fleeing in a beam of light, that was honestly one of the coolest Stormlight moments I've seen - rivaling Bridge Four's rescue of Dalinar in WoK, or Dalinar's showdown with Odium in OB. And the Navani/Raboniel relationship was made even better because of its profound implications for the Stormlight series - the discovery of anti-Light, humans hearing the tones of Roshar, the coexistence of humans and singers. The only thing that could have improved it, I think, would be if Navani had some connection to music or singing prior to this book. Shallan - I'm not sure if I really like Shallan as a character, but I'm fascinated by her, which is probably better anyways. I think she's very well-crafted, very well-written - the way that Sanderson blends such dark, personal undertones beneath her seemingly cliché, perky exterior just draws you in, makes you confused by her and annoyed by her, but also transfixed at the same time - I always find myself looking forward to her chapters the most. Her character arc in this book was good, I thought, really good, much better than it was in OB, and the split personalities finally made sense (up till now they've really bothered me). The thing about Shallan is that she kind of defies description, which is all the more amazing considering how stereotypical she seems at times - the bubbly girl, the quirky girl, who despite often being basically an archetype of any number of female characters in Sanderson, and despite lacking any of the calculated intrigue and the coldness of Jasnah, is somehow even more elusive and more fascinating. Taravangian - I am really delighted by this one - as early as WoK, I've been fascinated by Taravangian and have gobbled every morsel we've been given of him. He's such a good character - so complex and interesting, and so deserving of the attention he'll surely be given from this point on. I was quite disappointed early in the book when Taravangian had basically given up, resigning himself to saving Kharbranth and facing execution, so you can imagine my excitement with what happened later. I also think this is a really brilliant move to make from a storytelling perspective since Odium is a good villain, yes, but I've often found Rayse to be lacking, and it was one of the main reasons I was slightly disappointed by OB. But Taravangian in that role? There's no one better I can think of, and having a really good villain usually translates into having a really good story. Plus it's so exciting to think of the implications of this development further on - the excellent contrast of Dalinar and Taravangian, the collision course the two of them are on, and its ramifications for the cosmere. Venli - I was very shocked by Sanderson's decision to kill Eshonai and have Venli take her place, and that shock has kind of carried on throughout OB and most of RoW, as I constantly asked, "Why? Why did he make this choice?" I have fantasies of writing books someday and doing random things - just randomly killing a character, because not every death and action has to have a reason - random things happen in everyday life all the time. But I wouldn't expect such random, shock-value deaths from Sanderson, which is what the death of Eshonai felt like to me, and I was astonished at his boldness for going through with it. But RoW justifies the decision so perfectly, and sets up such a satisfying character arc for Venli - I love how she's detached from both humans and singers, how she has such complicated strengths which are just as easily weaknesses, and how she, in the end, was the right person for Timbre to bond. You'll notice most of my opinions here are just sort of vague and adulatory - I'm sort of in a honeymoon phase right now where I'm just so pleased with RoW, and so pleased that it was better than OB, that all I can say is, "That part was so cool! Oh, and that part was so cool!" Hahaha. Despite my excitement, however, I've purposefully excluded [Support] from the title, because it's totally all right for people to disagree with me and express their opinions - I promise you won't hurt my feelings. I'd love to hear what characters you were satisfied with in RoW, and which you ones you weren't satisfied with, and whether you agree with my assessment of the characters I've listed here!

  28. Yeah, that’s what I meant by law abiding. I just couldn’t come up with a better term. Thanks for finding it! And basically everything you said is why I love Kell. Especially since Brandon canonized that he really was trying to do right by the Skaa as part of his motivations which, as you noted, is a huge deal for a psychopath. And yeah, Taravangian is terrifying to me because he’s NOT a psychopath. He genuinely cares about every person he has slowly murdered. And he does it anyway. THAT is true evil. And that’s why I think he’s the best villain Brandon has ever created.

  29. @Kyn I mostly agree with you, with one exception: “Kelsier took that anger, that bitterness and shame, and channeled it. He’d found purpose again during his days in prison. He wouldn’t lose it now.” This is not a psychopathic trait. It’s actually a trait common to people with the Survivor’s mentality. That ability helped a lot of Survivors keep going after the Holocaust, choosing to turn their pain into constructive ends. And I was trained to think that way all my life by parents who were children of those Survivors. For a gentler variant: When my older daughter was seemingly dying in trauma at two months old, I turned to my Dad and told him, “we will make something good of this.” And he immediately understood what I meant. We’re survivors. Children and grandchildren of people who survived the greatest horror this world has known. Descendants of a people who have been repeatedly massacred. My very existence is my grandparents revenge. So, to me, Kelsier’s reaction is the only reasonable one. Of course you turn grief and pain into purpose - if my grandparents hadn’t, where would I be? The fact that he’s a psychopath probably helped him develop that particular cognitive trick, but it’s actually a trait common to many Survivors - not just the man given that title. TLDR; Kelsier has many psychopathic traits, but that actually isn’t one of them. That’s just a natural result of him being a survivor, and you’ll find it among many people who have gone through hell.

  30. Agreed. Rather than "manipulate" or "corrupt", the effect might be better described as "amplify". I found this in RoW ch. 31 (Raboniel, to Venli): Certainly, support for the idea that the characters see Voidlight as capable of increasing the emotions of those infused with it.

  31. Okay, so I reread C1 (thanks for only 4.5 pages to go through ), and it... just made me more suspicious of everyone. But anyway, I just have everyone listed in the order they entered the thread and with the number of their posts (roughly because I kept getting distracted) in parentheses after their name. Idk if that would help anyone else, but I figured I'd leave those in. Matrim, Quinn, and Illwei were the most active out of everyone by faaar. Matrim (24): Very active. Gut read Quinn as elim and didn’t like everyone focusing in on Bard missing Archer’s post. Harped a lot on TUO for disagreeing with Dannex about the possibility of a single doc in the hospital doc. Matrim seemed village to me early on, but their later posts seemed a lot more defensive. Mild Elim. Quintessential (20): Vote hopped a lot, but didn’t do a lot of analysis, especially for the number of posts. Null-Mild Elim. Illwei (24): Some good analysis/speculation. Thought (probably correctly) Dannex/TUO were overestimating roles. Didn’t like Matrim’s vote on TUO and thought they were elimmy. A lot of vote-switching. Null. Archer (3): Dead, presumably the elim kill/villager. Only voted Orlok early on as a poke/joke vote. Mostly did analysis and mentioned their PM buddy as vanilla. Could have died for something in PMs, but possibly just because they were somewhat active but not likely to get voted off, which is more likely IMO. Ashbringer (4): Some RP, said they're busy in blue text, and did a little analysis of the me vs. TUO voting, but didn't vote. Could be a way to avoid having a voting record, but not really much to go on. Null. Dannex (9): Guessed at role distribution/definitely overestimated some, like most of us. Voted on Bard early on because they missed the Archer post, but didn't really say much after that. Null. Gears (1): Did one very long role analysis/ship part analysis/summary of the previous posts. Not a fan of the large amount of discussion centered around what would be most beneficial to sabotage, because that seems most helpful for the elims, but I'm also not sure an elim would post that in thread. Null-Mild Elim. Young Bard (4): Missed Archer's post and poke voted, but switched to Random Bystander when Quinn reminded them. Read Matrim as village and voted on TUO. Null-Mild Village. Bright Eyes (3): Laid pretty low, mostly RPing and didn't say a lot about what was happening. They asked for a vote count at the end but didn't vote. Null. TJ Shade (4): Emphasized that they thought fewer roles. Provided some semi-detailed reads on a couple different people. Mild Village. Random Bystander (3): Laid very low, one RP post and a couple other posts with not much substance. Null-Mild Elim. The Unknown Order (12): Dead/Village. Voted Matrim mostly due to gut and voted me for self-preservation, but didn't really mention any other suspicions. Kingsway (3): Laid very low, but was paying enough attention to mention that Reading hadn't posted in response to Illwei's vote. Null-Mild Elim. Shard of Reading (1): Didn't jump on until the every end, didn't really post much, and didn't vote. Null. Orlok (0): Nothing to go on, may get switched out by the inactivity filter. Null. Also, I'm totally down to use crewmates/imposters instead of vill/elim this round, because this is very Among-Us-y. That took way longer than it should have and now my brain hurts. This is for you, my fellow Thirds! I honestly don't have strong reads of anyone, with Matrim as my top sus and then the people who were laying low (Kingsway, Random Bystander, maybe Shard of Reading). I humbly invite pushback against this cuz I'm well aware that I know nothing.

  35. Mistborn Tarot: Ironeyes This card is known as Ironeyes or Death on Scadrial. We would call this card Justice. Prior to the fall of the Final Empire this card was often called The Inquisitor. Ironeyes would later come to be associated with it. Upright the card represents Justice, Truth and Law. Reversed it represents Unfairness and Dishonesty. The allomantic symbol on this card is Aluminum, which removes metals. It can symbolize the removal of biases when judging others, or the purification of the spirit that comes from receiving justice. Ironeyes can pair with The Survivor when playing Tarot for additional points. This trump pair is referred to as ‘The Brothers.’ The Brothers can be called at any point during a round for additional points, so long as at least one of the Brothers is in the taker’s hand. When performing reading the presence of the Brothers may indicate familial relationships, particularly those between siblings. This is the last of the original 12 cards I completed four years ago.

  38. I agree and understand most of this, but I do want to contest one thing - Nale's perceptions of "good" and "evil". He has sworn the fifth Ideal of the Skybreakers: "I am the law". IMO, he believes some things are "right" and others "wrong", not necessarily evil. I think he believes that while he is incapable of discerning good from evil, he believes that there is some greater power which can. Or, even better: He asks the Nightwatcher to be able to destroy evil, gets Nightblood, and then realizes that human perception is flawed and none are without guilt. This could in turn lead to his cynical attitude of "uphold the laws because it's all we can do".

  39. Thank you! The Marewill = GB logo idea isn’t mine, but I’ve adopted the headcannon. The flower was the unofficial symbol of the Crew, so Kelsier continuing to operate under Mare’s flower just feels right to me. The completed picture is in fan works, if you’d like to see it.

  41. I just noticed an old cameo easter egg that I haven't seen mentioned before. Some people know that a playwright named B. Sablerfils from the Mistborn Era 2 broadsheets is a cameo for Brandon, as "Sablerfils" is a sort of stretched French translation of "Sanderson" (sable = sand, fils = son). Peter confirmed on Reddit that Sablerfils was added by Isaac as a joke. However, I noticed something else about this cameo today. In The House Record broadsheet in Shadows of Self, there is an ad for an operetta named "A Hero for All Ages" by Sablerfils and a coauthor named Buissonommes. Using the same stretched French translation with buisson = bush and homme = man, you can get to Bushman. I didn't think much of this at first, but then I noticed in the WoR acknowledgements that "Bushman" is Emily Sanderson's maiden name and Brandon's father-in-law Matt Bushman is a musician that has advised Brandon on lyrics and poetry. So I think Isaac snuck a cameo in there for one or both of them as well!

  45. I disagree. I think you're spot on for the 'common' or 'lesser spren,' those without sapience. But we also know that Radiant spren have a personhood in addition to their raw investiture and that any sufficiently-large body of investiture will gain cognizance. So while the investiture itself may well have been annihilated, I think it unlikely that the 'soul' or personhood of Phendorana was similarly wiped out. It's a difficult set of distinctions to draw, but a big theme so far in Stormlight has been the agency and personhood of the Spren (particularly the Radiant Spren) and it seems out of theme for them to revert to 'lesser beings' upon death than humans.
