  1. I know this has been discussed before, but I had some fun doing a goofy data viz project poking fun at the number of times characters "raise an eyebrow" at each other in the original trilogy. After collecting some basic eyebrow interaction data, I made some plots analyzing: The most frequent eyebrow Raisers vs Raisees Changes in eyebrow raising frequency over time The social network among characters as defined by their eyebrow exchanges I wrote up some analysis claiming that characters' eyebrow behaviors mark key moments of personal growth in their character arcs and dumped a set of interactive visualizations for all 3 books here. I thought this forum might get a kick out of it Here are some viz previews: (Nodes are sized proportionally to the total number of eyebrow interactions in which that character was involved; Arrows are sized proportionally to the number of directed eyebrow raises from the source to the target)

  2. Week #4 Poem #4 Battleground of Remembrance Vibrant tongues leap into the air and grab at the heights of the cosmos with a grip that will yield to none. Dirtied light paints the walls of a city at the edge of a vast forest under siege by divinities born of wrath. Sundered earth scorched by insatiable hands bears witness to once mighty splintered chains that held back those who sneer at the work of mortal hands. All that might once have flourished in this realm has been utterly consumed. A silent anathema ruddy in the blood of slain enemies gazes upon that which they would demand as tribute from those who still live. Onyx clouds hang over all as though they are hooded demons born to drag all into desolation everlasting. Atop the cracked towers of this last mortal bastion, warriors drained of nearly all vitality hold trembling weapons in hand. Eyes that tear flesh and drain humanity until all that remains is a wasteland unfit for even the damned twinkle with a twisted joy. If not for the screams of those who are lost and the chorus that is the prelude dirges there would be impenetrable silence. Only a being neither warrior, nor infernal king, nor even monster could bear the stain of the slaughter to some. Humid stillness combines with the flames that have begun to destroy from within this last defense of mortals to create the summoning that call cautious carrion from where they hide. Sounds that shake with wild abandon the ground to the very depths rips away all warmth from the blood of those who hear its bestial growls. These noises call back the dead so that they may for a second time know the embrace of life’s final labored breath. Rulership is meaningless when deities turn on each other shredding supposedly immortal flesh and setting loose horrors ever worse. As though the eyes of the heavens carry the weight of sadness, torrential rain begins to fall at the moment when there are few who will remember the events of the moments to come. Cleansing blows strike fast reducing the growls to whimpers that are lost to the drums of the sky. Those who have risen are chased back to their slumber and those who called them are cast violently aside and broken before primordial warriors who attack from above with brilliant spears. Vanished are those who consume memory. Those who were forgotten rule once more.

  3. Survivors of the initial onslaught slowly banned together around an abandoned mess hall. The troops were exhausted, and eyed each other with weary looks. The mess hall still had some supplies, and more importantly, it had maps to other more defensible positions. However, the troops knew that there must be Forgotten among them. The camp was going to descend into chaos, but a semblance of order was established. It was decided that a Court Martial be held, with the express purpose of finding any Forgotten. Unfortunately, the survivors were from different platoons, so uncovering a Forgotten among them would be difficult. With tempers running high though, it would only be a matter of time before someone fell to the mob. This Day turn will end at 8 PM CST on Saturday, January 30th. The Court Martial has no vote minimum, and ties will be decided randomly. As a reminder, you can use your action during the Day to take one of the lovely items from the Camp Supply. Please be patient with me while I distribute your GM PMs. Camp Supply: Player List:

  7. Hey guys! It's me! Fadran! As a Brando Sando fando, it would go against my very nature to not create a connected universe for all my works of writing. Most of you folks have checked out my sort-of novel "The Iconar Collective," and so it might be cool for you to know that these short stories take place in the same universe! The Beorin Collective is another series of planets and stuff in the Omniverse, and while at first I had no clue what to do with it, after designing a magic system and some other fun stuff, I decided that it'd be fun to make literally EVERY short story I write from here on out take place in it. This decision was a recent one, so I only have one work to share with you guys. It's called "The Shadowcaster," and I submitted it to Scholastic Art and Writing and got myself an entire scudding participation award. The word limit was 3000, so if the plot seems kinda tight, then... well, now you know why! Here it is. I personally don't like it very much, but it's jam-packed with lore: @Chasmgoat @Vapor

  11. I like the parallels here, and I agree that there's a lot of similarity between these concepts. I wonder, though, at how sentient these forces really are. As @Leuthie said, it's possible that over time the Dor could gain a form of sentience. However, we have a WoB that states that it doesn't currently have that [emphasis added]: It also seems like the Dor isn't nearly as divided as your theory would imply. All descriptions of it seem to be talking about it as one entity, and we know that the two Shards are combined: Obviously, the magic manifests differently in different places, but I suspect that that's instead being shaped by the consciousness of the people there. I mean, the power is completely in the Cognitive Realm, so it seems reasonable that the way it works is driven by the ideas of that place. So in Fjorden, where it's very much driven by the Dominion aspect of things, it could have been a self-reinforcing cycle; some people there form a religion that leans towards Dominion, so the Intent of the Dor there shifts toward Dominion, which affects the practitioners of the magic so they're more inclined toward Dominion, and so forth.

  14. He’s already been a king... and been mistaken for TLR. There are a lot of fundamental differences between them though. For one thing, Kelsier is far more dangerous! But being more serious... No. Not beyond the superficial. Kelsier has no interest in ruling. It bores him. He ruled an entire continent, then gave it up when it no longer needed him. In fact, there are hints that he fundamentally disagrees with Saze on the level of involvement Harmony has in the Basin. Despite having two halves of the planet predominantly loyal to him, Kelsier has kept his manipulation to the shadows since he left the South. The people may worship him (at least in the North; TBD on the South), but he doesn’t appear to involve himself in those beliefs. Rashek kept himself on the throne. He wiped out all faiths that didn’t worship him. He actively involved himself in the religion and society. He kept the world from developing and he did so openly. In this his actions are opposed to Kelsier’s. Rashek was Cosmere aware and he spent 1000 years doing nothing with that knowledge. Kelsier, from the beginning, has sought to learn more. Rashek wanted stagnation; Kelsier wants progression. Rashek wanted to rule; Kelsier wants to KNOW. They both sought power, but the power Kelsier seeks is very different than Rashek’s. Where they DO align is likely in the belief that they are helping Scadrial. Kelsier may want Scadrial to become the Cosmere’s Portugal; Rashek wanted to protect them from Ruin. Kelsier has allies. Friends. And he isn’t afraid of being called out. He’s willing to acknowledge mistakes and weaknesses. I think a big difference between the two is illustrated when Kelsier is trying to set himself up as a spiritual figure and thinks “Let them see my weakness and let them see me overcome it” versus Rashek later on going, “I have not made a mistake. God does not make mistakes.” Kelsier’s core Ghostbloods are probably very similar to the Crew, based on the Shardcast episode with Brandon. It’s only as the group grows beyond him, beyond his ability to coral, that things change. Being stuck on Scadrial doesn’t help, and neither do Kelsier’s poor administrative skills. Rashek turned his friends into Kandra. His closest allies were the Inquisitors he could control. Kelsier intentionally created a group of individuals who do not have to do as they are told. He prizes that. He wants his people to take initiative. That’s NOTHING like how Rashek works. Kelsier also seems to have come around on the nobility. He seems perfectly fine with recruiting nobles these days. Rashek never really got over his pettiness. Rashek was a force of stability and stagnation. Kelsier is a force of change and innovation. Despite surface similarities, like Ruin and Preservation, they couldn’t be more opposed. (And yes, Kelsier is definitely Ruin in this comparison.)

  19. To those that have PMed me, I'll get to each of you tomorrow. I'm just here to deal with this. Oh hell no. You did not just advise using an electronic device/program for invoking The Gods of Luck and Chance! For such an affront, I'm going to have to go after your Shadowblaze now. Firstly, burning iced animal crackers can gain their favour. Whole crackers mind not the broken bits. You can eat those. This step is not necessary but it can help if you wish for their continued blessing. Secondly, one must use physical dice/coins/items to receive their answer. Saying "May the Gods of Luck and Chance smile upon me." as you roll/flip brings their attention to what you are after resulting in a more favourable outcome. Dice are the preferred vessel of their will but if you don't have the right denomination of dice, a deck of cards works well too. Just use as many cards as you have options and assign a name/task to each before shuffling and drawing the chosen one.

I'm also not going to be on here as much, because I was way more productive and read a lot more this past week than I have in quite a while. I'm going to try an check in only once a day. 21. My dearest hope is that he becomes Shallan's personal fashion designer as well as her husband and then badgers Kaladin into letting him dress Kaladin up fancy for a bunch of dates that Kaladin finds himself with because of a diabolical conspiracy involving Adolin, Hesina, about half of Bridge Four including Rlain and Renarin, and of course Syl. I am also praying that we get to see Adolin setting up the "perfect" first date for Rlain and Renarin, but if we don't get that, I know what I'll be doing for fanfic, lol.

  23. Last time Faleast was here, things didn't go so well. This time was supposed to be simpler. And yet... it was also much more complicated. Think about it, Faleast! A Shadowblaze! They're essentially a spren bond without the Stormlight, and we can get that already. We don't even have to play with the Investiture tricks to get it out of here! "Chalklings whenever we want does sound... promising. But there's also Forgotten here, and I'd really rather avoid messing with those after what... happened last time," You're just nervous that Lamentation's going to figure out that there's something even bigger than the Multiverse. "He probably already knows," Faleast said. "But the Gods Beyond are what made Him. I doubt His vision extends that far." Maybe. But you still didn't tell him. And why are you capitalizing his? His name, yeah, but Lamentation's just a guy like you. Sure, a guy who holds approximately one-eighth of the net power of one universe, but still. Faleast shuddered slightly. "So what's our plan?" I don't know. "... great. Thank you for the assist." Neither of us are acting in charge. In my opinion, that means that Lamentation doesn't really care what we do here. But getting a Shadowblaze makes doing... whatever it is we'll be doing much easier. "Well," Faleast said, tilting his head. "I don't exactly see any piles of Shadowblazes lying around. So do you have a plan to get one?" Sure, first we... oh, right. Step one no peeking no peeking no peeking no peeking, and wait for Alvron to no peeking no peeking no peeking no peeking. Then step two, no peeking no peeking no peeking be a LITTLE chaotic no peeking no peeking no peeking no peeking grab maps no peeking no peeking no peeking no peeking message people no peeking no peeking no peeking no peeking and try not to let no peeking do no peeking no peeking no peeking. Step four, we grab the Shadowblaze, run like Ishar's chasing us, and profit. "... what did you just do?" Faleast asked. White text. Fool's em every time. Especially this time. "But you can just highlight it and see what it says." That's why I encrypted it. So they won't be able to read it. "I don't think that's how encryption works, AraRaash." Well, either I'm right and that IS how encryption works, or the God Beyond controlling my thought process has no idea what he's talking about. And no, I'm not capitalizing that either. "In any case," Faleast huffed, "where's step three?" ??? "You have step one, step two, step four." Yeah. "What's step three?" ??? "AraRaash" I'm being serious. That's how you do it. Step One you do this, Step Two you do that, Step Three is ???, Step Four is Profit. Works every time. Faleast sighed and wandered into camp. This was definitely not one of Lamentation's priorities. TL;DR,am still going for the Shadowblaze.

  26. From an emotional standpoint I would like this to happen. But as much as bridge four represents honour and courage and loyalty, I don't think it's going to create a new spren. The only two spren like you suggest that we have seen are the Tower and Cusicesh, and I think Cusicesh may be one of the unmade.

  36. Based on the WOB above it does sound like Elsecallers will always use logicspren, but they actually aren't the most scholarly, and can have a wide variety of types of people. From https://www.brandonsanderson.com/the-ten-orders-of-knights-radiant/ "Elsecaller oaths are, like those of the Lightweavers or Skybreakers, themed toward the individual...Because of this, the Order is open to many different types, so long as they want to improve themselves...They seek self-improvement and personal betterment in their lives, but aren’t limited to one specific theme or set of Ideals. This makes them one of the most open and welcoming of orders, though they do tend to attract those who are less flamboyant. They have their share of scholars, and often a large number of theologians, but also attract those who are interested in leadership." Truthwatchers are generally regarded as the most scholarly: "The Truthwatchers are seen as quiet, largely known as the most scholarly Order of Knights Radiant. "

  37. Aluminum on Roshar is still very, very Rare, even with Soulcasters - this mean is probably dificoult to make. And on Scadrial weve seen literaly whole rail wagon full of aluminum. Its dozens of tons. Scadrial now can make aluminum faster and chaper than Roshar. And all they need to kill Radiant (of any order) is heavy machinegun with Aluminum ammo. They allready have those (ok, they have Gatlings, but in our world Maxim made his machinegun just 20 years later). Weve seen feruchemical ability (f-iron) charged into Ettmetal, so machine can operate it. Yyyyy...

  42. First, the Sibling and Oathgates are "land-locked" because the things they represent don't move. Urithiru and Oathgates are stationary objects so the spren representing them are stationary. Since we don't know exactly why the Dor results in location dependent magic systems, we can't say whether there's a relation or not. I suspect the Dor is reforming to represent the perceptions of the land it finds itself in, resulting in large nebulous spren-like entities. The Dor and Stormlight will probably become more alike over time. The Dor is free Investiture made up of the splintered remains of Devotion and Dominion in the Cognitive Realm of Sel. Over time it will gain/has gained sapience and will act more and more like spren. Stormlight is free Investiture on Roshar, part of a regular cycle of the High Storm. Due to the thin veil between Cognitive and Physical on Roshar, some of this Stormlight leaks into the Cognitive Realm and results in small, sapient and non-sapient Cognitive entities. Honor and Cultivation Invested into these spren in several ways. One of the spren created on Roshar was the result of the size and permanence of Urithiru. The spren of Urithiru was Invested by both Honor and Cultivation and gained sapience to become the Sibling (they may have had sapience prior to Honor and Cultivation, but they're Invested nonetheless). So The Sibling (and all other spren on Roshar) is what the Dor could be if there were an Intelligence and Will available to shape it, and a thinner veil into the Physical Realm to allow for a larger variety of things to attract it.. As it is now, the Dor just picks up on what's going on on Sel and shapes itself accordingly. In the case of Arelon, the Dor responds to the Intent of Aons and shapes that mimic the land. In the case of Fjorden, the Dor responds to sacrifice and pain, and Aons made through the twisting of souls and bone. These responses are reflections of the land and cultures found in these areas; the result of free Investiture defining itself by the Cognitive perceptions of millennia of beings living in those areas. Dor is just free Investiture. Over the several thousand years it's been on its own, it's changed. The area dependent magic systems suggest it isn't a single, monolithic piece of Investiture, but that there are several "large spren" tied to specific areas in Sel's Cognitive Realm.

  43. So, on the question of "Scadrial vs Roshar now that we know what Roshar looks like post RoW", obviously there's a lot missing because we don't know what Scadrial actually looks like in this point of time. Era 3 Scadrial is going to align with the SA, but that's almost a millennium in the future of where we are in Scadrial now. I believe that lining up Radiants and Allomancers is a question of versatility vs adaptability. We see in RoW that the Radiants are still very fledgling. The Fused are constantly referring to things the Radiants used to do that they don't know how anymore. Windrunners using "homing arrows" as an example. However, the Rosharans, especially Kaladin as the prime combat example, have shown to be *extremely* adaptable to new strategies. In Roshar, every time a new strategy is used, it can only be used once because there's going to be a counter next time. We see this in Kal vs. Lezian where he was taken off guard, but then by the end of the book beat the snot out of him (there were extra power boosts going on then but still). But while the magic system on Roshar is very complex and versatile, the power-arsenal any one Radiant has is relatively limited. Stormlight works as a constant F-Gold and A-Pewter boost, which is a really good baseline, but then the Radiant only has two to three other abilities AT BEST (the two surges, combining the two surges for a third effect) because most Radiants are very new and have not mastered their abilities yet. Contrast the Mistborn. We'll use Era 1 because that was when Scadrial had the most investiture running around (something about being on a Shardworld with a splintered Shard really amps up the power levels). Those Mistborn are highly trained as assassins and combatants. They have worked with their abilities a lot more, and know how to use them much better. That's a bigger advantage than many think. However they're not often challenged like the Radiants are by other powerful magic users, which caps them. So if we were to line up a war between Scadrial and Roshar, and ignoring all the investiture and Connection "realism" nonsense because that takes the fun out of it--how would a battle between a Radiant and a Mistborn go? If we assume a 4th ideal non-Kaladin-plot-armor Radiant with sewn-in spheres and a Mistborn with lots-but-not-unlimited metals... it all depends on adaptability vs versatility. The mistborn has 16 powers, one of which is an investiture leech and other is designed to boost the other 15. The Radiant has armor, a sprenblade, two maybe-three surges, and stormlight. The Mistborn has the edge on pure versatility. However, if we assume the Mistborn and Radiant aren't familiar with each-other's powers, lethal mistakes can quickly be made. A Mistborn attacking with daggers, not knowing about the armor and sprenblade, will be quickly disappointed and--without Atium--killed. A Radiant not realizing that those coins can shatter armor might be pinned down and overwhelmed, or not expecting a grapple because they don't have Kaladin-plot-awesomeness, might find their necks being snapped by A-pewter before having all their stormlight leeched out before they can regen. The main problem that makes this matchup difficult is that the Mistborn is a much more rogue-ish archetype versus the Radiant's raw combat prowess. A fair fight with against a Radiant with more than 10 brain cells will always end in the Mistborn either running, or dying. A fight filled with traps, trickery, surprise, and environmental restrictions (enclosed space, hostile weather, etc.) will quickly find the more limited Radiant overwhelmed and possibly killed. And the Mistborn is very likely to be able to pull off that situational-control just through raw experience with their own abilities. Mistborn, like the D&D rogue, have the greatest advantage when they can do or exploit something their opponent doesn't expect. Rosharans have no reason to not wear metal, therefore a non-Windrunner/Skybreaker Radiant might find themselves being thrown off balance by A-Iron or A-Steel in just the wrong moment, or worse being hoisted into the air just to fall. Over, and over again, until their stormlight is out. But, if the Radiant has some brain cells and manages to avoid being caught by surprise, the advantage can start to creep in their favor. The Radiant has more raw combat power, and the longer the fight goes, the more things the Mistborn pulls out of his bag of tricks, the more the Radiant begins to work out how the Mistborn works, it will get to the point where unless the Radiant runs out of stormlight, he'll have the trickster in full retreat. And that's without considering the surges. Adhesion to stop A-Iron or A-Steel by gluing them to the ground. Cohesion to keep up with a retreating Mistborn or to make the Radiant un-grapple-able. Gravitation can do a *lot* to jack up a flying Mistborn, and Illusion, Soulcasting, or Transportation can help a sufficiently trained Radiant beat the Mistborn in the "trickery and antics" game. So it comes down to "who adapts to the other's abilities faster" and "who slips up first". A Fullborn is another monster entirely. Feruchemy's abilities are objectively better than Allomancy's due to the fact that they're *even more versatile* with the main drawback being a need for sacrifice and prep time. But Allomancy negates that with Compounding. Compounded Gold makes the Fullborn equal-to or superior to Stormlight's regen abilities, especially if they're very familiar with it like Miles was. Compounded Steel + Compounded Pewter lets them cream almost any Radiant through sheer steamrolling, and Iron Feruchemy shenanigans lets them take to the air easier than any would expect. Combine with Allomancy's speed-bubbles, leeching, and duralumin, and he's a walking army. It wouldn't take a Radiant or even a Herald to stop a Fullborn. It would take a Rosharan Radiant army. But, with the advances in anti-investiture weaponry Navani had recently discovered, it would be a matter of weeks or a month or two before a new weapon rolled out that could completely cripple them. Even that would have to rely on the Fullborn getting way too cocky. Versatility vs. Adaptability is the key to everything.

  44. Ya... That isn't a good ship. That would not end well... Ships that will end well: Susebron + Siri Kaladin + Lyn Shallan + Adolin Vin + Elend Sazed + Tindwyl Wax + Steris Wayne + Marasi Ships that wouldn't end well: Shallan + Nan Balat Kaise + Daorn Vin + Reen You may ask, why won't these work? Because they are all siblings. That is why. Because siblings shouldn't be in relationships with one another.
