  9. Words of Radiance, ch. 45 [young Shallan is talking with a Thaylen trader who owns a special chicken] Rhythm of War, ch. 111 [Ishar talking to Szeth and Dalinar] The merchant's words came true! There's also a Szeth quote somewhere about how the words of the dying are sometimes prophetic in his homeland, but he doesn't seem to attribute it to a malignant influence lol. (And Szeth hasn't been to Shinovar in a while, and Moelach clearly drifted to eastern Roshar in his absence.)

  13. DIE NACHT DER APOKALYPSE The final night. The night to end all nights. Tenth imagined soaring with Kaikoa, gazing upon the dying throes of a doomed world. Roshar. Scadrial was crowded, this night. People who'd fled Roshar. Three of Eight, with one gone elsewhere. He thought briefly of the worldhopper who went by the name of Amber Vulture, and wished him well. Wished that he would strike fast, and true. Tenth had decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. "I'm always willing to give second and third chances," a goddess had said, on Sel. Lifetimes ago, and worlds away now. (A different life. He'd been a different man then. A callow boy, barely a man, run away from a monastery and deeply in love with life.) Lifetimes flickered behind his eyes and he wished they would go away. Worse than a Forger's Essence Mark. Past histories, lives remembered. He'd grown up on First of the Sun. He'd dedicated his life to Patji. "The Father is merciful," intoned Third of the Sky. "If you screw up, you will die swiftly." He'd walked away. Betrayed his calling. Worked for the Ghostbloods. And now they wanted Kaddar the Alethi, and Tenth couldn't puzzle out why at all. (A flicker and he was Kaddar, having the blood of a good man on his hands. He was Kaddar, backing down before a goddess's frustration and he drew in a long shaky breath as he realised how close to disaster his distrust had drawn them all.) Scadrial was packed with refugees but it was so quiet. As if the very night was holding its breath. As if the world knew that the Cosmere would be forever changed by what was happening this night. Had he known, leaving the Father, that his life would take the turns it had? When had it all happened? Tenth of the Dusk closed his eyes and breathed. And waited for the end of all things to come.

  14. Hmm... I don't remember any mention of 16 in tones or Rhythms, I did keep an eye out for that number. She mentioned 10, 12 & 3: Khriss does mention the no. 16 in the Ars Arcanum though, while talking about the 10 Essences "on Roshar there are considered to be ten elements; not the traditional four or sixteen, depending upon local tradition." (I wonder if the traditional 4 is the same as the classical 4 elements: air, water, earth, fire) I really like the idea of the pure tone of Endowment being able to draw out Breath from a person. Raboniel theorized that the Lights follow the Tones because they resemble the voice of the god Commanding it. But Navani ponders this: Which means Breath must also have Intent: Endowment. And Intent is fundamental to Investiture, even to the tones and Rhythms. Someone couldn't unknowingly hum a Pure Tone to manipulate Light, they must Intend to do so or use an instrument created by someone, in which case the person who made the instrument provides the necessary Intent (We see this in action with Navani expelling Voidlight from Urithiru). So I think it's more likely that with Endowment's Pure Tone one can manipulate their own Breath but not others, you can give, but not take (I'm using the word "take" to mean taking forcefully, so excluding the act of receiving from the giver).

  16. So I've seen a recent resurgance in Voidbinding intrest recently which lead me to read every WoB on it, go through every thread with that in the name, watch the shardcast and spend hours agonising over it. But Frustration I hear you say, what makes this different from any of the other theories, well, to answer that, I believe I not only can give you a rough aproximation of what voidbinding is, but how it works, and even in some cases, what it does. All spoiler tags are WoBs Voidbinging ususally comes from the Unmade this was one of my two clues at what Voidbinding was, and so I began searching The unmade and their effects we have seen are as follows Neargual - The Thrill, emotional bliss and physical might. Moeloch - Deathrattles, foresight Yelig-nar grants all ten surges Re-shephir midnight mother- creates imitations of things Ashertmarn - creates disire fro exsess. Saj-anat - corrupts spren What bugged me about this was why Yelig-nar gave surgebinding, We also have but have not seen Ba-Ado-Mishram Chemoarish Dai-Gonarthis One of the last two is responsible for Nan-Balat's life drain ability that he uses to make himself feel better in WoK I-2 These charts will be helpful https://coppermind.net/wiki/Surgebinding https://coppermind.net/wiki/Voidbinding my breakthrough came when I thought of how Odium describes the Shards of Roshar Honor and Cultivation are natural forces, they don't care, Odium does however. Surges are the fundemental forces of the Cosmere, so it stands to reason that Voids would be the fundementals of Life This also explains why Yelig-nar gives surges, because natural law is needed for life. Now the hard part came with separating the abilities of the unmade from the powers of Voidbinding, and I think I've done it With this lens I broke apart everything we know about them and searched for signs of life. For those who don't know something is considered alive if it can React to changes in it's enviroment Prosses energy Evolve Able to Reproduce Grow and develope Self regulate(temerature, ph etc) Now on to the Voidbinding chart a few things of note, It has commonly been stated that the Voids are the surges with the left side flipped 180 degrees. And While this is true of Gravitation Progression Illumination Transportation and Cohesion it is not true for all of them Division could be counted as flipped with artistic lisence making it look better, but I'm unsure The ones that don't fit are Adhesion Division(Maybe) Abrasion Transformation and Tension So I have(I think) eight of the ten Voids Desire, the ability to manipulate the wants of others Instinct ability to manipulate your own emotions 3. Learning, Note similarity to F-Zinc and copper. "Over time, slowly, she'd[Re-shephir] become increasingly intrigued by the things she had murdered." Oathbringer page 309 4. Foresight, only one confirmed 5. Memory, aids living things, note similarity to F-copper 6.Enlightenment, corruption, transforming one kind of investiture into another kind, prossesing it. "Did not the humans revere Transformation-the ability of all beings to become something new, someone better-as a core of their religion?" -Sja-Anat on Enlightening RoW page 287 7.Evolving other things, similar principles to Hemalurgic construction. 8. Life drain, hurting other things to heal oneself note similarity to Hemalurgy Of course there are other things, we haven't seen three Unmade and there are other things unexplained, Time Dialation at Kholinar palace, the Queens guard's unusual stillness, but I think this works in a way. Now on to the more mechanical ascpects of Voidbinding One should note that the Two VoidOrders inside the gem are not connected to Voids, I think this is because of BAM in some way I belive Voidbinding to be a End-Negative On page 671 of RoW it says that recording visions takes stormlight and effort from Glys, reminds me of Aethers tireing, which makes me wonder if something like this questioner was If, Voidbinding, like Dakor consumes the soul itself. Anyway what do you think? I've spent so long on this I'm starting to lose my mind and probably missed something.

  17. If you were coming up with Radiant ideals for your order, what would they be? Conversely, if you had to pick five (5) ideals that define your life currently, what would they be? I’ll go first..... RADIANT ORDER: Grill Tenders 1. “Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination” 2. Marinade before grilling 3. Sear before lowering heat 4. Let rest before cutting/serving 5. I will stand firm against ketchup ***Bonus: I will never lick a steak knife!!! CURRENT IDEALS: 1. Treat others as you want to be treated...unless you are into self harm. 2. Mind your own business and keep your hands to yourself. 3. There is no ‘my truth’ or ‘your truth’...there is only THE truth. 4. Life sucks sometimes...get a helmet and carry on. 5. The only failure is quitting...either I will find a way or I will make one ***Bonus: Don’t take life too seriously...no one’s getting out alive. edit: Note to self, writing ***Bonus[*][*][*] without the brackets is reported as trying to ‘skirt the rules’. No attempted rule skirting here. Just a few bonus stars.

  18. I write these words in post, for anything not set in forum can not be easily referred to later. That aside, I wish to posit the theoretical existence of a surgebinding enhancement fabrial, the reverser to the suppressor's conjoiner. I assume that gem type matters for this kind of fabrial, based on both the portable device and the one in Urithiru being clusters of garnets and as such I assume that this fabrial would use a cluster of sapphires, the "inverse" polestone to garnet, just as ruby and amethyst are across from eachother on the surgebinding chart. Edit: I wrote this up in about 15 minutes, so it's possible that it comes across as less coherent than it is in my head.

  20. Todium seems to be still bound by that promise and those terms, right? ("it seems my precesessor's agreements will allow me to...") More interesting to me is "*said failures have killed gods before.*" We know of four dead gods (Honor, Devotion, Dominion, Ambition). Wit (and Brandon) don't use words lightly. One of those four was killed because they moved against another shard. Of those four deaths, Ambition seems most likely, especially given the RoW reveal that Mercy was there ("where Ambition, Mercy, and Odium clashed—and Ambition was destroyed.") that has us all reeling. I view Wit's comment as support for the theory that Ambition moved against Mercy and that breach of protocol allowed Odium to destroy her.

  22. I guess a Y. Random ramblings, because I am bored and twitchy and tense and tired: The night falls and everyone screams as the end approaches and teeth snap shut but do not taste the prize at the end of the tunnel that tightens its grip and screams as the wings fall and fly and plummet to the age of life and dust and benetaresioneicanviaere. Absolute absolution absolves absolutely and all ends well that falls apart somewhere in the middle and they hear but do not listen, look but do not see, talk but do not speak, and all crumbles to dust. Era born again light falls kingdom tears itself apart. And so it continues.

  25. This is hopeless. After this thread, I would claim @Frustration Shard. METAL ISNT POWER SOURCE! Is just the chanel for Power. Like pipe with water in home. Did pipe is source of water? NO! Vin and Elend used Mists AFTER they already burned their reserves out. Vin in fight against Inquisitors, Elend in final confrontation. Elend clearly told us that. Trell not Invested in Scadrial enough yet. He just hacks exsisting systems. For Allomancer you need Preservation Tone, for Feruchemist Harmony Tone, and for spiked/Hemalurgist Ruin Tone. Respective combination against respective combination.

  29. Kelsier could certainly be working against Harmony. Harmony by his own words is caught between the intents of the shards. If Kelsier is taking drastic action which is believable then Harmony could be opposed to that. Or maybe they just have different ideas of what is right, more of a tangential opposition than head on. And I don't think Kelsier is Trell. Its just a feeling but why would Kelsier want to hide the Cosmere from Harmony? More likely its another shard trying to prevent someone with the power of two shards from interfering on their world. So, no, I think the Set is separate from the Ghostbloods. More likely they are a rival organization like the Sons of Honor.

  31. Cycle - 8: Bright Red Brick “Brick… Brick…Brick…Brick.” The assembled cast their votes forcefully. Oh man, Brick thought, which considering he was a Red Ajah, was a serious curse. “I get a last meal, right?” Without waiting for a reply, he grabbed the closest thing he could, a chair, and chomped down on it. Too big, too big, he thought frantically, eyes darting around the room for something smaller to consume. He spotted a man’s hat and grasped at it. “Euhck ifs thes leaber?” The hulking man spit it out, disgusted. “That’s not even tanned properly. Does anyone have something small and hard? Hey is that diamond?” He had the wedding ring in his mouth before its unfortunate owner had a chance to protest. “Now thes ibs a challenge!” He started grinding it in his teeth, relishing the metallic taste. I could finish this in thirty thousand bites or less. He took a deep breath. Shame there isn’t time. With that, Brick swallowed, forcing the ring down his throat. The convulsions started immediately, but he stayed on his feet as he choked, looking each of his accusers in the eyes. “Goobf luck,” he gagged, before falling facedown on the ground, dead. Archer has been eliminated. They were Rebel Aes Sedai of the order Red Ajah. Devotary of Spontaneity has been killed. They were Rebel Aes Sedai of the order Grey Ajah. Vote Count: Archer (4): Matrim's Dice, James Brafin, Devotary of Spontaneity, Condensation Condensation (3): Gears, Breaker, Archer Death RP by Archer! Go upvote them! Cycle 8 has begun and will end on January 22, at 23:30 IST [GMT + 05:30]. Please try to bold your votes, and give retractions in green. Player List:

  33. Its very posssible, even plausible, than Odiums magic is End-Negative. Hatred is basicly destrucrive, not constructive. Need to note that indeed, known Unmade require sacrifice. - Yelig-Nar consumes his host - Moelach gives glimpses of future while person is dying - Nergaoul gives passion to fight until death - Ashertmarn gives passion to feast until death - Re-Sephir simply murders people to study them Only Sia-Anat doesnt kill anyone, but this is now, she changes spren, maybe earlier she simply hurt them more directly, so this is also some sacrifice. Also Fused share similarities to hemalurgy. Spiked poeple uses exactlythe same powers as born Allomancers and Feruchemists. But They are not using Allomancy/Feruchemy but Hemalurgy. And first they need kill someone with spike to gain powers. Similary Fused - they use normal surges, but to gain them (and physical body), they need sacrifice Singer. So Fused ar Voidbinders not because they use some other Voidsurges, but because they are using Voidbinding to be back.

  34. One response to this is @Alvron's, which I'd say is worth reading because he used to get some flak for being a quiet watcher. Another comment I'd credit to @Araris Valerian is that a number of us have moved away from our previous playstyles before. We usually comment in sign-ups or pre-game, to give people an idea of our activity level or how we intend to play. It's an imperfect system - players do still get suspicion for it, as far as I can see, but historically-speaking, we've fought hard for players to have the right to play the game with their own playstyle, or at least to be able to shift their playstyle to something they prefer without getting immediately killed for it. And players should get the benefit of the doubt - I'd hate to get ganked myself just because people wonder why I suddenly do more PMing and stop screaming at people who send PMs to me, or just because I've stopped being as aggressive and obsessively-focused as I used to be. Everyone wants to change or try something new at some point and people should get to do that. (To a point: there's a very interesting comment from @little wilson in a LG12 debate here which discusses what happens when one particular chaotic player had a history of turning on his own faction. There's a third incident that's not mentioned in that comment, I believe. Note that blue text used to be used for OOC rather than RL stuff so the mountains of blue there are just sticklers not RPing. I don't fully agree with past!Wilson, but I do want to highlight that this issue keeps cropping up again and again, about permissiveness for playstyles.) It also gives an opportunity to discuss and deconflict certain aspects of what you're doing that you think might be controversial before a game. Deconflicting is always good. I personally feel the analysis pressure often, and to some extent, you kind of have to do some: it's a social deduction game at heart. But @Burnt Spaghetti has infamously played by rolling dice or using a player as her spotter before. It's just how she rolls. I've RNGesused for players I vote on as well on occasion. I used to, in my early days, be very negative on gut. And I really think I was way too harsh - gut isn't necessarily inferior. Some players have very good gut reads. (IIRC Joe was one of them.) But the issue in the game is you have to remember you're playing with a community, which always brings a pro-social dimension - in other words, if there's selection pressure against gut reads, it's because other players generally want you to help them read you. And gut reads makes that job harder. Ultimately as Alv said, I think that's partly a matter of balance. Don't feel obligated to play a certain way just because players are on you for it. Play it your way. But also remember you are playing in a community, and be mindful of that in your interactions. As a player who doesn't often play, I don't know how bad it is for players who can't go in thread with not being serious. I haven't experienced problems on that front, but...I don't play often, and it's an established part of my playstyle that I have a troll/banter/mischievous side. Then again, most of the players in recent games haven't played with me, so I don't know either if this tolerance for sudden unseriousness is baked into our meta, or if they're just giving me the benefit of the doubt because they've never played with me before. Backstabbing talk...needs more room that this post can give. I'll come to it some other time, but I wanted to address the immediate playstyle talk first.

  36. During the occupation of Urithiru, Lift can use Progression, but not Abrasion. That's got to mean something. Just because an in-world character says or believes something does not make it true. One of the constant themes in ALL the Cosmere novels is the way knowledge becomes history, then myth, then legend, and sometimes eventually, religious dogma. Like the old "telephone" game, things get lost, garbled, and mistranslated over the years. I think the whole "true surges" thing is a modern misunderstanding. Part of it has to do with what Roshar was before the Shattering: spren existed, the Highstorm existed, the Singers existed. The moons and the other planets existed. The three realms existed. All of that was "true" somehow. Part of it is due to the fact that Honor and Cultivation were Invested in Roshar for thousands of years before Odium and Humans came, so what they did gradually became "true". We don't understand LOTS of important things about all that history, and neither did the Heralds or the Fused. Everybody is operating with a version of "true" that makes sense based on what they know... but nobody knows everything, so everybody is partly wrong. Some of them have believed "wrong truths" for literally thousands of years (~looks sideways at the Stormfather~).

OK, I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense." I probably shouldn't have been as surprised as I was by the amazing diversity of responses... it just goes to show what a stunningly incredible job Brandon has done in creating characters who feel "real" to so many of us, and in so many different ways. People are complicated, and one person's "enjoy the most" is another person's "punch in the face". Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same things? Thank you all so much for helping me feel like part of the Shard!

  44. What if Honor and Cultivation had ten children, but nine were "unmade" by Odium (becoming the nine Unmade) and only the Sibling survived? This would be consistent with what Sja-Anat says about unmaking (which implies that the Unmade were something else before Odium unmade them), with what Raboniel almost does to the Sibling, and with the general "Honor and Cultivation have ten but Odium only has nine" theme we're seeing.

  46. My name is Romodiius. It is very nice to meet you all. I was recommended the Way of Kings by my cousin about 6 years ago but I have a difficult time reading. Not because I'm illiterate, mind you, but because I just don't like reading and would rather be playing video games or watching anime instead. So I bought the book and it sat in my closet collecting dust for years. About 3 years ago though, I met a co-worker who I was trying to get to know and had asked him what he liked to do in his spare time. He replied that he liked to read. I asked him what books, he said lots of books. I told him the story of the book I bought and never read because I just didn't like to read and mentioned that it was The Way of Kings. His ears perked up at the mention of it and a sly smile slid up one side of his face, even though he was obviously trying to hide it. He said he'd read that one. I asked if it was any good, since I just had it sitting around at home. He answered with something like "yeah, it's pretty good". And I could tell that I was creeping the guy out at this point as his answers were short and didn't offer much in the way of dialogue. Was it my breath? I didn't know. So I tapered off and ended the conversation, disregarding it as a failed attempt at being friendly. The next day he approached me and informed me that the book was offered on audible and I could listen to it if I didn't like the idea of reading. I thanked him for the suggestion, surprised that he was speaking to me, and told him that I would check it out. My commute to work was 2 hours each way. Yes, I commuted nearly 4 hours a day to get to work. So I considered this an opportunity to use the time wisely and instead of listening to endless hours of music I would listen to a book instead. That was what intelligent people did, right? Read books and stuff? Well I was feeling scholarly that day so I downloaded audible, subscribed for the monthly membership, and purchased the Way of Kings. 45 hours and 30 minutes later I was hooked, understandably. I have since bought all of the Cosmere books on Kindle, Audible, and some paper books for good measure. Now that Rhythm of War is released I am reading again the Stormlight Archive from the beginning (currently in the middle of Words of Radiance) and I am here to learn more about the Cosmere, but also about Brandon Sanderson as well. It is my goal to one day create a fan-made 3D animated movie of The Way of Kings. Well, more like an animated series, as I am currently teaching myself software development and 3D animation. So that's why I am here. I want to get it right. I want to do the book justice if I ever get to the point that I can actually make something of my studies. And this forum will help me get there.

They all had an understanding but never made it official, and Endowment sees it as a broken oath and that they had it coming, showing she has a heart colder than the artic. There is no broken promise for odium to exploit, especially since that would make him weak as well and make things look very different, as odium would then use agents to kills Shard rather than doing it himself.
