I wanted to finish this book series by the end of this year but I'm still only on book seven of this series. It's slow going.

End of part 4 of the AU comic! Which i should really give an actual title to at this point. BIG THANKS TO WIRESEGAL on the 17th shard discord for EDITING in this chapter, and especially making the dialogue really pop. i didn’t wanna post these 2 pages separated because the dialogue moves from one page to the other. No idea what kind of gambling it is where you pool all your money at the start of a game since that seems pretty much like the opposite of gambling, but look. I really wanted to draw them putting a buncha glowing spheres in a bowl.

Oh i basically have been waiting to draw this scene since i started the comic. Not exactly this page, since i hadn’t decided on a lot of stuff- nor expected i’d get this far at all tbh- but Gaz almost sort of being sorry for being... yknow.... Like That. Not outright a villain, but he was a hurdle that Kaladin had to overcome in a way or another. In this AU, he just went beyond that to turn him into an asset as well

I've been thinking about it lately, about how your bonded spren is supposed to be kinda guiding you through the process of becoming a radiant... Meaning a spren that can't talk would lend itself to serious misunderstandings.

Thus concludes chapter 5 of the AU comic/Last Bridge Standing. Miscellaneous thoughts: - Everything about Gaz's backstory is, of course, a headcanon. To be honest, i don't think we'll ever get anything like that about him, because he's such a minor character, which is fine because it leaves me more room to experiment. - The most important part of this chapter for me was showing him genuinely happy and smiling as a cute child and then having that smile be taken away forever. - Luka started bonding with Gaz after he lost his eye. You can kinda see her there in page 29, chilling on his leg. I like hiding her in random places. - The black and white pages are sheer laziness, but i think they worked out well. - The red overlay on Kaladin is a symbolic depiction of the fact he's been gored by the storm and that i didn't want to draw that. - I love Gaz very much. It's kind of an obvious fact, but i haven't gone on about it for a while and i want to. He's a very important character to me for some bizarre reason. I love the concept of "cowardly, greedy, petty bully who's secretly desperate to feel useful". I wouldn't say it's relatable but damnation if it isn't oddly endearing.

aka *presses fast forward on a lifetime of increasingly crippling problem gambling and debt to escape flashback land* side commentary: - sometime in the last couple of months i started stylizing his hair so much they stopped looking like greasy curls which is what they’re SUPPOSED to be and ended up looking like cute baby hair. We need… To go back. Put some more grease on this boy. - I had the hardest time figuring a good way to depict Gaz’s gambling problem. I read up on it a lot but it still doesn’t really help translate in a comic. I did my best tho. - On this subject: I feel kind of weird because so far i’ve depicted Red and Vathah as sort of beneficiaries of Gaz’s gambling problems - as this whole flashback is about, he’s REALLY unlucky and so they’re shown sort of making money over a crippling problem they’re aware of. And like, that feels really unfair to them… Kinda untrue too. In OB there’s a scene i thought was rly nice where Vathah puts his foot down and has them stop playing for real stakes despite Gaz’s insistence when he runs out of money. So that’s the type of guy he is. I will try to rectify in the next page.

And that's all for this part of the AU comic. Next scene is the side-carry. However, before that, i might end up drawing a small shippy/fix-it-fix comic of The Final Empire. I’ve a scene stuck in my head that i wanna get out.
