  1. Is it just me that was made really uncomfortable by the whole Jasnah unilaterally changing inheritance laws? I can believe it on the level of, you can theoretically change any law you want, it's not like you actually have a kingdom to rule at the moment and it just shows all the highprinces that this imperial project has failed and they're gonna need to resume sovereignty once alethkar is reconquered. One of the things I really liked about roshar is how diverse it's cultures and how societal norms were being debated. In history, there were a lot of movements with various broadly egalitarian views- but that doesn't mean those movements, had they achieved power would have been able to enforce it on everyone else. Im a lot less excited about this state centric, Whiggish history of things can only ever get better and all you need is a ruler with a brain and boom society is Fixed. It feels kinda similar to the so called Rationalist Fanfictions like the one where Bella from Twilight uses Science to completely change global and vampire society in the name of Progress, disregarding the fact that the very fact it didnt happen means there were strong societal forces against it, or insulting all the characters and the society that's been built by the author by saying that they simply hadn't thought about equality but now that someone Rational has come along and told them how good it is, they're going to completely change their society to fix it. With the extreme level of changes Jasnah is autocratically decreeing, I can't help but think that she's a terrible queen and will soon be sidelined, discrediting her policies for possibly centuries afterwards. Even Catherine the Great wasn't comfortable issuing such far ranging reforms and she's the model of the enlightened despot, and Alethkar doesnt have the absolutist tradition of Tsarist Russia. Perhaps a good real world parallel is Josephinism in the Austrian monarchy- you have an enlightened monarch who personally adheres to egalitarian views, who has a broad vision for radical societal changes that he is fundamentally sure will make life better overall. In attempting impose these views on everyone, disregarding the vested interests, the complex legal traditions, the privileges that people seek to retain, etc however, he alienated everyone and essentially created massive revolts out of nowhere that long term severely weakened his state and its position in central Europe. Jasnahs position is even less stable than Joseph's, the intellectual tradition behind her reforms is so much less developed than 18th century Habsburg lands, and it is so incredibly unrealistic that everyone just goes Yes your majesty. And yeah I get that society is undergoing massive changes, but in times of crisis people tend to rally to the established order for some level of stability and societal changes are slow, each step is resisted by the established order and they require very broad bases of popular support. If jasnah can pull all of this off with just a bit of grumbling from the nobility, I just wouldn't be able to take any rosharan politics seriously.

  2. Guard walking down the street when they hear a squeaking. Look down an alley and see Syl slowly trying to drag a rat from a garbage can. Syl: Don't worry! It's for Kaladin! Guards look at each other. Guards mutter "Radiants" and walk away. This is the interlude that not only we deserve but the interlude we need.

  3. I love love love the parallelism here between Kal and his dad. I've been saying how similar they are--and here we see just how alike they both are. Feeling needed and useful is the drug for both of them. Did you see how Lirin perked up when he realized he still had a purpose?? It's like Kal looking in a mirror, yet neither of them can see themselves in the other. Though Kal almost did. And that's a point of growth. I think this will be such an important journey for both of them, and in a way, it mirrors Adolin and Dalinar--who are you beyond being your father's son? What do you want? How can you acknowledge your parent's influence while not letting them forge your own path. So exciting to see. Overall, though, poor Hesina--so many brooding men in her life. She needs Syl more than anyone! :-)

  4. Typo. I think Lirin's attitude towards Kaladin's departure from the army is a bit insensitive. He just lost everything, and all you can think of is how you were right all along? Honestly, Lirin, I love you, but you have a son with depression and severe self-doubt. Be a bit more aware of the moment. Don't say, "You're finally going to be the person we want you to be and stop doing things that don't matter!"

  5. I am glad that Kal has found a new purpose and will be helping Lirin. However, I am a little put off by Lirin's attitude. His smugness at proclaiming that he was right all along is definitely not a good look for him.

Here are my metal vials in the belt I made. I made it so it buttons onto the belt and can be taken off whenever, which was nice so that I didn't have to have little glass vials at my waist the whole time. I filled the vials with glitter/foil and mouthwash at the wonderful suggestions of @Kingsdaughter613 and @Krox.

  7. I'm confused, why are people saying Navani should be able to get Nicrosil but not Chromium? Isn't Nicrosil an alloy of Chromium? Or was there an in-world mention of one of them that I missed?

  8. Really? I thought the opposite. On some level, I don’t think Kaladin ever resolved the whole ‘Can I kill to protect?’ issue, and there’s also some underlying beef with his father he has to work out. Plus, he’d hit a wall as a soldier. When you can’t move forward, you may have to move to the side- or even backwards. This experience should open new opportunities for him, even if he doesn’t stay a surgeon.

  9. @SpeakoftheDeval Agree completely - if you look at real history too much change too fast never lasts in a calm, peaceful way. In fact, the only example that comes to mind of many radical changes lasting long term is the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar claimed politically that he needed to be in power to implement reforms that would help the common people and he did get in office as Consul and then Dictator and implement these massive changes. He was eventually assassinated, but his heir eventually won the resulting war of succession and kept most of the changes in place. I think it's important to point out that Caesar was still assassinated even after the destructive civil wars between Gaius Marius and Sulla had pretty much purged all remaining strong leaders who could oppose him. It was Caesar's own ally Pompey who led the opposition in his initial rise to power, then the seemingly cowed Senators who assassinated him. I don't think that Sanderson will ignore this, even if some fans don't see it yet. There will be a rebellion or at least major civil unrest in response to Jasnah's massive changes. I think it will come as a surprise to the POV characters, because they are only looking at it in terms of objective right/wrong and morality. The problem is that even if someone agrees with the morality of Jasnah's proposed changes they could still oppose them politically. And there will be people who simply don't agree at all, or who agree but feel the changes should be implemented more slowly. The only one who is savvy enough to see it is Navani, but she's majorly distracted and not focusing on internal Alethi politics.

  14. Real world castles were often built with dead ends, secret passages, elevated entrances, and traps all as a way to confuse anyone trying to invade the castle. My theory is that when Urithiru was alive, the walls and rooms could be rearranged for a similar purpose. Perhaps as the Sibling withdrew the tower got frozen in one of these unnatural configurations.

  15. Now I'm thinking about how much more of a loss Tien must have been for her, as I imagine he was that dose of balance to the family dynamic. Poor Hesina indeed...now I've made myself sad. Now on to my thoughts: To those who are pointing out the insensitivity of Lirin's reaction to Kaladin's "retirement" and being bothered by it, I think that that is the point. This arc for Kaladin is about finding something new about himself, about re-discovering and connecting things from his past, addressing them, and forging them into a new/different direction than either he or Lirin could have imagined. The conflict in that is going to come from first both Kaladin and Lirin having to discover that "you can never go home again" so to speak. Kaladin even seems to know that this chain of events was inevitable, but will ultimately prove to be not for him. He doesn't want this, but he will have to go through the motions in order to prove it to himself, and to Lirin as well. Lirin has to see that his little boy, who he had maintained a very specific set of hopes and dreams for has changed dramatically, and is a different person, and will be a different person regardless of their time in the new OR. There is going to be a lot of fun play on character development, interactions, revelations, and growth on both men's parts, and I think this is probably the part of the book I'm looking forward to the most now. I hope Brandon delivers. A side note for the Laral shippers: I think Brandon is cutting that off immediately here: Laral has her own problems to deal with, including young children that need their mother, who is also now a citylady. She just lost a husband that she loved, and is not going to be in any kind of place for pursuing a romantic relationship with anyone. Especially not someone who has his own issues, and also still has very strong negative feelings ("blowhard") towards her late husband, and the father of her children. It also would seem a very crass thing to do for someone to swoop in and fill that gap in a short timespan, I don't think Brandon has any intention of writing that. Could that story be told? Kaladin working through his issues in a mirror of Laral working through hers, with the end result that real affection blossoms again over time. Sure it could, but not in this book, not in the timeframe we have for it. Kaladin's page time is going to be spent mostly dealing with his own issues, and working out the distance between him and his father. Laral will likely play a role in Kaladin learning some things on leadership etc, taking inspiration from her and her strength. But romance is out, imo, and I think Brandon is setting that expectation here.

  16. I disagree, Kaladin's pretty clearly part of the A plot involving Urithiru. Shallan and Adolin in Shadesmar are the B plot, and Dalinar and Jasnah in Emul will probably be the C plot. After the last chapter I think Kaladin/Navani/Venli/Renarin/(Rlain or Moash) is a pretty solid prediction for the major A plot POVs.

  17. Frankly I am not the main hero of what I want to tell but I will do. 3 Day ago in Turkey was an earthquake of 7.0 intensity and after this there was a flood in the city(İzmir) The announced death toll is 100 now. People collecting donations for the homeless, they are trying to help them. 90 hours after the earthquake a 3 year old girl ws recqued alive. This such a miraculous event but then I found out that the girl's Mother was dead. The things that happened are very sad. But the brutal mindset of other people that hurt me More. I have read many Turkish and foreign comment stating that İzmir deserves this. I think every act and avery thought that makes human life cheap is disease and I realized that this disease has no religion and race. (I am sorry for my bad English)

  19. *sigh* He experimented with the aspects of Jasnah's character that he hadn't worked out yet. As he didn't have anything specific he needed her to be, he checked out whether she could be something that many of his fans wanted her to be. That isn't weird, that's just nice. Ultimately, he found something that worked for how he could see the character being and decided on going forwards with it, and informing his fans of that decision.

  20. After several months of intensive work, we're happy to finally announce our interactive map and timeline of Roshar! Use it as a refresher on the events of the books before Rhythm of War is released or simply explore the world of Roshar. If you have any issues using the map or have suggestions for us, feel free to comment here, use our feedback thread, or approach us on Discord. Read on to find out more about the map's creation, its features, and what the future holds! Watch this trailer to get a visual overview of things instead: The project came about when our amazing staff member @Jofwu approached me, Paleo, about creating something similar to Netflix's map of The Continent for their Witcher series, based on his detailed timeline of events in The Stormlight Archive. We promptly set out to get the basic map and timeline functionalities done, while coming up with additional neat features to implement along the way. User @Stoneward13 kindly let us use his HD map remakes of both Roshar and Shadesmar, which made the detailed map feasible in the first place. A huge thanks to him is in order! We worked out how we wanted to display which information, gathered art for the various entries, and then integrated it all into the web application. We'd like to thank all the artists who granted us permission to use their works for this endeavor at this point. Thanks also to our own @Otto Didact for helping out with his cartography expertise. Once we felt confident enough to share our work with some more people, we entered a closed beta phase with our Patreon supporters, who provided valuable feedback and helped iron out some leftover kinks. Additionally, we approached @Ysondra of cosmere.es about translating all the information into Spanish. She, @Vanahian, and @Bea did so in a monumental effort over the course of only a few weeks, all the while identifying and fixing issues with the original English text as well! With this and finishing touches done, we were ready for release. Features This of course leaves us with the question of what features the map and timeline actually bring. The following list gives a rough overview: Fully labeled, explorable map of Roshar—including Shadesmar Detailed timeline of the history of Roshar, spanning from pre-history to current events in the published books upto Oathbringer Summaries of events, locations, and characters including links to related items and further details on the Coppermind Wiki Localized content, currently available in the following languages besides English: Spanish Layers on top of the map that can be enabled at any time, displaying useful additional information Overlay the borders of the historic Silver Kingdoms Show color indicators of the allegiances of various nations Map out the ten Oathgate locations Powerful filtering and customization capabilities Filter timeline events by tags Display a timeline separately from the rest to identify a single character's or book's events Lock navigation controls to a separate timeline to follow only its events Upcoming We do not consider this project finished by any means! We'll be delivering improvements as we come up with them and will of course fix any bugs that have found their way into the code. Translations into more languages are forthcoming, albeit with no ETAs as of yet. We appreciate any kind of input and actually have ways in which you can contribute. The project is open-source and hosted on GitHub, so feel free to have a look at the code or report issues there. You can also submit bug reports and suggestions through the forums or Discord in the #17s channel, of course. If you'd like to help out with translations you can also approach us for some pointers at where to start. Artists who want to help out with filling in some of the gaps are also invited to contribute, but please come talk to us for coordination first! It should be noted that the timeline is only current with the events of Oathbringer right now and will stay so for at least a few months. Once timelines for Rhythm of War and Dawnshard are finalized, we'll be updating the app and will release the new content—with a note about upcoming spoilers published ahead of time. We hope you'll have as much fun with this map as we had developing it! If you'd like to support our work and want to get early access to projects like this if they come up again, consider becoming a patron.

  22. I mean what else do you think they would do? For now possibly they might think there are bigger fish to fry but long term? Is it really satisfying if the Kholins just face no consequences for their actions? Female rulers have happened sure, but normally in cases where the last king doesn't have an heir. If there is a male heir present, then the obvious solution is a female regent, which theoretically is exactly what should've happened both with Jasnah and Gavinor and Laral and her sons. The Kholin family are in a unique position and perhaps have leeway to temporarily change things to help the war effort, but I think long term everyone will be expecting Gavinor to be crowned as soon as the wars over, whether Jasnahs still around or not. In fact this change will perhaps widely be seen as Jasnah changing the law so that her getting the power to change the law isn't illegal anymore, so that even when the war is over there will be a legal basis for her to still be queen. In fact, earlier when people were wondering why she would receive Laral as citylady officially, it makes sense that she'd do so to normalise and attempt to legitimise this legal innovation that is the basis of her own power. She's probably going to try and get a fairly sizable crowd to watch her officially confirm Laral, implicitly getting their assent for it. The rank system probably does feel embattled though and they're probably looking for explicit support, not just hostile passivity from a monarch. On the one hand radiants are throwing it out of order, and on the other high placed Kholins don't seem to care about maintaining their station. Anything less than active endorsement of the rank system, or in other words if Jasnah does the logical thing and gives darkeyes high positions thus implicitly denying the system, is an attack on the system and they'll try and fight it eventually. As always, yes this is definitely exceptional circumstances and people probably just want to get through it, but they'll also probably be looking for a return to normalcy afterwards. In fact the reactionary backlash could wind up with a more ossified hierarchy than before.

  23. I don’t see anything weird about it. He got feedback from fans and beta readers who went “I see some of myself in this aspect of the character” and decided to explore that aspect of her. Authors can make characters a specific sexuality for reasons other than appealing to a certain demographic. Maybe it’s needed for thematic, or plot reasons. Maybe it just feels right. Maybe he just wants to. Brandon listened to feedback from fans and beta readers and used it to inform how he wrote the character going forward. What more do you want?

  24. Laral has kids. A "Young Avenger" style team-up in the back 5 with Lift, Oroden, Cord, Laral's kids, and Shallan/ Adolin's kid(s), and Gavinor is the adventure Novella I never knew I needed until now.

  25. If I had to guess, these weird designs actually indicate that Urithiru was "alive" when the Sibling was active. We know Syl remembers Urithiru being full of lights back in the day. In Navani's last chapter, she says that the tower can brace itself for a coming Highstorm. I think that this means that the Sibling used to be able to mold its internal structure to fit the needs of the Radiants. "Dead-end" hallways could be opened by the Sibling, and rooms could be expanded or shrunk depending on the circumstances. The current unchanging state of Urithiru is in is simply the result of the tower freezing up now that the Sibling is absent. Urithiru is like an old rusty car that hasn't burned gas in years. Urithiru is a corpse instead of an engine.

  28. I loved this so, so much. Snark-to-snark combat, family banter, some progress on Kaladin’s part- it’s phenomenal. Also, Roshar has discovered vaccines?!?! That’s incredible. They’re way more advanced than I thought them to be. I wonder if Taravangian’s herald is responsible for these advances... I also thought it quite poetic that Lirin and Kaladin faced a similar situation- even if Lirin’s issue was more easily resolved. I’m excited to see how their dynamic plays out. Just a few more days!!!

Everyone's allowed to hang out here, but all "why did this have to happen" "ugh I don't care" and especially "I wish she wasn't a minority" or "well asexuality is stupid" type posts will be hidden. If you're not happy with Jasnah's orientation, romantic or sexual, then I suggest you stay off this thread. You're definitely allowed to wish she was another form of queer and headcanon her as that, but this thread will focus on her canon identity. I am creating an echo chamber of positivity and love. I'm going to request that RoW spoilers maybe not be gone into depth here, they'd be off-topic anyway but some of us haven't read all the chapters. 32. I think Moash as a character is a more complicated subject than most of the people involved with the discourse realize. It's hard to say whether or not he's good or bad, both due to the elements influencing his beliefs and actions, and the issues surrounding Roshar in general making it difficult to determine what is and isn't right. Since this is the RoW forums, I know everyone's going to be talking about chapter 8, but even in this case I don't think it's as simple as Moash just trying to psychologically torture Kaladin. Moash has been heavily influenced by the Unmade at this point, he's not operating on the same logic as everyone else. At this point Moash believes humanity (with a few exceptions) is corrupt beyond repair, and ultimately doomed due to the fact that the Everstorm makes Odium's forces undying. The war will continue until one side is wiped out, and the final victor should be the singers. He knows that Kaladin pushes himself to save everyone, and carries everyone's death as a personal burden. The only way he could end the pain this puts him in is to give himself up to Odium, or end it himself, and he knows Kaladin well enough to know that he won't give away his pain. Moash sincerely, without a hint of spite or malice, belives that this is the only way to end Kaladin's suffering. As for whether or not he will be redeemed, well, I think it's a little more complicated than it appears at first glance. What would need to happen for him to be redeemed, I mean, isn't it good to be fighting for the singers? Personally, I think Moash is on the right track but misguided, he's fighting for the right people, but for the wrong reasons. His "redemption" (in my eyes) wouldn't involve returning to the human coalition, but allying himself with Venli's faction instead. He'd make a powerful ally, he's practically a member of the Heavenly Ones and seems to be of similar rank to the Fused, and the end of Oathbringer seemed to imply he was gaining a strong influence with some of the regular singers.

  33. Hi all, We have removed some off-topic things here, and would like to focus this discussion on Jasnah specifically. We would also like to note to be respectful to asexual and other queer members. If you don't know much about aceness/queerness, it's a good opportunity to listen to other experiences that are not your own! Please remember that there are real people who are these orientations, including in this community and this thread/chat. Speaking about sexual orientations in negative terms or trying to dissect someone’s identity perpetuates stigma against those who identify as queer and is directly against the 17th Shard Code of Conduct. These comments have an effect that extends far beyond an internet post. Thanks!

  35. I still think the previous chapters were perfect, actually - this is my favourite Part 1 of any of the Stormlight books so far, to be honest, I love how fast the pacing has been and how things have changed in the last year! But that's totally fair. I'm just nervous about when the bubble will finally pop for Lirin, because it has to eventually... he still is so totally oblivious to Kaladin's mental state. Not that Kal wants either of his parents to clue in anyways, given what he says in this chapter about not wanting his parents to know what he's been through... Definitely super excited for the next chapter though! I can't believe it's only two weeks now till the book's release.

  36. It shouldn't be, but it was still very surprising to me how much Kaladin is worried about his dad's approval. It seemed so strange for Kaladin who usually doesn't really care about anyones opinion and rather finds people annoying, to jump so much around his father. There are clearly some issues here which I hope they resolve in part 2. I didn't mind Kaladin returning to being a surgeon but the way it happened made me sad. It was almost too familiar, just going along with his controlling parent just because he is so lost. It was just so striking to me how differently he reacts to his father compared to anyone else. He had to deal with a lot of expectations and people giving him positions and he would usually accept them but he would always complain and stuff and this one was just so.. passive on his part. He seems to revert to being a young boy again and I hope he will soon realise that he is no longer that boy and that he needs to grow. This is certainly going to be one of the more interesting dynamics and subplot of the part two.

  37. And how many nobles would be considering switching to Odium? At least the Parshmen would let them keep their slaves, maintain their traditions and essentially what rudimentary political constitution they have, in terms of the vague sense of "proper behaviours and laws". What's the point of fighting for a queen who given her track record is set to erase any recognition that you're better than a darkeyes? From their perspective, she's using despotic authority with a fairly weak legal basis to reach down and destroy the very basis of a stable family, the patriarchy and society as a whole. And it's not like collective action wouldn't be possible either, given most nobles are in or around the shattered plains/ urithiru. They could easily form a diet to limit royal authority even if theyre individually too small to secede.

  39. Well, I don't think Kaladin being a surgeon is going to "stick". Kaladin thinks he should become a surgeon again after "giving up the spear". And interestingly, Arclo referred to him as "the surgeon" Surgebinder the Sleepless were watching from afar (one would presume). But Ka's reaction is more "resigned to the default course" than enthusiastic. "I always knew I'd come back to this" is not really embracing it. He also never actually said it. He let his father say it, after dodging raising the topic because he knew what his father would assume, and then agreed with him.

  40. I appreciate this a lot. I love that he's being inclusive--thinking about the human experience broadly and how various types of people would live in this world he created. It speaks to how much he loves his worlds and his creations that he wants to represent the human experience in a wide variety of ways. I really appreciate how Jasnah has been written so far--and how thoughtful he is about the fandom, but also the authenticity of his characterization. He creates a character and then figures out--what makes them tick? Who would they be if they lived IRL, and how would they think? And when he feels that he doesn't have enough info to write it well, he does his research. I've been very happy to see him avoid the r/MenWritingWomen tropes that all of us women have seen emerge, sometimes particularly in fantasy. Turned me off of SOOOOO many fantasy writers as I grew up.

Feels like regression, but who knows. Might be the step backwards he needs to get ready for another leap. Syl seems to be more than fine with it and even urges him towards the decision. This seems to be in line with voidlight sucking in or warping normal light around the spheres containing it. Now we can guess what sucked Jezrien.

That does make some sense but I didn't expect Investiture to behave this way, maybe under certain conditions or if it's free Investiture? I'm thinking Stormlight (as it's crucial to the ecosystem of Roshar and that shapes how it behaves) and the Dor (simply because it's pressurized) but the Mists don't behave that way (not entering houses) but Preservation's power leaking through the Spiritual via metals seems to
