  2. All members who are in the meme (Not sure if I missed one, tell me if I did) Hello all! I have finished my treat to the Shard in celebration of Halloween- An 8-minute meme video. This took me the better part of two weeks, with many nights of me staying up late and me grinding through it on the weekends. It was grueling, it was painful, and whether or not It's worth it depends on you. Hope you enjoy it and... @Chaos Hi. Sorry to bother you, I know you're busy, but it's Halloween, and this video has a lot to do with you, and you said it's fine if I ping you only once, so, hope you enjoy, please don't ban me, this is likely the last time I'm ever pinging you. Happy birthday (Already said it yesterday, but you never say it enough). Hope you enjoy it. Again, please don't ban me. Okay, turns out, the meme is copyright (Sorta forgot that was a thing when making this), so I can't use youtube to show it to you, I am still leaving the link in case it works, but I'm also leaving the file. Life is just... great Scout_Fox suggested downloading it in google drive and sending that link as well, so here, let's that works better. Explanation for roles

  5. Well, folks. We made it. Day 31, Crawl, featuring Star and her youngest daughter. I got a great progression for this one. I'll be honest, I was really happy with this and then I sent it to a friend and I know he wasn't trying to be mean, but he critiqued it and it really hurt so I have a hard time seeing good things about this drawing. All I can see is that Star's eyes are way too far apart, both her and Pearl's hair are too dark, her eyes are too big, her arm is a little wonky, her lips are too small, and her nose is too round. But that's just no good to focus on that. My favorite thing about this drawing... nearly eclipses all of that. The color. I didn't start coloring my drawings until just, what, 8 months ago? It is ridiculous how much that adds to my art. I don't think I can possibly express to all of you what my art journey has been like this last year. The amount of progress I've made is mind blowing and I just wish that I could go back in time to my 11 year old self so that I could show her all the wonderful things she would accomplish. Since COVID started I've had cycles of depression and my anxiety has gotten much worse, to the point that I'm having one or two panic attacks every week. My art has helped keep me going. Guys, this time in history sucks. But I think that when I look back at this in another 4 years, it will be in fondness. Shards, I am crying. I told y'all I was gonna cry when I wrote this, I knew it would happen. Anyway, I hope my art has been a bright spot for you you guys during this crappy time. I know a lot of people are scared of Inktober because of artistic burn out, but for me, the art really, really keeps me going. It helps that I have people who are eager to see that art that I make. So thank you, everyone. All my love. - Shard of Thought

  6. Chana and Nale got a thread for their pictures, so in all fairness, Kalak and Pailiah should as well. The art on these two is absolutely amazing, I think. Also, Kalaks Blade looks incredibly cool.

  9. @Aspiring Writer Ok, there's something fundamentally wrong with this discussion. The thread is for controversial opinions. People share them and there are bound to be discussions as obviously there are going to be disagreements, but for the most part, people understand that if something made it to this thread, it must be a pretty strong opinion, not likely to change, so most discussions end up as exchanges to demonstrate that both opinions exist and end with an "agree to disagree". This is what was going to happen here since some people engaged you in a friendly way telling you why they didn't share your opinion but without necessarily trying to convince you to change your mind. You obviously feel strongly about the topic, it's obvious that any attempt to make you change your point of view would be futile. However you have tried to change their opinions and outright told them that they are wrong, which is why the thread is so derailed now. Now, regarding your take on passion. It's not that people cannot feel so strongly about a topic that they shouldn't make huge two-hour reviews, it's that not everyone is willing to spend that kind of time watching them and you should not judge them on that. Not only that but you posted it repeatedly as an argument but let's be real. Most people will come here, catch up on the discussion expecting to post an answer and continue with their lives. Some may get curious but don't expect most people to be happy when you tell them they need to do homework before going on with the discussion. Also, I think you put too much weight on objectivity here. You implied that if people watch the video they will change their mind on this topic, which is just not true. Believe me, no amount of arguments will convince me that the sequel trilogy is not worth watching, I enjoy it greatly and likely will continue to do so for a long while. Not because it's the pinnacle of narrative, but because it's simply fun. Which brings me to the last point. You said we should demand higher quality because we "content" ourselves with mediocrity. I'm sorry but I'm not simply content with what Star Wars is, I'm entirely happy with it. When I watch a Star Wars movie I don't want to see a masterpiece of narrative with an intricately designed plot and carefully chosen themes, I just want fun characters, good visuals, and some space fighting, and so far, it has greatly delivered. I was obsessed with objectivity in stories for a while and said everywhere how this story is objectively good and this one is objectively bad. It even messed with my love for another "sci-fi" story, Doctor Who. I loved it, but it bothered me that it had no consistency, or overarching plot, past plot points didn't have any weight on present events. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I could because I kept waiting for some "Now it all makes sense" moment which never came. Then, I ditched objectivity and decided that the only thing I care about is if I enjoy the story or not. From that moment onwards I enjoy literally everything infinitely more than before. It's my way of enjoying stories and I intend to continue that way for as long as it makes me happy. If you feel passion about trying to find more sense in every story, if you're always striving to find consistency, in judging how a piece of writing is objectively good and that is what makes you happy, you shouldn't change that for anything, but you also shouldn't try and tell others they're enjoying things the wrong way because there's a whole spectrum here. You are on one end, I'm on the other, and there's everything in between. Let's just share our views so we can understand each other without trying to take the fun away from the other, shall we?

  10. Chana is holding a prominent sword and is associated with the most destructive order of Radiants. I think she may be depicted with an exposed safehand to emphasize her masculinity. She is associated with Brave and Obedient. She’s a female soldier, and that seems to be recognized, but how do you deal with that in a culture where women are not supposed to war? Emphasize that she’s a ‘masculine’ woman. Her sword is also very straight, as opposed to having a more feminine curve. Also, look at the positioning. A sword going straight down from the pelvis is very masculine. (Pretty sure I don’t need to explain why.) She is the only woman wearing armor. She is also the only woman not to be drawn so as to bring attention to her body. She’s drawn to read ‘male’ despite being female. Compare the other female Heralds: Notice how they are all drawn to emphasize their curves and femininity? Also, the latter two are not directly facing the viewer and Vedel is in motion with her head turned away. Meanwhile, Chanarach’s picture looks very like Kalak’s: You can see the stylistic similarities. Only male characters are looking this directly at the viewer. All three are directly facing the viewer. And all but Jezrian (who is connected to wind) have straight blades. A straight sword is a male symbol. Ishar is looking up, and lacks a sword. But his body is drawn on very straight lines and is directly facing the viewer: Notice how the lower part of his robes implies a sword? Chana is not meant to be feminine. So no safehand, because men don’t have one.

  13. It actually looks like it’ll be coming out sometime next week. Brandon talked about it in the lastest Kickstarter update. Basically, the book’s-done, and now it’s going through copy edits and stuff so it’s ready for release. On reddit, Peter has said it’s likely to be out after Tuesday next week, and that it’ll be released as soon as its done. So, now we wait I guess? Honestly late October was a pretty ambitious deadline, with editing and stuff as it is, especially considering Brandon basically doubled his projected word count for it haha.

  17. Just building on lemiltock's post. We have two WoB. Originally heralds had access to levels of stormlight no radiant could hope to attain and that the honorblades gave them a direct conduit to Honor. However that has changed since Honor has been shattered. So at this point in time we dont fully know what honorblades are capable of while honor is dead. I understand most of what you wrote is a theory but we don't know why dalinar hasn't been able to augment the others. We know from brandon that it manifests differently from order to order. So it could just be they are expecting it to act one way, when it acts another. For instance i would hazard that they would assume it would empower kaladins gravitation powers, but i saw a theory on the board that posits it strenthens or increases the number of his squires. I could easily see them testing and re testing the gravitation only to not realize people across urithiru suddenly got windrunner powers briefly and didnt get a chance to discover them.

  18. New worst pet peeve: People who follow the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law and the reasons behind it. Context: I’m in a Discord server where one of the rules is ‘No RP’. That makes sense, RP can get icky in some scenarios, and it can be somewhat hard to moderate. So it’s fine, I never RP there. Today I was just chatting in there, and I mentioned I was eating a sugar cookie. Someone joking asked if they could have some, so I said, and I quote, “lol, sure. Yeets cookie.” and I got fricking called out for it. That was too much RP. Internal Screaming.

  21. On Pailiah: why would she be old? Is it because of the theory that she is Taravangians ardent? Because right now, it seems to be 50/50 on wether or not she is Battar or Pali, since Mr T claimed she was Battar at the end of Oathbringer. Also, I think that it was hinted that Chana is kind of young. Her chapter heading portrait looks like a pretty young woman IMO (I wish they kept her helmet from that in this new illustration). Finally, it makes sense for all the Heralds to be conventionally attractive in these pictures, given that these are supposed to be in-world portraits. Generally, people who are admired, or even worshipped, are portrayed favorably by the culture admiring them, which would include looking good.

His outfits really remember me a constable, but there is some mix of both senerity and concern on his expression, it just looks right depction of him Chanarach looks nice too, but I expected a illustration of the Herald of the Dustbringers to looks more... I don't know, war-like? She looks too peaceful for me Btw, now we have illustrations of all Heralds except Battar

  32. No overt level of compasion? Seriously? Dalinar and Kaladin are also natural leaders, but they do not go out of their way to comfort the widowed and orphaned spouses and children of their fallen men, as we see Adolin do. Nor would they, in the middle of a climatic battle, forget all about it and just comfort a grieving mother, like Adolin does in Oathbringer. Honestly, to say that Adolin isn't Edgedancer material is an insult to both to him and the order.

  34. I think that it feels harsh to draw that assumption just based of Chana being Ishars daughter. Especially considering that Stormlight has people like Lift, Shallan, Eshonai, Venli, Even Navani or Jasnah, who are related to powerful men by marriage or blood are in the story on their own merits. If any character this far has been in the narrative just based on parentage, it is Elhokar. I totally respect that you want Chana to be free of familiar ties with another Herald though.

  35. I would hate this. Women shouldn't have to be daughters of famous fathers to be important themselves - I'd have hoped that we have moved on from the trope of women having to be a beautiful princess or a genius scientist's beautiful daughter to merit a role in the narrative. And it isn't like all people sharing the same ethnicity are related. But then, I am also disappointed in Pailiah's and Chana's pictures...

  36. This has basically nothing to do with the Skybreakers or Shinovar, but I randomly came up with the title Knights of Wrath and I love it. We already have Words of Radiance, which was an in world book about Surgebinders, but what if there was a book about Voidbinders? We don't really know much about Voidbinding other than it's connected to Odium and the Unmade, so we're probably going to have to learn more about it eventually. Odium basically just means hatred, so I think naming his "knights" after wrath is somehow fitting.

  37. I don't see Bondsmith Resonances/synergies as being AOE and mass versions of whatever the primary is. The one we know of is Stormfather Bondsmith and a Lightweaver map. Basically, the Stormfather provides information to inform the map and the map is made more detailed. Like Dalinar providing others with Stormlight, he can also provide others with his spren's knowledge. This tells me the synergies will be much more subtle pairs than simply Windrunner plus Bondsmith = Protection from the Storm (or within the Storm), although that's a pretty good one. I also believe the synergies will work both ways. A Truthwatcher + Bondsmith synergy might be a much more organic "healing" of a destroyed building, or even the "growing" of structures. The Truthwatcher "Regrowth" abilities inform the Bondsmith's Adhesion. Of course, this would imply that every order could have a synergy or set of synergies with every other order. And why the heck not! Elsecaller and Bondsmith might allow transportation directly to wherever the Highstorm is via the Perpendicularity.

  38. Day 29, one of my most anticipated prompts: Shoes. This drawing features @Jaywalk's character of the same name, with Bozo the Voidrabbit. I really don't draw Jay enough, he's such a great character. The idea to have him be wearing bunny slippers is simply inspired and I am so, so, so glad I got the excuse to do it. It's funny, yesterday I said that I didn't want to do a full body drawing because the paper wan't big enough. And today I did a fully body drawing and barely fit it on the paper. Also, bunny drawing! It is exceptionally rare for me to draw animals and considering that, I am super happy with how Bozo looks. Never actually drawn him or Havel before, which... is honestly kinda sad. I'm super happy with how this turned out, it is some of my very best work. Oh, and the mug he's holding. It says, "SNARK: One of the many services I offer." I had like three other different phrases I could have used, (Including, "Silence is goldren, duct tape is silver," "It's never too early for sarcasm," and "Please cancel my subscription to your issues.") but this one just fit the best. I love sarcastic mugs, they are lovely and so so so Jay. The mug is also filled with liquid energy, a reference to this moment from CBST. One thing I was kind of unhappy about was the fact that the purple doesn't quite show up as well as I wanted it to. His eyes are purple and the liquid in the mug is purple too, but they just kinda look black. Oh, well, I guess. And here's the progression, this one looks super cool. I feel kinda bad, Bozo's scar didn't show up as well as I'd hoped.

  39. Day 28: Float, featuring Granite, Star's only son and full fledged Mistborn. My original idea for this was that he was going to be floating over a coin but... I draw my Inktober stuff on pieces of paper less than half the size I'm used to working with so a full body would be super tiny for me. I can't believe I didn't notice that his left eye is bigger than it should be! That will never not bother me. But I can fix that on my own copy of the drawing, which is really nice. I didn't even try for Granite's left hand, the rest of the drawing was too great to be spoiled by a stubborn appendage. I love how the coin and the mistcloak look shiny, I love that the pin of his mistcloak is homage to his dear mother, I love his eyebrows and how even though he has wicked cheekbones, he still looks young. I love how much he looks like little Kelsier, I love his beautiful right hand. I just love it. I also posted this one to the gallery last night because... mistborn, y'all. Mistborn is great, I'm here for the mistborn. Granite is so wholesome, you guys, I love him to death and I need more of him in my life. I just don't have enough opportunities to write him. I'm glad all four of Star's children (adopted or otherwise) have made an appearance this year. Only Heather got drawn last year and while she is extremely important, Star loves all her children equally. Or does she? @BringerofShadows I hope Granite is a suitable replacement for Ember. Whaddya say, will that sly gaze pierce the Inquisitor's heart of stone? I totally forgot to snap a picture of the inked version! Though, to be fair, it didn't look much different at all from the drawing before the finished product. Not a super cool progression. But the gesture is absolutely adorable.

  42. AGH I'M DYING OF CUTENESS. Today is day 27 (Literally how. How did this happen.) and the prompt is Music. I had absolutely no idea what to do for this one. But then I remembered that I've wanted AJ (X-6574 for those of you who know him from Keyed or, as I'm told, FotR) to play the guitar for almost as long as his character has been around. On my planning paper, I wrote: "Sierra likes music and music is a way of expressing emotion, which I think AJ would like." And so... yeah, that's why this works for Music. It's probably the biggest prompt stretch that I have. But it's great, isn't it? I was able to live-stream drawing this which was SUPER fun, I think I'll try to do that again tomorrow if I can. AJ's face, you guys, it just makes me melt all over the floor. He just has such a sweet soul. He and Pheonix from CBST need to duel for the title of cutest husband, they're both incredible. I guess Xino is just good at writing adorably pure guys. But yeah, part of the reason it turned out so well was because I spent so much time on it. When I started, I did not intend to add any color at all, but dang that color adds a TON. I gestured out the idea for this drawing like... three months ago? Four, even? It's definitely the oldest idea on this year's planning list. And... dang, man, it turned out SO much better than anticipated. I've been saying that a lot, haven't I? But... it's true! I'm looking at my art and... guys, I'm gonna get so emotional at the end of this challenge, I'm gonna cry. And here's the progression photos. I really like how, especially in the gesture, you can see that the overall shape of the drawing is somewhat heart-like.

  43. Day 26 is Hide and I knew pretty soon after seeing this prompt what I would do for it. I wrote a story a few months ago - which, due to recent story changes to Keyed is unfortunately no longer entirely canon - and the image it painted was just so wonderful to me. I didn't draw her braid around her neck because I tried that back on day 6 for Rodent and it just didn't work out. I'll be honest, I wasn't very excited for this one, so I didn't have high hopes for it, but... dang, man. Super happy with it. There's a lot that went wrong with her face - her right eye is too far from the bridge of her nose, her nose is too exaggerated, and I shouldn't have added her top lip (I did so because I didn't think she looked feminine enough) but... yeah, pretty good drawing overall. Sweatshirts are hard, so many clothing folds.

  44. Okay, guys sorry! It's been a super busy morning for me. But here's Aurora for the prompt Dig. I was planning on having a quote for this by now, but that hasn't happened, so I can just summarize. Aurora has nothing written about her as of yet, which is why I've never drawn her up until this point. She is the 6th member of the Keyed Crew and, being a judge, she doesn't really like Ralvon who has gotten pretty good at avoiding the law. She's got plenty of verbal digs for him. And... again, you guys I didn't take full progression photos. I did this one pretty quickly and I was really tired so... yeah, sorry. I'm really excited for tomorrow's art though, so it's likely that I'll get you the full arsenal.

  45. *sigh* Yesterday was kinda rough you guys. We're getting to the end of the month and I'm starting to get a little burned out art-wise. It doesn't help that yesterday's drawing was so meh and the day before that was incredibly hard for me to draw. I was expecting to have time yesterday to draw some of this and that time didn't end up happening... But that said, I am pretty blown away by how this turned out; I love how shiny Ember's hair looks, I love the flowers in her hair, I love the shiny candle-holder and I love the blanket. It was honestly kinda chilling to draw Ember without coloring her cracks a bright warm color. Her body is cold and her Core has stopped giving her the energy she needs to live. But there is still warmth in the drawing, from the candle and from Star's words in the quote above. I like it a lot. There's also a lot of symbolism in those flowers; Ember hasn't seen flowers in CBST yet, but she'll really love them. They're small and delicate and she's six feet tall and made of metal, but she appreciates their beauty. She could never have had flowers in her hair before she died - her "hair" is made of metal and it's pretty hot. But in death, she can wear them. Oh, and the prompt for this is Rip, which I interpreted as RIP. And there's no progression photos because there wasn't a gesture and I didn't expect this to turn out as well as it did. Plus the pencil looked exactly the same as the inked version.

  46. Kay, so. Day 21, Sleep. I was originally going to draw the True Love's Kiss scene from Sleeping Beauty, but then I realized that that scene would be REALLY hard, mostly because of where Pheonix/Phillip would be, and I just didn't feel like I had enough time to tackle it and get the product that I wanted to. So, with no other choice, I searched the web for a new and better reference. And I found a pretty great one of Aurora under the sleeping curse from a nice angle. The reason why I chose to draw Star for Sleep is because... Well, it's actually insane how often she sleeps or is otherwise unconscious in CBST. I will list as many instances as I can now: In CBSS, she is asleep in her old house while Astral is doing her thing, the time I made her go unconscious because she was freaking out and I needed to talk to her so her burns would go away, her sleeping for a few days after the trip into Silence's Realm, her fainting after she was brought back from being unwritten, and her stopping her own heart when she was trapped in Silence's Realm. I think that's everything but if anyone from CBST can think of anything I forgot, I'd love to know. She'll also be asleep/in bed a lot during her pregnancy with Pearl. Anyway, about this actual drawing. Shards, you guys, this one was hard for me. My favorite part of this one is the dress. It took me a little while to find a dress I was happy with, and the one I did find I ended up completely changing most of it. But I am very happy with this end result. The lace is just gorgeous, I love the sleeves and the bodice. I think the reason Dizzy didn't turn out quite well is because I didn't have a reference for how to draw a chest laying down... But this time I did and it helped a TON. And the hair, Star's hair is always great. My least favorite thing though, is the fact that her eyes look squeezed shut. I was trying to make her cheeks stand out/make her look a little older. But... it didn't work. Her cheeks do look great though, so there's that. Oh, and the blanket is pretty sloppy - by the time I got to it, I was really done with the drawing. And here's the progression. The pencil looks the best. And sorry, I totally forgot to take a picture when it was just black and white inked.

  47. Y'all this one turned out so blving well. Day 20 is Coral which I decided to interpret as the color. This one had arguably the best gesture of all in my plans, so it's not too much of a surprise to me that it turned out as well as it did (though it is painful how often my gestures turn out better than the actual finished product ) but I'm still really, really happy with it. Pearl needs more art of her. She's one of my favorite characters with some of the least writing about her. For those of you who don't know, Pearl is the as-of-yet-not-even-an-idea-to-her-eventual-parents daughter of Star and Pheonix, the OTP of CBST. She will be an adorable toddler with the scary ability to Narrate and an angsty teen rebelling against her over-protective mother. This drawing depicts her when she's about 14 or so. I didn't do this drawing in quite the way that I usually do a drawing so progression photos weren't really possible. I went through lots of different things with her skirt and her arms (and in fact, the eraser scars of me trying to draw her arm are still preeeeetty visible on the left side of the finished product) and then I had serious trouble with her left eye (which is still a bit of a disappointment to me), so I inked all of it and even started coloring some of it before I actually finished that. It was a big mess through most of the process, but it turned out SUPER well! And here's the gesture, it's awesome.

  48. Day 19! First time Sophie has shown up in Inktober this year. Prompt is Dizzy. Y'all, I had a heck of a time deciding what to draw for this. I spent hours and hours looking around pages 700-900 of TLT for the moment just before the one I drew for today, where Sophie throws the spear of light to Xino. I intended to use that quote for the prompt Throw. Instead, I used something completely different for Throw and ended up with this for Dizzy There are so many things that I've done for Inktober this year that have helped me with my art and shown how much I've progressed since last year. But I think foremost among them is all the different poses I've done. In almost every single drawing I did last year, the character I drew was facing forward and standing up. This year... Shards. I've drawn Sierra skating, I've drawn people hugging, I've drawn Heather huddled up on Ember's statue, I've drawn hands in all sorts of positions and never shied away from actually putting effort into those hands. And today, I've drawn someone laying down. You would never guess it, but laying down is hard to draw and I didn't even have any references outside of the gesture that I did. And... yeah, I don't even know what else to say besides the fact that I'm immensely proud of myself. And here's your progression photos - they're a lot easier to do for me and y'all have liked them more than time lapses anyway, so I'll do those from here on out.

  49. Ya know, one of the things I was most excited about back on day 11 was drawing Astral's sharp teeth because that was a relatively new aesthetic change for her. But I didn't get to do it. Until now! Day 18 is Trap and it is inspired by a scene in Sleeping Beauty (my favorite Disney classic) where Maleficent traps Phillip. Sleeping Beauty is great for a lot of reasons - Aurora is by far the best singer in the Disney princess line up, Phillip is the most bad chull, underrated guy ever, and the simple story is just so sweet - but the one reason that really makes it top tier for me is how much it parallels CBST. With True Love's Kiss, a sort of sleeping curse (for you CBSTians you can interpret that as the time Star stops her heart or the fact that Star slept for 3 days that one time), and Maleficent and Astral being so similar. In fact, I've already drawn Sleeping Beauty parody art, of Star and Astral as Aurora and Maleficent respectively and I plan to draw the True Love's Kiss scene from the movie CBSTified for the prompt Sleep on the 21st. But about this particular drawing... It's kinda funny to me that I get to draw sad Heather twice in a row. She has that same sad expression, it's so sweet and heartbreaking. The world just kinda hates that poor Inquisitor, doesn't it? Even though there's already a quote associated with it, I look at this drawing and I can just hear Astral say, "Heather, you stupid, stupid girl." (with some maniacal cackles for good measure, she's good at those) I've drawn this so many times - including for last Inktober on day... three I'm pretty sure - but this is by far the best rendition of it. It turned out. So. Well. There's so much life to it, so much emotion. I would have included a longer portion of the story this is from, but this is something that's happening in the future of CBST and I don't want to spoil too much. I've already spoiled a lot. And yes, I know I changed the chains in this scene into ethereal ropes, but... The tendrils were easier to draw than chains and they look way cooler. So win-win.And it's more Astral gloating than being horribly angry, but... Well, Maleficent was grinning in my reference, and I couldn't resist drawing those wicked fangs. I took progressive pictures this time again. What's the verdict, do we like the time lapses or the progression photos better?
