  1. Alright, guys, so I'm back...ish. We had a tragedy in the family recently, which is why I was gone. I'll be on occasionally to keep up with notifs and whatnot (I'm not even going to bother trying to follow through with the ones I already have), but I won't be on as frequently for a while.

  2. Also, Jasnah being wise and able to think ahead, realizes that all of the parshman now being freed and able to think and also not being kept around, makes a huge market for slavery because many light eyes will want to replace their parshmen slaves. The issue with replacing docile slaves with bitter angry ones is that the amount of ugliness and brutality required to keep slaves from a) rebelling, b ) running away, or c ) trying to take someone with them would ultimately prove to be a drain on Alethi manpower, and also do substantial harm to Alethi society making it even harsher. Therefore, getting rid of slavery and the slave trade while the rich and powerful are for the most part already learning to live without is a extremely smart move by Jasnah in my humble opinion. And then of course, it is just the right thing to do, which I think Dalinar and Navani recognize. Side note, slaves becoming Radiants like Skybreakers or Dust Bringers could end very poorly for their former masters. And in Alethi society, having a shard blade would automatically make many slaves a higher rank than their masters (which they could then just duel and burn out their former masters eyes). In conclusion.... Good for Jasinah

  3. I find it odd that once again some fans have such a negative reaction to plot points that they have yet to see how they play out in the story. Jasnah isn’t snapping her fingers and “poof” slavery is gone. The Stormlight Archive is a TEN book long series. This is just the beginning. You are oversimplifying this chapter. Jasnah is essentially doing what Abraham Lincoln was trying to accomplish with his Emancipation Proclamation amidst the American Civil War. Even though he himself wasn’t a true abolitionist, he saw an opportunity to make a dramatic change so he acted. He didn’t get rid of slavery overnight, he simply got the ball rolling. Yes, there need to be consequences to such a dramatic amount of social and economic upheaval. It would be equally absurd If the idea of light-eyed superiority was overturned overnight with no downsides. But there is absolutely no indication that an instant, utopian resolution will happen in The Stormlight Archive. It certainly hasn't happened in any other of Sanderson's works. The fact that characters are attempting to make changes in the world they live in is not unrealistic. It is certainly not a "cloying morality play" if a small selection of characters push to get rid of slavery. Even in the United States during the nineteenth century, there existed a small number of true abolitionists. They were certainly in the extreme minority, but they still existed. The fact that people exist on Roshar who want to get of slavery is inevitable, not implausible. By the way, let’s just calm down, shall we? Everyone here is just trying to have a discussion about a series of fiction novels. If you feel someone has missed your point, it is not the end of the world. I have felt that you have missed the points of my arguments in the past, but misunderstanding is sometimes the price we pay for discussion.

  6. Yeah, in hindsight, this seems set up in a lot of ways. First - radiancy eliminating the idea that darkeyes will always stay darkeyes. There's been a whole host of former darkeyes that have now turned lighteyes. The nobility all know that, the way it is today, literally anybody might the next day turn out to be a shardweilder. The social structure is already in upheaval. Second - the advancement of the bridge crews, specifically. From slaves to the most powerful people in Alethkar and the backbone of their army. Third - the awakening of the Parshmen. Alethkar already lost most of its slave population, and has to adjust to life without them - unless they immediately create a new underclass that they'd treat like Parshmen. And fourth, of course, Jasnah herself. It's entirely in character for Jasnah to sit down, figure out how she wants society to run, and say "yep, I'm Queen now, this is how we're gonna run this country now." She's not one to avoid rocking the boat, or to go along with things just because it's the way it's been. I find point 3 to be a key here. The country's already in a situation where they've lost almost all of their slave labor. There's a clear decision point here - either enslave lots of humans to make up for the missing parshemen, or re-organize to not use slaves anymore. Jasnah's picking the second option. And looking at the long-term here, this is probably a key step in the fight against Odium. Odium wins not when the Singers kill the Humans, but when the humans turn to him. Trying to get all Alethi to stay loyal to Alethkar rather than turning to Odium seems reasonable, and the slaves would certainly be Odium's prime conversion targets. And vice versa, the war is won not when all the singers are dead, but when Odium is defeated - the bigger of a wedge you can drive between the singers and odium, the easier that fight gets and the better the rebuilding afterwards would go. Not sure how this affects the eventual singer-human relations, but I think it does. Anyway, I totally didn't expect that - it certainly blindsided me, and I bet it's blindsiding everyone in-character as well (c.f. Dalinar). But once I think about it, it makes sense.

  7. Of the three Bondsmith spren -- The Nightwatcher, the Stormfather, and the Sibling -- it is generally accepted that the Nightwatcher is Cultivation's spren and the Stormfather is Honor's. However, recently this has struck me as a bit odd. We are told (via WoB) that the storm on Roshar, as well as the spren and the parsh people existed on Roshar pre-Honor's arrival. So shouldn't we expect that the Stormfather existed as the spren of the Storm before Honor arrived? Obviously the idea that the Stormfather being Honor's spren makes sense in the current times, now that Honor has given him extra power/sentience. However, do we actually have any evidence besides this that the Stormfather is actually his spren? Why couldn't Honor, in his last days, give this power to a different spren? That's why I'm starting to think that of the three, it is really the Sibling that was Honor's spren, and that the Stormfather is a tertiary spren (perhaps of Adonalsium, who presumably made the storm). Of the theory that the Sibling is Honor's spren we also have one other interesting point of evidence. We are told in WoR, that the Radiants built Urithuru where it is, rather than in Alethela, because they wanted it to be "closer to Honor". We also have a variety of evidence that the Sibling was fundamentally related to the tower itself. Perhaps the Sibling, being the spren of Honor, was located in the mountain of Urithuru (right next to the Cultivation's Valley, as seems fitting), and this is what the Radiants meant when they said they wanted it close to Honor -- that is, close to his spren. We also know, that during the time of the recreance, that the Sibling went to 'sleep' -- whatever that means. Whether this was due to the recreance itself, Melishi's (who I suspect was bonded to him) role in the capturing of Ba-Ado-Mishram, or, as this theory allows, due to Honor's own death, perhaps this was the reason Honor chose not to give a part of himself to the Sibling, and instead went with the Stormfather.

  9. Day 29, one of my most anticipated prompts: Shoes. This drawing features @Jaywalk's character of the same name, with Bozo the Voidrabbit. I really don't draw Jay enough, he's such a great character. The idea to have him be wearing bunny slippers is simply inspired and I am so, so, so glad I got the excuse to do it. It's funny, yesterday I said that I didn't want to do a full body drawing because the paper wan't big enough. And today I did a fully body drawing and barely fit it on the paper. Also, bunny drawing! It is exceptionally rare for me to draw animals and considering that, I am super happy with how Bozo looks. Never actually drawn him or Havel before, which... is honestly kinda sad. I'm super happy with how this turned out, it is some of my very best work. Oh, and the mug he's holding. It says, "SNARK: One of the many services I offer." I had like three other different phrases I could have used, (Including, "Silence is goldren, duct tape is silver," "It's never too early for sarcasm," and "Please cancel my subscription to your issues.") but this one just fit the best. I love sarcastic mugs, they are lovely and so so so Jay. The mug is also filled with liquid energy, a reference to this moment from CBST. One thing I was kind of unhappy about was the fact that the purple doesn't quite show up as well as I wanted it to. His eyes are purple and the liquid in the mug is purple too, but they just kinda look black. Oh, well, I guess. And here's the progression, this one looks super cool. I feel kinda bad, Bozo's scar didn't show up as well as I'd hoped.

  10. A hierarchical system does not become egalitarian overnight true but laws are passed overnight that attempt at changing that system. Mere declaration of abolition of slavery by Jasnah is not going to magically make the system egalitarian and slavery vanish. There will be resistance and there will be a lot of work afterwards to make it a reality. But it is a first step in that direction and a good one. Many such changes have happened in our world historically speaking by the passing of legislations first and then slow and reluctant acceptance by the society later. Take for example practice of untouchability in India, widow remarriage, women suffrage etc. I don’t know much about American history but did not one president with the declaration of his intention to remove slavery caused it to happen in all the country? Not earned how? Don’t you think that this issue has been addressed in twok and WoR. When a group of former slaves show extraordinary bravery, skill and character and save the prince and next in line to the throne of a kingdom and his army and earn freedom in doing so. When the same former slaves turn bodyguards to the king save his and family members lives number of times ( from assassin in white at that who no shardbearer had been able to stop as of then) when the same former slaves turn radiants and become unparalleled military power that humans have not seen in centuries and not only become instrumental in the humanity’s efforts against survival, but are the sole beacon of hope for winning if at all. It already, in-world, has put a big question mark and severely challenged the merits of the practice of slavery and underlying belief in the superiority of lighteyes over darkeyes that such system thrives on. Further, another major group of slaves, parshmen who were believed to be of sub human intelligence, have risen revolted against humanity in a war which for your average parshman is about slavery and their treatment thereof. They have also shown that they are not sub human, they are not unintelligent, they once belonged to a thriving civilisation in ways much more advanced than Rosharan civilisation of today. They have proved themselves to be military power again. Again challenging the belief that humans are superior to parshmen. All these events that have been happening in the books are about slavery and subjugation of one species by another ( not unlike racial discrimination of our world) and injustice of it and the fight against that Events have been happening but the dialogue that needs to happen due to these events has not happened yet. Or in-world amongst the scholars, the dialogue must be taking place but was not touched upon in OB. But now, one year later in RoW I am glad that this dialogue is going to be at the forefront with Jasnah spearheading the campaign against abolition of slavery.

  11. Having re-read both Mistborn and White Sand in close proximity, I’ve developed a theory. Although this theory mainly relates to the use of Bendalloy Compounding and Sand Mastery conjunctively, it could be expanded upon to include other topics of how the two most prominent Scadrian magic systems interact with Sand Mastery. Anyways, introduction out of the way, I’ll try to explain how to hack Sand Mastery via Compounding. First of all, I’ll try to explain Sand Mastery. At least, from how I understand it from reading the comics and researching on the Coppermind. Sand Mastery is an end negative result magic, maybe. To use this form of Investiture it requires both water from the body, and the presence of Kinetic Investiture. After using the sand however, the Sand Master becomes dehydrated, and the Kinetic Investiture stored in the sand is lost, meaning not only can the Sand Master risk death, but the sand itself has less Investiture than before. Next, I’ll explain Bendalloy. I’m sure we are all well aware of how it works Allomantically. A Bendalloy Misting creates a bubble of sped up time, quite simple. Though, Feruchemical Bendalloy is interesting in my opinion. A Ferring would be able to store both calories, and hydration, albeit in separate metal minds. So, if one compounded Bendalloy they would no longer need to eat or drink, as their metal minds would be able to sustain their need for calories and water. Now, we reach the cusp of my theory of how to achieve unlimited Sand Mastery. As we’ve already established, to use Sand Mastery, one must be hydrated. Though, if a Sand Master has the ability to Compound Hydration in a Bendalloy Metalmind, they would theoretically be able to fuel their Sand Mastery directly from that Metal Mind. This could lead to some interesting effects. For instance, we know a Feruchemist can draw out their stored attributes at different rates, so if a Bendalloy Twinborn Sand Master drew upon their hydration-mind, how would that affect their Sand Mastery, if it would affect it at all? Would they be able to control more ribbons? Or would it simply just affect the strength of their pre-existing ones? The real main benefit of this, however, is that a Sand Master who is also a Bendalloy Compounder would be able to endlessly Sand Master, as long as there is Invested Sand for them to manipulate. This leads me to the next part of my theory. As stated before, the Sand on the Dayside of Taldain is charged via exposure to Kinetic Investiture. In most cases this is in the form of the Sun of Taldain, though it has been stated that other forms of Kinetic Investiture would be able to fill that role, such as the Rosharan Highstorms, giving use to Sand Mastery across the Cosmere. This is one of the more uncertain parts of this theory, but by this principle, would the Kinetic Investiture released by Allomancy, in this case, Bendalloy Speed Bubble, be enough to recharge Taldainian Sand? If this is the case, the it appears that a Bendalloy Compounder would make the ultimate Sand Master. They would be able to limitlessly Sand Master via the use of Compounding hydration and recharge the Sand they expend via burning Bendalloy. Obviously this is only speculation, as we don’t know if the Kinetic Investiture of a Bendalloy bubble would be enough to re-Invest the Sand as the Sun or a Highstorm would, but I think there is some merit to this theory.

  14. So near the end of OB, we saw Jezrien getting stabbed and seemingly permanently killed. Many people wondered about the mechanism via which the knife worked and whether Jezrien was truly gone or had his soul captured so he couldn't reincarnate as Heralds were wont to do. The knife that Moash/Vyre used had a sapphire set into the pommel and the sapphire in question glowed during the deed. In the same book, we saw an Unmade getting trapped within a gemstone, so we knew that it was a strong possibility. People also noted the similarity with Hemalurgy. Of course people asked Brandon to confirm certain things: 1) Jezrien's soul was captured so it couldn't be reborn (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/377/#e12261) 2) The mechanism is similar to Hemalurgy (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/256/#e8665 , https://wob.coppermind.net/events/258/#e8774) 3) Sapphire, which is specifically linked with Jezrien and the Windrunners, was used specifically against Jezrien here (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/262/#e8798) And in chapter 14, we are told that the Fused could also be captured in gemstones: “They imprisoned some of the Unmade in these, Leshwi,” Raboniel said. “How close do you think they are to discovering they could do the same for us? Can you imagine it? Forever imprisoned in a gemstone, locked away, able to think but unable to ever break free?” A) So, Jezrien could still be rescued, reminding y'all just in case you forgot all about him. But in which case, so could Moelach.... (And may I remind you, they just chucked the gemstone he was imprisoned in into the ocean. And may I also remind you that Nazh was capable of retrieving Shallan's sketchbook from the bottom of the ocean after her ship sank) Hmm, I wonder... how was Re-Shephir imprisoned back then by some historical Lightweaver? Was she also captured in a gemstone? How'd she get out? B ) This mechanism might work against other Cognitive entities. It works with spren, Unmade, Fused, Heralds, so it might also work with the Returned or Divine Breath, with Seon & Skaze, with Shades (is that how Nazh's Shade gun worked? Heyyyyy... firespren flamethrower, anyone?) C) Sapphire was used against Jezrien, so was the King's Drop targeted because of this? Odium did say he was seeing to it as an additional safeguard for something unlikely to happen or something like that, iirc (could someone check?). Was there more to the King's Drop than just being a perfect gemstone? D) If the mechanism is similar to Hemalurgy, what happens if you, you know, go through the entire process? After the stealing comes the grafting. What would happen if Vyre's knife is stabbed into someone again? Would Jezrien take over their body, Fused style or possession style? Would they get some of Jezrien's attributes?

  17. Economics is going to go through something of an overhaul with the presence of Lightweavers and Elsecallers in society. Soulcasting is the backbone of the Alethi war machine and therefore the economy, and before now it's been a very bottlenecked business controlled by the Alethi government and Vorin church. Now, any random neighborhood darkeye could theoretically open up Bungo's Soulcasting Company, turning peoples' trash and extra rocks into food and lamp oil. If there was ever a time to take the drastic step of ending slavery, it's now, before everyone adjusts to the new world and slavery's still an essential part of it.

  23. I think it's an incorrect assumption to say that Shallan definitely has another secret in her past. I'm not saying it's impossible either. I just don't think it's a given that she either did something bad or had something bad happen to her in addition to what we saw in her WoR flashbacks. I personally think her remaining truth(s?) must be something about herself - her character. Not events that happened in her life. My personal opinion/guess is that the secret she struggles with is that her family was never as happy as she makes it out. I've been rereading the series leading up to OB and picked up on what I thought was an interesting piece of information. When Shallan talks with Wit as a child, he asks her to imagine the thing she wants most. After some prodding, she produces an image of her family all happy and healthy together - which implies that having a happy family is her greatest desire and her being a Lightweaver and Wit being Wit, it also implies that the idea of her family being happy is a lie. Shallan tells herself deep down that before she killed her mother, her family was happy and prosperous. She believes it was only after she killed her mother that things went bad. She believes that she is the one who caused her family's misfortunes. She hates herself for it. She blames everything on herself. She even tells Pattern that she hates herself in early OB. She completely defines herself in terms of her childhood trauma that she believes she caused. The secret (which isn't really a secret and was basically already revealed in WoR) is that her family was not happy even before her mother's death. Nothing was Shallan's fault - she didn't destroy her family. This isn't a secret from us, but it is a "secret" from Shallan herself. Something she won't allow herself to remember, because remembering it would change her entire identity and self image. I think we're being set up for it to be revealed in RoW. Her brothers are with her again. At some point, she'll reveal that she killed their mother. And then her brothers will say something like "Good riddance, she was even worse than Father." Hearing that will start her down the path of releasing her suppressed memories of life with her mother.

  24. This has basically nothing to do with the Skybreakers or Shinovar, but I randomly came up with the title Knights of Wrath and I love it. We already have Words of Radiance, which was an in world book about Surgebinders, but what if there was a book about Voidbinders? We don't really know much about Voidbinding other than it's connected to Odium and the Unmade, so we're probably going to have to learn more about it eventually. Odium basically just means hatred, so I think naming his "knights" after wrath is somehow fitting.

(Outside the Cosmere, Starsight and the third Legion book are both significantly worse than anything he's done in the Cosmere.) I've always rated Warbreaker pretty highly, and since it's available as a free download I've used it to get a lot of people into Brandon's work because it's such a good story.

  33. And criminals and slaves bought from abroad. Even that is dubious. Do you really want slaves to be loyal to you, but all owners to hate you? And whether people in low nahns would like to lose the only people even lower than them is hard to believe. And what will they do to criminals? Yes. This is correct. Yet economics works the same way. So what is the economy of slavery? How many slaves do they have? It seemed to me that slaves were reasonably common, but not overwhelmingly so. A few per cent of the population maybe.

  34. In Oathbringer, we're shown how Jasnah's father crafted this kingdom she now rules through conquest and blood. Gavilar was a warlord, Elhokar was a warlod, and now Jasnah is a warlord. Where do you think these slaves Jasnah wants to free came from? They're the people Gavilar conquered. This is the kind of argument that I'm amenable to, because it's based in the work and its world and treats the established premises with respect. What I'm not amenable to is the argument that we ended slavery in our world therefore they need to end slavery in their world. One of the nice things about these books is the strange, foreign, fantastical setting. I'm protective of that, because this is not our world, and their values need not match our values, and that's OK. Their values should be foreign and strange. Scadrial is the Earth analogue in the Cosmere. Let these other worlds have their own room to breathe.

  35. I think that if Jasnah just stopped slavery legally, we'll see lighteyes and Highprinces institute version of serfdom on their lands. Released slaves will just be put into menial labor for 16 hours a day with horrible wages, part of which they'll use to pay taxes. Even Jasnah won't be able to solve the nation's labor issues with a proclamation or an edict just a few years after it lost its supply of cheap labor.

  36. 100% this. Jasnah is my least favourite part of SA, and I was quite annoyed when she turned out to not be dead. Aes Sedai all the way, and I had enough Aes Sedai thinking they knew best and not storming *sharing* important information when I read WoT. Also don’t particularly like Renarin, but trying to withhold more judgement there. He was much better in WoK prime (as was Jasnah actually, probably just because we got to see in her head and she wasn’t being all “I know best but I’m not telling you louts anything useful.”)

  38. Which is not how the book has presented it. Litteraly the first we hear about it is Dalinar ousbing against the idea. This indicates Jasnah has to fight for it. I would possibly understand this complaint of the books hadnt shown significant social chsnge already and if it was a throw away line that there are no slaves. Instead the books show several social changes (men can read, eye colour significents changing, women fighting and queen etc etc) and they also show Jasnah raising the idea and even Dalinar opposes her. Also people have in this very thread called the argument that slavery is bad stupid hence I will also disagree that noone is saying slavery isnt evil.

  39. I didnt realise that Jasnah was a roving warlord through her own lands and so this line of reasing holds no water when evaluating why Jasnah would want to free the Alethi slaves. Also Jasnahs suggestion is not to kill the slaves, she wants to free and pay them for their labour, the labour will still be there. Ahh so its stupid to think slavery is bad, exain to me how its not because so far your only argument is warlords and free labour both of which are not very sound arguments. And yes War is bad, this is why just about every country currently tries to negotiate peace first, because war is one of the most terrible things that can take place. Bad and necissary often go hand in hand, however, war is often necissary against an oppressor not for the oppressor (see slavery) I never implied, nor has the books, that this change would haooen over night. Infact changes to the strict heirachy have been happening from the start, Kaladin a dark eyes was unofficially engaged to a light eyes, he was put in charge of the kings guard and out side the command structre. Dalinar is learning to read, there are female radiants. All of these things upend the perfext heirachial system and have been happening for as long as the books. Doesnt feel earned how? Because the first we see of it is Dalinar fighting Jasnah over it, or because of all the changes weve seen through the books of scocietal change? But sure its a cheap morality play...

  40. I don't think the rumors are true (as in like, 99% sure they aren't true), but even if they are that wouldn't preclude Jasnah being bisexual or pansexual (or even asexual, as someone who is asexual can still be in a relationship with someone else). [I am assuming "hereto" is supposed to be "heterosexual" in this case]

  42. The notion of the Fused swearing oaths is ridiculous since the shard of Honor has dominion over oaths and they are literally opposed to Honor. The idea that Odium would put oaths into the Fused would be contradictory to everything we know about him.

  43. I think it's natural such rumors would exist given how much time they likely spend together. Add to it that we as readers have a perfectly good explanation of what they're really doing (talking about Serious Things) and it's an obvious wink to the readers through a less informed narrator. Same as Adolin and Shallan wondering what Nalthis and Scadrial are without ever getting even close.

  44. Yeah good call. That's what I thought of too. I hope the Mink isn't double-crossing them. I guess since his wife and child were killed in a war with Alethkar (or implied to have) he has a lot of hate in him and motive to hurt Dalinar. RoW Ch. 16: He did withstand the Singers onslaught surprisingly well. Maybe a little too well. Like they've been building him up as this great general, when they are letting him live and get minor victories to increase his reputation. I'm hoping he's a secret radiant or something and not a villain. It is his idea to attack, but it's based on troop movements. This could be a coordinated thing between the Mink and the Fused. I hope not though.

  45. I hear it, but I'm not sure that I buy it. Odium from all accounts despises Hoid and would very much like to destroy him. I doubt that Odium would cut him any deal at all. If I were Odium and Hoid offered me a deal. He would not be able to finish before I smote him into oblivion.

  47. I don't think Kaladin's viewpoint has been repetitive at all. Yes, he's been depressed the whole time but his inner struggle has gone from denial, to anger, to acceptance in a way that's been very satisfying and relatable to me personally. His character hasn't stagnated at all this book imo, it's actually grown more in these chapters than in all of OB in my opinion. It's also been apparent to me since book 2 that there was more to Shallan's early past than anything to do with her mother's death, this was hinted at in the flashback scene with Hoid. Then all throughout OB Pattern brought this up. Seems pretty well set up to me narratively as well as realistically, as one of the biggest symptoms of DID is amnesia. But that's just my opinion. We'll have to see how this all goes in the full book, especially the Shallan stuff.
