  1. Okay. Story time! I've always thought it'd be really cool to write a piece of fiction, or (dare I say it) a book. Obviously, I don't have the experience or knowledge for anything too drastic, but there's been this idea floating around in my head for a while. I keep telling myself I don’t need to perfect it, just start writing and let my brain belch out everything that’s going on inside of it. The details can come later. So, when I came across the 50-word Fiction thread, I knew what I had to do. Here’s what I wrote! I know there’s not a whole lot of context, but thoughts? Comments? Sky The small boat drifts forward. Ripples flow to either side. Above, the endless sky. And below… the endless sky. A cloud floats downwind, churning on the air’s surface. She watches it, head resting on arms. Her eyes stray from the cloud… down, down, down, to the seething tempest below. Infinity.

  7. Who: The Heralds did it. How: They all used the surges each of the 10 had access to in order to send destructive magic from west to east. Who "They blame our people For the loss of that land ...Our gods were not who shattered these plains" WoR Ch. 26 Epigraph It wasn't our gods (Fused) who did it, it was yours (Heralds). Fused are the Listener gods, reincarnating cognitive shadows. The Listeners would view the Human equivalent, the Heralds, as the Humans gods. The Heralds were incredibly powerful, the Honorblades with Honor still alive allowed the to Surgebind constantly because they had a never ending stream of investiture to draw from and they didn't have the progression of Oaths capping their powers like the KR do, as far as we know. The Heralds were also growing increasingly unstable emotionally and mentally. I think it went like this: Humans had taken Stormseat as their own for a long time, in one of the Desolations the Fused took it back and instead of a protracted siege or massive battle to retake the city, the Heralds decided "Storm it! We'll destroy it entirely instead of wasting resources retaking it". How Any number or combination of Surges could have done the damage we see. It's possible for Illumination to be used as a laser in battle https://wob.coppermind.net/events/309/#e11554 I think each of the Heralds ramped the surges they had access to up to maximum power and unleashed them. When Kaladin dreams he's the storm in WoK he thinks the plains look like something heavy hit them at the center and it broke outward like a plate being punched. That makes as much sense as anything, but that's not where the impact craters are: "The western edge is ringed by ten circular craters.[4] "https://coppermind.net/wiki/Shattered_Plains 10 craters, one for each Herald to unleash something devastating that converged on Stormseat and then continued east to the coast. I didn't draw all the lines of destruction because it would be a mess and I'm just guessing on their direction, but you get the idea.

  11. It’s… been a year. Wowza, that shot by fast. It’s probably fate, then, that decided that it’d be fun to make me have a writer’s block right now. I’m not going to tag anybody… but then again, I might tag everybody. I’m not sure; I’m writing this ahead of time. I’m worried that if I tag people, I’ll inevitably forget somebody, and that’d be a sad thing. Heck; the Shard might not let me tag everyone, and we all know how feisty the status-update-editing algorithm is (I.E. it does not exist). There are definitely some things I need to address separately, so by using the POWER OF SPOILER BOXES, I can categorize stuff! 13. We’ve heard from Syl that the windspren are cousins to the honorspren. We’ve also seen tons of examples of windspren circling around Kaladin. Strangely, this even happened once in the cognitive realm. We’ve also seen gloryspren Circle Dalinar when he opened the perpendicularity. And now we see emerald and rhythms empowering lifespren to enhance the growth of plants. I believe that there is one particular cousin spren for every radiant spren, and that cousin spren serves multiple purposes. The radiant spren, while unintelligent in the physical realm without a bond, will spend time around the same things as the cousin spren, and with other cousin spren. Cousin spren will encircle the radiant during certain important moments. The radiant can turn nearby cousin spren into Shardplate. For example a windrunner’s Shardplate would be made of ten windspren. Doing something like dismissing only the helm would dismiss only one of the cousin spren. And I think each gemstone, when given the right rhythm, will only empower the cousin spren of the order that gemstone is associated with. So for example a sapphire would empower windspren, probably making a windy area. Here’s what I think each of the cousin spren could be: Bondsmith: gloryspren Windrunner: windspren Edgedancer: lifespren Lightweaver: creationspren (how many times have we seen Shallan attract an abnormal amount of these?) Stoneward: groundspren Here are some cousin spren that I’m less sure about: Dustbringer: decayspren Elsecaller: logicspren Even less sure: Skybreaker: starspren (both they and highspren appear in the sky?) Truthwatcher: concentrationspren (this is another scholar order) Finally, what I’m reduced to guessing about: Willshapers. All I’ve got is captivityspren, which is kind of opposite. Thoughts?

  22. Well, for one you could try and verify whether Jasnah's telling you the truth, or whether she's just trying to destabilize your country. What's more likely - that Parshmen are secretly the voidbringers of legend and are about to all magically tranform into demons? Or that the storming Alethi are trying to stir up trouble again? ...yeah, unless you know you're in book 2 of a fantasy epic, the latter is gonna seem a heck of a lot more likely until the info is independently verified by someone with no connection to the warmongering Kholins.

  25. I think Kaladin firmly being into good guys camp in the beginning of the 4th book out of 5 total more or less solidify his "good guy" status. Its too late to make him bad guy without making it look like a "WTF" moment. He may side with Singers but surely not in expense of the lives of Dalinar, Shallan, Adolin, Bridge 4, many others good Alethi. I cant seem him killing humans he knows or battling them. His whole concept is the soldier who values the lives of people before anything else. Even if he will side with Venli group (and i feel its in the range of possibility by the end of RoW) he wont be an Odium's champion. He will try to unify Singers and Humans regardless of what camp he belongs to and that goes against Odium's goals.

  29. Hi all, As many of you already know, we are a community that has a propensity towards nitpickiness and pedantry. This behavior is to be expected when talking canonicity and mechanics and we generally encourage it in these types of conversations. However, one place it's not as welcome is when it comes to fan art. Comments about a piece of fan arts canonicity or accuracy are generally unhelpful, inconsiderate and unwelcome, as all fan art is an intepretation of the text. Pointing out where your interpretation and the artists interpretation differs is, at best, unneeded and, at worst, callous and dismissive. A regular complaint we hear from artists who have been turned off by the 17th Shard community is that we are overly critical in regards to lore complaints and unwelcoming to interpretation or more abstract artstyles. This obviously does not apply to artists who request critique, but due to the above, this is now our policy: Please keep in mind that fanart criticism is unwelcome when unsolicited. When commenting on a piece, please keep the artists feelings in mind as we would like to keep this welcoming space for all artists. Comments contrary to this policy will be deleted. We want the Fan Works area to be safe area for any artist.

  32. I posted this comment in an old thread, and I was told that it's better to start a new topic in such a case, than revive an old thread. So I've just gotten to the point with my pre-ROW reread (the Dalinar flashbacks about the sacking of the Rift), and once again, I'm baffled by this conundrum. There was a discussion about why Sadeas was or wasn't really in league with Tanelon, or was he really just framed. So why Sadeas DIDNT do it: Sadeas was loyal at this point, presumably he still considered Dalinar a friend, and even if he wished to move against Gavilar or Dalinar, it makes no sense to do it this way. Joining one fledgling highprince against Gavilar is foolish, and the idea of Sadeas being loyal to Gavilar is rocksolid. Now he could have wished to move against Dalinar for multiple reasons, but having him killed in a battle/ambush is a bit strange, and very risky. Tanelon did hate the Kholins and it makes sense he just wanted Dalinar dead at all cost, and framing one of their closest allies in the process just fits the bill. Why Sadeas DID do it: There is a traitor highprince, this is confirmed by multiple sides. There isnt anyone else there, or even mentioned before/after the events. It makes no sense (narratively) that an unnamed off-screen highprince was supporting the Rift, who then gave up on the idea. I guess Tanelon could have started this rumor himself, which gotten to Gavilar's ears as valuable information from a trusted spy, but that s a bit convoluted, plus what was his endgame, if he had no allies in this? Coax the Kholins into an attack, maybe kill Dalinar with the ambush and then... die or at least get conquered again? Sadeas arrived early. Dalinar says this when he's limping back to camp after the ambush and thinks it good fortune. It's a bit convenient that Sadeas arrives early, moments after Dalinar's supposed demise, to take control of the armies and make an example out of the rebels, what he advocated for from the start, but Gavilar refused, and seemingly Dalinar was unwilling to do either. Sadeas's viewpoint was reinforced multiple times in the flashbacks, starting from the early day, right up to the beginning of the siege and during. Make an example, slaughter cruelly, because that sends the right message, and means less trouble down the road. Dalinar has a change of heart even during the sacking of the Rift, before he finds out about Evi, he wants to send the stand-down order, but Sadeas tells him there's no way, he already set fire to the city from the other end as well, and shot down any who could flee with archers. He was really committed to not leaving any loose ends. There are supposed traitor scouts in Dalinar's army, bribed by Tanelon, who helped setting up the ambush. Ok, sure, it's possible, Dalinar ran a good army, and Tanelon wasn't very strong or influential, but these things can happen still. But what happens to them? Sadeas reports to Dalinar upon his arrival at camp, that they've already been dealt with "we bribed one to turn on the others, and executed the rest". Ok, that's suspicious AF, Sadeas concluding the investigation instantly, by bribing one and executing all the rest. I should think you'd want to find out how and when they've gotten turned, who are their contacts, torture them for information and punishment. Bribing one, then instant execution of the rest seems like serves one purpose, cover his tracks. Sadeas was in a much better position to get to a unit in the Kholin army, than Tanelon. When Dalinar admits to Sadeas that he fell for the "trick" and believed Sadeas could be the traitor, Sadeas seemingly tries to reassure him, saying that he thought Dalinar could turn on Gavilar. So there is the motivation. Sadeas was loyal, but only to Gavilar. He liked Dalinar well enough, but he was a rival and getting stronger, and he was afraid not only that his own position with Gavilar is overshadowed, but that Gavilar himself might be attacked by Dalinar, or hurt in some other way. Other tidbit: The throwaway comment about the rockslide, and Gavilar naming Sadeas as one of the potential employers of the Assassin in White in the prologue. So what did I miss? Are there WOBs about the Rift? Could the "bribed" scout be alive, the one who actually knows what happened? EDIT: typos and phrasing

So you make a Forgery to the effect that orders were mixed up and you got a large box. Should be rather simple. Your cute family pet "Fluffy", who fits snugly into the larger box climbs into it. You destroy the soulstamp. What happens now? Does it involve pet juice, remorse, traumatized children and a divorce?

  34. If the possibility of revival exists, it wouldn't be as easy as developing a relationship and swearing new oaths. Brandon has said that deadeye spren have serious damage, a piece of their spiritual being is literally missing and would have to be replaced. I know it's sort of a meme, but I don't think Adolin "filling the gaps" in a reverse Nahel bond is really plausible because the bonds don't really work that way, spren are fundamentally different from humans, I seriously doubt the roles could be so easily interchanged. I do think Maya will be revived, but it would have to be through some means that are either so specific or difficult that there would basically be no reason to unless you really wanted to revive a spren for whatever reason.

  35. Interesting idea... However, I support the theory that Detritus is a delver corpse. It would make sense because of the caverns. These are like the tunnels that delver mazes have, except without the illusions because the delver/planet is dead. Also, the symbols Spensa saw in the Delver maze were apparently the same ones she saw in the caverns on Detritus.

  38. Instead of an error, I view this as Vasher changing his thinking over time. His original categories were based solely on awakening standards. Now he's had time to incorporate the greater realmatics into his categories. Also, we see him referring to himself as not a real person. Now, he may have believed this back in Warbreaker and never said it, but working on the assumption that this is a new idea for him (as in came about after Warbreaker). This would make him more inline with a spren than a person with a real soul, which would lead to pulling all forms of investiture life forms into this categorization efforts.

  40. I thought I had taught myself better. I honestly believed that I was done writing dumb wishful fantasies about my favorite characters. Harry Potter killing Voldemort in the most gruesome way my seven-year-old mind could concoct? Those days are behind me. An extended backstory for Breath of the Wild? Begone, thought. One would think that by now I would know better than to write something about the Knights Radiant, Mistborns, Wax n' Wayne duo, ReForgers, Elantrians, and the like teaming up on Odium to defeat him. One would think. And yet, here I am, unable to help myself. So this is probably going to take several posts to make, but that's fine. I've convinced myself that posting irregularly would help ease my conscience. If y'all think this is all just really childish and stupid, then that's fine by me. Heck, I think this is all just really childish and stupid. But I'm doing it anyway. Here it is: “So let me get this straight.” Waxillium said. “This is the Well of Ascension?” It was a little underwhelming. “Well,” he could understand. What he was looking at was probably the most well-like thing he had seen for awhile. “Ascension?” Not so much. “I can understand your confusion.” The man who called himself the Survivor said. Less a man, that was, and more a spirit. He certainly did match the descriptions given in Lestibournes’s texts, however. “Ruin’s power was moved from here, and therefore seems a little lackluster. However, it still works as a Perpendicularity to the Cognitive realm; for up to two people, I believe.” Wayne nudged Wax in the shoulder. “What’s your imaginary friend saying?” Wax turned to the Survivor. “I’m afraid my friend has no direct means of contacting you. What should I tell him…?” “Tell him that you two must take this to the cognitive realm, head to Roshar, and defeat Odium.” Waxillium frowned. “That seems very… specific.” “It is a specific battle that you are fighting now, Waxillium Ladrian.” The Survivor said. “I’m afraid that if Odium retrieves any more Shards that he may become unstoppable.” “I still don’t understand what’s happening.” Wax replied. “There is only so much I can describe.” The Survivor said. “Just head to Roshar. It might already be too late.” Waxillium nodded. “Alright, then.” “Um, excuse me?” Wayne nudged Wax again. “You can’t just make decisions for me, Wax.” “I thought you said you didn’t like making decisions.” “Well, I don’t, but you can’t make my decisions without my knowing about what you’re even deciding me to do!” Wayne pled. “Besides, I need to know what hat to take. Lucky hat or fedora?” “Lucky hat, most definitely.” The Survivor said. Wax frowned. “What…?” “Hats are very helpful. Especially lucky ones.” Wax turned to Wayne. “Well, according the the rusting Survivor himself, you should take your lucky hat.” “Lucky hat it is!” Wayne plopped on the headwear. “When’re we going?” Suddenly, from the caves that Waxillium had entered to get here, a man barreled towards them. “I found it! I found it, I found it, I found it!” “What the—” Wax stuttered. The man shoved Waxillium out of the way as he ran. “Move, fools! Allomancer Jak has come to claim his Birthright!” “Excuse me?” The man shoved Wayne out of the way, as well, who immediately scowled and grabbed for him, stumbling towards the Well as he missed. The man leaped into the Well, thrusting his arms upwards like some kind of priest. The Survivor scowled. “Get that man out of there before the Perpendicularity—” The Well burst alight, and the man fell over into the gaseous pool. Wayne was not over his mistreatment just yet, however, and leapt into the pool of light after him. “Wayne, wait!” Wax yelled, but was too late. The light of the pool began to fade, and with it the hopes of a successful mission. Wax found himself staring into the Well, empty despite the two personages that had been inside it just moments before. “What in the name of the Lord Ruler just happened?” The Survivor demanded. Wax shuddered on the ledge of the Well. “I think… I think that you might be stuck with the wrong allomancer for awhile.” His best friend, Wayne, had just sealed the fate of the Cosmere, by taking Allomancer Jak with him to defeat a god.

  41. I see them more as the Cosmere Illuminati, a secret society obsessed with power that is Machiavellian in their unrestrained willingness to do whatever they need to achieve their aims. I would imagine that on Shardworlds other than Roshar, where possible, they are likewise exercising their power to achieve their ends. Their motivations are surely more than merely economic, why would they truck with such fell forces as the Unmade if they are only interested in mere economic renumeration. Just as Investiture is convertible into energy and matter, power is a commodity that is also convertible (reversibly as well) into money and opportunity. Especially after Mraize's speech during the Aviar hunting the mole scene, they seem like an organization that takes a wider view of affairs, and they have larger farther reaching aims. Like Hoid, I believe the Ghostbloods are willing to watch Roshar burn to achieve their objectives. But unlike Hoid, I believe they are willing to make Roshar burn if that achieves their objectives, which surely are greater than a just a mafia style criminal energy concern. To say that Investiture in a raw form is just energy is to ignore that it can also be converted to matter as well. It is power, distilled, contained (and if housed in perfect gems), storable until it's needed. The Ghostbloods most likely recognize that it has applications far more numerous and useful than just running Scadrial Air Conditioners or Rosharan heatrials. To take the real world analogy of crude oil, it's a limited view to say that this promethean substance is merely something to refine into high octane gasoline for running engines. It's also a precursor to the essential petro-chemicsl supply chain. Most varieties of commercial plastics have as an input of their production crude oil, the utility of the commodity is not uni-dimensional. Energy is itself an abstract commodity, and so serves somewhat as a stand-in for a subset of what raw Investiture could do. How handily the Ghostbloods eliminated Thanadal and Ialia shows that they are competent in the extreme. We know that they recruited Iyatil from the 17th Shard, and Mraize's trophy case shows they have ranged far across the Cosmere, so it's safe to infer that they are active in the wider Cosmere. I think we might see subtle signs of their machinations when we finally get The Lost Metal and the War Breaker sequel, and I am excited to see the conflict that I believe is building between the Ghostbloods and the Sleepless in Era 4.

  43. I find it totally logical if Gavilar has such ambitions. And I think that it is possible to collect shards and splinters of Honor and unite them to become Honor's vessel. I only think that Gavilar's way is the wrong one. You should not begin with wanting the power. It's difficult to unite all the pieces of Honor without a hint of honorable intent. For a while now I have thought a lot about what we actually know about Gavilar. I did not have a very good impression of him, but after Navani's prologue, it becomes much clearer. Gavilar did not unite Alethkar. Dalinar did. And the latter got all the bad stuff, the PTSD, the bully reputation, the dead wife, The cast out status. Gavilar took the crown, the glory and the power. And Navani. Gavilar was a little more brave than Sadeas, but when I study the battle scenes where Dalinar fights together with Gavilar or Sadeas, the two latter always send Dalinar in first. And afterwards they collect most of the honor and the "stuff" for the victory. Gavilar actually is using his little brother as you use a trained dog to attack intruders. And you give the dog a bone and a pat afterwards. And shoot him if he cannot guard you any longer. When Dalinar succumbed to his PTSD, drowning himself i alcohol, there is little understanding from his big brother. He once told Adolin that his father would pull through, as he was a soldier and able to fight his problems, but he also tried to prevent Dalinar from getting more alcohol, and made fun of his brother. It really strikes me that Gavilar never actually cares about his brother's situation, just about how others will think about the brother of the king being a drunkard. The only one that really understands, is ironically Jezrien, or Ahu, the former greatest human on earth. Also broken. We now know that Gavilar was a bully towards his wife, the queen. Petty, jealous, and afraid for his reputation. He did not so much care if Navani possibly had been unfaithful, only what the court was saying about it behind his back. It is obvious that Gavilar is a less admirable person than Dalinar. Even though Dalinar did most of the murdering. There is something very honorable in Dalinar, and honor can be used by others. Gavilar can exploit Dalinar's honorable intent because Dalinar realizes that he would never take his brother's place, because it is not the right thing to do.. Even though he knows that he would have been a better king than his big brother. Then Dalinar quenches his conscience with overwhelming help from the thrill, because he must not set his will up against the King. The King decides what to do and whom to kill. Dalinar just obeys. Dalinar does not want to participate in the war planning meetings. Why? Because he is no good at or not interested in war tactics and strategy? We know that to be untrue. So, I think that Dalinar unconsciously was not all that keen to conquer and kill just to win glory and power for his brother. But Gavilar does not care, as long as he gets what he wants. So, where do I go with this? I think that everything I know about Gavilar tells me he is a person who does everything to get to the top. He wants more power. If there is someone above him, he wants to take their position. You are the mightiest person on Roshar? Oh yes, but there are Gods. A little like Jafar in the Disney Aladdin movie. But I also think that is where Gavilar miscalculated. Because I think you cannot collect all the splinters of Honor without honorable intent. And I think that Dalinar has been sort of honorable all his life. Despite the fact that he has been posessed by the Thrill. It seems that Dalinar has come a long way in his Honor collection. Without the greed for a powerful position, but with the ambition to save the world and make peace.
