  1. Wow thank you for all your comments, I appreciate it! And I call it a trashbook because its just a cheapo $4 sketchbook that i goof off in. Its so much easier to have a cheap sketchbook because there's no pressure to make everything look amazing. Makes it a lot more comfortable to experiment in. So! CosmereInktober is underway, and I've waited a few days to post here so I don't spam my sketch thread! 1. FLY 2. RIBBON 3. SQUAT 4. RHYTHM

  4. So I am taking CS 124 right now. This is the intro level computer science class at BYU-I, and we were learning about Boolean logic, and with logic thrown in the mix you have to make a whole new order of operations. Basically PEMDAS is no longer valid. Instead it goes parentheses, increment/decrement, not, multiply/divide/modulo, addition/subtraction, greater than/less than, equality, and, or, assignment. The acronym PIDNMDMASGLEAOA is not quite as short, so they just made categories, and you memorize which categories go before which other ones. It sounds scarily similar to the first ideal, so I decided to post it here. I hope this helps out any of my fellow Sanderfans who need to remember the order of operations for Boolean logic.

  7. Yeah, sorry, I forgot to do day two and three, had to catch up on day four, but I didn't have time to upload until now : Day 2: Ribbon I made a windspren in the form of a ribbon for Fred. He is riding it somehow. Day 3: Squat Vin is indeed squatting, but I realized after I drew her squatting that the mistcloak would cover it, and then the mistcloak made it really ambiguous, so.... yeah. And Fred is present, you just have to find him! Day 4: Rhythm The idea was of Eshonai teaching Fred rhythms, but it turned out really bad. Can't say I didn't warn y'all: Day 5: Heavenly I am actually quite proud of this one, comparative to my other ink drawings. I free hand, and I was surprised how not horrible the mist turned out. So it's a mistborn flying in the night over the mists (with Fred on his shoulder)

  8. Day five: Blade. This drawing is of Xino holding the Spear of Light. This plot happened in the 800's on TLT, but I don't have a specific quote for it. Funny story actually, I was looking for a quote for the prompt "Throw" in that area on TLT 'cause there's a part where Sophie throws that spear. I spent literally hours searching until I ended up using another part from that section of TLT for an entirely different prompt. I am pretty darn happy with this one except for the fact that, for the first time in my entire art career, I made the head too small. But. I think the drawing's strengths outshine its faults. Especially the blue highlights, those are a nice touch. Plus I get to show off how I've learned to shade gold which is super fun. See you tomorrow with some new art! Here's the gesture, I think it's cute.

  15. This weekend at WorldCon, someone asked Brandon about the historicity of The Girl Who Looked Up: I noticed three key differences in the versions: Shallan's message is that we're monsters; Hoid's mesage is that failures make us greater Hoid's version says there was no light before, only starlight Shallan says Stormlight; Hoid says God's Light Shallan says the wall was destroyed; Hoid says the storms "boiled over" the wall Recognizing the difference in morals is essential in approaching the basis of the legend. The story isn't about either; it can, however, be made to be about one or the other. But if we're going to examine the story as a retelling of events, even a mythological retelling, it doesn't have to be a word of warning or an admonition of strength. Looking at the similarities (the presence of storms, the existence of a wall, going from Lightless to Light), we can guess that there is some historical basis for the story, regardless of how it's used. And with the revelations at the end of OB for Humans as Voidbringers, I think it's pretty clear that the story is connected in some way to that context. So, let's contrast Hoid's story with Shallan's to try to figure out some details; I'm going to assume the differences highlight what Hoid says, and that he'll have the more faithful account. The Differences The "land of shadows" is explicitly called out by the text as something Shallan didn't know about, but that made the whole story make more sense. Like how people didn't know there was a wall; it was because they actually couldn't see it. Hoid mentions people seeing by starlight, which I think will throw the Domed Shinovar theory into the garbage before I can even articulate it. This darkness must be metaphorical; the Wall isn't physically the mountains that protect Ashyn, it just happens to be a parallel. In the context of the story, I don't think they had the sun on the other side of the wall, either; their lives were illuminated by God's Light normally, and the experience of the people inside the wall changed to match that. There's no event in the story that grants people sunlight; their hypothetical options would be Storms and Light, or Safety and Darkness. That's why I say the story is metaphorical, though much of the metaphor was drawn from the very real events of humanity venturing out of their appointed lands. "Stormlight" vs "God's Light" is another key difference. There are a lot of gods in the Cosmere, but who would Hoid call God? His point of view in the Elantris 10th Anniversary scene implies that Hoid believes in the God Beyond. And the end of WoR, he has a conversation with Jasnah where he says Tanavast wasn't God, and that she'll "find God in the same place you're going to find salvation from this mess. Inside the hearts of men." If he shares the views of Frost, who calls Odium "God's own divine hatred," then there would be a connection to Adonalsium there. This ties in with the metaphorical nature I highlighted in the last paragraph; the story is a metaphor for something going on in the hearts of men, about something bigger than a migration to a new planet. The last difference makes me wonder what the Wall represents. Shallan's story changes the nature of the world, through the destruction of the Wall allowing the existing storms to break through. Hoid's changes the nature of the Storms, where they now boil over the Wall, but the Wall isn't destroyed. I think this ascribes some sort of intelligence to whatever is represented by the Storms; it now enters where it did not, not because the obstacles are deeper, but because someone took its Light there, and now it continues to return there to replenish that Light. This isn't an act of Man; it's an act of God. The Religious Allegory As a pretty religious individual, I'm seeing heavy parallels to Christianity throughout this story, highlighted by the differences listed above. The girl stealing Light, but bringing Storms, is very reminiscent of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit in Eden. They received knowledge of Good and Evil, but they also received the curse of mortality. Since then, the message of Christianity is not returning to the Innocence of Eden, but moving forward to a new kind of Glorification; not going back, but pressing onward. That's the same thing we see in this story; life was fundamentally altered, this is what made things the way they are now, and there's no going back. God's Light is also a concept that appears in real-world religions. Some books of the Bible, 1 John in particular, use Light as a metaphor for God's Truth, or specifically the Scriptures. It's not pleasant to be under the scrutiny of God's Light, but it does reveal areas of sin in our lives. That's extremely similar to what the Light did in the story here; it made life harder for humanity, but they're not going back to when they were blissfully in darkness. The Storms boiling over, instead of the Wall falling down, also reminds me of a key aspect of Jesus' teachings. Man doesn't attain to reconciliation with God; God, through the person and works of Jesus Christ, reached down to accomplish that reconciliation. That's why I said above that the Storms reaching over the Wall isn't because the Girl's actions brought the Wall down; it's because God now sends his Storms across the wall. So, why do I sound like Billy Graham, rattling off all this Christianity? It's to hammer home that this is not about the physical exodus of humans from their appointed place on Roshar; Hoid's story makes me think it's something bigger than that. I don't think it's how they stole spren and Surges on Roshar, either. The humans had Investiture, they had Surges, on Ashyn before it was broken. It's not just that they lived in a place without Stormlight, without that particular brand of Light; they were in a place with no Light at all. I think the story is about the way humans first came into Investiture. (Using the term to mean "magic" here; yes, Investiture comprises everything, but this is referring to the magical, the supernatural, the very reason this is a fantasy series.) There was a time when Humans were apart from God, and didn't have Investiture; but something changed, and someone took Investiture, and their actions spread to the rest of humanity. Something great, something terrible, and something that could never be undone. The version of this story that grew on Roshar took influence from their history with the Singers; parallels of humanity stealing something is not hard to find within our own world, and it is the same in the cosmere. The White Hair There is one very important clue that is in Shallan's version, but not in Hoid's. Shallan, without realizing why, made the girl's hair white at one point in the story. But she always called her a girl; never said she became an old woman. White hair, on someone who's not old, has always been a mark of Hoid. I think this is a story about Hoid, about what he did to change the very way humanity interacted with Investiture. Hoid, as an architect of the Shattering. The version of this story on Roshar may have become about a girl, but I think the original inspiration for that girl was none other than our mysterious worldhopper. Hoid asked a very peculiar question of Shallan during his telling of it: Hoid is certainly not a child who stayed out of the woods, and he's at the crux of all the Cosmere stories. Imagine that he is asking Shallan what she thinks about him, about what he did to help prepare for the Shattering. He ultimately did not take a Shard, but he could have been one of them, and they all know who he is. He calls himself bold, for seeking to take the power of Adonalsium. And he calls himself stupid, for unleashing the Shards upon the cosmere. In Conclusion Yes, the historical context of the story makes it clear that this version was developed after the humans arrived on Roshar, and it draws much of its setting from the way humans took the planet, the spren, and the Storms from the Singers. But there's also a deeper meaning, from a time before the humans had a God, before they had any Light, before they had Investiture, before they had Shards. They took the Light, they killed their God and took His power upon themselves, and the universe has never been the same since. But none are willing to go back to how it was before, to give up their Light.

  18. I don't think they will be doing much in Stormlight 4 and 5. Brandon even confirmed that Taln and Ash don't have any PoVs in RoW. We will probably see Nale again, if not in RoW than for sure in book 5, for Szeth's storyline, but other than that I think it'll be just minor roles and hints that will all be expanded on in the second arc. Brandon said in the past that the second arc of Stormlight will deal much more with the heralds, and we'll have two books of heralds flashbacks. I expect that whatever ending book 5 will be and whenever the second arc opens, it will have a connection to the Heralds in a way that will make their backstory even more relevant to the conflict than the first arc is.

  21. I discussed this in the general reaction thread as well, but I want to make a topic of it. This last chapter has me even more convinced that Sebarial is a Ghostblood. Evidence: 1. The Ghostbloods meeting-place. It was in Sebarials warcamp, back in WoR. 2. Mraizes latest outfit was a Sebarial guard-uniform. 3. Sebarial was building himself a small merchant-empire in WoR. We now learned from Mraize that the Ghostblood objective is to become investiture-salesmen. Sebarial, who is commercially interested, would defenitely be a guy who could involve himself with something like that. 4. Sebarial puts up an act to hide how shrewd he really is. This aligns well with how much acting he would have to do in order to hide his leadership of a criminal organization consisting of brutal murderers and ambitious salesmen. 5. Sebarial joined Dalinar to fight the Parshendi in WoR. While we know Aladars and Roions reasoning for joining (it was the right/honorable thing to do), Sebarial just said that it would be interesting. An opportunistic and shrewd character like Sebarial would not join such a risky expedition just for shits and giggles. He suspected that there would be an Oathgate at Narak and wanted to be there when it was found. What do you think? Could Sebarial be Thaidakar?

  22. TL;DR All magics that draw from external sources function via bonds with entities made of Investiture (generally Spiritual or Cognitive beings). Magics that do not draw from external sources seem to possibly not do so, however (although I believe they still might). Do note that this sometimes uses a very liberal version of the word "bond", but it is based on what Brandon has defined it as. If you would like, you may mentally replace "bond" with "the underlying mechanics of a Nahel bond", but that's wordier than I'd like to write down. For all these lists, an asterisk (*) denotes a magic system that has not been canonically seen. Edit: Dawnshard has added..... complications, to some of these. I think the main points all still stand, but I will need to revise things with Cosmere-wide Command taken into account, as well as genericified Heightenings. To start, how do the magics we know of work? Hey, I'm noticing a pattern... You missed a couple... Closing thoughts [insert my usual disclaimer about typos and odd ways of phrasing things, because I'm too lazy for more than a cursory scan of what I wrote, and another one of my usual disclaimers about there probably being obvious gaps I missed] References

  24. Hello! I'm new here, and this is my first post on 17th Shard! I'm really excited to join the community and discuss the cosmere with you guys! I've been meaning to join for a little while, but I finally joined today! I picked up Sanderson a few years ago and I've been obsessed ever since. I think that by now I've read almost every WOB . Anyway, Sanderson fans out there, what your favorite aspect of the cosmere? I really enjoy the vagueness of Hoid and the little things that he says to connect the worlds. I find the Wit aspect of Hoid from Stormlight Archive absolutely hilarious. He is a top contender for my favorite character/aspect of the cosmere. Also, this is a little bit unrelated, but are there any fellow musician Sanderson fans out there? I play cello and jazz piano; what do you guys play? I'm thrilled to join the 17th Shard and am looking forward to the future! I'm hoping it will be filled with many fascinating Cosmere discussions.

  29. I don't know to what degree knowledge can be gained from the Heralds who join the Radiants at Urithiru or at least ally with them at some point, but I'd say that the humans need to give them the honor and respect that I don't see in a lot of mindsets- they aren't lab rats or archives or pawns- they're the greatest heroes on the planet. Even the ones like Ishar and Nale. They fought and were tortured willingly for thousands of years to protect humanity and every drop of blood in a Rosharan's veins only flows because oceans have been spilt of the Heralds'. Every thought and deed, every nation and culture, every language and people exists on the backs of the Heralds' suffering. Every song may be sung only because of the Heralds' screams, every lover only knows their partner's body because every inch of the Heralds' has been violated, every child may play only because the Heralds' burdens never ended for thousands of years. They're heroes and their brokenness and frailty doesn't lessen their deeds, it only exemplifies a debt owed to them that can never truly be repaid.

We get such a negative view of them but that’s cause most of our information comes from Jasnah. But she loves an assassination more then anyone in the series.

  36. Elemental magic is no more cliché than magic itself being in almost every fantasy story. In fact, there are only a few examples of stories using elemental magic the right way that actually draws peoples attention. If I want to use this system in a story, then that's my decision.

  37. You can also add something about Seons on Sel - there's a clear bond example. It seems like a bond without a magic system though, because bonding a Seon doesn't seem to give access to the Dor. Sel also has Forgery which doesn't seem very bond-like, and a few others we know very little about (Bloodsealing, Clay-shan?)

  45. I'm with @Toaster Retribution on this, Sebarial and Pallona are super fishy. In Toaster's way back post of "Is There A Point to Sebarial", I put together some pretty compelling evidence for Sebarial at least being more than he seems, and more likely, part of the Ghostbloods (along with Pallona). A link to my original post is spoilered below. In another post in the same thread I analyzed the scene where Shallan returns from confronting Reshephir and Pallona grills her for information about the Unmade while plying her with possibly drugged tea. The whole post is spoilered below (because it's pretty long), but there's a consistent sense of menace that Shallan continually dispels: Is Sebarial Thaidakar? Maybe, or maybe he's just a well positioned senior member of the Ghostbloods, content to let those in his employ do what they need to do (like eliminate Thanadal, Ialai, etc to shore up his grip on the markets in the Alethi Warcamps). Is it known if Thaidakar is the founder of the Ghostbloods, or is he just the leader? If he's just the leader it could easily be Sebarial, if Thaidakar is also the founder then the case for Sebarial becomes a bit weaker. At the very least, the founder of the Ghostbloods should have figured out a way to attain at least a bit of the immortality that they are most assuredly striving for. Oh, new crackpot theory, Thaidakar is Nohadon, the weird shopping scene wasn't a dream/vision, it was really Thaidakar taking Dalinar to the Market. Actually that theory makes me wince a bit.

  46. The reputation system is going to stay right where it is, thanks muchly. I'm always for input, but not when that input is "My change is the only way, and you need to change it RIGHT NOW". It tends to make me very unlikely to listen to what you have to say. But to be fair, I'm going to go through your post and respond to it in a very detailed manner. You like your positive reputation, and from what I've gathered, many do. As Phantom points out though, upvotes without downvotes are less than useless. As you can earn upvotes, you can also earn downvotes, so I'm not sure entirely what you mean by "something else is going on with downvotes". It's all subjective, that is very true, but I'm not going to give a line by line criteria of what can or cannot (or should or shouldn't) be downvoted, or upvoted. I tend to go with "Was it Awesome, Totally Correct, In the negative for no good reason, or very Polite? Upvote", and "Rude, Incorrect, or Abrasive? Downvote". But that's my subjective reasoning behind either. And they're not stacked against newer posters. I've seen more fits over rep from people who have been here more than six months than any new posters. I'm not going to try to count how many times I've had someone PM me saying "Oh, my rep went down by two, someone's abusing the rep system", so don't assume that we only see problems with it from new people. That said, I've actually seen people throw a fit because their rep isn't as high as someone else's, and they want me to tell them how to catch up. As for what we have to gain, there's a lot to be gained by a random sampling of people's general reaction to your post, and to your posts overall. It gives a feel (at random) of what people thought of your post. I'm going to take a break here from my rant about reputation to respond to your comments about us being "The official Brandon Sanderson fansite". I'm VERY aware of the responsibilities that entails. I think about it daily, and am constantly trying to come up with ways to make it better because of what we are as "official". Not only are we the official Brandon fansite, but we're also the official Brandon forums (TWG is dead, it's not coming back), as well as the official Writing Excuses forums. When people want to discuss their works, they're pointed here. So yes, I take being the official fansite seriously, and administrate the site accordingly. I have talked with Brandon a number of times regarding site moderation, and he agrees with our policies, and trusts our judgement in the managing of the site. And yes, we admins do take site rules very seriously. People who are breaking rules are informed of their infraction, as well as having any appropriate action taken against them (Such as losing the ability to give reputation if they've recently been abusing the reputation system). We don't hang a red letter on these and try to keep it behind the scenes, because we try to give everyone a chance for a fresh shot (Mind, there have been a few times when someone felt the need to respond abrasively to a polite invitation to not be a dick to other members, and they're not around anymore). The people who have a red letter on them are those who the community feels needs to shore up their posting habits, whether it's not being as rude, or not posting their own theories as absolute fact and freaking out when someone corrects them. As for your proposed solutions: 1) Umm. No. That suggestion seems an awful lot like either two or three... 2) That's almost as bad as number one. We've considered it, but it would be entirely too much work to implement, plus, we want people to be able to see their rep as it IS, not a bleached version of reality. How bad would you feel if you saw that you were at 0 rep, posted an awesome post that got 7 upvotes, and you still showed 0 afterwards because you were at -10 before, and now you're at -3. Also, I don't want to deal with those same cases PMing me asking me why the rep system is broken and asking for it to be fixed. 3) For reasons listed above, this one is out the window because with only up and no down, it becomes less of reputation, and more of "How long has this person been here?" That's not acceptable. 4) I like the reputation system, and I think it performs admirably. I think it's awesome to see your rep climb higher and higher as you post more and more awesome things. And I like to know when I post a controversial post, too. Because if I can choose between knowing when I'm awesome and when I'm being rude or not knowing that people are taking offense at what I'm saying until there's a massive blowup, I'm going to take the first, thanks. TL;DR: It's staying. Thanks for your input.

  47. Is the girl who looked up about ash? I just thought of this possibility but it seems possible. to my understanding right the heralds except ash are all from ashyn with ash having either come over young or been born on roshar, this means that the girl who looked up only makes sense if it happens very soon after arriving on roshar which means ash is around and considering the similarities between Shallan and the girl that’s constantly implied when the story is told is it possible it’s ash? another hint to this is that while shallan is showing pattern the story the image of the girl has her hair turn white without shallan intentionally doing so. The same color as ash’s hair. so after the story and even before hoid tells kaladin of fleet people see an inhuman shape striding through the highstorms, this appears to be fleet, but what is he. Hoid claims to have never told the story of fleet before and every time someone sees it they kinda ignore it, so why has the story seemingly fallen into the obscurity or been forgotten. Then the question become what is fleet is he a spren? Like a unique sentient wind spren kinda like the winds are sentient in many mythology, a cognative shadow?, maybe a combo like the stormfather the shadow of fleet?
