  1. Anyone who's taken a foreign language class or watched the youtube channel Translator Fails will know that the online tool Google Translate is not reliable. However, it tends to produce humorous results depending on what languages you choose. So I made this. A place where we can put the translated editions of our favorite passages from Sanderson's works! I've started us off with the most famous and beautiful passage of all time:

  2. I have multiple personality disorder said bavadin , being frank. There was a barfight among sailors of different nationalities in kharbranth. It got resolved quickly but not before someone hurt a shin. Dude the food in this restaurant in T'Telir is good enough to die for , we must definitely Return . Dude Blushweaver is so beautiful , she took my Breath away. Why does no one trust an Inquisitor around thier drinks ? Cause they are afraid they will spike it. What did Leras say to Ati when he was moping about how everything dies in the end ? He told him to be more end-positive. Why was Jewels depressed ? Cause life was all so Drab to her. Why did Sadeas do such awful things ? Cause he only has a splinter of Honor. What did the Steel ministry tell ppl before sending them to the pits ? Repent for thee hathsin'ned Why didn't hoid go back to yolen ?? Cause he knew he would get a Frosty welcome.

  3. Saying hello, as requested. In the before time in the long-long ago, I was a devops engineer. Then came covid, and now I play video games and don't leave my house. I suppose some other stuff has changed, but I'm not sure what it is. Anyway, I'm a nerd, I do stuff with computers, play with math even though I'm horrible at it, and overall take the stance that "knowledge cannot be pushed, only pulled" so I encourage questions where I can.

  4. Fox would be strong for her friend. She needed to get rid of this pain for the time being. Could she take it all? Could she bring all of the emotion and pain from Nath onto herself? She allowed herself to open up a bit more, letting the pain in more and more. She felt a desire to... let... go.... She wanted to release herself into the bliss and loveliness that sleep would bring. She wanted to-- NO! The pain was too much for Fox to bear on her own. She let the extra amount she had taken upon herself to slide back to Nath. There had to be another solution. In all of the rooms, Fox saw something from her life. If it was hers, why could she not control it? She seemed to get this idea from... something.... some memory... someone.... telling her that she... was the.... commander and mistress of this place? That it would be what she willed it to be? Although Fox did not have a specific memory to attribute this knowledge to, she felt as if she had one at some point. She remembered, having a memory. How fascinating. Perhaps she could channel some of this suffering into a room much like the ones she had found earlier. How would one do something such as that? Fox looked at Nath, silently apologetic as she released him. She was going to somehow use this palace to help control some of Nath's pain. She looked at a wall and commanded, "Room, appear!" Nothing happened. She concentrated, focused, channeled all of her energy into making the door appear. Nothing happened. Fox sighed, but she was determined to do this. She was strong enough to do this. She had the will to do this. She exasperatedly seethed, "Why won't you obey me?" Much to her surprise, it responded. "Because you're so weak. You can never make a difference." The words rasped directly into her brain. Fox stepped back, surprised, angry, and secretly ashamed. "Weak? I'm not weak. If anyone's weak, it's you for not showing yourself." She responded indignantly out loud. "Ahhhhhh. The lies you let yourself believe. You really cannot change anything. You cannot make a difference. You cannot help this fool." "Nath isn't a fool!" She cried, the words coming before she had time to think about them. "You so readily defend the same man you worked hard to destroy. You turn around from shattering him to wanting to help pick up the pieces. Why? Why expend the effort to help a man you barely even know?" "Because-" Fox replied hesitantly, "Because it feels right." The voice seemed to laugh heartily, if such a thing were possible. "It feels right? Did I just hear you say that? Since when have you done what feels right?" "Well, I never stole from one who didn't deserve it." "Says you. Who are you to decide who does and doesn't deserve to have misfortune knocking on their doorstep?" Fox bit her lip. "Who are you to know the intentions and reasons behind what they did? You had no true knowledge. You only stole for self benefit." "Well, I changed." "You changed. You believe the right thing is to try to help someone you hated for years. What kind of sense does that make?" "It, it just feels right." "Ah, yes. That clears everything up. Even if it were the right thing, however, you wouldn't be able to do it. You've made yourself so.... vulnerable. There is nothing you can do to save him." "I'll, I'll figure something out!" The voice laughed again. "Yes, yes, is that not what you said when your brother started hunting Alice and you?" "What? He did no such thing." Fox said without conviction. "You were powerless then, and you are powerless now. You can do nothing." "As-- as long as I do my best, it doesn't matter what I can and can't do" "You really don't believe that.." A figure emerged from the dark of the wall. It was pitch black, so much so that you could not see it unless it was moving, which it was, toward Fox. It grabbed her wrists with a firm grip, and twisted her arm around her in a quick motion, ending with Fox's arms pinned to her back in a painful position. Just an inch more, and her arm would likely break. A squeak escaped Fox's lips as she instinctively knew what followed. The figure placed both wrists under the grasp of one hand, using the other hand to violently lift her by the base of the hood on her hoodie, and slam her head into the wall. As she fell to the ground, her head aching, she pleaded feebly, "please, don't brother", before remembering that this was not her brother. Why would her brother be doing this to her anyway? For some reason, she knew it had happened before. "You were useless to fight against your brother, as you are useless to fight against me. We are forces of existence, unstoppable and immalleable." The figure spoke, making its way toward Fox. Fox found stupid stupid tears wetting her face again. She was brave enough to stop this. She had the strength to fight back against this. Nath needed her. But the ache through her skull was incredible. "You do not matter because you cannot even sway the things that happen. We simply happen. You are useless." Fox stopped struggling. She knew her limitations. She could not stop this thing. Just as she could not stop her brother. Just as she could not stop a hurricane. All she could do was board up the windows and try to clean up afterward. So let her eyes flutter shut, and she curled into a ball. She allowed herself to become complacent. Things happened. As she heard a voice saying, "sooooo weak", and felt a boot being placed on her side, Fox remembered something. That older red-head from so many palace rooms was helping the Fox out of a ditch, bloodied and bruised. "Remember, Little Fox, it does not matter what you do, as long as you do your best." Fox's eyes snapped open. What was she doing? She was going against everything her sister had taught her! Even if she did end up dying, she would not go without a fight. Even if she was useless, she would die trying not to be. Fox would not go gently into that good night. She narrowed her eyes onto the figure beating her, and said with confidence and conviction, "I. Am. Me." As she said the words, the figure removed his boot from her. "I will do what is right, because it is right. And you, are getting in the way of what is right. So I will do my best to clear the path." Although she could barely focus her eyes, Fox braced herself against the wall, and stood upright. Emotion and physical torment were but races to run, mountains to climb, monsters to slay. The figure appeared to shrink as a dagger appeared in Fox's hand. She lunged toward the beast, finding that it was indeed tangible enough to be stabbed. She drove the dagger through where she thought it's heart would be. Fox thought she heard a real voice, not a sent thought, come from it's lips. It whispered in a barely audible tone, "Well done." The being dissipated into lingering smoke, that soon vanished as well. Fox leaned against the wall, and let herself slide back to the floor. She then proceeded to throw up all over that floor. After wiping the vomit off of her mouth, Fox stood again despite the fatigue. She looked at the knife in her hand, amazed at what she was able to create, or rather, manipulate. She placed the knife into one of her hoodie pockets. She wanted a room, an outlet, a place where she could corral Nath's pain. She looked at the wall, and imagined its shape being changed. An indentation sunk into the wall, morphing into something not unlike a cave. Well, that would work. Now for something harder, she imagined the wall becoming hinges, and the hinges being connected to a large gate with strong locks. She concentrated hard, I will have my gate. She thought, or rather, commanded. The matter complied. There was a large, beautiful, oak gate, that was swung open at the cave entrance. Fox's face broke into a smile, which died shortly after, as she remembered Nath. Fox strode over to Nath, and placed her hand back on his shoulder. Her jaw clenched together as the suffering was poured back into her. She reached her free hand out toward the cave, and allowed the pain to flow from her fingertips. It came out of her fingertips as a deep red smoke, unlike that she had imagined, flowing into the room she had created. She felt the pain leaving her, and she relaxed, but became taut again as she was quickly refilled. The pain was similar to the vastness of space, seemingly never ending. Fox continued to feed the red smoke into the cave tediously, until she felt Nath begin to stir. @Nathrangking

  5. Shard Ran down the street passing vendors and merchant stalls, whizzing past people left and right. He would NOT suffer the same humiliation that Vapor did! He wouldn’t let that cremling Yasdv tear away his honor, he wouldn’t stand there as she talked down to him or cast him out of the amphitheatre. There were at least seven others chasing him through the streets. He turned a corner and the ocean was before him, he had managed to run out onto one of the docks. The boats were missing, presumably out fishing or trading. His pursuers ran onto the dock after him and he turned around to face them. This situation was impossible and he knew it. He had tried to give them other leads, tried to convince them that he wasn’t the one he was looking for, but they wouldn’t be sated. Just like Yasdv, they were insatiable! Tyedl was obviously the better leader! And if he still had a chance to work for Tyedl, Shard would take it! Shard leapt off the dock backwards into the water a dozen feet below. Those following him shouted and ran to the edge of the dock. None of them jumped into the water, Thaylen people knew how dangerous the water could be, even this close to the shore. The undertows were killers, there were countless venomous little fish and crustaceans, not to mention infection that could spring up from any little gash or cut. Shard was nowhere to be found, and although nobody knew if he was alive or dead, they did know he wouldn’t be anywhere near Yasdv or her campaign anytime soon. The news of Shard vanishing overshadowed the news of one of the advisors being detained for illicit activities. The name wasn’t being released, and the advisory panel was far too noisy and chaotic for anyone to track down an accurate list of who was there and who wasn’t. It remained a mystery. Experience has been lynched, they were an Undercover Emissary. 10. Well everyone – we got there! Last night, Tay and I finished Words of Radiance together! This book was a much quicker read than the Way of Kings and I think that in spite of Tay’s insistence that she’s only reading these books for me, she really seems interested and committed to the series. It’s super cool to see! Since I haven’t posted since the end of part 3, this is going to be a longish post. However, I assume if you’ve been sticking around and reading these posts since I started this topic all the way back in March, you’re fine with a big dump of reactions. Before I go into the reactions to everything, this general reaction happened yesterday: TAY: Have there been other reactions to your thread on Mind Readers? ME: No not for a while. TAY: You’re not writing my reactions funnily enough. Anyways, here goes! -- *Lift interlude* TAY: This is it? This is the character that everyone loves? Does she have any other scenes in this book? ME: No, but she has a novella between this book and the next? TAY: I’m not sure I get the hype. ME: She’s just too awesome for you. TAY: I’m also unsure that Brandon Sanderson has ever met a 13-year-old girl. ME: Again – she’s too awesome to be a regular 13-year-old. -- *Lhan interlude* TAY: I don’t like interludes. ME: We can skip this one if you like. Not much happens. TAY: What happens? ME: A priest angers the queen of Alethkar, gets executed, and starts city-wide riots. TAY: *sighs* Yeah that sounds pretty metal. Let’s do it. -- There was a stretch of time where Tay and I just literally sat there, zoned out, and listened to the book for like four hours. When I quizzed her the next day, she had two new nicknames: SHADOWFIENDS – Formerly Rock Lobsters, this is what Tay called Chasmfiends. I kind of like Shadowfiends as a name for, like, chasmfiends that have been inhabited by Voidspren like Thunderclasts. How frickin badass does that sound? SHADOWBLOODS – This is the Ghostbloods. I think that Tay’s inherent love for Wheel of Time was seeping through in her retelling here, as there is a pretty prevalent use of “shadow” as a prefix for anything that is bad in Randland. -- I just wanted to comment on her lack of reaction to a particular scene. I, like many of you I’m sure also, cringe horribly when Kaladin says “AND FOR MY BOON…”. Tay, weirdly, didn’t react at all. When I asked her about it, she literally just said “It’s what I would have done. Screw Amaram.” Further evidence that Tay is Kaladin. -- *various reactions to Pattern* “Heh. What a guy.” “I could listen to Pattern explaining sex jokes all day.” “This dude is the real MVP.” -- *Shalladin happening in the chasms* TAY: They’re perfect for each other. They’re both colossal pains in the butt. ME: Yes! Finally someone agrees with me with Shalladin! -- *Kaladin is in the mouth of the Rock Lobster and says “I’m eternally grateful”* TAY: *laughs uproariously* -- *Shallan is strangling her father while singing him to sleep with the lullaby* TAY: Okay, I like how badass she is – but the singing is a little melodramatic for me. -- *Context: we both have asthma* TAY: Whenever I need to use my inhaler I’m referring to it as sucking in Stormlight. ME: I’m absolutely here for this. -- *Dalinar confronting Amaram* TAY: Yes! Go Dadinar! Protect your adopted son! -- In full disclosure, I have had to try to explain where the honorblades fit into the magic system like three times to Tay. By her own admission, she fully doesn’t understand it. However, she definitely understands the Orders of KR and gets that with each Ideal they speak, they kind of power up. At this point in the book, she was kind of getting that Kaladin had to say his next Ideal, but was confused when I referred to it as the Third Ideal. TAY: Third Ideal? Hasn’t he just said one? ME: No, he’s said two – remember “I will protect those who cannot protect themselves” is the second Ideal for the Windrunners. The First Ideal is the same for all Radiants – “Life before death. Strength before weakness- TAY: “Crem before cremlings.” Yep. Got it. -- *Szeth lashes Dalinar into the air* TAY: “I’m Kaladin! Come to save you on my chariot of winds! *air horn noises* -- *Dalinar is floating down thanks to Radiant Kaladin* TAY: I can show you the wooooorld! -- *Kaladin says “The winds are mine!”* TAY: I hate that. So cringey. ME: Cringey!? Okay let’s imagine you’re Kaladin – you’ve been depressed, torn up by your conflicting emotions, beat up, and finally got your powers back. You’ve been thinking about some badass line all the way to Narak to fight Szeth – what would you come up with? TAY: Well I cover up my depression with being funny. Maybe I’d let Dalinar float down and say “did you drop this?” ME: I think you’d just show up and do a dab, say "YEET" and then fight Szeth. TAY: That’s probably exactly what I’d do. -- We then discussed the nature of cringeyness in books like this – we realized that I really appreciate over-the-top badass lines, but Tay loves cutting tension with sarcastic comments. She said that if she had Radiant powers, she’d probably be more like Deadpool in her interactions than Batman. -- *Szeth constantly repeats his name* TAY: “I am Szeth-son-son-son-Dadanndo!” Ungh. I hate Szeth. He’s my least favourite character now. *Tay then spends the next few hours referring to one of our cats as “Flam-son-son-son-Dadanndo”* -- *Szeth and Kaladin fight each other in the air* TAY: Pew pew pew pew! -- *Syl changes from a Blade to a Shardspear* TAY: OOOOOH! So cool! SYL YOU THE REAL MVP! -- *Shallan tells the scholars to bind and gag Renarin to shut him up as she’s trying to work the Oathgate* TAY: Mood. *pauses* Alright… I think I’m starting to like Shallan more now. -- Just a little poetic synchronicity happening at this point – because we live in South Africa, our seasons are inverted from the northern hemisphere. We have summer in December and January and winter in July and August, etc. In Johannesburg, we’re a landlocked city at altitude and thus we have incredibly dry winters in comparison to summer where we have big storms every few days. Point is – since it’s the end of summer we haven’t had a proper rainstorm since, like, May. The day that we finished Words of Radiance we had the first proper thunderstorm in Johannesburg for months. It was so cool and fitting. -- *Shallan says she hates Pattern since she used him to kill her mother* TAY: You take that back! -- Not really a fun reaction, but Tay loved that Lopen could suck in Stormlight. I found it weird because I really didn't like Lopen all that much, but I immediately liked Lift. Tay seems to have the inverse reaction to mine. -- Tay’s reaction to Sadeas’ murder at the hands of Adolin deserves its own paragraph. When it happened, Tay audibly gasped, then clapped like the opening theme song from Friends, then proceeded to get me to pause the audiobook. She then became Adolin’s hype-man for like twenty minutes as she digested the scene. She absolutely loved that Adolin did it – she was sure that when he was saying “Unfortunately for you, I’m not as good a man as my father”, he was going to slide the knife away and say something like “Stay away from my family” and had an eye-roll primed and ready. When Adolin actually killed him, she was so surprised and happy. She then asked me to rewind the scene and play it again so that she could savour the death scene again. Sometimes I worry that my wife enjoys these murder scenes so much, but then again, I listen compulsively to podcasts about serial killers and unsolved murders, so I guess we’re evenly macabre. Long story short – she likes Adolin now, or at least has a hell of a lot more respect for him. -- As the last scene involved Dalinar, Shallan, Kaladin, and Renarin talking about which Order they belonged to, Tay decided to take a shot at naming them all. I’m going to try to recreate her thought process completely: TAY: Yeah, I can name them. I’ve been listening to two of these books now. I’m sure I can do it. WINDBREAKERS SKYDANCERS DUSTSLINGERS Wait. Wait… Oath…. Is there something with oaths? ME: Nope. TAY: I thought Oathbreakers was one. WATERWEAVERS. I don’t know, what other things are there? Oh oh oh! Farmers! They can grow things! Let’s call them… SOIL ENCOURAGERS! You’re not helping me by telling me what the other elements are. ME: None of these are correct. TAY: Um. FIRE? I’m thinking about Earth Wind and Fire. You know? Like September? *sings September by Earth Wind and Fire.* Okay so FIREMAKERS. Oooh ohh! LIGHTSPINNERS. Then the DARKDOERS. STORM…. Ssssssssssssss *making a hissing noise*. I’m thinking of another word! Something that arbitrarily seems to do with motion. STORMSNAPPERS. ME: That’s nine. What’s number ten? TAY: JAZZ HANDS. *Laughter ensues* ME: “I’m Dalinar Kholin! Order of the Jazz Hands! Give Odium the ol’ Razzle Dazzle!” -- There you have it, Radiants. Your ten orders of knights: Windbreakers, Skydancers, Dustslingers, Waterweavers, Soilencouragers, Firemakers, Lightspinners, Darkdoers, Stormsnappers, and Jazz Hands. Not sure when we’ll pick back up and do Edgedancer or Oathbringer, but we’ll give you an update when that happens! Until then – Crem before cremlings.

  11. Hey everyone, I'm new to the community. I'm a huge fan of the stormlight archive series and I decided that I wanted to try and make a short film about some of the iconic scenes in the book in my opinion. I'll start by making 3d models of the characters and I'll even make them 3d printer friendly so if you have access to a 3d printer you could print yourself a mini figurine. I'll update my progress here as frequently as I can.

  12. Fox cried out as Nath pulled away in a rage. She was horrified to find that her hand was already bringing out her knife. She slid it back in as soon as she realized what she was doing. "Y-you are not a failure, Nath, do not lie to yourself in this way." She said starting with a tremor in her voice, but ending with confidence.

  13. He looked so... empty. Had she failed again? No. This had to work. This had to work. Fox stroked his hand, trying to bring warmth back into it, until pulling the lifeless being into an embrace. A tear slipped out of her eye. This had to work. "Nath, I need you to come back to me. Listen to my voice. Please come back." She half-whispered half-spoke into his ear. @Nathrangking

  15. The loneliness and numbness that surrounds me shifts. My slumber is fading away. My peace is shattering and I am rising through the apathy in which I am drowning. A familiar presence is pulling me from my sleep. Nothingness is wrapping me in ice. The whole of my body is wracked by spasms as I leave serenity behind. Fog melts from my mind which is a feeling as stones upon which waters crash. In an instant my eyes fly open. Words cannot form in my mouth. My tongue is lead and my head is devoid of thought. I look up at the figure standing above me without recognition. There is death in my eyes. I stare as a blank slate at this unknown being. I would not be known to be alive at all if not for the fact that I am mechanically breathing. For a moment I feel as though I should know this person, but this dissolves as soon as it appears. I am an empty vessel devoid of anything. I gaze ahead and shiver within a terrible cloak of cold.

  16. For once, I enjoyed my time in Walmart. These were in the for sale book bin. I couldn’t find AoL, but I’m glad I saw these. I am kinda offended by the fact that Sanderson books are thrown haphazardly in a sale bin, but at the same time it's not everyday you can get 2 hardcover Sanderson books for 10 bucks.

  17. I think the timeskip was especially important for Kaladin's character. Being low-grade barely functioning depressed for several months is pretty accurate for how his type of depression goes, but it would have been miserable for readers to read Kaladin depressed POVs for that whole timeframe. Storywise it's nice to have a "new normal" establish itself before you proceed to shake things up.

  20. Fox stepped into a magnificent palace, the walls made of beautiful crystalline quartz. The hall's floor was cloaked in a blood red rug. The scene was perfect, pristine, quiet, tarnished only by Fox's presence. It seemed... too perfect, however. Strangely so. It didn't seem fully.... real? Fox looked at the line of doors, each towering figure made of solid oak. Stepping up to one, Fox took the handle, and opened up the door with a creaaaaaaaak. She immediately felt conflicted, unnaturally so, as if someone else were controlling how she felt. As she peered in, she heard the cry of a young girl. "Please, no, it's all we have left!" The room was all white, expect for a terrified teenage girl with brown hair, and a cutsy red dress, and a much younger version of the Fox, holding a knife. Standing in the doorway, Fox cocked her head curiously, she did not remember ever doing something like this, although as the younger her spoke, it came back to Fox slowly. "You say that as you wear a dress worth more than me!" The Fox lashed out at the girl. "Now hand it over." The girl fumbled with something at her side, and handed over a large wad of cash. "Please, my father is being held hostage, if I don't give this to the kidnappers, they may kill him!" The Fox eyed the girl, before snatching the money and running off. The girl faded, but Fox could see herself running away with the cash and a conflicted look on her face, and hear the girl's sobs. Then, everything faded to white. There must be nothing else for her to see there, so Fox stepped out, and shut the door. She walked down a couple more doors, and opened it up. Inside, was her and another red-headed girl, and her brother. Although Fox knew she should be happy to see her brother, she felt something else: Anger. "Brother, NO!" The younger Fox screamed. "You should have come to us first, we are family! Now what will we do?" Her brother, who had been looking at his shoes before, looked up and smiled a smile that, for some reason, struck a lightning bolt of horror into Fox's heart. She stepped out and slammed the door before the scene had finished. For some reason, that room made her very uncomfortable. Walking a bit further, Fox opened yet another room. Inside was her and that other red-head again. The ginger was handing the Fox a knife, who's face was unhappy as she took it. The girl spoke. "Little Fox, like I say every time. We are street-dwellers. We must assume the best, but prepare for the worst." The room faded. That was fast. In another room, she saw Nath handing her a jewel encrusted knife. It was the knife! The knife that had killed her brother! Fox felt her hand forming into her fist, although she really felt something along the lines of... gratitude, and... trust? "Do try not to cut yourself with it. It has a rather nasty tendency to eat away at the souls of those that it cuts." He said, just before the room faded away. No! She wanted to see more! Why didn't it let her see more? She slammed the door with frustration. She walked to the very next door and flung it open. The moment the knob turned, she was smacked with a wall of terror, anger, hatred, and horror. Standing over the older red-headed girl was a man in a long trenchcoat and a fedora, although Fox couldn't see any version of herself there. The girl was bleeding, and didn't seem to be moving. The man reached down and checked the girl's pulse, before looking up and smiling a sickeningly cruel smile, and staring right at Fox. Fox was stricken with fear yet again as her brother spoke in a smooth crisp voice, "You can come out now, Little Fox." She shut the door quickly, before anything else happened, breathing heavily. What was that? Fox needed to get out of this castle, it was making her question her reality. She walked down the hall, and found a stairway downward. When she got to the bottom of the stairs, Fox found herself in a lobby type, but instead of a door to the outside, there was a door that was different than the others. This one was made of a pearly gold. Fox walked up to it, deciding to go in. Fox gritted her teeth, and pushed the door open. The walls were defined in this room, although they were black. The floor was black also. In the middle of the room was a man on his knees, staring at his hands. His eyes were unfocused, and his face was twisted in an eternal state of torment. Although he too was veiled in darkness, his features were distinct. "Oh, Nath" Fox whispered, dashing over to him. She needed to bring him back. But as her fingers brushed his shoulder, she was instantly encompassed in wrath and agony. Pain streaked through her side and her jaw, and she felt eternally enraged at herself for failing. She gasped at the weight of it, though it only lasted half a second as her hand reflexively recoiled. No. She would be strong enough to do this. She reached out and placed a firm hand on his shoulder, allowing herself to be filled to the brim with pain and emotion.

I really love time skips in general, because they're a great way to look at characters we know and love in a different context, and I'm very happy RoW went in this direction They're also great to avoid plot dragging, especially when there's so much going on that explaining everything would take half a book by itself. This way you get to start the story after the big changes have already happened, and avoiding all the small minutiae like "yep, this and that happened" creating intrigue in the reader. And if there was anything really important it can be explored later on in flashbacks. As someone who loves epic fantasy series, I think many mid-series slumps could have been avoided through time skips as a way to cut on the too-many-too-dense plotlines that often come with big casts of characters and large scope of storytelling. WoT has shades of this for me, and I've been mourning the ASOIAF 5-years time skip since about 2005, so I'm overjoyed Stormlight went in this direction, and I've been happy about the planned 'break' mid-Stormlight since it was announced.

  29. if nothing else, sades was with dalinar at the rift, and he planned strategy with dalinar as an equal. sadeas is as much responsible for the rift as dalinar. in fact, all the crimes dalinar ever committed during his time as warlord, sadeas was on his team, and equally responsible. may i also point out that dalinar was trying to find excuse to not loot towns, while sadeas had his soldiers pick the good looking girls among the townspeople for him to rape? for all of dalinar's troubled past, even at his worst, he still was much better than sadeas.

  30. To try to be a better person and to act in a way that has to deal with the consequences of this, even if someone is invaluable to humanity and try to save the world and humanity from destruction = irredeemable monster. Being a petty selfish, trying to overthrow the king, betraying an ally trying to seek peace and unity between the kingdoms, and causing the death of an almost entire army, not repenting and trying to continue undermining the attempt to protect humanity = poor wronged murdered by the monstrous Adolin.

  31. Sadeas was a traitor who was threatening not just Dalinar but the entire world for his own petty reasons. At least Dalinar acknowledged that what he's done is unforgivable and is trying to be a better person. That's the biggest difference between Sadeas and Dalinar

  32. My husband is an infantry officer and has deployed a couple times, he has PTSD and depression. We have a great relationship and a big part of why it works is me NOT trying to fix him and just supporting him and accepting his brokenness. In a lot of ways it’s hard for him but in more ways his issues have made him a stronger, better man. Surgebinder or not, we all break, and that’s the beauty of being human. I think Kal could do a relationship but it would have to be with someone greatly independent who didn’t try to fix him but just loved him as his is, broken and everything. Storms, I hope that’s not Laral.

What happened when Jak went to the pits of eltania ? He realised that he had made a Kolossal mistake. Why do ppl dislike waxillium ? Cause he's a Pushy guy.

  34. Hello everyone! We’re back for another instalment of Guardboi – we’ve gotten up to the middle of Part 3: Deadly. The last chapter we listened to is Shallan getting ready to go on her “How do you poop?” date with Adolin. Here are some new names we learned in the past couple chapters: Eshonai – Captain Parshendi Venli – Captain Parshendi’s Sister Rysn – Crippled Khaleesi (this came after I told her that Larkins are referred to as “Dragon Bugs” by Isaac and Brandon) Here are some fun reactions: *Adolin’s first duel, he’s sitting there talking to his Shardblade (like a good Radiant should!)* TAY: Ungh. Of course Adolin talks to his Shardblade. He’s like a guy who kisses his knuckles before a fight. This was just the beginning of Tay’s full-on Adolin hate that’s been going on in the past few chapters. I think it’s cause she likes Kaladin so much and Adolin is bullying her homeboy throughout most of Part 2. Tay insists that it isn’t because she loves Kaladin (which I still think she does), but rather because “Adolin reminds me of every pretty boy, rich, jock idiot I went to high school with!” I just smile because Adolin and Kaladin become such homies and their friendship is one of the most delightful parts of the books for me. -- *After falling asleep through Ym’s interlude* TAY: So some geezer made a kid some shoes? ME: Yeah and then he gets shanked by a guy with a Shardblade. TAY: Should I care about this? ME: Only if you want to know that some guy is going around serial killing budding Surgebinders. TAY: I hope he kills Shallan next. -- *Tay noticed all the weird stuff that Kaladin was noticing about Zahel and started asking me who he was* TAY: Is he a bad guy? He sounds like a bad guy. ME: No! He’s a good guy. One of the best guys, I think. TAY: Oh, is this the one everyone keeps wanting me to meet? ME: Who? TAY: Lift? Is Zahel Lift? ME: *laughter* -- Shallan is crying in one scene: I look over at Tay and there’s a big, over-the-top eye roll. -- *Shallan and Adolin meet* TAY: They’re perfect for each other. I hate it. -- Speaking of Shallan: Tay LOVES PATTERN. She thinks he’s easily the best character and will avidly listen and laugh whenever Pattern has some dialogue. This is real, you guys. Pattern may be the thing that actually makes Tay commit to the whole ten-book series. She has started co-opting “LIES” into her everyday conversation, and appreciates when Pattern attempts to deconstruct metaphors, as she does it frequently with her students. For example, last night Tay learned a new slang word from her students: drip. Apparently, drip, means having a nice, expensive, impressive thing. To have a Ferrari is to have a drip… or be drip? Or be drippin? Not quite sure. However, this realisation happened around the time where Shallan is explaining to Pattern how Nohadon is a ‘symmetrical’ name… TAY: What!? No! I agree with Pattern! You can’t just say that a name is symmetrical when it’s not! Just like you can’t just say that ‘drip’ is cool now! A drip is a lame person! I’m so frustrated with language! Tay now believes that Pattern is too good for Shallan and wants him to find a cooler Radiant to bond with. She put forward Lopen or Rock as suitable candidates to bond with Pattern. -- TAY: Why is Shallan trying to help her brothers at this fair? ME: She’s a good person! TAY: No she’s not. -- *Wit showed up at Middlefest and is asking if spren speak to Shallan* TAY: So, this guy has come up to Shallan and has basically said “Yer a wizard, Harry.” Is that about right? -- Then, the other night we had some Horneater Lager and decided to watch Inception. At one point (you know the scene I’m talking about), Tay turns to me and very quietly whispers, “Surgebinding, Chris!” -- At one point, Tay pauses the reading and has a big old realisation – she is very much like Kaladin. I think she was a little annoyed with her quiz results (see above) that placed her in the Order of the Windrunners, but I think she’s very aptly placed. It was a scene where Kaladin is realising that he’s set a bit apart from Bridge Four and is feeling the weight of responsibility for all of these men who follow him. Yes, he’s set them free from their bondage under Sadeas, but he wants so badly to protect them, even though he knows that he’s not going to be able to protect all of them. Tay has this same thing, from time to time. She often makes a joke that she must have a tattoo on her forehead (that’s some big Bridge Four energy there) that says “TELL ME ALL YOUR PROBLEMS” since most of her students choose to confide in her and ask for her help with their various personal problems and issues. She wants so badly to keep them safe and make sure nothing in this horrible world is going to hurt them, even though she knows that they’re all going to have to go out there, make their mistakes, and be hurt by them on their own. That’s why I love these books so much – they’re not just full of awesome cinematic moments of mind-blowing fantasy, but they also provide characters that we can relate to on a host of different levels. Anyways, even though these posts are mostly happy-go-lucky laughing at reactions to characters and events, this one has ended on a somewhat sentimental note. Kind of reminds me, once again, that the journey is the most important part, and I’m having the time of my life listening to these books again with someone I love. Keep safe, Cosmerenauts! Only 85 days to go! -- PS: This interaction just happened before posting: TAY: Hey are we going to find out all of the bad stuff Elhokar did or are we just going to take Rayse at his word? ME: Rayse? TAY: Yeah… that Lighteyes with the Shardblade who Moash introduced to Kaladin? ME: Oh… Graves! That’s weird because Rayse is actually the real name of Odium. TAY: … ME: … TAY: Spooky-spook.

She threw a mental wall around all of her thoughts, strongest around the ones she wanted to hide the most. She managed to stop her frantic mind from skittering around, then did her best to think of nothing but pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. She couldn't completely clear her mind, but she could just think of something completely useless, which she figured would accomplish the same purpose. Mind prepared, she nodded.

  39. We knew the audio original story The Original, written by Brandon with Mary Robinette Kowal, would come out September 14th, but we barely heard anything about it, considering it was coming so soon. This changed yesterday and now we have the cover, synopsis, and a sample of The Original. The story is a collaboration between a company called Mainframe and Recorded Books. Apparently Mainframe is a creation of Brandon and Max Epstein, a friend and creative partner in Hollywood. We'll hear more about Mainframe "soon" but The Original is the "first project." Julia Whelan, an the Audie Award winning narrator, narrates the story. The synopsis is: You can listen to the first chapter of it below!

  41. Internal power struggle like generations of kandra? It occurs to me that the honorspren Captain Notum really shouldn't have been surprised that honorspren are bonding humans again or that the Stormfather himself had a bond. The heads of Honorspren society may be keeping their people in the dark. Another possibility is that Odium made them a non-aggression offer. Sit out the fight, don't bond any humans, and I won't destroy your Shadesmar civilization. They've spent a couple thousand years building their own civilization in Shadesmar, not everyone would necessarily be wiling to throw that away. They could also be continuing to follow Honor's final instructions he gave while dying (ranting that humans could destroy the world with their unchecked powers).

  42. Sadeas encouraged Dalinar to burn Rathalas. If he was opposed to the decision, he would've at least tried to dissuade him (although I don't think he would have succeeded), but he actively supported him. Sadeas was just as bad as Dalinar, but he was sly about it, while Dalinar was transparent about who he was. And Dalinar ultimately decided to change, while Sadeas felt no remorse for his actions. Also, Sadeas slaughtered Parshendi that surrendered, not to mention using the bridge crews and betraying his allies. Yeah, I think Adolin was in the right for doing the stabby-stab. (And I imagine it would've gone much worse for Team Radiant at Thaylen City if Sadeas was on Odium's side in place of Amaram. So... Good job Adolin.)

  43. I think calling what Adolin did first degree murder is a stretch. I would consider it a rightful execution of a dangerous criminal. Now, I know that Adolin doesn't have any legal authority and it's bad for one person to be judge, jury, and executioner. The thing that makes it bad though is lack of evidence. The entire train for the big legal systems most countries have is to make sure no one is convicted of a come they didn't commit. This is why due process is so important. In this situation however, there is absolutely no question of guilt. Adolin witnessed Sadeus' previous crimes and Sadeus admitted to planning even worse things in the future. With that much evidence there's not a jury on Roshar, if they have them, that would say Sadeus isn't guilty.

  44. How shall I put this? Brandon Sanderson is a butcher. He is most likely among the top 5 of bloodthirsty authors of our time. I wouldn't call him grimdark, because he does rarely show human depravation in gory detail, but it is there, make no mistake. Remember mass executions for making a political point during the Final Empire. Or bridge runs? To be told that your task is your death and there is no escape? Have you computed the death rates during the Catacendre? How many of the original Elantrians survived? What is going on in Dakhor monastries? Take Nalthis. How many Breaths were required to make the Phantoms? Do you think the original owners gave them up voluntarily? On Roshar, multiple desolations with death rates above 90%. Your chances surviving the Somne and then Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been larger than the series of desolations before Aharietiam. On Threnody, let's be real, evacuating a continent is not practical. Can you imagine the scenes in the harbors? Can you imagine the last weeks of Ashyn - the night skys turning red and smelling the burning land? I cannot; in fact I don't want to. But I can conclude that it must have happened. Every novel of the Cosmere is dripping blood. The packaging is nice, however.
