  1. I don't react to Fox's fairly obvious gesture. I shoot the demon a dark look that could shatter a wall of steel before returning my gaze to Fox it softens pain etching itself deeply. I believed as you do for 11 millennia. I failed a friend, a brother, a son, a student. I let him be banished until the end of time for my stupidity." Tears start sliding down my face. "I ran from this demon his shadow holding me in a suffocating embrace. I could never escape him. I would close mt eyes and there he was accusing me. I sealed myself away so that I could escape him and never fail anyone ever again. It did not help. It made things so much worse. I thought that I deserved to suffer and so I did. How could I ever move beyond this? Alone I could not. As I battled it in this place I was not alone you were there Fox as were the other members of the Fellowship. My battle was doomed from the start. Yet I fought anyway and now I can live knowing that the demon exists, but has no more power over me. You are not alone. You have the fellowship and me." I send a concentrated ingot of light through our bond. I will it to stay with her and not dissipate. "That Ingot is yours it is of me. Even if I should be trapped here I will be with you always. You need not know how to control your past you only need to live each moment as the sovereign of your past." My tears continue to fall. I am not being punished I am giving you and the others a chance. It is not true Fox that none love you Fox. Even if you don't know them they are there. The Fellowship cares for you and in so short a time Fox I have grown to care for you in ways I have not for so long. You will learn to love in time this I promise you." My voice remains strong despite the tears. You bring humanity to the Fellowship Fox. Your power is greater than any magic that I have ever known. I left my friend to die my honor is very much in question. They need you Fox. You ground them. You remind them why they fight. You threaten to stab them with your knives. They don't have that happen every day." My tears slow.

  2. Welcome to The Overlady Reads Words of Radiance, Part 3! This episode is about the duel. You know, the duel in Words of Radiance Part 3. The Part 3 Words of Radiance duel. You may remember it because there's a duel that happens in Words of Radiance Part 3 and if you read Words of Radiance, specifically Part 3, specifically the part with the duel in it, you'd know about the duel in Words of Radiance Part 3. Other things also happen in Words of Radiance Part 3 other than the duel like the super important character Jix who Lucy decides is more important than other characters like Dalinar and Sebarial. Other stuff that's not the duel also happens in Words of Radiance Part 3 but those aren't the duel that happens in Words of Radiance Part 3 so they aren't as good as the duel in Words of Radiance Part 3. There's actually two duels in Words of Radiance Part 3, but you know the one I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the duel that isn't the duel in Words of Radiance Part 3 (You know the one), though we do talk about the duel that's not the duel (You know, the one I'm talking about) which is pretty cool but it's not the duel in Part 3 of Words of Radiance that you're thinking of and that I'm talking about. Anyway, here's the video where we talk about Words of Radiance Part 3 the duel and also the parts that aren't the duel (including the duel that's not the duel):

  3. There's no vote minimum, and ties are decided by fate, so there's a 1 in 3 chance I'm going to die. I need to bring energy into the thread, and there's only one song capable of that. Everybody get up, it's to time to slam down. We got a real jam going now. Welcome to the vote jam. Here's your chance, state your plans at the vote jam. Alright. Come on and slam, and then we'll end the jam. Come on and slam, if you want a plan. Hey Mist, what you gonna do? Hey you, what you gonna do? All these people in the thread won't vote. So I'll start now alright let's go. You asked 'bout rules but then you zipped. And now I will unseal those lips. And vote. Accuse you of hate. Attack you until you engage. Making sure you're in the room, but never make a big kaboom. Just vote already, vote already, make sure you attack somebody. State your case and we'll be fine, take this thread into overdrive. Hey fellas, turn it up. Spread the votes and burn it up. Control your fate, and start the game, so hey let's go.

  6. My husband is an infantry officer and has deployed a couple times, he has PTSD and depression. We have a great relationship and a big part of why it works is me NOT trying to fix him and just supporting him and accepting his brokenness. In a lot of ways it’s hard for him but in more ways his issues have made him a stronger, better man. Surgebinder or not, we all break, and that’s the beauty of being human. I think Kal could do a relationship but it would have to be with someone greatly independent who didn’t try to fix him but just loved him as his is, broken and everything. Storms, I hope that’s not Laral.

  7. Personally, I don't think that Shallan's last truth needs to be one single event that happened in her past. I think it's her whole childhood. I think Wit has already told her her final Truth and she just hasn't realized it or faced it yet. Look at the first truth we see her speak on screen. "I'm terrified." I don't think that's a truth of just that moment. She's a totally fear driven character. Everything about her is run, or hide. I think this last truth will be the same idea. It's bigger than just one thing. Every time her childhood comes up it's always this image of the perfect family in her head. A fairy tale of what she wishes her family could have been, placing all the blame for the trauma squarely on her shoulders for killing her mother. And it doesn't add up at all. Her father let everyone believe that he'd killed his wife in a jealous rage, and everyone was perfectly willing to believe it. Her mother tried to kill her. These are things that don't come out of nowhere. But she blames herself for all of it. In the same way a small child blames themselves for their parents getting divorced. I think the lie that attracted Pattern in the first place relates to this. I think Shallan was a frightened and confused little girl in a chaotic household filled with violence, and she just wanted to pretend that everything was alright. And we know where that led. Her mother trying to kill her because she was "one of them." I think her final Truth is going to be what Wit already told her. She doesn't deserve any of the the pain she's been through. She is not responsible for the pain and suffering of her family. No matter how much it hurts her to say it, no matter how much she loved them, her family was not perfect and none of what happened was her fault.

  8. With Roshone dead, what do you think the possibility is of Brandon setting up for a Kaladin + Laral romance. In Lirin's chapter, Lirin thinks about how he would have liked to have her as a daughter and how he admires her. It says: In Oathbringer, we learned that Syl likes Laral: I was never on team Kalaral (sp?) before, but I can see a subtle setup by Brandon. She was the girl Kaladin was supposed to marry as a child, but it was doomed when her father died and she needed to marry for position. Now Roshone is dead with Kaladin trying to protect him (so none of the Helaran issues that Kaladin + Shallan would have). We don't know much about Laral. I think Kaladin views her as a little stuck up, but his interactions with her have been very limited in recent years. We know Lirin and Syl like her, and if Brandon chooses to have Laral and Kaladin interact, there is potential. I can also see Laral possibly coming to Urithiru as a scribe for Bridge Four, since she now has nothing tying her home. It would be easy for Brandon to bring in Kaladin+ Laral interactions with her as a free agent. I also don't think Brandon would have killed off Roshone without having something better in mind for Laral. I do think Brandon is going to bring in some romance for Kaladin in this novel. Syl has talked about wanting him to have romance too much for nothing to happen. Shalladin is certainly out for this book. Rysn only gets an interlude in RoW. Jasnah is in a different character grouping and so interactions with Kaladin would be limited. Not to mention that Brandon has said that we won't get to know Jasnah too much until the back 5 books. Tarah or Azure are possibilities, but it seems to me that Brandon is setting up the stage for Laral. She hasn't been my favorite character in previous books, but if we go off of Lirin's opinion and Syl's, then I think she has potential that Brandon might want to explore. Plus Kaladin saying that she is "the girl he was never going to marry" is begging to be proven wrong.

  9. So for the longest time everyone has said they think that Kaladins 4th Oath is “I will forgive myself for those I cannot save” and I have disagreed. Not because I don’t think that’s his Oath. But because I think from a Literary perspective that it makes more sense for that to be his 5th Oath. At his core Kaladin’s biggest issue has been his inability to accept failure. And so for his character to come full circle it only makes sense for him to resolve that as his 5th Oath. So, into his 4th. I have always believed that this Oath will be about accepting that to protect you may have to kill. My reasoning for this is in the first book Kaladin goes and kills a lot of Listeners. At the end and through Words of Radiance he questions Syl why it was ok for him to kill them but not Elhokar. For the final battle of book 2 Kaladin finds himself out of action against the Listeners and we get what I think is our first glimpse into Kaladins issue. He only fights Szeth and he doesn’t kill him. He wounds him and the storm kills Szeth. then in Oathbringer in Kholinar Kaladin fights against the Fused and Singers. But he’s conflicted. He’s made friends with a lot of the Singers from earlier and now has to watch his friends fight against each other. Then he fails Elhokar. Now in chapter 8 Kaladin reasons with himself that he should finish off Moash and finds himself unable to do so. if we query the gemstone archive epigraph from Oathbringer, a Windrunner says he will soon swear the 4th Oath. But he’s not sure he can. Shouldn’t he want to help people? The wording has always made me question. How does being ok with not saving people directly go against wanting to help people. It doesn’t. You can be ok with failure because you’re still trying to help. But directly killing people who will cause harm does seem to be against helping people. anyway that’s my reasoning, mostly I think Kaladin being ok with his failings leaves him nowhere to grow in the 5th Oath. And his 5th Oath should really be the climax growth of his character.

  10. Reading Chapter 8 made me wonder why Kaladin suddenly seemed to react so strongly to what Moash was saying and I think there's a factor outside his depression. I think it's significantly linked to him running out of Stormlight just at that moment. Ever since the beginning Kaladin described the intense feeling of taking in Stormlight, and I think he's been self-medicating his depression by using Stormlight excessively. The feeling of that takes his negative thoughts away and so he's now become accustomed to having it when he's in stressful situations (i.e. fights). I think his reaction to Moash makes a lot more sense when looking at it as Kaladin having a 'come-down' from this 'drug' as he's now not used to dealing with these thoughts on his own anymore, which is why Moash's words affect him so much in this more vulnerable state. Edit: This might be a precursor to Stormlight Savantism where you struggle to function normally without it? Edit 2: Upon rereading the chapter, there's a marked difference between Kaladin's attitude to Moash before vs after he's run out of Stormlight. Compare the last thing he says to Moash before he runs out of Stormlight to the first thing he says after

  13. The Fox looked at the dagger in her hand, then she looked back up at Nath. He did not look afraid. He did not look regretful. He did not look... betrayed, as she had expected. He looked.... he looked like he wanted the best for her. He looked as if... he had accepted what was to come.* The Fox turned the knife over in her hands. If she killed Nath, would she be free from her emotion? He had been the one to persuade her to open up once again. It was kind of his fault she was here. Just moments earlier, she was ready to let go of everything to not feel the pain. She had been ready to give in, what had changed from then to now? Well, Autumn had been killed by Winter, but that was inevitable. Nath had made her vulnerable, but Nath had made her feel again. Nath had brought her pain, but Nath had brought her strength. The Fox never should have opened herself up. If Nath were to continue to push her, would she be broken? Like that girl staring into the void? Was there anything wrong with staring into the void? As the confusion, the pain, the hatred, the anger, the frustration, the sadness, the desperation rolled through the Fox... she knew she had to get rid of it. All of it. She hated feeling this way. She hated feeling so exposed. She hated feeling so... vulnerable. She wanted to go back to how it was. To the time of nonchalance. Life was so much better then. The Fox wanted to go home. Her hands trembled as she grasped the hilt, as she had grasped her knife hilts a hundred times before. Her arms and legs felt weak. Her jaw trembled. The Fox's eyes could no longer meet Nath's. She stepped forward. "I'm so sorry." She whispered. "Please forgive me." She used all of her strength to raise her frail, unfocused eyes upon Nath's face. The Fox could feel something in her throat. Bile? She must have been disgusted with herself. "I'm so sorry." She repeated, tears streaming down her face as she raised her knife. She hated that she couldn't be strong one last time. That she had to show weakness until the end. That she couldn't just gaze upon the last one who believed in her with the strength to say goodbye. She closed her eyes. A sharp pain ricocheted through the Fox. She stood there for a second, like a tree that was just chopped at the base and hadn't decided in which direction to fall, before plunging to her left. Her body lay slumped between Nath and Winter, a knife hilt sprouting from her stomach, and a trickle of red seeping out of her lip's corner.

  14. It's not just a stretch, if you put Adolin in a modern court on that charge he'd be found not guilty because the killing wasn't premeditated, which is what distinguishes first from second degree murder. I'm pretty sure even a halfway-competent attorney would be able to demonstrate that to the satisfaction of a judge and jury. Storms, I'm pretty sure even if Hoid were acting as Adolin's defense counsel he'd prevail. Wait, that would be kind of awesome. And... not much else to add, everyone else has covered it all I think.

Contribution Crusade *Normal voice* It's because I see them lurking, yet still not posting. I'm pretty sure someone else made that observation before, though I could be wrong. I also believe in there being real consequences to poke votes. If you didn't want them lynched at all, don't vote on them at all. Too often elims will "poke vote" their allies early in a game for distancing.

  16. Which is doubly dumb because the Honorblade isn't bonded to the man's hand, it's bonded to his soul! That's why it dropped when Kaladin killed Szeth, but shouldn't have dropped when Szeth got his arm chopped off (spiritually). Argh! As for Kaladin's oaths, I don't think oath 4 or 5 are going to have more to do with protecting, because that's only one of the two divine attributes for the Windrunners. There's only four oaths, and he hasn't sworn anything about leading, just protecting. I expect 4+5 to have to do with accepting leadership, which means letting other people put themselves in danger on your behalf. I don't expect four oaths all in a row on how to protect people, and I expect all other Radiant oaths to balance between their two Divine Attributes.

  17. My time has come. In Spanish, the solution people came to while translating the order's names was separating them into two words. Wind Corridors - Runner translates to "Corredor" in Spanish, which means both runner and corridor/hallway. Dust Carriers - Bringer is an awkward word to translate. The closest we have is "Portador", which is someone who carries something. There are technically a word or two that correspond better to the English meaning but it would sound really bad. Filo Dancers - This one's easy. "Filo" means Edge. I'm not sure why your computer didn't translate that. Other Nominees - Alright, this is a weird one. The closest we have to Else is "Otro", which translates back to Other. Nominees on the other hand. Let me see. Caller would be really weird to translate. We don't have a single word that fits, it literally translates to "persona que llama" or person that calls. So they used "Nominador" which would be a person who designates someone/something? I'm not sure how to explain this one, but worst part is I'm not sure I would have been able to come up with anything better. Considering it has to make sense but still sound cool. Sculptors of Will - We do have a word for Shaper, "Formador", which is what is being used officially (I think). It has "Escultor" (Sculptor) as a synonym but I'm not sure why your computer would make the jump. Stone Custodians - They probably took Ward directly to Warden, which can be translated to "Guardián", which has "Custodio" as synonym, which in turn translates back to Custodian. Link Forgings - Bond translates to "Vínculo", which is easier to translate back to Link. I think that's pretty understandable, even in English they're basically the same thing. As for Forgings. Well, logically they took Smith as in, someone who forges stuff. Like in a forge. What I don't understand is why your computer translated it as the verb and not the noun. And that's it I believe. Everything else translates pretty neatly. (Actually, Windrunners translates neatly too but, polysemy)

  21. Well, as Storing Identity "makes you susceptible to all kinds of things in the Cosmere" the extrapolation is that, at the very least, it would make you less susceptible to those same things. That would be very useful already.

  22. While i like this theory, i dont want it to become the major point of Kaladin's arc. If Brandon started to explore it in WoR, it would have enough room to deal with. In second to last book though... i dont want it to interrupt the ongoing narrative about Kaladin struggles (honor, not killing people, being alone and so on). Its the same as with Shallan's kid. Its fun stuff to explore. But its too late to dive deep into it now. We have only two books left and so so so much stuff to solve even without Stormlight addiction. Id like Brandon to go with this idea for Teft. For Teft the addiction is the major point of the character arc. Stormlight addiction plot would fit him greatly. Dont add another brick of crem for Kaladin to deal with. He has already enough problems to struggle with.

  23. So for dead shard blades, there is a gem in the pommel of the blade that allows the blade to be dismissed and summoned again. What if you were able to find out what type of spren the dead blade was and somehow capture the cousin spren (that make up the plate for that particular order) in the gem? Also using the proper tyoe of gem would help. Maybe then, the dead spren would be able to somehow fuse with the companion spren and recover (not sure if oaths would still be needed or not). So if the dead blade were an honor spren, the blade would need a sapphire with a wind spren trapped inside. Maybe then you would need to take the blade to Dalinar, who does some fancy Bondsmith thing, that fuses the wind spren and the dead honor spren, using a large amount of stormlight, to revive the dead spren into a living spren. I have no idea what the side effects would be. Perhaps you end up with surge binders, but not Radiants (so no oaths).

  25. I think Gaz does need to atone for his prior actions. But that should happen off screen. We hear in a line or two about how he is sorry for what he did. Maybe we get a short scene where he runs into Kaladin again and apologizes. Maybe we find out he's quietly been helping refugees or something. Just keep it in the background.

  26. Earlier this week I dreamed I was on my morning run, down my road, and coiled in the road was a 20 foot long black snake with yellow stripes. It wasn't fat, though, just really long. I ran around it, and then it started chasing after me, trying to bite my ankles. So I did the only natural dream thing to do: Grab the snake by its neck (by which I mean the area right behind its head... snakes don't really have necks... :P) and slam it against a tree trunk. After which I picked it up (don't know how; with how big it was) and threw it off the railing which had conveniently appeared next to me. Of course, then the snake jumped back up off the ground below and strangled my friend who had also just appeared next to me. Both of them fell back down. When I was in elementary school I had a villain in my dream who was literally just the Joker with a saxophone. My subconscious self called him 'The Jazz Opera' for some reason, and his saxophone put people to sleep. I was in my house, and he walked around the corner playing his instrument, and my mom fell asleep. My 8 year old self was terrified. for some reason I didn't fall asleep, but he kept walking closer and closer, playing that saxophone, until I woke up in a cold sweat. The following night I dreamed my mother and I were at a zoo, looking at the bear exhibit. The Jazz Opera turned the corner, and my mom fell asleep again. He walked closer and closer again, staring at me... and then the bear in the cage reached his neck out of the bars, and well, ate him. Just... CHOMP and gone. It was like the bear grew a giraffe neck for a second there. Needless to say, I was relieved. I haven't dreamed about The Jazz Opera since. It seems my subconscious has effectively killed him off.

  27. I'm of a couple minds on this. After a couple days, and finishing Black Panther last night, here are my thoughts: I agree that this situation is a little different than Heath Ledger's, but to be fair that is most people's frame of reference for this situation. Carrie Fisher's passing is also very similar, but Lucasfilm was able to take a third path that the MCU can't. On the other hand, as a black man who grew up without a black superhero on the big screen (I had Static Shock* and John Stewart's Green Lantern from the DCAU), I'd most certainly rather see the role of T'Challa recast than anything else. Yes, Chadwick was brilliant in - dare I say born for - the role. But the role also transcended him. T'Challa means too much to our culture, or legacy, or future to simply leave behind. Could they find another character to step into the role of Black Panther? Absolutely. Heck, Shuri's been the Black Panther multiple times in the comics, and I'd totally be down for her taking the mantle here. But T'Challa is more than the costume. A new character in the role will bring a new energy and potentially a new philosophy as well. Dick Grayson as Batman doesn't have the same atmosphere as Bruce Wayne's Batman - heck, look at how different each of the Robins are/were, and how different they've turned out. Miles Morales' take on Spider-Man is VERY different from Peter Parker's (in any universe, but the most notable example is Into The Spider-Verse); and MCU Peter Parker ultimately has to learn to carve his own path, despite being Tony's superhero successor. This is rarely, if ever, a bad thing. But I don't think it's the thing we need right now. We need a Black Panther who can stand with the titans of his world and speak to the titans in ours. We don't need a legacy character, we need a king. On a storytelling level, the first Black Panther movie was about legacy and wasn't a Superhero Origin Story. Replacing the role would not only repeat the themes of legacy - something the latest Spider-Man trilogy is already covering as well as something Falcon and the Winter Soldier will clearly have to address - but it also by its nature makes the sequel an origin story. Novel in concept, but repetitive in realization. Heck, going off of that, replacing T'Challa may end up with something along the lines of the "Newt Effect," from Brandon's latest Q&A. Basically it's when a sequel undoes all the work and/or emotional weight of the movies before it. (Think the Sequel Trilogy of Star Wars to the Original Trilogy.) Endgame ended on a high note for the Wakandan King. To announce that he died off-screen or is "too busy ruling Wakanda" to deal with whatever threat is happening/help out the new top warrior of the country is something that would clearly be out of place, especially in a sequel. Also, go watch Black Panther ASAP. It's one of the best superhero films of all time, despite the shoddy CGI. (Although I do find it a little racist how your mother demeaned it down to "just cast another black man." There's more to this than just "any black person will do.") *I still believe that Static Shock should've had his own movie over ten years ago. And while he DEFINITELY deserved a tv show before Black Lightning (which YMMV on, since Black Lightning is the originator of the "Black Guy Electric Powers" trope and who Static was ultimately based off of), I'm happy CW didn't screw up Static...which is also weird to say, considering Arrow is my favorite superhero show, and the first two seasons of Black Lightning were phenomenal.

  31. For me it depends on how big of a role he plays. If he becomes a major player, I would expect that we see some of his character growth. If he continues to be "one of Shallan's interchangeable Lightweaver squires" then I'm fine with the character growth having happened off-screen. We're definitely at the point now where there's lots of Radiants whose names we don't even *know*, and Gaz's had a year between Oathbringer and RoW to improve, so that could have happened. We don't know his Truths, or if he's said any. I definitely don't think Radiant status is given as a reward for being a good person. Dalinar was a radiant before the end of Oathbringer, while he still literally didn't have the memories of what he had done and couldn't take responsibility for it. I think Teft was already a radiant at the point he sold his coat for firemoss? Not sure on that one.

Theoretically, you should be able to store your memories of a books ending in your coppermind, and then proceed to reread that book and be shocked by the ending all over again, thus making it much easier to wait for new books as you can keep enjoying the old ones just as when you first discovered them.

  34. Well, in that case, I guess we can't blame people like Roshone and Dalinar for committing foul deeds while in the service of others. Roshone simply had no choice in sending Tien off to die in a border dispute. After all, Roshone knew his Highlord needed more recruits. Poor Roshone was forced to act the way he did. Dalinar had to burn Rathalas to ground, regardless of the massive amount of innocents inside. His brother, the king of Alethkar, wanted the problem solved. Are Dalinar's actions seen as permissible even though he did not pursue alternative solutions, such as only executing the conspirators? At what point is someone unable to use the excuse: "I was simply following orders"? All three men went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to fulfilling the commands of their superior. Taking away personal responsibility is something that Odium or Moash would advocate for. It is possible for Gaz to be redeemed but he must first accept that he was personally responsible for a lot of cruelty. I am unsure why so many people are willing to give Gaz a pass when he should be, at the very least, held accountable for his actions.

  36. I think @Zelly has it right, and there's evidence in WoR (page numbers from Kindle version). Something happened in her father's garden when she was very young. From an early conversation with Pattern on the ship: From another conversation with Pattern: Hoid speaking to young Shallan at the Middlefest: There's two possible interpretations for "The lights going out, life drained from them." 1. She sucked in stormlight from spheres. 2. She saw lights in Shadesmar going out, meaning real lives lost. I tend towards 2.

  37. I'm guessing she did something innocent as a child, but with terrible consequences. Like lightweaving an illusion to trick someone, except it went all wrong and set in motion the downfall of her family. I'm sad that the impression is that whatever the deeper truth is, it's apparently painful. Like, even more painful than murdering her own parents. Is this just Shallan or all Lightweaver truths/oaths not just a reflection about themselves, but a dark one? It'd be nice for her final truth to be something like, "Despite my deeds I'm not a bad person."

  38. * Won't happen until the back 5 books, but Kaladin ends up with Lift. He will have had time to heal mentally and she will be grown up. They are what, 13 and 21 right now? 20 and 28 wouldn't be too weird. * Shallan and Adolin will have a child before the end of Book 5. That child will have the most amazing hair. I am guessing a daughter, as all of the other very young children are male so far. * Kelek will be the next Herald to die, and will die in Book 4. He has had more screen time than anyone other than Nale, Shallash and Taln. Killing Vedel or Paliah would have no emotional punch as we don't know where they are and haven't had anything from them. * Ishar will be a major antagonist before the end of Book 5 * Kaladin swears the 4th ideal in Book 4 and the 5th in book 5. 4th ideal is acknowledging that you can't protect everyone. * A major faction of Singers breaks off of Odium's forces and declares neutrality in the conflict before the end of Book 5 * Urithiru is activated by the end of Book 4 * Someone we don't expect (i.e. not Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Renarin or Jasnah) will manifest plate by the end of Book 4 * The Diagram will be revealed as Cultivation's tool to kill Odium. All other goals will lead up to that. * We will have a surprise cosmere crossover by the end of Book 5 on par with Nightblood showing up at the end of Words of Radiance. Perhaps Kelsier revealed as the leader of the Ghostbloods.

  40. So bronze does what we think it does. I wonder if they have figured out copper yet. Wine made from grapes? How ridiculous. Renarin with the save again. I wonder what that ability is. It reminds me of an external version of electrum. Renarin really is the Truthfinder.

  43. First, i think, Adolin isnt very important Stormlight character. Key moment indicating this for me was that Brandon didnt intent to bring Adolin in Part 1 of OB, but beta testers pointed at it and he added him there. This, along with the fact that Adolin already was a secondary character, made me feel Brandon doesnt see Adolin irreplaceable. Second, i think, he will play certain role in the global scheme of things. Mayala mini plot and him killing Sadeas point at it. Both points make his future very blurred and unpredictable. He may turn a bad guy. He may die in Book 4 or 5. He may revive Maya and become Edgedancer and live through the all 10 books. Or do the same but without being an Edgedancer. To me certain points in the lot and character relationships point at high possibility of certain plot point - in book 5 and further Adolin will go on solo adventure with some purpose. Will it be revival of Maya or something else - i dont know. I can hardly see him having a personal plot without him becoming and independent character. Him being connected to Shallan and her big plot line kinda presses down his own plot line. To me he will always feel like just the part of Shallan arc until he will separate himself from her. And i think, this separation will happen during or after Shadesmar trip.

  44. If Stormlight Archive was written by every Dystopian Teen writer ever... (No disrespect to fans of the genre, but I find it incredibly repetitive and reeks of jumping on the Suzanne Collins bandwagon. Hunger Games I believe is actually well written). Well, first off, Shallan would be the main character for the entire series. Having a male main character? That's just silly. Females are so much more interesting than males. Already done in the source work, but she would have an insanely tragic backstory. She would be much more obviously mentally scarred by the backstory, and either work for the Evil Alethi Government, or just live with its corruption. A catalyst will ensue and she is suddenly on the run and fighting the government. Predictable plot twists ensue as the already-shown-to-be-insanely-corrupt government is revealed to be... insanely corrupt. Didn't see that one coming. Shallan will have a mentor, who will die. Grieving over the loss and adding 55 pounds to her emotional baggage, she will encounter a similarly tortured male who is also a rebel, may possess tattoos, and generally is the edgy type. For humor's sake, I will suggest Kaladin to be this male character. They will instantly hook up with no explanation, randomly make out (or have sex, depending on how "edgy" the book is) at very awkward points, and bare their respective backstories to one another. Somehow despite both Kaladin and Shallan having lasting emotional trauma, their love is so powerful that it instantly heals all of their psychological problems. In comes the boy next door. Again for humor's sake, I suggest Adolin to be this character. Shallan will suddenly become confused as she inexplicably also harbors feelings for him, despite never having evidence to suggest this in the book. She will string both Kaladin and Adolin along before finally choosing one (which one varies according to the author. It's pretty much a 50/50 chance, so flip a coin). They will proceed to make out again (or have more sex), defeat the Evil Emperor with sheer grit and pluckiness, and live happily ever after. There will also be obligatory deaths, just to provoke the reader to throw the book against the wall. Dalinar and Jasnah will die. Whichever suitor Shallan didn't pick will die (so those shippers will shut up), and Shallan and her chosen suitor will proceed to have Babies Ever After. As for the other characters, Sadeas would be the Evil Chancellor to Emperor Elhokar, Dalinar would be the leader of the rebellion, Renarin wouldn't be in the book, Jasnah would be a tactical advisor, and Bridge Four would be a rebel squad under Kaladin's command. Hoid would be a mystical hobo that gives Shallan random advice whilst she is caught in a moral quandary. Bonus points if he is inexplicably black. Odium would be a sequel hook that is not explained for three books. Rant over. Proceed with your lives. EDIT: Thanks to Grey Pilgrim for reminding me about the awful abomination that is First Person Present Tense. Predictably, this book would have it as well. EDIT the Second: The book would not be called The Stormlight Archive. That's too long for our fragile reader heads. It would simply be called Stormlight, to confuse readers into reading it because it's similar to Twilight.

  45. I've set this up as a place for you clever people to discuss and create new roles for future games. Hopefully, this will become a list of well balanced roles that GMs can use in future games. If you post a role here, it is free game for anyone to use in their games, unless you specifically state otherwise. Be forewarned, creating balanced roles is incredibly difficult. You need to take into account how they will play with other roles and how they will effect the balance of the game. Creating roles requires running them through scenarios time and again, just to make sure that they don't break the game. No role should be so strong that the opposing faction can't stand against it. I'll let you get to it, but here are a few reference materials to give you some baseline ideas to work from. The Wiki actually has a pretty decent breakdown for the game in general. While this game specific Wiki has a ton of roles already in use and also gives some ideas of their playability. One final note, feel free to create roles and games for any of Sanderson's worlds. Eventually, we'll hopefully have enough roles to easily play anywhere in the Cosmere! Update: The reworked rules and Formats are up! Please keep these in mind while designing your games. The better you know which format you're planning for, the better other people's feedback can be! Long Game Elimination Format Rules With plenty of time and a lot of complexity, the Long Games typically have time for in-depth analysis and plenty of roleplaying opportunities. The drawback being that they typically take a lot longer to play out. Players: 18+ Game Duration: 3+ weeks Game Cycle Duration: 96 hours max. Turns: days and nights, each 48 hours max. Rollover Time: TBD by the GM What to Expect: lots of roleplay more chances for in-depth manipulation lots of complexity high levels of analysis Mid-Range Game Elimination Format Rules A middle ground style of game. The Mid-Range games run fairly quickly, but not nearly as fast as a Quick Fix. This allows for more roleplaying and analysis than a Quick Fix, but less than a Long Game. Players: 15-30 Game Duration: 2-3 weeks Game Cycle Duration: 48 hours Turns: days and nights can be combined into one full cycle 48 hours in length or separated for each to be 24 hours long Rollover Time: TBD by the GM What to Expect: fairly fast pace some complexity a bit of roleplay moderate analysis inactive player warnings/deaths Quick Fix Elimination Format Rules The Quick Fix games follow a faster paced schedule than the other elimination games. This format will have fewer roles than the other games, and be less heavily invested in role playing. Players: 8-16 Game Duration: 1-2 weeks Game Cycle Duration: 24 hours Turns: days and nights combined into one full cycle Rollover Time: TBD by the GM What to Expect: very fast pace basic roleplay simple structure basic analysis one post/PM per cycle inactive player warnings/deaths Game Creation: Table of Contents First of the Sun/Sixth of the Dusk Twei/Eol/Piff - Trappers v.
