  1. This is an article from our wonderful friends at Cosmere.es, the Spanish cosmere fansite, translated into English for you to read. The original article is here, written by the lovely Ysondra. Today, I want to share with you guys a really special interview for me. Back in 2006, shortly before Brandon published in Spain and before I discovered him. I had a personal blog and spent a lot of time playing something called MUD and World of Warcraft. I’ve always been fascinated by illustrations for fantasy and science fiction works, and my blog had a space dedicated to listing my favorite artists. I had two separate lists: one for established artists, and one for younger artists who I thought showed great promise. One of the artists on my second list was someone called “Breathing2004”, who I discovered thanks to a Blizzard fanart contest. He was an impressive artist, and I was in love with his art from the first fanart I saw. It’s a small world, and 14 years later, Jian Guo did the covers for the Chinese editions of Brandon Sanderson’s books (among other popular authors) and now he’s working with Dragonsteel on the tenth anniversary editions. Top left: Elantris Chinese cover, by Jian Guo. Top right: The Emperor's Soul Chinese cover, by Jian Guo. Bottom: The Way of Kings Chinese cover, by Jian Guo. Just like we all enjoyed the illustrations he did for the capital letters at the start of each Warbreaker chapter last year, this year we get to see his interpretation of the chapter arches in each chapter of the 10th anniversary edition of The Way of Kings which is funded by a Kickstarter. [Editor's note: the Kickstarter ends Friday! -Eric] Big thanks to Isaac Stewart who gave us the chapter arches images from the Prologue which you can see below when we talk more about Jian Guo’s work with Dragonsteel. We want to give a special thanks to Javier Altayó. This interview would not be possible without the help of this marvelous translator. Altayó was born in 1978 in Sabadell and received his degree in Mandarin translation from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He also studied Chinese language and culture at the University of Peking (Beijing, China) and has lived in Taipei, Taiwan for more than a decade where he works as a teacher and a translator. We want to thank him again, from the bottom of our hearts, for making this interview possible. If you like science fiction, you’ll surely know his work (though you might not have noticed) because he translated the majority of Cixin Liu’s work to Spanish for Nova including The Three Body Problem, The Dark Forest, Ball Lightning, and The Wandering Earth, and we can’t wait for his next translation of The Supernova Era which comes out October 15th. We also want to send a heartfelt thank you to Jian Guo for not only giving us his time, but also sharing with us some exclusive sketches that you can enjoy while reading along. Now, please join me in getting to know Jian Guo. I hope you’re left as fascinated by his art as we have been! You’ll discover his art ranges from the faceted style that resembles stained glass to art inspired by contemporary painters such as Picasso. If you like his work, please make sure to check out his DeviantArt and ArtStation accounts, because they’re impressive. Celestial Palace, by Jian Guo Interview with Jian Guo, artist for the 19th anniversary editions of Warbreaker and The Way of Kings Translated into Spanish by Xavier Altayó. Translated to English by Bea. To start, I wanted to say thank you for giving us your time. I’ve been in love with your work since 2006 or 2007 when I found you in the World of Warcraft forums. I had a blog (which I still have) where I put my favorite professional illustrators and promising artists. You were among the promising artists, and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to interview you, not only because of your work for the Chinese covers of Sanderson’s books, but because of what your art means to me. Even though we don’t know Madarin, Sasori and I have several Chinese editions of Sanderson’s books at home just to admire the covers. Of the ones we have, I have to say Elantris, Warbreaker, and The Way of Kings are our favorites. Botanica Xu signed our copy of Elantris and also sent us one of your autographs because they knew how much we liked your art! Ysondra’s collection of Chinese books! From left to right, Chinese editions illustrated by Jian Guo: The Way of Kings, Warbreaker, Elantris, The Emperor’s Soul, and Infinity Blade Cosmere.es: Before we came to know you as Jian Guo, many of us knew you as Breathing2004, but we didn’t know much else about you. Could you tell us a little about yourself? Where did you get the nickname Breathing2004? In 2004 I was trying to upload things to a website called GFXartist and I realized I didn’t have a username. My intention with my paintings is that looking at them is as easy as breathing, so from there I took “Breathing” and since I had to use letters and numbers, I ended up calling myself “Breathing2004.” Cosmere.es: The first illustration of yours I saw was a fanart for World of Warcraft in 2006 or 2007. This, along with the rest of your portfolio, makes me ask: what influence have video games, fantasy literature, and science fiction had on you? What are your favorite books and video games? I guess my first contact with quality science fiction was through a Chinese magazine called Science Fiction World. Video games came later, when I had a computer. I think my first online video game had to be World of Warcraft. I loved it from the first moment and even still, it holds a special place with me. Because I loved it, I would do art related to it from time to time. I didn’t know this was called fanart until later. As for science fiction, I like Asimov novels (for example The Caves of Steel, The Last Question), Tales of Earthsea by Ursula K. Leguin, and the Dark Elf Trilogy by R. A. Salvatore; as for video games, I have a weakness for the games by Black Isle Studios and Blizzard. Sci-Fi World Magazine covers, by Jian Guo. From left to right: ABdiel, Hercules, Pegasus, The Fallen Angel. Cosmere.es: When would you say your career started? When you started doing fanart for World of Warcraft? Or were you known before then? I’ve liked to draw since I was a kid. At the beginning I was limited to coloring or coping, of course. I didn’t start learning digital drawing until I graduated university and started to work. I bought my first Wacom drawing tablet with my paycheck and started taking my first steps following tutorials in magazines. The first place I uploaded work to was a Chinese website called huoshen.com. Later, I went to foreign sites like “cgtalk” or “gfxartist”. At the time, everything I did was original work. I didn’t start with fan art until I became a fan of World of Warcraft. The story of Pandaria, Emperor Shaohao, by Jian Guo Cosmere.es: Could you tell us about your creative process from the inspiration to the sketches to sitting down to start working and finally the finished product? At first I conceived and matured all my drawings in my mind before I sat at my computer. I didn’t take any time in between. So basically, I did it all in a row which left the concept and composition of the work very simplistic. Over time, I developed a habit of sketching on the computer and drawing in layers. The commercial commissions I’ve taken in the last few years have been especially helpful with integrating my own ideas into what the commissioner has requested in their reference material or textual descriptions. Oni Tensei, by Jian Guo Cosmere.es: How would you describe your style’s evolution? How did you start making these spectacular illustrations that look like stained glass? When I first started digital illustration, I set out to imitate the expressive techniques popular at the time: thick, realistic strokes. Later, when I found myself stuck, I I took advantage of my studies in university and my previous work experience in architectural design which had centered on flat, geometric shapes. I tried to use the techniques I already knew to evolve my style. At the same time, I looked for inspiration in the polychrome stained glass common in European churches, in art nouveau, in art deco, and in the ornamental motifs from traditional Chinese painting so bit by bit I could find a direction that, combined with the requirements of narrative expression, led me to my current style. Some work inspired by Tolkien, by Jian Guo Cosmere.es: How did you come into contact with Brandon Sanderson’s work? Do you have a favorite? The publisher of The Way of Kings offered me the chance to draw its cover while they were working on its publication. At the time, I had done very few covers. It all went really fast: I didn’t have time to read the whole text and I had to get an idea from the key fragments they gave me. But by the end, it didn’t seem to be a bad method. This was my first contact with Sanderson’s work. After I received a copy of the book and sat down to read the whole novel, I was completely fascinated. In the following years, they translated several more of his books and I did the covers of some of them. My favorites are The Emperor’s Soul and Warbreaker. The former I like because of its Asian influence and due its cute and strong protagonist. The latter captivated me with its chromatic magic and the contrast of the two main protagonists. It’s also very well written. Jian Guo work in the Tenth Anniversary leatherbound for The Way of Kings. Image from Dragonsteel Entertainment. Progress shot is to the left, final is to the right. You can buy this poster here. It's pretty great! Infinity Blade cover, by Jian Guo. Left is the progress shot, the right is the final version. Cosmere.es: We are in love with the covers you’ve done, not just for the Cosmere, but also for Infinity Blade. But, the work you’ve done for the 10th anniversary edition of Warbreaker with the capital letters is impressive. How was working with Isaac Stewart and the Dragonsteel team? I’m very grateful to Sanderson and Isaac for entrusting me with the design of several important motifs. Isaac in particular is extremely patient and also very precise in asking for what he wants. He’s there to guide me during each commission so by the end of the piece, the final product is the fruit of our joint effort. He’s been a huge help. Jian Guo's Warbreaker cover. Left is a progress shot, right is the final version. Drop cap for E for the Warbreaker leatherbound, by Jian Guo. Different letters appear at the beginning of each chapter. by Jian Guo. Left is an in-progress shot, the right is the final. Cosmere.es: What is the situation with fantasy and science fiction literature in China? Are they heavily edited genres? How many people read them? Are they considered part of the general literature? How are they received by the public? They published a ton of science fiction and fantasy books at the beginning of the year from both Chinese and foreign authors. Any book related to big cinematic releases or that has received an important award in the specialized worlds for literature also makes its way here. Since the success of Cixin Liu’s Three Body Problem Trilogy translation on the global level, various other Chinese works have been translated and met success on the international market. In regards to the Chinese market, despite the limitation of prices and the lack of robust alternatives, I can’t say reading physical books is very popular. Instead, excellent fantasy titles are accessed through online reading platforms or other internet platforms. They often gain public recognition and then are adapted to series, movies, or games. Specific Chinese sub-genres have also emerged: xiuxian stories (stories where the hero trains to reach immortality) chuanyue stories (stories where the hero suddenly finds themself transported to another time or world), and zhongtian stories (stories about everyday agricultural life or farmers) all of which are interesting. Fantasy and science fiction have slowly been gaining ground and have become important genres however fantasy is seen as more serious and science fiction is considered pure escapism and is popular with young people. The Three Body Problem cover by Jian Guo Cosmere.es: Which other authors, Chinese or worldwide, would you like to work with? Of the forgein works that get to China, the majority of them are from authors who write in English, but I’d like to work with writers from all over the world. I don’t want to limit myself to English language authors. I want to draw beautiful and interesting covers and illustrations for authors who write in whichever language. But, to do that, you have to recognize the huge amount of work for translators, who open the door to these opportunities to see other worlds of fantasy. Arthur C. Clarke covers by Jian Guo Cosmere.es: We’re getting more and more books from Chinese, or Chinese-origin people in Europe and the US, which has been cool because reading books from diverse sources gives us an enriching point of view. We’ve seen your illustrations inspired by Cixin Liu’s work. Will you do the official covers for his new novels? Cixin Liu’s work usually has several editions in China. I would love to have the opportunity to illustrate one of his magnificent books. And I would also, humbly, like to enrich the works of other excellent writers as much as I can. Cosmere.es: Which other Chinese authors who are unknown in the West do you suggest? I usually read forgein literature, but not too long ago I read Tales of Tarsylia by Wu Miao and Sishige, the new compilation of stories by Qitongren, both of which I liked a lot. For about a year I’ve followed the podcast series Desert Wolf by Kennedy Xu, Lord of the Mysteries by Yuan Ye, and the series Ghost Blows out the Light by Zhang Muye. And all of Liu’s work is amazing, without having to say. Cosmere.es: Thank you so much for your time and sharing your impressions with us. We sincerely hope to continue enjoying your art and that you continue to give life to the Cosmere. Aside from everything we’ve said and before we say goodbye, is there anything else you’d like to mention? I wish to continue having the chance to contribute my particular style of illustration to more amazing work and to thereby bring the cultures of the East and West closer together by portraying the beauty of the world. Sanderson’s work is outstanding, as we all know, so I look forward to working with him in the future. That’s been our interview with Jian Guo! We hope you all have enjoyed it. I have to say it was a challenge to decide which images to include between the hundreds he’s published in his galleries over the years. Even though we couldn’t include more, he’s done a lot more covers for other writers and other, beautiful original work which you can see on his DeviantArt (don’t miss it! You’ll love it!) where he’s the most active. Having the chance to talk with Jian Guo after so many years as a fan of his art, thanks to the generosity of Javier Altayó, has been a little dream come true. So, if you liked this interview, don’t forget to say thank you to him for making this all possible. Thank you, Xavier, we love you! And thank you Cosmere.es and Ysondra for letting us post this in English, and Bea for translating! -Eric

  2. Preface, this is going to be long but it's important. I'm new to the forums and haven't had a chance to get to know people personally but I wanted to create this topic because I've seen some discussion surrounding Gavilar that I wasn't comfortable with. Rather than continuing in those threads I'm creating this to center the discussion of Gavilar and his treatment of those close to him here. If you feel like you are in an abusive relationship, Trust your gut, you can get support here: 1−800−799−7233 First I'm going to refer to some of the National Domestic Violence Hotline's criteria for abuse that I believe are relevant to the Prologue chapter: Just because someone does something that is on this list does not mean it is abuse. There can be a single instance of abuse or continued abuse. However, I think we can establish that the severity of a single action is what would make the action abusive, whereas continued actions from the list of criteria qualifies as abuse. Prologue: This is setting the reader up for what is coming. It's establishing that Navani isn't feeling like she belongs at Gavilar's side. BS notes that her anxieties/insecurities have gotten worse lately. In a healthy relationship she would be able to express this to her husband and he would be able to reassure her anxieties. This does not happen. This is number (2) from the segment above. He does not trust her. More evidence of lack of trust And more. Clearly this is a pattern, yeah? One time is circumstance, two times is coincidence, three times is a patter. Brandon is drilling this lack of trust from Gavilar into us. This is clearly (3) he has threatened her without resorting to physical abuse... yet. A glimpse into why she may deserve the abuse (spoiler, no one deserves the abuse, that's a sign of abuse). Number (7) he is accusing her of cheating, and is jealous of her relationship with Dalinar. No matter how founded it is. This is (4) he is humiliating her by twisting a once compassionate gesture into mockery. He is blaming her for the abuse (5) Wow, this is a lot all in one. He is calling her names, belittling her, and humiliating her for something she loves (1 and 4). Then he concludes with telling her that she isn't worthy of their relationship (8) This is the only quote I've pulled that I feel like is any stretch to call it abuse. But her internal monologue here "Don't let his lies become your truth. Fight it" Screams that he has been gaslighting her for an extended period of time. Here's what I find the most important part of the chapter, it's not evidence of actual abuse. It's showing how we normalize it. Our society and many of us normalize the behaviors I listed above. We say what Navani says that this was an "argument" and that they "bring out the worst in eachother". This is not the case, this is abuse, we need to recognize it for what it is, and not be afraid to call it that. We can have a whole long discussion about the justification or rationalization of what it is, but that just enables abusers. Allowing abusers to get away with these kinds of behaviors only protects them. We as a society need to do better by providing support for their victims and safe exits for them to leave their abuse. I'm not an professional in the field or anything close to an expert. Please, if you feel like there is abuse in your relationship, Trust your gut, reach out to someone -- You can reach out to me if you want. If you're looking for professional support you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1−800−799−7233 If you are being abused or have been abused you need to know this. You do not deserve it, there is nothing that can make that true. No one deserves abuse.

  3. I've been enjoying the time skip very much - it feels fresh and exciting, like really catching up with these characters, learning something new about them again. It's great for me, because whatever was skipped, no matter how cool it sounds, is what Brandon decided was less exciting than whatever happens in the rest of the book. I'm psyched!

  4. There was a discussion in the Discord about the time gap between Warbreaker and Stormlight, so I decided to PM Brandon about it. The messages: Or as copy-pasted text: Not sure if this was already known or not, but I didn't find anything on the Arcanum about it, so I figured I'd ask him. Not sure why Elantris affects this. Unless he just means it as an example of timeline things being subject to change.

  5. We all face the same end. Someone was dead and it wasn't Maris's fault. He glared at the email from the PIs. His supervisor had forwarded it to him, which made it twice that Maris had to read that Ruler-damned notification. Not like it had done him anything wrong, but still. Tara Night was dead. Which was unnerving. He'd volunteered himself as a candidate for suspicion because he was a sarkastic rulo (he liked that term; his supervisor hailed from Sel and threw that term as if it was ashfall) and had felt that he wasn't interested in dignifying a performative expression of suspicion from Grace Cett (Lord Ruler, were there Cetts even in Silverlight?) - among other reasons. Namely that he'd wanted to kick the hornet's nest by seeing if anyone really wanted Illwei dead, and just the sort of what-would-happen if there was a tie in the voting. Not everyone liked ties, after all. Information was information. And his supervisor would go on and on about how the task of adding to knowledge was by proceeding a little at a time. Step by incremental step. (And all Maris was keenly aware of was how much he didn't know: how whatever they would glean, even from the Ashyn project, would be a mere drop in an ocean of ignorance.) 'Other reasons.' Most of which boiled down to the fact he was a contrary, sarkastic rulo. Said in Kadrim's voice, dryly, as the old watchmaker fixed yet another Heron timepiece that some noble had botched and tossed back to them. Past and present bled together. By the mists, he needed more sleep. Unpaid intern work didn't really lend itself to the best work-life balance, but the things they did in pursuit of knowledge... Which boiled down to: "Academia is a toxic trash-heap," as his predecessor had said, two days before she gave notice. Which Maris was beginning to appreciate, even though he saw it as just another step into a much bigger world than Scadrial. He hadn't even known that his own world was Scadrial, until he'd left. What would've become of him in that watchmaker's workshop? And now it seemed that sabotage on the Ashyn project was rapidly escalating to "people getting killed" and Maris absolutely felt out of his depth. By the Lord Ruler, he had expected the jockeying, the politicking, the way the PIs played favourites, and the supervisors dispensed scut work to the lowest of the interns. What he had not expected was for there to be anything worth killing over. He thought of tendering. But if he did, that was it. Any route into the university needed experience. The Ashyn project was Maris's last and best hope, Lord Ruler curse it all. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers. Right. He just had to make sense of how by the mistwraiths Tara Night had ended up being there on that fateful night. There were two votes on him, he was certain of it. Three on Tara. What had happened to the missing vote? Faleast muttered about it like Maris would've had any Deepness-cursed idea about what went down. Maris racked his brains but he was pretty certain he didn't know, and chalked it down to foul play. He disagreed with Kondrea that it was entirely Illwei though. Perhaps it was Illwei. Or perhaps it was to pin the blame on himself or Grace Cett. After all, wasn't there that scurrilous rumour a couple weeks ago that Grace Cett and the lamentably belated Tara Night were half-siblings or something of that sort? (Maris hadn't paid close attention. It sounded like the work of one of those half-boxing drama-soaked romances that Lord Ashlen Findelaire had so often read at their gatherings, back in the day. One of his supervisor's words sufficed to describe Ashlen: kayana.) Well. Maris had no idea what was going on, and in the Lord Ruler's name, he was determined to find out, to do well on the Ashyn project, and to impress the PIs enough to gain their support for his university application in Silverlight. (Preferably with full funding, thank you.) Edit: Edited out 'damnation' because I forgot the word I had meant to use was verboten according to 17S's filter. A more family friendly word 'curse' has been edited in.

  6. I find this to be very interesting. The way I understand it, there is one last Windspren willing to bond, but can't do so. This seems to indicate that the potential Radiant chosen by this spren is the one unwilling (or unable) to bond. What seems most likely to me is that it's Rock. The fact that he is holding something back from Bridge Four, combined with the fact that he has to deal with tremendous gulit would probably make it hard for him to form a bond. Logic tells me Rock is the best choice (as far as we know right now). But I actually would want it to be Rlain. He has been teased all throughout Oathbringer as a potential Radiant but hat to be kept in the Background in order for Venli to shine. Now we could get to see a truly epic arc for him, hopefully including a meeting with Venli (maybe even a rescue mission to get her to Urithiru?). Considering that the Listeners and Singers are becoming more and more central as the story progresses, seeing more of them become Radiant sooner rather than later would be amazing.

  7. We recently got this intriguing passage. Conjecture implies that this silvery metal is aluminum. However the other property of the spear, stormlight draining, implies that some sort of fabrail is at work here. This is a conundrum as aluminum would prevent any fabrail from working. Somebody suggested to me that maybe the spears just have sides coated with this but I don't think that works. Kaladin and his Windrunners would have long since grown proficient at severing the spearhead and leaving the fused with an aluminum stick. This leads me to the belief that the aluminum is actually part of the fabrail and that has certain implications for how it works. We know that aluminum resists all forms of investiture. I am fairly confident that Kaladin will never manage to lash an ingot of aluminum. We see various uses for this property in many shardworlds(particularly on scadrail). The question that has bugged me for a while is why? How is it that aluminum does this. I think I have an answer. Think of kinetic investiture like electrical charge. Things that are already invested are much harder to effect with investiture. Kaladin actually notes something like this in this very chapter when thinking about lashing his Sylspear. Similarly you can't really overcharge a battery(without a lot of power and then it tends to blow up) and if you break a circuit it stops working as electrons don't want to be concentrated in too small an area. Taking the similarity one stop further what if aluminum is a conductor of investiture? This would explain how they manage to drain stormlight out of a radiant. Connect a gemstone to some aluminum and the stone will pull the investiture out of the radiant and into the stone. Cut the stone right to make sure it leaks easily and you can expend most of radian'ts power into the air. This would also explain scadrail spoilers. People who are good at undergraduate physics and everyone else please correct my mistakes.

  8. I mentioned this in my general "reactions to the latest chapters", but I thought the idea might deserve a thread on its own. Kaladin needs to reach rock bottom before he is able to swear his next ideal. He is so strong and hard headed that he is unable to bend or open up to new insight. I think he will just become more depressed, sleepless and frustrated until he breaks and realizes what he needs to do. It is so typical for burnout syndrome. Check out his symptoms here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/high-octane-women/201311/the-tell-tale-signs-burnout-do-you-have-them If Kaladin really hits rock bottom, I hope this will be what he needs to build himself up from solid ground and progress with his ideals. It is typical for burnout syndrome that the one afflicted is the last one to realize it. They become less reliable, more forgetful, and not as awesome in their job as before. And a very typical symptom is insomnia. Kaladin also has done everything in the How-to-get-burnout-syndrome-handbook. Being over zealous and very good at his job. Working double shifts. Taking on more and more responsibility. Not very good at delegating. Often, people report that if if weren't for their hitting rock bottom after getting burnout, they never would have found themselves and progressed. So I keep hoping that Kaladin will crash, and hope it will not become too dramatic. (Oh, well, I know, It's Sanderson)

  9. We recently got shown some more artwork that will be included in the Way of Kings leatherbound. One of these pages shows how the bridge crews work, and it has some captions written in women's script. Of course, the images we have aren't of the best quality, and we'll surely get higher quality ones later, but when has that ever stopped us? Here are the images we have of the page: Here's what I've been able to translate so far:

  10. Gavilar's behaviour in this prologue was abusive - I don't think that's particularly debatable. However this is a fantasy book and we don't have all the information. He could have been possessed, he could have a mental illness we're not aware of or he could have recently undergone some unknown incredible trauma None of these options would make his behaviour OK, BUT they would make it understandable and could cause the reader to be sympathetic to him - similar to how many of us find ourselves sympathising with Dalinar despite his war crimes. Stepping outside of fantasy, in real life many abusers have other serious problems that have contributed to their behaviour, that's not to say that whatever the abuser has endured somehow makes their behaviour ok BUT it is to say that life isn't black and white.

  11. @Dracnor, @Knight Oblivion thank you both, that's sweet. I didn't write this for the upvotes, rather because I wanted to steer conversation in a direction that I think can do some good/be more productive. Not enough to be honest. I read the chapter and felt sick by what Gavilar was doing, and felt the urgency to analyze it in a way that I think many who didn't will now be able to recognize the abuse as such. I don't agree with this sentiment, I felt like people in other threads were dismissing or not recognizing these actions as abuse -- It's why I wrote this. Unless more people chime in I think it's a matter of opinion. I spoke to this in the other thread you made this comment but I'll say something different here. Does it really matter? Sure we are curious as humans and want explanations. But having them doesn't change the actions. Gavilar abused Navani, now unless we are truly given an explanation for why he did this (other than the one he gave, I already showed how his "rationale" for some of the abuse was abuse itself) then I don't think this question matters. Let's talk about the Blackthorn for a minute. In WoK we are introduced to Dalinar as this paragon of virtue who is held in high esteem by those with Honor but looked down upon by the Alethi for it. Additionally, the Alethi seem to praise his warrior days as the Blackthorn. We see Dalinar engage in combat at the end of WoK and in WoR and become disgusted by the bloodlust, to the point that he questions his own capacity to lead. Then we get OB where we really get to see who the Blackthorn was, and we are disgusted by him. So is Dalinar, we learn that he was consumed by alcoholism to escape his own sins (mostly killing his wife, but there's PTSD and disgust at himself too). We like Queen Fen and others in world question his virtue. But, then we're shown something important. Dalinar was not this disgusting human, he was being manipulated by a shard and the unmade to do what he does. For many of us we accept this reasoning, and allow ourselves to forgive him. Some may not. Ok, how does this relate to Gavilar? Well if we are shown some magical reasoning for his abusive tendencies then I am absolutely ok with going down these arguments of whether or not he's redeemable. We haven't been given this, anything we can say is all speculation. My theory for why is Gavilar being abusive and how he got there? He is a megalomaniac, he was satisfied with uniting Alehtkar and having Navani as his bride. Then through the SoH he learned that the world was a much bigger place, and so his true nature was shown. He lusted for power and would lord his power over all those around him. You may not agree with my opinion, but we don't have enough to go off of at this point. We've had one new piece of information showing his abuse, and for now it's enough to condemn him as an abuser. However, given the magic of this universe we all love, he is still redeemable. But only through magic.

  12. So I've just taken a dive and read this entire thread. Maybe this'll provide a little more understanding: I have a bit of experience in this area, having dealt with stuff like this as a teenager. I'm not going to go into it, I don't really feel the need, but what Galivar did to Navani in that prologue *did* make my senses goes "oh no oh no oh no oh nooooo". For me, this is an obvious sign of gaslighting/verbal/emotional abuse going on. Especially how Navani went on to express how he never did these things in front of anyone else. He was good in front of everyone but her. Ouch. BUT in others defense, these cues are only obvious to those of us who've experience them or have been affected by them through others. I don't think we should expect others to immediately jump to our conclusions just because they don't read into things the same way. We can't blame others for not having the same thoughts/reactions. If Galivar is truly being written this way, the truth will out and this debate will be over. So I think we should all wait until this book is out, and then we can condemn/rationalize as we see fit. That's just my two cents though!

  14. Why are they God, just because they are super powerful beings? If we met aliens with technology that could bend time and space and had unlimited power sources, would you consider them Gods? Some people would, but I wouldn't. They would just be...extremely advanced and powerful beings. Here's a good topic with a lot of discussion on it back then, that I think covers a lot of people's thoughts both for and against. (We should continue discussion here, of course, just putting this here as a reference)

  15. If I remember correctly, she said that she was open to the idea of there being of a higher power/god, but just didn't believe that the Almighty was a god to be worshiped. So I don't think that would be her viewpoint- I think that she isn't quite an Atheist, more questioning than anything.

  16. I think there needs to a pretty drastic delineation in people's understanding between other users supporting real life abusers in real situations hurting real victims and those same users arguing a fictional character who's teleporting little fairies back and forth from hell might be a person that we can discuss the rationales and motivations that formed them without serious ethical concerns. There's been plenty of people in the fandom who have (mock or otherwise) argued for the Lord Ruler, and yet I doubt any of those people are really down with genocidal dictatorships or stabbing others with pointy nails. If Gavilar has ever actually done something positive in his life, recognizing whatever that is will not revictimize Navani, because she's not real. The most that could really be said, I suppose, is that it somehow vaguely contributes to a greater culture of abuse, in which case my reply is that I didn't find much credence for the Video Games Cause Violence! moral panic either.

  17. I cannot even begin to tell you how long I have been reading Sanderson, and I've lurked here for far too long. I decided that I was kinda tired of trying to explain the plots to my friends, and to find a good spot for some crazy tinfoil hat theories. I'm not sure what's my favorite book, but Kaladin, Vin, and Dalinar are my favorite characters. One of my goals is to get a RAFO card from Brandon, and I thought I had him when I asked if you could Push/Pull shardblade (it was way back in 2016)... But I did not. When I took the Order quiz, I got Windrunner/Truthwatcher/Elsecaller in pretty much exact proportions. Which blows my mind because none of them share a surge at all. I eventually decided on the order of the Windrunners, because at the end of the day, I will protect. (Gravity is fun too). Though if it was this or Mistborn, I would definitely struggle to chose.

  19. Mostly, I agree with what Truthwatcher said. There shouldn't really be a "big deal" about it, though. I've never had a boyfriend, and it certainly doesn't look likely that I will in the near future, as the only guys who have ever liked me are either idiots or I only see them as a friend. Like Truth said, crushes just...happen. You want to be around them all the time, your day instantly becomes better when you see them, talk to them, or if they smile at you. The simplest things they do make you feel happy and nervous at the same time. The "point" as you asked of relationships, in my opinion, is to learn. Future relationships shouldn't be the first, you could make a mistake that could have much worse consequences in the real world than it would in high school. I had a bad experience with a guy, I won't elaborate because then I'd go into a full-blown rant, but I really liked him, he said he liked me, he was a player, nothing happened, then I realized he was an idiot when he ditched a super great girl to go to a party with his psychotic ex-girlfriend. Dating should be a way to get to know people, find out what you're looking for in a future spouse, and nothing more. If you go on one date with someone, that's all it is, don't make it a big deal unless you want to. So, yeah. The point of relationships in high school is to find out what you want in a partner.

  20. These two have no correlation in reality. Sure, sometimes Abusers are also terrible people outside of the abusive relationship, more frequently they're not. Abusers are the super friendly husband who comes at night and has too much to drink so he beats his family. They're the awesome bakesale mom who comes home and is emotionally abusive to her husband. They're that super fun friend who goes home to his boyfriend and controls everything in their life. They're the girl who is so jealous of every other girl in her man's life that he doesn't have any other female friends because of her. Abuse isn't that clean. It's not as simple as the big bad drug dealing gang banger that comes home and hits his girl. That's not reality, and that's the problem. Now, if we want to look for a magical explanation of his abuse sure, but I HIGHLY doubt there is one at this time. Let's look at some other examples of issues in this book for a baseline. Shallan has a dissociative identity disorder (WoB's say it's non-magical), Kaladin suffers from Major Depressive Disorder (somewhat magical, but majority is real depression), Tien was likely autistic (I haven't seen definitive proof from Brandon either way, please correct me if I'm wrong). Sure Gavilar could have had a magical reason for why he was abusive, but don't go looking for one in the shadows, if one shows itself then we can reassess. You're right, thank you. There are definitely some people who wouldn't recognize this as abuse. I would encourage them to learn more about abuse and the signs of it. But if they don't have the knowledge on the subject they should trust others who have done the research, or know from experience.

  21. If others haven't already guessed, allow me to call it here, or to rather say, I can imagine it now: The Fused harry and harass the Fourth Bridge as it travels first to Herdaz and then on to Urithiru. But there are too many Radiants and they give up. But somehow they find the paired fabrials in the Shattered plains and attack there, and mess everything up. The Fourth Bridge starts to fall . . . And then Bridge Four dives down, saves it, and carries it home on their shoulders!

  22. You've done your research His treatment of Jasnah (mentioned in this prologue & by Jasnah) & Dalinar (what Gavilar says of him, giving the impression he just used his own brother) were also pretty appalling

  23. Perhaps Dalinar has been using his Perpendicularity at will powers to learn from them in moments of Lucidity. This painstaking process could account for gaps in knowledge as there is only so much they can learn at a time and he can't constantly be doing this.

  25. Daily Report 50-10-765 Stormlight seems to be the key to unlocking the samples. This shouldn’t have been a surprise, stormlight is one of the rawest forms of investiture available. Chromatic Breaths seem to work as well but they are prohibitively rare and is limiting our progress with the sample. The limited understanding of them doesn’t help either. The samples are organized now, but the effects they are exhibiting are spreading to whatever we put near them. Samples continue to go missing but figuring out who exactly is stealing them has proven… disastrous. Police Report 50-10-765 In the middle of the day a break-in occurred in one of our offsite labs. Tara Night had been put in the post due to mob enforced disciplinary action. She fought valiantly and even killed one her assailants, but ultimately met an untimely end. Before the intruders could retrieve their comrade, aid had arrived. They were forced to flee. The body the Shard found was odd… it had numerous signs of being riddled with several diseases simultaneously. The corpse was of Ashyn descent but a clever application of make up and prosthetics had hidden the fact. It appears we have underestimated the infiltrators. Illwei (3): TJ Shade, Frozen Mint, Straw Ashbringer (2): Matrim’s Dice, Devotary Mist (4): Sart, Illwei, Araris Kasimir (1): Vapor, Kasimir Devotary of Spontaneity (1): Lahilt Lord_Silberfarben (1): Ashbringer StrikerEZ (1): The Young Pyromancer Mist was lynched! She was a Loyal Intern and had a background in History Her journal revealed she had somehow begun to manifest an innate form of soulcasting, at the dire cost of her body slowly transforming as well. 26. I don't think the traitor feeding Dalinar's info to the SoH is among the upper ranks. They're able to inform them about his plans, but obviously Shallan's offer of fabrial diagrams was outside of their reach. This means they're almost definitely not one of the scholars/ardents who works with Navani, so we can rule out that contingent of people. Taravangian is an option, but he's such a higher-up in the coalition that I'm pretty sure he could have provided the fabrial technology the SoH. Could be one of the Highprinces, though. Restares is suspiciously missing, but I think it would be an interesting twist if Ialai was Restares all along. (Cue astronaut meme?) One last thing I have on my mind is that Honorspren which hasn't bonded anyone. I saw somebody else here suggesting it's Phendorana trying to claim Kaladin because she's more "senior" than Syl. I like that idea, but there's another possibility on my mind: Somebody had to have experienced being stabbed by one of those spears the first time, right? As the number of Windrunners grows, the chances of one of them dying increases as well. I think it's possible that a Bridge 4 Windrunner died and left behind the unbonded spren Kaladin mentions, and that's one of the things weighing heavily on Kaladin. As for the theory that they're after Rock, I don't think that's the case. His beliefs might keep him from combat, but he obviously has no problem with surgebinding, so I'm more inclined to the idea that he belongs to another order. He would fit the Edgedancers (interaction with Rlain during Oathbringer POV) or Stonewards (can't think of someone more dependable) quite well.

  28. Hi Everyone, I learned about Brandon from the Wheel of Time. My best friend had me start reading it shortly before Towers of Midnight came out. I really enjoyed how A Memory of Light turned out so it only made sense to find other things by Brandon at that point. I read tWoK and was hooked. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. I really enjoy reading series (kinda have to if you get sucked into WOT and make it all the way through) and so I read Mistborn and discovered the Coppermind leading me here. I can still remember when I saw where the surges had been guessed/reasoned out and thought "these people are way ahead of anything I'm reading into this" and it made me re-read everything looking for clues. I've been lurking on here for years just figured I'd finally jump in on some of the conversations. I'm a book junkie, so I read lots and lots and constantly have a list of books that are coming out but I have to say I keep Brandon's homepage bookmarked and seeing the progress bar move is still something that makes me grin. My favorite series by other authors would be a tie between the Divine Cities and the Gentlemen Bastards (come on Scott Lynch!) although I have a ton of authors and series I really enjoy. I'd have to say my favorite Brandon character, though, is Wayne, cause I really enjoy his lines of reasoning (something along the lines of "it makes sense old people would live the longest seeing as how they have the most practice at not dying."). I would also put Hoid at a close second because of his ability to take apart anyone without really trying. My favorite book is still Warbreaker and I really enjoy how Brandon released all his notes in the writing process.

  29. I caved too, but at a different task: I decided to not do a full reread of the previous 3 books. I don't have the time (thankfully I've been very busy at my job, working at home through this whole pandemic - makes me a bit sad, but it's the right choice for me now), and I've read them all several times already. What I am doing is reading through: (done) All the chapter epigraphs (I copied them into a separate document and have some of them reorganized per their citations which is a very interesting exercise...) (done) All the Interludes (done) All the Prologues / versions of the night Gavilar was murdered (in-progress) All of Dalinar's visions But I am going to discipline myself to not be here on the Forums so much for the next few months, just in case anyone guesses something that turns out to be a spoiler. It's going to be even harder to not cave for the Shard, but I did it for Oathbringer so I know I can do it now. Happy reading!

  30. I can relate to that syndrome. I have a gut feeling that something very bad will happen by the end of Part 1, that will make Dalinar send Kaladin to surgeon job. This will allow Kaladin to replenish own mental resources and rest.

  33. I don't think anyone here is defending, dismissing or not recognizing the actions of abuse. Its more of a question of why and how. Why is Gavilar being abusive? and How did Gavilar get to this point? From what we can see here he's a conqueror who became power drunk and discovered a path to becoming a god (possibly?), he was a complete megalomaniac at the time of his death. But up to this point we saw Gavilar as the softer side to Dalinar's Black Thorn days, the reasonable one who restrained him and moved them away from war and killing and onto creating a kingdom with a stable society. Now we get this, its kind of a shock to the system so naturally we have questions, we wanna know why and how he got to this point and what signs did we potentially miss that pointed to this type of person. I think he may have been on good path or at least one of redemption for the war monger he had been, but then discovered something that sent him back to the edge and then over it. I think that something was a path to godhood but I also wonder if he was further being manipulated by odium or one of the unmade, hell it could have been more than just manipulation some of his mental capacity may have even been compromised (we have seen what effect the unmade can have on a person, take Aesudan for example). It's human nature to ask questions and want to understand the deeper meaning of things, exploring these nuances does not mean we are dismissing the act of abuse, the very act of trying to figure out the why and how is acknowledgment of its existence in the first place.

  34. It hit me like the whole Amber Heard audio hit me, so I'm fine with calling it abuse since it is. It's also how I talked about it to my brother when we were discussing the prologue. My only regret is that I can't upvote you more for this post.

  35. She lays out her reasoning at the beginning of WoR. Beings such as Honor and Odium might exist but they are fallible. She feels no personal inclination to worship powerful yet fallible beings nor does she except them as arbiters of ethical behavior. Jasnah believes that this is the purpose of a god and since she does not think any being can carry out that purpose she chooses not to worship. When talking to Taravangian in WoKs she claims that morality and choice exist outside of any god's preview. If one and one making two exist without a deity deciding then why not murder being wrong?

  36. That would help. He may only need to be around a lot of stormlight or surgebinding. He breaks out of his stupor in WoR when Shallan uses Illumination in his cell. Granted he screams and starts rambling about Ishar's knights, but still better than he was before she did that. Ash is the youngest Herald, the only one who my not have been born on Ashyn. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/372/#e11945 She has the least firsthand knowledge of what led to all this because she was a wittle baby during some key events. And she's crazy like all of them, she mentions to Taln she's lost track of time. All of the Heralds have a very hazy grasp on time. Kalak isn't sure whether he'd been tortured for hundreds of years or thousands of years I the Prelude. It's at least several thousand. I guess my point is these two won't give them as much as we'd hope. Either because they'll lie or they just don't remember well.

  37. I think Dalinar's knowledge of 9 kinds of Fused was more instinctive, connected to the Spiritual Realm and him being a Bondsmith. That might be why he's been unable to share how he knows this. We've seen Dalinar just know things in this manner before, opening a Perpendicularity, trapping an Unmade, knowing there would be ten important people.

  38. I'm a big fan of the time jump. I think that although it is evident that things have happened between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War, it hasn't changed the landscape of the story to the point that we will need to transition a lot to catch up. I'm looking forward to seeing where all of the characters are at, particularly Ash and Taln!

  39. Thanks El for running a great game. I enjoyed working my brain up in knots about I know that the Cultists know that we know who the Korathi are, etc. Twice the IKYK's, twice the fun! And I had a PM with Striker, but it was very short (I never made one with Mist) - I started a PM the cycle we lynched Hael - interestingly, Striker was actually the candidate I was second-most suspicious of at that moment, but something about the Drake lynch, and then Hael trying to lean on a Striker lynch, gave me a bad gut read, and made me decide to switch. Once we had a confirmed Cultist, it was much easier to draw connections to the others - with 4 players, you didn't really have the leeway to distance - Hael was tied to Elk, and Elk was tied to Illwei, and Silber was just the odd one out in the JP doc. In a slightly different world where the flip had gone the other way and Hael wasn't lynched, then the Cultists would have managed to win (and they nearly did anyway). And this game is just weird. Whenever I think about a specific faction, I go "Oh, yeah, this game is so biased against that faction, they have all these disadvantages"... Except I think that about every faction and they can't all be true. I think the Practitioners probably had the easiest job out of the three, but not by a whole lot - I actually mentioned to El before the game the possibility that a Cultist would just share the names of some Practitioners with a Korathi, making it impossible for the JP's to win. If I were a more chaotic/brave player, I might have claimed Cultist to a player and started giving fake reads or something to reduce the effectiveness of that technique.

  40. I am not sure comparing types of evil is ever productive. Sympathy is never wasted. It does not imply agreement. Gavilar does not have to be evil to act evilly. If the only people who acted wrongly were scaly monsters the world would be much simpler. However abuse is never justified and is always wrong. As an abuser Gavilar was both wrong and evil. The fact that he did other good things during his life does not change that. Given who is currently dealing with the whole "save the world" project I would say that his actions were clearly wrong. The fact that he did not realize this is not exactly helping his case. As a Lightweaver I disagree. The feelings that Gavilar engenders in a reader are just as real as anything else and should be recognized as such.

  47. But Gavilar kept it together. The Blackthorn would have kept them together with fear only. It would last one generation. Gavilar gave them something common to look up to. Is a Shard power? Or do you make yourself a servant to a gigantic inhuman metaphysic entity? It is not clear how Gavilar would see that. Or Dalinar for that matter.
