  1. Alright this is going to be a grand unifying theory(pun intended) so let us first lay out some things we know. We know that Adonalsium was a being of pure investiture that contained the power of all of the shards Adonalsium built Roshar with a specific purpose in mind. Odium feared what Dalinar was doing during his final confrontation during OB Odium stated that "WE KILLED YOU" in regards to what Dalinar was doing. Dalinar replied that "We are Unity!" in response to the asked question "What are you?" The everstorm is "a new thing, but old of design." Roshar is absolutely filled with investiture All three realms tend to be easier to access on Roshar Once we know that we can get down to theorizing. Figuring out what is happening. The bit that prompted me was Odium saying "WE KILLED YOU!" As far as we know he had no accomplices in his murder of honor. This has prompted a lot of theories but all of them involved either a fourth shard in the mix or Cultivation joining Odium against her partner. Neither of those really made much sense in the context of the stormlight archive(which is only supposed to be more local). The other half "We are Unity" indicates that Dalinar is claiming/invoking the power of Adonalsium but that did not make sense either as the being is shattered. What are his goals? This brings us to our next point. Adonalsium built Roshar with a specific purpose in mind. This begs the question. Why would a nigh all powerful being want to build anything? Let alone build something for a specific purpose? The only thing we actually know about Adonalsium is that he did like to build things. As such the only reasonable supposition I can make knowing Roshar has a purpose is that he built it to make building other things simpler. This assertion is supported by the fact that Roshar is a noticeably crowded system with three planets in the goldilocks zone and ten outside it. What this means Assuming my belief that Roshar was built to make building other things easier let is correct then the how and the why become somewhat deducible. As a being that exists in the spiritual realm Adonalsium would have a hard time accessing and understanding things from the cognitive and physical perspectives. To him concepts such as time, death, and pain were probably abstract. He existed in an state of ideals so pain was just a number to him. There is this amount of pain here. This would have lead to some difficulty if he wanted something specific to happen in the "real world." As such it would have been beneficial for him to have cognitive and physical agents to handle the small problems he would create every time he wanted to do something. On Roshar Adonalsium could direct the great spren directly and use the rhythms to have large number of singers build cities, alter the course of highstroms, and act as canaries looking for the fallout of his projects. A complex ecosystem supports a vast amount of investiture remaining free thus allowing easy communication between the SR headquarters and the PR workspace. If you want another gas giant but are worried about tidal strain just put it in see how distressed the singers get and if it is really bad they will tell you their problems(in song form!). Once they have explained their problem you can either create a spren to deal with it(this is where some of the great spren might come from) or give them instructions and the aid of an existing spren on how to deal with it using rhythm communications. If a singer or a group of them gets out of hand you can send a proto-unmade to hunt them down. If they need extra help housing a displaced population you can give them the strength to build a city(possibly an uncorrupted thrill acting a bit like coffee). This also explains why Adonalsium never bothered making Roshar viable long term. By the time the place no longer worked he would just be able to move on with another project. How the Everstorm The singers creating the everstorm is a baffling feet. A few thousand people with no special training manufacture a new storm that fundamentally transforms the way the entire world works and give sapience back to an entire race after two thousand years. This is a lot. The fact that they manage it indicates to me that Odium has co-opted some of Adonalsium 's old methods. He sent "instructions" for the storm through the rhythms possibly using one or more unmade as an intermediary. These instructions told the singers how to collect the free investiture of roshar in such a way that the everstorm could form. This may have been aimed specifically at the free odious investiture. Once the storm took form it gained a cognitive awareness that Odium shaped to allow him to control it better. Unity Among Odium's fears is being part of a greater whole. Despite repeated opportunities Odium has forgone taking up any additional power that would alter his intent. He can't stand to be changed into something better. When Dalinar opened his perpendicularity he connected with all of the investiture on Roshar. This investiture contained pieces from all sixteen shards including Odium himself. Odium was terrified that Dalinar understood him and embodied him at a higher level then he did himself. Given a winning singer population and enough time Dalinar could probably have made fundamental alterations to Roshar raising a third storm or quelling the first two. He could also have pulled Odium's investiture into the ecosystem making Odium himself serve the greater roshar. Odium would find this "weakening" of himself terrifying. Thanks for reading! Feedback is welcome!

  2. Cycle Two: A Pale Horse The party was still going on in parts of the house. Lord Tal had an excursion planned. Had the cook prepare food, too. I scraped the boat clean. Was going to be that some of you were gonna head out to sea. The house overlooks the Sea of Yomend. Lord Tal laughed at me when I asked. Said it wasn’t gonna fall in. I don’t go close to the cliff-edge, though. You never know what sort of accidents can happen there. Ain’t worth the view. There’s a safer path. And a rugged one. The steep track goes down among the cliffs. Slippery and like to kill a cove on a dark night. Even with a lantern. The other one’s more gentle. Lord Tal was gonna take some of you down that path. Going fishing, he said. ‘Course, Cook had the cloths and baskets for a picnic too. Lady Prissy was frowning. Don’t really know what about. Lady Prissy? She’s Lord Tal’s secretary. Does all the paper shuffling for him. Keeps the books, too. They were arguing, last night. Late in Lord Tal’s study. I seen them. Hard to mistake. It was their shadows, black on the window. Lady Prissy thinks Lord Tal is irresponsible. I heard them fight before. Works for him though, so she does what he says. She’s the one as ordered the house shut down. Says the one who iced Lord Tal is here. Can’t see why she’d be wrong, I guess. Lady Prissy is pretty smart. Hard to sneak in in the night, too. Them as did that would’ve to sneak back out. With no one the wiser. Ain’t right to me. Truth between us: I think Lady Prissy wants to catch the killer herself. Can’t say I don’t, neither. Lord Tal was good to me. Ain’t had a complaint, being his gardener. Lady Prissy sent someone out to go fetch the constables. Ain’t looking likely as if they’ll get here soon, though. Bilming ain’t Elendel, and even in Elendel, coppers take forever. If you ain’t got the connections. In Bilming? Coppers couldn’t find their arse blindfolded. Be lucky if they get here before most of us are iced. ‘Course, that’s the question, isn’t it? What’s stopping the killer from killing again? You said, “Talk about the party,” didn’t you. It was grand, I s’pose. Don’t got much of an eye for these things. Lord Tal comes from money, though. I know that much. Mam’s a Heron, see. Born rolling in the money, as they say. Shame about the carpet in the study. More’n I’d make in a couple years. Don’t miss much, even out here in the garden. I seen some of you. Laughing, over those fancy wine glasses. Sound carries out here. Don’t miss a face, even if I dunno your names. That gixie with the animals and the plants. Came out to look at the garden, mind. Told me all about the plants and the animals she’d seen. Didn’t seem to mind kneeling in the dirt. Quality, that. Spent enough time looking at those star-shaped purple flowers. The ones with the dark black leaves. Dunno why. Previous gardener, he said never to touch ‘em. So I wear gloves when I do. Didn’t seem to bother her none, though. There’s the one who’s colder than Lady Prissy on a bad day. Barely a glance at me when I came to get her things. I seen her sneering at some of you. Ain’t bitter, though. Probably noble. Don’t have nothing to do with the likes of me. The lady came by later, though. The one with the notebook and the endless questions. Don’t know how anyone can have so many questions inside. Was talking to Lord Tal, asking him about the garden. Lord Tal laughed and introduced me. “This is my gardener,” he said, “Karst. If you have any questions about the garden, or the plants, you’re in good hands.” Better than Lord Tal, maybe. But be damned if I know. Mostly I just have these here notes, see? She seemed interested. Couldn’t say if it was in Lord Tal, or the garden. Scribbling away in that book of hers. Wonder what about. Didn’t ask, though. Wasn’t my place to. Then there’s that uni man. Dunno him, but he came out to the gardens to talk to Lord Tal. Dunno what they said, either. Lord Tal pulled him away to the funny spiked-leaf bushes. Guess he didn’t want to be overheard. He seemed sad, too, afterwards. Rubbing at his face. Dunno why though. Guess everybody knows somebody, huh? What was the last thing Lord Tal did? Dunno. Think he said he was gonna talk to the uni man. Then there was that cove with the earring. Staring at a whole lot of nothing in the bushes. Don’t truck with Harmony myself—no offence to the god, it just ain’t my dive. I’m all for the Lord of the Mists, the Survivor. Don’t have no quarrel with Pathians, neither. But that cove. Dunno, something about him just puts my teeth on edge. Thing is, it’s an easy walk to the study from the bushes with the pink and yellow flowers. Could’ve been him. Then there’s that lawman. Rode up to the house on a pale horse, like death. Just know her type. Once a lawman, always a lawman. Those hard eyes. Watching you, every move you make. As if she knows every move you make. As if she’s thinking about how she’s gonna end you. If she has to. There’s a cold crowd here. Ain’t news. Enough of ‘em could’ve iced Lord Tal. Slit his throat as he lay there like a trussed pig. Helpless. Lord Tal, see, he’d retired into the study for a drink. That’s how I found him, at any rate. The light was gone, but the door was shut. Maybe he didn’t want to be disturbed. Needed the key to the shed though, so I knocked. Figured he’d tell me to go if I should. Door swung open, all on its own. Wasn’t locked or shut properly, nothing. Then I seen him there. On the ground. Bleeding out onto the carpet. Or maybe that was the wine. Didn’t see anything broken or what. Besides the wine glass, anyway. Like the carpet. Looks expensive. Shame about it all, now. Left it all exactly as I found it. After I called for help and got Lady Prissy. She always knows what to do, does Lady Prissy. Throat was slit. Helluva way to go, if you ask me. Didn’t look scared neither. Just surprised. Cold berk, whoever done it. ‘Course, that’s why you asking me, isn’t it? You and Lady Prissy. Hope you can find them as did it. Ain’t planning on sleep tonight. Lord Talbot Oswin has been killed! He was a Party Host! Please be reminded that unlike the previous cycle, all cycles will now be 48 hours long. As such, this cycle will end on 8th July, 2200hrs (GMT+8). Room PMs will be up in a bit, just let me reconfirm my listings. Good luck!

  3. [Death RP by Ventyl, go upvote them!] Brightlady Valas Etteax, Radiant of the Edgedancers, was being followed. She didn’t know by who, but she knew it was happening. She only had a little Stormlight on her person, hopefully it’d be enough to get away. “Valas, would you like me to look for our pursuer?” Lyndel asked, crawling in his vine form. His crystals and vines disappearing and reappearing as he moved alongside Valas. “No, I want you close in case I need you,” Valas responded looking around for any sign of the one following her. She prayed to the Almighty that the one in pursuit wasn’t a Skybreaker. Those men had no regard for the common citizen, they didn’t care about the circumstances, only the law. If it was a Skybreaker, she was dead anyway. “If it comes down to it, we won’t be able to get away with just Abrasion. I know you won’t like it, but there’ll be confrontation. As she neared the edge of a chasm she debated using up a little Stormlight to get across. Breaking her thoughts, Lyndel shouted, “Valas! I see them!” She immediately took in Stormlight and made herself Slick, just like Lift had taught all of the new Edgedancers that had come, except she didn’t need to take in Stormlight. Valas ran like she was on skates, as she got closer to the chasm she prepared to use Progression. When she arrived she used it to make a nearby vine Grow and cover the length of the chasm. She moved across it. When she reached the other plateau, she summoned Lyndel as the small rapier that she’d become accustomed too and begin summoning her Plate. As she turned to look across the chasm from where she came, Valas felt a spike of pain through her chest. The last thing she heard was Lyndels cries. The poor Spren, after all these years. They’d survived countless battles, healing the other Radiants, only to die on a simple mission to escort a group of refugees. Who knew there would be Diagrammist here? ————— Brightlord Lafay Etteax, he chided to himself, that’s your title. He moved across the plains. He used his Surges to shape the land beneath him, to an onlooker it would look like he was surfing on the stone. Which he guessed he was. He looked to his left and noticed that Ola was in the shape of the ship she’d used to work on in the Cognitive Realm, of course a lot smaller than it was in person. She two was riding his wave of stone. As he neared the place where he was supposed to pick up the group of refugees and carry them back in groups. He noticed something odd on the edge of a chasm. He decided to check it out. The closer he got he realized what the odd thing was. It was his wife. She had fallen back away from the chasm, her eyes burned out. “No, no, no,” Lafay cried, rushing to the corpse of Valas, “This can’t be happening!” But it was, and Lafay had been too late to do anything. He didn’t know how long he sat there, cradling the body of his wife. His beautiful wife, who’d been too good for this storming planet. She’d been the reason he’d gotten involved in the war, instead of just leaving Ola to die. When the sun started to rise, he used a little bit of Stormlight to dig a grave into the plateau. He’d come back one day and hopefully give her a real Scadrian burial. But for now, this was the best he could do, he wasn’t a Elsecaller or Lightweaver who could turn her body into the golden statue she deserved. He was just a Willshaper. After he finished, he made his way towards the Horneater peaks. He would return to Scadrial. Ventyl has died! He was a Refugee Edgedancer. Vote Count: Ventyl (6): Devotary of Spontaneity, Gears, Magestar, Orlok Tsubodai, The_Truthwatcher, TJ Shade Gears (4): Araris Valerian, Ashbringer, Frozen Mint, Matrim's Dice, Ventyl Matrim's Dice (2): Elbereth, The Young Pyromancer GM Notes: -The night will end on July 7th, at 1:00 PM EST. -Don't forget to get your actions in! -PMs are closed! -As some of you might have noticed, Fifth has not been active. 6. A few quick reminders! The Way of Kings leatherbound Kickstarter comes out tomorrow at 9am Mountain time, which is 8am Pacific and 11am Eastern. Brandon posted a big blog post on all the tiers if you're curious about it or its tiers. Additionally, Brandon tweeted today that there will be one of his newsletters coming out tomorrow, which will contain a preview of Rhythm of War. You can sign up for it here on his website. You can discuss the sample chapter (but not distribute it) in our Rhythm of War spoiler forum, or the #row_spoilers channel on Discord. Way of Kings Prime, the version of the book Brandon wrote in 2002, is coming out tomorrow as well with the Kickstarter. To discuss it, we've made a forum in our Unpublished Works area. Please discuss it there, and not in the usual Stormlight areas. On Discord, please use the #unpublished channel. Tidbit on The Lost Metal Brandon commented on Reddit another tidbit on The Lost Metal, the final Wax and Wayne book. We discussed that he plans to begin Lost Metal January 1st, but here Brandon says that the goal would be to have the book finished by next July with a release date to be the spring or summer of 2022. It also will probably lead with a flashback of Wayne, rather than Wax. Neat!

  8. In addition to @Elegy I can actually only add this WOB: So, apparently the measurements are x1.06. Hence, when Kaladin is around 6'8", then Shallan might be 5'9" on earth. Rock - who is described as almost 7 feet tall - is probably as tall as a small Koloss!

  9. Hey you guys! So I noticed that the Rhythm of War is coming out in a few months and I had an idea.... I'm usually super slow at re-reading books (because I know the plot, so it's not as exciting although I still enjoy it), but I wanted to re-read Stormlight books 1-3 before this next one comes out. I think we'd have about a month and a half to read each book (probably more like a month and a week)? I thought it would be extremely fun to find others that might want to do that with me! We could split up the chapters so we could get it done in time, encourage each other, and just generally discuss any interesting Shard-y things we find! Also, new friends! I'm a huge nerd and I also love organizing, so as long as you have the books, I think it's possible. Are you up for it?

  10. Good Day My name is Daniean and I live in Jamaica. I've read on the forum for years but I've never posted, I think it about time I stepped out of the shadows. Like many, I got introduced to Brandon Sanderson about ten years ago when I heard he was finishing The Wheel of Time. I took up Mistborn and read it and it was immediately my favorite book since The Great Hunt. I absolutely loved it. After that, I tried to get my hands on anything Sanderson wrote. When I heard he was planning an opus long series I was the happiest person on Jamrock. So far it has felt like Brandon interviewed me then wrote Stormlight to be the perfect book series for my taste. No interview does not cut it. the man must have read my mind because the stormlight Archive scratches itches that I didn't even know i have. Any way you can get a sent a sense of my taste by the books I've read. 1 The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit 2 by J.R.R. 11. There's a point in Warbreaker where Llarimar is explaining to Lightsong their religion and states that: This is exactly what happens to spren, where crossing to the physical realm leaves their mind fragmented and after some time (and finding the right person) they start healing. However, this does not happen to those who have the surge of Transformation, as we can clearly see with Shallan/Jasnah goin to the CR. The only difference I can find between the spren/Returned to the KR with transformation is that the later are alive (have a physical aspect in the physical realm) while moving through realms. And here is where a theory popped up in my head. Spren/Returned being just investiture at the point they cross to the Physical Realm, their mind gets scrambled. The why I have not yet figured out, but I think it happens cosmere-wise and not shard dependent (Why would Endowment do this in purpose? If she returns people so that they can do something about what they see via Futuresight before passing to the Beyond, why scramble their brains?) I don't think we have seen someone from Scadrial return to the PR after being "Preserved", I do have to concede that eventually at the correct time, Lightsong did remember his purpose and the spren eventually get their memories back. But I do think that the mind scrambling happens cosmere-wise and would not be localized to Roshar and Nalthis. I would like to know what everyone else thinks. Thanks!

  12. Hey everyone! I'm a new Sanderson fan but I already know I'm in it for life. I finished reading Oathbringer in May and finished Hero of Ages a few days ago. Onto Warbreaker or Elantris (I haven't decided which yet.) I was stoked to find out this site existed so I can nerd out with fellow Brando Sando obsessives. Looking forward to being part of the community!

  13. Lol, @Gears, you're twice the speed reader I am! My record for OB is about 7 hours total, broken up around work and graduate courses. Overall, I can do books 1-3 in 4 or 5 days. Your eyes must not just move fast, they must move at LUDICROUS SPEED!! [bonus points if you get that reference]. A 3 hour reading is somewhere between incredibly impressive and slightly frightening! @Illwei As a former teacher, I can confirm that many American teens and adults of all professions move their lips while reading. This is normal for lots of people and if someone does there is nothing to worry about. Other trends, however.... [remembers the writing abilities of the average 11th grader and mimes clawing out own eyes in horrible-grammar-induced-apoplexy].

  14. That is an AMAZING schedule. Yeah, you've got it 100% correct. I double checked! I think this will just be a re-reading of the main three books, BUT if those of you who are super-speed-readers wanna go for Edgedancer/Warbreaker than go straight ahead! You're free to discuss it here. Otherwise, it looks like we'll need that week, because the book comes out on the 17th of November. Thank you @Ixthos so much for this! So as it stands, our dates will be: July 13th-19th: Week 1 July 20th-26th: Week 2 July 27th-August 2nd: Week 3 August 3rd-9th: Week 4 August 10th-16th: Week 5 August 17th-23rd: Week 6 August 24th-30th: Week 7 August 31st-September 6th: Week 8 September 7th-13th: Week 9 September 14th-20th: Week 10 September 21st-27th: Week 11 September 28th-October 4th: Week 12 October 5th-11th: Week 13 October 12th-18th: Week 14 October 19th-25th: Week 15 October 26th-November 1st: Week 16 November 2nd-8th: Week 17 November 9th-15th: Week 18 November 17th: RHYTHM OF WAAARR! Anyone is allowed to join or leave at anytime. If you can't read all the chapters in one week, just make it up when you can (same goes for reading ahead, we're all gonna be different paces)! Yayyy! I'm so excited!

  15. If I'm following you correctly then the system is: Week 01: tWoK: Prelude to 15: The Decoys (treating Prelude and Prologue as one chapter due to Prelude's short length) Week 02: tWoK: 16. Cocoons to 31. Beneath the Skin Week 03: tWoK: 32. Side Carry to 50. Backbreaker Powder Week 04: tWoK: 51. Sas Nahn to 66. Codes Week 05: tWoK: 67. Words to Epilogue: Of Most Worth, and WoR: Prologue: To Question to 8. Knives in the Back - Soldiers in the Field Week 06: WoR: 9. Walking the Grave to 23. Assassins Week 07: WoR: 24. Tyn to 38. The Silent Storm Week 08: WoR: 39. Heterochromatic to 57. To Kill the Wind Week 09: WoR: 58. Never Again to 73. A Thousand Scurrying Creatures Week 10: WoR: 74. Striding the Storm to 89. The Four, and then one more for Epilogue: Art and Expectation Week 11: if we include Edgedancer then the total 20 chapters of Edgedancer so as not to divide reading into 19 and 1. Otherwise shift week 12 to here, 13 to 12, etc. we also might want to re-read Warbreaker as well, preferably before Words of Radiance but if we do re-read it we should definitely do so before Oathbringer Week 12: OB: Prologue: To Weep to 18. Double Vision Week 13: OB: 19. The Subtle Art of Diplomacy to 34. Resistance Week 14: OB: 35. First into the Sky to 53. Such a Twisted Cut Week 15: OB: 54. An Ancient Singer's Name to 69. Free Meal, No Strings Week 16: OB: 70. Highmarshal Azure to Interlude I-7: Envoy Week 17: OB: Interlude I-8: Mem to 102: Celebrant Week 18: OB: 103. Hypocrite to 118. The Weight of it All Week 19: OB: 119. Unity to Epilogue: Great Art So this pattern would you say? Of course if someone wants to check I have gotten this list correct I would appreciate that :-P Also if anyone can think of more appropriate break points, or days to stretch it a bit further, etc., or if Edgedancer and Warbreaker should or shouldn't be in the list.

  16. Ummm that's amazing. I'd love to have that talent! Maybe you could just join in on the discussion then? Then you won't have to be bored by our relative slow-pace (although this is going to be speed-reading at this point for me lol). So I just did the math, and this whole thing will be about 19 chapters a week (which some weeks will be lighter than others depending on chapter size). That includes interludes, because I counted them as chapters. Is that good with everyone? Starting on Monday, I'll post my thoughts and whatever stood out and maybe a few fun questions! Anybody else have any thoughts on things/discussions/challenges we could do weekly? I love hearing all the ideas!

  17. Hello everybody, based on a discord discussion about a week ago we'd like to adress the whole topic character advancement. As you might have noticed that part is completely missing in the index so far, which is mostly because we as a community haven't come up with a fair way that doesn't lead to hours of more work for the mods so far. Still we'd like to explain how our current system works. Let's say you play a Knight Radiant and want to speak your next oath. In that case you contact a mod, tell them what you plan to do and we'll approve it (or not). Basically what we're looking for is character development, that happened over some time, so please don't expect to speak an oath every single month. Our current idea is, that at the end of each Era, when you resubmit your character sheet for the next list of characters, you have the possibility to add some advancement to their sheet. We don't want to grant everybody a fixed number of points, as we would prefer to see characters grow and evolve based on what they did in rp. We can only ask you to keep it logical, and if neccessary will decline an advancement that feels out of place. We will try this out with the transition from Era 5 to Era 6 (whenever that happens) and see if the amount of work it creates is manageable for us or not. This also leads to something else: due to advancement your character will at one point end up over the cap limit. It's possible, but in that case we'd like to ask you to write your character accordingly. In the end, should it come to a confrontation make sure you give the other player a fair chance to win, or don't solve a plot single handedly. Another possibility to write a 'stronger than usual' character is by using the OP character sheet. As there haven't been any submissions in a while, maybe here a short explanation. When you fill out that sheet you'll notice, that there are additional fields, like what your character can add to the story. Again, please keep in mind, that we'd like for everybody to be able to contribute to a plot or a fight, so keep that in mind while creating an OP character. Once you are done with that sheet, you submit it in the character thread. This time, we mods won't decide wether you can play the character or not, but the community will. We'll create a vote and allow some time for people to vote or ask questions in the character discussion thread. If they approve, then you can start with your character, just as you would with every other one. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask them! In general we would like to hear some feedback and your thoughts on the topic, which is why I'll put that post into the Chat Thread as well. Voidus and Sorana

  18. I think it has something to do with quantum decoherence. It shows you other possible futures based on probability, so if there's a 0% chance that you, for example, spontaneously explode, then you won't see that happen. ...Which means if you DO see it that should be cause for concern.

  20. @R J I think I just might, thanks for the suggestion! @Lunamor I've got enough stormlight to dampen the potency Favorite book so far is Words of Radiance. It was nice to finally see all of my favorite characters in one location interacting with each other. @Mist Hmmmm (lies) I'd have to say Surgebinding though I love how intricate Allomancy and Feruchemy are in the Mistborn series. @AonEne Thank you!

  22. To each other, yes - in order to multiply the power of a given Surge It's been a while since I read WoR, do you remember in which chapter (or at least which part) was that described? Dalinar got the Investiture from the Stormfather, he explicitly mentions the Connection between them when he explains what he did to him. I think (although that's a hypothesis) that Singer-multiplied Adhesion was enough to transfer massive amounts of Investiture from Braize and that's what jump-started the Everstorm

  24. When you pull out your change and have an overwhelming desire to swallow the coins. When you forget that Aragorn's sword Anduril isn't some sort of Shardblade or Honorblade. When you find Allomantic Symbols in the margins of your notes and assignments. When you feel exposed when you notice the button on your jeans is metal. When you stumble into the gymnasium after your PE final gasping, "Pewter. I need pewter."

  25. That was "I am Unity" if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if that necessarily implies Adonalsium's plan or involvement, although I agree that's a valid option I definitely agree that Odium used Adonalsium's design here, but I believe it could be way simpler than that. Singers might have the ability of linking their power (nice nod to Wheel of Time), to the point of being as powerful as a Dawnshard. That would explain why Honor was so reluctant about them using the Surges. Linking the power provided by thousands of Voidspren could allow them to accumulate enough Connection (I assume that the Stormform provides some kind of access to Adhesion) to bring Investiture from Braize to Roshar, a trick somehow similar to how Dalinar summons Honor's Perpendicularity

  26. Been thinking about my favorite allomantic metal again... Started wondering if a skilled/near savant Oracle could start to trim down the number of future selves they see, down to like a top 5 or 3 or something of likeliest futures. That starts to get pretty close to Atium (without the mental boost), though, so i dunno. Also, a skilled Oracle could probably come up with some sort of subtle hand gesture that their past(but actually present) self could see, and use that to instantly be like "ah that's the best timeline of the bunch, let's follow that shadow's path" or "oh jeez that one didn't end well let's avoid that". Also of course the best feruchemy to pair with Electrum would be Zinc to replicate the other half of Atium.

There was a puddle of blood coating the floor and... was that Lord Talbot? The host, murdered? How awful! That would make a marvellous story. The host dies, the guests must find the killer before they are killed as well. Absolutely lovely. Rusts! She had stepped in the puddle of blood, completely ruining her shoes. She quickly scribbed down her idea before she forgot it and took off her shoes. Hopefully the cleaners would be able to salvage them.

  34. Thank you all who responded to my questions In light of that bit of the rules you quoted, you're probably right that RP doesn't have a big mechanical impact, after all. Woulda been cool but yeah probably not practical. Idk if those are all things that happen in the book but if so it sounds like an interesting read Yes, there is 18 players. 4 or 5 sounds like a reasonable guess. The rule of thumb is usually 20-25% I think? So both 4 (22.22%) or 5 (27.77%) would be plausible. I'm going to be pessimistic and assume it's 5 for now to avoid nasty surprises in the future, but you're probably right about 4 being more likely. Good questions. I'll take a stab at em: 1) I think most likely yes, but I already got PAFO'd on that. 2) Are there things that can do that? Huh. Yes I am excited to find out what they are. 3) Yeah thanks for reminding me of this. I remember this was one of the things I took note of when I was signing up. I'm gonna slightly village read you for bringing this up, because I think this is a fairly major concern for the village to be thinkin about. If the elims can ever get in a hammer, pretty sure we lose immediately. I'd really rather not risk that, even if the elims potentially have a harder time communicating between themselves in this game. So this is the part where I push everyone to vote (surprise surprise, the guy who puts inactivity filters in his games based on voting every day wants y'all vote ). Once the voting starts, vote early and often. Three important facts: Even if we pile more votes on a single candidate than there are eliminators left in the game, that doesn't necessarily make us safe. If some of the voters for the top lynch candidate are also elims, then their switching to the Secretary will also leave the leading non-Secretary candidate with fewer votes. Probably the best way to guard against being hammered is having multiple candidates for the lynch who each have a lot of votes (ideally 5+ at this stage in the game). I know this is probably unrealistic of me, but it would still be fantastic if we could manage those amounts of activity. Please do not take what I've said as a license to pile votes on a bandwagon without reasoning to back it up. Imo it's in a similar category as trying to prevent vote manips, where it's maybe a contributing factor in deciding to vote for somebody but it's not really a good enough reason on it's own, because the same reasoning could apply to any other player you wanted to vote for. "Of course, the Heron succession crisis was absolutely sensational," Zachary voiced enthusiastically. "Elendel was abuzz for weeks in speculation. Caused almost as great a stir as the incident with the Erikell disinheritance and the flamingos... But surely you've heard all about that already, that's old news. In any case, congratulations on your most precipitous ascendance! It may be so that the present company is lacking, but truth be told I had expected no different from an auxiliary house to greatness." Zachary watched the guest who was pushing her way through the crowd with a critical eye. Fashion was a bit out of date, but that was Bilming for you. If I see anyone who meets that description, I'll definitely let you know I mean, fair. Since it's a "partial-blackout" game and not a full blackout game, I'd personally be fairly surprised if something major like a whole separate faction were left out, but you never know. My perspective about what counts as "a lot of stuff that is going on" may be a bit skewed since I frequently gravitate towards the most complicated setups possible It doesn't maybe feel like there's a lot going on yet since we're just introducing characters and consulting rngesus to choose a room to search, but that'll probably change in a hurry. Also can I just say everyone's RP is great.

  35. Hey. So, mental illness sucks and shouldn’t exist, and in related news I will be around for the next hour and no longer because apparently breaking my sleep schedule and forgetting my meds results in Not Being Able To Do Anything syndrome. Who knew? So I’m here, though splitting my time between this and the MR and fixing all the threads so they’re not a complete mess (by which I deduce Fifth hasn’t been around yet?). I haven’t read through the pages since I’ve been gone; I’ll skim the last couple pages if possible but mostly I’m here to check in, see if there’s anything I should reply to / comment on, and say I hope to be around more tomorrow but can’t promise anything because promises are stressful and my brain thinks stress must be avoided at all costs. Looking at literally only this page, I’d be fine with a Matrim lynch (and much more so with that than a Ventyl lynch (which seems to still be happening?). Mostly because I think Ventyl is village, a little bit because I feel like (and I can’t back this up without reading the intervening pages) this might be turning into lynching someone for non-optimal play and I would very very would rather not do that. So Matrim I guess? EDIT: Oh, and my laptop charger is broken and I won’t get a replacement for another week, so I’m going to be on mobile from now on I guess. :))

  36. Been super swamped so will not be able to comment the way I would like to, but I figured I would jump on just long enough to add some context that I think is missing from this discussion. 1. Taravangian, the king himself has tried to stop these men on numerous occasions. He has spoken to the guards. Ordered them to catch these men. Unfortunately Taravangian (appearingly) does not have much power in his own city. The guards are bribed not to patrol. Whether it is from a weathy benefactor or not, remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, those men were never going to see justice legally. 2. The men surrounding Jasnah and Shallan had lethal intent. Shallan also confirmed they were no mere cut purses. The "prey" they hunted required the victims to be killed. They could not release affluent women unharmed especially when the men could be identified by the women. None of the men covered their faces. They knew if they were actually tried for their crimes, it would mean execution as per the law of the city. 3. Multiple killings have occurred there before. So these are career criminals 4. Jasnah did not kill those men to teach a lesson. Jasnah did it to help Taravangian who based on the knowledge she had on him at the time (a kindly peacemaker) she greatly respected. If anything she felt she was remiss to not use the powers of the soulcaster more to help people (her words). Shallan was ancillary. It would have taken place had Shallan existed or not. All of these points are quotable taken right from the book. Personally Jasnah does not have self defense because she went out and purposefully looked for those individuals with what amounts to a gun. However, in the circumstance she was in, given the world she is in, and given we do know what her motivations were (she said so herself), I think she was justified. But the earlier points I made were not to argue that. Please feel free to feel however you all wish. Just wanted to provide added context.

  37. Matrim was squired by Ventyl, and thus Matrim thought Ventyl was a villager as Ventyl would have squired an elim if they were a elim. Matrim did ignore the possibility of Ventyl being an elim trying to pocket them, but they turned out to be right. Or possibly Matrim is an elim who decided to claim village and back Ventyl so that if Ventyl was lynched and was revealed as village then Matrim would be percieved as village because they supported Ventyl, or if Matrim was lynched and was revealed as elim then we would end up wasting another day discussing whether to lynch Ventyl or not. Or not. Probably not.

  41. I hope you don't think I am fighting you or such, because that was not my intention. So personally I interpret this differently. For myself, a political favor involves a political benefit in some manner. A president pardoning someone, or helping another get elected (as I type this I realize it could be construed as in reference to the real world, and just want to clarify it is not). Viewing it in that lense, for myself, what Jasnah did was not a political favor. What political advantage would it give either of them? (as you yourself pointed out). Stopping those criminals won't make Vorinism not treat Taravangian poorly. It won't make the lighteyes listen to him. However, Jasnah, as she understands Taravangian at the time sees him as: “Besides,” Jasnah said, “I believe you might have made Taravangian laugh. He seems haunted by something lately.” “You don’t find him dull, then?” Shallan asked, curious. She herself didn’t think the king dull or a fool, but she’d thought someone as intelligent and learned as Jasnah might not have patience for a man like him. “Taravangian is a wonderful man,” Jasnah said, “and worth a hundred self-proclaimed experts on courtly ways. He reminds me of my uncle Dalinar. Earnest, sincere, concerned.” “The lighteyes here say he’s weak,” Shallan said. “Because he panders to so many other monarchs, because he fears war, because he doesn’t have a Shardblade.” Jasnah didn’t reply, though she looked disturbed. “Brightness?” Shallan prodded, walking to her own seat and arranging her charcoals. “In ancient days,” Jasnah said, “a man who brought peace to his kingdom was considered to be of great worth. Now that same man would be derided as a coward.” She shook her head. “It has been centuries coming, this change. It should terrify us. We could do with more men like Taravangian, and I shall require you to never call him dull again, not even in passing.” “Yes, Brightness,” Shallan said, bowing her head. Jasnah does not see Taravangian as a political ally. She sees him as good man, advocating for peace and truly loving his people. She sees someone she respects and cares for being troubled and hurt by his people being harmed and he being powerless to stop it. To Jasnah, Taravangian has not only done her a good turn, but has risked himself to do it with no expectation of recompense. The least she can do is try to alleviate some of the things causing him upset: those men are off the street. The people of this city are that much safer. The issue that Taravangian has been so worried about has been solved, and no more theatergoers will fall to those thugs. How many lives did I just save? I find it interesting that what classically is the Socratic Method (or at least how I see Jasnah teaches Shallan) in such a negative light. But I shall continue on that with your further comment below That certainly is an interesting way to interpret things. Though I would say the fact that Jasnah at no point prevented Shallan from running to the authorities, nor attempted to force her own view on Shallan speaks to otherwise. The Socratic Method (if you already know what it is, this is not meant to educate you but define it in order to show how it applies to this situation) is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking. and to draw out ideas and underlying principles. The point of such a method, is to cause the individual being taught to come to their own conclusions via their own reasoning, rather than just parroting back what they are told. Thereby if Shallan ends up having the same thoughts as Jasnah, it is because Shallan has using her own reasoning and logic, come to the same conclusions. Jasnah never tells Shallan what she is allowed to think. All Jasnah asks, is that Shallan comes to those thoughts through critical thinking and research. By the end of the exercise, Shallan thinks Jasnah is wrong. Jasnah thinks Shallan is wrong. But states at the end of the day, what matters is that Shallan went through the work, and really thought on it, without someone else telling her what to think. The true goal of a scholar and a scientist. The pursuit of knowledge. Finally, Jasnah nodded, then returned to her research. “You have nothing to say?” Shallan said. “I just accused you of murder.” “No,” Jasnah said, “murder is a legal definition. You said I killed unethically.” “You think I’m wrong, I assume?” “You are,” Jasnah said. “But I accept that you believe what you are saying and have put rational thought behind it. I have looked over your notes, and I believe you understand the various philosophies. In some cases, I think that you were quite insightful in your interpretation of them. The lesson was instructive.” She opened her book. “Then that’s it?” “Of course not,” Jasnah said. “We will study philosophy further in the future; for now, I’m satisfied that you have established a solid foundation in the topic.” “But I still decided you were wrong. I still think there’s an absolute Truth out there.” “Yes,” Jasnah said, “and it took you two weeks of struggling to come to that conclusion.” Jasnah looked up, meeting Shallan’s eyes. “It wasn’t easy, was it?” “No.” “And you still wonder, don’t you?” “Yes.” “That is enough.” Here is a quote where Jasnah goes in depth on everything I just said. What was it that Jasnah wanted her to do with the information? Once again, she felt a stab of guilt. Jasnah was taking great pains to instruct her in scholarship, and she was going to reward the woman by stealing her most valuable possession and leaving a broken replacement. It made Shallan feel sick. She had expected study beneath Jasnah to involve meaningless memorization and busywork, accompanied by chastisement for not being smart enough. That was how her tutors had approached her instruction. Jasnah was different. She gave Shallan a topic and the freedom to pursue it as she wished. Jasnah offered encouragement and speculation, but nearly all of their conversations turned to topics like the true nature of scholarship, the purpose of studying, the beauty of knowledge and its application. Jasnah Kholin truly loved learning, and she wanted others to as well. Behind the stern gaze, intense eyes, and rarely smiling lips, Jasnah Kholin truly believed in what she was doing. One point of order here, is though yes Jasnah was the architect of the scenario by choosing to walk down that street, that at the same time does not mean she created that situation. The murderers at no time were under any compulsion from Jasnah to: 1. follow her 2. bring lethal weapons 3. surround her 4. attack her All those actions were entirely their own. Now I already explained why I believe she went to the ally. To stop people from being killed, and to cause Taravangian to no longer be pained at his people being hurt and being unable to stop it. But to continue with your line of reasoning, she could not have pressured the city guard to reform. It is not her city. she would need to declare that the Alethi nation are moving to take over the city in order to take such immediate form of reform. She could not just come in and tell the city guard it has to reform. The captain is connected to a powerful lighteyes. So powerful the King himself cannot do anything, so why should we believe a foreign dignitary could? Jasnah could advocate for change and reform legally, and through the proper channels, but that would take months if not years. During which more people would die, and she would be unable to pursue her research in trying to stop the end of the world. True she could soulcast food and water, but Kharbranth is not an impoverished nation. It uses the funds it makes from the Palananeum to fund its free health care and presumably other social works. That still would not change that the captain of the guard is protected, and that that street is not being patrolled and that people are being killed that walk it. So to me, none of that would be more effective given the circumstances than what Jasnah did. To me it couldn't be to test the soulcaster, because Shallan has observed Jasnah doing so on multiple occasions. She soulcast the boulder, she soulcast wine to a paperweight, she soulcast words onto paper, she soulcast paper to fire when she was done with it. Jasnah has already extensively practiced with her soulcasting and has shown such a level of precision that it surprised Shallan ( writing on the paper via soulcasting). As to testing Shallan's loyalty? As mentioned in a prior post, even a 1% chance is still a chance, so I readily admit Jasnah could be doing this. Jasnah could be the ultimate big bad evil at the end of the stormlight, and everything we have ever heard and read from Jasnah was all part of a master plot to mislead us all along till the great reveal. Totally possible. Just for myself, it is not plausible. We (albeit rare) do get Jasnah's PoVs. We see and here how she genuinely cares for Shallan. How Jasnah genuinely admonishes herself for seemingly failing with her teaching of Shallan (during Oathbringer as Shallan regresses). Her concern for Shallan, and genuinely wanting to try and be a better teacher to help Shallan. All from her own mind. Now I suppose Jasnah is making up these thoughts in preparation for some entity that can read minds, but personally I find that far fetched, So for myself, I do not think the entire occurrence was done to manipulate Shallan into doing what Jasnah wants. That is assuming she planned for that moment to occur at that moment and set up Shallan all along. Which as I said above certainly is possible, but for myself, based on everything else we are privileged to know, I believe it to be improbable and implausible. Jasnah is dressed beautifully, because we know that is a character trait of hers. Always presenting herself put together and in control. It was how she was trained and raised. She teaches this to Shallan on the ship when they leave Kharbranth, and Shallan having learned that lesson, uses it to save her own life after the ship wreck, and save the caravaners lives later on. Yep, I would agree those quotes portray a sense of history and a degree of Post Traumatic Stress disorder. Jasnah has been hurt in the past. However..... I believe it is a stretch given all the other information we have to say that is the sole reason she has done so, and she arranged the entire scenario to play out exactly as it did. Despite Jasnah's powers she lacks one crucial one: mind control. At no point did she coerce or force those individual to again: 1. follow her 2. bring lethal weapons 3. surround her 4. attack her But if that is the case, how did she rewrite it by having those men follow her, bring lethal weapons, surround her, and attack her? Presenting this as you have removes the agency of the murderers. They are not robots that she programmed to play out a role so she can come across sympathetic. This was not a stage play to rewrite how the story plays out where she gets the desirable result. Those men still had to act. They still had to choose. Jasnah traveling to that alley could have just as easily passed through with nothing happening at all. But those men chose to watch that alley. Shallan confirmed it was not the men from the bar earlier. So these individuals staked out the area, and were prepared with weapons. Their intentions were clear. The only variable in this case is who walked down that alley. Had Jasnah not, someone else would have, and they would have died. In some countries on Earth as well as some countries on Roshar, yes it is. There is the "battered wife" defense, which states that even if the individual is not in a clear and current present threat and kills their abuser, given the physical and psychological abuse the individual has ungone, a court will rule in favor of the individual. In Alethkar, an individual that has been wronged by another (Tanalan's son), can challenge the injuring party to a duel as recompense. And duels to the death are very much on the table. But finally, as you are going for the moral angle, this is not violence as vengeance for the abuse. These are not the same individuals that abused her. She is not getting vengeance against her abusers. She is however preventing the abuse from occurring to other individuals. As per WoB, Taravangian knew that Jasnah was a radiant already. If his intention was to recruit her, he would be at the invitation/overture stage, not the investigation stage. Happy to read it and glad you are enjoying the discussion. Not intending to end the discussion here, but I would highly recommend you read my older thread "Jasnah More than Meets the Eye". That thread delves deeper into Jasnah's character, motivations, and actions. I recommend the thread because I made the point of getting every quote that mentions Jasnah across all three books (WoK, WoR, O) and included those quotes in the post. The intent was that if people disagree, all the quotes are available and readily apparent to reference and discuss, instead of going on memory and colored personal recollection. The quotes can be objectively read by both parties, and then from a shared source provide different interpretations. I hope you do consider reading it, and I wish you well. https://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/84071-jasnah-more-than-meets-the-eye/#comment-830297
