  1. I’ve been rereading The Way of Kings and it stood out to me how Hesina in Kaladin’s flashbacks seems very scholarly, and she also seems to be interested in and to know a lot about spren, and now I can’t stop thinking that she is actually Hessi, the author of Hessi’s Mythica! We know that Hesina’s past is shrouded in mystery but that she comes from a more high ranking family. As such, it makes sense to me that she would have been highly educated in the Alethi feminine arts and pursued scholarship. And there is of course the obvious connection with the name Hessi and Hesina being very similar. It is said that she and Lirin met during Lirin’s travels, and we know that Lirin was training to be a surgeon in Kharbranth so my guess is that this is where they met. I believe that Hesina was in Kharbranth at that time studying the Unmade - 1) because the Palaneum would be the best place to research such a topic, and 2) because perhaps she figured out that Moelach was there and was studying the Death Rattles (which would have brought her into contact with Lirin if she was in the hospital to observe the Death Rattles herself). Hessi’s Mythica appears to be very certain about and familiar with the Death Rattles: Throughout Kaladin’s flashbacks we get a sense of Hesina’s intellectual nature. We know that she can read and write unlike other women in Hearthstone. Then there is the way she offhandedly corrects Kaladin’s use of words, and her use of wit and logic, for example: When Kaladin is upset about the townspeople gossiping about his father, Hesina tells him: The way she explains things to Kaladin in such a wise and level way reminds me of Jasnah, or rather it reminds me of a scholar. However this quote I think is even more significant. We know that Hessi’s Mythica was poorly received due its controversial arguments about the Unmade. So when Hesina says that people are “frightened of knowledge” and that things they don’t understand must be dark and mysterious, I think she is drawing on her own experience here too. Perhaps what stands out to me most of all is that the focus of one of the few interactions we see between Hesina and Kaladin is her knowledge of spren. It does not seem to be a superstitious kind of knowledge, nor does it seem to be common knowledge. To me it comes across as a scholarly knowledge, and something Hesina is very confident about. If we turn to Hessi’s Mythica, Hessi too seems to have a deep knowledge of spren. Mythica makes a point of identifying the Unmade as types of spren. The fact that Hessi makes reference to Jasnah shows that Hessi was writing in this current period, so Hesina is around the right age that Hessi would likely be. But it also means that in order for Hesina to actually be Hessi, she would have had to have published it while living in Hearthstone, not 19 years ago in Kharbranth when Jasnah would have been only about 15 years old. This isn't too big of an issue for me though. Hesina could have amassed her research and evidence and then finished writing it later on in Hearthstone, perhaps continuing her research in other ways that Kaladin wouldn't have been aware of as a child. These are my main thoughts, although I admit it is a bit of a crackpot theory!

  2. So I took some notes during the Q&A. I ended up paraphrasing a lot due to the speed of the questions, and I DEFINITELY missed some stuff. Feel free to enjoy these or fine-tune them for other articles or speculation. I'll put the Dark One spoilers in the spoiler section (27-38) I'm currently editing this post, so please bear with me! 1. Television show will still be an adaptation of the graphic novel, if Brandon gets his way. 2. Pattern’s origins are in Dark One (when it was written as a YA sort of Harry Potter book). 3. Graphic novel takes outlines from the TV show and putting in graphic novel form. The TV started to drift from the original property. Still in talks about how much it will look like the graphic novel. Sanderson is not sure how much it’ll look like the graphic novel. There’s a chance the property will be renamed and worked into something else. 4. Outline has more with Lin; graphic novel more focused on Mirandus. 5. If there is a novel, that would be the prequel. “Epic fantasy sort of novel form.” 6. Novel Outline vs Comic Outline Comic Outline: Dialogue Heavy Focused on a large number of characters . Quick moving plots . Episodes vs Parts Serialized 7. Sanderson’s five soul stamps: Recast self as a visual artist Recast as a computer programmer Very different version of self “to see what I could have been” 8. Softer magic system vs we don’t have the rules yet. We don’t have the rules, but it’s softer than Cosmere. Paul’s powers are scary to HIM and aren’t wanted. Sanderson leaned in the horror of this as opposed to the Classic Brandon System, and the story started to work better. 9. Three Seasons outlined! So expect two more graphic novels. 10. Is there a significant difference between time passing in Mirandus and Earth? Sanderson has given leeway, so unknown for now. How it works in the outline – it wouldn’t be required. When the Narrative needs a Dark One and a Destined One, one is provided. Isaac says no. Check the climax of the first volume. 11. There’s a reason Mirandus speaks English 12. There are other incantations like the Mirandus & Earth travel one. 13. Too terrible circumstances for a character? Yes, but no examples given. 14. Isaac did the map stuff. I sorta zoned out on this part. 15. Emily Sanderson did one of the maps for A Memory of Light. Mellior (sp.) Battle map? 16. White Sand Omnibus Isaac is working on this when he’s working around Rhythm of War and the Kickstarter. Adding 38 new pages of artwork at the beginning. 17. Chicken Scouts The Chromatic Chicken Scouts. Cosmere-wide organization and get Chicken Scout badges by going to Roshar. “Brave Like Chickens.” 18. Isaac LIKES the ALTA comics! He has a soft spot for the Hellboy comics. Others include Nameless City, Amulet, Five Worlds Sanderson LOVES Watchmen. Other favorites: Dr. McNinja, old school TMNT, Bone, Amulet (both he and his kids) 19. No Graphic Audio for Dark One at the moment. Separate audio adaptation, but it’d be different from the graphic novel. It’d be like a radio drama. 20. ASMR jokes abound. Isaac then noted that when Sanderson signs things, it sounds sort of like the guitar riff in Pacific Rim. 21. There will probably be a livestream on Tuesday to talk about the book. 22. Leatherbound is the furthest along for the Kickstarter. 23. Isaac’s writing time has been taken up by most other things. Worldbuilding for Darkside (Taldain). Thinking about calling it The Arcanist. Prologue to White Sand. Probably for the Omnibus. Monsters Don’t Wear Underpants Board/Lift-the-flap book. He will read it on a stream sometime. We’ll hear more about it in the next few months. 24. Cosmere storybook is an idea for the future. Kickstarter and Stormlight have sucked the air out of other projects. 25. Isaac is already working on The Alloy of Law leatherbound. 26. RoW cover It’s coming along. The color sketch has been seen. Tor will reveal it when they get it. Sanderson won’t reveal it. DARK ONE SPOILERS TIME 39. Is it possible for a Kandra to bond a spren? Rafo. Yes good question. 40. Has Odium interacted other than any shards in a meaningful way post-Ascension? RAFO 41. Unkalaki jobs are decided by birth order. Is this cultural or for other spiritual reasons? No Rocks’s circumstances are not related to that. Horneater, name of novella between books 4 & 5 42. Showing emotional or non-physical Allomancy onscreen Blue as a signifier that Allomancy is being used. Faint blue lines and flashing items. Blue veins across arms for Pewterarms Eyes flashing blue when using emotional alomancy Non-diegetic cue, and it’s a little hard. Maybe it’ll have an extra weakness and BE diegetic. 43. How did the Knights Radiant treat their transgender members? In the past the KR were WAY more progressive than currently. They would treat them as the gender the Radiant sees them self as. 44. What is the strangest place you’ve pulled inspiration from? Chicken Scouts. Pat Rothfuss’ beard magic system for charity. 45. If you could chose three aspects to have with you, what would their specialties be? Languages, a really good continuity editor (to help Karen), and a psychologist Isaac would go with fashion consultant. 46. What form is a Listener at birth? Technically Dullform but they viewed it as Childform because it’s vibrant and alive in a way Dullform isn’t. It dulls as they age. Maturity is at seven or eight – not sure about continuity. Venli is 14 in Listener years. (10 for Listener is about 16 for humans) 47. Inspiration for the Narrative It’s a balance between the magic system and a modernist take on how narrative shapes who people are. The Pattern is a major inspiration. “Stranger Than Fiction” is an inspiration. 48. Sanderson most likely WON’T write Dark One’s novelization. Due to time allocation. 49. Could a modern human and Listener have fertile children? RAFO. 50. Sanderon is an Elsecaller/Bondsmith mix. 51. The Most Powerful Sword created idea. 780 powers Most of them are useless. Sanderson wants to write this someday. Top Quotes: “Not dropping the framerates like he used to.” “I’m one of the bestselling authors in the world! I can buy a gaming PC!”

  3. It came down to one vote, but the winner is: @Lunamor as Jasnah! Roshar wins this tournament 4 to 2. Scadrial fought well, but the Roshar team, Jasnah ( @FatherTiempo and @Lunamor), Teft ( @I think I am here.), Chiri-Chiri ( @John203), and Azure ( @Sorana) won in the end. I'm going to open up applications for the next tournament. We can take up to 16 people. Feel free to be whatever cosmere character you want, no teams this time around. Go ahead and mention anyone you would like to invite! Tournament 1 Applicants (with Ghanderflaffle as overlord for the whole thing ):

  5. I don't think I would currently be able to GM a game, but that didn't stop me and a couple of friends who are also Sanderson fans from working on one. Feedback and thoughts would be appreciated; maybe in the future this game would be run. Overview This game, tentatively titled Collision of Metals, would run as a Long Game, with a total of 31 players. A cycle, as used later in this game description, refers to both a day and night. Each one of these (day or night) is referred to as a period. Periods would each last 24 hours. This game is set in Era 2 Scadrial in a town on the outskirts of Northern Scadrian influence. Alignments Metalborn Abilities All metalborn abilities may be combined with either Basin or Set alignments. See below for potential twinborn. Special Roles Mistings - Mistings can burn their metal once a cycle. Mistings may also be Ferrings or Spiked, and may be Set aligned. There will be 6 mistings in the game. Ferrings - Ferrings may store their attribute once each cycle. This storing lasts for a period. At a later time, the Ferring may tap as many charges of that attribute as they have stored for one period. Ferrings may also be Mistings or Spiked, and may be Set aligned. There will be 6 Ferrings in the game. Spiked - Spiked have an ability which can be used once a cycle. Some spikes steal Allomantic or Feruchemical abilities. The ability is determined randomly at the start of the game. Feruchemical abilities have the additional constraint that they can only be tapped one charge at a time. Special Rules for Compounders: Compounding is enabled if a person is assigned the same metal in multiple systems. Compounding for Misting/Ferrings: May exchange one use of an Allomantic ability to double the charges tapped during that cycle. Compounding for Mistings/Spiked: May double Allomantic strength (see Nicrosil) at cost of one use of Hemalurgic ability. Compounding for Ferrings/Spiked: May perform Hemalurgic ability twice in a cycle, at cost of all stored charges in that metal. If a person has the same metal in all three abilities, they may only compound in one way per cycle. Cosmetic Roles: Worldhopper: Returns random false positive on any seeking. Basin aligned. Dark Alley Baker: Can give out a cookie to a target player. Basin aligned. Alternate win condition: Give a cookie to all surviving persons by the end of the game. Role Assignment: Roles will be assigned as follows: All players will be assigned a number, 1-31. By RNG, Koloss, Kandra, Southern Scadrian, Mistborn, Keeper, and Inquisitor are randomly assigned to a different number 1-36. If assigned to 32-36, these roles are not in the game. By RNG, Set faction is assigned to 5 different numbers 1-31. If assigned to a slot filled by another faction, assignment is re-rolled. By RNG, 6 Mistings are assigned to numbers 1-31, with all special roles and non-Set factions filtered out. Metals are then randomly assigned without duplicates. By RNG, 6 Ferrings are assigned to numbers 1-31, with all special roles and non-Set factions filtered out. Mistings are given one-half chance of being selected as a ferring. Metals are then randomly assigned without duplicates. By RNG, 6 Spikes are assigned to numbers 1-31, with all special roles and non-Set factions filtered out. Mistings and Ferrings are given one-half chance of being selected as a spiked, while players who are both misting and ferring are given a one-fourth chance. Metals are then randomly assigned without duplicates. Worldhopper and Dark Alley Baker are randomly assigned between all players without any other role or alignment. Summary of Role Spread based on 31 trials: Average Number of Special Roles in play: 5.17 Average Number of Alignments: 4 Average Vanilla Percentage: 22.37% Average Twinborn Percentage: 8.29% Average Additional Abilities of Set members: 0.83 ea Average Compounders Percentage: 0.21% Average Tripleborn (one ability in each system): 0.31%

  7. Today I'd like to thank @Argent. With the possible exception of Chaos (and only possible exception) there's probably noone in the fandom more widely known. And rightly so. Argent has the most WoBs in the community. He is a staff member and a feature of most shardcasts. He's one of the longest-time fans in the fandom. He's written up some of the best theories I've seen. There are few people who know more about the Cosmere, and more WoBs, than Argent. And he has put an amazing amount of time and effort into things like Arcanum, completely dwarfing my transcribing efforts. But mostly, he's just a larger than life personality, making people laugh, looking out for people who need it, being wilfully ridiculous. There are very few people without whom this fandom would just not be the same, but you're one of them Argent. So thank you for your contributions to the canon Argent, but even more so for your contributions to the community. We all need a good laugh nowadays, thanks for providing most of them!

  9. In Reading Excuses News: After three weeks, I think I'm caught up on everyone's chapters, except for @shatteredsmooth's short story, which I'm halfway through. Whew! If I missed you, let me know. Mishaps Updates: My AC is still out and my sister purchased herself an SUV to replace her totaled car. In Happy News: On Monday, I adopted a kitty I have been looking at for a long time. I didn't want to say anything until I finalized her name, but meet Juniper (June, Junie, or June-bug for short): She's a three year old shelter cat, who is the darkest shade of brown but passes for black in all but the brightest of lighting. Has been in the shelter since February, overlooked because of her coloring. Junie is a complete lovebug who is currently laying against my leg as I type this. She's spent the last couple days of critiquing passed out next to me as I sit on the couch. Juniper has scared me to death by hiding inside the couch (I thought I somehow lost her in less than a week of owning her) and likes to lick me until my hand is drenched and raw when she wants to reward me for petting her. I've wanted a cat since I moved away for college, and I'm so happy I chose her. She's like the perfect mixture of all of my favorite cats growing up. I can't wait to see how she settles in. Thanks for listening

  11. This is such an admirable goal! I popped the contrast in the original image to make the darker scripts easier to see, and also used Photoshop to Unsharpen Mask the details in the floor and the dark walls, the original image is far better for the glowing script, but this one draws out some of those elusive details. Very excited to see what information comes out of this!

  12. According to one of the creators of the Call to Adventure game, in the Taravangian art, the women's script is taken from known snippets of the Diagram, but there might be a secret joke in them! So, Sharders, translators unite, and find this joke (unless the joke is on us, of course). Here is the comment: And here is the art by Ari Ibarra

  13. The Dark One graphic novel by Vault Comics came out on ebook on the 26th. This story is not a cosmere story, so there hasn't been too much hype in the fandom on this one. Perhaps you're waiting for the hardcover (which comes out in August). Maybe you've been burned by the White Sand graphic novels, which could never reach their full potential because the story wasn’t written for a visual format to begin with. Even then, I wouldn't say a cosmere fan has to read White Sand. It's mediocre at best. So, on that level, I can see anyone being apprehensive about another graphic novel. Let's cut to the chase: is Dark One worth getting? Yes. I wholeheartedly recommend it, and I'm almost surprised to say so! I always have a personal issue getting into new stories, even if it's from an author I love. There's just a big inertia for me against reading new stuff. You have to get invested in new characters and a new setting. It's easy for me to put a book down. I'm not sure I would have picked up Dark One rapidly unless it was for this site, if I'm being honest. Maybe you have the same problem on getting into something new, or maybe you're worried about another Brandon graphic novel that isn't great. But everyone: Dark One is definitely worth your money. The art is excellent and the story has interesting twists and turns with the hallmarks you'd expect from Brandon, like clever worldbuilding and plot. It's a quick read, even though it's 200 pages long, and now that I'm done, I'm very invested in this universe and I can't wait to see what's next. Dark One is tailor-made for the graphic novel medium, unlike White Sand which started as a prose novel, and you can see how much of a difference it makes. Characters are introduced briskly with their motivations established immediately, so you're never confused as to why anyone is doing something. The art has a lot of color and diversity, communicating in a panel or two far more than pages of dialogue or thoughts in prose could. There is worldbuilding in the art, if you're paying attention. It's put together in a wonderful, clever way that I think really shows what graphic novels can do. The world has some standard fantasy tropes, a Dark One rising and a Destined One fated to meet them, but there's this undercurrent of the Narrative which drives the machinations. Some characters chaff at the Narrative and its designs, and some work against it, even though its said to be futile. It's pretty cool, and it harkens back to Brandon playing with those ideas of prophecy and the foretold hero back in Mistborn Era 1, which I always thought was fun and there are so many ways those fantasy tropes can be used. You'd be surprised at how much depth in the worldbuilding there is, with single lines holding a lot of implications for the past and the future. If you didn't know, Dark One is a portal fantasy story, where our main character, Paul, comes from Earth and he's transported to a fantastical world (Mirandus), where he becomes the prophesied Dark One. This isn't a premise that gets me too excited on paper, but in application it is executed wonderfully well here. Both Earth and Mirandus matter, and their connections are part of the intrigue. Really, all of the story just feels smooth in a way that I didn't expect. The plot moves exceptionally quickly. I think part of this is that it is a graphic novel, where we don't need to spend time on establishing shots because we can simply do a two-page spread on a new locale and call it good. I love tightly plotted stories, so this worked great for me. The ending is quite a Sanderson avalanche, and it might feel too quick to some, but I enjoyed it a lot. There are two twists in particular that I found extremely clever and I absolutely loved it. I'm a guy who loves my sweet endings, and I am a very happy camper with Dark One. Now, you need to know that this is the first book in a series of graphic novels (I believe three of them). This graphic novel does have a satisfying conclusion, but I also need the next things in the series immediately. I wouldn't say this is a "standalone" per se. Still, I think you'll be satisfied with this first one, but I sure hope we can get more of these quickly. I do not want to have to wait twelve months for each installment. That's about it. It's tough for me to get into new stories, but Dark One hooked me very effectively and I am now super invested in this universe. When Dark One was announced, it was said to be a multimedia project with a graphic novel, TV show, podcast, and novels. We already got hints of audio originals for Dark One, and I couldn't be happier. More please! One last thing: if you're trying to get friends or family into Brandon books, but the long novels are a harder sell, this might be a great place for them to start. Thoughts from Others at 17th Shard: Argent I finally feel like I understand the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel. [Dark One definitely felt like a novel to me, key scenes were given room to breathe, and the characters and the world alike had depth to them. Probably my favorite thing about the entire graphic novel is how real most of the characters feel - like real people, with real motivations, and no easy “good” or “evil” label being applicable to them. But the art is also really neat, and the visual language is strong and consistent, and… I guess the rest is spoilers. But I would absolutely recommend this! FelCandy Dark One was a highly anticipated graphic novel for me because I saw the potential for a visual accompaniment to Brandon Sanderson's writing. Because the story was written for the medium, I feel like the worldbuilding and character development was enhanced by the artwork rather than just illustrated. The artists' use of color and dramatic framing really immersed me into the world of Mirandus and the minds of the characters. The story is truly epic in scale, and even though it is in a less wordy format, fans of Sanderson's prose will not find the story lacking in lore and depth. Last weekend we got so excited about Dark One that we recorded two Shardcasts on it. The more we discussed, the more we realized how much depth was there. Our first one will be out Friday! You can discuss Dark One on our forum or our Discord server!

  15. Intro The Heralds, as we all know, were once normal men & women who were offered the chance to become something greater by Honor. They were granted the Honorblades, allowing them each the use of two Surges, along with other abilities. Upon death, the Heralds are returned to Braize to endure torture until one of their number breaks, which initiates another Desolation. We know that during the first few Desolations, many hundreds or thousands of years would have passed between the last time the Heralds returned to Roshar. Often, the Heralds would have to progress society rapidly in order to get them prepared for the coming war. This alone would have most likely been enough to convince many of the Herald's divine nature, however I suspect others would need a more direct demonstration. The Heralds have two distinct advantages when it comes to feats of unnatural power: First, the Heralds were directly powered by Honor. This means that they did not need to rely on stormlight stored in gems, and also implies that they would be able to use a greater amount of stormlight at once than a regular Radiant. Second, the Heralds occasionally swapped Honorblades. Additionally, it is possible to wield more than one Honorblade at once. My proposition is that this mixing of Surges greatly influenced the deification of the Heralds, due to the miraculous feats they could achieve, beyond that of a normal Surgebinder or even a Knight Radiant. Allow me to present some examples. The Surge of Transportation Jasnah, an Elsecaller, uses her Surge of Transportation to Soulcast from a distance, without physically touching the object she is changing. I believe this application of Transportation would apply to any of the Surges that usually require touch, such as Cohesion, Adhesion, or Regrowth . . . This is actually an incorrect assumption, please disregard along with the following example. But my ultimate point about mixing Surges still stands, damnation it! Transportation & Progression Regrowth is a powerful application of the Surge of Progression that allows healing and even resuscitation, but is limited to the user physically touching the recipient. However, let us imagine that the Herald Vedel (Progression & Abrasion) borrowed her Honorblade to the Herald Battar (Transformation & Transportation), allowing the latter to use both Honorblades at once. This, along with presumably unlimited Stormlight provided by Honor, would allow Battar to heal many people remotely. She could perhaps heal an entire army at once this way. Adhesion & Abrasion Adhesion, a Surge that sticks things together, and Abrasion, a Surge that can be used to ignite and degrade matter, including humans. Perhaps a Herald wielding these two Surges could stick many enemy's feet to the ground at once, locking them in place, and then use Division to set the ground alight. There are many different applications of these mismatched Surges, and I believe that these incredible feats of power (along with the Herald's normal prodigious use of the Honorblades) greatly contributed to their staying power in the minds of the people of Roshar. I would love to hear your ideas on the different ways the Surges could be combined in non-organic ways (that is, combinations that do not currently exist in the Radiant Orders). As always, thank you for reading, and I hope that you had to google apotheosis, a fun new word I learned today while researching this topic

  17. I would like to apologize to Ventyl. I have behaved in a manner that does not reflect the trivial nature of games. I shall attempt to move on from the Ventyl discussion as it really doesn't matter what they do, since the only way to verify their actions is to risk the life of someone else. For now, we should be attempting to find alternative lynch candidates. I can't think of any, sadly. Does anyone else have any major suspicions that do not include Ventyl, TJ, or Sart [my current "don't want to lynch" list]?

  18. While I agree that it would be cool, I personally don’t think we need any more allomancer main characters in era two. It’s just personal preference, but I’d like Steris to stay as she is in terms of allomantic power. I like having that character who is ordinary in a world where there are people who can effectively fly, manipulate emotions and have superhuman strength. This also provides space for her individual strengths to shine, without being overshadowed by flashy powers. Additionally, her skills don’t lie in fighting or espionage, so while it may be interesting to watch her try to grapple with the powers the come with being a mistborn, I don’t think it’d suit her overall character. A mistborn character would also probably be too over-powered, considering that there are only mistings in era two.

  19. I am a HUGE Steris fan but I don't really think that is her style. It would be interesting to see her wield the bands of morning(or just carry them in her purse for a while) but I don't think the offensive nature of allomantic powers would appeal to her much. Maybe put her in charge of Kandra security for the bands? She and Wax could kind of play against each other with her trying to anticipate everything he would do to get them and him trying to figure out how to break in past her security.

  22. The scripts of Roshar are completely unintelligible to me. They look like pictures of seismograph readings. But is that a coincidence, considering the dawncities may have been made with vibration? Or that Lightweaving deals with all waveform? So much of Rosharan culture ties back to the Radiants and the Heralds in some ways that I can't help but think that they are related.

  28. I don’t think he’d take it back because he wants to rule. But, I think if one person escaped and came begging Kaladin to help them and impressed upon him the responsibility as their Lord, he would internally feel that pressure. Brightlords that disregard and let their subjects die or suffer has been something that repeatedly drives Kaladin to the edge. Roshone, Amaram, Elhokar... each time Kaladin allows his anger get the best of him with them and makes stupid choices. He’d feel responsible to be better.

  31. -> Download Version 0.10 here! <- Hey, y'all! First thread on this forum. I'm a student at Future Games in Stockholm, and this is a pet project I'm working on between classes. I'm working in Unreal Engine 4 and its Blueprint visual coding system. I started this a couple of months ago when I was just done with the Hero of Ages and really into the allomancy magic system. I'm currently on Shadow of Self. No plot spoilers! Goal The goal of this project is to make an FPS-style Mistborn game, where you can play around with some schmexy allomancy. As a fan-made game, this will stay free-to-play. Caveat I want to make a good game representation of the Mistborn books, but some things are blocking the way. School. My time is spontaneously devoted to this project. Me. I'm not the most passionate die-hard fan, I just like the idea of a properly made game, as in true to the material. Controls. I want that feeling of being a cool Mistborn, jumping through the mists, throwing things around. But. Computer/console controls are severely limiting to a magical power that should take your whole body to control (Yeah, who knew, huh?). I want the player to have a good time, regardless of having read the books or not, so I will keep controls from being overly complicated. More advanced moves from the books will probably not be possible, so I will focus on making the general moves feel really cool and make sense for the player. Current features These are the features that I have right now. These will be updated as I go along. The most recent additions are in bold. 32. Talbot Oswin was a man who didn’t have enemies. Of course, you might say, that’s ridiculous. Everyone has enemies. Even worse, some of us have friends. (You laugh at that, now. But the worst enemy is a friend, the close sort. The sort that keeps closer to you than your own shadow. Easiest to hurt that which is dearest to you, that which knows you best. Best keep an eye out for knives in your own back.) But listen. Talbot Oswin didn’t have enemies. Not the former flame, no; they’d met before, and their paths had crossed for a little while before they parted again. No resentment, no bitterness there, surely, nothing left unfinished. Surely not the university chum, in those days of wild abandon, when they caroused and skipped classes to go entertain themselves in the tradition of the young. After all, Talbot Oswin was a Heron, on his ma’s side, and as loaded as they come. Old blood, and old money there, the Herons. In Tremredare in the West, during the days of the Old Empire, it’s said you can’t stumble upon a plot or a business venture that doesn’t trace back to the Herons one way or another. Plenty of amusements you can buy in Elendel, if you’re a young, hotblooded noble, and there was never a vice Talbot Oswin hadn’t tried. Not from fellow nobles either; surely no one at all resented the Oswin marriage to Thekla Heron. A cadet branch of the Herons, all things considered—the Oswins were really nowhere near important enough otherwise. Yet the Oswins moved up in the world with Thekla’s marriage...too quickly, you might think? Quickly enough to ruffle feathers, even? There was no reason for anyone at all to resent or dislike Talbot Oswin. After all, it’s hard to be disliked or hated when you have all the wealth in Bilming and absolutely no compunctions about lavishing it on your companions. And Talbot Oswin was far too focused on his own pleasurable pursuits to really bother with vendettas or feuds, or anything of that sort. Take it from someone who knows, though: someday, your crows come back to roost. So: Talbot Oswin. He had enemies, of course. He just didn’t keep track of them. He never had the energy or time to consider anyone an enemy. But could Talbot Oswin, in his own careless, intensely selfish way have any real enemies, anyone with a grudge burning inside of them, anyone who hated enough to kill? Well. You’ll have to tell me about that. But I’m getting ahead of myself, aren't I? We haven’t come to the deaths yet, or to the corpse. Talbot Oswin, his throat cut like a pig before the butcher’s knife. Or the guests. Let’s start again from the beginning, shall we? It’s a beautiful day, on the outskirts of Bilming, at a manor overlooking the Sea of Yomend. Picture blue skies, with barely any wisp of cloud at all. Picture a gentle sea breeze stirring the flowers. Breezehome, the Oswins call the manor. A summer home, and a place of carefree play. No wonder Talbot Oswin all but took up residence there, in his final months. Talbot Oswin is sitting in his study and writing letters, one after another. Invitations, most of them, in his sloppy calligraphy, because learning to write a decent copperplate or spencerian is too much work for Talbot, and the Survivor defend him from having to learn to print legibly! The letters, ink-blotted and stained and sometimes indecipherable, one after another, will be conveyed on a silver tray to his secretary, the esteemable if intimidating Miss Priscilla, who will in turn be tasked with turning the tortured scraps of card into aesthetically pleasing invitations. Sometimes, she adds flourishes of her own, for authenticity. Talbot Oswin approves, of course. All the less work for him. It’s a beautiful day, on the outskirts of Bilming, and Talbot Oswin is making plans for a party. A grand party; the lavish, sprawling sort you normally see in Elendel. He scrawls invitation after invitation, sometimes adding names from name cards he barely recalls receiving at some function or other. Perhaps an Elendel ball. Perhaps a weekend in Tathingdwel, with an optional hunting excursion. Perhaps a house party in Wyllion, with a detour to the Sea of Yomend for a boating trip. Talbot Oswin is sparing no expense. Since when has he? The remedied invitations leave the Oswin manor, Breezehome, travelling on by the railway and courier post. And that’s where you come in. MR43: Death Comes As The End (aka a Scadrian murderparty) “Life was not a matter of safety — it must be hazarded to win the game.” —Death Comes As The End, Agatha Christie To tell you the truth, I should’ve never accepted the invitation. And neither should you. Bit too late for that now, though. If House Oswin had gathered and collectively decided to produce the greatest waste of space, the most useless person ever since the Catacendre—then they couldn’t really have done any worse than Talbot Oswin. Talbot Oswin; flirt, rake, dabbler, wastrel. Throws the best parties, though. Guess it must be nice to never run out of Mam’s cash. Mam was a Heron, see. Born rolling in the money, as they say. ‘Course, all of that’s besides the point. Talbot Oswin now, he’s dead. Never thought a berk could bleed out that much. The more you know. Shame about the carpet though. And the wine. Thing is, someone iced Talbot Oswin. And with the manor locked tighter than a gixie’s purse, we’re shut in here with them as did it. You’d best be finding them soon, Chief. ‘Cause Talbot Oswin? He didn’t just fall onto a knife now, did he? He was helped. Takes a certain coldness to cut a man’s throat as he’s lying there, helpless, like a trussed pig. That sort of scum? They’re as like to strike again. General Rules: Win Conditions: The Manor: Roles: Sign-ups have opened and will remain open until 5th July, 2200hrs, GMT+8. (Same as any normal rollover for this game.) The IM for this game will be @Fifth Scholar. As indicated in the rules, I'd like to draw your attention to two other things: 1. The current win-con requires the Killers to lynch the Secretary. They may choose to do so by outnumbering the guests. They may not. (This is under discussion and if there is a change, I will inform you all before the game starts, and once again on C1.) 2. This is a partial blackout game, though you really don't have to be Hercule Poirot to figure out what's going on underneath the hood. But again, I make no promises whether this is balanced because RNGesus sometimes desires sorrow and suffering. Play at your own risk. 3. The third thing, because I apparently have a worse memory than the Spanish Inquisition - sign-up RP is fine, but please don't RP yourselves at the party yet, as the party hasn't started Thank you! 33. Today Brandon replied to some Reddit threads about his 2020 plans after he finishes Rhythm of War, and talked about the timeline for The Lost Metal! Hooray details, hooray Brandon being transparent with us. Please note that these aren't surefire things, and this is the "perfect world" sort of scenario. First up: looks like Rhythm of War is taking a week or so longer than planned, with its turn in date now being July 10th (it was originally July 1st). The Stormlight novella, which will part of The Way of Kings leatherbound kickstarter tiers, will be up next. Brandon plans to write it mid-July to mid-August, beta read it late August, and then do revisions in early October. Lastly, the copyedit done mid-October, to get to people a month before Rhythm of War. To me this is a pretty tight timeline, and Brandon does admit things can slide and he'll try to be up-front about it. The novella may not be called Wandersail, as that is the ship's name, but this novella doesn't have to do with Hoid's story in The Way of Kings. Later in the year, he will work on Skyward 3, then with the goal to begin The Lost Metal, the fourth Mistborn Era 2 story, on January 1st, 2021. After that, it's the fourth and final Skyward book, with a target for starting on Stormlight 5 the following January. Also, Brandon wants to fit in a "quick draft" of Songs of the Dead (formerly Death by Pizza), and probably will push back a revision of The Apocalypse Guard a bit later. So, you know, I'd say that after Rhythm of War finishes, fitting in a novella, Skyward 3, Lost Metal, Skyward 4, that's pretty productive for the time in-between Stormlights. That doesn't even include any of the other projects, like Apocalypse Guard, Songs of the Dead, Alcatraz 6, or whatever else that might pop up. Sounds good to me. In case you missed it: Brandon posted a large blog post on The Way of Kings leatherbound Kickstarter, which has updated tiers from what we previously reported. The Kickstarter goes live July 7th!

  34. If Striker and TJ were both elims, it would have been relatively easy to lynch either Gears or Ventyl instead of committing to lynching each other, especially if there were more elim vote manipulators than just TJ. On a less mechanical note, I don't see Striker volunteering to be bussed D1 since he 1. Gets lynched D1 frequently, though a bit less so recently and 2. Isn't evil often and would want to live. Only the squire would know whether Ventyl was telling the truth if they don't claim, and if nobody says anything we have no way of knowing whether a squire was made or not or even whether Ventyl tried to squire. Since the odds of Ventyl being an elim are higher than the odds of him being a roleless villager at this point, it's not that useful for a squire to confirm whether Vently was telling the truth about being a Knight. Maybe if PMs go up it would be worthwhile to tell someone, but not incredibly valuable. I do think with an elim dead and some decent village candidates it's worthwhile to risk wasting stormlight to open PMs. Alignment scans are pretty useful though, and Striker asking about Gravitation/Progression/Abrasion does make it seem that the elims have Gravitation available to kill anyone not protected by Progression.

  38. I think you mean not necessarily. I am new, but an RAFO is neither a yes or a no to me. Also, if you have a source for Unity being a pronoun, I'd love to see it. I place a big emphasis on capitalization in my own reading.

  41. Of course. That's why it is not at all definite, just as Lirin's inclusion isn't either. Although, to be clear, I don't think that she will get several interludes or chapters either. As I stated above, one of the minor PoVs in Group 1 "might just appear in other viewpoints, save for an interlude," which I would expect to be Syl if she is considered to be in the format.
