  1. I've been thinking for some time about the presentation of disability and chronic pain in Brandon's novels. I've been rereading a number of his books to refresh my memory on some of the details as well and I ended up with a lot of thoughts. I've written him a letter trying to provide some insight and I think it's a topic worth discussing here as well. Fair warning: it's kind of...long. But I think it needed to be to really unpack and explain what I wanted to talk about. Spoiler Warning: The letter includes direct spoilers for Mistborn, Stormlight, Elantris, Warbreaker and Reckoners. But other books are relevant to the topic as well. If you haven't read some of Brandon's books and are concerned about spoilers this is not a safe thread to read.

  2. It was some time before Darson returned from wherever he had taken Pyria, though the young loyalist was no longer with him. The remaining few allomancers and feruchemists were still in the main room, as Darson’s hazekillers were not letting them leave. Tensions were high, as they knew that one of them must be a loyalist. All eyes turned towards Darson as he entered the room, a hazekiller shutting the door behind him. There were six of them now. Lance Neverwatch, Lahilt, TJ Shade, Lumen, Faleast, and Reginald. One of them was a loyalist. And one of them was a Kandra. Darson had been sure to keep his hazekillers in pairs of two so the Kandra could not infiltrate their ranks. “Well, I’ve got good news and bad news,” Darson said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Fortunately, the young Pyria was able to be...persuaded into telling me that only one of you is a traitor. Unfortunately, she did not know the identity of her compatriot.” Darson watched as the six men and women before him avoided his eyes as he looked across them. All except for Lumen, the young woman who no one had been able to quite figure out during their extended stay here. Several moments seemed to pass, each one stretching on for what felt like minutes, the sweat beginning to bead on the foreheads of the people gathered in the room as they waited for Darson to speak again. Finally, Darson grew tired of their silence. “Fine,” he said, pointing to one of his hazekillers who moved towards Lahilt and grabbed him. “If you will not reveal yourself, I will simply kill each of you one by one.” The hazekiller brought a knife up to Lahilt’s throat, ready to cut his neck- “It’s me,” Lumen says, stepping away from the others. “I’m the loyalist.” The others all turned to stare at her. Darson smiled. “Thank you. Kill her.” The hazekillers all pulled their guns out to shoot her, but in the blink of an eye she was behind the hazekiller who had been holding Lahilt and shot the man in the back of the chest with his own gun. The metalborn scattered as several bullets from the hazekillers made their way through where Lumen had been just a moment ago. “Don’t let her escape!” Darson yelled. From his pocket, he pulled out a vial of steel flakes from his coat. Quickly, he popped the cork from the vial, swallowing it down, eyes peering around for Lumen, who’d flashed again and had a dagger up against the throat of another hazekiller. Darson fumbled at a coin, shot it off trying to aim at Lumen’s head, but too slow - a line of red appeared at the hazekillers throat as he collapsed and Lumen was nowhere to be seen. “She went this way!” called one of the others. Faleast rushed towards one of the corridors, and Darson followed, grabbing a few more boxings from his pocket. He looked down the corridor, and saw Lumen bolting down it, trying to find some exit. Darson smiled - even with her new abilities, there was no way he missed. Carefully, he judged the angle, feeling the coin in his hand, when he felt something go through his chest - he looked down, and saw long, silvery claws poking through his chest. He looked over at Faleast… only it wasn’t Faleast, not anymore. Slowly, Faleast’s face began to morph between faces Darson knew - Araris, Xino, Kynedath - though each one was slightly wrong, as if their features were being mixed and melded together. All of them were smiling at him. “It will be… good, to add another face to my collection,” the Kandra whispered, sliding between its many faces. Darson felt the silvery mass slowly spreading across him, over his chest, up onto his face. He tried to scream, but it entered his mouth, blocking off all sound. It swarmed over his nose, his eyes, until his entire face was covered. He couldn’t breathe, he could only feel the kandra’s slimy mass slowly… absorbing him. Darson’s lungs were fighting for air - desperately, he shot the remaining coins in his hand out through the Kandra, but if the Kandra even noticed the attack, it didn’t give a sign. His body convulsed, but gradually, his thrashing died down, as Darson faded into unconsciousness. There was a still silence for a few moments after Faleast and Darson followed Lumen down the corridor. There had been a few moments of chaos as the hazekillers’ bullets had grazed against some of the metalborn, but Reginald was fine. At least, he felt fine. He quickly checked his body for wounds, as maybe he had been hit and the adrenaline of the moment had made him not notice it. Thankfully there was no blood anywhere, so he was probably fine. Finally, after what felt like an eternity as the hazekillers tended to those who had remained in the main room, Darson returned alone from the corridor, his gun in his hand. “Lumen was waiting for us,” he said calmly. “She got Faleast, though I managed to shoot her before she could get away. Is everyone alright?” Since when has Darson ever cared about our wellbeing? Reginald thought to himself, watching the man carefully. He walked as if he were afraid, when normally even the way he walked would command the attention of the room. His eyes darted across the room, as if he were looking for ways out of the building. “We’re alright,” TJ said, slowly standing up. Lahilt and Lance had been injured, and TJ and the hazekillers were helping them. “You really got her? So this is all over?” Darson nodded, stopping a little bit away from TJ and talking to him, though Reginald was much closer to him. He studied the man, something in him telling him something was wrong. “Sorry to interrupt,” Reginald said, “but I’m curious why you appear unharmed, if you say Lumen attacked you and Faleast?” The room froze for a moment as everyone held their breath. Darson looked at Reginald for a moment before lunging at him, his hands turning to claws. Reginald leapt back, tapping pewter to gain some strength as the Kandra recovered and lunged at him again. The two struggled for just a moment, before a bullet tore through the Kandra. It quickly glanced around and saw the others rushing towards the two of them, then made a dash towards an exit, forgoing Darson’s bones as it squeezed its body through the cracks of a window. “Quickly!” Reginald said, heading back towards the corridor where the Kandra had come from. “Lumen is probably still alive! The Kandra must’ve taken its chance to try and escape during all this chaos.” The others followed him as he raced down the corridor, his eyes straining to find Lumen in the darkness. She must’ve shot out all the lights in the corridor as she’d gone through. The corridor led to a dead end. “There’s no windows,” Reginald said, “she has to be in one of these rooms. Carefully start opening each door.” They spent several minutes going through and opening every door in the corridor to no luck. Finally, they narrowed it down to one more room. They gathered around the door as Reginald carefully set his hand on the doorknob. He opened the door, bursting into the room. Lumen fired off a quick shot at him, but thankfully it hit the metal armor he had under his clothing. He stumbled backwards, hitting a hazekiller behind him as they entered the room. A coin flew from TJ’s hand towards Lumen, then suddenly veered over to the left once it got close to her. Reginald blinked and Lumen’s knife was in his side. He tapped pewter once again, grabbing onto Lumen before she could get away. She made to pull away, but Reginald would not let her go. The others froze in place as the two grappled, before Lumen kicked his knee and he fell to the ground, pulling her down with him. They rolled even farther away from the others, and for a moment they moved towards them before they once again froze in place. Reginald was pinned by Lumen, though she was struggling to maintain her control over him as she attempted to pull a knife out of her belt. Reginald managed to get a hand around her wrist and snapped it, the knife falling to the ground. He flipped her over, grabbing the knife as he did so, and quickly stabbed it into her chest. Lumen gasped up blood as she looked up at Reginald, the life fading from her eyes. “Long live,” she coughed up some more blood as her dying voice rasped out the words, “the old Elendel.” Reginald pushed the knife further into her chest and the last of her life faded from her eyes. The others began to move again, rushing towards him as he sat up. It was over. Finally, after a week of nothing but death and accusations and treachery, it was all over. The Game is Over! Congratulations to the PRE Operatives for winning the game! I'd also personally like to congratulate 2 players - @The Young Pyromancer, for convincing literally everyone in the game that you were a villager and compromising all their trust groups - that's really tricky to pull off, and if a few things had gone differently in the last 2 cycles, it could have won you the game. And secondly to @Ashbringer, who had an uphill battle after becoming Kandra much less than halfway through the game, and still managed to do really well, being one of the last 5 players to stay alive. Striker and I will probably post our respective GM Thoughts over the next few days. Docs and Links: Elim Doc Kandra Doc Spec/Dead Doc GM Spreadsheet (2 quick notes: 1 - Don't open this on your mobile, you might crash your phone. 2 - There are quite a few errors in here Striker and I couldn't be bothered fixing. To see peoples boxings each cycle, go to the boxings tab, not the main sheet, which is wrong.) Player List:

  3. Hello everyone! I am Keria but I call myself KAJ. It stands for Keria's Art Journey. I just found out about the forum site when browsing to see if there were any artbooks out there for the stormlight archive series! I have to say I really really really enjoy the series! I first came across the book as a freebie on Kindle some years back. It was the first book "The Way of Kings". Ever since then I've been hooked! After I finish up some projects I plan on doing a fan art project for the character's culture and races extensively. Going to be fun gaucho!

  5. Again my comments are meant to add context. See below: Again, the point of the exercise was not a lesson. Jasnah would have taken the action regardless whether Shallan entered her life or not (if the formatting is screwy, bold, or blue, it is because I am copying from my older thread "Jasnah More Than Meets the Eye" where I quote every instance regarding Jasnah to promote discussion) Jasnah leaned back, watching the city pass. “I did not do this just to prove a point, child. I have been feeling for some time that I took advantage of His Majesty’s hospitality. He doesn’t realize how much trouble he could face for allying himself with me. Besides, men like those …” There was something in her voice, an edge Shallan had never heard before. What was done to you? Shallan wondered with horror. And who did it? “Regardless,” Jasnah continued, “tonight’s actions came about because I chose this path, not because of anything I felt you needed to see. However, the opportunity also presented a chance for instruction, for questions. Am I a monster or am I a hero? Did I just slaughter four men, or did I stop four murderers from walking the streets? Does one deserve to have evil done to her by consequence of putting herself where evil can reach her? Did I have a right to defend myself? Or was I just looking for an excuse to end lives?” Jasnah was not concerned with witnesses because (list form because they are fun for me): 1. Shallan was a witness. Jasnah did not threaten, coerce, or take any action whatsoever to prevent Shallan from running straight to the authorities. 2. Like the murderers, Jasnah at no point made any effort to conceal her identity. She walked the length and was observed entering that location and that alley by multiple individuals (as per Shallan. I would post the quote, but then the list would become rather hard to read. If you like, I can add that later. Just ask). 3. She is the only individual not associated with the ardents with a soulcaster. A soulcaster she is open and notorious about owning and using. It would not take rocket science to link her to those individual's deaths. Although it is not conclusive, Jasnah presents a long list of information regarding the circumstances of those murderers, and also states that she feels she should be doing more with her soulcaster. So both of those combined, lends me to believe she researched the situation extensively before taking action (as we have seen her do so with Aesudean (I always screw up her name, the prior Queen), Shallan, Amaram, and so on). Once she was sure of everything she told Shallan, she took action. From her own lips, it appears this was the first, or among the earliest actions she has taken in this regard: “The city watch,” Jasnah said, “has done nothing. Taravangian has sent them several pointed reprimands, but the captain of the watch is cousin to a very influential lighteyes in the city, and Taravangian is not a terribly powerful king. Some suspect that there is more going on, that the footpads might be bribing the watch. The politics of it are irrelevant at the moment for, as you can see, no members of the watch are guarding the place, despite its reputation.” “If it helps you wrestle with your feelings, child, understand that I was trying to do good. I sometimes wonder if I should accomplish more with my Soulcaster.”

  6. Factions: Knights Radiant Mechanics: Knights Radiant Surges: Action Resolution and Information: Basics: Welcome to Long Game 67! This is a rerun of Long Game 13, so go check that out for an idea of how this game might work! There have been a few fairly minor changes, which are listed along with the clarifications in this document. Please let me know if you have any questions. RP Background: You're a group of refugees planning to make your way across the Shattered Plains, with the goal of getting to the Oathgate and teleporting to Urithiru. On the first day of the game, you will be departing the camps. The game will start a little over a week from now, on July 1st at 1:00 PM EST. 1:00 PM EST will probably be the normal rollover time. This game should not end up overlapping with QF45 or LG66. Player List: Spectator List: Quick Links:

  7. The map of Roshar included in the Way of Kings shows several cities that were not important (or even mentioned as far as I can remember) until later books, and some which have still not played a significant role. For example, Mourn's Vault, Eila, Elanar, and Varikev have still not played any major role. Others like Rathalas or Azimir were unimportant in book 1, but became very important in Oathbringer. So obviously, Brandon has plans for the cities that were labeled on that original map included in book 1. Mourn's Vault sticks out to me especially, since Brandon has said, which sounds to me similar to the effect Re-Shephir had on Urithiru before Shallan drove her out. So I wondered, could there be one of the Unmade currently or historically residing at Mourn's Vault? First, I ruled out several. Not Re-Shephir, since she was residing in Urithiru until recently. Not Moelach, who was in Kharbranth and now the Horneater peaks. Nor was it Nergaoul, who has been active in Alethkar, Jah Keved, and the Shattered Plains. Next, I ruled out Ashertmarn. The Heart of the Revel just doesn't sound like it would cause an area to be considered "not a pleasant place." My best guess as to where Ashertmarn resided prior to Oathbringer would be somewhere in the Reshi Isles. I haven't found anything that suggests Yelig-nar affects to area around itself. It seems that it only affects a person who attempts to bond with it. So, I ruled out Yelig-nar. Ba-Ado-Mishram was imprisoned during the False Desolation, and I don't think an imprisoned Unmade would affect the region around them. The other four three, Chemoarish, Dai-gonarthis, Ba-Ado-Mishram and Sja-anat were harder to narrow down. Corrupted spren would certainly make an area "unpleasant," though I think at least one of the characters would know about corrupted spren if they were anywhere in Alethkar. I suspect that, until the events of Oathbringer, Sja-anat resided somewhere far from Alethkar, but I can't entirely rule her out as a possibility. Dai-gonarthis is hard to rule out, since we know so little about him. But, if he were free, I suspect that more regions of Roshar would have suffered Aimia's same fate. Mourn's Vault does not seem to be on the verge of destruction by an Unmade, so I doubt that Dai-gonarthis is there. Which leaves us with: Chemoarish. She is also known as the Dustmother, and is commonly mistaken as the Nightwatcher, whom it is confirmed that she is not. Little else is known about her, but the title Dustmother makes me think that she probably has a regional effect, much like Moelach or Nergaoul, which would explain why Mourn's Vault is "not a pleasant place."

  8. I had figured Mist’s Village Core Elim had to be Pyro, because it couldn’t be TJ the Coinshot and Mage made no sense. I was trying to get you to confirm that by pushing his kill. I honestly didn’t mean to kill you Pyro. That’s what I was trying to tell Mist in my overly-cryptic message about my action failing. I submitted a kill on Pyro, then went to change it to Mage at the last minute (literally), only for someone IRL to ask me something and make me put my phone down... then as soon as I get the chance to type the little popup of Striker closing the turn came... Then I thought that would be a really wierd night with 4 attacks and survives (Pyro surviving my hit, me surviving Mage’s retribution, Mage surviving TJ’s hit, and Mist surviving the Elim hit.) But no, you died and then it was over for Mist. The result, however, is that me and Araris killed more Elims than the village put together Araris hit Xino (Kandra 1, PRE 0). Village!Me started the Ventyl lynch and Kandra!Me made sure to finish it (Kandra 2, PRE 0). Both me AND TJ hit Kynedath (Kandra 2.5, PRE 0.5). TJ hit Kidpen (Kandra 2.5, PRE 1.5). I hit Pyro (Kandra 3.5, PRE 1.5). Finally Mist, for a total of: Kandra 3.5, PRE 2.5

  9. [See the end of this post for the June 23 updates.] To see this article in Spanish, you can see the translation here on cosmere.es. Some interesting things came out of Reddit today. User u/DataLoreHD did some sleuthing and discovered a few very interesting entries on Recorded Books, Inc., with some release dates. Firstly, The Original--the audio original story written with Mary Robinette Kowal--would be released September 14th 2020, and narrated by Julia Whelan. Then, interestingly, there's a Stephen Leeds story, in the Legion series! It's Stephen Leeds: Death & Faxes, to be released September 1st, 2021. Lastly, there are two Dark One things as well. One is Dark One: Prophetic Histories coming February 9th, 2021, and the other is Dark One: Forgotten, releasing May 5th, 2021. So this is clearly from the publisher of these audiobooks and are marked as "RB Exclusive". Brandon did recently say The Original would be out around August so I believe the September release date for that, but we've been burned by White Sand release dates before, so I'm not sure about those other dates. But, Brandon did comment in the thread about this, and said the Stephen Leeds: Death & Faxes is an official title. He wanted to get a Stephen Leeds show made but had difficulty with it, so this audiobook series would be like a pilot to a "television show", except it's a book. He'd be overseeing the project like a show runner but not necessarily writing the individual episodes. Brandon didn't comment on the Dark One things yet, but I suppose that seems like they'd be audio originals as well, to go with the multimedia nature of Dark One? On the recent livestream, Brandon said the Dark One stream which will be available to those who preorder it is apparently sometime this week (we don't know the day yet), so maybe we can learn more there. Mistborn Screenplay Changes In the last livestream, Brandon discussed the Mistborn screenplay he's working on (look about 37 minutes in). He said that Ham would now be a woman, which he's mentioned before as being a regret in Era 1. A new fact, though, is that Dockson would also be changed to a woman. Then he was thinking Mistborn would be a film, Well of Ascension would be a TV show where we can get more detail on the crew, and then Hero of Ages would be another film. Then, today, Brandon commented on a few more changes to Mistborn in its screenplay: I'm not sure who would really make two films with a TV show in between. That seems pretty optimistic. Brandon also commented that this Mistborn film would really be a sort of alternate version of the cosmere. I think that, at least, is a good decision. Adaptations will not be the same as the books, and I think they should definitely be tailored for the medium. There are of course good and bad ways to do it, but I like that Brandon is working on this screenplay. Of course, it's important to remember this is all hypothetical and no one is attached to actually make these films. Thanks @DataLoreHD and @Use the Falchion for their research which we used for this article. June 23 Updates It's been only a day and Brandon has revealed some additional details about all of this! First, a big change to how the magic works. In the Mistborn movie atium will be usable by all Allomancers, not just Mistborn and Seers! It's something Brandon says he wishes he'd done from the start. As he (and we) has gotten further in the cosmere, using a god metal - something both powerful and rare - just in the context of Mistborn "has felt off" to him. This likely means that we'll start seeing god metals be used around the cosmere in the (distant) future; in fact, Brandon says that atium (and its alloys) would be good at resisting Shardblades - though that's not a confirmation that we'll see it used there. This change allows him to tie some movie story arcs nicely. House Venture can now better serve its dual purpose of safeguarding the atium and controlling Luthadel, because its Allomancers can use the atium as a last resort during a rebellion. This gives Ham an additional reason to join the House guard - so she can keep an eye on Shan Elariel Venture, learn where the atium is, and steal it. Go read Brandon's post, it explains this far better than this short summary can. And, in other news, we now know a little more about those Dark One audio productions. The TV show is still happening, and the graphic novel is (obviously) also still happening. But in addition to those, Brandon is producing a couple of audio dramas. Prophetic Histories is an audio novelization of his DO outline, and Forgotten is "this wacky idea I had for a "Serial" style podcast, with a journalist tracking a killer, which ties into all of this."

  10. For myself, although Shallan is admittedly an unreliable narrator, I do not see it being plausible that Shallan would be in error of the basics of the legal system of Kharbranth. As a scholar, as well as simply a person living in a city, I would imagine she would have a basic understanding of what the process and penalty for murder is in that particular locale. Further, considering as per Sigzil, there are other nations with such inventive forms of execution as "has eyes of blue and red" or "the hog", I personally do not feel it would be a stretch that hanging would be the go to solution for a couple of murderers of affluent women (the path is well known and the shortest from the theater district, as well as notorious enough to reach the king's ears himself). So although I acknowledge it potentially, possibly could have plea bargaining (though I do not personally believe so myself), for myself at least, unless the murderers were still able to use their bribery or connections to get out of it completely, as per Shallan, I believe there is only one destination for these individuals. The hang man's noose. But to each their own.

  12. *sigh* Here we go again. @Frozen Mint Not taking any strong stances? I was the only person defending Pyro's actions as NAI. A defence like that is sure to draw attention, and that's exactly what happened. I suggested the Silber lynch and did not change my vote after. How is that not a strong stance that I'm willing to lynch them? Anyone else felt like this? Or was I calm and composed when defending myself and gave logical and sound reasoning for my actions? @Ventyl, how did you reach the conclusion that I have a higher chance of being elim than Pyro? @MysticLotus, there was just one vote on Sil when I voted for them. How is that jumping on bandwagon? @Eternum My defence of Pyro's actions were my own, not based on other player's reads. It's from my experience of playing with them. I did not use Devotary's post as a reason as she told them she believes him when he said his votes on Fifth were a placeholder. I said him shift votes and retracting them for no reason in normal for him and shouldn't be AI. There's a difference. You are tunneling, man. You're tunneling hard. You over-analyzed my vote Xino, and you're over-analyzing vote on Sil. Either that or you're setting me up for a mislynch seeing as you planted the seeds of my suspicion back in C1. You're also conveniently ignoring the valid points I made in my defence, like the choice of xino as the elim kill wouldn't make sense if I was an elim since it would directly implicate me. Your whole response seems to just want to brush off my defence rather than understand my reasoning. While that's good tactic, it's also important to try and understand the intentions of a villager trying to prevent his mislych. Think from both sides, what would you do if you were a villager trying to prevent your mislynch? Since you're fine with lynching me because I was the first one to suggest a Silber lynch, then it's only fair, by your logic, that it would be make sense to lynch you next cycle when I flip village because you are the first one to start a train on me. Do you think that's fair? No I did not. Not even this cycle if you notice. I did not feel convinced by a single player's reasoning that showed they were elim. Don't you guys think something is inherently wrong that there were trains only on me and Pyro? That too in the very 2nd cycle? With not enough solid reasoning because apparently majority of the people who voted for me just seem to take my vote for Silber into account, and nothing else. Elims easily have 2 cycles of mislynch by building a train between a C1 suspicion and their defender. My vote at the end was purely self-preservation since I did not know the vote count at that time. Huh, explain this please? I was never on the Pyro party. See this is what I'm talking about. Too many false assumptions flying about, whether deliberate or not. How? As I stated earlier, I voted purely out of self-preservation because I did not know the vote count at the time. Wait, I don't think I understood your statement. Do you find my vote on Pyro suspicious or that I'm the most suspicious of the voters on Pyro? Also, Striker, your reasoning on me is very vague. "His posts seems off","His votes seem off". What exactly is off? Please explain. If it's a gut read, then say so. I think the person who mostly understood my intentions is Fifth. His read on me mostly explains what I'm been intending to tell from my posts. Elims seem dead set on my mislynch, with players finding fault in each and every one of my actions. Vote on xino? Sus. Vote on Sil? Same. Defend Pyro? Elim. Pyro flips elim. Obviously elim. Pyro flips village. Still elim. I mean, am I the only person seeing this? Can we please have a discussion of a player other than me, or should we have a 15+ vote one-man lynch train on me? Still suspicious of Frozen Mint. Anybody willing to go there? I'll try to come up with an analysis post, but I can't do that if I have to keep defending. So any further votes/suspicions and responses to my posts will have to wait after my analysis post.

  15. Hello Cosmere! A friend introduced me to The Way of Kings back in 2018, and I've spent a majority of my free time reading Brandon Sanderson novels since then. That includes both Cosmere (everything but White Sand) and non-Cosmere works (primarily Skyward and The Reckoners). Safe to say, I am now a complete Branderson nerd. Currently I'm due for a re-read of the SA books in preparation for Rhythm of War and am eagerly awaiting my shipment of the Call to Adventure: Stormlight Archive game. I enjoy many fandoms, but this is the first official fan community I've joined, so please let me know if you have any advice for interacting on this site/in the forums. Excited to be here!

  16. Busybusybusy irl because pandemic worklife balance does not exist, and I'm GMing, so yeah, I am gonna play it this way. Minimally active, et al. Sorry not sorry. Kamemesir signing up with less personality than a piece of squashed toilet roll cardboard (yep, been hoarding those.) Just to be explicit (I trust y'all not gonna make me have to say this out loud again) : Anything in this game from me is gonna be a meme under a spoiler tag. Don't open it if you're saving bandwidth.

  17. I'm going to do a full GM Thoughts™ post sometime in the next few days, but for now I just want to say congrats to the village for pulling off that win! And thank you so much everyone for playing! This was so much fun to run, even if it was so absolutely chaotic and messy. Also, please go show your love for Bard by upvoting the writeup. Without his help as my co-GM, this game would've failed miserably.

  21. Pyria...Pyria had betrayed him. He had taken taken effort to make sure she was safe, especially since he felt responsible for her friend's death but, she's been taking full advantage of him. I killed so many innocents and I was actually saving a.. a what? A criminal? No..she was just a kid. They used her like a tool just like they use everyone else. He wouldn't blame her, and he certainly wouldn't blame himself for wanting to protect the young girl. He had no idea how this would turn out, with the kandra and the last Loyalist still about. But he'd try. For now, he set out to search for Reginald as he felt like all this was his fault and he roped Reginald into it needlessly. He owed Reginald at least an apology. He was roaming around the corridor when he heard a grunt and the sound of footsteps approaching his way. He warily checked around the corner to see a dark figure running towards him. As a hazekiller, TJ needed to hide his ability very well to avoid his role among them. This was helped by a special ability he had perfected since a very young age. He could regurgitate items in his stomach back to his mouth. As such, he always swallowed 3 coins and kept them as a reserve in his stomach. Seeing the unknown person, he immediately brought the coin straight from his stomach to his mouth and held it between his teeth. He waited for his moment and spit it out while simultaneously Pushing on it. What he had failed to notice was a small side-opening in the walls into which the assaulter swerved into, but not before taking a shot in the shoulder. He ran to the spot where he had disappeared, but there was no trace of the assailant or the side opening. He'd worry about this person later. For now, he needed to make sure Reginald was alright. They both needed to survive in order to see this through.

  24. It's confirmed that it's the latter: --- I always thought that was the most logical choice, especially since Hoid likes the Shard. But it isn't one we know:

  25. I'm 34, have until now read all things Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker, and everything published from the Stormlight Archives. In addition to reading Branderson, I am now reading The Kingkiller Chronicles for the first time, after having listened to both Writing Lectures and signing Q & A's with Brandon where he mentions Patrick Rothfuss. I also enjoy the Harry Potter book series, and Discworld. I'm a teacher, Whovian, Marvel-ling (that should be a term!), cat mom/slave, wanna-be writer, definite saxophonist, sometimes piano.olayer, and an avid fangirl of so many things, especially Europe (the band, not the continent, although I wouldn't want to live anywhere else)

  26. Whoa, that's a HUGE change. For one, the whole surprise reveal about Yomen will have to go bye-bye... To be replaced with what, if anything? OTOH from another perspective it makes a lot of sense - it's a "god metal" after all, and Scadrians especially all already have some Ruin in them in a very literal way. And it relieves later parts of the story, in Era 2 and so on, of having to explain somehow that Preservation had modified the Allomantic Table to allow for atium Mistings, and then Harmony changed it back to re-add Chromium (and Nicrosil), and also avoid the question of if there were therefore malatium Mistings as well.

  29. Vengeful doesn't necessarily mean 'torture someone until they beg for death' - being vengeful can mean that Jasnah knows that these men needed taking care of and she did it. She just happened to coincide this with a lesson for Shallan. I feel like we also need more information from her perspective to know whether or not this is a 'dealing with the vermin first chance she gets' kind of thing - who's to say that Jasnah hadn't been doing these kind of nighttime forays cleaning up the streets like Bruce Wayne for weeks while she was in Kharbranth? We can only see Shallan's perspective on her time there, which is why I'm so desperate to see her interpretation of things since she is so unknowable most of the time. Also, I'm not saying that Jasnah isn't haughty, but I definitely don't look at this act as classism against the common people.

  31. Thank you for writing this! While I am not sure if my health problems are severe enough for me to call myself disabled (the term seems to have a quite wide definition), I do struggle with chronic pain and fatigue. I agree with what you said in your letter, especially the part about how people say that you shouldn't let your disabilities define you. I would likely be a very different person without the restraints I have, and having had them since birth they are just a part of what I am. My hatred of that fact doesn't do anything to make it untrue. I also agree with how frustrating it is when people suggest doing extra treatments and then think you to be lazy for not trying them- in my case, it is very easy to do more harm than good. While I admire Brandon for his incredible depictions of things like class inequality and mental health, I hope that he reads this letter and can improve upon his writing when it comes to stuff like this.

  32. While I think that this is a hella philosophical debate that clearly hasn't been agreed upon (and probably never will be), I think that this scene apart from being right or wrong, was more of an indication to the audience what kind of a character Jasnah is: deliberate and calculating, with a fierce vengeful streak. The first time I read the scene I was also caught up in the umming and awwing over whether this was 'right', but on my third readthrough (this year), I found myself wondering what had been done to Jasnah in the past that made her take such deliberate action against men who would target women. As such, Jasnah is currently slated to be the flashback character for book 10, so I hope we get more hints at her past before that!

  38. Hey, uh this is Rae here. Crewleader Stink is out for the day, so he asked me to check in on you. Oh. Is that a body? Wait, is that Pyromancer? Look, I know y’all had your disagreements, but that's no reason to kill him! That's the entire reason why we have a crewleader, so we can resolve disputes without killing people! This is, like, the second time you've tried to kill him over an argument. But you actually did it this time. Honestly, it's kind of hard to recognize the body. There’s… a lot of blood. Wait a minute. Who’s that in the corner? Matrim? You’re saying someone murdered him in the middle of the night and stuck him with a spike right through the heart? Gives me the creeps just looking at it! Somebody sort out this mess soon, or else Stink will be forced to disband the crew. Remember, we’re here to steal stuff, not murder each other, and we can’t steal nothing if everybody’s dead. Vote Count: The Young Pyromancer: 14 (Gears, Matrim's Dice, Ashbringer, Straw, Vapor, Shard of Reading, Mist, TJ Shade, The_Truthwatcher, The Young Pyromancer, Frozen Mint, Fifth Scholar, Devotary of Spontaneity, Lahilt) TJ Shade: 4 (Eternum, MysticLotus, Ventyl, StrikerEZ) The Young Pyromancer was lynched. They were a member of the Skaa Thieving Crew. Matrim's Dice was killed. They were a member of the Skaa Thieving Crew. GM Announcement: Votes on TJ Shade as "TJ" are incredibly difficult to see and count. If you intend to vote on TJ Shade, please vote on him as "TJ Shade". If further votes are made as "TJ" and I miss them, I reserve the right to absolve myself of blame and not correct the issue. Player list:

  39. Been super swamped so will not be able to comment the way I would like to, but I figured I would jump on just long enough to add some context that I think is missing from this discussion. 1. Taravangian, the king himself has tried to stop these men on numerous occasions. He has spoken to the guards. Ordered them to catch these men. Unfortunately Taravangian (appearingly) does not have much power in his own city. The guards are bribed not to patrol. Whether it is from a weathy benefactor or not, remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, those men were never going to see justice legally. 2. The men surrounding Jasnah and Shallan had lethal intent. Shallan also confirmed they were no mere cut purses. The "prey" they hunted required the victims to be killed. They could not release affluent women unharmed especially when the men could be identified by the women. None of the men covered their faces. They knew if they were actually tried for their crimes, it would mean execution as per the law of the city. 3. Multiple killings have occurred there before. So these are career criminals 4. Jasnah did not kill those men to teach a lesson. Jasnah did it to help Taravangian who based on the knowledge she had on him at the time (a kindly peacemaker) she greatly respected. If anything she felt she was remiss to not use the powers of the soulcaster more to help people (her words). Shallan was ancillary. It would have taken place had Shallan existed or not. All of these points are quotable taken right from the book. Personally Jasnah does not have self defense because she went out and purposefully looked for those individuals with what amounts to a gun. However, in the circumstance she was in, given the world she is in, and given we do know what her motivations were (she said so herself), I think she was justified. But the earlier points I made were not to argue that. Please feel free to feel however you all wish. Just wanted to provide added context.

  44. More thoughts: Odium could be influencing other shards. Pushing them to extremes in terms of their....domain? Survival becomes paranoia, devotion becomes zealotry, cultivation becomes tyranny. Probably not what's happening, but a good thought exercise.

  45. ...And that's not a bad thing. In fact, I think the circumstances he's been put in makes him MORE interesting because his unchanging hopeful and kind attitude is now tested by the pains of being an Elantrian (pre-restoration, of course). It's really engaging to see this really stable, just overall nice dude get thrown in the dumps... it just makes you root for him more.

  48. Kelsier never proclaimed a "fundamental truth". He did not preach. Instead, he declared himself to be something even The Lord Ruler could not kill: "I am Hope." He exemplified. He had been sent to the Pits of Hathsin, as so many skaa had been before him, to be brutally worked to death. But he alone SURVIVED the ordeal, and came out stronger. When he defied The Lord Ruler to his face, he was killed. And yet, Kelsier SURVIVED. Even death! He somehow, while beyond death, took up the Shard of Preservation, enabling it to SURVIVE being Splintered by the newly freed Ruin. I don't know how much of the events of Mistborn: Secret History are related in the Words of Founding - possibly none, since it's not something Harmony can see in the past as it wasn't done with the power of either Shard - but what he was shown as doing to attain that goal is still very impressive: He refused to succumb to Ruin's taunting him towards despair. He struck out into the CR, found the Ire, discovered the Connection Bomb thingy, and schnookered them out of it. He later released the Shard so that Vin, his Heir, could fully take it up - which she needed to do to "bring destruction to the destroyer", and to save the world. So venerating Kelsier, the Lord of Mists, is to remember his many sacrifices for the good of the world, and just as importantly or even more so, to embrace perseverance of action and hope, faith in one's abilities, and always to fight on and to reach for the future. I don't know how much Spook, the Lord Mistborn, spoke of seeing or working with Ghost Kelsier - possibly only in his secret notebook - but if/when the Survivorists learn that he operated for years after the Catacendre in the Southern Hemsiphere as The Sovereign, there being responsible for their Surviving as well while Harmony sat back and watched events unfold, that would only further illustrate why they venerate the Survivor over Harmony. What is Ruin in their theology? In the past tense, the defeated enemy of Scadrial's very existence, as he sought to destroy it and every living thing upon it. As such, he's invoked as a curse for invective (Rust and Ruin!). And in the present tense, an aspect or component of Harmony.
