  1. Hi all, Time for me to get off my butt and some productive things! I'll be doing some site maintenance at 7pm Pacific (10 Eastern), about four hours from now. I'm not quite sure how long it'd take, but I don't think it should take too long, assuming it goes well! There will be other site maintenance this week as well.

  7. That's true. It's actually quite a challenge to write something happy and bright. ---- Father's Day He’d been pacing for about a half day, but it’s really just been an hour. He was deaf to the panic and frantic atmosphere of the hospital with its bustling personnel in PPEs and the paging of doctors. The door opened. “Mr. Lawson? They both made it. It’s a boy.”

  8. Like Lightweavers, they do not swear Ideals but have to admit things to themselves about themselves. ...But instead of Truths, it's Dares! They have to force themselves to do something they wish they would do. Glys dared Renarin to join Bridge Four, for his Second Ideal! (OK so this is mostly a joke about Truth or Dare, but hey, it's possible...)

  12. I'm back! Having read through the thread, I suppose I'll post my own reads/a short summary with my thoughts. Gears goes for a random vote, says to leave inactives alone and also says he wouldn't be opposed to lynching them in consequent sentences. Supports a random lynch. Honestly very elim-looking at first glance, as both of those options help the elims far more than they help the village, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as a new player. Generally agree with Straw's assessment, but their second comment where they explain they meant random voting until a train forms feels like it could be the result of advice by an elim teammate. Now posts their reads, which are nice to have. Slight elim read, possibly new player figuring it out. Xino points out there is no information to be gained from a random lynch and doesn't seem scared to start a train, I like that. I also don't feel like him being fine with @Lahilt (who has yet to post) getting lynched is suspicious at all. There was no indicator that Lahilt was a bad target, and a poke vote with even some intent behind it is certainly more valuable than usual. No real read, but leaning village. Straw is being proactive and trying to spark discussion, which I like. Not wanting to vote randomly is fair and not alignment-indicative. Spoken a relatively good amount, jumped immediately on Fifth's vote on them which I didn't really like as he's applying his own logic behind voting to another person's vote when the disagreements there have already been made obvious, but it's not really alignment-indicative. Mild village read. Frozen Mint votes on Gears very quickly, but I find it understandable. Posted fairly early, didn't have much to go on and, at that point, had the most reasoned vote. Awfully aggressive, but understandable. Could go either way. Matrim's Dice just posted, as they said they would. Gave their opinion on the main source of discussion so far, had new things to say. So far, mild village read. No read on Striker, Shard of Reading or Mist. Striker has said more than the other two, but there's really nothing alignment-indicative anywhere in their posts. Truthwatcher is honestly confusing me. Against random votes, still votes randomly, stands by vote and an hour later says they won't be online for the rest of the cycle so they wanted to have a vote up, which they could have said with their vote in the first place. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they're still the most blatantly suspicious person so far. Gut says elim, but I'm unsure. Fifth said a lot of things I agree with in his post and I don't think his vote on Straw is very alignment-indicative. Most votes so far haven't really been based on heavy elim reads, so Straw getting up in arms about that is weird, as I mentioned earlier. I greatly dislike the bandwagon that started on him, since very few people have given actual reasoning behind their votes (and they really can't claim they're random votes at this point), but that doesn't mean anything about Fifth. So far, slight village read. Nothing leads me to believe otherwise. Silberfabren seems very paranoid, something they admit themselves. Their suspicion of a Xino-Fifth team was odd, but not very alignment indicative since they didn't really push it at all. Seems fine with Truthwatcher's vote on them, also open with their opinions. Slight village read. TJ Shade I'm unsure of. Says they want to hold onto their vote, then votes on Xino for a reason I don't quite understand. While the obligatory voting may have contributed, I don't like that they wanted reasoned votes but proceeded to vote for Xino for.. not much of a reason. No read, leaning slightly elim. I would greatly appreciate it if Vapor and Pyro gave actual reasoning behind their votes on Fifth (see above for my thoughts on that). I don't like the votes, but they're not really alignment-indicative until I see them say something about them. I do like Pyro less than Vapor here, though: deferring to a more experienced player would be understandable if you were fairly sure they're confirmed, but this is Day 1. Voting on someone just because Straw did feels.. weird. Could even be an attempt at framing Straw if you think hard enough about it. Tell me if I missed anyone or anything, a few distractions popped up as I was writing this and it's not as concise as I would have liked. For now, I'll move my vote from Vapor to Pyro.

  13. I don't have anything to cite for this, but my understanding for the fused becoming so twisted is due to repeated process of dying and returning to inhabit new bodies. The process is probably very traumatic to the soul. Something else just occurred to me. (Again, no evidence, just speculation) Imagine if every time a fused died, it became a new cognitive shadow. Singer A dies, comes back and possess singer B. Now A+B dies, and becomes the cognitive shadow of A+B. Possesses C, now it's A+B+C. Repeat that process 50 more times. It wouldn't even be the original singer any longer, that CS perished long ago, but every time it happens, the copy is imprinting itself onto a new victim... It would be like making copies of copies endlessly, with each one being slightly more corrupted. I don't know if I'm making sense, but think telephone game, except with souls instead of words. It wouldn't come from the magic system, but from that imprinting process.

  14. Oh, ok. Thanks, @Gears! Edit: First impression of the book: The art of the Heralds is beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. And looking at the table of contents, the names of the five parts are a ketek! That is a brilliant idea. Edit No. 2: These questions are rhetorical. Gavilar gave me the creeps in the prologue. I'm not sure if it's because it's from Eshonai's POV or not. We shall see. Renarin needs the spotlight. *scribbles math* Dalinar's a older teen in this flashback? And has no mercy. Just. Wow. Dude. Assassin: Tries to kill Dalinar Dalinar: You wonderful man. Hired. Lirin! Hesina! And baby brother, baby brother, I'm in love. Roshone gets decked. And that's as far as I've gotten! I do wonder what's going on in Kholinar. I remember there being riots in WOR. I wonder what's happening there. Edit No. 3 "It is my solemn and important duty to bring happiness, light, and joy into your world." Aka, Syl explains my life plan. Haven't met Queen Fen, but I think I like her. Elhokar needs a therapist. Her name is Evi. This is going to be fascinating. Strangely, Young D reminds me of Wayne, at least in the pork steak chapter. Shallan's drawings are scaring me just a bit. And that spren. Brr. I'm done with part one! And Jasnah's back. Let's do this, for the Intellectual Queen of Roshar has returned! Edit No. 4 I'd like to see more of Dabbid, Kaladin is a dad, Renarin and Rock need more interactions, and Bridge Four being a supportive found family when Hobber figures out how to breathe Stormlight is all I need. Moash and I don't get along, but I understand him. I don't like him, but I understand him. I love that Bridge Four is growing, but I'll always have a special place in my heart for the original crew. Mr. T's brilliance is both invigorating and terrifying. I still have no idea what the end goal of this book is. I love it.

  15. So, we have a small group of cosmere fans on fb and we were talking about ships and all, and one thing let to another and we came up with weird shardic realizations. A little NSFW, so putting up a warning. And if such posts are not allowed in this forum, by all means let me know or delete it. It's chill. Endowment would be the hottest of all shards because she is obviously well 'endowed'. If Devotion and Dominion were a couple, It would be pretty safe to assume that they were into bondage and stuff. If human x spren is possible, then shallan is the luckiest teenager in Roshar. Cuz pattern vibrates. If there is a survival shard, and the shard holder was female, it is very possible that "there is always another secret" refers to Kelsier and The shard holder's children. There were other way more nsfw stuff, but I am kinda hesitant to put them here :"D

  16. So, given the new information I've been thinking a lot about the different orders and which I would be. When I took the test I got Skybreaker, but here's the problem. I think personal and/or religious morals are just as, if not more important than the actual rule of law. Don't get me won't, law is important and is what keeps society running, but if the law every contradicted my own personal/religious principles I would fight against it. Even now there after things that are legal that I disagree with. So, given all this, I was wondering how far the Skybreaker Oaths could be stretched. We see Szeth swearing to something outside of the law, so I wondered how far this could be stretched. I've come up with two possibilities that we haven't yet seen. 1. An ideology, such as libertarianism or Conservatism. Now, I think these are a possibility, but not a very strong one. Though these ideas can influence people's actions they seem to be a bit to fluid. Many people in this kind of ideology would argue over what to do. The ideology creates a framework, but not one strong enough to hold an external specs of morality for a Skybreaker. 2. A religion. Now, I want to preface this with a couple of things. I'm not here to argue for the truth or not of any religion, in just talking as something for a Skybreaker to follow. Also I know that some religions change over time or by whose in charge, but the same can be said for the law. Also I know that some religions have done terrible things, but again, so have some laws. Finally, I mostly know details about Christianity so if I say something that is inaccurate for a religion I'm sorry. Now, I think this one is much more likely. This leads to a couple of questions that would be very interesting. First, would they hold just the members of the religion accountable out would they try to force it in others? I think this would come down to the religion. If it was a religion that promoted it's spread at any cost there likely force everyone to hold to it. If it was a religion that have everyone the freedom to believe what they want I think they'd only hold the other members of the religion accountable. The second question is what if the religion believes in forgiveness? This would create a very interesting dilemma for the Skybreaker. On the one hand the person may have broken the roles in which case the Skybreaker would feel obligated to administer a punishment. On the other side, if there is the option for that person to repent they would feel bound to give them that choice. TLDR: Thoughts on a Skybreaker sweating to an ideology or religion

  21. As we know on Scadrial, Am I stating the obvious by saying that magic on Roshar obeys a similar system but with respect to your soul? The radiants access surge binding by adding to their souls literally fusing together with a spren. They go from various kinds of broken souls to better people. Old magic, the deals with the nightwatcher, often seem to involve an exchange. One part of your soul for another. Voidbinding accesses the surges by driving people slowly insane, damaging, twisting and deforming their soul. Odium seemingly consumes parts of peoples souls, twisting their souls in a manner reminiscent of Dakhor. Then he seems to return those parts of the soul with voidlight flowing through and around their broken soul. We might then label the Radiant surgbinding, Soul positive, the Old Magic Soul Neutral, and Voidbinding soul negative. Some might object that old magic doesn't fit this theory, you just have to think a little imaginatively about the Boon's and Curses. I know Av's father got a heap of good cloth. Perhaps the Nightwatcher gave Av's father the ability to weave beautiful cloth or knowledge about where he could trade or find cloth. The Nightwatcher in similar fashion offered things to Dalinar that might not technicallybe part of his soul. Perhaps, she meant that she could alter his soul so he could obtain such things. I know Brandon said old magic is suppose to be mysterious and without rules. I suspect that Brandon's desire to invent complex rules to govern magic systems is almost an obsessive disorder. I imagine he interrupts his children to ask why that unicorn has the power to run across water. Anyway, what are the implications of this theory? One implication might be thinking about the Unmade differently. Perhaps the Unmade's power comes from what they lack, not what they are? Nergoul lacks empathy, Ashertmarn lacks hope, Re-Shephir lacks imagination, etc...

  26. I think you misunderstand the skybreakers. They don't have to swear to follow the law of the land they are in - that is just what Nale and the modern skybreakers are doing. What they need to do is swear to follow a set of laws. It can be the laws of the land they are in, or that they can write down their own set of laws to follow, or that it can be the pirate code. Its all good so long as it's external to them.

  30. Why can't you trust a math teacher holding graph paper? Did you hear the one about the statistician? There are three kinds of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't. How do you stay warm in any room? I hate negative numbers, and will stop at nothing to avoid them. After the sheep dog gets all the sheep in the pen, he reports back to the farmer. "All 40 accounted for!!" "But I only have 36 sheep!" Exclaimed the farmer, confused. "I know, but I rounded them up," explained the sheep dog.

  34. We know that Szeth practiced with more of the honor blades than just Jezrien's, and that for his 4th ideal he picked a Crusade to cleanse the Shin homelands, where the majority of the honorblades still reside. So it's a possibility that in addition to being a skybreaker with access to the surges of gravitation and division, he could pick up an honor blade (or even multiple honorblades). I personally think it would be awesome if he picked up Vedel's honorblade, giving him the surges of friction and progression. With friction and gravitation you would have the fastest flying radiant ever, and with suitable quantities of Stormlight the surge of progression would help offset the downsides of wielding Nightblood. I'm hoping in book 4 we get to see more of the Shin!

  35. I firmly believe we'll see this some day. Elsecaller with the surge of Division is a frightening thought. On a more mundane note, I think Hoid could probably hack identity/based magic pretty well if he had Ishar's Honorblade (and it's the easiest way to get those surges without becoming a dual Radiant, something Hoid will probably be particularly opposed to...unless...hmm...). Edit: a Windrunner with access to Transformation and Division. They could lash opponents to them, transform them into something that can combust easily, then lash them back at enemies before exploding them with division.

Any reasons other than players' favored style to give them village reads? Your elims reads are mostly fine and I find their reasons valid as you've gone above just their playing style.

  41. To clarify, when I say I want to promote discussion, I mean I want other people to chime in on our discussion. I do also want Fifth to clarify some of the stuff he's said. @MysticLotus any reasoning for doing a random vote on an active player? You're not really helping with anything. @Vapor reasoning for your vote on Fifth? What specifically do you think is suspicious? @Matrim's Dice you said that Truthwatcher was doing exactly what a new elim would do. What specifically is that? @The Young Pyromancer what makes you suspicious of Fifth? Also, just because someone is good at the game doesn't mean they're village? Very interested by the Fifth bandwagon going on here. Good that Gears has given some reads. I don't really disagree with any of them, but I do find it odd how much he emphasizes that his reads aren't do be trusted. Everyone is biased, and if you're biased too much we'll probably be able to figure it out from your reads. Also, I made a list of players by experience during signups so here it is: Hopefully that's somewhat helpful. Also, players are at different levels so don't rely on this too much.

  44. Oh, I'm thinking about them. I've got the Coppermind page open so I can look at all of them at once, part by part. There's a lot there. Edit So, Venli's got a spren. Interesting. I love how Adolin tries to help Kaladin. Szeth, finally! Oh, Nightblood. Consider me terrified. I love Adolin's fashion talks. Court of Gods. Red painting. It's the one Lightsong liked. the illustration of the watch fabrial looks really cool. I would wear it. Re-Shephir is the source of the Midnight Essence from WOK Azure is Vivenna, isn't she? Ok. Humans are Voidbringers and come from another planet. A little explanation would be nice after that bombshell. One more part to go! Bring on the Sanderlanche. Edit No. 2 Lift is awesome, no pun intended. Renarin had better not die! DALINAR I'm laughing and crying. Stormfather, what's happening. Perpendicularity? Kaladin didn't say the words and needs a hug. Found the long chapter! Double Shardblades, A-ram? (I don't respect him enough to fully write out his name.) I'll admit, that would look cool. What's hapening to A-ram, because growing crystals out of your body isn't healthy. Her name is Mayalaran. This is very cinematic. Renarin POV YES TEFT Moash? Moash killed a Herald. Wasn't expecting that. Lopen: Dramatic Shallan's brothers! I finished the book! What a ride. I never cry during books, but I did when Dalinar said 'You cannot have my pain.' It was so beautiful. I have so many thoughts. Shallan and Adolin are married? Radiant and Veil can talk to Shallan? Jasnah is the queen? Kaladin didn't have his usual power-up either. That was a really good choice. I can't wait for the next book!

  47. I was told to post my Unity theory on here so here it goes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ok here's my crazy theory. I think that Unity is a hidden 17th intent that's distributed among the other shards. I think that Unity will inevitably bring about the rebirth of Adonalsium as part of the Cosmere endgame. Here's my chain of events. When the 16 Vessels shattered Adonalsium they did so by shattering his Unity portion, however that works. This is why when Dalinar says "I am Unity" Odium immediately starts quaking in his boots. "We killed you!!!", emphasis on We. I think the We here is the 16 vessels. By breaking Adonalsium's Unity they were able split him up but because his Unity was the main center of the shattering, each Shard got a little bit of the Unity intent. Whether this was intentional on Adonalsium's part as per some greater plan is up for debate. In any case the strength of the intent was nothing major, not even enough for most of them to notice, but it did influence them to a degree. This is why of the 10 Shards we've seen so far, we see 6 of them pair up on planets. This is in direct opposition to the fact that they all swore an oath to go their separate ways after the shattering. Unity isn't acting in full force here obviously but it's just enough of a nudge for the Shards that have reason to want to live together do so in spite of the oath. Of those six, four of them have recombined, or been Unified, in some fashion. Devotion and Dominion combined to become the Dor and Ruin and Preservation combined to become Harmony. On top of this, I think this theory also explains Autonomy's weird behavior. As the Shard with the most polar opposite intent to Unity she was the one who was able to detect it's influence more easily than the other due to the contrast of intents. Thus she somehow excised the Unity from within her Shard and this caused a second, smaller shattering of Autonomy. This basically leaves Bavadin with a crumbling Shard that can't hold itself together for any length of time. Each of her mini-Shards that resulted from her mini-Shattering has itself taken up the oath to spread out and this time they follow the oath because there's no Unity interfering with it. I honestly don't know if the mini-Shards are being taken up by various other Vessels, i.e. that random guy named Trell from White Sand, or if Bavadin is straight up creating multiple personality offshoots of herself to manage the mini-Shards. In any case, this would explain who is attacking Scadrial in Era 2 as well as explain why they are attacking. Autonomy is likely the only Shard who has caught on to Unity's shenanigans and has a keen interest in preventing them. That's why they are going after Harmony, the person who, arguably, has been most influenced by Unity. I also think that Autonomy has Odium as a bit of a lackey at this point, sending him like an attack dog against the Shards that have the most Unity in them. Ambition first because what's more ambitious than having all the Shardic power to yourself, thus Unifying Adonalsium again. Then Devotion and Dominion because love and control are both closely tied to the concept of Unity. This can be seen in the fact that the three main religions on Sel, Shu-Keseg, Shu-Dereth, and Shu-Korath all are focused on the idea of Unity, simply disagreeing on how Unity can be achieved. Honor is up next because a loose interpretation of Honor could easily turn itself into something similar to Unity and because Honor and Cultivation broke the pact and cohabitated. Thus the endgame for the Cosmere is that the Shards will continue to recombine, creating stronger and stronger gods until they all become one and Adonalsium is reborn. Autonomy is trying everything to prevent this because Unity is antithetical to her intent and Odium honestly just wants to pull a Goku and be "The Strongest in the Universe" so he's not ok with an ever dwindling list of stronger gods either. As a quick mini-theory here at the end I believe that the next target after Honor and Cultivation was supposed to be Endowment. She was showing some signs of Unity's influence. The Pahn Kahl over on Nalthis had a religion founded around the idea of many gods Unifying to become one god and awakening inherently requires some level of cooperation between people for it to work thus signalling to an increasingly paranoid Bavadin that Edgli was "infected" by Unity. Scadrial would have been out of the picture at that point because Ruin and Preservation were about as far from Unity as you could get. They were literally killing each other over a disagreement about how to end the world. Harmony was a major shock and a bit of a wake-up call.

  48. If someone is suspected, they cannot do active harm and can quickly regain trust by being an active player. If someone is trusted, they can do a great deal of harm by misleading the village, and one is loath to vote on a trusted individual. Trust should be reserved for those who have proven themselves and suspicion should be spread widely. I understand your point, but I don't want to write someone off as safe and become blind to their faults. I personally would be willing to remove xino from the vote pool, as they seem far less suspicious than Silber or Pyro.
