  1. mad watcher watched. she was super good at watching. its how she got her name didntcha know? and auctions were great places to watch. especially the silent kind? so much watching trying to figure out who else was bidding on what you wanted and then ki - i mean. watch them. yep. just watch. mad watcher didn't do anything but watch. ever. its why she was mad at it - mad as in so good she was a mad watcher. you know? it certainly wasn't for anything else that word could mean. that would just be....well. mad. so.....i guess this is happening? given the sudden ending of lg65 and orlok signing up for this, there's a tiny part of me that kinda wants to play again, even after the travesty of that qf months ago. so here we go. fair warning - imma be super casual this game. im thinking maybe a mix of burnt and stink casual. if you couldnt tell by my utter lack of capitalization and proper punctuation. also, mild request here - can i ask maybe dont kill me in the first 2-3 cycles? its been a looooonnng while since ive played a game, and even longer since ive played one for any decent length of time and id kinda like to play? twould be nice to see if i can still have fun, which didn't happen during the qf that shall not be mentioned. that qf is like voldemort now. it that must not be named. you dont want this game to become that way too do you? i keep typing commas and apostrophes and have to go back and delete them. this could be interesting. but anywayz. mad watcher signing up. woot. mad watcher out.

Or someone that looked like him? That seemed strange. Going over there, he cleared this throat. "Hello? Is this a good time to talk sir?" Julius waited for an answer, hoping this stranger was more interesting than his job.

  5. Ok here's my crazy theory. I think that Unity is a hidden 17th intent that's distributed among the other shards. I think that Unity will inevitably bring about the rebirth of Adonalsium as part of the Cosmere endgame. Here's my chain of events. When the 16 Vessels shattered Adonalsium they did so by shattering his Unity portion, however that works. This is why when Dalinar says "I am Unity" Odium immediately starts quaking in his boots. "We killed you!!!", emphasis on We. I think the We here is the 16 vessels. By breaking Adonalsium's Unity they were able split him up but because his Unity was the main center of the shattering, each Shard got a little bit of the Unity intent. Whether this was intentional on Adonalsium's part as per some greater plan is up for debate. In any case the strength of the intent was nothing major, not even enough for most of them to notice, but it did influence them to a degree. This is why of the 10 Shards we've seen so far, we see 6 of them pair up on planets. This is in direct opposition to the fact that they all swore an oath to go their separate ways after the shattering. Unity isn't acting in full force here obviously but it's just enough of a nudge for the Shards that have reason to want to live together do so in spite of the oath. Of those six, four of them have recombined, or been Unified, in some fashion. Devotion and Dominion combined to become the Dor and Ruin and Preservation combined to become Harmony. On top of this, I think this theory also explains Autonomy's weird behavior. As the Shard with the most polar opposite intent to Unity she was the one who was able to detect it's influence more easily than the other due to the contrast of intents. Thus she somehow excised the Unity from within her Shard and this caused a second, smaller shattering of Autonomy. This basically leaves Bavadin with a crumbling Shard that can't hold itself together for any length of time. Each of her mini-Shards that resulted from her mini-Shattering has itself taken up the oath to spread out and this time they follow the oath because there's no Unity interfering with it. I honestly don't know if the mini-Shards are being taken up by various other Vessels, i.e. that random guy named Trell from White Sand, or if Bavadin is straight up creating multiple personality offshoots of herself to manage the mini-Shards. In any case, this would explain who is attacking Scadrial in Era 2 as well as explain why they are attacking. Autonomy is likely the only Shard who has caught on to Unity's shenanigans and has a keen interest in preventing them. That's why they are going after Harmony, the person who, arguably, has been most influenced by Unity. I also think that Autonomy has Odium as a bit of a lackey at this point, sending him like an attack dog against the Shards that have the most Unity in them. Ambition first because what's more ambitious than having all the Shardic power to yourself, thus Unifying Adonalsium again. Then Devotion and Dominion because love and control are both closely tied to the concept of Unity. This can be seen in the fact that the three main religions on Sel, Shu-Keseg, Shu-Dereth, and Shu-Korath all are focused on the idea of Unity, simply disagreeing on how Unity can be achieved. Honor is up next because a loose interpretation of Honor could easily turn itself into something similar to Unity and because Honor and Cultivation broke the pact and cohabitated. Thus the endgame for the Cosmere is that the Shards will continue to recombine, creating stronger and stronger gods until they all become one and Adonalsium is reborn. Autonomy is trying everything to prevent this because Unity is antithetical to her intent and Odium honestly just wants to pull a Goku and be "The Strongest in the Universe" so he's not ok with an ever dwindling list of stronger gods either. As a quick mini-theory here at the end I believe that the next target after Honor and Cultivation was supposed to be Endowment. She was showing some signs of Unity's influence. The Pahn Kahl over on Nalthis had a religion founded around the idea of many gods Unifying to become one god and awakening inherently requires some level of cooperation between people for it to work thus signalling to an increasingly paranoid Bavadin that Edgli was "infected" by Unity. Scadrial would have been out of the picture at that point because Ruin and Preservation were about as far from Unity as you could get. They were literally killing each other over a disagreement about how to end the world. Harmony was a major shock and a bit of a wake-up call.

  6. Posting in here to say that things will be a little delayed - turns out this isn't a rollover. It's the aftermath. o.O El's working on writing it, since as you can imagine, there's a lot that just happened - I wasn't kidding when I mentioned death (I just didn't know quite how true that would really be - so many people died! - and no, Araris, it wasn't all because of you (though most of it was)). So, yeah. We'll get the aftermath up, but it might not be tonight. El just went to dinner, and I'll probably be going to bed shortly after she returns. If it's not tonight, it'll go up tomorrow (or Saturday at the latest, but I really don't see it getting delayed that long).

  11. Hello fellow Sharders! I just joined a couple days ago, and hadn't gotten around to posting anything here yet. I've been a fan of Sanderson for a while, and I'm pretty sure I have read the entire published Cosmere. I have wanted to join here for a while now, because of some irritating questions about Nicrosil ferrings in particular, and general theorizing.

  14. Kingston wished that the nice man hadn’t asked so many questions which he was both situationally and physically incapable of answering. The Epic’s curiosity was admirable, but he couldn’t just hand out his marketing secrets to anyone who asked. Imagine the chaos that would ensue if every advertiser in the Alleycity found out that you could sell stuff faster simply by lying about its properties. It could up-end the whole economy! Kingston glanced conspiratorially over his shoulder, then shuffled in close and whispered to NullBlade. “I won’t answer your questions because I have a much cleaner way of dissolving this tension between us. Look at my ribs -but for the Survivor’s sake, be subtle man, I don’t want anyone else to see!” The Smedry pulled open his bomber jacket to reveal a gaping illusionary stab wound, jagged and burnt around the edges, complete with fake blood pouring out thanks to the ketchup he’d smeared there earlier. It was gruesome. As he did, he used his free hand to attempt to pick NullBlade’s pocket, drawing on his years of training from his ex-team of librarian special operatives to try to slip away some sort of identification or TUBA-issued access card. (Author’s note: If he doesn’t carry a wallet or ID card, that’s fine, Kingston will just slip his hand out and carry on.) “I haven’t seen many stab wounds in my time,” Kingston continued, stepping back, “but I reckon this will be enough to fool a couple people.” He suddenly jerked his body backwards, bending at the waist, gaping up at NullBlade in feigned shock. The movement caught the attention of a passing couple. The man grabbed his fiancé’s arm as Kingston showed them the wound. “My word, sir, are you alright?” Kingston locked eyes with him, speaking slowly, carefully stressing each word. “NullBlade stabbed me.” “Good grief! NullBlade stabbed you! Someone should really get a constable. Hello! Has anyone seen a constable?” Behind his double pair of lenses, Kingston’s dark eyes looked back to NullBlade, cold and calculating. He began stepping backwards into the throng of festival goers around them, a growing number of which who had stopped dancing in response to the minor commotion. (Sorry to do this to you, Mathiau. This is going to be awkward when they meet in the next thread.) "Where are those constables, dear? And who the bloody blazes is NullBlade?"

  18. Hi everyone. @Voidus and I were chatting and figured it could be beneficial to make another, more updated hospital/clinic thread that didn't have unfinished plot strings in it like the old hospital thread from... a long while ago. If you have an injured character, you can take them there, and also if your character is having a mental breakdown, or you need a place to house a mentally unstable character, you can put them there too. We brainstormed calling it the Alleycity Recovery Center, or the ARC. I have considered breaking the facility into three "wings": Physical, Cognitive, and Spiritual. Physical damage and recovery is pretty obvious. Cognitive would be for your more mentally unstable characters. And Spiritual damage sounds... complicated. Maybe someone who is still alive after poorly-done hemalurgy, or something of the sort. In any case, I really just needed somewhere to stick Vivica, and since we definitely have lots of characters that either get hurt or go insane, it seemed like a reasonable thread. But, I wanted to check first :]

  19. Yes, I think he would. I think Dalinar would because he understands what that choice is and what it means, and he understands more than ANYBODY in the Cosmere how one can make their own decisions and change. He's not going to kill a child because he isn't that person anymore. Taravangian wouldn't flinch at it, Jasnah could live with the guilt, and I'm sure Nale would do it in a heartbeat, but Dalinar wouldn't. Not anymore. The oaths may allow it, but Dalinar wouldn't allow himself to do it. Dalinar would rather save the world to the best of its ability, allow the child to grow, look for a way to save the world and the child, and then - and only then - he would fight Odium's Champion. Because Dalinar no longer goes into battles for the Thrill. With the Parshendi he wanted to sue for peace (until Venli got her way). With the newly revived Voidbringers he looked for a way to stop the flow without resorting to genocide or killing the Heralds again. With the other Rosharan countries, Dalinar went through GREAT efforts to assure them he wasn't going to take the easy way, the arguably efficient way, and simply conquer the world to unite them. No, Dalinar isn't The Blackthorn anymore, and he's showing it. And he DID try to spare the Rathalas. He talked to Tanalan Jr. in order to show that he came up with an entire plan to spare the storming city. Dalinar was then ambushed, gave into the Thrill, and then destroyed the city. Did he do it? Absolutely. Would he do it all over again or if a similar situation came up? No, not only because he regrets his actions, but because he's changed. You don't have to forgive Dalinar, nor would I ever ask you to. You don't even have to like him. But don't paint him as something he's currently - not previously, CURRENTLY - not.

  21. (Emphasis added) Yeah, the fact that it happened almost at the same time (considering the timespan we're talking about here) almost makes me wonder if Odium meant for the Thrill to get captured, to see what it would take so that he could replicate it forcibly (possibly with the aid of his god-metal in the blade of the knife) with a Herald. Wait. The heralds are cognitive shadows. Humans can bond to Cognitive Shadows like a spren. Does Odium want Moash to forcibly bond Jezrien?? Damnation, if THAT'S what he has in mind... Would that give Moash the powers Jezrien innately has?? Does that include returning to Braize on death?

  22. I would agree, but the way Brandon talked about the groups makes it incredibly unlikely that he is not part of the group format. For Brandon to mention all 5 viewpoint characters in Group 1, even though one of them might just get an interlude, only to not include somebody who will "certainly" get more than 2 viewpoints (with "decent chunk" up for interpretation), would not make much sense at all. While nothing is 100%, and Adolin's exact placement is not directly proven by that WoB, to suggest that he might not even be part of any grouping (or the interlude through-line)--even given that evidence--requires such a big stretch of the information we have, that although it is technically valid, it is not very pertinent.

  26. I'm pretty sure Petar said on Discord that they had the same brief as the UK cover artist. And it sounds like the brief was fairly, uh, brief. So I wouldn't put too much stock in the fine details. The artists definitely haven't read the whole book. The exact thing they're wearing, carrying, etc. could be 100% artist's interpretation. Heck, just look at how different that 4th artist's cover is. Not that speculation isn't fun and worthwhile. I'm honestly kind of expecting the US cover to be the same "scene", so that will be interesting. I SUSPECT Dragonsteel's thought process is: We don't have Shallan on a cover yet, and we NEED Shallan on a cover in the first 5 books. Can we assume she will work on the book 5 cover? Or should we include her now? Now seems wise. Shadesmar is a cool setting that'd be perfect for a cover. Shallan goes to Shadesmar in this book. Let's give the artists a vague description of a Shadesmar scene. (or maybe not even a specific scene)

  30. This is somewhat of a fun, silly, project, so no one take this too seriously. Alright, here is how it works: This is a music cover competition that I have arranged just for fun. Anyone can enter any song from any genre that they wish to, with only a few criteria: In order to participate you must either be one of they whom perform in the recording or you must have recorded it while someone else performs. There are two catagories in which one may perform: Instrumental and Vocal. Instrumental contestant's input may consist of one or more musical instruments played by one or more musicians and is not limited to classical music. Vocals are allowed with: karaoke style instrumental accompaniment; no accompaniment, accompaniment by instrument(s) that is (are) present at the recording; other singers. Contestants shall be judged upon their skill within their genre. Unfortunately, I only have two other people with whom I will work to judge the music, and we may be biased toward our own personally favored music styles (Metal, folk and classical). Accordingly, we will try to pick a favorite cover in each genre that is submitted and have y'all vote which song was most skillfully done across all the submitted genres. Vocal recordings and instrumental recording shall be judged apart. (This is all assuming there are many participants at all, if any, of course.) You can pm your covers to me, ideally in the form of Mp3 or Mp4 files. I am sure that there are many questions still left in answered and I will do my best to fix that in this thread. Your last chance to enter the contest will be upon June the 5th, 1:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time.

  35. Well, another magic girl coming from the country side to help her endangered people. But why not? The rest is actually interesting. IMHO plot is the major problem of the novel. But I think it could be remodelled. For example in three books The War against the Shadow Army - end it with a cliff hanger about a second army forming, but slowly, so they have a few months to years The Investigation The Resolution The abrupt reformation of the Shadow Army invalidated the heroic struggle to save the land. And we really got a lone genius emperor revealing a conspiracy on his own. This need not be done. Amberite looks to be canon now. The problem is that the Aether of Night is a bit unbalanced compared to the Aether of Light. It would be a shame for it to be lost. It would add another sentient species to the Cosmere. So we have the Shard of Competition which had an internal conflict between its aspects of Individualism and Cooperation, which it needed to resolve. Yes, it needs to be boosted, but that can be done. Yes. But the Aethers are still fascinating. And they could play a large role in the Cosmere as such. I can imagine for example, that SIlverlight subsists on Verdant as a staple food for poor people. And that the trade caravans through the CR are using Corpate walkers.

It was as up-to-date to current social rituals as she knew it, one of the many things that she had practiced before putting on her costume. “I am lady Arielle DuPont, of the house DuPont,” she said. At the exact same moment, another man said, "My lady. What is it that you need?" His clothes looked extremely familiar, reminding her of a scam that she pulled just a few days ago. Could it be… Arielle swore internally. Not Lord Hastings! What if he recognized her? She had to get out of here. Arielle forced a vapid giggle. “So many gentlemen,” she said, leaning back and fanning her face a little. “Why, a lady might be overwhelmed at such attention. I am honored to make your acquaintance. I seek nothing today but a little direction. You see, I hail from New Seran, and have become a little lost on the streets. Mayhap you gentlemen know where I might find Dampmere Park?”

  40. WoA is generally considered the weakest of Mistborn Era 1. It definitely suffers from middle book syndrome, though personally, I never had trouble getting through it. I get why people struggle with finishing it, but for me, the pacing never felt too slow. Of course, I've suffered through some terribly boring books, so my perception of slow pacing is skewed. Ever read George Washington's diaries? It's the kind of literature that really makes you appreciate the quick pacing of the Silmarillion.

  41. Yeah, if you read closely, Wax is calling him a "metalborn" in Ch. 4 of Bands of Mourning after VenDell had given his little lecture about the Metallic Arts, including hemalurgy, and discussing the nature of kandra Blessings as an expression of hemalurgy. And he includes MeLaan in that reckoning, who is already going with them ("we could use another Metalborn"). In a kandra's case it really is being "metalborn", because they consider the Blessings as conferring sapience and identity to a mistwraith, i.e., being born. And VenDell's reaction is not upset at being called one, he is objecting to "going into the field" the way MeLaan is. That's not his bag, baby!

Lord of the rings... again, Me when I joined the Shard: I can’t do this, I’ll forget my user, I’ll take the spiked cookies, Sam. Me after the first while: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights I shouldn’t even be here. But I am. It’s like in the great cosmere, Mr. Frodo. The tenth pancakes that really mattered. Full of spikes and shardblades, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know where they came from. Because how could TUBA be real? How could the world go back to the way it was when so many cookies had been offered? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, these spikes. Even Introduction threads must pass. A new post will come. And when the RPs shine they will shine out the clearer. Those were the cookies that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Sharders in those stories had lots of chances of turning away spikes, only they didn’t. They kept accepting. Because they were holding on to something. Me when I joined the Shard: What are we holding onto, Sam? Sam: That the Shard is a great place to Binge, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for. A special thanks to all the Mods, I really appreciate all the work you do on the shard!!! Thank you all for an amazing year on the Shard!!!!

He has to be responsible for everyone but at the same time he has to be able to forgive himself for mistakes. Leadership is too much for anyone yet someone has to do it.

  44. The Scrap Citadel sat in the center of a dozen miles of desecrated wasteland, overrun with bandits, monstrosities, abominations, and everything else that Dusk had created in his years of experimentation for his lord Hellbent. Between it's rusty palisades rose mountains of scrap metal, carved into homes and dens for thousands of souls, may they be wicked or innocents who simply cannot find their way out. Ruled by Dusk Indrajit with an iron fist, it serves as the capital of the Hellbent cult. The Tattered One heads his church inside the city, as one of the only two clean and well furnished buildings in inside the Citadel's borders, the other of which is the Citadel Tower, where Dusk and his inner circle live, surrounded by dozens of the most powerful and skilled of his soldiers. Crime and robbery does not disturb Dusk and his followers, only slavery and the killing of the faithful draw attention from brutal security force led by Silva and her Chaos Marines. A deep system of underground tunnels and catacombs goes miles below the Citadel and miles outward from it. From the top of his tower, Dusk plots to destroy TUBA for the deaths of his family, in the most brutal way possible. Despite his steel grip on the city, there are still those who fight against him, may they be Precursors keeping his chaos inside its borders, or simply the rebellion made up of those that either hate Dusk and Hellbent, or those who have decided to fight in this hotspot of injustice and cruelty.
