  3. The Dakhor Monks have dedicated quite some time into research of the specific patterns embedded in their bones for magical effect. In fact, they have perhaps the greatest knowledge of Sel's magic systems and their peculiar relationship with geometry. As such, many monks have looked into other magical effects of geometry and, as a by-product, perfected the art of gardening. When a few of them did successfully worldhop and end up in the Rosharan sub-astral, they were quite welcome among many spren societies. Wyndle was in fact a fast friend with one particular Dakhor Monk and will eventually reminiscince of the beautiful gardens they may have been able to grow together. Baon and Renarin Kholin

  4. LG65: Term 5 Month 2 - You Can’t Stop the Beets Sloan was feeling a high she’d rarely felt before. She’d killed two students in as many months. Would her good luck streak hold? The anticipation was becoming too much. It took over her dancing, to the point where people looked at her strangely. Or more strangely than usual. She was used to the sideeyes people would give her as she passed them, her feet moving to a beat they couldn’t hear. It barely bothered her at all anymore. But this was growing….flamboyant. Yet, she couldn’t help it. Her joy could not be contained. What was that smell? And where was it coming from? She whiffed the air and grimaced. It was a decidedly unpleasant stench, yet not the stench of body odor or rotting food. No, this was almost perfume-like. It smelled intentional. Who would make this smell intentionally? She walked up an alley, and stopped short as she saw a bright green candle burning on the cobblestones of the alley floor. A girl sat beside it, warming her hands over the flame and…. ….Merciful Tehlu, was she smelling it? People sometimes doubted Sloan’s grasp of reality, but in Sloan’s opinion, she was a prime example of sanity when compared to this girl. The girl heard her and turned. “Oh, do you like my beet candle?” Beet candle? “Not exactly,” Sloan replied. “You don’t have to love the smell. It grows on you! And they really have quite amazing medicinal benefits! I would hazard a guess that they would even almost beat the University’s Medica! Isn’t that incredible? The Physicking department is one-of-a-kind, but if I do one thing in my lifetime, it will be getting the Master Physicker to accept my candles as a proper remedy.” Despite the overpowering aroma of beets surrounding her, Sloan smiled. “So you’re a student there, are you?” “Oh, yes. It can be a little expensive, but even a Ruh like myself can’t help but want to brighten the world with knowledge. Don’t you agree?” Sloan studied the girl a little harder - she would’ve gotten closer but she wasn’t getting within ten feet of that candle. Sure enough, the girl was unmistakably a Ruh. It was so obvious, Sloan was surprised she’d not noticed earlier. Had to be the candle’s fault. “Where’s your troupe?” “They’re still traveling around. I’ll rejoin them when I finish my studies.” Right. The University. Sloan focused on that. It didn’t matter if the girl was Ruh. She’d betrayed her kind by coming into this nest of vipers. That much was obvious by these grotesque candles. Sloan slipped her hands into her pockets, and found her throwing knives. Two of them slid from their sheathes as the girl mentioned missing her family. Perhaps you shouldn’t have left them, Sloan thought, as she threw one, two into her chest. The girl never saw the knives coming. Her leg spasmed out in shock and she knocked the candle over. It rolled toward Sloan, who backed up hastily. It stopped in the middle of the alley and Sloan stared at it, making sure it was still. Then she looked up at the body of the girl and her own knives sticking out of her chest. She couldn’t go back and get them. She’d have to go past that candle. Not even her music would help her through that endeavor, she was sure. Sacrifices. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for the greater good. Traelynn Weeks (Kynedath) was murdered! She was a Student! Maern (Xino) died to his wounds! He was a Student! Straw Altiora (Straw) has gone insane! Knighter Nune (Rover) went on the Horns and was charged with Conduct Unbecoming a Member of the Arcanum. He was expelled! These students were elevated: Athdara (Elandera), Arael Solon (Araris), Knighter Nune (Rover). Leo (Lopen) and Lasko Veitch (Karnage) are now Masters! Term 5 Month 2 has begun! This turn will end May 19th at 4 PM PDT. Get your lodging orders in (unless you want to face the wrath of Sloan, which I personally wouldn't recommend). The formula removing Master DP if EP was filed in that field was not working properly. We have fixed it and the following changes have occurred: Rath was not expelled. He was instead charged with Conduct Unbecoming, and received lashes. The effect of these lashes will end one turn early (this turn) to make up for the fact that we incorrectly expelled him and therefore he has not been able to file EP for the last two turns. Fura was charged with Reckless Use of Sympathy last turn, rather than Conduct Unbecoming.

  5. On it's own Allomantic Duralumin and Aluminum have no obvious uses, but I think that with other magic systems they could have some use. Duralumin according to this WOB already works with Stormlight I think that Duralumin and by extension Aluminum work with all magic systems. Duralumin gives you a major burst in power of that magic systems' investiture while Aluminum wipes that magic systems' investiture. If this is true then Duralumin has an interesting interaction with Feruchemy in that you might be able to compound with any metal using this or at least gain a brief time of extra strength. Aluminum on the other hand could be used to wipe any bad investiture from you. If there is a way to place some harmful investiture in some one (think a curse or something) you might be able to burn aluminum to remove that investiture.

  7. The man in the white robe grabbed at the aluminum gloves on the ground. These gloves were important. He didn’t know why, but they were important. He looked at the other gloves. There had been a boy. What was the boy’s name? The man in the white robe tried to think back. The boy, his name was… what was it? What was the name? He couldn’t remember. He looked around at the fruit trees. There was a sword hanging from a tree, a big, black blade in an aluminum sheath. This sword was special to him, he could feel it. He almost felt like it should talk to him. That was crazy though, and the man in the white robe wasn’t crazy. He knew he wasn’t. Insanity was being unable to function, having your mind deceive you. The man in the white robe knew his mind wasn’t tricking him. It was this world - something was wrong with the world. He couldn’t quite remember what the world had been like, but something was wrong. He looked in the sword. His eyes were gray and his hair was grey and his hands were gray, but his robe was white. Yes, very white, except where it wasn’t. The light didn’t like his robe, he knew that. The man in the white robe stood, and slung the sheath of the sword over his shoulder. The boy, he had been important, hadn’t he? He tried not to panic as he struggled again for his memory. Remember. The word reverberated through him, like a divine command. He fought the fog that seemed to cloud his memory. He couldn’t remember. All he knew was darkness. The gloves, they were important. As if by instinct, he put out his hand. The darkness liked him, wanted him to go on. He could feel it. Or was it his own mind, telling him to go on? Where was on? Was he in off right now? No, no, that was a diversion. It wasn’t important. He knew the darkness, and the darkness wouldn’t lie to him, would it? No, the darkness didn’t lie. The darkness would scream and reach for his soul, but it wouldn’t lie to him. The light, that was the lie. He could feel it. The light was full of liars. You couldn’t lie about what you couldn’t see. An Alleyway opened from the forest, opened into a whirl of darkness. The man in the white robe stepped into the darkness. The man in the white robe walked for minutes and minutes and seconds and seconds and hours and minutes until he came to the end of the darkness. There were walls on both sides of him, and darkness above him, and lights and explosions in the sky. And people. Was one of them the boy? Maybe they would know the boy. The man in the white robe grabbed one. This one looked like a coin, with a shiny side. “Have you seen the boy?” he asked. “I think the boy is my friend. He is important. Do you know him?” The person shoved him away, looking a little frightened. The man in the white robe stumbled into another person. This person had blond hair, and a mask with a silver eyepatch. “I am looking for the boy. Do you know him? You are not the person you look like. He has black hair, and his eye is the other side. That’s okay, though. I think he scares people like the boy. Do you know the boy?” The new person sucked in light. He looked nervous. The man in the white robe watched the light. The light was lying to the person. He grabbed it with his hands and watched the darkness eat the light. Now the person would be safe from the light. “You’re welcome. All the lights are liars, you know. They whisper like scratches in metal and like sparks in the sky. I don’t think the light likes me, though. Maybe the light likes the boy. Maybe that is why I don’t know where the boy is.” The man in the white robe could feel the darkness. It liked eating the light. Maybe if he ate all of the light, he could see where the boy was. Darkness wrapped around the person with the wrong eyeball and the bright hair. Then it wrapped around the man in the white robe. This darkness didn’t eat the light though. It just hid the light from getting inside his eyeballs. If the light got in his eyeballs, he would be in trouble probably. The darkness was soft and warm and it made him sleepy. The man in the white robe fell asleep in the darkness. ________________________________________________ Ned stepped forward quickly as the crazy guy fainted. His weirdly grey eyes rolled back into his head. Amisim grabbed the guy’s other arm and helped Ned prop him up against a lamp post. Amisim wiped his forehead, the gold paint there getting distorted by the motion. “Dude, this guy must have had way too many drinks tonight.” Ned shook his head. “I tried to use Regrowth on him, but it didn’t take. If he was just drunk, it should’ve burned all the alcohol right out of him.” Amisim shrugged. “Not my problem, man." He looked at Ned, the groaned when he saw the concern in Ned's eyes. "Come, on, let’s just stick him on the side of the street. He’ll be fine, he’ll wake up tomorrow with a killer hangover, and go on with his year. Nothing to worry about.” Ned looked back down at the man, passed out and slumping to the ground. “I don’t know, ‘Mis. You head on to the party, I’ll make sure he gets to the hospital and catch up.” Amisim shook his head in disappointment. “You and your tender heart. You know, not every crazy idiot in this city is worth spending time on. You gotta pick your battles. I’ll save you a piece of Marie’s pie if you get there before eight. One minute late, and you’ll have to get your own pie.” Ned’s stomach grumbled. Marie made the absolute best chocolate pie. He nodded. “Deal.” He pulled out his mobile and called an emergency service as Amisim started walking toward the east side of town. “Yeah, I got somebody who seems kinda sick. He just passed out, and he seemed like he might have had a blow to the head before then. He kept asking about somebody, but he wasn’t really lucid. Okay. I am on the corner of 5th and Hammond. Thanks!” He closed his mobile and waited for the hospital staff to arrive. He checked his watch. Hopefully they aren’t running behind tonight. Amisim better not eat that pie early.

  8. Welcome to the Shard! We already know that A-Aluminum can theoretically cleanse the spiritweb of unwanted Investiture and A-Aluminum would be more effective than F-Gold in reversing the effect of Shade withering. It could probably be used defensively to counter certain forms of magic like Lashings, which affect one's Spiritual bond to the planet. Depending on what you're thinking of by 'harmful Investiture' that may be possible (see the Shade thing) but permanent changes to the Spiritweb such as Savantism or the Nightwatcher's boon/curse would presumably resist A-Aluminum the same way they do F-Gold or other healing magics. As far as the magic is concerned, that's now your 'natural' state so there's nothing to cleanse/heal. Hemalurgy's another example where we know this wouldn't work, it may be a short-circuit of sorts and not truly a permanent part of your spiritweb but it's still seen as part of it so long as the spike is in, so A-Aluminum won't affect it.

  11. Your body does not contain elementary iron. It contains some iron salts and many complexes of iron. (Incidentally it contains a whole load of zinc, too) Alloys are different from the base metal. Yet the right duralmunium contains just 4% copper. The iron atoms in your blood are a lot more different to raw iron than steel is. All indications are that metals to burn must be in their elementary form.

  12. I think that the fourth ideal is about realizing that we aren't infallible, that we can make mistakes. For Szeth and the Skybreakers, that means following someone. For the Windrunners, I think that it's an acknowledgement that "I can't save everyone but I'll persist nonetheless". What do you think?

  13. "I'll be fine." Laurelai said with an exasperated sigh. "You don't have to keep worrying over me like I'm a kid." "I know, I know." Her father replied with a sad little smile. "You can take care of yourself, I was just reminding you to be careful. A young woman walking down the streets by herself gets attention." Laurelai rolled her eyes and straightened up his mask. He hadn't wanted to wear one at all but had finally relented when Laurelai insisted that she wouldn't meet with someone at the festival if they couldn't at least commit to the theme. He'd managed to find a mask of The Scholar, barely looking any different than he usually did with his labcoat still on in the place of the cloaks that many others wore. "I've been walking through streets on my own for a decade now." She reminded him. "How many times have you been a young woman walking down the streets by yourself?" "Okay" He said, giving a wry chuckle. "Point taken." He put his arms around her and squeezed her tightly before finally letting go. "What about you?" Laurelai asked, happy that she'd managed to get one up over him. "Are you heading home? Back to work?" There was an undertone of disapproval in her voice at that, she firmly believed that her father worked too much and that a little time out at the festival might be good for him. He might even manage to meet someone interesting. She didn't want to think about that too much, but surely he deserved to be happy and he hadn't so much as gone on a date since her mother had passed away. "No I'll be heading to the clinc." He said with a knowing look. "An hour on the streets has been as much as I can handle, but it is still a holiday so the other crazy recluse's and I can all share a nice time together while the rest of the city tears the streets up or whatever you do these days." Laurelai mock rolled her eyes again but gave him a smile so he'd know she didn't really mean it. Then she gave him another hug before turning and making her way back into the crowd, slipping the mask of the Assassin back down and grinning broadly. It had been nice to catch up with family for a little while, but her father never wanted to do anything fun during the festival. He might humor her and tag along but she could feel his discomfort. Now she was alone and free, free to wander and watch, to explore the bustling streets and watch the Storytellers on the corners. She took a quick look at herself in the reflection of a shop window. The elaborate black mask concealed her upper face, but the patterned lace framed her cheekbones and led the eye to her elaborately styled tresses, Forged black for the occasion. She'd spent hours braiding the sides and then pinning them back to keep the rest of her hair pulled out of her face and quite enjoyed the effect. It worked well with the deep crimson dress she'd managed to get from her favorite Arelish seamstress. Giving herself a satisfied nod, Laurelai began to weave her way through the crowds that filled the streets. Her keen eyes focused on one event after another, watching the small dramas, romances and comedies that unfolded across the giant stage of the city.

  15. Here's Aylitha's character sheet. Please keep in mind that she won't be a character in the traditional sense, and won't get involved in plots, instead she'll hunt those who regain memories of the old world and reset them again, making her more of a special NPC. As an aside, because of her personality, as well as safety concerns and keeping things hidden the creatures she'll send after people will be lower-powered and have various (hidden) weaknesses that can be used to either escape or defeat them, in which case characters will have a small amount of respite, which you can use if you don't want your character captured. Otherwise, if they do get captured they'll only get their memories erased, and after the procedure won't even have any injuries, so your characters won't be harmed. With that out of the way, here's the sheet (as well as the sheets for some of the creatures). Aylitha: Creatures: Hazel Blackmore: Karin Dreier (Eldritch): Hazel and Karin are meant specifically as assistants of Aylitha, and won't interfere in plots, though they might observe things, and will only interfere if someone is acting because they're remembering the old world, as well as running damage control for Aylitha's retrieval teams, though if anyone does specifically want to interact with them, they can. Also, yeah, their outfits are references to the Men in Black, and Karin specifically designed them like this IC, though it has more practical reasons as well.

  19. A year had passed already. Incredibly fast, yet sluggishly slow. He had memories of willing time to go faster, and of being horrified at the passage of time. But that time was gone now. Now he could be outside and enjoy the night. No one in the whole city would mark on him, or his strange-looking mask. More of a helmet than a mask. This 'mask' did well to hide everything about him, his facial expressions, his face, and his... eyesight problems. It even remedied the last one. That is why he could enjoy this night. He looked at the beautiful patterns of people. So chaotic yet orderly. for the first time in months, he could see them without feeling his head trying to turn on itself, what he saw incongruous with what his body and his logic told him. Soon he would make a name for himself and hopefully train himself to ignore his reversed sight. Soon, later. Now enjoy.

  20. In Kaza’s interlude she describes the process of soul casting as “picking at [the stone’s] memories,” and notes: “She nearly gave in herself. How wonderful would it be to no longer fear? To soar into infinity on the air?” (Oathbringer Hardcover Page 561). To me this indicates that for some reason the fabrial machine, while directed by her mind, is also acting upon her spirit. Her will for the stone to change in the passage is also noted to be reinforced by another: “commanding and powerful, attracted by her request for aid.” Shallan does not note any reinforcing will like this either of the times she soulcasts, which makes me think that it is this introduction of a third party, controlled in a relatively crude manner, that makes the use of a soulcaster fabrial machine have this effect on a person.

  21. The name “Ghostblood” is actually a reference to Hemalurgy, killing someone—the ghost—and spiking the power out of their body—the blood. Kelsier took some inspiration from Vin’s earring and the death of her little sister. Yes, it’s true, Kelsier founded the Ghostbloods. Ishar and the Pits of Hathsin.

  23. So, I was watching a Youtube video about TWOK where spanish streamer Alexelcapo points out to the chapter 57 epigraph, which is this Death Rattle: "I hold the suckling child in my hands, a knife at his throat, and know that all who live wish me to let the blade slip. Spill its blood upon the ground, over my hands, and with it gain us further breath to draw." He then says the 'breath' could be refering to BioChromatic Breath. If this is right, then the POV character of the Rattle is about to kill a newborn to get their Breath. But there are some inconsistencies. We know that normally one can't steal Breath, nor even give it by accident, it has to be given with intent (Intent?), which is something a baby can't do. So, is it possible that the knife in the Rattle is to be used as a hemalurgic spike? The 'let the blade slip' part could mean 'pierce' instead of 'cut their throat'. What I imagine is a scenario in which a group is in dire need of magic to survive something that has already killed many, but their only source of Investidure is the Breath of a newborn who, unable to talk, is unable to use it. So the leader of the group faces the desicion of whether or not to take away their Breath through hemalurgy to save the rest.

  25. True. So this would leave the mechanics as they currently stand at: A Sleepless with a flying eye and the ability to sense people, artifabrian and Investiture scholar, with a compact crossbow modified less for sheer damage and more for truer aim, the intent is less to kill and more to put someone out of chasing or attacking him. Them? That's probably just a matter of preference... Now to chew on weaknesses and backstory. Building a character this way around is interesting for me, generally I do them backstory first, and have no idea what they're called until the end. I've also never modified a character between systems, it is surprisingly fun. Should exercise my rusty squeaky brain more.

  29. I am now going to propose my theory for Calvin's home state, even pointing to the area where the strip is located. Here me out if you want, otherwise there is a tl;dr at the bottom. (Not like this is heavily debated subject, I just have always wondered) So, to begin: A few pinpoints we have to address: It won't be somewhere desert-y, like Arizona, because it snows plenty and one of Calvin's favorite activities is to run around in the woods. The obvious candidate- that I came up with, at least- is Ohio, where Bill Watterson grew up. Hopefully I don't need to explain who that is. The reason for this? So, there is that. Also, in a strip where Calvin and Hobbes blast off into outer space in their wagon, they are determining where they live. Picture an atlas of the United States. Where would the 'E' be? About where Ohio is, on the east coast but close enough to the middle of the country not to be the 'S' at the end. So now we have a state. Ohio has plenty of woodland area and gets snow each winter, so that checks off another box. But where in Ohio? Take notice of the last panel of this comic: Calvin's home is apparently an hour and a half from... the ocean? Ohio isn't next to an ocean! But it does border Lake Erie. A lake large enough to look like an ocean when drawn in a comic strip. There are multiple towns in Ohio an hour and a half from Lake Erie. I don't see enough info in just the comics (at least that I'm remembering) to pinpoint where exactly in Ohio his hometown is, but I do know it is not Bill Watterson's hometown which lies only 30 minutes away from the lake border. The possibilities include Carrollton, Strasburg, and a bunch of other places I don't need to mention. The only other obvious landmark for Calvin's home location is their summer vacation camping trip. The constants across the board are the big cities being driven through and the trip taking 8 hours, and being in a different state. There are several National forests around 8 hours from the location of his home (Carrollton/Strasburg/other Ohio) such as Nantahala and Uwharrie National Forests in North Carolina. Any of these is a viable candidate. If anyone else wants to dig deeper into this, they can, but I think this sufficiently satisfies my wonderings. TL;DR as promised: Calvin lives around the center of Ohio, goes to Lake Erie for his beach comics, and goes to a North Carolina National forest for his summer camping trip comics.

  30. @Elbereth@little wilson, Can we have an official vote count? Here are my current reads. I'm borrowing your list so I can see who is still at the school. Araris - Slight Village - Got us moved on to fighting elims instead of each other. Elandera - Neutral - Really started being a part of the game over the last two cycles when my activity started to wane. I need to go back and reread her posts. GreenRover - Slight Elim - Hasn't been around a lot and has the money to cause problems. Karnage - Neutral - I'm not sure which side of the debate between him and Fura I am on. It could be that they are both village, but I don't think they are both elims. I wouldn't mind expelling them just in case. The Mighty Lopen - Neutral - As I understand it, the evidence against him is he didn't vote to lynch Bard or Hael? I haven't followed the suspicions on Lopen as well as I should have, so I am not suspicious.... yet. Devotary of Sponteneity -Slight Elim - Sadly he always feels slightly elim to me in every game we play... and I think he actually has been an eliminator in the other games we've played. So maybe he's an elim now? Experience - Slight Elim - Our track record for people who have become masters is not great. Unfortunately, it'll take a namer or an assasin to get rid of you now. Straw - Slight village - My gut says you're bad, but I can't reconcile that with how helpful you are trying to be to the village. You may have fooled me, but I'm taking that chance for now. Burnt Spaghetti - Neutral - I'm still wary of you postponing sharing your elevations with the village given the elims already had them. There was also a post from Hael that set me off a little. That said, I don't know why elim!Burnt would admit she had shared her elevations with an elim, so I'll upgrade you from slight elim to neutral. Furamirionind - Neutral - I don't know how to read Fura. It sounds like he has a playstyle very similar to mine which involves a lot of deception with a little chaos sprinkled in. Most of you who have played with him before sound like you see this is normal Fura, which doesn't help get a bead on alignment. Kynedath - Slightly elim - He's been just active enough not to die on the streets. I'm not sure I believe he will die on the streets, but I also don't want to have him be the lynch target for the next four lynches in a row to be sure he isn't a skindancer. I think a namer or assassin might be the best way to remove him from the school. Elkanah - Village - Hasn't been as active in the last couple cycles, but I accidentally saw his GM PM and he is definitely Village. Interesting question... is that a lie? I'm going to wait for an official vote tally to place a vote.

  31. I can't believe that worked. Honestly, I felt super guilty about the bus. I misunderstood the rules, and thought there was a 50/50 chance that Rae would still be lynched in case of a tie, and I knew I would be busted if that happened. I didn't expect to become trusted by the entire village. Somehow, I'm more trusted as an elim than I am as a villager. Also, I didn't like the Silver Powder providing blanket immunity to the shade roleblock. I should have brought this up to the rules committee, but it would have been better if it was used up after preventing a roleblock. However, looking over the master spreadsheet, no shades managed to vote on elims, so that was a moot point.

  34. Kelsier was never one to follow the law. In fact, he’s kinda the opposite of the law. The first thing he did when he managed to worldhop to Roshar was break a whole bunch of laws, start another rebellion against all forms of nobles, etc. The Skybreakers, of course took notice of this, and Nale himself came to put a stop to Kelsier. Kelsier, however, was Kelsier, so he punched Nale in the face and continued to break laws. He is now the Skybreaker’s sworn enemy. Dakhor Monks and Wyndle

  35. The girl who looked up is actually a story about Edgli's Tears, the flowers that are commonly found in Hallandren are the light that was hidden behind the wall. When the girl brought seeds of the flowers to the rest of the world, they began to grow the flowers as well, and because of that they could use breath much more effectively. This was one of the main causes of the manywar. Endowment helped the girl escape from Hallandren because she wanted to endow the ability to effectively use breath to the rest of Nalthis, and she didn't like that the power was kept by only one nation. This story was later brought to Roshar by worldhoppers from Nalthis, and the story then evolved over hundreds of years to become what Shallan heard, because the Rosharians did not understand breath and what the flowers were, only that they were good, and that they caused a war. 36. That is a dark and deep dive into what I always thought was a cryptic, though simple, death rattle. I can't imaging a situation where one breath would make such a big difference, but interesting idea, certainly.

  38. “Excuse me, fellow TUBAists, this matter requires my attention.” Kingston nodded to the group he’d conversed with, thanking them for their assistance. His eyes lingered on NullBlade the longest, taking in his appearance. He seemed arrogant enough to be important, which made him worth name-dropping, or impersonating with the Disguiser’s Lens he wore. “I’m afraid you won’t find any people around here, Miss!” He turned and dumped a pile of six swords of varying sizes into Cassie’s hands. When he did, the faded white letters on the back of his jacket came into the others' view: L.I.A.R. Kingston grabbed the unfortunate woman by the elbow, aiming to drag her across the street. “I have the permit to sell at this spot, but you’re welcome to share it with me. Everyone’s in such a trusting mood, with all these masks on. It’s easy to make a quick coin, let me show you.” He scanned the crowd. It was a vendor’s nightmare. Under all the masks and costume jewelry, he couldn’t tell the rich from the poor. Of course, the genuinely wealthy would balk at buying metals from a stranger. And the poor wouldn’t have the money to spare. That left the middle-class, who at this time at night would only be interested in food, drinks, and cheap novelties. “Swords, ten chrysts!” he bellowed. “Or by special arrangement between Newcago Steel Co. and myself, the humble Kingston Smedry, free with he purchase of a metal flake gift bottle from… I’m sorry lass, I appear to have forgotten your name.” He stuck out a hand for her to shake, eyes twinkling. He probably wouldn’t make much money helping an amateur panhandler, but he was in the market for something more valuable: friendship.

Nightblood talks about all the evil he wants to destroy, and how nobody seems to appreciate him destroying evil so well. Lift's fork talks about all the food that she has helped Lift consume. They get along surprisingly well. Harmony and the hog.

  47. Really? In 1997 it felt pretty new and fantastic! We got the first book from the library when it was brand new, my Mum read it and then gave it to me and said I had to read it. We were both reading a lot of YA/children's at the time, and it WAS very different to the other things that were available then. Part of its charm was the almost naive humour with things like the school song and Dumbledore saying a few words: "Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!". We saw a newspaper story saying a second book would be published soon, and I'm not sure what was more exciting - to see that a sequel was coming for a book I really enjoyed, or to see that the newspaper was even bothering itself with writing about a book for children. Before Harry Potter, children's fiction was paid almost no attention at all. The popular books were mostly ghostwritten formulaic series (Sweet Valley High and Babysitter's Club were popular at my school ... I tried to read some and they were BAD). Harry Potter brought some originality to the genre, and I suppose it showed publishers that they could loosen up and publish some more diverse stuff. Yup, the magic system didn't really make a lot of sense, but that didn't matter because they were very entertaining reads.

  49. Let's think a little sideways: What if it's not an anagram? It could be an acronym - eleven letters, but eleven isn't particularly significant in the Cosmere. The only example that comes to mind is the 11th metal that was brought up early in the Mistborn Trilogy. How many worlds are there in the Cosmere? It could also be a cipher? Are there any simple codes that come up in Sanderson's other works? The problem I've found is the lack of vowels. By reversing the positions of the letters in the alphabet (A becomes Z, etc) I got: BINORTTTUWZ which could transfer to TOR WINZ BUTT but I don't think that's the secret. Personally, I'm leaning toward the only significance here being that it hid some wordplay with balderdash, but I haven't used my brain in a while, so let's exhaust this!
