Ykyasfw you can tell which books have been in your backpack because of the creasemarks when you do your SA reread to early and have to reread everything else to make up the time until RoW when you start explaining to the intricacies of the Cosmere to your dog who just wants to play fetch, and then you concede by explaining it to him while you play fetch

  3. There is more in here that's weird. Truthwatchers are the order whose symbol looks like grass. Renarin sees. His Order has the color green, associated with Emeralds, soulcasting essence Pulp and Body focus hair. Interesting then, that Cultivationspren (the spren that make Edgedancers) are green and have hair made of vines. In the Physical, Cultivationspren look like growing vines. SImilarly, Edgedancers are White (Diamonds), have the Soulcasting Essence Crystal and Body Focus of eyes. Yet, it's the Truthwatchers, whose spren manifests as a ray of light shining through glass and falling on a surface. Now, Edgedancerspren, in the physical, do have crystal in the vines of their spren, and for Truthwatcherspren, when they stop, the light slowly emates from them and amkes the shape of growing plants and leaves. Still, interesting, no?

  4. Gavilar was on the Bondsmith path, and he was actively working to bring about a desolation. Sure, it was for what he thought were good reasons, but one of those reasons was essentially a Vorin theocracy. I'd say actively causing a disaster that kills 90% of the population disqualifies you from being a 'good leader'.

  7. There is no evidence for a correlation between how invested Nightblood is and how powerful he is. Nightblood seems to be exactly as strong as he was in Warbreaker. People like to overinflate Nightblood's power and make him out to be some Universe ending super diety. The truth is that he couldn't kill two Radiants while they were in Honor's perpendicularity without getting drunk. The idea that he is somehow going to jump to 1000x power and eat a perpendicularity is silly IMO. If you just leave him in one unsheathed for a few year maybe it will collapse, but unless Brandon writes something to the contrary into the stories, he isn't strong enough to do it in a reasonable amount of time.

  8. Okay I wanna take a second to talk about Moash. I know a lot of people hate him but I think that the story would be less without him. He just adds so much to the story, and too be honest I really hope he doesn't have have a come back arch. Well written villains are the best characters in my opinion. What makes villains scary are when they are relatable- and moash is. Hes what Kaladin would have become without syl, and that makes him terrifying. I think he would be an incredible side villain. Better then Amaram, because everyone hates Amaram, but Moash used to be bridge four and we know why he's bad, which makes him all the better to be a villain. But think about a big fight (Physical) between kaladin and Moash- It would be so amazing. Their dialogue in the fight would be so powerful. They reluctantly start to fight, kaladins fighting to protect Urithiru, and Moash is fighting at odiums command, but neither want to fight each other. Moash is trying to explain himself- not excuse himself because he knew it was wrong, just explain. But kaladin relates so hard to Moash and that what makes it so hard to fight him. Moash is trying hard to beat Kaladin, to prove to himself that he is better than kaladin, and that kaladin is wrong to protect those he hates. During the course of the fight, Moash starts to shift from explaining himself, to anger at kaladin because he knows Kaladin is right. And then Moash starts to beg Kaladin for forgiveness, because he wants to be part of bridge four again. As the fight comes to an end, Kaladin realizes whats really going on with moash. He pins moash down with syl, holding the spearhead to Moash's neck. Then kaladin says: "Moash, I forgive you. I. forgive. you." Then he walks away. He flies back to Urithiru. Moash stays there, sitting at the sight of his defeat, broken. Kaladin forgave him. The problem with Moash is he cant forgive himself. He knows what he did was wrong, but he wont go back to bridge four because he hasn't made peace with himself. He continues to fight with odium, but now he knows that he could leave, and go back to kaladin, but he doesnt. And that what makes him a powerful villain, because he wants so badly to be back with his brothers in bridge four but he wont go because he doesnt feel like he deserves it. I dont know, I find him to be one of the most interesting characters in the stormlight archive.

  21. I'm with you. Nightblood is the favorite of people who really love the theoretical mechanics of the Cosmere which go far beyond what has been shared in any book or officially published material. Sanderson has provided a lot of information on the theoretical upper limits of the power of Nightblood which makes these people really excited. Nothing wrong with this, people can like whatever they want to like. If it's fun to think about those possible mechanics for you by all means do, it's just not my thing. But like you said, in actual appearances on page Nightblood can't actually achieve his theoretical upper power limits. And think of how lame that would be if it did happen. Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Adolin, Jasnah, your efforts and struggle against Odium were all irrelevant in the end. Just bring in a superpowered semi-sentient sword from another planet and he'll wipe out Odium in one hit! I highly doubt that Sanderson will write it that way. Nightblood will probably play a part, but it'll remain limited. In my view, the less Nightblood the better. My personal expectation is that Szeth will decide the drawbacks of using Nightblood are too great vs. his regular shardblade. He'll keep Nightblood in a safe place to keep him from falling into the wrong hands but not use him in normal combat. He may pull him out once or twice in a moment of dire need, but won't use him continually.

  24. Yes, and we have seen thousands of them die so far in the books. Unless you're implying that Adolin will die off page and in a completely irrelevant way, I fail to see how this is to the point. I'm not sure what this means because of how it's worded, but I think you mean that the Fused could not overcome Shardplate? This is obviously wrong, as the regular Parshendi were able to overcome Shardplate. If instead you mean that Someone in Shardplate could kill the Fused, I would point to the ones that can regrow their carapace as weapons. Kal hit one of them several times with Syl and they just kept regrowing their limbs. They also hit Kal several times with blows that would kill a normal person, and damage the plate of a Shardbearer. Sure, if we want to give Adolin the superpower that he literally can't be hit, that works out just fine. I don't know what you are implying here. You asked why the Heralds used suicide soldiers, I gave a real world example of why. I think Stalin probably cared a lot. Not because the conscripts died, but because they were very ineffective. I'm sure he would much rather have had fully armed soldiers to repel the invaders. He was also a first oath Radiant without a Blade. If he had Syl, he could have beaten all four by himself. Once he gets plate it would be even more onesided. I would be surprised if any number of non-Radiant Shardbearers could kill him. I also want to say that I don't want to derail the thread any further, so I will try not to respond to any further posts. As my last statement I will just say that the only way a non Radiant can stay relevant in combat going forward is if they have Batman's superpower. That is to say, they are to important to the plot to die.

  25. Sure, he would be great for fighting meaningless battles against other non powered individuals. Against enemies with access to Surges he would be killed. Look at the battle of Thaylen. If Kal didn't have access to Stormlight he would have died at several points during the battle. Adolin even recognizes how useless he is during the battle when he gives his Shardblade to someone else because they have plate on. Now you could argue that a Shardbearer is a big help even against a Thunderclast, except that it would have smashed and kill that guy if it hadn't been focused on an unkillable Renarin. Without Stormlight healing any combatant is automatically relegated to second class fighter. Kaladin went 2v1 against Shardbearers unarmed and won. If you aren't a Radiant, you don't really matter. edit: I also want to add that even if Adolin starts swearing oaths, he is still way behind in terms of progression, so he would still be a background character.

  32. Gred did not like owning an inn. The Waystop Inn was in the outskirts of Gredlow, so not many people visited. Just the occasional trapper or Adventurer. Gred was minding his own business, cleaning some jugs with a rag, when the door to his inn banged open. His inn had a tavern on the bottom for anyone who wanted to have some beer. The tavern went silent, and the man in the doorway strode forward. He was ragged and his clothing was ripped up. "They are coming. It is too late. I couldn't stop them." Then the man fell unconscious.

  35. I was not as into this chapter as I thought I would be. However, I liked it much better than the previous version. As a whole, The S/I/E narrative feels more streamlined and decisive. I liked watching S fight and control the anxiety. That I could relate to. Most of the food descriptions were great, except for maybe the one about the lactose sauce that @kais mentioned. That one did not sound appealing. The little touchy and flirty moments were great, and I want more of them. I had a hard time focusing on the chapter because I was getting swallowed up in the scale of the party, but those little moments grounded me and reengaged me when my mind started to wander. I had the same reaction. If they had just portaled out without telling anyone, it would've seemed like they just disappeared, and even if WW or the others figured it out, it would still be kind of rude to just disappear without saying bye to the host. Agree.

  36. This more or less sums up much of what I was going to write. I knew "J" was an Ari, but I couldn't tell how many of the others were actually who they appeared to be and how many were Ari. I had a hard time following who was saying what and who agreed with who. This isn't a proper writing term or anything, but in my head I have this labeled as a "talking heads" chapter because it's really just people standing around talking delivering information. Sometimes, a chapter that is mostly dialogue is okay and even compelling if there is enough tension and emotion, but for a good portion of this, I wasn't feeling the tension because Re was a very passive observer. It got better when R finally started talking himself, and when he started doing his own scheming. But that was page 13. It was really the last three pages where I started to engage with the chapter and feel the tension. On a more positive note, you did a great job with the description of the setting in this chapter. It was very grounded in Re's voice. I especially liked his reaction to the naked statue. The last few lines were fantastic in a beautiful, heartbreaking way and make me feel more sympathetic to Re than I ever have felt before.

  37. This is a definite possibility, but I feel like Dalinar's arc in Oathbringer would lead him to reject Nightblood. He's realized that he's old and not the strongest anymore. Can we just see what happens when Szeth fights Nale in Book 4? Although, I suspect it won't be a satisfying conclusion. I think the fight would extend into book 5. Like either Nale's Honor Blade gets eaten or his spren blade and he successfully flees and regroups for another fight on a different day.

  38. If he doesn't become a Radiant, he will become irrelevant as a combatant. It could make for an interesting character journey, one that Brandon has explored a little bit in OB with the whole "I'm useless now" sentiment that he had on the Shadesmar trip, but I think I would rather see him in the fight. Reviving Maya and swearing an oath at a key moment would make for a killer scene IMO. Something similar to what Kaladin did at the end of WoR, or what Dalinar did at the end of OB. In my minds eye, I'm seeing a scene with Adolin and Shallan. Shallan is down and dying. No Stormlight around to save her. She asks Adolin to remember her. I imagine that he (along with just about everyone in their armies) has already sworn the first oath, but there isn't really anything that tells a person whether it has been accepted. Inside Adolin's head, he goes through all of the loved ones he has lost over the years (Mom, Sureblood and all of his soldiers at the tower). Adolin swears that he will remember her (internal monologue I will remember all of you), and Maya accepts it as his second oath (Edgedancer's second oath is about remembrance). Que dramatic Stormlight surge and Edgedancer healing. Curtains. edit: Just wanted to add Elhokar to the list of lost loved ones. Also, I'll raise the stakes for Adolin and say that Shallan is pregnant when all this goes down.

  39. I don't know what "epectations" are. That said, I expect fun things. Bad, bad, evil destroying fun things. What I hope for? Lift is given Nightblood for safekeeping while Szeth is in jail because... reasons. Maybe they just start a conversation about food or something. And, when she goes crazy with Nightblood battle fun time and they both get really hungry, is when Azure and Vasher reunite. BUT! That would likely ruin the chances of a Dalinar, Lift, Szeth adventure to Shin in the next book. So... I don't know what I want to happen? For context on that idea: I'm thinking Dalinar is the straight man of the trio, wondering how he got involved with the guy who wants to start a crusade and a politically-ignorant friend of the emperor. (No, this wasn't my idea. It's from Shardcast. But, I still want it...) Not very original I guess, judging from previous posts. And, sorry if this ended up being more about hopes for book five than book four... "Book Four" Is that the Windrunners' new bookstore?

(If frustration was a shard I would have ascended right there) no hard feelings but man I thought I had it. Edit Alright taking this WoB into account we run into some problems, but there are possible work arounds perhaps we had Cultivation take the power or spiritweb of the Shardaic child and tied it to Kaladin, or possibly this WoB could be unreliable, what was Brandon supposed to say if he said anything other than yes, that would immediately draw suspicion. Or I could be wrong altogether and the Kaladin thread of this theory would have to be cut.

  47. Hello Sharders! First time poster here, I found this forum back when WoR was published, lurked for a while, then fell away while waiting for OB. When OB was published, I immediately came back, to see what you all had to say. This thread has not disappointed in the slightest, I've been blown away by the analysis and discussion I've found on here. I've been in favor of Shalladin since the first time they met, but I admit I'd accepted that the triangle was over, and Shadolin was canon, upon completing the book. Welp, you guys have convinced me to rejoin the good ship Shalladin, so please forgive my lack of faith! @PhineasGage, that was an incredible essay, I really appreciated your in depth analysis, and look forward to seeing your OB update. One thing your section on Shadolin brought to mind was Sanderson's portrayal of love as a choice. A lot of Shadolin shippers have brought up this perspective of his, and believe it supports their ship. I believe that the scene of Shallan forcing the kiss after the Chasm, and, as @SLNC pointed out, forcing, or at least rushing the marriage, shows the flaw in this reasoning. Love may be a choice, but it has to be a choice towards someone. Even in the arranged marriages that are brought up so often, nobody chooses to go through with it to run away from someone else. And in the SA, we know Navani chose Gavinar because she was running from her feelings for Dalinar, and we saw how that turned out. Let's look at those "Shadolin" scenes again. In the post-chasm scene, Shallan has obviously just shared an incredibly romantic experience with Kaladin. But, as we've been reminded throughout WoR, she needs to be with Adolin, for a variety of practical and compelling reasons. So what does she do? She forces (Sanderson's word, not mine) a passionate kiss on him, clearly trying to increase her feelings for Adolin again. And, when he holds her, she uses the opportunity to minimize the importance of Kaladin holding her all night, saying that it felt "nice to be held," as if that was the only reason she'd enjoyed her night with him. And I believe the same thing is going on when she "chooses" Adolin at the end of OB. She's not choosing to love him, she's instead choosing to be the "Shallan" that is with Adolin. So long as her alts we're torn, she stayed in limbo, as soon as they agree on Kaladin, she makes a snap judgment away from him, and when Adolin tries to break up, she doesn't just convince him to stay together, but to get married! It's the same over compensation as the WoR scene, and again it seems to be a decision made for the purpose of convincing herself, rather than the result of an organic desire to be with Adolin. Anyway, that was my takeaway from this incredible thread so far, thanks so much you guys, keep up the great work!

  48. Hi all, its late here but I finally got the "essay" up if you want to read it Go here: http://www.evidencebased.info/?page_id=30 and use password: Shard Please be aware that I have only thrown this site up tonight so it is not formatted etc - and its just a wordpress site so I C+Ped in the text so the formatting isn't great but should be legible. There are no comments etc and no contact stuff is real - so please don't use it If you want to comment on it - either do so here (please tag me) or PM me directly. There are probably a few typos etc but the most important thing I'd love from you all is your feedback. Please let me know if you agree/disagree with my interpretations of each piece of evidence, or if you see something in WoR or tWoK that you think should be included. What I'll do is add additional points and post them up on the site as addenda in a few weeks. Please be aware this was written last year, long before we had any OB information (afaik) so don;t expect any of that in it. I am happy to discuss the essay in light of OB information (you'll notice I got some serious predictions wrong for example) but I'd rather leave the essay in the setting of being essentially Pre-OB. I'll do another analysis with OB stuff in it in the future and probably use this essay plus any feedback you give me to write it up. I have only put the password in to reduce traffic. The server I'm using is in the UK and it was running very slowly for me (in Cyprus) so I hope you don't have any trouble using it. If you think anyone else would be interested, feel free to send them the link and password. I will eventually get this site up and running as a proper blog type thing - you know actual pictures etc. Probably a mix of minecraft and Stormlight if I'm honest But if I change the site I'll make sure to keep that page up just in case. I'll also likely be interested in putting up anyone else's analysis in the future if anyone wants it posted. That will be some time off yet though so don't get excited! So just as a final thing, I'm not looking to fight about this. If you want to give me another interpretation of a piece of evidence I will happily include it in the addendum, but I'm not going to debate my conclusion because that was a "feelings" thing. I can't change how writing that essay made me feel at the time. I can change the way I interpret the evidence now and that may change my mind if enough is altered to change my perception of the story as a whole. I want more Adolin evidence in particular because I am worried I missed bits and that has biased my results. Anyway, hope you enjoy. PS I haven't read up the thread tonight (sorry) but I'll answer posts in the morning .
