  1. Hey everyone! So I, like many of you I'm sure, have been trying to successfully convert my wife to the Cosmere. Literally since I met her I've been trying to get her to read The Way of Kings but there never seemed to be a good time for her to jump into it - either she was reading something else, had too much work, or just couldn't commit to a 1000-page book whose series wasn't finished yet. However, we've recently figured out that she really enjoys being read aloud to - she likes the sound of my voice and it helps her relax after a long day (she's a high school English teacher dealing with teenage angst all day - please show her some sympathy here). So naturally, I finally sold her on tWoK and I've been reading it to her for the last few months, a bit at a time. At the moment, we're in part 2 and just read the scene where Dalinar experiences the first vision we see 'on-screen' where the Midnight Essence shows up and he fights it off with a fire poker. So here's another thing: my wife is absolutely hilarious and also has trouble remembering names (to be fair, Alethi names have a lot of -lin, -as, -nar suffixes), so I recently asked her to give me a breakdown of what she remembers each character as. Here's what she's got: Kaladin - Slaveboi - "He used to be soldierboi, now he's slaveboi, but I'm pretty sure by the end of all this he'll be shardboi" Shallan - Sneak - "She's so mean! She's just becoming friends with her to steal her magic jewellery. I don't like her." Dalinar - Jeffrey Dean Morgan - "He looks like JDM." Adolin - The Hot Brother - "He's kind of a slut right?" Renarin - The Awkward Brother Sylphrena - Manic Pixie Dream Girl Sadeas - B****boi - "He's the idiot with the bridges right? Yeah, he's a b****boi." Jasnah - Princess Jasmine - "She's a princess right? No? Yes - she's the daughter of Dead Kingy Boi." Gavilar - Dead Kingy Boi Szeth - The Michelin Man - "Because he's big and all in white!" "Tay, he's average size. Just his eyes are described as big." "Are you kidding me?" Elhokar - Boi King - "You're making sure to write these all as 'b-o-i', right?" Gaz - C***! - I know this board doesn't allow swearing - but she just straight-up shouted the c-word when I mentioned Gaz. The Stormfather - The Stormdaddy - "Make sure they know it's being said in an uncomfortably sexual way." Chasmfiends - Rock Lobsters Some early hot takes from Tay: - Dalinar killed Gavilar so that he could become king because he's in love with Gavilar's wife. - The shardbearer who Kaladin fights in the first chapter killed all of his men and enslaved Kaladin. - Sadeas is behind the cut saddle. - Kaladin and Syl are going to fall in love. - Kaladin is going to get a shardblade ("He's obviously going to get a shardblade Chris... don't mess with me here.") - Shallan already has a shardblade (!) - Shallan is going to feel too guilty to steal Jasnah's soul-caster OR "Princess Jasmine is going to catch her sneaking around and say 'Hey Sneak. Let's have a DMC about why you want to steal my magic jewellery.'" I also thought I'd pop back in on this thread every once in a while to update you with any fun observations she makes in the future, and thought this could be a nice place to share our experiences with introducing the series to the people in our lives and their reactions to us being insufferable and incorrigible nerds!

  2. LenKai looked back at the wall of ice and snow. Storms this late in the season were not unheard of, but the look of those clouds set fear in the heart. Traversing the mountainous region of Sel was difficult. Plenty of people die every year from starvation or exposure. Even experienced trappers had to be at least a little kayana to make your home up here. This storm looked more like the mountain was tired of dealing with those noisy neighbors and was ready to sweep them off. LenKai returned gratefully back to the small inn that served as a trapping outpost. It didn't look like much, but it was sturdy and would withstand the storm... he hoped. As he entered he saw a room full of trappers and travelers alike all huddled against the storm and the biting chill brought on by the winds of the weather changing. "Cheer up! This will be the last storm of the winter. I am LenKai, who are you?" ----------------------------------------------- Welcome to Quick Fix 43! You are a group of travelers, trappers, and occultists just trying to survive the last snowstorm of winter in a Duladel trading outpost. This storm coming through would certainly mean death for any who ventured into it. Unfortunately, staying here may be just as deadly because not everyone trapped in the outpost is here for refuge from the storm. Roles: All players: You sought shelter in this waystop, but found no rest. Between the frozen snow and the murderous zealots, survival is up to you. Work together to find the Followers of Mysteries and force them outside where they will freeze to death. To do this, send a vote through your GM PM once during each cycle. This vote can be changed until the cycle ends, does not count as an action, and will be made public at the start of each cycle. Only final votes will be made public." Follower of Mysteries: You will stop at nothing to learn the mysteries of Jesker. Each cycle you must send one vote for who to sacrifice to the GM (Elkanah) via your GM PM. This is in addition to your vote of who to throw out into the snow. The player with the most votes will be sacrificed to your mysterious purposes. Priest of Jesker: You have seen these signs before. As tensions rise and signs begin to worsen, you alone know how to find the Followers of Mysteries. You may investigate one player each cycle to learn if they are a Follower of Mysteries. Jindoese Soldier: You trained in the art of ChayShan from your youth and built up the strength to protect others. You may protect one player from Followers each cycle. Rulo: You are the fool who got themself stuck in a trading outpost you had no business being in. You're a bit kayana, so each cycle you scratch a message in the wood somewhere in the outpost, too bored to sleep. Seon Holder: The seon is a great tool for communication. As long as at least one Seon Holder is alive, there is no limit on PM's except they must include the GM. Order of Actions: Rulo Message Soldier Lynch Priest Sacrifice Additonal info: This is a quick fix with 24 hour cycles. Day and night are combined. Anyone who does not either talk to the outpost's owner (Elkanah), come to the community dinner meetings, or meet with other traders for two consecutive cycles will freeze to death in their room The game will start when we have enough players or next Wednesday the 18th at 10 pm MDT (4 am GMT) whichever comes second. Sunday March 22 for sure. Player List Spec Doc Quick Links

  5. Yes I’m still talking about Fire Emblem Three Houses. I finished Crimson Flower the other day, and am now really confused and emotionally a mess (in a good way). I’ll probably ramble some more in the Three Houses thread later. But right now I’m torn between doing Silver Snow (or going back to Radianr Historia like I know I should) or just waiting for Animal Crossing New Horizons (the wait is excruciating!)

  6. Snow whipped across Ratel's face as he stared at the outpost. Twice before he had been here and both times he had left it stained in blood from the rafters to the basement. He remembered his first time here, an old man driven near to madness by his time alone in the woods for years. But he had made friends here. Two friends who showed him the way. By the time he left the outpost he was a young man again, his eyes unclouded for the first time in as long as he could remember. His second time was even sweeter for this time he knew what he was doing. He had mastered the art of ChayShan and lead the group. Not only had they reveled in the slaughter but he managed to pick up an item of power. One of far more importance than anyone realized. The Heart of an Immortal. After two successful missions here the Cultists had taken it as a sign. They sent their new members here to test themselves against both the elements and the unsuspecting travelers trapped within the outpost. Only those truly dedicated to the Mysteries would survive here while all others would perish in the bitter cold that awaited them if caught. Ratel turned and headed deeper into the forest, the stinging wind and biting cold barely noticeable. As much as I would love to join this game I sadly do not have the time. Ratel wishes the Cultists the best of luck. And will be watching.

  7. Being a hero is not equivalent to being a hyper-capable sword-wielding man. Her strength comes from being able to endure extremely horrible emotional situations and remain standing. She keeps moving forward in order to help the people she cares about despite the constant barrage of emotional cataclysms that are inflicted upon her. As a woman she is judged by how calm she can be and by how she can serve those of her house. Her entire identity grows out of easing the pain of the men around her, and she becomes extremely good at doing so. Shallan removes herself from the equation in order to be as helpful to those around her. What ends up happening is she isn't sure which shell of herself will be of most use, and she begins to become 3 strong people in order to selflessly help those she cares about. It takes her a long time to become comfortable with the fact that she is not just some sort of emotional pain-real. In this she is stronger than Khaladin, as she has never given up on others in the way Khaladin has. Remember that Khaladin would have committed suicide if not for Syl bringing him a "leaf". Her strength is one of the things that impresses Khaladin, as he is usually the "strongest" one emotionally. As for Dalinar, he did the exact same thing as Shallan by forgetting his emotional pain. We forgive it more in him than we do in Shallan (who wasn't able to completely remove her trauma). Shallan is extremely strong, and I stand by the fact she is "stronger" than Khaladin and I have no issues wither her "winning" over Khladin. Shallan is Tien, and Khaladin would never be able to defeat that little guy anywhere outside of a battlefield.

  8. Welcome back, everyone, to the next installment of my ongoing space fantasy saga Realm of the Stars! For those just joining us, this is the third volume of a series I pitch as "Star Wars meets King Arthur meets Dune" and is the ending of the initial trilogy I have in mind (though I still have plans for more works in this universe!) - if you're looking for the Arthurian parallels, then this story's events would roughly correspond to Arthur's war with Rome. If you're interested in checking out the previous installments of this series, then Volume I is here, Volume II is here and some character portraits are here. And here we go! Prologue and Dramatis Personae:

  9. Hello All I Recently finished 6th of the dusk which was the last on my list for published cosmere books. I listened to Sando's works mostly with Graphic Audio but generally looked up maps on the net to make sure I'm not missing anything. Finally planned to do more than cremposting and actually try to learn more about cosmere magic systems and conspiracy theories so that's why I'm here. I made a thread here some time ago asking a question but haven't followed up just yet. Here some random cosmere info I think is correct about me: Favorite series: Stormlight Archive Favorite Shard: Devotion Desired Radiants Order: Releasers Desired Twinborn: A Pewter F Gold Favorite emotional manipulation effect: The Thrill which I sometimes get during competitive sports especially volleyball or video games, Though I have tried alcohol and Cannabis so I can sorta tell what being under the effects of emotional manipulation feels like. Resisting the effect is harder than it sounds though not impossible, Most effective way I found to resist is a sudden influx of intense rage/thrill or fear. I can kinda understand Koloss better now. Brandon Sanderson and his writers have really thought about these things... Favorite Character: The Fused, Just like them I also know what it feels like to be stuck in an endless fantasy battle hating your enemy and hostile with your allies, forever fighting yet going nowhere. This is because I play competitive league of legends. Jokes aside I can partly connect with Kaladin, Elend and Shallan in certain ways but The character I best connect with will probably be Lightsong though I'm not as bold as he is.

  10. Parshmen seem much worse off than Drabs. IIRC Drabs have lost a part of their Innate Investiture. It does affect emotions and such, as well as weakening their immune system, etc., but Drabs function in society (many Hallandren inhabitants gave up their Breaths as children and have lived their whole adult lives as Drabs). They don't have the lack of will and "inactivated" personalities parshmen show. Of course, humans don't have the inherent changeability and spren-bond dependence of the singer/listener species.

  11. I agree that Aluminum Hemalurgy (not aluminumminds - feruchemy) does not do the same thing as Nightblood. I was just saying that the specific Spiritual-cutting effect we see on Roshar isn't necessary to qualify as a "Shardblade", since Nightblood's effect is different. I agree that being highly Invested by itself doesn't give any destructive effect. It should, however, let the object block a Shardblade (more like a half-shard shield). My suggestion was that an Aluminummind that was hugely Invested by Compounding (just a bit less than the maximum for a sword-sized object, not totally "full", to allow "room" for the Hemalurgic charge) would block a Shardblade. The Aluminum Hemalurgy (not Feruchemy) was then added to give the "power destruction effect".

  19. Might I add to this that when Spook was burnt to near death Sazed noted that if he were a Pewter arm he would have heal right up in a matter of days/week if he had kept burning. I don't know about you but recovering completely from wounds like that sound exactly like Wayne recovering from his burns. I agree with @Pathfinder that from what we have seen Pewter seems to work like F-gold just that It is doing so much more then just healing. You would have to be A-compounding or mist powered to get the same healing speed. But at that point your muscles and bones would be so durable that nothing but a mountain falling on you or a shardblade would damage you.

  21. Just for the heck of it (and because I needed something to draw before I go nuts) I decided to draw my theoretical Perfect Mindblade (The kind that acts as a Medallion and has Ettmetal on it). The Nicrosil is a medallion-like setup that contains A-Pewter and F-Iron, which is given to the user so that they can prime the Ettmetal to mimic both, reducing weight and enhancing the durability of the sword, like a Rosharan Shardblade. It's not as light or truly unbreakable like one, but it's an improvement over mundane steel to be sure.

  24. Shallan has been trying for years to convince herself that she isn't in pain. She uses Veil and Radiant as crutches who have sound pasts to pretend, while she compartmentalizes and struggles to deal with her past in any sense. Kaladin has a much more common and more visible pain, which makes him much easier to relate to. Shallan also isn't supposed to be a spear-brandishing badass like Kal, nor has she had a past remotely close to his. I don't thinks its bold to say that most people were probably solidly team Kal post WoK. She's struggling to to figure out how to be useful and constantly second guessing herself. This doesn't make her a bad character, unlikable at times yes, but not objectively bad. Just because I don't like her sometimes doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching her develop and interact with other characters. She interesting!

  25. this WOB mentions the cold giving you flight even then its probably random for now until the book is made Questioner What idea for a book you loved didn't work? Brandon Sanderson Yeah. It happens all the time, absolutely happens all the time. There's one that I did some readings from, that I got a scene written, where I wanted to do this cool book where I had this setting. The pitch on it was, what if viruses and bacteria evolved to give people magical talents when you caught the disease. This idea that a bacteria doesn't actually want to kill you, or a virus doesn't want to kill you. It wants you to live and spread it. You getting sick is a side effect. What if the side effect is, you got the common cold, all the sniffles and everything, but you could fly as long as you had the common cold? What would that do to society? What happens when someone invents penicillin and can wipe out half of these magical talents? What happens if people start catching a disease that makes everything they touch start on fire. So it was a story about basically fantasy Jack Bauer, who's a member of the fantasy CDC, who tries to stop diseases and things like this. But in order to do his job, he has to keep his immune system terrible, like this weakling who can barely get up the steps, so that he can quickly catch diseases to get the powers he needs to deal with outbreaks of these things. It's just a really cool concept that I've never been able to gel into an actual story. It hasn't worked every time I've tried to write it. FAQFriday 2018 (Jan. 12, 2018)

  26. OK, I dusted off an old map that speculated on the location of the Aimia and Shinovar OGs, because I started thinking about the fortress at the center of the Purelake, and I remembered that one of the Oathgate radials I drew, crossed through the center of the Purelake. And then of course I remembered Feverstone keep, that we know almost nothing about other than it is close to RallElorim and is on a plain. I of course wondered could it be a Coastal Plain in the rain shadow of the mountains? And then I wondered is it just pure coincidence that one of the radials just happens to cross through the Horneater Peaks and the Cultivation shardpools? The same radial, BTW, that Kholinar (the first gate captured) is on? So thinking about those two fortresses, I started thinking, yeah the Oathgates are cool and allow all the good little people move around, but these gates were built for WAR as well. And gates in the middle of cities are not very defensible, sure they can be locked and all, but come on?! If you were building a vast infrastructure like this wouldn't you want some safeguards? So I wondered, maybe there is a reason that the Purelake fortress is on a radial. And maybe Feverstone Keep as well. Maybe there are other fortresses scattered around Roshar, and they have oathgate rooms at their centers! Ok by that point the speculation train was running on full steam. Jumping tracks. Whoo boy. Urithiru. The middle of all of these Oathgates. A city tower. An Arcology. Cities need power to run. City wide heat, water, sewage, air circulation stormlight for quickly growing crops etc… Not to mention possibly having some sort of defensive array, or intra-tower teleportation pads or remote viewing screens, Mickey mouse alarm clocks. Lots of power. But all Urithiru has is a battery. A big honkin battery maybe, but just a battery. Ok people say that the Sibling is supposed to make it run, but show me a single location where Spren empowered a single thing? Yes they direct function, but they don't provide the actual power for it. Stormlight does. So just how the heck is that pretty battery filled? Well, we will just lower this itty bitty cage of gemstones down to the storm… Nahh. Well, the people using the Oathgates give extra stormlight… What? How? How is it collected and transported to the battery? OK, what about Bondsmiths? Just open a perpendicularity near the battery and bam! Full power baby! Ummm, first we don't know if all Bondsmiths could do that, or for that matter if any of them could, until Dalinar came along. It's been RAFO'd. Second, do you really want to be opening a GATEWAY to the Cognitive and Spiritual realms at the heart of your fortress city? That's just begging for some sort of desperation attack. Hmmmm. If only we had some way of collecting Stormlight from across all of Roshar… Hey gancho, we have this pretty array of gateways all around Roshar, why do they have to do just ONE thing? Why do the Oathgates have TWO spren? One of them certainly looks like a Giant Inkspren, but does that other one look like a giant bronze spren to you? Lets face it, a giant spren of the Elsecallers should be more than enough for shuffling stuff around through preprogrammed fabrials. So what is the white one's function? We know it's sentient, but it doesn't match up to any other higher spren that we've seen on camera. Maybe it's there for an entirely different reason, maybe it's there to funnel stormlight back through the network to provide power to the city?! So, you ask, why isn't the battery full? After all, it's been sitting there doing nothing for millennia. Well maybe the gates need to be unlocked. What about the Stormseat gate, it's unlocked now? Maybe it needs to be exposed and not covered in crem. What about the Thaylin gate? Bahh! I need a drink.

  29. Cryogenically freezing a person and them surviving is currently a myth at our technological level. The human body is just not made to survive the experience. Certain animals can (lizards I believe being the main example) but not humans. So it would kill the person. Then unless you bring them back shortly after, they would fully die and their "self" would be gone. No amount of stormlight would bring them back after that.

I know she was crawling, but at one point, I thought she was walking hunched over. After, when she started climbing the fence, I kept thinking, "why didn't they do that in first place." I had that same thought again when they blew up the fence. It made it seem like the whole stinking (pun intended) crawl was for nothing. Agree! Also, I, like M, was getting attached to them in the way Q thinks M was getting attached to them. I was also very confused at the end. I couldn't tell if the soldiers saw them, or just happened to be destroying the door thing they were behind. Yes. And at least for the next couple weeks, I should be able to read subs on time! :-)

  32. Over all, I thought this was a very good chapter. It's really nice to finally be getting some action and payoff and I'm excited to read more! I did get confused with some of the blocking around the action scenes, and everyone's position relative to each other. As I go: I agree with @kais , that's not a great word to use and a more appropriate one can probably be found. Stiff? Bilk? Skip/run out on? Leave in the lurch? Leave high and dry? Leave holding the bag/baby? I have forgotten what the acronym TF means. I hope it's just WRS, but if it hasn't come up in text recently, it might be worth it spell it out again as a reminder It was a little confusing, but I really liked how tense M's crawl was. Very good! I figured D would be using the phonetic alphabet for shouting the gate code, since I thought they were a decent distance apart? Or are they close enough it doesn't matter. I'm a bit hazy on everyone's relative positions in general though "This try-fail stuff" -- lol! "Faster, Dinosaur!" -- So many in jokes lol "pogrom" -- Going all out with the jokes, apparently, "Send two raptors" -- Aren't they programmed to not attack humans? Are the troops not human? How would the dinos know? I guess I'm confused why the dinos would stop or distract the troops longer than it would take to shoot the animals from a distance and move on. Is this doing anything other than needlessly killing a couple dinos? It doesn't seem to me like it would even slow down the sorts of troops being deployed here, especially if they know the dinos are programmed not to attack people (or have a copy of the direction app. I think it'd be just giving them more weapons at that point).

  34. Whenever I stumble across anything with three wishes, my brain immediately goes to a incredibly dumb joke I stumbled across on Reddit once: (Edited for language and content) Three men are hiking through the woods when they come across a lamp. One of them picks it up, rubs it, and out pops a Genie. It booms, "You have finally freed me after all these years, so I'll grant each one of you 3 wishes." The first guy immediately blurts out "I want a billion dollars." POOF, he's holding a printout that shows his account balance is now in fact 1,000,000,003.50 The second man thinks for a bit, then says "I want to be the richest man alive." POOF, he's holding papers showing his net worth is now well over 100 billion. The third guy thinks even longer about his wish, then says "I want my left arm to rotate clockwise for the rest of my life." POOF, his arm starts rotating. The Genie tells them it's time for their second wish. First guy says: "I want to be married to the most beautiful woman on earth." POOF, a stunning beauty wraps herself around his arm. Second guy says "I want to be good-looking and charismatic, so I can have every girl I want." POOF, his looks change and the first guy's wife immediately starts flirting with him. Third guy says "I want my right arm to rotate counter-clockwise until I die." POOF, now both his arms are rotating, in opposite directions. The genie tells them to think very carefully about their third wish. First guy does, and after a while says "I never want to become sick or injured, I want to stay healthy until I die." POOF, his complexion improves, his acne is gone and his knees don't bother him any more. Second guy says "I never want to grow old. I want to stay 29 forever." POOF, he looks younger already. Third guy smiles triumphantly and says "My last wish is for my head to nod back and forth." POOF, he's now nodding his head and still flailing his arms around. The genie wishes them good luck, disappears, and the men soon go their separate ways. Many years later they meet again and chat about how things have been going. First guy is ecstatic: "I've invested the money and multiplied it many times over, so me and my family will be among the richest of the rich pretty much forever. My wife is incredible, and I've never gotten so much as a cold in all these years." Second guy smiles and says "Well, I built charities worldwide with a fraction of my wealth, I'm still the richest guy alive and also revered for my good deeds. I haven't aged a day since we last met, and yes, your wife is pretty dang incredible." Third guy walks in, flailing his arms around and nodding his head, and says: "Guys, I think I screwed up."

  35. That's a fair point, I just figured a Command would become part of a Lifeless' Spirit Web, possibly as part of their Identity. 'Would Commands be part of a Lifeless' Spirit Web?' Is probably a better question, because if it is, then it may open up the possibility of mucking about with Hemalurgic spikes. Or are Commands just inherently Breath/Investiture overlaid on top of the Lifeless? Do they not show up in the Spirit Web at all? As an aside, from what you posted, along with It seems as though Lifeless somewhat retain their original Identity (I'm probably treading ground others have covered on these forums here). (Also sorry for posting the full quotes, I can't post links yet.)
