  1. I am putting this in Cosmere Discussion rather than the Warbreaker forum because these topics and characters are not restricted to that book. If you are are looking at this and you haven't read Warbreaker and the Stormlight Archive this may contain spoilers. Also this may have already been brought up but I couldn't find anything. I was thinking about what Vasher might use his divine breath for, as he has lived for hundreds of years and still doesn't know why he Returned, and realized that a rather poetic (and paradoxical) end for him would be to heal Nightblood. Nightblood has been described as a poor or inaccurate replica of a shardblade, as broken or opposite compared to them. The abilities and qualities of a divine breath are not fulled defined or understood, so it may be possible for one to essentially fix Nightblood to match the intent of its creation. This would be possible because divine breaths seem to heal across all three realms, as seen with Susebron; when Lightsong healed Susebron he didn't just grow back a physical tongue, but was able to speak intuitively, as if he had never been without one. If a normal person gained a tongue after living without one since birth they would need extensive speech therapy to be able to speak, and even then they may never get to baseline. The flaws with Nightblood aren't physical, they have to do with how he interacts with the cognitive and spiritual realm, so the holistic healing offered by the divine breaths could fix his inability to understand time and morality, as well as stop him from killing his wielder unintentionally after being consumed by his command. This would make him a more powerful true shardblade like Shashara and Vasher intended. In order for this to work a divine breath would need to be able to act on a sentient splinter in the same way it does a human. Since they can act on a Returned which are splinters of Endowment it may work on Nightblood, but this could also be explained by the Returned being cognitive shadows, so who knows. It appears that Nightblood has an important role to play in the fight against Odium and maybe in a greater overarching conflict throughout the Cosmere, so it would make sense that Vasher was returned to heal Nightblood. This would be a cool paradox because it means that he was returned to fix a future problem that wouldn't come to pass if he wasn't returned. The one caveat is that it's possible that Shashara would have created Nightblood even without Vasher's involvement. This was fun to think about, I love the character of Vasher and hope to see more of him going forward. If something like this does happen I doubt it would take place in Stormlight Archive because that would be a bit more crossover than Sanderson is probably comfortable with.

  2. Don't do it Brandon, they will find a way to ruin it. Anyway, I'm only half joking, but on a more serious note, I'm very skeptical. You'd think that someone who writes good books would also write good screenplays, but that's not necessarily the way it works. They're very different mediums and I'm not convinced that Brandon's way of writing translates well from one to the other. After all, adapting one of his fantasy epics to a Graphic Novel didn't work well either. I'm certainly not the one to question his work division decisions, but I'd rather have him work on something else.

  3. Vasher giving up his Divine Breath for Nightblood is not a twist I saw coming when I clicked this Topic, tbh. It's pretty much a given to wonder if Vasher will heal someone at the cost of his own life given how that works but I never wondered if that someone could be Nightblood... I rather like it! But a Divine Breath is approx 2k Breaths, iirc, would that be enough?

  5. Since everyone but Joe forgot my birthday a few weeks ago (my revenge is forthcoming, don't worry), I decided that we should have a thread for it. So they don't get forgotten. Like mine was. At the bottom of the forum page, underneath all the stuff, by the cbox, you can see what members have turned another year older. For example, on March 11th, the name "Shivertongue" was there with quite the prominence. If you would like to wish someone a happy birthday (or even a belated one, 16 days overdue) you can do it in this thread. And continue doing it in this thread, for everybody, so that new threads for a single person's birthday don't eventually clog up the board. And this way, we're not using "I Would Like To Announce" for everything. Make sense? I'm pinning this to the top, by the way, so you cannot ignore it. Or forget it. Ever. Edit: I'll start off. Happy Birthday, spacemonkey!

  6. Friends! I am now building a Fabrial! And I stand by that description because, Comrades...Crystal Power! I recently learned that Piezoelectric Transformers are a thing. This means that I can make my power glove design work with a literal Crystal Power Module, rather that the (much bulkier) magnetic flyback transformer I was planning to use. This makes my inner child so incredibly happy, you dont even know. So Im going to come around and ramble about the progress of my designs every now and then, mostly to keep project momentum. Im also going to randomly describe it in cosmere/realmic terms wherever possible, because reasons. For the uninitiated, piezoelectric crystals are everywhere, they are a really cool bit of physics where you can apply physical stress and get a burst of electric current (seen in those sparking furnace or grill starters), or conversely they will emit a very regular mechanical movement when an electric current is applied. Nearly every modern clock and computer uses these for precise timekeeping. That was the limit of their usefulness as far as I knew, but it turns out you can use these for real Power distribution. The concept is similar to any other transformer (or lever or pulley system, for that matter) where you put energy in one side of an imbalanced structure and get a step-up or step-down version of that energy out the other side. In traditional magnetic transformers, you have to run an electric current though a coil, and if the current is constantly changing (ie AC power) that energy will move into a Magnetic Field. If you hold another coil within that field, the energy will come out the other end. Much like levers that trade distance for force, the relative number of tuns in the two coils will trade Voltage for Current. Piezoelectric Transformers work in much the same way, except instead of moving the energy through the Magnetic domain to affect the change, it stores it as a physical force (vibration). One side of the piezo electric transformer is layered while the other is not, arranged in such they same mechanical vibration will yield different voltages and currents. Now, my goal is all about high voltages to get visible electric arcs as long and showy as possible, but with relatively low currents (for safety as much as anything else). This is the ideal application for PZT transformers, as the give a dramatic step-up in voltage (100:1) but doesnt scale up well for high current applications. My general plan is to have a bank of deep draw batteries (chemistry TBD) providing anywhere from 12-30 volts, feed those to a resonant inverter circuit to drive the PZT, and feed the resulting output (~1200VAC @55khz) into a Cockcroft–Walton voltage multiplier to get me somewhere north of 20kv DC. That will be the electricity available at the fingertips for basic arc fun. I also intend to design the physical hardware to maximize corona discharge so I get a proper blue glow from the energized bits, but only time will tell how well that's going to work out. Secondary phase of this design will be to build a proper Marx Stack pulse generator into a baton, which should be capable of throwing over 100 kV. Which is also why I want the business end a solid foot or two away from me (this was the fundamental flaw in my old Marx Blade design). Ive done smaller scale versions of this, they arent all that complicated and they utilize a satisfying number of spark gaps in the core function. Looking into it, I should be able to also feed the glove power into several other fun things, including a coil gun or even a hand-held EMP (which of course I wont actually do because the FCC hates them). That's it for now, I will return with preliminary pictures. Next step, reverse engineer the circuit on a laptop backlight power driver I found on ebay, or at least enough of it to cut into the right part of the circuit. This is basically how I image Hemalurgy: a plan, a pile of unrelated circuit boards, and a hacksaw...

  8. So, in the last weeks, two interesting informations surfaced regarding the Reckoners multiverse, and since I haven't seen people talk about them, I thought I might just share them. It’s been confirmed from the get-go that Apocalypse Guard would take place in the Reckoners multiverse. Now, it has been uncertain for some time whether or not Apocalypse Guard would actually ever be released, since Brandon had a bunch of problems with it. Even after getting Dan Wells on board, he still wasn’t sure about it. So the story that was meant to expand on the multiverse was almost scrapped. Also, Snapshot, which was originally intended as taking place in one Core Possibility (the only one besides the Reckoners series up to that point), was pulled out of the continuity for film rights reasons. So the multiverse as a project seemed to have come to a halt, and I always thought that him writing Skyward as a new big YA project was meant to make up for that. Then this WOB surfaced: So, albeit momentarily uncertain and non-canon, there is a connection between Skyward and Reckoners, which would be elaborated on in Apocalypse Guard? That would make Skyward part of the multiverse. Then there was also the reading with Dan Wells in February, with Brandon stressing that they will get Apocalypse Guard released eventually. Dan Wells’ went on to read the beginning of the first chapter (which has now been reworked). And, behold, this chapter features another hint on something else a few paragraphs in, which I will leave to you to hear for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfd5zIA0SYU&t=1940s In case you missed the connection/don't know what I'm talking about: So: Brandon seems to be confident about Apocalypse Guard eventually being released, and if he manages to keep these things in there during the process, the multiverse will be very alive and breathing at last - much moreso than I would have thought! Actually, this seems to be heading towards insane "Canon Wielding" with it. Who knows which other works he will combine? Peter once suggested that Alcatraz would also be a contender for a Core Possibility. This raises some questions: With Apocalypse Guard apparently connecting a whole bunch of Brandon’s non-Cosmere works, will the forums adopt to that in any way? Will there be a “Multiverse” section along with the already existing “Cosmere” section, and then a third, "Other Works" section instead of the current "Non-Cosmere Works" section? I kinda fear the multiverse will give this forum’s (and, in some ways, the Coppermind's) structure a hard time in the future.

  9. I was finishing a reread of the way of kings today. In Dalinar's last vision the storm (presumably the everstorm but it is described as a dust storm with no mention of rain and red lightning, I suspect it could be "the true desolation" instead) is described as turning the rocks to dust; when reading that I remembered that stormwater is described as tasting metallic. Could part of Odium's body have been stolen and mixed into the stormwater/crem, this could be part of why Odium is bound to the Roshar system and why he is so focused on the desolation? Odium would need to destroy the entire surface of the continent to free himself. There isn't much evidence for this theory but I think it's worth considering.

  10. It's mostly a formatting thing of the Elantris novel (similar to how there's going to be 10 Stormlight books etc) that originally made me think this. From the Coppermind Elantris trivia section: Then, as you mentioned, the three continents/three empires, but also the Aons usually having three phonemes, which also makes all those important words work in a similar way, like Dor, Aon, Sel itself. Then a few reasons that are admittedly rather esoteric,, like the Dor acting as the "third" thing that was a result of Devotion and Dominion mixing, rather than what happened to Preservation and Ruin, which are still not fully combined. I'm sure I overlooked an important one, but I can't seem to remember . . . Anyway, "very dominant", as I phrased it, is admittedly a stretch, but it's present, especially considering that Brandon went such great lengths to make the whole book 3-based.

So it sounds like he doesn't know to me “Yes,” she said. “Everyone calls you things. Peacegiver. Kalad. Vasher. Talaxin. Is that last one your real name, the name of the scholar?” He shook his head. “No.” “Well, what is it, then?” “I don’t know,” he said. “I can’t remember the time before I Returned.” “Oh,” she said. “When I came back, however, I did get a name,” he finally said. “The Cult of Returned—those who eventually founded the Hallandren Iridescent Tones—found me and kept me alive with Breaths. They gave me a name. I didn’t like it much. Didn’t seem to fit me.” “Well?” she asked. “What was it?” “Warbreaker the Peaceful,” he finally admitted. She raised an eyebrow. “What I can’t figure out,” he said, “is whether that was truly prophetic, or if I’m just trying to live up to it.” “Does it matter?” she asked. He walked for a time in silence. “No,” he finally said. “No, I guess it doesn’t. I just wish I knew if there is really something spiritual about the Returns, or if it’s all just cosmic happenstance.” “Probably not for us to know.” “Probably,” he agreed. Silence.

  12. Yeah era 1 mistborns have large limitations it seems like. All a windrunner would need to do is put as many lashings as possible on a wooden javelin (or any sharp stick and game over). mistborns can't really fly or even "fall up" they just leap tall buildings in a single bound. As for pewter, the way the Seith Son Son Velano knocked people about when infused with stormlight leads me to think Radiants are at least the match for them in speed and strength with storm-light. Also Radiants healing factor is insane. I think a better comparison would be an inquisitor or perhaps a mistborn inquisitor.

  13. Whether he’s technically a truthwatcher or not is a matter of semantics. I’d guess I’d call him the voidbinding version of a truthwatchers? Idk, I’ll leave it to in-world people to determine the terminology for what he is. Since the first oath is the same for every order, there are four unique ideals. I think two of the unique ideals will be the same as normal truthwatchers, and two will be different. This is based on the impression that voidbinding is half a reflection of surgebinding and half an inversion. After all, one of Renarin’s surges appears to function the same as normal truthwatchers while the other functions completely differently. Yes, he may be able to use lightweaving like Truthwatchers can, but we haven’t seen it on screen, so my belief is that his future visions have replaced normal lightweaving abilities. Also, one side of the symbols on the voidbinding chart is oriented the same as the corresponding surgebinding symbol while the other side is flipped upside down. So to me, voidbinding seems very half and half. Half the same, half different.

  17. Brandon implies that Divine Breath healing restoring a Platonic ideal of health and hence Susebron being able to talk even though normal Cosmere healing wouldn't be expected to have that result is 'on the right track'. So yeah, it's likely a function of the Divine Breath and not Susebron having a lot of Breaths. Brandon has said that Shashara (and by extension Vasher) know of no way to recover the Breaths that went into Nightblood and while there are technically ways to get the Investiture out they're not removable by an Awakener in the normal way and Nightblood can't give them away.

  18. Is this due to the healing of the divine breath, or the fact that he had thousands of breath himself and the heightening (2nd heightening; approximately 200 breaths) that included perfect pitch? Still, this is an interesting theory and it is intriguing. A thought that I wondered as I was reading; can Vasher just recall his breath from Nightblood and the sword return to an inanimate object? I don't know why not (maybe because Nightblood is too invested), but I'd think if this was possible Vasher would've already tried it.

  21. As to the question as to whether Dalinar Ascended with a capital A, that is a question I'm sure we all would like the answer to. We must read future novels to determine this. The beads are only a tiny portion of Preservation. The power itself is infinite, and the Vessels have some volition as to how they manifest their power. For Leras it wasn't just the beads but the mist covering the planet and the Shardpool at the Well of Ascension. Atium was artificially rare, there was much more than what was circulating among the population. It took 300 people hours and hours of continuous burning to exhaust the stockpile, this considering that one could burn a bead of Atium the size of a marble in less than a minute.

They were capable of instantenuous transport to any location on the planet (or potentially even other planets or planes of existence) in addition to possessing near unbeatable combat capabilities and higher than average awareness of the Cosmere due to the nature of Elsecallers. In their heyday, they would have been capable of ruling the entirety of Roshar - and they probably did just that for a while.

And Arelon is on a different continent than the Rose Empire, so they would be weak to the point of uselessness at that distance. The Emperor's Soul is just a little while after the events of Elantris--a few decades at most, iirc.

  25. This thread seems to be half book quotes and half stranger quotes, but the most memorable quote I can think of not from a book came from my high school days. In high school, there was this particular kid, C., that was very good looking but... wasn't the sharpest spoon in the knife drawer. A 6'2" football player. Then there was Ms. E, our history teacher, five foot nothing, in her self-imposed uniform of grey dresses and blue blazers. She had a Chihuahua complex. Once C. called her a witch to her face, but that's not particularly quotable. There was this one day when C. said something so ridiculous that Ms. E came up to him and put a fist a foot above his head and began to tilt it sideways. We asked her what she was doing, to which she replied, "I'm watering his common sense seed." Won't lie, sometimes I wish I could water my students' common sense seeds myself...

  27. Soulstamps are a different magic system from AonDor. It uses the same investiture (The Dor), but it's based on MaiPon instead of Elantris/Arelon. It uses its own symbols, with the setting mark based on MaiPon. Shai just left Aon Reo on the wall when she left as a big insult, sort of like leaving an Anarchy symbol or something. All of the magics on that planet are based on symbols that resemble the land of the person using the magic. So Soulstamping is similar to AonDor, but is its own system.

  28. After the meeting's end, the various members and messengers of the Set took their leave. Ned, however, took his time leaving. He knew that the EBI would be waiting for him, after all. So he took a last look around, took a look in a mirror to ensure his thin mustache looked immaculate and took his time buttoning up his trench-coat. Then, when there was nothing left to do, he dramatically tossed open the door and stepped outside. The door slamming open attracted some attention from passers-by, but no one suddenly pointed a weapon at him, no one shouted to ‘get him’ and most certainly no one was waving a badge around. This troubled Ned. He was certain this would be the moment. But with nothing else for it, he waved down a carriage and started the journey home. Still fretting over the lack of a team of constables to arrest him, it took him awhile to realize that the parts of town the carriage took him through looked rather unfamiliar. He banged the roof of his conveyance, demanding to know where the carriage driver thought he was taking him, though he already knew the answer. Of course the EBI had send a carriage to stealthily carry him away to the gaol, leaving him completely unaware until it was too late. If nothing else, he had to congratulate them for their guile. “My apologies, sir! There was a crash on the main road, so I needed to find a way around. It shouldn’t be too much of a detour though!” The carriage driver called out in response to Ned's demand for information. And so it was. Several minutes later the carriage had returned to the roads Ned was familiar with, and Ned arrived at his home only several minutes later than expected. Ned braced himself as he descended from the carriage. Surely this would be the moment then, the moment in which the EBI descended on him and made their arrest. But no such thing occurred. Nor did Ned find any agents hiding in his house, even after making a thorough search. The creaking floorboards that woke him up a grand total of six times during the night were just the result of his house settling, and not a sign of an impending assault on his bedroom. And the paper he found rolled up on his doorstep the next morning was just his usual broadsheet, rather than an arrest warrant. Suffice to say, Ned was a bit of a wreck when he left his home to attend the day’s meeting. He was so sleep-deprived and occupied by his own thoughts that he failed to notice the two burly men waiting just outside his door and barreled right into them, resulting in an unfortunate fall. It took him a moment to realize that, in addition to helping him back to his feet, one of the men had also slipped a pair of manacles on his hands. When the situation finally registered with him, he had only one thing to say to them. “About rusting time!” *** Elkanah has been arrested! He was a loyal copper Ferring array in the 'involuntary holidays' Subset. He has left an unkeyed coppermind in a safe place, for those wit the ability to read it. Player list: Day 6 has begun. 31. Doing a reread now! I think definitely the first book. The first book had everything. It's got character growth, action, a heist at an impossible task that would also save the world, an epic magic system to explore with hints of even more behind the scenes. Pretty awesome stuff. Basically everything I want. Each of the other two has minor flaws that make them not as excellent. The second book seems like a step down in two ways. First, the stakes - after fighting to end a thousand-year-long tyranny by a god, mundane fights against armies don't seem to matter as much to me, so I never quite got into that conflict as much. The stakes get raised with the Well storyline, but how it mattered and connected just felt more obscure and hard to connect to. And second, of course, is the recurring theme that in times of crisis, democracy fails and you need a strongman ruler to take control of things. Given the decay of democracy going on the past few years in the US, that message seems very topical and not in a good way. In the third book, I didn't like how, in retrospect, it made most of what the characters did in books 1 and 2 feel like not their accomplishments, just Ruin's manipulation. In addition, the direct conflict with Ruin always pinged my suspension of disbelief a bit - when Ruin was released at the end of book 2, it felt like GG, heroes lose, world destroyed. It never quite made sense why Ruin would mess up a winning position that badly. Yes, I got the explanations the book provided, but it didn't feel to me to be as natural as book 1. I greatly enjoyed all three. But the very first one is definitely my favorite.

This is NOT what he was planning on and NOT what he likes. The ancient history of Roshar is not going to be simple good guys & bad guys, just because people and history is complicated. Humanity may not be innocent, or even guilty of everything, but the Singers will be more complicated in their motivations, and not as perfectly innocent as the dawnchant translation might indicate. Taravangian is more important than Odium realizes, and he is a fool for trusting Mr T. I wouldn't make a deal with the Devil, but on Mr T's genius days, I pity the Devil! I doubt Mr T will survive book 5. Bonus points if Rayse & Mr T both die, meet in the Cognitive Realm, and Mr T just laughs himself hoarse, at what he did to Rayse. Put this relationship on sizzle. Their banter will have sparking flying. Jasnah will verbally shred Kaladin frequently, but be delighted that he is intelligent enough to stand up to her sparring. More conversations like the one about cuddling a skyeel. If they don't kill eachother, then it will be hot. If they don't kill each other. I expect that Rlain will bond the Sibling. I expect Mr T will bond the Nightwatcher. And once he does that, Dalinar can't get rid of him at all! These will be our Bondsmiths. Something odd is going on with Rock. I am not sure he going to have a typical spren bond, considering he used a shardbow at the end of book 3, and considering his unique Listener heritage. Lopen could have a unique type of bond as well for similar reasons. Natanatans may also have unique bonds considering their Aimian heritage. Further, we could see some unique bonds and unique resonances in Venli and Renarin. Adolin and Maya may make some progress, but she will not be restored until book 9 or 10. Adolin may have struggles with his father and with being a father, potentially. Cultivation will continue to play coy and uninterested, and Odium will continue to think she isn't doing much. He is so wrong. He greatly underestimates her. She is cultivating the entire population of Roshar to do what she needs. She will also gain control of Odium's surges, and perhaps even one of his Unmade. This will not all happen in book 4. Maybe book 5. Not finished until book 10. Zahel and his old friend will have a serious talk. Not sure how he is getting out of this one. But Nightblood will play a crucial role at crucial moment. Nale and Ishar are going to be a big a problem as the Singer/Listener armies, if not bigger. Hoid will continue to be witty and in places you don't expect. Book 5 will end with Odium himself coming straight at Hoid, and Hoid has to run, and use every magic and trick he knows. The clash of armies will pale in comparison. Armies fighting, might even stop and watch the fireworks. It will be spectacular. At some point, perhaps book 5 or later, Nightblood will either be held by, or (more likely) strike Odium. This will be like sticking a fork in a power socket, with the power of a shard being drained through Nightblood. Expect some fuses to blow and Odium to temporarily lose a significant amount of power. I hope Nightblood will survive this. Endowment has been planning this for Odium from the very beginning, and this is the real reason Zahel is on Roshar, no matter what he thinks. His divine breath will be used at a crucial pivotal moment, much like Lightsong. Navani will continue to develop Mage-punk tech. Also, we have not seen the last of Jasnah's bandolier. She may introduce firearms to Roshar as a way to neutralize Voidbringers.

If someone tells you he needs to to accept a demon in his order, because the demon spilled his blood and is therefore now a brother of the order - just kill him. Don't waste any time in discussion. (And yes that happend. It really happend. That demon wanted to kill that guy and instead of killing it he said "Welcome to my order." And yes we wasted time discussing this. So don't!!!)

  44. The main thing I am seeing is that most of the SLA cast are not white americans or brits, the alethi look similar to people from the middle east and India. I do not know cinema in general very well and even less when it comes to countries outside of the US so I think that me trying to cast this book will not be completely accurate to the source material. But here are the few I have come up with. Taravangian: Anthony Hopkins Lopen: (I know this is type casting but I cant help it after antman) Micheal Pena Rysn: Sami Gayle Kaladin: (If the actor was younger) Alexander Siddig, I am a huge DS9 fan Odium: Ryan Reynolds or Chris Pine or Samuel Jackson The Rock as Rock

  46. Kaladin taking charge of Sadeas' army, as either High Prince or just their commander would be a great story line For book 4. There was a brief reference to how Sadeas kept his army structured through competition, and that they were falling apart without him. Then at the end of the battle some fled with the army but some were dazed and defeated. I love the idea of this group, who had once despised Kaladin and his bridge crew, train under him and learn to follow him.

  47. Yeah. Worldhoppers from Ashyn are likely the equivalent of daycare kids. Walking disease factories. You would think the 17th Shard would be more mindful of that possibility though with their whole non-interference thing. I would hate to think of what germs Hoid might have.

  49. After looking through some of the TWG archives, I was wondering if one of these were going to pop up (and if it were mine I would probably start it myself ) Anyway, *sigh* happy belated birthday, shivertongue. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my best friend Courtney, who is lame and doesn't read fantasy. She is all adult-ish and stuff now. EDIT mwahaha, my evil plan is working. Posting the link to this thread on my FB got her to come to my "nerd" website!
