  2. The commissioner had to resist the urge to shake her head in disbelief. The agent’s infiltration effort had seemed doomed, with their numbers rapidly dwindling. Yet now things had started to look up for them. Several Subsets had lost important members, and it seemed that the report was suggesting that some members of the Set had defected and were providing information to the EBI. And yet, she hadn’t been informed of any of that in the short progress reports that had made their way to her desk over the past weeks. She was very concerned about the integrity of her own organization now, as proof of an organized effort to keep her in the dark kept mounting. Despite everything, the infiltrators had kept their operation running and were making important arrests. She wondered if Kidpen resented his incarceration, or if he was happy to not have to face an inquisition like on the previous day again. She put it on the substantial list of things she’d have to ask the captured Set members once she got the chance. *** Kidpen has been arrested. Take the assassin and get me that ruby. Together, we hold this city until Renarin returns with troops. Any questions?” “Um…” Lift said. “Could you maybe … tell me where to get something to eat…?” Dalinar glanced at her. Something to eat? “There … should be a supply dump just inside the wall.” “Thanks!” Dalinar sighed, then started walking toward the water.

  4. Discussion had quieted down after mr. King’s arrest. Previously outspoken members of the Set now kept their own council, worrying that they would be next. Yet not everyone had been cowed into silence. ‘Mr. Bubblegum’, fresh from his recent success in revealing a member of the EBI and the successful rebranding of his organisation pushed for an attack on the Set member known as Kidpen. This proved to be a mistake. “Now listen here, ‘Mr Bubblegum’, Kidpen happens to be a trusted friend of mine.” one array pointed out. “Yeah, you think that just because you got one EBI agent that that means you can go around accusing anyone you want?” Another spoke up. “And what kind of Alias is ‘mr. Bubblegum’ anyway?” A particular Scalar brought up. “Yeah, it’s so obviously a fake name that it kinda defeats the purpose.” Another voice added. “You know, I wouldn’t expect a name like that from one of ours. An EBI agent trying badly to fit in, however...” A third voice piped up. “Now wait just a minute!” Mr. Bubblegum spoke up as the mob started turning against him. “Just because the name I chose isn’t to your liking doesn’t mean that...” He didn’t get to finish his sentence as a single pistol shot rang through the room. *** Young bard has been lynched. 6. Welcome to Mid-Range game 40! It takes place about five years before the events of Skyward. A group of Disputers have decided it is time to change the Defiant culture with a little defiance of their own. Rules doc, for better formatting Alignments: Defiant Defense Force - Your job is normally to aid in the effort of battling Krell, but a new threat has risen in the cavern depths that demands your attention. A small number of Disputers - an eccentric counter-culture movement - aim to cripple the DDF. You must stop them before it threatens the survival of the entire Defiant League. The DDF wins when all the Disputers have been arrested or killed. Disputers - Defiant culture has gone too far. The jingoistic teachings are indoctrinating the citizens, and often leading them straight to their deaths. You are members of the DDF who are tired of seeing your friends killed because they feel it is their obligation. While you understand and sympathize with the fight against the Krell, you believe there is a better way. You believe now is the time to start the change and stop the hero-worship of the DDF and First Citizens. The Disputers win when they reach parity with, or out number the DDF members. The Disputers have access to a kill every cycle. Any member can use their role action to submit the kill. General Rules: 48-hour cycles, day/night combined No vote minimum to make an arrest PMs are closed, unless player possesses a radio To create a PM, message the GM with the target. 7. I don't mean Elsecallers, I mean any one master of any one other magical art. This may be assumed, but in a fight between a Mistborn with a good stocking of vials filled with every metal, and literally anything else, I'm probably going to have to put my money on the Mistborn. There are a lot of reasons for this. The first is the sheer versatility of their powers. They can push and pull on emotions, metals, time, and enhance their senses and physical abilities. They can't heal like a Knight Radiant or Feruchemist, they aren't immortal like an Awakener of the 5th heightening, but I mean geez. The number of things they can do is pretty astounding. The second reason is Duralamin, in conjunction of all of those abilities. Duralamin and Steel can push even Hemalurgic Spikes embedded within a body, which, to me, means a Duralamin enhanced Steel push can potentially push on Shardplate/blades. They can take literal control of almost anything with enough Hemalurgic Spikes embedded in them. Heck, that would be a great way to gain minions. Spike them three times each, and then override their minds. Not to mention a Duralamin enhanced Pewter flare could potentially let them break Shardplate. I mean, it let Vin explode some guy's head with a head-butt. The last reason I'm going to go in to is Chromium. Burning Chromium allows you to drain Investiture. All kinds of Investiture. Leacher Mistings can burn Chromium. So can Mistborn. So on top of all the abilities I mentioned above, a Mistborn against ANY of the other kinds of magic will win. Pretty much period. Because they'll just drain the person's power, and then punch them in the face. I suppose they'd have to touch them first, but they can burn Copper, hiding their power from others who can sense them, and there would be no visible indication of them using it, like Stormlight or the bending of light around an Awakener. I suppose an Awakener of the 10th heightening could cause some damage, as most of their power is ranged. But then, no, because the Mistborn could just use Chromium to leach the Breath from any Awakened object that touches them, and once they touch the Awakener, they'd leach the rest of their power. So yeah. Mistborn for the win. Out of all of them, I pick Mistborn. Or a Chromium Compounding Twinborn. Insta-win against any enemy, plus infinite Fortune? Check, please! Does anyone know of anything that could take on a Mistborn with a good supply of metals?

  8. Hello, A friend strongly suggested I start reading Brandon Sanderson and said: "read Way of Kings"; which I did (and enjoyed a lot), then moved to Words of Radiance (90% atm) Checking out what to read next I found various "Reading Order" lists, and in all of them "Stormlight Archive" is in the second half. So my question is.. Did I start the wrong way with the Cosmere universe? What's the "definitive" reading order list, and how do I get back on track after finishing "Words of Radiance"? Several lists (and apparently I can't post links) make me think I'm in a good place as "Way of Kings" -> "Words of Radiance" is listed as a possible/recommended reading order start. So, what do I read next and in what order? Thanks

  9. Ok so I think I figured out how FTL travel would work via allomancy. Maybe someone else has already figured it out , so it's not novel but eh. Now I don't think it's actually travels faster than light. It might not even travel at light speed. At near light speed or maybe even half of light speed. So now we know that as a spacecraft reachs light speed. Time slows down for the person inside the craft. Hours for him would translate to centuries on the outside. This offers the problem. So suppose the craft creates an anchored bendalloy bubble . This bubble would slow down outside time to match the craft time and therefore negate the original time dilation. This could however lead to time moving very quickly within the craft and the person experiencing yrs of time go by. Not ideal . This is where cadmium comes into the picture. Suppose you had a smaller cadmium bubble in the cockpit to cancel out the bendalloy bubble . The bendalloy bubble would still work at the other parts of the craft. But the cockpit would experience normal time dilation. So the cockpit of the craft would experience a few hours or less , whereas the rest of the craft would experience yrs or centuries. Or alternatively , u could have a no of smaller bendalloy bubbles cover the craft sans the cockpit. I guess u could make the cockpit magnetically evitate or use A-Steel to make it levitate inside a chamber within the ship so that there is no wierd friction effects at the border of the time bubbles. This way , it would seem like instantaneous travel to both the traveller and the outside world. The journey would still be at near light speeds and take yrs ,decades or centuries objectively. But the time dilation would make it look instantaneous. It's near light travel transformed into faster than light via hacking time. So whatchu think ?

  10. I was bored, and, like any normal person would, I decided to make my own, non-canon, hypothetical "quadrant" to add to the three Metallic Arts. I used real metals and alloys of those real metals (including the infamous silver), but these effects could easily be Lerasium alloys' effects instead, if you want them to be more canon. 2 of them would be Physical (Cobalt and Nixium, likely would be alloys of Lerasium and iron/steel), and 2 would be Enhancement (Silver and Argentum, would likely be alloys of aluminum and duralumin). I also have a nice little minimalist chart of these 4 set up, just for the fun of it, and for practicing graphic design for later. I'll elaborate on the brief descriptions of the powers in each of the segments of that chart here. - The quadrant itself is the Mystic metals category. It's a nice catch-all term for the somewhat disparate abilities of the metals, without just being "hybrid" again like Feruchemy's hybrid quadrant. - The Mystic Allomantic metals, as mentioned above, are 2 Physical effects and 2 Enhancement effects. Cobalt/Nixium's effects work by altering the overall velocity of a metallic object within reach. Nixium Pushes the metals, adding to their current velocity. However, like Steel, the Pushes are equal and opposite reactions on the Allomancer as well, as if they themselves were Pushing in the same direction that Nixium is adding the velocity in. So to accelerate an object upwards, the Allomancer will be pushed downwards equally in exchange. - Likewise, Cobalt Pulls on metals, reducing their current velocity, including the inevitable pull of gravity, allowing an allomancer to produce hovering footholds with which to leap between. As with Nixium, Cobalt transfers force to the allomancer, meaning that the taken velocity is added to theirs. This results in the allomancer feeling an increased gravitational pull when stopping a metal object from falling, based on the mass of the object being anchored. - Ahh, Silver, silver, silver... A tricky metal to be sure, and quirky enough to explain why it was (and, is) considered Allomantically Inert by all metalborn. Silver works by channeling its power into the "floodgates" of other metals' power, flowing into and through the Allomancer via their other burning metals. When burned by itself, this effect enters a feedback loop of constricting its own power, which induces a nauseating feeling that is almost completely indistinguishable from the sickness of burning a non-allomantic metal or impure alloy. Burning silver and Duralumin amplifies this issue, as the Silver constricts both the duralumin and itself, while the duralumin forces the Silver to expend itself at astronomical rates, causing the silver constriction to intensify to the point where no power can flow, releasing a huge amount of pent-up allomantic power when the constriction wears off, sickening the allomancer deeply, even killing them. Flaring silver and duralumin will kill an allomancer foolish enough to try it. When properly employed, Silver reduces the power output per gram of metal, which may seem purely negative as Aluminum does, but it comes with the added benefit of making the allomancer's metal resources more difficult to Leech or Nicroburst away, keeping them safe from harm while you have Silver to burn. -Argentum, then, is the opposite. It uses the influx of power from Preservation to widen the "floodgates" of other metals burned alongside it. It enhances the power output per gram of metal, which pairs nicely with Duralumin, giving you a further multiplication on power received per second. It also allows you to be a bit more subtle with your burn rate, keeping a low burn while still getting a fair bit of power out of the metals. As you might guess, Argentum-boosted metals are easier to Leech or Nicroburst away. As well, Argentum Savants are not terribly uncommon among Argentum allomancers, due to the fact that by burning Argentum alone, you can have a positive feedback loop of increasing power flowing through via Argentum widening its own "floodgates" over and over. Benefits of Argentum Savantism include a generally improved power output per gram of metal in all metals that the Savant can burn, and an improved ability to control your metals' burn rates. Drawbacks include an addiction-like dependence on Argentum allomancy, as well as a particular vulnerability to being Nicrobursted. Some speculate that the Argentum Allomancer welcomes the rush of power from a Nicroburst on a subconscious level, being familiarized with it from Argentum Allomancy, though this is unconfirmed. - The Mystic Feruchemical metals, then, are quite fun. Cobalt feruchemy is my personal favorite, as it allows the feruchemist to shrink or grow, like ant-man. Cobaltminds are often worn as bracelets at normal size, rings at large size, and a belt at small size, with their standard "big" and "small" sizes being dependent on when the Cobaltmind fits as such. Cobalt Feruchemy also strengthens the body to prevent it from collapsing at larger sizes from the Square-Cube Law, and to allow mobility even at such sizes, much like how Iron feruchemy strengthens the body to allow movement at great weights. - Nixium Feruchemy is rather odd, as it stores Ionic Energy. Fire, Electricity, both can be stored in Nixiumminds, allowing a Nixium feruchemist to quench flames or deplete batteries and charge their metalminds with that type of energy. One Nixiummind cannot store both fire and electrical energy in it at a time, but multiple Nixiumminds can be employed by a Nixium feruchemist to circumvent this. When tapping, the Nixium Feruchemist can direct the stored energy out of their body, typically through the hands, casting lightning bolts or spouts of flame. It's one of the most visually stunning feruchemical powers, to be sure. The Feruchemist is also protected from electrocuting or burning themselves when tapping. - Silver feruchemy stores Light from a small radius around a feruchemist, typically close to their skin, though further out as they store more aggressively. In an enclosed room with a large amount of uncharged silver, a feruchemist can darken the whole room to pitch-black for some time. Tapping Silver causes the Feruchemist to glow, illuminating the area around them. They are also not blinded by the light emitted from their Silver feruchemy, though others can be, making a quick, aggressive tapping of Silver an effective flashbang, of sorts, disorienting foes. (side note: this unintentionally made a pun of Silver-light. I couldn't pass this up after I realized that.) - Argentum Feruchemy stores Sound, a fitting counterpart to Silver. When storing, the feruchemist and his/her immediate surroundings become muted, with the area affected increasing as they store more aggressively. When tapping, sounds produced by the feruchemist become amplified, moreso the more they tap. With enough stored Sound, the feruchemist can create dangerously loud sounds, which is of particular effect against Tineyes or Windwhispers. The feruchemist is also strengthened to be able to withstand the loud noises they produce, unable to deafen themselves. - Cobalt Hemalurgy steals Mystic Allomantic powers. Pretty simple, just like any other allomancy-stealing spike. - Nixium Hemalurgy steals Mystic Feruchemical Powers, which functions just as expected. - Silver Hemalurgy steals Spiritual Fortitude, which is somewhat complex. A spike will enhance the "can't push/pull on metals inside someone" effect, will reinforce the user against Emotional allomantic possession, and even increases the spike threshold for Shardic possession by a net gain of 1 for every silver spike (of average strength). A Silver Kandra Blessing would make them immune to Emotional allomantic possession, and almost fully immune to Shardic possession, in theory being more trouble than it's worth, requiring too much concentration to break through (if we're talking about Ruin trying to control an army of Kandra, Koloss, and Inquisitors, which, isn't likely to happen again. But a Silver Kandra COULD resist Harmony, if they tried hard enough, though that is in part due to his conflicting Intents, rather than the sheer strength of Silver. - Argentum Hemalurgy Steals Physical Immunity, which is to say, potency of your Immune System, and liver. Diseases, and poisons, are reduced in effectiveness against someone with a Nixium spike. So, what do you guys think? These WOULD be more logical as godmetal alloys, i admit, but the idea was too fun to pass up to stave off boredom.

  11. The Witherlord floated in the Shadow, hovering in the near-invisible twilight between the pools of darkness littered throughout reality. Nothing happened here. It was a place for travel, no more. But something was about to happen here now. And it was for that reason that, suddenly, the Witherlord spoke up. "I know you're there, you know," he said. "I can feel you. Watching me." Silence. "Don't try and hide yourself from me. It won't work." Still, silence. "We need to talk, and you know it. Putting it off won't change anything." A long breath of wind that could have been a sigh whispered through the Witherlord's ears. "What," said Fate. "have you come to wish for, child?" "To wish for?" The Witherlord scoffed at the seemingly-empty air. "I did not come here to wish. You owe me a debt, Fate, and I've come to collect." "I recall no such-" "Don't lie to me." Fate fell silent for a long moment. "Very well," he said at last. "What is it that you want?" The Witherlord smiled a cruel smile, lost in the empty darkness. "Revenge."

I've been a Sanderson fan for about 8 years now. My first exposure to him was when I was reading the Wheel of Time series. While the series itself was really good (and my first real foray into epic fantasy) when Brandon Sanderson took over the last several books the series went to a whole other level. After that, the rest is history. I have read the vast majority of the Cosmere and his non-Cosmere works. I haven't gotten into Alcatraz. I heard it's a solid series but I had moved on mostly from YA by the point I learned about it. I also haven't read Whitesands. I imagine I could find a whole thread about peoples feelings on it (I've heard mixed reviews myself). I'm excited to be here and, hopefully, you will hear more about me!

In the past it's been my escape, and I seldom have a chance to even pick up a good book for a few moments anymore. I've had to pause my progress on Hero of Ages, and I really miss reading in general, but especially Sanderson. But that's all good and fine, I'm prioritizing, and I hope to find more time to read this summer. So, partially because I want to remain active on the Shard, but also genuinely to ask a question I'm posting this. Once I finally finish Hero of Ages, I'm planning to read Warbreaker before I continue on to Words of Radiance. I can figure out a decent order, however I'd like some advice on where to fit in Shadows for Silence--I know it's a short read, so maybe that'd be good for when I am still busy. I know Threnody is a less significant shardworld, so I was wondering if anyone had input on where to fit it in with my (slow) Cosmere reading. Thanks for keeping the Shard alive, I'm looking forward to Binge Reading again when I get the chance and hopefully I can keep up with the Cosmere better next year, since I've actually only gotten to a couple books as of yet.

  15. we don't have any hard data on it, as the full extent of the continent is unknown. however, the scale of the map tells us that the whole basin is around 400 miles in diameter, which gives us an area of roughly 300000 square kilometers. roughly the size of italy or germany, or half the size of texas. a size much lower than that of a full continent. we can get some good comparison if we assume that the rest of the continent was unchanged over the time of the final empire (which seems likely). Because if you compare the maps of the elendel basin and of the final empire, you may notice that a bit of coastline is the same: the peninsula of Bilming is identical to the peninsula west of mount Doriel in the final empire; the rest of the coastline matches, for all of the map. from this, you can get a good idea of how the basin fits over the rest of the continent. I made a superposition of the two maps

  18. let me just stop you here. in our real world we didn't have shards messing around, and yet we didn't have much peace either. on the other hand, peace is not necessarily good for progress. some speculate that europe was more advanced at the beginning of the discovery age exactly because it had one millennia of almost constant warfare, where everyone was forced to innovate or succumb, while in other continents a big monolitic empire formed and ensured peace, but the ruling class didn't have many reasons to try and change things. Another thing to account is that the speed of progress can be highly variable. We don't know what directs it. we only have one world to observe, and cannot know how it could go in other places. But we know that even in our world, different geographical areas have experienced periods of flourishing and periods of stagnation. the rate of technological innovation has been anything but constant or predictable so, while there is certainly the possibility that some non-shardworld has some advanced civilization on it, there is also no guarantee, and no way to surmise

It's pretty much how I pictured the sword even before I found the WoB where he mentioned liking FFX a whole lot.

Adrian really gets comfortable on the back end of it and takes it to some amazing places. I will be rereading it at some future point. The Malazan comparison is very apt. Without to much info bks 1-4 are most certainly act 1. I find most complaints start at bk 2(loved it myself) with bk 3 a close 2nd. Thankfully if you are having trouble at that point bks 3&4 are very short. 5-10 are door stoppers.

The slightest push could unravel them was the impression I am getting. I think that now that Spensa revealed to the Kitsen the hyperdrive secret, that the humans will also reveal it to other races, to anyone that will listen. In order to create a civil war in the superiority and perhaps get allies themselves. I do wonder about what these old wars were really about. Did humans really try and conquer for empires sake, or were there other reasons for war? History is written by the victors after all. It does seem strange humans ever lost their wars against such incompetent foes. And the vanished earth strikes me as a possible chekovs gun.

The Parshendi have a huge focus on music with the rhythms and things right? Well, music is full of patterns. Once you play or sing for a while, you find patterns that repeat across all sorts of songs and pieces. For example, the I-IV-V-IV chord progression in literally every song ever. Gradually, you learn to pick up on these patterns and anticipate them. My point is, a background in music could make the parshmen very good at noticing patterns, which are a huge thing in language. They could also just have really good flashcards.

On it you put a blue note with a picture of Cap Moroni , a purple note with a picture of Szeth, a red note with a picture of the Hulk, a green note with a picture of you, and an orange note with a picture of Adolin. Now you have a super soldier with the conviction of Captain Moroni, the obedience of Szeth, strength of the Hulk, and looks like you with better fashion sense. Neckties

And Brandon agrees: "While the scope of an electrum shadow is very limited, it could be useful in many situations. Like if you were playing tennis, you’d be able to look at your shadow and tell if you managed to hit the ball or not, and adjust accordingly. That would still take a lot of practice to master, but it could be very effective." That's not quite the same as burning atium, but a skilled Electrum burner could learn to optimize the results of their own actions based on potential outcomes (though not to predict/react to someone else's future actions).

  36. Ash's attention, already spread so thin, broke when the strange fairy took off. She couldn't let her run away. The unanswered questions wouldn't kill her, but she hated unsolved puzzles. They felt like failure, and Ash did not fail. "Stay right there," she said to Coyote and his friend. Ash took off after the fairy, waving her down. "Wait!!!"

  37. My my, Ash thought to herself, that is a lot to handle. Lady Braithwope. With debts to pay to some mysterious secret society. Goodness. That was something to think about. Not that she had any proof. She wasn't even sure that she could use it even if she did. People like that were hard to get to. Besides, who knew what it would do poor Ella. Ash was filing that information away for later when a thump sounded from the direction of the fairy. She felt another magical wrongness and figured it was probably the small man that had ran into the strange girl. Goodness. How many ridiculously powerful people could she run into in one day? To be frank, it was getting a little overpowering. Magic had a certain feel to it. Ash couldn't quite describe it. It lulled you to sleep at the same time it energised you. It filled sounds like newly fallen snow and sharpened colors. Just being near Coyote was starting to affect her senses. Coyote's power has a certain feel. Yes it was wrong, but it was something else as well. It felt dry like a desert though she swore that she could almost smell the world after rain. It felt like long days and bright nights without the light pollution of the city. It felt wild and restrained at the same time. "Do you know these two?" Ash asked Coyote.

  38. "No, I don't believe anyone is home," Ash replied. "I stood out here for forever and no one came. What buisness do you have with Lady Braithwope?" Lady Braithwope had recently become very important in Capital society and politics. It was very suspicious that these two were wanting to speak to her. Did this mean that the Lady had magic to owe for her new influence? Interesting. Very interesting. Perhaps if Ash could prove something was afoot with the Braithwope's new financial gain, she could get out of inviting them to the ball. The two girls of the household were petty and manipulative, and deserved no chance at winning Charles's hand in marriage. Ash had a particular dislike of them, though she was quite fond of their half sister, Ella. Ella was of a pretty sort, with blonde hair and green eyes. She was also kind hearted and an excellent cook, though her real passion lied in seeing. Ash had grown up with Ella as the only one Ash could find refuge in at the many balls and dinner parties she had to go to (besides Charles, but he was always to busy for her). However, Ella's father had remarried, and Ella's presence anywhere had stopped. Ash had even tried to see her at her own home, but was quickly turned away. It was odd and worrying. One of the only reasons Ash had mustered up the motivation to go out and meet with the Braithwopes was to see if Ella was there. Pity. Ash would always try again though. She wasn't one to give up easily on a friend.

  39. "Why hello, Coyote. My name is Ash," she said, giving him the same courtesy he had given her in only offering his first name. Not even his true name at that. Rude. Still, Ash wasn't willing to risk lying to him and his buddy. That feeling of wrongness spoke of power in his blood. Power she wasn't going to cross without a real reason. Ash wondered if Coyote could feel her as well, but she didn't think so. She wasn't nearly powerful enough to warrant attention. After all, she could hardly tell lies from the Truth, and even then she could only do the fundamentals (age, name, true desires and whatnot). She's was much better at transfiguration magic and nine out of ten times that had carried her through. She should have payed more attention in that class.

  40. Ash waited uncomfortably at the door and considered ringing the bell for a third time. No they probably weren't home. Still, families like this usually had at least one butler if not a full staff. She turned around, wondering if she should just walk away. She could invite them tomorrow and she still had so much more to do to prepare for the ball... Just then she noticed two people in the street. That wasn't the odd part. This street, though not particularly busy, did have some traffic. No there was something wrong about these two, though Ash couldn't put the finger on it. They both stared at her, and didn't look away when she noticed them. Ash stared right back and walked over to the two figures. She stuck or her hand to the more authoritative-looking one and introduced herself. Ash was looking forward to solving this new mystery. Things have been so boring after she's had to devote herself to her final exam.

  41. Exactly. And this fits in with the whole "they aren't aware but Bavadin always is" WoB Bavadins mind isn't infinite like her power, so she creates these Avatars with some form of consciousness, so instead of having to actually move or focus her Nexus somewhere else which would take a lot of energy or whatever;she can just jump into or focus on that Avatar instantly because they are already there and they are a part of her. So with these Avatars in place she can tinker around and see what going on with all these world that she's not actually on, but she is, in a way.

  42. I think Autonomy is creating avatars kinda like Eternal Khol said, shes spreading out her awareness into the Cosmere. The Shards all have infinite power, but the vessels minds are finite so they cant use all of infinity. What if Autonomy is spreading out her awareness to be able to reach more of that infinite power she knows she has. But cant reach.

  43. I wouldn't call the Avatars splinters. They're close but... A Splinter to me, is when a Shard willingly or unwillingly gives up some of their power. Usually to create something with it.(spren, seons, returned, etc...) Now, a shard still has some control over that splinter, but not as much now that it's its "own" being But with an Avatar, its like Autonomy isn't separating that power from herself.it's still part of her being... just not... It's like with spren. I'll uses Honorspren as an example. So Honorspren are just a chunk of Honor's Investiture that after laying around for so long gains Sentience or Sapience. They still have a deep connection to Honor because they are made from a chunk of his power but their thoughts and actions aren't tied to the Vessel of the Shard. With an Avatar, their mind is directly tied to the Vessel of the Shard. WoB says that if a Avatar formed on its own(which is possible) the Vessel would be aware of it. There's no way they couldn't be. Also that "The avatars aren't necessarily aware but Bavadin always is." so I think what Bavadin is doing is finding pools of her power and giving them some semblance of a mind(enough to be somewhat aware but not enough to be an individual), so that while they aren't really aware, and can't do much, Bavadin is always aware and with these Avatars already in place she is able to further stretch her mind and find out what's happening in different places in the cosmere. as for the different personalities, I think each one has some aspect of Bavadin in them

  44. Man, all this stuff seems so contradictory. Gavilar: "I'll bring back the Parsh gods. It will save your people. I'm being selfless." Eshonai: "Bad idea." Amaram: "We're actually doing this to force the Heralds out of hiding." Nale: "Dude I'm right here." Gavilar: "Actually, we're doing this because I nEeD UnItY and threats are effective." Amaram: "Yeah, and it'll bring back Vorinism." Gavilar: "That's not what I said. But it'll bring back the Radiants, so...sure." Nale: "Ishar is NOT okay with that. But he's also not okay with returning the Parsh gods, so...why am I here?" Gavilar: "What do you suppose we do? Stormdaddy tells me we're doomed." Kalak: "Can we run away? Did that once with our last planet and it worked out for millennia." Nale: "The Wheel of Time turns...wait, wrong series." Gavilar: "Ohh, secrets I can exploit...how do we open a passage to another planet?" [REDACTED] Gavilar: "Look, I got this voidspren." Nale: "I'm not sure why I'm okay with this. But we need to go deeper." Amaram: "What's that got to do with HoNoR?" Gavilar: "Glad we're all on the same page." Szeth: "...did I miss a meeting?"

  46. I think the most redeeming aspect of Jasnah is she is aware of her faults and would probably agree with most of your assessment. I did find that her treatment if Shallan bugged me, but it was more from the standpoint if I understood her approach to be completely wrong than I felt she was being completely unreasonable all the time. For instance, the scribe example, Jasnah didn't assign it to her because she thought it was beneath either of them, but because she thought Shallan could grow from the experience. Jasnah does not view scribing as below her, but as a useful task and something Shallan can grow from doing And she does have a point, as Shallan was not able to pay attention and complete the task. You have to be able to do the basics before you can move up in ranks, and taking notes in a meeting is something she'd need to be able to do to become a scholar. In the confrontation about it, Jasnah makes an effort to soften her normally harsh demeanor. She also makes an effort to make amends for disappearing and admits fault for dismissing Shallan's drawing talents earlier, which is a huge out of character step for Jasnah to take. Jasnah also understands that she is not able to provide the proper instruction to Shallan to grow, and it frustrates her, and she struggles to keep that frustration from bubbling over into Shallan. That takes a certain amount of self-awareness that I have a lot of respect for: Her exchange with Ivory shows that her actions are not out of a list for control or out of a superiority complex, but because she truly is trying her best to figure out the best course of action to give Shallan a chance at the future her potential promises. In some ways, Shallan is also responsible for their situation. She is unwilling to commit to either becoming Jasnah's ward again or severing the relationship. When Shallan brings it up again, it's as a question if they can call it finished, ignoring Jasnah's lessons that she should be confident and poised and maintain control. Instead, she flits between being her Ward and rebelling, unwilling to choose either, which is exactly what Jasnah is concerned about: Shallan is letting her impulses control her. Had Shallan approached Jasnah and commanded her situation, stating that given their experiences it would be prudent to reexamine their relationship and the power dynamic between them, Jasnah would respect that and would prove Jasnah didn't need to worry. Jasnah's exchange with Amaram parallels Shallan's earlier exchange with Janala. I think that Jasnah is mostly worried that she sees herself in Shallan and that's part of why she's so harsh with her. She doesn't want Shallan to push people away in the same fashion, especially seeing that Shallan is already more sociable, so she tries extra hard to stamp out that same sort of intellectual elitism that pushes people away. The drive to stop people from making your own mistakes can make you come across especially harsh as well.
