  1. When you’re at a college-class-booth-thing for one class period and one of the people running a booth looks at your shirt and goes “You’ve got Szeth on your shirt!” I was very happy to have found a wild Sanderfan

  2. Hi all, this is my first ever forum post, glad to meet you all! Intro As the title suggests I believe that Willshapers are the ones that create shardplate for the Radiants, or at least I believe my theory is pretty solid. I've been thinking alot about the Willshapers lately and Kalak and from the brief descriptions we have, they seem to appear as very finicky tinkerers. So I basically picture Kalak as the Iron Man of the Heralds who designed the shardplates(maybe some 'Honorplate'). There has also been alot of speculation that shardplate is comprised of subspren and comments from Brandon Sanderson's Q & As and subspren appearing around certain characters(Dalinar, Kaladin & Jasnah) point to this. I also believe that Bondsmiths might play a part in this process, I get more into that later on. How I think it works Since the subspren aren't able to make nahel bonds, therefore only able to manifest in the physical realm for a brief period of time. I think these spren are so drawn to the Radiants and their increasing connection to their sapient cousins, but can't bound because of the laws in place. So Kalak, being the inquisitive airhead decides that if they have shardweapons why not make shardarmor from other spren since Radiants can only have one bond per sapient spren. I imagine that in order to make this happen, the Willshaper will blend their surges together like how Dalinar blended Cohesion and Adhesion to repair the ruins in Thaylen City and somehow bring the spren from Shadesmar into the Physical Realm and use Cohesion to reshape them into shardplate(perhaps involving some sort of Godmetal, not too sure I'm not all that knowledgeable on that topic). Now where does the Bondsmith come in? Well that's simple, they use Spiritual Adhesion to identity key the Plate to the Radiant. I also think maybe another way to look at it is that perhaps a Bondmsith would open a perpendicularity that might affect the process in a way or something? Here is further evidence to back my theory(some speculation): Dalinar was capable of using 'Spiritual Adhesion' to communicate with others of different languages. It would lend credence to their Order's name, perhaps how they even got it like Windrunners and Skybreakers are best known for their flight abilities but can do so much more. The radiants takes the subspren(Will) and shape it into the best form for the knight(Shaper) There's been a convenient lack of information on the Order and their Herald and I'm sure we all know our favourite author has a penchant for leaving omitting delicious information for the sake of storytelling. We know Venli is probably on her way to become one and how she interacts with Dalinar's Radiants could be a big thing in the fourth Stormlight book. In Taln's ramblings about the latest Desolation, he talks about training and leading armies, Jezrien teaching men leadership and Kalak teaching them to smith Bronze. Kalak was probably the Herald of Craftsmanship and this translated to his Order as well. Anyways let me know what you guys think, I'm not that knowledgeable on the magic system in Stormlight, so technical and complex but I still love it. Let me know what I got wrong, or missed out. Cheers!!!

  3. From the album: The Longest Thread (Misadventures)

I did it. I figured out proportions. I'm in awe. This was my first test to try a system for it and needless to say it worked and I am so flippin' proud of it. This drawing is also cool because Star is wearing the blouse she did when this happened. What an iconic moment, am I right? And finally this drawing is just really cool 'cause I was actually able to give Star the shape she should have. I was originally not going to post this, but it just turned out so well and it makes me so happy.

  4. Do you guys think there among the 16 shards there's a subgroup of them that are considered Passion shards? This WoB [Apparently I can't link the Arcanum] made me think that maybe passion is some sort of shared attribute among some "subtype" among the shards. I don't know how what the Stormfather said about Odium not having a monopoly on passion fits here, since Honor had it but then apparently lost it. Maybe the phrase "I am what makes men men" when labeling himself as Passion is important here too? Since shards can't really be considered human anymore could Passion be something keeping them from fully becoming their intent? I don't think so since Ruin seemed pretty far lost in his intent, but who knows. WoB in question Valhalla Ruin and Odium, they both talked about their passion, and it was italicized both times. Would any other Shards talk about passion in that same italicized way? Brandon Sanderson Yes they would. Valhalla Would any of them not talk about it that way? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Excellent, good questions.

  5. Okay folks! Time to get cracking! 7 players left, I'm assuming 3 elims and 4 villagers. I assume we can trust Xino and their predictions, so I am going to vote on Araris. If you are village, please join me in this vote. We can only arrest one elim per cycle, so we need to be united in who we choose. We have it on very good confidence that both Araris and Abstrucity are elims so lets focus on that instead of becoming distracted with finding the others. We can deliberate that to our hearts content, but I believe it would be in our best interest to keep our votes focused. With some clever play the village can still win. Guns need to be bought, vote manipulation needs to be used, and pressure needs to be kept up. If anyone votes for someone other than Araris or Abstrucity for the next two cycles then I am honestly going to automatically assume that they are the last member of the elim team.

  6. Yeah, unfortunately working overtime and a half (again this semester), I got sick last weekend/early this week and that killed a lot of time. I maybe could get it done by Sunday but I have a lot of other work to do as well. But! It will be on SA4 predictions and should be a larger episode than usual.

  15. Adding onto my fourth-wall-breaking story ideas ~ The core characters, working under the theory that they’re in a story, go Okay, so the protagonists always survive the big battles, right? And they figure out ways to win partway through. If we just trust in ourselves or whatever our powers will evolve and we’ll find some new ability that saves the day. They head into some plot-important fight with almost no preparation, assuming they’ll win just because the protagonists always win. They lose. They lose so hard. The antagonists utterly destroy any semblance of a plan they did have, no new power manifests to save them, there is no dues ex machina person swooping in, and someone dies. Maybe more than one someone. They barely make it out, and it’s not because of their Special Status, it’s because one of the minor characters had an escape plan and through sheer luck. They don’t ever bank on winning again. They learn that being the main characters doesn’t mean they automatically get what they want. They know, after this, that they have to actually earn victory. Next time, they make a real plan.

  17. I doubt this theory, simply because it seems too complicated, and because it uses the surges in ways we haven't seen were possible. Another thing is, if what you say were true, wouldn't it also work to just use any combination of radiants that have these surges? How would transportation make a spren manifest in the physical realm? We haven't seen it used in that way before. Also, it's hard to use investiture on invested things. It would be very hard to shape the plate in the way you suggest. Another aspect you should consider is the narrative one. The moment we see shardplate will be dramatic and sudden, in order to maximize the payoff. That means a scene alike to Kaladin summoning Syl as a blade for the first time. Having it be a long and meticulous process won't work, because it's not dramatic enough.

  18. I was looking for something like this for a while but ended up using Tiddlywiki instead. I personally found it way more intuitive, and visually appealing. I also liked the fact that it is all stored in a single HTML file and can be opened and edited from any device that can open a web page. It also has the functionality to work directly from google drive, so I can open and edit it from any device without having to carry it around on a flash drive. I personally write it as if I'm explaining it to someone. I try to be as specific as possible and use simple language to describe things. This is for two reasons: One is if I died unexpectedly, anyone could read it and understand it not just someone who already knows the context. The second reason is I feel that the better I can explain something in simple clear language, the better I myself understand it. And the better I understand it, the better I can write about it. Edit: Sorry about the double post, but I couldn't figure out how to add a quote to my previous one by editing it.

  19. "Don't feel like talking, eh?" Clever grinned into his radio. "We'll let our destructors do the talking then!" "Gravstopper flight, you are clear to ascend." a female voice said over the radio. "Penguin, you are on deck." We were up next. Clever felt the normal adrenaline bubble up. It still blew his mind whenever he got to fly and what better way to prove dominance in the sky than by outflying a bunch of enemies in a debris field? He watched as Gravstopper flight called out role. After each of the nine radio'd their flightleader, they took off at what looked like mach 3. Clearly they weren't in much of a hurry. After what seemed like a lot longer than it probably was, the air traffic control tower called out their flight and Clever shot up into the air. Six people had been assigned to Penguin flight. (not Clever's idea for the name, but what can you do when you're the last one to get to Alta?). He had flown with two of them before including his current filghtmate, but back then they had been Krellbuster Flight. That was disbanded after Cobb and Clever had both left. Only the other two stayed at alta. Everyone else quit or had already died. He heard his flight leader call for him and he smiled again as he called back "Penguin 5, call sign PeaceKeeper ready and eager!" His wing mate followed suit and at last they were off. --------------------------------------------------------- So.... How's it going? -- I'm going to do some analysis to see who could feasably get a gun, but I won't put it in the thread unless it becomes really relevant (or if I get bored enough). -- I reallized I forgot to comment on this. I appreciate receiving -- @Zillah, It might be time to start lynching randomly. Would you care to vote for someone? I don't even care if it's me. -- Elkanah makes a great point here. I think we should all trust Elkanah. -- I would never trust myself! If you are ever wondering if something in a post I make is a lie it probably is. I just think I'm a villager. -- @StrikerEZ, StrikerEZ, StrikerEZ, StrikerEZ, StrikerEZ @StrikerEZ -- Please do! I think you are one of the lynch pins along with me that determines some alignments. -- YAY! While I'm glad to be alive, I wish the lynch trains on me had lasted a little longer. I'd like to have seen who else would have jumped on. -- @Fifth Scholar is probably going to ninja me, because you are on right now, so I'll be late with my question of what you think will spur discussion, because wild claims and accusations aren't cutting it anymore for me. -- @Abstrusity, Do you wanna build a snowman? Come on, we've got some prey! With krell ships falling from the sky (they all will die) all up there blown away! We used to be code buddies, but now we're not. I wish I could decipher why! Do you wanna build a snowman? In a blizzard of Krell a snowman. Okay, bye. Do you wanna build a snowman? while flying ships through the debris? I think some role playing is overdue, I've even started talking to the enemies! It gets a little lonely when there's no PM's. What am I gonna doooo? Do you wanna build a snowman? It doesn't have to be a snowman. -- @Sart, If you thought this was a vanilla only game, how is it you were role blocked? Does the light line cancel new PM creation? That is the only blockable action a normal villager could start with. Also, if you are empowered, why were you going to suggest that we had a vanilla only game? More interestingly to me, what changed your mind? Because up to that point we only had a claim from TGK to be empowered and I thought he was lying. If you had kept being roleblocked a secret, you could still have suggested that we had only vanillagers, thus hiding your own empowerment. I feel like sharing that you could be roleblocked is not a thing elim!Sart would have done, so it helps my trust of you, but I'm still not sure why you shared it at all. (But I am very happy you did, because now we can have a meaningful discourse in the thread ). -- I'm so sorry if I missed anyone. I don't think I did, but I have been jumping all over between spreadsheets and previous threads, so it might have happened. Please come play some SE with me. This is a really cool game, and I'm very sorry if my irrational play style has made it harder for anyone to engage. -- more to come I'm sure as soon as it isn't double posting or even if it is

  23. I'm nonbinary, my body's 26 but honestly I'm so odd I don't have any idea what that means, or maybe that means I know enough to have no idea what that means? Who knows? Anyway, my obsessions are music, a lot of Brandon writing, the SCP Wiki (if you do not know that place, go there, it will blow your mind), and MUDs/similar games, MOOs, MUSHes, etc. I'm blind, so you can best get my engagement through text or audio, and admittedly I am stereotypically terrible at formatting. I admit I haven't read much Brandon outside of the Cosmere and the end of WoT, once I had absorbed all of that I kind of had to stop reading anything of substantial size for a while. So bit by bit I'm chewing my way through different parts of the SCP Wiki's hubs (the Antimemetics Division is some doom) until I get good series energy again, and then I'm probably going to do it all in one massive run. Even though it's not all one series. I read Stormlight in audio, so now I'm going back and reading it slowly in Braille, there's something really nice about actually being able to see how someone wanted you to perceive the cadence and emphasis of a thing. As much as we can perceive cadence in text, anyway. I'm a mishmash of emotions which is entirely too aware of itself. I have no idea when it is I really started as a concept, and happily have no idea when I'll end. No better or no worse than anything else around me, I just have ideas and the drive to explore others'. Me and a few others are creating an abstract, concept Stormlight playlist, best listened to shuffled. When I initially thought of writing this, for over a month, all I could think of for my introduction were songs, most of the ones I put here are the ones I would have chosen. Which probably tells you everything you need to know about me, honestly lol. Highlights, just titles because I can't links yet. I originally tried to do that, oops. This is so Oathbringer to me, Stormlight and Mistborn, and, where we are, the whole universe. Who, at some point, doesn't know this? And doesn't it always lead to either the best or the most disastrous actions? Thrice - The Dark "Over town, the flags are up, every soul says they're fighting the good fight, paradox too plain to see, but only when the well runs dry..." Blanco White - On the Other Side All of the lyrics of this, so much. All of them. But, with an attempt at denoting the cadence lines in some basic way: "Deceiver says, he says, you belong to me, you don't want to breathe the light of the others, fear the light, fear the breath, fear the others for eternity. But I hear them now, and hear the clarity, hear the venom, the venom in, what, you say, inoculated, bless this immunity." Tool - Fear inoculum And every bit of this. I couldn't pick a lyric if I tried. Tool - Pneuma This, to me, is the essential song of transformation. "I choose to live and to lie, kill and give and to die, learn and love and to, do, what it takes to step through." Tool - 46 and 2 Grandbrothers - Long Forgotten Future Manu Delago - Mode 2 Manu Delago - Uplifted This cadence is familiar... I have a feeling it's familiar to Stormlight too. Not because it's familiar to me. But because it's familiar to a concept. Humans do that, too. Not the same way. Not nearly so deeply. But they did, and some do, and it happens. Alexandre Desplat - Courtyard Apocalypse (from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II soundtrack) Global Drum Project, all of it. Dances with Wood and Tars are the tracks on the playlist though 10 years - Writing on the Walls Iamthemorning - Touching II James Newton Howard - Bow and Arrow Ryuichi Sakamoto - Andata Gary Girouard - The Thinker Gary Girouard - Nebula Whitebear - Lost in Vibrations, Pt. 2 Anoushka Shankar - Boat to Nowhere Anoushka Shankar - Crossing the Rubicon Amethystium - Mono No Aware (opening) Bruno Sanfilippo - Pianette Hildur Guðnadóttir - Elevation Slipknot - XIX "There's a story meant to be told, but the door is shut in the cold..." Blanco White - Olalla Coldplay - Politik A Perfect Circle - Feathers Osi and the Jupiter - Baldur Thomas Bergersen - Run Free The Daydream Club - Improv #1 - A Tale of Two Modes Christopher Tin - Haf Gengr Hriðum - "The Storm-Driven Sea" James Newton Howard - My Name is Robert Neville Grandbrothers - Wuppertal Grandbrothers - Naive Rider Grandbrothers - Stutie V Grandbrothers - Newton's Cradle Phil France - Transition Grandbrothers - white Nights Honorable mentions that didn't make it in due to being too specific to other things or not quite lining up the way I wanted them to, or that made it here due to being bits of me that weren't on the playlist. "She took my portrait as well as she could do with someone who seemed to be not there at all..." Josh Ritter - Dreams "He can feel his skin like a prison, like a dying cage he struggles to live inside, he tries to call out but nobody hears him. At the ragged edge of the silence, in the calm that always comes with the violence, sleep inside the heart and the hope of redemption." The October Project - Sunday Morning Yellow Exocat - Demons Within Rise Against - People Live Here Shaman's Harvest - Tusk and Bone So there's a bunch of the things that make up all the varying bits of my existence, the playlist link is going to land wherever those should go once I can post them. I look forward to participating, I've been reading for a bit. I'm quiet until I start talking, and then dear god do I start talking, so if I'm ever too noisy by all means, tell me to shut up for a bit.

  27. Im of two minds on this. On the one hand the three Godspren are by all accounts wildly different, and it would make all kinds of sense for their Oaths to be similarly Unique. On the Other Hand they are building/proving the same general Bond and Surges, so by that logic they should probably follow a common theme. We know form the other Orders we've seen that Oaths can sometimes be wildly individualized (Lightweaver Truths being the most, but the Skybreakers Crusade Ideal etc are equally personal). I tend to suspect it will fall somewhere in the middle, with each Godspren having a very different Perspective on the same general theme, which will likely only make sense in retrospect.

  28. There are two destructor pistols left. My guess is the evil team threw all of their chits together cycle one and the person who sent in the kill that cycle bought the gun in the second cycle. That leaves the other gun from the shop and the bountiful gunner pistol that was dropped by The God King. It is highly unlikely another elim can get a gun this cycle so two of us need to buy the guns out from under them. I expect them to use it immediately while they still have the full compliment of elims, so that moves us down from 6-3 (probs not 5-4) to 3-3 if we mislynch. We are down to the wire and have to get an elim this cycle. Here are cursory thoughts about each player still alive. Kynedath Has flown below the radar this game. I will note this is uncharacteristic of Kynedath. He is usually a lot more close to the center of attention throughout the game. Slight Elim read Zillah's posts have felt off to me, but nothing she has said or done is actually indicative of being an eliminator. Very Slight Elim read Elkanah is definitely playing this game for fun and not optimally. Now he's ready to buckle down and arrest some Disputers. Strong Village read Rathmaskal Contributed a lot more cycle 2 than cycle 1. I don't have a clear picture of where he stands yet, but I'll do a reread to see what I can glean. Neutral read StrikerEZ hasn't posted very much at all. He completely missed Cycle 2. @StrikerEZ, where did you go? I feel like there is something to be gleaned from the day one train and backing off of Striker, but I don't know what it would be. I am confident he isn't an heir, but I don't know that that actually helps us at this point. Very Slight Village read Araris has been a part of activity discussion. Other than that, there hasn't been much to indicate his alignment except his mistrust of me which I think is NAI, but others disagree. Neutral read Xinoehp Is having connectivity issues, but was quite active day 1. I want to believe he is good, but I have no such information. Neutral read Fifth Scholar has some really good posts that fuel discussion for a while after he makes them. I need to go back over them with a finer toothed comb to try to weigh whether I think he's good or bad. Neutral read Abstrusity also isn't clear from anything they've posted whether they are good or bad. I do get a good gut feeling from their posts, but it could be code bias. Very Slight Village read Sart suggested the pass the chit plan, which I will reveal I have gone along with. I wanted people to be able to confirm my actions despite it not being able to prove whether I killed or not. It wasn't going to interfere with my ability to buy things anyway. In fact, I like the idea of sharing more and more as the game goes on. I am especially curious to see what the igneous engineer(s) have found, because time is growing short. Even if it's just the people to whom they sent the anonymous PM's (or if they pretend to have received an anonymous PM). Slight Village read -------------------- I just realized there are ten of us still alive, so we possibly have 2 mislynches left. Even so, it would be best if we evened those odds this cycle because another thing I realized is the elims got at least 15 chits from killing TGK plus up to 50 more between him and Shanerockes. If they organized that cleverly, they might be able to purchase another gun this cycle. Either way they are the only ones who could have purchased the other gun that has disappeared from the market. Worst case scenario they have two kills this cycle and two next cycle making it 7-3; 4-3; 1-3 with mislynches. I'll start with a vote on Kynedath. Can you give us a rundown of who you trust and who you don't? In order from most trusted to least I am at: Striker, Abstrusity, Sart, Fifth Scholar, Xino, Araris, Rathmaskal, Zillah, Kynedath -------------------------------- Alarms sounded. Clever had received word that his ship was airworthy and he was anxious to get into the sky after months on the ground. But why did the Krell have to come so scudding early in the morning? Of course, morning was relative. There was always plenty of light from the skylights. Even so, he had to force himself out of bed as he steeled himself for the battle ahead. After quickly dressing, he ran for the hangar and climbed the high ladder into the Santa Maria. It felt so good to climb back into his own cockpit and he sat back just enjoying the familiar feel of his ship. The debris fall was supposed to be a long ways away so there was still time for collecting his wits and courage on the flight out. He flipped the radio to the private channel to his wingmate [anyone want to join me in the battle?] "Are you still going for the record? I heard nightmare squadron set a new record the other day! 15 confirmed kills and 12 assists!" @anyone

  30. I said on a Stormlight Shardcast way back when about how I think most people would think and act like Moash. I certainly found him relatable, in an uncomfortable way, that I found challenging. I have to deal with my anger about how Kaladin's arc is ending up with, if not forgiveness, then some kind of letting go, in a way that feels unfair. I frequently am annoyed whenever someone claims that Kaladin's anger and hatred is unreasonable - no, it isn't, it's perfectly reasonable. I want to hold onto it, even wallow in it. I get Moash's rage deeply, and that's why I despise it so much. It's the point where I have to grapple with Brandon's personal philosophy the most, the part where it seems clearest to me that this is a book written by someone whose philosophy doesn't 100% align with mine, and also the part where I do the most self-reflection to consider if I do agree with what Brandon is saying about hatred. I don't want to be like Moash, but if I hold onto my rage, is that a guarantee I'm going to end up doing something unforgivable, or must I let go of it to be the kind of person I admire more (ie. Kaladin)?

  31. If you poke around through the other threads in the Events and Signing subforum, you'll often see coordination about who's going to be bringing a recorder to an event to record Brandon's speeches, panels, and signing lines. (Sometimes, the coordination happens through Discord or Reddit, or a lurker just does it without posting about it.) Some of us have actual recording devices; others just use their phone. It's not something official that Brandon's employees do; it's completely fan-organized, so it doesn't happen at every signing. But the next time you're at a signing, take a look at the table Brandon's signing at; you may see someone's recording device. Way back in the day, people who recorded would either transcribe the audio themselves, or they'd post it online via Google Drive or something similar, and others would transcribe in a thread or in a Google Doc. Arcanum (which is still a relatively new website, in the grand scheme of things) was designed to centralize all that; fans can upload their audio directly to the site, and there are pages that make it specifically easy to transcribe one WoB at a time. As to how to know when an event is coming up, someone usually posts a thread about an upcoming event in this subforum. But not always; there's no LTUE 2020 thread, which is the event you're asking about. I think this was a late announcement; at least, I didn't know anything about it until, like, a day before. Brandon has a page on his website where he lists upcoming events, which you can periodically check: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/upcoming-events/. But it's only as good as it's maintained; Brandon will be at a convention in April in California, but I don't see it on that page yet. You can sign up for Brandon's newsletter; you have an option to say where you live, and you'll get emails when Brandon is doing a signing near you. (But I don't live in Utah, so I don't know if one went out for LTUE or not.) But the best way I've found is to follow Brandon on Twitter. (Facebook and Instagram probably work well, too). That's how I eventually saw LTUE, and that's how I saw YALLFEST (which is the event in April). The only best option would be to hack his computer and find his schedule, but if you can do that, I've got a few other favors to ask you.

  33. In-world our characters often speak of Divine Attributes as holdovers of Vorin theology with no other significance. They were supposedly modeled after what ancient peoples considered were the Heralds most notable noble characteristics. However, as the Final Desolation begins in earnest on Roshar people should begin seeing that some of those previously dismissed holdovers have more relevance than was once believed. The Divine Attributes are one of those ancient concepts I believe should regain relevance as the spren return to fulfill that ancient contract. I am of the opinion that the Divine Attributes have a definite and direct relationship with the Oaths a Knight Radiant speaks to solidify the Nahel Bond with their spren. Both of the Attributes are important, although they are applied differently. One involves what the Knight pledges, the other is what the Knight achieves by said pledge. The issue with my theory is of course that although we've seen at least one person from every Knight Radiant order we've only seen the words for half of them. However, I believe that it's a good sample size, especially considering that they are not on the same side of the Double Eye chart. Another issue is that they don't necessarily always map to primary secondary as listed. But I'll lay out the examples of the Oaths we do have and how they map to the attributes. People can then decide for themselves. Bondsmith: Pious/Guiding I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together. “I will take responsibility for what I have done. If I must fall, I will rise each time a better man. ” These Oaths are a guide for how men should live, especially if they are a Knight Radiant and double that if they are Bondsmiths. In adhering to these Oaths a Bondsmith strengthens their connection to God, becoming more pious almost by default. Windrunner: Protecting/Leading I will protect those who cannot protect themselves. I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.-Kaladin This one is much more straightforward. Protection is what they are all about, it's even in the wording. In following these Oaths one becomes a better leader, for the essence of a good leader is one who cares about people, both those they serve and those they command. Note that this isn't the only way to lead, but the Windrunner does imply that this is either the best way or at least the only way that they will accept. Skybreaker: Just/Confident I will put the law before all else. There are other Oaths, they're the only Order for which we have their complete list. But to summarize, they are all about law. Justice. A budding Skybreaker chooses to follow the law, something external to themselves for they do not trust their own interpretation, fearing their own bias. Although they never completely lose this worldview their Oaths are designed towards making that Skybreaker more confident in their interpretation of law. What else is the Ideal of Crusade for if not to test a worldview against a reality and seeing what comes out the other side? Lightweaver: Creative/Honest The only Order that swears only one Ideal and advances on Truths instead, the honesty portion of the Divine attributes is obvious. The creativity portion is implied however. The spren of their order generally chose people who are creative already. As they shine light into the dark corners of their soul they are able to rise to greater heights of creativity, the better they can use the pain they find as fuel for their art. And since they sit on Cultivation's side of the double Eye, the better they grow. Edgedancer: Loving/Healing I will remember those who have been forgotten. I will listen to those who have been ignored. Though traditionally fierce and elegant on the battlefield, Edgedancers are best known for their healing prowess. They do so through acts of love. They love the people who are in need of it, the people for whom love has passed by and by doing so they heal. Even Nale, an insane Immortal, was touched by the healing of an Edgedancer, no awesomeness required. As an Edgedancer progresses they will be better able to heal wounds Stormlight cannot touch because their capacity for love grows with each Oath given. I suspect that the other Orders will follow a similar pattern and we have some indications of this through personality types. Jasnah seems wise, Renarin is Learned or at least has the potential to be, Venli has shown resolve more than once in the narrative and Taln is the most dependable human ever born. However without the words we cannot be 100% sure. There's even some uncertainty with the Orders we do have words for; that list is not complete. But I am more confident in those, using Skybreakers as a guide. I'm certainly willing to discuss places where we agree or disagree.

  34. Something that may bear relevance to the discussion, the spren that make up the Nahel Bond are old but may not have existed prior to the creation of the Knights Radiant. Stormfather and Nightwatcher were present before the arrival of Honor and Cultivation in system, the cousin spren of the KR obviously existed as sapient life inhabited Roshar, but the 9 spren that specifically grant the bond and make up the Orders may not have existed before Ishar made his ultimatum. What if Ishar goes to Honor with his idea to regulate the surgebinders and Honor says cool, we can do that. He takes some Windspren and elevates a few to become Honorspren, creationspren to Cryptics, lifespren to Cultivationspren and ect. He or he and Cultivation build in a mandate as to the type of people they can bond with and the conditions by which the bond mate can gain more power. These conditions were initially somewhat nebulous but over the years became codified. Humans are great at pattern recognition so the humans involved noticed what the pattern was and put it into words as guiding principles for future generations. Men get regulated by oaths, the spren get regulated by the pre existing Megaspren SF/NW. The Sibling is created by the same process as the other Orders spren. If it happened that way then these concepts that drive the KR progression, these Divine attributes, could have been built in when the spren were born. It wouldn't matter then who came up with the concepts. Could be a cultural perception of what the Heralds were, it could have been Ishar in an act of positive PR, it could have been an agreement between Honor and Cultivation on what these Divine attributes should be. However the concepts entered the system, once there they became self perpetuating.

  35. YKYASFW you're known as the guy in work "with the massive books" and each one of them is a Sanderson/Jordan novel. I read on my shift in work and everyone always thinks these books are just behemoths (though they are) even when this is relatively normal in the fantasy genre.

  38. I was thinking about this and posted my thought in another thread, but I decided I didn't want to derail that one. Sleep is awesome. Sleep does so many things for the body. It allows it to recover, healing it from exhaustion and the build up of toxins that make you sore. In fact, "A Good Night's Sleep" is often the cure for many, many things that ail us, including diseases and physical injuries. So if you Compound Bronze and always have the effects of "A good night's sleep", does that mean you heal from sicknesses faster? Does that mean you can run forever and never get exhausted or sore, as the "Wakefulness" constantly renews your body as if you just had 8 hours of sleep every moment of every day? Is Bronze much stronger than it looks on the surface? Or is it simply "You don't need to actually sleep" and doesn't actually grant the benefits that sleep give?

  40. Not really. Brandon really doesn't like people reading it because of various flaws he's mentioned in it and he generally doesn't consider it very good, aside from the one bit that he cannibalized into The Way of Kings. However, since he wrote it as a master's thesis he can't prevent people from accessing it since those are part of any university's publicly available archives. However, he's not required to make it any easier to access, hence the requirement that you either get it via interlibrary loan (if you have access to a library BYU will loan it to) or you go there in person. Here's one WoB on the subject: So yeah, short of doing it the hard way, your only option is to do it the really hard way, invent a time machine and go back to a point when Brandon did share some of his older works... and if you could do that, you'd be better off going into the future and bringing us back copies of his complete works and save us time waiting and Brandon time writing them. Just watch out for paradoxes.

  41. I think by that point any difference between your sword and an ordinary metal sword would be pretty minimal. You've already taken something that was once human, transformed it once, then reshaped it and transformed it again. The multiple transformations are probably going to fuzz up the Spiritual Connection of 'used to be human' that was there originally and by carving the wood from the first transformation you've taken something that resembled life and turned it into something that does not. Law of BioChromatic Parallelism and all that.

  42. Oh boy. This is a thing. Odds are, Auster as it is known in Warbreaker is not a Shard. There might be another Shard called Austerity, but I doubt it. Not every Shard has a direct counterpart.

  43. Something interesting I've noticed about Brandon's books is that whenever there is a system of racism or discrimination, the bigotry seems to be rooted in justifiable reasons. For example, on Roshar, the dominant group are the lighteyes, whereas the persecuted or lower group are the darkeyes. It is explained that this is because of the fact that the Knights Radiant had light eyes, and so the people began to associate light eyes with prestige and developed a social order around it. When Kaladin first summons his Shardblade in WoR, his eyes lighten, much to his chagrin. On Scadrial, a similar situation exists with the noblemen oppressing the skaa. At one point Ham wonders philosophically if the differences between the skaa and nobility are legitimate grounds for the oppression of the skaa. These two examples are interesting to me because both of these systems of "racism" or discrimination were originally based in legitimate differences - the Knights Radiants were powerful, strong protectors who had light eyes, and the skaa were physiologically different and less intelligent from the noblemen. I'm not saying that these things justify the social stratification in these societies, but it definitely serves as an explanation, and one that could be easily used to maintain and promote such discrimination. I feel like racism on earth (based on skin color) has no foundation other than historical ethnocentrism, because skin color does not separate people physiologically or by intelligence, but in the case of Roshar and Scadrial, it seems that there were much more legitimate reasons originally for the social separation. Has anyone else noticed that the systems of discrimination in the cosmere seem to have legitimate historical foundations, and what do you guys think about this observation?

  45. I’m a new fan of the Way of Kings and I’ve been enjoying the story thus far however I have been finding some problematic elements in the book that have been making me feel uncomfortable. As a young Indian woman who has had to deal with colourism all her life I had hoped to escape those feelings of inferiority when I picked up this book. The fact that the general populace of dark-eyed people feel the need to join the war and risk death so as to have a shot at becoming light eyes is a mockery of the struggle people of colour face in the real world where the only option is to assimilate or risk being cast out. I have enjoyed certain aspects of the book I also feel it'd be disingenuous to continue reading. Whilst I realise that ultimately this is just a fantasy book, I believe that such views are poisonous to society.

  47. What do you think will be Jasnah's most important lesson for Shallan? 1) The voidbringer writings she worked so hard on? 2) Lessons about Shadesmare? 3) Soulcasting? 4) Something else? I think her most important lesson is summed up from this quote in chapter 1: Jasnah even says its the most important lesson, more important than soulcasting. This quote is very foreshadowing, not only because it is important for Shallan to stand up for herself and face her dark past, but also because talks about illusion even before we know she is a light weaver, or what light weaving really is.

  48. Great point! These "true lies" can be extremely powerful. In a way, good and evil are both self fulfilling prophecies. When Syl coaches Kaladin to move forward and help recreate the Radiants it is a sort of "true lie" that can become true. Just like when Yalb suckers the new guy into doing his chores, but says it can help his standing among the crew. If the new guy takes it well, it can help him get along (until he turns out to be a Ghostblood agent and sinks the ship, anyway). If the new guy acts surly, it can make things worse.

  49. Groups on the Shard Let me introduce you to the several groups on the forum. Most of you are in a group called "Members" but there are some special groups you should know about. 17th Shard staff Head Administrators: These are the three founders of site. They are Rubix, otherwise known as Josh Walker. He is one of the co-founders and the owner of the site. He and his wife, Mi’chelle--firstRainbowRose--both live in Utah and primarily stalk Brandon. Then there is me, Chaos, otherwise known as Eric Lake. I'm the day-to-day site administrator. When the site breaks, it is usually my fault. Administrators: These, along with the Head Admins, are the day-to-day leadership of 17th Shard. Some of these have a particular area where they specialize in outside the forums, like the Coppermind or Arcanum. They have expanded powers over moderators. Moderators: These are staff members who do regular management of the forum, like move topics, edit posts, deal with reports, etc. Other groups Next up, we have people who are not 17th Shard staff, but manage other sites we run. There are Keepers, which manage the Coppermind Wiki, and then there are Arcanists, which are staff of Arcanum. Then, we have +Patrons, who are our Patreon supporters. Lastly, we have Dragonsteel Entertainment which include Brandon, his assistants like Peter Ahlstrom and Isaac Stewart, and other Dragonsteel employees.
