  1. I'm nonbinary, my body's 26 but honestly I'm so odd I don't have any idea what that means, or maybe that means I know enough to have no idea what that means? Who knows? Anyway, my obsessions are music, a lot of Brandon writing, the SCP Wiki (if you do not know that place, go there, it will blow your mind), and MUDs/similar games, MOOs, MUSHes, etc. I'm blind, so you can best get my engagement through text or audio, and admittedly I am stereotypically terrible at formatting. I admit I haven't read much Brandon outside of the Cosmere and the end of WoT, once I had absorbed all of that I kind of had to stop reading anything of substantial size for a while. So bit by bit I'm chewing my way through different parts of the SCP Wiki's hubs (the Antimemetics Division is some doom) until I get good series energy again, and then I'm probably going to do it all in one massive run. Even though it's not all one series. I read Stormlight in audio, so now I'm going back and reading it slowly in Braille, there's something really nice about actually being able to see how someone wanted you to perceive the cadence and emphasis of a thing. As much as we can perceive cadence in text, anyway. I'm a mishmash of emotions which is entirely too aware of itself. I have no idea when it is I really started as a concept, and happily have no idea when I'll end. No better or no worse than anything else around me, I just have ideas and the drive to explore others'. Me and a few others are creating an abstract, concept Stormlight playlist, best listened to shuffled. When I initially thought of writing this, for over a month, all I could think of for my introduction were songs, most of the ones I put here are the ones I would have chosen. Which probably tells you everything you need to know about me, honestly lol. Highlights, just titles because I can't links yet. I originally tried to do that, oops. This is so Oathbringer to me, Stormlight and Mistborn, and, where we are, the whole universe. Who, at some point, doesn't know this? And doesn't it always lead to either the best or the most disastrous actions? Thrice - The Dark "Over town, the flags are up, every soul says they're fighting the good fight, paradox too plain to see, but only when the well runs dry..." Blanco White - On the Other Side All of the lyrics of this, so much. All of them. But, with an attempt at denoting the cadence lines in some basic way: "Deceiver says, he says, you belong to me, you don't want to breathe the light of the others, fear the light, fear the breath, fear the others for eternity. But I hear them now, and hear the clarity, hear the venom, the venom in, what, you say, inoculated, bless this immunity." Tool - Fear inoculum And every bit of this. I couldn't pick a lyric if I tried. Tool - Pneuma This, to me, is the essential song of transformation. "I choose to live and to lie, kill and give and to die, learn and love and to, do, what it takes to step through." Tool - 46 and 2 Grandbrothers - Long Forgotten Future Manu Delago - Mode 2 Manu Delago - Uplifted This cadence is familiar... I have a feeling it's familiar to Stormlight too. Not because it's familiar to me. But because it's familiar to a concept. Humans do that, too. Not the same way. Not nearly so deeply. But they did, and some do, and it happens. Alexandre Desplat - Courtyard Apocalypse (from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II soundtrack) Global Drum Project, all of it. Dances with Wood and Tars are the tracks on the playlist though 10 years - Writing on the Walls Iamthemorning - Touching II James Newton Howard - Bow and Arrow Ryuichi Sakamoto - Andata Gary Girouard - The Thinker Gary Girouard - Nebula Whitebear - Lost in Vibrations, Pt. 2 Anoushka Shankar - Boat to Nowhere Anoushka Shankar - Crossing the Rubicon Amethystium - Mono No Aware (opening) Bruno Sanfilippo - Pianette Hildur Guðnadóttir - Elevation Slipknot - XIX "There's a story meant to be told, but the door is shut in the cold..." Blanco White - Olalla Coldplay - Politik A Perfect Circle - Feathers Osi and the Jupiter - Baldur Thomas Bergersen - Run Free The Daydream Club - Improv #1 - A Tale of Two Modes Christopher Tin - Haf Gengr Hriðum - "The Storm-Driven Sea" James Newton Howard - My Name is Robert Neville Grandbrothers - Wuppertal Grandbrothers - Naive Rider Grandbrothers - Stutie V Grandbrothers - Newton's Cradle Phil France - Transition Grandbrothers - white Nights Honorable mentions that didn't make it in due to being too specific to other things or not quite lining up the way I wanted them to, or that made it here due to being bits of me that weren't on the playlist. "She took my portrait as well as she could do with someone who seemed to be not there at all..." Josh Ritter - Dreams "He can feel his skin like a prison, like a dying cage he struggles to live inside, he tries to call out but nobody hears him. At the ragged edge of the silence, in the calm that always comes with the violence, sleep inside the heart and the hope of redemption." The October Project - Sunday Morning Yellow Exocat - Demons Within Rise Against - People Live Here Shaman's Harvest - Tusk and Bone So there's a bunch of the things that make up all the varying bits of my existence, the playlist link is going to land wherever those should go once I can post them. I look forward to participating, I've been reading for a bit. I'm quiet until I start talking, and then dear god do I start talking, so if I'm ever too noisy by all means, tell me to shut up for a bit.

  2. I said on a Stormlight Shardcast way back when about how I think most people would think and act like Moash. I certainly found him relatable, in an uncomfortable way, that I found challenging. I have to deal with my anger about how Kaladin's arc is ending up with, if not forgiveness, then some kind of letting go, in a way that feels unfair. I frequently am annoyed whenever someone claims that Kaladin's anger and hatred is unreasonable - no, it isn't, it's perfectly reasonable. I want to hold onto it, even wallow in it. I get Moash's rage deeply, and that's why I despise it so much. It's the point where I have to grapple with Brandon's personal philosophy the most, the part where it seems clearest to me that this is a book written by someone whose philosophy doesn't 100% align with mine, and also the part where I do the most self-reflection to consider if I do agree with what Brandon is saying about hatred. I don't want to be like Moash, but if I hold onto my rage, is that a guarantee I'm going to end up doing something unforgivable, or must I let go of it to be the kind of person I admire more (ie. Kaladin)?

  8. Which two powers they get is as @Pathfinder said a natural pairing. I think the reason Knight's Radiant get two is because they are accessing the magic through two shards Honor & Cultivation. The Fused only seem to have one power each because they are accessing it through 1 shard, Odium. All KR Spren are a mix of both Honor and Cultivation's investiture. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/253/#e6454 Fused aren't gaining access through a spren, but through the investiture that modified them into Cognitive Shadows.(Odium's investiture). https://wob.coppermind.net/events/362/#e11156 Now none of this is necessarily applicable to other Cosmere settings, but it seems to be the way magic on Roshar works.

  9. Ahhh this thread moves fast. Sorry this is kind of a late reply. Anytime! I don't really like getting into heated debates, especially online where everything can fall apart so quickly, but this is a topic that's important to me. I feel your pain *cries too*. I'm sorry, I honestly don't know what to say. I don't know what words would make it better, of even if those words exist. I have no idea what that must be like, but you're most definitely not being a chull. But we're with you. You don't have to fight this battle alone. *sends hugs* This made my day! If only more fanfics were like this. Yeah, I don't recall it ever being confirmed in the books. And did Brandon actually say Shallan was bi, or that he was flattered that someone read her as bi? Because those are two different things.

  10. So, I'm reading through the books again and little things keep catching my attention. One is that in WoR while Kaladin is in jail he sees little Spren that look like wires. In an interlude that I think is in twok we see Axis the collection looking for Spren. At the end when he is sent to jail he says something about having another chance to see captivity Spren. I believe this is what Kaladin saw in his cell. Now, the interesting part is why Kaladin saw it when Axis never did. This may be because he is a radiant, buti think there's more to it. I think it is because Kaladin felt trapped. He felt like he was caged and therefore his emotions drew the Spren to him. Now Axis seems to be so carefree I doubt he truly felt captive in prisons. More than likely he just sees it as a slight delay in his quest to see all Spren. This mindset is not enough to draw the Spren.

  11. Is there such a thing? Isn't the point of morality that you are doing the right thing? Can it be possible to do too good of a thing? I understand, but don't agree with, the argument that what Moash did was right, but that doesn't seem to be your rebuttal here. It seems, and you can correct me if I'm misinterpreting it, that you are saying that simply because it's hard to take the high road, we shouldn't be disappointed in those who don't. This doesn't make any sense. We should all try to do the best and most moral thing we can and expect others too as well. Now we can disagree and debate on what is and what isn't moral, but to justify actions by saying it is too highly most to expect people to do it is ridiculous. It's basically an easy it for those who don't want to do the right thing.

  16. Awakening is the perfect art for cartoonists, and as such I think it would be nice to have a place to put cartoons about awakened items that are rendered in a cartoony manner. Cartooning is not just about the drawing, even if you aren't a cartoonist, feel free to add suggestions for what you would like to see an awakened cartoon version of. Would probably work best if you are specific, by saying something like "A Banana, awakened with the command 'Go Skinny Dipping'" or some such. To start this off here are a couple of awakened objects rendered in cartoon form: 1. Mustache: "Feed Me" 2. Match stick man: "Light the Fuse" (spoilered because it's an animated gif) 3. Glove: "Be a cutie-pie-'lil boon companion" (some of the cute things Glovey the Awakened glove does):

  17. This is a theory as to how Kelsier was walking around in the flashback at the end of Bands of Mourning. I believe he's a mistwraith. I stumbled upon this theory when I read the following on the Coppermind regarding mistwraiths: "A single Hemalurgic spike is enough to staple a Cognitive Shadow to a mistwraith, though whether this has happened in the past is unknown." One could definitely argue that Kelsier is a cognitive shadow of sorts (albeit with more sentience than most) in Secret History. We also know that he is somehow missing an eye during the events of era 2. My guess is that he stapled himself to a mistwraith and had it assume the form of himself, and since he isn't a kandra, he doesn't need gifts to stay sane. He moved the one spike to his eye to both emulate marsh, and to give himself Steelsight. Thoughts? Comments? Has this theory been created before or did I find a new one?

  22. OK, in terms of what magic would I love to try out, it's probably being a Coinshot. (Or being a full Mistborn, which would include being a Coinshot.) But what I'd actually use the most, day to day, if I could, would be a zincmind. My other concern about Surgebinding, aside from availability of Stormlight, would still stand, too: having a sentient spren around me 24/7 seems like something I might find unsettling. I assume I'd get used to it, and of course part of the Nahel bond is probably having a deep Connection that helps smooth things over, but I'm often introverted and want "alone time"; the idea of never being guaranteed alone time is pretty distressing. If I could get over that, I think I'd like to try being a Truthwatcher - not a la Renarin, but the "real deal" (I guess like The Stump?). Having the ability to heal others, and also to spin illusions with Illumination. (I kind of think I'd be temperamentally inclined to "see things" than to "do things", as well.)

  23. Well a human straight male can still objectively comment that another human straight male is handsome. But in regards to your point, then potentially Kandra would be the most suited to judge as they could physically look like any race or sex involved, and have possibly experienced living as any race or sex involved, so could most objectively comment. (also they would not only look, but have have fully functional parts of those individuals, so if anyone could truly understand where someone is coming from, it would theoretically be a kandra)

As Kesier says is MSH: "Time didn’t pass; time had no relevance here. It was not a place. Location had no relevance. Only Connection, person to person, man to world, Kelsier to god."

  33. My apologies in advance, this one's pretty dang long. It has a sort of Shadows of Silence vibe to it, and that being the case Viewer Discretion Advised. Nothing sexual or anything; just violent. I never talk. Neither does anybody, in this world. For two years now, conversations have been dangerous; even deadly. Ever since the Cult of the Mysterium walked into that city and performed their ritual... But that's not today's story. Today's story has to do with the person who broke the rules. Seeing as how it's only been two years since the Incident, it's been kind of difficult to get people like small children to shut up when you need it to be quiet. Rules have been put in place, of course: You don't speak. You don't speak, and if you must, you speak in a whisper. You're less likely to draw the Phantoms' attention that way. If you can't whisper, then you speak as softly as you can. Avoid oral conversation at all costs, as even an idle chitchat can call the Phantoms. Keep your children indoors, and make sure they don't talk with anybody. If they do, punish them. Severely. Talking to yourself is generally fine. Phantoms like having more than one target to torment; if you're alone, then they won't bother. Talking to someone else, though? That's an issue. That's what this story is about. His name was Jack, I think. That's what I read off the note I had to pass back a few weeks ago. He was a bit of flirt, to be completely honest. Nothing wrong with that, of course; not until the Cult of the Mysterium summoned the Phantoms, that is. We were walking down the halls at school, silent as the moon. Sometimes you heard someone trip and yelp, and everyone would freeze, praying that the Phantoms didn't arrive; they rarely did. Long and loud conversations was how you caught their attention. Not a short, muffled yelp. Still, a yelp amongst such impenetrable silence could make anyone sweat. It was then that Jack yelled across the hallway at Edith. He probably did it reflexively; it happened to all of us, now and then. Laughing aloud at something we find funny. Telling our parents how our day had been at school. So as long as we shut up quick enough, we were fine. That being the case, I have no idea why Jack continued his conversation. "Edith!" He called. "Hey, Edith! Over here!" You could see it in everyone's eyes; they wanted to shush him so badly, but they were worred about making it louder than it already was. People began diving into classrooms and under tables, their eyes terrified as Jack realized just how big of a mistake he had made. "Eeeeeedith." A ghostly voice moaned. "Heeeere." "No." I whispered despite myself. The Phantom appeared. It was vaguely humanoid, and completely transparent. No eyes, though. They never had eyes. Never. "Eeeeeedith." It moaned again. Jack began to whimper. The faint scent of urine could tell you just how terrified this kid was. "Heeeeere." Edith-- a short, redheaded girl-- suddenly appeared before my very eyes. She appeared just between Jack and the Phantom, looking just as terrified as everyone else; probably more terrified, in fact. I wish that would've been it. I feel that that could've been it. Phantoms rarely did anything more than what you had actually said. Unless you kept talking, they would vanish eventually, leaving everyone a good deal paler than they had been before. Edith whimpered. "Please." Big mistake. I probably should've explained this earlier, but showing weakness to a Phantom is the worst mistake you could ever make. It gives it freedom to do whatever it wants. Don't ask me how it works; I can only tell you this from experience. Firsthand experience of today. The Phantom laughed crazily, and the screaming began. There wasn't any surviving a free-willed Phantom. You might as well say what you might before you go. The Phantom grew to ten times its size, and the walls began to close in. I threw myself into another hallway, so I didn't see what happened next. I heard screams; horrible, blood-curdling screams. After that, the walls became covered in red, dripping like the morning dew of a huge oak tree. I slipped in the blood, and saw something roll down the hallway. I don't know what it was, but it had red hair, and was coated in blood. People were running around like mad, trying to reach their friends before they died. Everywhere, people were screaming, their limbs being shorn from their bodies by some unseen phantasmal force. It was horrible. The walls were still closing in. People in the last hallway were being crushed to death. I tried to stop them; I tried to save myself. I broke my arm from the strain. It was going to crush me to death. Then, suddenly, it stopped. I can't tell you what happened. I only know I was trapped between two walls. Hours later, someone finally got me out. I wrote all this down and told them what had happened. Or, rather, what I saw. I still don't know what happened. I only know one thing. Never free the Phantoms. (Edit): Going back and re-reading this it can be a little confusing. My apologies. A world where you need a license to do anything; go to school, eat food, cut your hair. EVERYTHING!!!

  34. Just to clarify, has anybody actually contested the point that Brandon's books should have more and better LGBTQ+ representation? I was just going to post that but I have more to say. Books in general should always have LGBTQ+ rep, but in particular I think Brandon's books are an especially important example. And I think this because of one fact: Brandon is LDS, and a significant portion of his readership is LDS. I think that's a fact that makes it even more important for Brandon to have representation than normal, because I can say from experience that a very large percentage of the LDS community is homophobic to one extent or another. That's not to say I have anything against LDS people in general, to be clear. But my parents used to be LDS and come from a big family, and I talk with my cousins a lot, so I can say from experience that it does happen. I've had many conversations with casual homophobia, including but not limited to: Posters in school promoting LGTBQ+ anything are annoying. They decided to stop watching Flash because of LGTB main characters. 'It's funny when they try to correct you that their pronoun is actually he and then you're just like OK... she.' 'I have a friend that wants to be a guy, but it's like, God made you a girl, just accept that.' Numerous other things that I can't remember right now. LGBTQ+ rep is just unnecessary. They 'don't have any problem with the people but I don't want to read about it' (that last one also use to be me, along with a couple of the rest of these, cause I had basically no exposure to any of that. I didn't know what being gay was until 5th grade and I was confused about a genderfluid character cause I didn't understand how their genitals transitioned like that.) But regardless, that's kind of the problem. My cousins have literally no idea what's going on in the slightest and that doesn't change because they avoid media that might cause them to change. But since Brandon is an LDS author I think that is something that would help a lot of people understand this. Another thing I'd like to note is that I don't think it's necessarily fair to say that trans people were always whatever gender, for a couple reasons. For one gender is fake so does that even make sense as a thing to say? Actually I guess that's my main point. Honestly this is mostly nitpicking. Also @Honorless has anyone ever recommended Homestuck (homestuck.com) to you? Warning on significant language and discussion of sexual topics. Also romance isn't really relevant for a really long time so the LGBTQ+ status of characters isn't discussed at first. That being said it's a really good webcomic in general and at this point it and discussion with other fans is the primary way I become more knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ topics. If you have more questions about it feel free to PM me. Or just ask in here, it's up to you.

  35. Regarding the representation of Ranette and Drehy, my issues are: Them being gay has, so far, only been shown in how it affects other characters We don't see Drehy being gay, not even once, and sexuality is very much an integral part of people, it's not added in, it's part of the whole. We don't see Ranette being gay either, just how her being gay, and thus unattainable, affects Wayne. A part of her character is dedicated to fleshing out the character development of another character. Drehy being gay comes out in a context which just serves to show how the other characters are cool with it. We are told they are gay, we don't even get to see it. It may not seem important to you, but it is to us. Some of you even said that you didn't even realize that Ranette was gay? Is that good representation? That even after all these books, all these characters, these two are the only canon gay representation. That there's no indication that homosexuality even exists outside of these two characters. We get the information that we have from WoBs, we don't see any Vorin gay couples in the background scenes. We don't see any conflict arising due to the differences in opinion between Pathism and Survivorism. We get two points of light, and all I'm saying is I would like them to shine brighter, not just to illuminate other things, and that other motes of light join them @AonEne, @Bliev I found something: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1roLOB8OZm34XjzVyDmH5fyWiPKGYy8i9EzRuhBMZauo/htmlview#gid=0

Anyone you think might be beautiful could turn out to find the very idea that you think they are beautiful disgusting. Even the most positive thing that could happen to you, is that some people might get together and put in their votes on whether or not you deserve equal Human Rights, to love, to marry, to have kids. Understand this and be kind. I'm sorry if it looks like I'm being an chull from your perspective but trust me when I tell you this, you have no idea how this feels. People seem to have moved on from debates regarding these kinds of issues now a days, citing how heated they get. This one did get heated, thank you to those of you who still showed up and spoke

  37. I think the point, though, from my perspective anyways, is that the representation is skewed heavily in favor of heteronormativity. We all know it. We can justify it by Brandon's background, his lack of skill, or his desire not to get it wrong (all of which I think sells him short as an author), but it's definitively true. Fantasy is true creativity: you create a world that you want. And including people of varying sexual orientations has not been a key priority for him up to this point, which doesn't stand out or matter much to most straight folks, sure, but for others, lack of representation can be very jarring and a symbol of an authors' priorities and world-building. If someone can take the time to study world religions to create Shai's culture, to incorporate allusions to ancient texts and languages throughout one of the most epic world-building creations I've ever seen, then they can do better in terms of representation. I believe he can do it, and I believe he should.

  38. Okay, so looks like I'll have to sort through and respond to a few of the subtexts here, which would also help me put my rationale for creating this topic and answer a few questions that might arise which one may not be so inclined to ask directly: First of all, and let's not pretend that this isn't the first alarm bell that rang in the heads of a lot of people here upon seeing this thread, it's quite clear from looking at the defensive responses: I do like Brandon Sanderson's works. I wouldn't be here otherwise. Click on my profile and see the no. of threads I've created, not just this one. Next, are we not supposed to be able to criticize an author? Are we not supposed to be able to disagree, not just to what they've written but also the things they say when we don't agree with their rationale? Brandon writes and talks about social and philosophical issues, this is gonna happen. Criticism is the very foundation of literature. Why gay male character? Because there are countries which specifically ban male homosexuality, eg: Singapore. Where I come from, the idea that talking about gay rights or even criminalization of male rape would take the spotlight away from women's issues is an argument that was used successfully. Let's not shy away from it, society has massive issues regarding the idea of masculinity. There's a Vine that I can't find right now that showed a guy reacting to two men holding hands with "disgusting", and then he sees two women together and hollers "are you gonna kiss or what!" Check out the rationale with creating canonical gay male characters in popular games like Mass Effect (check out the controversy regarding the number of heterosexual and lesbian characters) and Elder Scrolls (whose creator outright states that they took out Pelinal Whitestrake being gay because the player might feel weirded out that a former incarnation of their playable character was gay). Closer to home: remember the memes made in response to Dumbledore being gay? Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender's Game and a fellow Mormon author's statements against homosexuality? Now my response to the comments themselves: Regarding Drehy and Ranette: really? *scepticism*. You guys really don't think that Drehy and Ranette being gay was pivotal to their character? How much screentime have these characters even gotten? Especially Drehy, compared with other Bridge 4 characters. Also do you really not see the problem with this? You have heard of "show, not tell"? It is apparently okay in Vorin religion for a gay couple to marry and yet how many gay couples do we see in the background over three entire full-length books? Compare that with the no. of background heterosexual couples, start with Hashal and Matal, from WoK. Pathism and Survivorism are supposed to have very different views regarding homosexuality, and we see the two religions come into conflict, there's a gay character situated in the conflict zone and yet we see nothing come from it. We're just told by the author about these religions' stances and that's it. In the first place, we even get this information about how homosexuality is treated across the Cosmere from a WoB and not from the stories themselves. Ranette and Drehy (& his doctor boyfriend) are not just the only gay characters we see, they are the only indication that gay people even exist. We don't see Ranette hanging out with her girlfriend, it's just dropped that she's lesbian. Drehy doesn't say anything nor do we ever see him with his significant other, it just comes up in a discussion. And that scene was very meta. It looked like Brandon was saying "see how cool my characters are with homosexuality?"

  40. That's exactly the point. I'm trying and I'm so tired of every author who's put us through "not yet", "I'm not homophobic but..." to downright "this is against my religious beliefs"

  41. So, the Sanderson Store posted a picture of the warehouse today, and in the corner of the shot there were some foam Shardblades that are apparently going to be merchandise: Looks like the company that made them is called Forged Foam; their work has been shared on Reddit before. Here's their website; nothing Stormlight-related on it, yet. https://www.forgedfoam.com/ Looking through their current inventory, I'm guessing these will run between $100 and $150 a pop. So start saving up now!

  44. A glyph for our favorite (umm…) answer. I'm putting it here because uploading to "general" does not work and it's not a SA fanart, even if the alphabet is Rosharian. Big thanks to Harakeke, who translated the alphabet used here. (warning, link leads to WoR subforum) I had to do some guessing for this one.
