  5. So recently I had an idea for a story and I am so stinkin’ excited. A while back I wrote an expanded version of The Girl Who Looked Up and included a bunch of original ideas in it. Later I came up with an idea for a universe that a bunch of stories could be set in (I’ve already written bits and pieces from them, like a prologue for a book) and used some themes/motifs/other such things that originally showed up in my The Girl Who Looked Up. So basically I am cannibalizing the story for some of its lines (the beginning will remain pretty similar but different in tone) and taking out everything that isn’t original/from Brandon’s work. I’m posting my plans on here to force myself to be motivated about them

Honestly I don't know how you people come up with the theories and even the information on the cosmere! I've read all the books at least once and still don't know half as much as you guys here! These forum posts have been invaluable in gaining understanding of what happens where and when and even sometimes who! Thanks to all contributors especially those who provide the all important WOBs and i look forward to existing speculation and all the speculation yet to come!

  7. Ark had fallen into a dark place. He no longer wished to live. No longer wished to interact. No longer wanted anything but to drink. And drink. And drink. And drink. And drink... he shook his head, throwing the bottle away. It was empty. Ark was bored of this. But Ark had a solution. For Ark was Narrator, a being of incredible power. And he could become new, if he wished. Lose his memories, his shape, everything but his power and soul. Ark could start fresh. So, with a brilliant flash of light, the place where Ark had sat, in a lonely plain, was now a massive looming tree. A redwood. Full grown. And from the bottom of the tree, a new form emerged. The new form seemed to be made of bark. It's eyes were a lively green, glowing in the light. It's hair was leaves, a pale green. It had moss covering it in the places that needed covered, and among its feet, miniature ferns and fungus grew. This form was feminine, and as it moved, life sprouted up around its feet. It's feet never seemed to leave the ground, instead fusing into it, sliding along. When the figure emerged out of the shadow of the tree, it lit up. Every piece of this creature was new. Was life. Was happiness. Narrator Willow had been born.

  9. Under normal circumstances the Command used is what determines the amount of Breaths to be used in the effect, and unlike Allomancy the breaths are not normally burned up. That being the case, the way I see it there are several possibilities: They get a massive Burst-like increase to their Heightenings, but in doing they expend/use-up/lose all their breaths, leaving them a Drab. Same as above but it doesnt burn their own native Breath. It only works while they are actively Awakening something, and forces them to include ALL their breaths whether the Command would call for it or not. This Might cause some sort of Increased effect of the Command, or it could just be a pure waste. Tactically that could still be useful, if you hit somebody with it while they were making a Lifeless they'd loose all their breaths and be unable to reclaim them from the identity lock. It might make some sort of super-Invested Lifeless at the same time (Im assuming they'd be using the 1-Breath version of the Command). It doesnt affect the use/flow of Breaths at all (they remain usable and recoverable), but it does cause a Burst that drains all available Color in the Area, preventing further awakening.

  10. So while this could be nothing, I was looking through some discussions about stormlight 4 and I started to connect some dots. While it is not confirmed, a lot of the fandom- and myself- believe Hesina, Kaladin's mother, to be originally from Kharbranth. If this is true, we known from the end of Oathbringer that all those who were born in Kharbranth and their spouses will be spared from Odium. We also know that Odium is bound by his word and so he must follow this deal he struck with Taravangian. While I've seen quite a few people saying this deal will end up being bad for Taravangian and that Odium ultimately got the better deal, I think this deal is what will bring about Odium's downfall, not Taravangian's. Now I should say this having any sort of possibility weighs heavily on Hesina being born in Kharbranth, but under the assumption that she is then this means that Lirin is spared by association. And yet, even with this deal potentially protecting him, much of the fanbase believes Lirin will die in Stormlight 4. This is where I think Odium trips himself up. If Lirin were to die as a result of Odium- so be singers, listeners, or corrupted spren- the deal between Odium and Taravangian will immediately become void. And while we don't necessarily know what happens when a shard's word is broken, it is my personal headcanon that a big part of the process for Honor being shattered was that he in some way broke his word. While obviously this has a lot holes in it, I just wanted to point it out as I've been seeing a lot of people talking about the Kharbranth deal and whether or not Lirin will die in the next book.

  13. This is not how Kel is depicted in the books. He specifically talks about choosing to trust people, rather than choosing to believe that everyone will betray him. This isn't an "Evil" person philosophy. I suppose you could go the "that's what he SAID, but he really believed different" path, but then I could do that for everyone. Breeze SAID he wanted to help the Skaa, but he really just looked ahead and knew TLR was going to lose so he decided to join the winning side. Clubs SAID he changed his mind and wanted to help, but really he was just a spy for TLR and was shocked when the actually won. Vin SAID she loved Elend, but really she just wanted his crown. See? It makes no sense. Kel was a good man. He had a lot to learn about people, specifically that not everyone of a certain class is evil just because they don't fight the system they're in, but he's a good man, as much as any man can be called 'good'. He isn't fighting for his own riches. Even becoming a religious figure wasn't about his ego. it was about inspiring the Skaa to rise up against their oppressors. Well...maybe his ego was a factor, but in the end, he would be dead, so what would he care?

  16. Yeah, I think this is the problem for new readers, they have not had two novels and five novellas to parse all this world-building in a gradual manner, it's just all here in the first handful of chapters. It's a lot to take in. I think I'd be having similar problems to LB's if I was dropped in here. Exactly, but I do have sympathy with anyone trying to parse this level of world-building without some 1,500 pages (wild guesstimate) of background and development. I'd be really cautious about that. There is a lot of reintroduction and not a great deal of 'action' in these first chapters. I'm not connived more introduction is going to help with engagement and forward momentum, that's a real challenge, but we do not do this because it is easy, right? (Apologies to, JFK). Good way of thinking about it. Yeah, I think that can be communicated quite easily, without a lot of extra world-building (reprise) up front in this book. I'm fine with it now, and I do remember R having a lot of doubts and swaying in Book 2, whereas in Book 1 it was in the past. I'm fine with it. I think you could play that up a lot more as they come through the portal. You could do a lot more to make is feel that they are bleeding, that they have come off the battlefield and are shocked, distraught at the loss of a dear comrade, etc. There's not enough emotion, depth of feeling, blood and tears, on that first page or two, IMO.

  17. Congratulations to Honorless! That is correct! Overview: The name is Templeton Fig, and he owns the Seran New District Cemetery. 1: This character really likes the color white and 1.5: That doesn't necessarily mean that white is their favourite color in general. Fig has a large collection of taxidermied albino animals, which he takes care of almost religiously. 2: This person is pretty rich. He owns a nice house and can afford to pay huge amounts for stuffed albino animals. 3: This character's profession is related to death. He literally owns a graveyard. 4: This character is located on a planet where it is sometimes difficult to see the stars and night sky. Scadrial. The reason that I said "sometimes" is that the Mists no longer cover everything at night, instead covering small regions. 5: This character interacts face to face with Wayne once, but believes him to be someone else, 5.5 I'm pretty sure that Wayne doesn't even make physical contact with this character and 6: Wayne pretends to be another character from Mistborn Era 1 during his interaction with this character. Wayne dresses up like Steel Inquisitor Marsh (Ironeyes), who is the Scadrial equivalent of our Grim Reaper. Fig believes that Wayne is Ironsides, come to take his soul for his sins. Wayne doesn't touch Fig once, as his words are enough to have the man cracking like an egg, and learns more about the whereabouts of the spike. Also, bonus points for terror: Wayne (as Ironeyes) tells Fig that the stolen spike was one of his own, and that he wanted it back.

I'd bet that if they did it right, they could pull some Connection shenanigans as well to keep their powers, but they don't seem to have pulled that off yet. There is some indication that they can access Fortune (Stormlight spoilers)

  20. It's interesting to me that the Rysn Novella is apparently a higher priority to him than the Rock one. Like Aimia is real interesting and I'd love to learn more about, but I don't see it being as directly relevant to current storyline as Rock and the Horneater Peaks, and thus I would think that one would be the priority. Which suggests that maybe I'm wrong about Aimia not being directly relevant to RoW's storyline, which is exciting in it's own way.

  21. @Wiresegal and I patched together Kal's rendition of Frozen's Let it go, as sung by Kaladin from stormlight (Syl too) [she helped with the sylllables] also thanks to @shallan314 for the inspiration (image credit goes to botanica) [Verse 1] [Kaladin] The storm burns bright in my pocket tonight Not a windspren to be seen A kingdom of oaths now broken And it looks like he’s the king The highstorm howls but I've got no storm inside Couldn't keep my Oaths, Tien knows I've tried [Pre-Chorus 1] [Syl] Go lead your men, don't let them see Be the Stormblessed you always had to be Conceal, don't feel, don't let it show Well, now they know! [Chorus 1] [Kaladin] Let it go, let it go I've been here before Let it go, let it go We save them as Bridge Four! I don't care what they all will say Let this storm rage on The winds never bothered me anyway. [Verse 2] [Syl] It's funny how the sky's view Can make everything seem small [Kaladin] And the fears that once destroyed me I push beyond them all! [Pre-Chorus 2] [Sigzil] It's time to see what this can do To test the limits and break through Do right, not wrong, Ideals to keep you're free! [Chorus 2] [Kaladin] Let it go, let it go I am one with the wind and sky Let it go, let it go You'll never see them die Here I stand, in winds I claim Let the storm rage on! [Bridge] [Kaladin] My power banished as I fell below the ground My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around And one thought drives me, even in the darkest night. To protect those I hate, so long as it is right! [Chorus 3] [Kaladin] Let it go, let it go I will stand like a Knight of old Let it go, let it go What's broken shines like gold! [Syl and Kaladin] Here we stand, with our Bond still strong! Let both storms rage on! The skies never bothered us anyway.

  22. I've thought along similar lines about oathbreaking and shard-death. That's why Radiant-spren are "killed" when the Radiants break their oaths; the nahel bond makes the human and the spren into one being, so when the human betrays the ideals that their spren represents, that's the same as the spren betraying its own essence, becoming its opposite and cancelling itself out. I don't think it's a stretch to think that a shard might be killed or splintered in a similar (albeit larger) method.

  23. A lot of people i see talking about AoN seem to think that the Former was a early version of Preservation. We know that Decay was adapted into Ruin but Brandon never said the same for the Former To me its always seemed like "The Former" was a very early analogue of Adonalsium, back before Brandon knew exactly what he wanted it to be What do you think?

  25. There are certainly combination powers that could take on Mistborn. That's why I specified any Single power set from any single system, because a Mistborn or Feruchemical Radiant is possible. Technically, any mixture of powers is possible with Hemalurgy. A Feruchemical Radiant would wipe the floor with a Mistborn.

  27. Here it is "The fighting continues, the voice said, speaking as if it hadn’t heard Raeth’s request. Their hatred is strong. Their first gifts failed because they were too easily manipulated, so my sons turned to that which is creation itself. Order and Chaos, Light and Dark, Sha and Lum. From these they crafted gifts. Dark, hateful gifts. Powers that draw upon the essence of that which MAKES. Each time, the power was not pure enough, and the edge given to their people was not decisive enough. Ferrous and Bestarin canceled one another. More was necessary. Amberite and Verdant canceled one another. Then my sons did that which was forbidden, granting men Order and Chaos in pure forms."

  28. Here's all I could find on it "“What of the Shentis. Creations of your sons as well?” A virus, the voice said. Made by Agaris. It gave no visible disease, took no life. It had only one effect, to give sterility. Through subtlety he thought to infect Makkal’s people so that they would eventually die out and have no offspring. But, while not as clever as his brother, Makkal was not a fool. He discovered the virus and changed it, so that it bruised the flesh. Then his people would know to avoid those infected. I do not believe Agaris knows his virus lives on."

Even if it's a red herring, I feel rewarded as the reader for paying attention and have my suspicions validated. My only hang up, and it's minor, is why the officers drew on M after coming in and seeing him at the cells. He said he was there to give evidence and presumably they let him down there. Given his profession, it seems likely he could have kept his gun out of their sight pretty easily, so why did they start on the offensive? I would buy that they were watching on a security camera and saw him with a gun, some clarification from the officers would be nice though. Thanks for sharing!

  32. For Granite, the fight to survive was a bitter one. He honestly didn't know how he'd lasted this long and he was certain that the odds of him living much longer were beyond low. The ribbons on his mistcloak fluttered around him as he spun in the downpour, half fighting back, half running away, just trying desperately to stay out of the withergeists' dark and deadly reach. Every one of his metals were running low, with his pewter nearly depleted. Once that ran out, he was done for. It was funny, he thought as his knife tore through the thin wing of one of the creatures, sending it tumbling, flightless, to the ground. For all his time spent trying to find out what the storms his mother really was, he would never really know the truth. He had, by this time, accepted that he would soon die. He only hoped that his sister, his aunt, his uncle, and his cousins would survive the withergeists. It was too late for him. He supposed that some might think of him as quite privileged, for an orphan. He had a family. They cared for him. More than his mother had, anyway. And yet, the pain had never really gone away. It had faded, yes, but the scars were still there. It had been enough to Snap him, obviously. And then he had just... left. All those things with Jaywalk and Aunt Sophie. Things of Narrators and Shards, Investiture. Every answer led to five more questions. And at the heart of it all was his mother. The woman who had abandoned him and then drove his father to commit suicide. He had hated her for a long time. But now, having seen a glimpse of the world she came from... His heart was simply confused. All of a sudden, his foot slipped on the wet pavement and just as he hit the ground, his pewter, the only thing giving him the strength to keep fighting, ran out. The sound of rain thundered in his ears, like a steady drum beat preceding an execution. His wounds - mostly from his own stupid mistakes made in haste than the withergeists - screamed at him, his head pounded. He let himself fall back onto the ground, defeated. Kill me, he thought absently as he awaited death. Just do it already. He closed his eyes tightly, letting himself just breathe before the withergeists tore him apart. He waited. And waited. Granite cracked an eye open. He immediately had to shield his gaze. Sunlight was streaming through the clouds and in its wake, the withergeists hissed, scrambling back and away from it. What? he thought to himself. More sunlight broke the cloud cover, shining over the entire clearing. Unable to move, he laid there, watching the light flood every surface, the darkness fleeing before its touch. He didn't see much more before he fainted, turning his Soul over to the Stormfather.

They are named for the "stutter" caused by their fingers touching too much while they sign. Good catch. O and R know each other really well. So much that R can tell what O is thinking and what he will do. As to their romance, they are definitely back on after book 1. I need to put some more indicators in book 2. I've tried to make it stronger in book 3, so let me know if it lands right. Ah, no. I need to vary the number of Elg that come through, They don't always come in pairs, so they aren't paired instances. Yep. This is something from the novella prior to Seeds, and I need to put a reference to it into Book 2 as well. Cool. I'll take another look as I do the next edit, and see what others say as well. Good points on the lack on tension and circular planning. I wrote this chapter because 1) I REALLY wanted to do something on this homeworld, and I think everyone is enjoying that aspect 2) It is sort of a sequel to the cliffhanger of the last book. I"m playing around with this format, hoping people will start reading #3 directly after #2. 3) It gives this group a chance to catch their breath and I can reset descriptions and personalities to remind the reader. That said, I think this does go on too long. I'll see if I can roll this in with the next chapter, or come up with something more tense to fill this one out. Thanks to @Lightbearer, @shatteredsmooth,@kais and @silk!

  35. Nakomi still bugs me. I don't see her one chapter and minor mentions advancing the story or even Avienda's character all that much. While I've not read Brandon as much as Jordan, I don't think he would spend a whole chapter investing in introducing Nakomi and then abandoning her. So to what purpose? i think Brandon has a couple chapters in other books that are similar. Dialog between a mainish character and a specific "class" of character. The world traveler. The best example, is the chapter with Kaladin and Wit (Hoid) on the shattered plains. So, my theory is that Nakomi's purpose is that she allows Brandon to pull Randland into the Cosmere in an honorary way. The rules of the Cosmere aren't pressed into Randland, but is Brandon's little signature into what he always says is Jordan's work.

Unbeknownst to you, The Nightwatcher continues, "your bane is death... or shall I say your boon is death" and summons a sword to swiftly decapitate you. But to you the sword approaches ever so slowly, ever so slightly. A millimetre every one millenia. You watch its approach with terror and elation in your heart. You want release. I feel like their Commands will try to overpower one another, and the blades will begin to consume the matter, investiture, and energy around them in an attempt to become stronger than the other. Eventually, one of the blades would win, essentially eating the other sword and overtaking its Command, but not before the surrounding area has been completely drained of matter and investiture.

And I think the "nearly divine skill" of the Skybreakers was a joking way of saying they argued a lot with the other orders.
