  3. Per the request of @Honorless I am doing an analysis of stonewards oaths. This is going to be extreamly difficult because with the exception of Willshapers(which I will most likely do next) we have the least information on them. In fact unless you count Taln no Stoneward has had a POV chapter. Additionally ideals of martial mentality and morality very greatly across cultures and times with no unifying ideals like justice or the Hippocratic oath binding them together. Because of this I have had to use several different ideologies to try and deduce Stoneward ideals along with my standard Radiant ideal theory. For those of you who don't know I believe that Radiant Oaths (with the exception of Lightweavers) follow a pattern. The first ideal is constant, the second is about service, the third is about fairness, the fourth is about trust and the fifth is about the ultimate goal. This belief fuels all of my theories. The first ideal for Stonewards is of course the same "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination." This is always the first ideal. Thankfully(for me) we also have a potential ideal for a second oath. "I will stand where others fall." This ideal reflects the duty of a Stoneward. To persevere when no one else can. Taln of course exemplifies this in his many final stands and in his refusal to give in at the hands of the fused. This is a basic idea in warfare at the ground level. For example the Spartan Ethos states that men should "...not surrender or retreat in battle" and “Hell Week(training for SEALs)” requires 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical strength and capability. The second ideal is a great idea if you happen to be pointed in the right direction however service is not enough(as Kaladin discovered). If you get six second ideal Stonewards in a room and tell them to agree on a course of action before leaving then only one of them can leave without braking their oath. This approach is clearly flawed and both Roshar and Earthan history bear the consequences. Thankfully both human philosophers and (hopefully) Rosharan Spren have come up with a solution to this issue. It is here that we turn to Just War Theory. Just War Theory states that before embarking on a course of action the resulting conflict must be in a just cause, have the right intention, have a strong probability of success, be a proportional response, and last resort(it also states that this has to be authorized by a legitimate authority but we will get to that latter). Therefore for a third Stoneward ideal I think it should be "I will not embark on a course of action unless the resulting conflict is just, reasonable and has worthwhile results." The third ideal helps with some of the comedically bad problems that Stonewards have(see how the 10 orders do everyday things thread if you don't believe me) but it does not quite help with everything. Thankfully not all of us are stonewards but that means that sometimes things are too hard for us. Both literature and history have many examples of strait forward people dealing with others who are more eclectic, esoteric or simply have different goals and ideologies. Dalinar and Kadash are a great example of this. Both are Alethi war veterans who prefer blunt and straight forward arguments, both are greatly concerned with the nature of divinity yet they can't make it through a conversation without it becoming an argument. Sparta's solution to this problem was a certain cult of obedience to Sparta with manners of dress and speech dictated by custom and credo to be identical to that of all other Spartans. Similarly low level soldiers all where uniforms and have credos of behavior that they are expected to follow. However what happens when our Stoneward needs to interact with a Lightweaver? Just War Theory offers part of the answer. As you may recall it states that legitimate authority is necessary to authorize action. Broadly this is to stop independent actors from starting wars that they cannot stop. Specifically this insures that conflicts involve people who are trained in medicine and diplomacy rather then who ever happens to have a bunch of guns. Along with trust from my theory of Radiant oaths this gets us the ideal. "I will depend on others to do their own tasks even if their methods and beliefs are alien to me." With those four oaths out of the way a Stoneward still wants the final ideal. This is the ultimate question for a Stoneward. What kind of world do they want to live in? I would say the ultimate goal of a Stoneward is live in a world in which people have the courage to approach and fulfill their dreams. So there final ideal should be "I will help others to persevere longer then I can." My pattern of radiant oaths theory can be found here.

  4. I've been pondering this for a few days now. Feruchemists were usually portrayed as Stewards and Scholars, but we've not actually seen what a Feruchemist Warrior would have looked like. Surely they had them. Sazed was untrained, and took on a squad of Koloss by himself. Imagine what a Feruchemist who was actually trained in battle, and to use his Feruchemy in battle, could do. I'm imagining them wearing something like Plate Armor, with each part made of a different metal. Steel, mostly, but potentially with some parts made of Iron or one of the other metals, if they're strong enough. Bracers and whatnot under the armor for the metals, like Pewter, which just aren't good for Armor. I imagine them training day in and day out, lifting weights, making themselves naturally strong as bodybuilders, so much so that when they half their strength, they become as strong as a regular man and still are able to move around with their armor on. That would be their natural state, just constantly filling their Pewter Minds, and potentially even their Iron Minds, if at least a little, but without suffering the drawbacks. Every day, for an hour, they'd undergo the same kind of ritual Rashek's men did, growing weaker, but it wouldn't just be weaker, it would be to store every attribute they could; health, physical and mental speed, all five senses, weight, Warmth, and if they have access to the Hybrid abilities, even things like Breath and Determination. They'd be allowed to eat twice as much as a regular soldier at meal times, storing the extra food and liquids in Bendalloy Minds. During battle, their armor would be made to expand, allowing them to draw on their strength. They'd have a massive amount of every attribute to draw on, but of course wouldn't use it all at once. They'd be like a Pewterarm, only using what they needed as they needed it. Most soldiers don't go through more than one real battle every few weeks or months, or even longer, and a dedicated training regiment could make a Feruchemist Warrior veteran intensely hard to kill or defeat. Given enough time, they could take on nearly any enemy, be they Mistborn or Knight Radiant. The main downside is the recharge time. On that note, utilizing Unkeyed Metalminds and the Medallions, you could a Full Feruchemist in modern times could have an entire squad as "Support", where THEY store all the attributes for you into an unkeyed metal mind. You can only wear up to three medalions at once, but a full Feruchemist wouldn't have that problem. Just have one person for each of the metals, each with one medallion that allows to them to store Identity and one that allows them to store another metal, and the Feruchemist could wind up with Lord Ruler levels of power in a short amount of time. Yeah, it's not permanent, or infinite, but it would be fairly close. I'm thinking with the advent of Medallions, a full feruchemist is likely the most powerful person in the Cosmere...

  5. Mostly it comes down to the mechanics. For instance if you have a game that uses Spanreeds then it wouldn't make sense to have group PMs due to Spanreeds only being one on one in world. There could also be a PM spying role, which is fairly rare, so a group PM would be quite the pain to have in game. Other times GMs don't want a large group forming and sharing information so easily. In past the community has disapproved of trust groups forming as it can marginalize those playing but not in the group by not giving them an equal or fair say. If one person asks you to do something you can always say no but it a group of trusted villagers ask you to do something and you don't want to, it can lead to issues. I wouldn't be surprised if the anti-trust group mentality has seeped into the GMs thinking when making a game and they subconsciously went away from group PMs. There is no reason for your game not to have group PMs. No one is going to complain that they can talk to others.

  6. Day 3: Chances Ellira ran as fast as her feet could take her. She didn’t know what that thing was, and at present she didn’t care. Her focus was on not dying to it. Eventually, her steps slowed as it became clear that nothing was following. She wasn’t sure where Errdal had gone - he must have diverged at some point during their run. So. There was something inside Urithiru that was essentially darkness incarnate, and killing or helping to kill Radiants at the direction of something called Odium. The question was, she supposed, its criteria for doing so. She pulled out the spanreed and parchment she kept on her at all times, and began to make her report. It wasn’t at the normal time, but the situation wasn’t precisely normal either. Soon enough, the spanreed began blinking, and wrote a few simple words on the paper. She frowned in thought for a few seconds, stroking the hilt of her dagger, then smiled. Understood, she wrote back. The next few days would be... interesting, at the very least. Dfyan was a scholar, a scientist. He knew how to account for evidence, and the evidence right now was... not good. So many deaths in only a couple of days, with Odium to blame? He had to get out. Now. During the usual evening bustle, he packed up his bedroll, claiming to anyone who asked that he was just moving it because he didn’t like his spot. Then, while everyone was getting dinner and discussing the news of the day - apparently someone had disappeared, though it wasn’t clear how or why - he slipped out into Urithiru. He couldn’t afford to take the lifts, as they’d attract too much attention, but at least he was away from the murders now. What didn’t occur to him is that he was also far away from safety in numbers. At least, not until the Shardblade sliced through his chest - and even then, the realization was a bit too slow to fully form before he died. Bomer shuffled his deck of cards, the fingers of one hand deftly moving to randomise the order effectively, while in the other he flipped a coin, recording its result each time it landed and going at it again. Rare commodities, indeed, especially on Roshar. He had never understood how they had decided on those foolish spheres as currency. There was no way to bring random chance into an object which was identical on every side. At least the boxings he’d brought from Scadrial hadn’t all been lost, yet. Now that was a far more civilised country. Plenty of taverns to gamble in, and people to gamble with. But up here in the cold of Urithiru, there was nobody except Taladir, and he was dead. A shame too, as he had never lost to the man. He had been accused of counting cards, using too much statistical knowledge, and even of hiding cards up his sleeve. Absurd allegations, with only the first two being true. He was an honest gambler, but the best risk to take was a calculated one. So in his spare time, naturally, he did calculations. Some people thought coinflips were a fair game, with the coin having equal odds of landing on either side. Bomer knew it was a lie; besides weighted coins, which could be easily discovered, even fair coins had slight biases, if you wanted to figure them out. Of course, that would take thousands and thousands of flips. Impractical on Scadrial, where clips were scattered like candy by Mistborn and Coinshots, and people always had several on them. In Roshar, when he had complete control of the supply, which was limited to about a dozen? Not impractical at all. So he kept flipping throughout the Night. 2500 trials on this coin so far, 1237 heads and 1263 tails. Approximately fair, probably, with perhaps a bias towards tails; the coin would need about 20000 flips before Bomer could be completely sure. He’d gotten 9 of his coins done in this way so far; at his current rate, he could probably finish with this one by the time they were all dead or all the agents of Odium had been neutralised. A cheering thought, so he refocused on his cards. Cards were a different matter—it all came down to who shuffled, and how good you were at tracking specific cards through the shuffled deck. Bomer had gotten these skills unconsciously after thirty years of handling cards, and knew that any fair card game involving him would require another person shuffling with his eyes disfocused, at the very least. Even with a one-handed shuffle like he used, and with his mind wandering, it was still too easy for him to track; the Highprince of Swords was on top. Bomer sighed. He replaced the cards in his bag—still nobody wanted to gamble—and resolved to make double time with his coin tests. He flipped his coin of choice furiously, recording its result every time. He was on track for 6,000 more flips by the end of the Night, a respectable number. On his 3,646th flip, the coin took a sudden tumble, skirting along its edge away from him as if running, and kept rolling, into the spiral staircase, where Bomer could heat it clashing and rattling. He winced—had he woken everyone up?—but most of the Radiants, including Kareana, were sleeping and remained still. That said, he was prohibited from venturing outside the chamber. It was just a quick trip down a few stairs to find a lost coin, though, and the Brightness was still sleeping. Nobody cared if he went down half a flight of stairs and went back up quickly. He set out, tiptoeing around the sleeping Radiants. Quickly dropping to a hunched position after leaving the sleeping area, he ran his hands along the ground, looking for the coin, to no avail. It was in the stairwell, then. He ventured downward step by step. Still no coin. Then, he spotted it—on the landing in between where the stairs turned around. With a wordless cry of triumph, he pivoted, bending down and retrieving the coin. He unbent, standing up to return to the common area. And saw a man facing him, hooded, with his hands in the air. A flash of fire, a burning smell in his nostrils, a brief agony, and Bomer collapsed, falling forward as he died, and the corpse, tumbling down the steps, would not be discovered until the next morning. 7. So I'm not sure if this is the right sub forum to post this. There will be some spoilers about the Rosharan System. SO DONT READ AHEAD IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS. Anyway. I think I found a depiction of the immigration from Ashyn to Roshar. It's one of the illustrations in Oathbringer. When you start "Part 1" there will be a map of the "Locations of the Ten Oathgates" On the bottom half of the illustration, it depicts people running through a portal -of sorts-away from fire. The place they flee to is full of Soil, grass and from the looks of it, Spren. We know that Ashyn is nicknamed "the burning planet" because of whatever happened there. Shinovar is the only place on Roshar that has soil grass like we do. I think it has to be it. What do you guys think?

  8. I had a thought and would like feedback on it. So the strength of an Allomancer is at least partially determined by their Connection to Preservation. We learn in BoM that F-Duralumin can be fairly flexible in the type of Connection it can store (ex. the "blank" Connection in the medallions) so my thought was, could a Twinborn with F-Duralumin Store their Connection to Preservation. For a time weaken or lose their Allomancy but then Tap that Connection to boost their raw Allomantic power.

  10. Brandon: Vorin culture is concerned with oaths. Extra-marital sexuality is strictly forbidden, but homosexuality is regarded the same by most as heterosexual relationships. If the proper oaths are spoken, then the Almighty approves. (This usually means marriage, but there are certain official forms of other relationships that would allow it also.)

  11. I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I believe a duraluminum fueled pewter punch may be barely strong enough to shatter the helmet, though even that's debatable. It's not going to knock off the Radiant's head. And if that Mistborn cannot one shot kill the Radiant at that close range then the guy is dead, for he would have expended all his pewter and wouldn't be able to get away to refuel. Meanwhile he's in front of a very pissed off Radiant who has lost none of his combat effectiveness.

  15. Nope, did not study Kabbalah. I’m female and I’m too young. Besides my grandfather, who is far more learned than I, says he’ll learn Kabbalah when he understands Chumash-Rashi. He’s still working on it, and I’m nowhere near that knowledgeable. God’s attributes are fairly basic stuff though. You just need to pay attention during prayers. Here’s your WoB: Calamity Denver signing (Feb. 19, 2016) #14 Nashan'Elin (paraphrased) Could Honor and Autonomy be considered opposites, like, Autonomy freeing from Honor's oaths? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, you could definitely think of it that way. Those two are more likely to be opposed than some others. #autonomy #honor It doesn’t confirm them as mirrors, just that they can be perceived as such. I actually think Autonomy making Avatars of itself is a bit of irony, since I do believe it about God in the singular. In this case it’s the unique aspect; God has no body, gender, etc. But the Vessel DID have all these things, and is slowly going insane because its Shard keeps insisting that they DON’T have -or ever had- a body, gender, physical aspects, etc.

  16. For Allomancy push/pull pair I would take Atium and Malatium if I could. If not then Chromium and Nicrosil (assuming I'd be in era 2 Scadrial). If I'm still on Earth, I'd prefer Gold (because we all second guess our choices anyway, might as well know) and Electrum (aka poor man's Atium), but dang it those are costly! So Zinc and Brass might be better. For Feruchemy push/pull pair... this one's more difficult to choose. I want Gold but not Electrum, so let's put that aside. Zinc and Brass could be useful for my strange, strange brain and this strange, strange weather. Iron and Steel are tempting too, while Copper and Bronze are what all students dream of. Cadmium and Bendalloy are also very nice, one could be a lifesaver in emergencies, the other as well, in addition to being a nice for uh... guilty eating. There's too much to choose from! For all pushing/all pulling Allomantic metals I would go with Pushing metals for Electrum and Bendalloy primarily, but also for Brass and Steel which I think I'd be more comfortable with than their counterparts, Nicrosil and Seeker seem more suited to me as well. I don't think this classification fits Feruchemical abilities so passing on that. For Allomantic quartet, I'd go with... hmm... another difficult choice. Bendalloy kind of scares me, Gold is less useful, Aluminium and Duralumin are significantly more useful for full Mistborn but the thought of a Duralumin enhanced Nicroburst is quite exciting! I'll go with Enhancement quartet. For Feruchemical quartet, I choose... why is this so difficult!? Some are so useful for both storing and tapping, some are very useful but storing them would not be a great experience and the metals seem mismatched in the quartets! I actually can't pick for this one... but I can tell you that I'd be happy to have any of them and jealous of any that I don't!

  23. I assume your talking about the potential downsides of compounding. That is a concern but not a huge one to me. Miles appeared to be able to entirely negate the side effects by constantly tapping and zinc is a lot easier to get a hold of then gold. But yeah being braindead without zinc is a scary thought.

  24. A Full Feruchemist would be much better equipped to fight a KR than a Mistborn imo. Armor doubling as metalminds so as to resist a Shardblade in a limited way, increased mental and physical speed and weight to dodge surges, increased strength and healing for close range combat, I imagine they'd be a nasty surprise for any Radiant for as long as their metal stores held out. The only issue is fuel. They cannot easily replenish their stores.

  25. There are fabrails(like soulcasters) for all 10 surges. I see no reason why you could not duplicate other magic effects with other kinds of investiture based technology. We have no idea however how medallions are made so we can't tell you if that is the correct method. That being said the correct nicrosil medallion should grant what you want assuming it was made by the right person and there are some other ways to do things with them for example.

  27. I've said this before, a duralumin enhanced pewter burn should grant enough strength to rip a Radiant's head straight off, plate or no, while at the same time granting the speed and dexterity to do so. Yeah, it'll grow back, but I imagine that would take a moment and be disorienting, especially if the Mistborn then burns Chromium, with or without Duralumin, to drain the Stormlight and potentially interfere with Stormlight Healing in the process. Yes, it takes a bit of maneuvering and planning and maybe a bit of luck, but it is certainly doable. Vin was able to make a man's head explode with a headbutt. Duralumin Pewter is insanely powerful, if only for short bursts. It could even be strong enough to punch through the breastplate, punching a hole in the Radiant. Start burning Chromium while your hand is grabbing the Radiant's spine, and he's done.

  29. I really liked this chapter overall! The first half felt a bit meandering, possibly due to this-then-that and 'again' usage. By the second half, the chapter was on it's feet and running though. I especially liked your closing line. Details: Opening paragraph; "For there is one aspect of portals that speak of." Seems like a word or two are missing. S B conveyance question: it seems like from context that this is a dead loved one you bring back to life to use as a vehicle. Is that right? If not, some clarification might be needed for the new reader. Near 80% mark: "The E looked much as he did today when he was..." This sentence seems grammatically sound but feels a bit tangled up and took a couple re-reads before I was sure what you were saying. Great flow of information in this chapter, the expositong was worked in nicely. Thanks for sharing!

  32. F-Cadmium/Bendalloy if we're looking at pushing/pulling pairs. Going without needing to breathe for long periods of time could be useful in all sorts of circumstances (I dive, so I can easily imagine ways you could have a lot of fun with that power) and being able to store nutrition is one of those things where tapping and storing are equally useful. Store while eating/drinking and gain no weight (at least, no weight that stays in the body longer than a day or two) and tap when you're hungry/thirsty and don't have ready access to food. Actually, once unsealed metalminds and compounding become more common I wouldn't be surprised if both those metals become important in Era 4, with F-Cadmium being useful as an emergency oxygen supply (or reducing the bulk of a spacesuit by not requiring a purely mechanical tank) and F-Bendalloy similarly allowing a ship to carry all the nutrition its crew needs in a tiny fraction of the mass. Oh, and A-Iron/Steel for allomancy because both powers are cool and useful on their own and using them together would be even moreso with practice. I like to think of the combination as the 'Allomantic Spiderman' pairing. Though I guess you'd also need A/F-Tin for the full package... or possibly F-Chromium depending on how that works.
