I'm not sure PR is the right word there. PR implies spin, manipulation, obfuscation. I'm not going to tell you how to feel, but you may have tricked yourself here. You dislike Shallan because of her character. Therefore when she does something you like, or find impressive, you have the impression that Sanderson is forcing you to like her. In reality, you like her (on this issue, not necessarily in general). This isn't a PR move, this is a change in character for Shallan, or a demonstration of what she could be. I have to tell you; mental illness does not give you a get out of jail free card. I'm not sure how much experience you have dealing with people who have mental illnesses, but the opposite is usually true. You get blamed for more things because you have a mental illness. Attributions of failings that people give to your illness. You aren't hated for these things, but you cannot grow beyond them. It is a horrible thing that society does. You also fundamentally misunderstand how her disorder works. It's not that she is the "real Shallan" only when doing good things. She is always the real Shallan. All of these things are her, and she is responsible in any form for the actions of any other. It's the internal struggle between the various aspects, the decision within herself to decide what she wants, and not to switch or be subsumed that defines her. Sympathy should be extended to those with disadvantaged backgrounds, but it doesn't stretch forever, and doesn't truly excuse actions. A savvy reader or observer is able to quickly determine whether a person's background is be used, or coming to the forefront naturally. As someone mentioned, Renarin is a back five person. He is a side character for the moment. I would be cautious in assuming that Shallan's disorder is anything similar to Renarin's. There will, and are, differences. She hasn't stolen anything from him. What you say could be read as, "People with autism are the same as people with multiple personalities." Having her interact and be reviewed positively by the Kholins isn't a manipulation. I haven't found any interaction between any Kholin and Shallan remotely unreasonable. They are based in the character traits of both. If you feel like any interaction is unearned by Shallan, that's your business, but I don't see any support for it. And the Kholins have been shown very publicly in book two to have not have good judgment on people. The last part I understand; lots of people dont like Shallan, and feel like OB should have had less of her. She should have given more space to Dalinar, or Kaladin, or anyone else. I wish there was less of her. That being said, much of her interaction with Adolin and the other characters made sense. It was logical that Shallan, who has ample experience dealing with expectations and internal demands, helps Adolin be who he wants to be. And ultimately, she just supports his decision; she says that he should do what he wants, that he doesnt have to be his father. But she also says he can be. She has no stake in his choice. I'm not here shilling for Shallan. I am against the sort of close-minded dismissal you presented.8 likes

And if you're reading information specifically designed to find the characters people dislike, your not going to find the ones who like her. There's a large number of people that I've talked to that Shallan is the thing that for them hooked them on SA in the first place. What you're experiencing is called confirmation bias.6 likes
-
Considering the number of people who say Shallan is their favorite character (I'm not among them) and find her exceptionally relatable, I have to vehemently disagree. This is subjective. This doesn't work for you. I very much doubt Brandon agrees, because the "changes" Shallan has undergone have been a linear and progressive character arc. That's not rebranding. That's growth.6 likes

Mraize has slippers when he meets Ash in Oathbringer. I have been fascinated by this ever since. And you are my favorite arcanist/God Beyond! We are friends! SA is so much more than just the Kholins and Shallan. Moash/Kaladin, the war in Alethkar, Cosmere lore, Ishar on the rise, Nale on Team Odium, the Singers revolution, Mraize and his shady stuff, more Radiants, more Unmade, Vivenna and Vasher, the Sibling, Taravangian playing all sides, Cultivation and Hoid meddling, the Heralds trying to survive, Axies & Rysn, Anaram as a Cognitive Shadow (ok, probably not, but I can hope). Thing is, even if I was displeased with the Kholins and Shallan, which Im really not, I would have had tons of cool things to look forward too.5 likes

Regarding that terrible Trump comparison, never compare politics and art. It's two very different things. Which is also why that should be left out of this, but I feel like it calls for pointing out that that's not a good argument. Regarding Adolin, I have some issues with his arc. The story constantly seems to push him away from responsibility. He was going to become highprince in Way of Kings, didn't happen. He was going to become king in Oathbringer, didn't happen. He was going to take responsibility for the murder of Sadeas - didn't happen (yet). Damnation, he didn't even choose his wife on his own. Jasnah had to do that for him. I'm not saying I dislike him as a character. He's great at making other characters shine, and the arcs of Kaladin, Shallan and Dalinar owe him a great deal. But his own arc has been kinda empty. That said, I could totally imagine all this being set-up for when he finally can't get away anymore and has to take responsibility. I trust Brandon as a story-teller, so I hope it will all make sense looking at it afterwards.4 likes

I would agree with you if everyone were playing by the rules. So far he has 4 shards down, and another engaged. (Devotion, Dominion, Ambition, and Honor down, and Cultivation actively threatened.) Two more have merged and effectively neutralized each other, and those two are being actively engaged by another bad actor. (Harmony for 2 and Autonomy for Trell) The only other shard we know for sure, is happily sitting at home with her fingers in her ears saying "this is fine." We also know that there's another Shard that is just now going, "maybe something needs to happen" So of the 10 shards we know, 4 are dead and splintered, 5 are actively fighting each other, and one other is is convinced that there's not a problem. And we only have hints of a single Shard that's even looked at the Cosmere and thought "somethings not right." With all the talk of odium's love of Fortune, I think he'd have tried something subtler if he believed everyone else was going to sit back and follow the rules.4 likes

Just for fun, if the cosmere characters suddenly got teleported into the Pokemon world, what would their teams look like? Based on their personality and fighting (or avoiding-fights) style. Vin: Sneasel: They're fast and sneaky, and are known to be thieves Lycanroc (Midday): Because TenSoon wasn't available (he's out on his own Pokemon adventure), and she needed another dog companion. Medicham: It's a cool fighting Pokemon Mawile Misdreavus Salazzle I don't really have much reasoning for the last three, I just got the feeling they'd be the type of Pokemon Vin would catch. Shallan: Swadloon: It wraps itself up in a cocoon and only comes out of its cocoon with high friendship. Smeargle: It's literally called the Painter Pokemon Cubone: A Pokemon that is burdened by the loss of its mother Yamask: Fits with the theme of hiding behind a mask Zoroark: Its ability is to create illusions as a disguise. Sounds like a certain Lightweaver we know. Crobat: I didn't really know what to put in the last slot, so I just picked Crobat So what do you think? What would your favorite character's team look like?3 likes

That's... The "love triangle" is such a minor part of the plot. There's a lot more to Shallan than that, and I'd have actually enjoyed her character more if it hadn't happened. I hope you're not serious. Making assumptions on other people's perception of a character that you have admittedly skipped portions on their narrative is... Kind of gross?3 likes

I get that she rubs you the wrong way and no character can please everyone however with characters whose are not obviously terribly written cough cough Anekan(whose name I will not even spell correctly) it is often a good idea to separate your perception of the character with who they are objectively. For example many people like Dany but if you view her objectively you should either pity her or be scared of her destructive potential. I am also with @Config2 I really don't like Dany(she scares me) but that does not mean that she does not deserve a cheer for her breaker of chains moment. Right but with Shallan the cleverness is usually temporary. Sure she outsmarts the ghoostbloods but then they catch up to her similarly. This one definitely comes back to bite her. Shallan has friends? Did I miss something? She is actually. I would probably have stayed catatonic after the first event in her life.3 likes

Elrond sighed. “We are agreed, then,” he said finally, glad to have the discussion finished with for now. “Rath shall go.” The sun was setting, now, flaring the brilliant autumn leaves even redder but leaving the courtyard below in shadows. They had talked for hours upon hours, trying to decide after even Ulmo failed who might have a chance not to be corrupted. They’d finally settled on Rath, a dwarf from the Lonely Mountain who had come bringing dire tidings. He’d be going back in that direction regardless, and the Council thought that perhaps if the powerful could be corrupted so easily, the weak and insignificant might have more of a chance. Elrond looked at the Ring hanging around Gwendolyn’s neck - even he could feel its pull for a moment, and he wondered if it would be better not to keep it far from this Council, in case it could somehow be influencing their minds. But he knew that was foolishness. The Ring could not see or hear. It could only allure and corrupt. And it seemed to have corrupted even a Vala, which he’d not thought possible. Even if it could not touch his thoughts, he would not venture near it. Just to be safe. The first frosts of winter had begun to bite by the time the Fellowship finally set off. Rath smiled, breathing in the crisp air. Rivendell has been a lovely comfort, to be sure, but he was glad to be going out into the world again. Too much calm, too many Elves. Couldn’t turn a corner without seeing one, and he couldn’t help but feel that they were always watching him. “Let’s go, then,” the dwarf said, impatient with farewells, and started walking without a backward glance. He could hear his companions following behind. A motley lot, he reflected, but perhaps enough to get the job done. He could only hope: hope that none of them were already corrupted by the Ring, hope that Sauron’s servants could not find them, hope that they would make it in time to save Middle Earth. He could only hope. Ulmo was not with them, of course. He had no need for it: he was in every spring and stream, any water that touched the Sea. And beside, the Fellowship had made it clear he was not wanted among their number. That was fine - he had only been there, in truth, to bring his Chosen onto this Fellowship if he could. The world would rest on them yet more than him, now. He hoped they would be up to the task. Rath was one of the Free People of Arda! Vote Count: Aman (2): Kas, Striker Bard (1): Coda Elbereth (1): Straw Rath (3): Aman, Fifth, Wonko Wibble (1): Bard Cycle 3 has begun; etc etc sorry but I’ve got to go!3 likes

One analogy is that they can get bored always playing with the Cheat Codes on? When reality itself jumps to accomplish your whims the moment they manifest, it's hard to get a real sense of accomplishment. The other thing is that, pressures of Intent aside, it doesnt seem like Ascension actually Changes them all that much. Expands the crap out of them sure, and inevitably changes their perspectives on a bunch of things, but their core personalities, their priorities and attachments, etc. dont seem to go away (Im basing a lot of this on my observations of Era2 Sazed, fwiw). If they cared about People (or Cultures, or Art, or Science) before, I think they would still feel those same things, unless and until the Intent wore them away (as with Ati). Realmically, I think this might even be mechanically necessary. When a person Ascends, their entire spiritweb is flooded and expanded (so much that it permanently stretches), so that should include all their Connections to people and things (ie those Connections subject to Feruchemy or Hemalurgy). So if as a mortal they were, say, very patriotic (strong Homeland Connection), or Married (strong Personal Connection) that Connection would theoretically be magnified, not reduced or overshadowed.3 likes

I will have to completely disagree here with you.. I think if an author is able write about such conflicting characters that they are polarising, such as shallan or Dalinar or Moash, then that i see as a sign of good writing. It means that character portrayal is more realistic rather than the fairy tale version of a perfect damsel in distress. Irl often there are people that some like and others absolutely dislike. The very fact that shallan makes you hate her so much, that she insights such strong reaction from you, I think, should be considered as a sign of clever writing and not PR machinery at work. what is it about shallan that irritates you so much that you would tear your copy of oathbringer? shallan started in book 1 and I fairly liked her there. She was making mistakes huge ones, but she is supposed to. She has left her home for the first time and is supposed to be ignorant of things and bad judge of people. book 2 in fact she is quite likeable. I admired all the strength that she found, authority she mustered and her conversion of vathah and his gang is actually very impressive. From there on, she has done great job actually throughout including saving everyone and finding urithiru. I think her problems start only after she confesses the truth about her mother and from there she spirals down in OB. What I dislike reading about in her povs is actually all the Veil stuff. I find veil to be too superficial and her nighttime wonderings learning to drink alcohol and trying to be a spy are just... but whenever shallan is bring her own self I actually like those chapters better.2 likes

Sure if the real world was a work of literature. It is actually more of the beginning of a new plot line. Adolin has now admitted he can't be the person Dalinar wanted him to be he now has to figure out who he actually is. This is also a possibility. I want to add that it is not like online polling is particularly accurate.2 likes

Even as someone who doesn't enjoy Shallan myself, I think Karger is on the money with their suspicion that it is female characters who get this treatment, and it is a fair statement of how we read books. Listing all the female characters we do like doesn't erase the fact that it's still only female characters who get this particular reaction. Even when listing disliked male characters by comparison, the scope or the negative emotions is so huge, I feel it gets used as a "gotcha! See, it's not because she's a woman!" Of course, I know I have a perhaps unpopular opinion that, at some point, it's on us as the readers to be aware of that; that the way the author wrote them is not 100% responsible for the way we react to them. I just notice when it's said about a female character "the author wrote them to be annoying!" but they really weren't... I have to examine myself and reconsider if the author really meant that. Annoying is subjective, otherwise everyone would find Shallan annoying! But not everyone does, and therefore, it's a reader opinion, and not a fact.2 likes

On that note, I personally think that all of the Unmade would qualify as Bondsmith spren. We know that they can be bonded. And we know that talk if increasing the number of Bondsmiths was not seen as impossible, but "seditious." The Unmade seem like good candidates to me. And frankly speaking... I want a Sja-anat Bondsmith.2 likes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Szeth let go of his Honorblade himself? It's not like "being shoved onto the street" and more like "jumping in front of a car". Besides, I think there's a difference between killing an enemy immediately as soon as you can, and hesitating to kill the opponent to consider at least for a moment to spare him out of pity. The end result is the same, but the implications for Kaladin's sense of morality are different. The way the scene is written now makes Kaladin less of a cold-blooded killer, it shows that taking someone's life is a difficult choice for Kaladin.2 likes

That a Shard's ability to see the future depends on how well they understand their own investiture, how astute the vessel is, and the very nature of their investiture. So more dynamic or "hotter" investitures like Ruin would by default see more in the near future, whereas "colder" shards like Preservation would see better further. Moreover, as realmatic investiture is the substance of matter and energy, the means of this future sight is their own investiture - so Ruin's futuresight would focus on possibilities motivated by Ruinous investiture. This directly leads into why Endowment is less concerned - the Returned on Nalthis are beings entirely invested with her investiture, and they only ever feed on Breadths, which is still her investiture. This forms a net of much more accurate and detailed futuresight in her own domain. Everytime someone dies, she (or an automated mechanism) determines what would happen if that person would be brought back. They may have some high level goals in mind - for e.g. looking for a way to fight against Odium, or spread knowledge of awakening. If the person can potentially accomplish some of this, she brings them back. This is why the Five Scholars were all Returned - Shasharra's entire Returned existence was to study Nalthis' magic, get inspired by Rosharran magic and try and duplicate that - directly creating Nightblood. Once she had done this and told Vasher how to do so, she had served her purpose. Vasher, however, may not have fulfilled all his purposes yet. Similarly, Vivenna may also be slightly more invested with Endowment, if only because of her Returned lineage. Not only this, but Odium's own perception of himself as Passion may mean he has a slightly flawed futuresight. Fortune and Destiny are opposites - like pulling and pushing on the same spiritual attribute/force. Fortune makes less likely things more likely to occur, in a way increasing randomness, whereas Destiny acts like a pin or some sort of tack, "pinning" a certain set of events, making them more likely to occur, but at the cost of decreasing the chance of anything else happening. Destiny was how Preservation insured the roles of Vin and Sazed in his plan, whereas tapping Fortune is what burning Atium does - it doesn't show you just one most likely set of events. It shows you all the likely things that could happen. Maybe this is also how Hoid's Oath works - he taps Destiny, always insuring that events where his help was needed and he was there are the ones that occur in actuality. The Central Pillar in Uruthiru (the one which housed Re-Shephir) was originally meant to serve as housing for the Sibling. Every Godspren has a home - The Stormfather has the Highstorms, the Nightwatcher has The Valley. So maybe, the Sibling, as a younger Godspren, was fashioned specifically to power an extensive and complex fabriel - one that channeled all 10 surges in various ways to accomplish many functions at Uruthiru.2 likes

Yeah, I know how it sounds. Maybe I'm looking too much into it and see patterns where there are none, but Metallica songs really seem to describe certain dark moments in Stormlight Archive quite well. Not just well, but to the point where you could take some phrases and they would make quite poetic Death Rattles that actually foreshadow things. I don't know that much about Brandon's taste in music, but I was able to find a couple of his tweets about Metallica and Death (Without Pizza) will feature metal music, so maybe there is a hidden connection here. Anyway, here we go (spoiler tags just for brevity): Sad but true Odium's theme song. Works particularly well for his talks with Dalinar, with some phrases being very similar to Odium quotes Memory remains My favorite one. It has Shalash written all over it – her particular brand of insanity (“Fortune fame mirror vain gone insane”), being an immortal who doesn't always register the passing o time (“denies the grave”, “lips that time forgets”), unusually good hearing (“Just listen, they play my song”) and being called divinity by the Stormfather (“goddess”). The best part, though? Ash → Ashe (Aon of Light) → Lightweavers, the Order whose patron she is Dust → Dustbringers, the Order many people believe she'll join One It actually works on two levels: it describes Taln, the one Herald left in Damnation, finally breaking if you reverse some phrases (“can't remember anything” → “can remember everything”, “silence” → “screams”) you get the description of Dalinar regaining his memories of Rathalas at Thaylen Field. It's One as in alone at first, then One as in Unity The God That Failed Pretty much describes the Recreance Unforgiven More tentative than the previous ones, but all three songs seem relate to dramatic events in Kaladin's life Unforgiven, the death of Tien: Unforgiven II, his relationship with Tarah: Unforgiven III, temporarily killing Syl because of his hatred towards lighteyes: Enter Sandman Not on a lyrics level, but thematically it works really well for Shallan – she kills her father while singing a Veden lullaby1 like

So I'm going to throw my theory out there here. I've long wondered if Odium is going around hunting shards and to answer this question: I actually wonder if he just thinks that if he splinters every other shard, his 1/16th of the total power will be enough to "take over." I don't think he'll gain power, but the less residual power there is in others, the more significant his small portion becomes. It also seems to me that most shards are invested, but Odium was not. I've long believed that Honor bound Odium to Roshar in an attempt to keep the other shards from being splintered as he knew they would be if Odium escaped. That would also make sense as it's the "honorable" thing to do for a shard. I've wondered if it was a very selfless act performed by Honor to make sure Odium stayed put long enough for someone to figure out how to remove his influence.1 like

This is entirely a Tinfoil Hat theory. It could be, I havent found anything specific to make it impossible, but that's because it is mostly based on vague hints and themes and an interpretation of one of Hoid's stories. But it would explain quite a bit using known realmic mechanics and cosmere themes. I think I know what broke Honor, what changed in those last days that made him doubt himself, doubt the Radiants, abdicate the creation of Spren, prepare the Stormfather as his heir, create the Visions, and apparently weakened him enough for Shattering, etc: I think he had an affair. With Queen Tsa. I think Hoid's story of the Moon Gods is describing the shardic Soap Opera that went down. The short version of the story is that a very clever mortal queen tricked the celestial entity that is female and color-coded Green to trade places for a day, only to later discover that it was all a scam to have a night and a child with the male celestial being color-coded White. That translates to Cultivation voluntarily giving up her Shard (which they can do by WOB), temporarily entrusting it to a Mortal so that she (Cultivation) could experience Mortal life again. This put Honor in a pickle, because the rationale behind how he is keeping his Oaths (like the non-interference deal among the Shards) is based on the Fact that Cultivation and his Wife are the same being, and suddenly that was no longer the case. Now, whether he made any actual Choice to "mingle" with the Temporary Cultivation, or if their mutual Investment in Roshar caused it automatically, I cant really say. But either way, he had made multiple Oaths in the past that were now in conflict: Either his pre-existing marriage trumps the Shardic Deal, or Possessing a Shard takes precedence. Either he had made a baby with a woman that he was not married to, or he had Co-habitated with another Shard and violated the agreement between the 16 that supersedes his mortal marriage. This is the sort of internal conflict that can drive ordinary folks crazy, but for Tanavast it brought him firmly in conflict with his own Shardic Intent, and by a means that is done and in the past and impossible to repair (without time travel). Note: This is based on the assumption that Honor was rationalizing staying with Cultivation via their pre-existing marriage, that it would not be "interference" to settle with your own spouse. There are a few fun possible implications of this: Queen Tsa would then be a Sliver Queen Tsa might have then been Unmade. Having that sort of direct Connection to Honor and Cultivation could explain why Ba-Ado-Mishram is uniquely able to Channel Voidlight, or why Sja-Anat is able to Corrupt Spren that are made of some mix of Honor and Cultivation. Nohadon could be of this bloodline. WOB is that Vessels can have Babies, and that it would have effects. We know that Nohadon was "Someone Special" even among surgebinders and kings, and was not a Herald (but per that vision at least was indeed a Surgebinder). Kaladin might be of this bloodline. WOB says that the Stormfather calling Kaladin, specifically, a Son of Tanavast is significant. This would explain why. EDIT: The Dawnshards are the literal Children of Honor and Cultivation, and one is different from the rest because that was is the child of Honor and Tsa. Queen Tsa...Tsa..T.S.A.... The Stormlight Archive? Queen Tsa is the hidden secret of The Stormlight Archive?1 like

Yikes. I see a whole lot of discussion about how a plot point was "resolved." Luckily, it wasn't resolved. There was some sort of end-of-book resolution to it because Oathbringer was getting too long, but it's important to remember that we've got 2 more 1000+ page books for Kaladin to deal with how that resolution played out.
